Using other people's characters
I've actually done this before with PD James's two characters where not only is Adam Dalgliesh as drunk as he's depressed, but also his wife Emma turned out to be constantly cheating on him whenever he's absent. I tried getting permission from her estate to use some of her characters, but no to avail at this point. My fortunes might change, but that's a pipe dream.
I even tried imitating PD James's writing style when writing this story at all, where they have a son negatively affected by both Adam's suicidal tendencies and Emma's promiscuity, that he'd do anything to leave for his friends when it comes to the latter. Unfortunately, she'd take him back when he did. Fanfiction is full of people who use other authors' characters for their own pleasure.
But it's also a matter of finding a way to hew more closely to the original authors' style, try as they might, some fanfiction writers are more content to write their characters in their own style. So we have not only a different way of depicting them, but also a different writing style contrary to the original authors. It's not going to be easy and perfect imitating somebody else's style.
I know this from experience, where some of my writing style leaked into my attempt at imitating James's style, where she tends to be overly descriptive, telling rather than showing. But it can be done, though it remains if they can convincingly pull it off.

The Difference an Hour Makes: Chapter 4
by: Asidian
Fandom: Dead Boy Detectives
Pairing: Charles/Edwin
Warnings: injury, kidnapping, torture, hurt/comfort
Excerpt:
Ghosts don't sleep. Ghosts can't sleep, Edwin told him once, and there's been nothing since then to ever make him think otherwise.
But Charles must've been out good. He's waking up slow and muzzy, thoughts packed in cotton, and the pain from his legs roars through him like the behemoth they tracked down once out near Lavenham. Must be all the iron, he thinks, dizzily. If he's tangible, he must be solid enough to get tired, for once.
Just for a second, though, Charles sort of wishes he was back under again. That he could slip away and drift a minute or two.
It's a bloody selfish thought. If he's out cold, he's not working on getting the collar off, is he? And the longer he takes, the longer that witch gets to spend picking Edwin apart.
