I like to imagine Hoffman has his whole escape set up, the tools to break his ankle and slip the chain like Eric Matthews did all laid out in front of him, and then he realizes that right now to the police it looks like he got away. But if he escaped and went back to get revenge on Lawrence, it would be pretty obvious that he had gotten screwed over by the guy and the only thing worse than being duped by Dr. Lawrence Gordon is everyone KNOWING you’ve been duped by Dr. Lawrence Gordon. He’d literally rather die than let anyone else know that’s what happened

Also the reason he doesn’t just escape and go through with his original plan of disappearing into the wind without confronting Lawrence is because if somewhere down the line Larry found out about that, tracked him down, and got his ass AGAIN there would be no coming back from that. Once is a fluke he can kinda maybe sorta justify if he tilts his head and squints. A second time though? That’s unacceptable. So at this point he’s just gonna cut his losses and rot away in the bathroom with Adam rather than open up that mortifying possibility
