Hey I was reading one of your post about Thane and you thinking about caving in.
I love that writers are willing to change things to make us readers happy (It’s really appreciated 😊) but I feel like that’s where they go wrong. Sometimes trying to appease everyone, especially when it comes their characters starts to make the process unenjoyable.
This is your project. If you think it would only cause frustration or annoyance- continue what you have planned. Who knows, maybe at some point if YOU really wanted to, you could do a small side story with MLM Thane route.
Hehe thank you 💕 And thank you for your other lovely message 💕I read it every time I go into my inbox🤭
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I think I'm taking Henry Cavil's stance on this a bit :)) Fans are allowed to have opinions and preferences about the media they consume, so I really don't mind the asks. It's really flattering that people are interested in Thane. If I had more time I would totally write a 'coming out of the closet' route for him 🤭 It's also the endless cycle of wanting to write faster and share the thing, and wanting to add more to it, but also share it, but also oh I could add this... that can make the process tedious at times. And it's true, when the possibilities in IFs are basically endless with enough time and attentions, one will never be able to satisfy everyone. And the more things I add, the more it will become a chore... so yeah😅 But a little side story would be interesting to explore 🤔

Self care, the NSFW version
Content warnings: mutual masturbation (kind of), some misuse of resentment tendrils and a lot of dirty talk.
The porn starts under the cut! For the fully sfw version, click here
It is only a few minutes before curfew that Lan Zhan finally makes it home, exhausted after a long day of teaching, training, doing paperwork and tolerating the sect elders in a meeting that could have been a two page letter at most. He's looking forward to a short bath and then sleep, already imagining his husband's arms around him in a tight, loving hug while they're falling asleep.
He hasn't been around Wei Ying as much as he would have liked to these past few days. Lan Xichen has just returned from seclusion and has requested Wangji's help with getting back into the workings of their sect, so he has been spending a lot of time doing that on top of his regular duties.
He knows Wei Ying understands and supports him lending his brother a hand, but he can't help feeling a bit like a lousy husband, spending time with his spouse only briefly before sleep overtakes him. They haven't gone out in town in about a week at this point, and they haven't had much time for... other things either.
After all, it was understandable that "everyday is everyday" couldn't always be viable - still, Wangji missed it, not just because he grew used to it but also because he missed being so close and so open with someone he loved so fully and devotedly.
Alas, Lan Xichen told Lan Wangji to take the day off tomorrow for all his hard work, so there will be plenty of time to make up for everything they've lost. The thought alone has Wangji feeling excited.
--
The jingshi is quiet, only the lit up candles, a dish of food, a teapot, and a half empty wine cup on the table signaling that the place is indeed lived in. Otherwise, it's surprisingly orderly and squeaky clean, everything in its place, sandalwood incense burning next to the bed.
Lan Zhan calls for his husband, feeling just a bit disappointed that he hasn't been greeted with a kiss when he walked in.
"Wei Ying?"
"In the bath!"
Awfully convenient, Lan Wangji thinks to himself with a smile, remembering their many trysts in bathtubs and how fun they all were, even if they had to reimburse the damages way too often.
He walks into the room to find Wei Ying soaking into the tub, the room smelling like lavender bath salts and, again, sandalwood. Lan Wangji has an inkling about the reason for that, and it makes something stir low in his abdomen.
"Wonderful of you to finally show up, Hanguang-Jun!" Wei Ying greets, a teasing smile on his lips, the tops of his cheeks flushed with the steam of the hot water. He runs a hand through his wet hair, and Wangji finds himself a bit too entranced with the movement and the way Wei Ying's skin glistens under the dancing candlelight.
They make eye contact for a few more seconds, as Lan Zhan allows himself to take in the way droplets slide from Wei Ying's hair, down his neck and clavicles and chest, disappearing into the bathtub before they could go lower. Oh. Lan Zhan really wants to see lower.
"I believe there was a rule somewhere about it being impolite to stare?" Wei Ying winks, crossing his elbows over the bathtub's edge and arching a bit under the water, the tiniest glimpse of his ass cheeks breaking the surface before being submerged again.
Lan Zhan follows the display hungrily, already reaching to undo his headband. At that, Wei Ying frowns, playfully. "What do you think you're doing, Hanguang-Jun?"
"Joining you in the bath."
"Hm, I don't think so."
Lan Zhan doesn't even try to hide his disappointment. He looks quite adorable, with his surprised, sad face, and Wei Ying wants to kiss him. But he has other plans that overcome that desire.
"You see, I've already started without you."
Lan Zhan's eyes become noticeably dark, and Wei Ying can see his pupils expand in the honey of his iris.
"Show me."
"No."
"Wei Ying."
"I don't think you're in any position to give orders, Lan Er-gege. I decide what you get to see, and what you get to do right now. I think it's a low price to pay for the fact that I've only had my jade pillar to keep me company for the past week or so."
Lan Wangji feels like he's been set on fire from the inside. All he wants to do is jump into that bathtub and show Wei Ying how hard this dry spell has been for him too and how much better he is than any toy.
But... he can't move. Locking eyes with Wei Ying, he sees his pupils glow red, and only then does he notice thin ropes of black smoke holding him in place.
"Let me go."
"No. I don't trust you'll obey me if I do."
And he moves into the bathtub, leaning against its furthermost wall to face Lan Zhan.
"You said you want to see, so look."
But Wei ying doesn't lift himself out of the water, instead letting both his hands dip beneath the surface. The water ripples with the movement, and Wei Ying's eyes drop halfway, lips curling around soft moans.
Lan Zhan tries fighting against the restraints but it's pointless. He knows it is, but there's no other way to at least attempt and release some of the tension he feels everywhere in his body. He's so hard it almost hurts and he'd not even seeing anything. He can only imagine Wei Ying stroking himself with one hand as he pushes his toy in and out of his hole and...
"I've been doing this for days, Lan Zhan, I'm starting to think I can really get used to this instead of you."
He almost growls in disagreement. Wei Ying smiles sultrily, his hands moving slower now.
"I should really do that, shouldn't I? Since my husband is too busy to satisfy my needs, what else is there left for me to do?"
Lan Zhan can't take much more of that teasing, he can already imagine at least five, no, six, seven? ways to make Wei Ying regret every single word he's saying.
"Or maybe... there is another way."
There is a little evil glint in Wei Ying's eyes and Lan Zhan knows what it means. Wei Ying's trying to play at him being jealous - and he is. He's jealous of the jade pillar inside Wei Ying, he's jealous of how much pleasure Wei Ying is giving himself without Lan Zhan and he's jealous of even the implication that Wei Ying might seek his pleasure somewhere else. Lan Zhan knows it's just words meant to rile him up, of course Wei Ying would never be unfaithful, but even the very fictional idea of it has him riled up.
"Wei Ying. Enough."
"I decide when it's enough."
Lan Zhan groans in frustration. He doesn't know if he's getting lightheaded from the steam and heat in the room, or the raging erection between his legs. Probably, it's both.
Wei Ying has resumed pleasuring himself in a more alert rhythm. "Oh, Lan Zhan, I love when you look at me like that. So angry, but so, so needy."
"Wei Ying, let me go, let me-"
"- make up for lost time? You're gonna fuck me harder than I've ever fucked myself and make me cum so good I pass out?"
"Yes."
Wei Ying moans at the image of that, his hands moving faster, in tandem.
"And then you'll keep using me just as roughly and mercilessly no matter how much I'm begging you to stop?"
"Yes, Wei Ying, please-"
"Oh, fuck, and- and then you'll fuck me until you fill me up and I won't have a choice but to cum again too because, o-oh, because just feeling you in me makes my body so-"
"I'll do anything you want, Wei Ying, please, let me go and I'll do whatever you want."
Lan Zhan sounds like he's begging now, desperate, almost sobbing. Wei Ying lets his head roll back against the bathtub as he's chasing his release.
"I told you I can't let you do that..." Lan Zhan looks so hornily broken it makes Wei Ying moan out loud. "...but..."
Lan Zhan feels his inner robes be parted haohazardly and-
"Ah!"
Wei Ying smiles in satisfaction. "How does that feel?"
"W-Wei Ying, this is- o-oh - you're using-"
"My cultivation, yes. It's amazing, right?"
Lan Zhan feels so overwhelmed with it he can barely stand up straight. The tendril of resentment feels... foreign, undescribable, but in the best of ways. The pleasure is electric, almost, and Lan Zhan doesn't know if it's Wei Ying's teasing or the effect of this...
"You're getting close, aren't you, my love?" Wei Ying somehow still manages to sound composed, even if he looks a breath away from his orgasm, face flushed red, hair sticking to his skin, eyes red and wanting.
"Wei Ying..."
"Answer me, yes or no."
Wei Ying makes the tendril move faster and curl around the tip of Lan Zhan's cock. He moans out loud and it makes Wei Ying's insides clench.
"Y-yes, yes."
"Good. I want us to cum together. You think you can do that for me?"
And he makes the tendril move like that again and Lan Zhan almost whimpers with it.
"I'll take that as a yes then."
Everything becomes too much too quick. Lan Zhan can't even think anymore, desperate to cum as he feels himself getting pleasured while he watches his husband fuck himself with wanton abandon. It's the most erotic sight he has ever seen in his life, he wants to have it burned inside his eyelids - the way Wei Ying looks almost like he's in pain, the furrow of his eyebrows and how flushed he is and how the water shines on his skin and how it ripples with his desperate movements and...
Wei Ying's eyes squueze shut. "Lan Zhan, I'm- I'm going to cum now!'
"Look at me." He's surprised at how breathless he sounds. "Look at me, I want to see you cum. And I want you to see me too."
Wei Ying opens his eyes and it only takes a few more seconds before the inevitable happens and they both nearly scream through their orgasms, enjoying their own pleasure and each other's.
It takes them a while to come back into their senses. And when Wei Ying allows Lan Zhan to join him in the bath finally, they agree they will be doing that again soon.
Very soon.

Creativity Magick
Tumblr media
Creativity is a topic that's very near and dear to my heart. When I don't have time or energy to take on creative projects, I get really grouchy and unpleasant to be around. So I try to make time to feed my creative spirit as often as possible. There are a lot of little things you can do to invite more creativity into your life. - Make a creativity altar. Include stones and herbs from the lists below, and perhaps a piece of art of poetry that inspires you in your creative work. This is a great place to add a small offering bowl to make offerings to your muses or creative spirits. - Make a creativity herbal bath. Use some of the herbs below to make a nice soak that you use to prepare yourself for creative time. Use some of the stones too, just make sure they can be submerged in water first. If not, place them on the counter of your bathroom and burn some nice incense to set the mood. - Immerse yourself in things that inspire you. This could mean going to an art museum or listening to inspiring music. You could browse poetry at the library or take in a play. Try to see if you can get inspired by immersing yourself in a different creative field from what you usually participate in. For example, if you create music, read some short stories to see if you can get inspired. If you paint, look at some sculptures to be inspired. It all fills your creative well! - Write a prayer to creativity deities. Think about The Muses, Sarasvati, Brigid, Isis, or any other deities that are associated with creativity. Let your prayer flatter and invoke them to be with you as you create.
Herbs for Creativity
Broom, Carcamom, Carnation, Chamomile, Cinnamon, Clove, Daisy, Ginsent, Honeysuckle, Iris, Jasmine, Lavender, Lilac, Lily, Lotus, Mistletoe, Nutmeg, Orris Root, Patchouli, Peppermint, Rose, Rosemary, Sandalwood, Skullcap, Spikenard, Valerian, Vervain. ♡ Self Love Bath Spell ♡
Tumblr media
Life is filled with self doubt and it can be hard to see one's self in a good light from time to time, take time to relax and clear your mind of negative thoughts and opinions of yourself.
What you need:
Candles
- White and/or Pink candles
Flower Petals
You only need 1 or 2 of these and you can pick any 1 or 2 you prefer or have easier access to:
- Fresh or Dried light pink rose petals
- Iris petals, blue or white
- lilac petals
- lily petals
- magnolia petals.
Oils and Salts
- Coconut oil
- Epson salt ( meant for soaking in do not subsitute with any other kind of salt )
- Small drops of you favorite scented essential oil ( rose or lavender is my recommendation )
Optional:
- If you have any rose quartz those are handy as well :)
What to do:
- Run a bath at a comfortable warm or hot temp to your preference.
- As the water runs ad 1/4 to 1/2 a cup of coconut oil depending on how much water you like in your baths.
- Stir in the oil and add in the Epson salt with your hands.
- Next scatter the flower petals of your choice into the bath, and around your bathroom if you would like.
- Add a few drops of essential oils to the bath to create a pleasant aroma.
- Light your candles and put them around your bathroom, and if you have space the edge of your tub.
- Lastly if you have rose quartz place a few around your bath, not in it though.
- I normally listen to calming music to help ease my mind as well.
What to focus on:
Soak for as long as you please, your body will feel relaxed as the worries slowly drift from your body, let your negative thoughts and self doubts be taken from your as your skin is nourished and softened by the water. Let it take all f those things away as it washes over your skin. Love and appreciate the body that you have and what is in front of you. You are you no matter what and loving yourself goes a long way.
After you soak, and drain your tub your worries, negative self thoughts, and self doubts will be washed down the drain with the water carrying them away.
Be sure to clean the petals from the water before you drain the tube to prevent them from clogging any piping.
♡ Enjoy! ♡

A lot of places are named after historical events, battles, and people, so keep that in mind. God/Goddess names tied to your world also work well. Places are also often named after things that the area is known for, like Georgia being known for its peaches.
My brain was fried by the end of this so feel free to add more!
I hope you find this reference helpful and good luck world-building!

++ HALLOWEEN 2018
Tumblr media
ALL SOULS A day of remembrance and intercession. Without the prayers and sacrifices of their families and loved ones, the faithful departed may not be cleansed of their venal sins, and thereby cannot attain beatific vision. On November 2nd, prayers are sung and offerings are made to aid lost souls in transcending purgatory. An incense blend that invokes the higher qualities of mercy and compassion, mingled with the soft, sugared currant scent of offertory soul cakes.
Tumblr media

- Lonnie Johnson
A ward against evil: bay rum, whiskey, cigar smoke, black pepper, and salt.
Tumblr media
BONFIRE TOFFEE Our spin on a traditional Guy Fawkes Night treat: treacle toffee soaked in rich, dark bourbon.
Tumblr media
DIA DE LOS MUERTOS A joyous celebration of La Catarina, La Flaca, La Muerte... Glorious, Beautiful Death. In Mexico, death is not something to be feared or hated; She is embraced, loved, and adored. La Muerte is fêted, as the celebrant "...chases after it, mocks it, courts it, hugs it, sleeps with it; it is his favorite plaything and his most lasting love." This is a Mexican paean to La Huesuda: dry, crackling leaves, the incense smoke of altars honoring Death and the Dead, funeral bouquets, the candies, chocolates, foods and tobacco of the ofrenda, amaranth, sweet cactus blossom and desert cereus.
Tumblr media
FEEDING THE DEAD A barrel of beer, a pyramid of cakes, and three sticks of incense.
Tumblr media
GHOST MUSIC Gloomy and bare the organ-loft, Bent-backed and blind the organist. From rafters looming shadowy, From the pipes’ tuneful company, Drifted together drowsily, Innumerable, formless, dim, The ghosts of long-dead melodies, Of anthems, stately, thunderous, Of Kyries shrill and tremulous: In melancholy drowsy-sweet They huddled there in harmony. Like bats at noontide rafter-hung.
- Robert Graves
Sheets of white musk and lavender curling around a melancholy song of violet root, iris, neroli, and honeysuckle.
Tumblr media
GHOULISH Creepy like Creepy and as spooky as Spooky, this is the scent of a black cherry and coconut amaretto confection gently laced with saffron.
Tumblr media
THE HAG The Hag is astride, This night for to ride; The Devill and shee together: Through thick, and through thin, Now out, and then in, Though ne'r so foule be the weather.
A Thorn or a Burr She takes for a Spurre: With a lash of a Bramble she rides now, Through Brakes and through Bryars, O're Ditches, and Mires, She followes the Spirit that guides now.
No Beast, for his food, Dares now range the wood; But husht in his laire he lies lurking: While mischiefs, by these, On Land and on Seas, At noone of Night are working,
The storme will arise, And trouble the skies; This night, and more for the wonder, The ghost from the Tomb Affrighted shall come, Cal'd out by the clap of the Thunder.
Black musk, bay leaves, galangal, bourbon vetiver, blackcurrant, and rum.
Tumblr media
THE HARE In the black furrow of a field I saw an old witch-hare this night; And she cocked her lissome ear, And she eyed the moon so bright, And she nibbled o' the green; And I whispered 'Whsst! witch-hare,' Away like a ghostie o'er the field She fled, and left the moonlight there.
A leaper between worlds, the tiny trickster; she soars through liminal spaces, dancing in the strange shadows of dawn and twilight.
Warm fur and mandrake root, blue sage and tall grasses, honeysuckle-tinged moonlight, carrot seed, comfrey, and dandelion.
Tumblr media
HUESOS DE SANTO On All Saints Day, Spanish families visit their loved ones in the cemeteries, keeping vigil throughout the evening, saying prayers for the dead. Family burial plots are cleaned and tended, and graves are adorned with gladiolas, chrysanthemums, and roses. Bone-shaped pastries called Saint's Bones, or the Bones of the Holy, are baked and shared in honor of the souls in Purgatory, and to remind us of those who no longer share our repast, but with whom we one day hope to be reunited with again.
Orange-glazed cake, dotted with anise seed, and filled with custard, set beside a bouquet of celebratory funeral flowers.
Tumblr media
INSIDE THE GOLDEN AMBER OF HER EYEBALLS A ghost, though invisible, still is like a place your sight can knock on, echoing; but here within this thick black pelt, your strongest gaze will be absorbed and utterly disappear:
just as a raving madman, when nothing else can ease him, charges into his dark night howling, pounds on the padded wall, and feels the rage being taken in and pacified.
She seems to hide all looks that have ever fallen into her, so that, like an audience, she can look them over, menacing and sullen, and curl to sleep with them. But all at once
as if awakened, she turns her face to yours; and with a shock, you see yourself, tiny, inside the golden amber of her eyeballs suspended, like a prehistoric fly.
- Rainer Maria Rilke
Sleek black fur and gleaming amber shining in the shadows, a rumble of myrrh, and claws as sharp as ti leaf.
Tumblr media
LAMBS-WOOL According to William Shepard Walsh, the Gentleman's Magazine for May of 1784 stated, "this is a constant ingredient at merrymaking on Holy Eve." He also quotes Vallancey's etymological speculation: "The first day of November was dedicated to the angel presiding over fruits, seeds, etc., and was therefore named La Mas Ubhal, -- that is, the day of the apple fruit, -- and being pronounced Lamasool, the English have corrupted the name to Lambs-wool."
A popular holy day beverage in 18th century Ireland: roasted apples mashed into warmed milk and ale, with nutmeg, sugar, ginger, and clove.
Tumblr media
MAGNIFICENT AUTUMN By what a subtle alchemy the green leaves are transmuted into gold, as if molten by the fiery blaze of the hot sun! A magic covering spreads over the whole forest, and brightens into more gorgeous hues. The tree-tops seem bathed with the gold and crimson of an Italian sunset. Here and there a shade of green, here and there a tinge of purple, and a stain of scarlet so deep and rich, that the most cunning artifice of man is pale beside it. A thousand delicate shades melt into each other. They blend fantastically into one deep mass. They spread over the forest like a tapestry woven with a thousand hues.
Magnificent Autumn! He comes not like a pilgrim, clad in russet weeds. He comes not like a hermit, clad in gray. But he comes like a warrior, with the stain of blood upon his brazen mail. His crimson scarf is rent. His scarlet banner drips with gore. His step is like a flail upon the threshing floor.
The scene changes.
It is the Indian summer. The rising sun blazes through the misty air like a conflagration. A yellowish, smoky haze fills the atmosphere; and
A filmy mist,
Lies like a silver lining on the sky.
The wind is soft and low. It wafts to us the odor of forest leaves, that hang wilted on the dripping branches, or drop into the stream. Their gorgeous tints are gone, as if the autumnal rains had washed them out. Orange, yellow, and scarlet, all are changed to one melancholy russet hue. The birds, too, have taken wing, and have left their roofless dwellings. Not the whistle of a robin, not the twitter of an eavesdropping swallow, not the carol of one sweet, familiar voice! All gone. Only the dismal cawing of a crow, as he sits and curses, that the harvest is over, – or the chit-chat of an idle squirrel, – the noisy denizen of a hollow tree, – the mendicant friar of a large parish, – the absolute monarch of a dozen acorns!
Another change.
The wind sweeps through the forest with a sound like the blast of a trumpet. The dry leaves whirl in eddies through the air. A fret-work of hoar-frost covers the plain. The stagnant water in the pools and ditches is frozen into fantastic figures. Nature ceases from her labors, and prepares for the great change. In the low-hanging clouds, the sharp air, like a busy shuttle, weaves her shroud of snow. There is a melancholy and continual roar in the tops of the tall pines, like the roar of a cataract. It is the funeral anthem of the dying year.
A scent that wanders through the Ages of Autumn, from the last green leaf to the first breath of winter.
Tumblr media
MIDNIGHT BONFIRE Lighting the path between worlds, the beacon at the threshold: night-blooming jasmine, smoldering maple leaves, a cluster of patchouli and blackened ti leaf, black sage, and pinewood smoke.
Tumblr media
PUMPKIN CRÈME BRULEE With vanilla bean scrapings.
Tumblr media
PUMPKIN DUST Shavings of white pumpkin rind and honey powder.
Tumblr media
PUMPKIN MUSK AND BLACK OUDH A strangely romantic, disturbingly erotic perfume.
Tumblr media
PUMPKIN TOBACCO Sweet black tobacco infused with dried pumpkin and soaked in bourbon.
Tumblr media
SAMHAIN Truly the scent of autumn itself -- damp woods, fir needle, and black patchouli with the gentlest touches of warm pumpkin, clove, nutmeg, allspice, sweet red apple and mullein.
Tumblr media
SAMHAINOPHOBIA The Fear of Halloween
Menacing Haitian vetiver, patchouli, and clove with a shock of bourbon geranium, grim oakmoss, and dread-inspiring balsams pierce the innocuous scent of autumn leaves.
Tumblr media
SCARECROW TURNED PHILOSOPHER Once I said to a scarecrow, “You must be tired of standing in this lonely field.”
And he said, “The joy of scaring is a deep and lasting one, and I never tire of it.”
Said I, after a minute of thought, “It is true; for I too have known that joy.”
Said he, “Only those who are stuffed with straw can know it.”
Then I left him, not knowing whether he had complimented or belittled me.
A year passed, during which the scarecrow turned philosopher.
And when I passed by him again I saw two crows building a nest under his hat.
- Kahlil Gibran
Corn husks waving on an autumn breeze, beams of amber sunlight, hay bales, and late summer wildflowers.
Tumblr media
SUCK IT Sexy and suckable: black cherry brandy.
Tumblr media
THIS WAN WHITE HUMMING HIVE And where should the living feel alive But here in this wan white humming hive, As the moon wastes down, and the dawn turns cold, And one by one they creep back to the fold? And where should a man hold his mate and say: "One more, one more, ere we go their way"? For the year's on the turn, and it's All Souls' night, When the living can learn by the churchyard light.
White patchouli leaf, beeswax, ambergris, and pale incense.
Tumblr media
WHEN COLORS ALL TO BLACK ARE CAST In night when colors all to black are cast, Distinction lost, or gone down with the light; The eye a watch to inward senses placed, Not seeing, yet still having powers of sight,
Gives vain alarums to the inward sense, Where fear stirred up with witty tyranny, Confounds all powers, and thorough self-offense, Doth forge and raise impossibility:
Such as in thick depriving darknesses, Proper reflections of the error be, And images of self-confusednesses, Which hurt imaginations only see;
And from this nothing seen, tells news of devils, Which but expressions be of inward evils.
- Lord Brooke Fulke Greville
Ink-black musk and dried blackberries, midnight opoponax and sweet labdanum.
Tumblr media
THE WITCH BRIDE A fair witch crept to a young man's side, And he kiss'd her and took her for his bride.
But a Shape came in at the dead of night, And fill'd the room with snowy light.
And he saw how in his arms there lay A thing more frightful than mouth may say.
And he rose in haste, and follow'd the Shape Till morning crown'd an eastern cape.
And he girded himself, and follow'd still When sunset sainted the western hill.
But, mocking and thwarting, clung to his side, Weary day!-the foul Witch-Bride.
(Aw, c'mon, Allingham. Foul is a pretty strong choice of words, dontcha think?)
Pale and lovely, with eyes belladonna-wide: hemlock blossoms and ghostly nightshade veiled by wisteria, white frankincense, black amber, and narcissus resin.
Tumblr media
YIPE In the vein (GET IT?) of Boo, Suck It, and Spooky, this is a gushing font of sweet bloody black cherry cream and crushed dried blackberries.
++ ALL HALLOWS CHAOS
Tumblr media
Turbulent, disordered beauty: sensitive to initial conditions, topologically mixed, and approached by periodic orbits with abandon. A dynamical system expressed through scent.
Each bottle of Chaos Theory is truly unique, a fragrant fractal, and an exercise in the joy of chance and uncertainty! Each is a one-of-a-kind, utterly random combination of scents, the composition of which is based on whim, mood and gut instinct. Each bottle is numbered, and each bottle is unique.
Hail Eris! After a long hiatus, Chaos Theory is back!
This year, the aforementioned chaos is expressing itself through decidedly seasonal metaphors associated with gathering the harvest and welcoming the “dark half” of the year. Is it comfort you seek, or incantations whispered through a tear in the Veil? Thanks to the options below, you don’t have to choose — you can have it both ways! This is an exercise in the joy of chance and uncertainty! Each bottle is a one-of-a-kind, utterly random combination of scents, the composition of which is based on whim, mood and gut instinct.
Most common allergens have been omitted from the experiment. No pennyroyal, no nuts, no cinnamon, no cassia. Regardless, if you have any sensitivities, please do not participate in Chaos Theory. The contents of the oils are not recorded [that’s the whole point!] and we will not be able to answer questions about specific bottles of CT:VIII or guarantee that an allergen is not present in your order.
By purchasing CT:VIII, you agree to absolve Black Phoenix of any responsibility related to an allergic reaction to one of the oils in this series. Please make a responsible choice, and use caution and discretion when ordering. This is intended to be a fun, exciting project.
Each CT:VIII scent has a base inspired by one of our favorite ‘Weenies, in wildly varying proportions:

ALL HALLOWS CHAOS: PUMPKIN SPICE
Variety is the very spice of life, That gives it all its flavor.”
― William Cowper, 1785
Forget about the War on Christmas — the year’s most contentious seasonal battle is actually waged over this inescapable melange of palate-massaging flavors. We’ve got the formula down pat, and invite you to join us in a mad-science experiment: Just how far can we bend it before it breaks?
Tumblr media
ALL HALLOWS CHAOS: SAMHAIN
“Invention, it must be humbly admitted, does not consist in creating out of void, but out of chaos.” ― Mary Shelley, 1831 This Samhain, we’re reveling in the desecration of a classic blend: “Damp woods, fir needle, and black patchouli with the gentlest touches of warm pumpkin, clove, nutmeg, allspice, sweet red apple and mullein.”
Tumblr media
++ HALLOWEEN: MASQUE OF THE RED DEATH
Art by Tenebrous Kate
Words by Edgar Allan Poe

THE RED DEATH The "Red Death" had long devastated the country. No pestilence had ever been so fatal, or so hideous. Blood was its Avatar and its seal --the redness and the horror of blood. There were sharp pains, and sudden dizziness, and then profuse bleeding at the pores, with dissolution. The scarlet stains upon the body and especially upon the face of the victim, were the pest ban which shut him out from the aid and from the sympathy of his fellow-men. And the whole seizure, progress and termination of the disease, were the incidents of half an hour.
Splatters of red musk, bruise-purple violets, vetiver, and pimento.

HAPPY AND DAUNTLESS AND SAGACIOUS But the Prince Prospero was happy and dauntless and sagacious. When his dominions were half depopulated, he summoned to his presence a thousand hale and light-hearted friends from among the knights and dames of his court, and with these retired to the deep seclusion of one of his castellated abbeys. This was an extensive and magnificent structure, the creation of the prince's own eccentric yet august taste. A strong and lofty wall girdled it in. This wall had gates of iron. The courtiers, having entered, brought furnaces and massy hammers and welded the bolts. They resolved to leave means neither of ingress or egress to the sudden impulses of despair or of frenzy from within. The abbey was amply provisioned. With such precautions the courtiers might bid defiance to contagion.
Imprisoned in frenzied joy: ribbons of raspberry and red currant streaming through thick goat’s milk.

IT WAS FOLLY TO GRIEVE, OR TO THINK The external world could take care of itself. In the meantime it was folly to grieve, or to think.
Ginger-squeezed champagne with crushed diamonds, orange blossoms, and peach blossoms.

THERE WAS BEAUTY, THERE WAS WINE The prince had provided all the appliances of pleasure. There were buffoons, there were improvisatori, there were ballet-dancers, there were musicians, there was Beauty, there was wine. All these and security were within. Without was the "Red Death."
Gushes of black and red wine splattering damask rose and white pear, engulfed in thick clove incense.

A MASKED BALL OF THE MOST UNUSUAL MAGNIFICENCE It was toward the close of the fifth or sixth month of his seclusion, and while the pestilence raged most furiously abroad, that the Prince Prospero entertained his thousand friends at a masked ball of the most unusual magnificence.
Opulent golden oudh, red benzoin, and bitter almond.
Tumblr media
A GIGANTIC CLOCK OF EBONY It was in this apartment, also, that there stood against the western wall, a gigantic clock of ebony. Its pendulum swung to and fro with a dull, heavy, monotonous clang; and when the minute-hand made the circuit of the face, and the hour was to be stricken, there came from the brazen lungs of the clock a sound which was clear and loud and deep and exceedingly musical, but of so peculiar a note and emphasis that, at each lapse of an hour, the musicians of the orchestra were constrained to pause, momentarily, in their performance, to hearken to the sound; and thus the waltzers perforce ceased their evolutions; and there was a brief disconcert of the whole gay company; and, while the chimes of the clock yet rang, it was observed that the giddiest grew pale, and the more aged and sedate passed their hands over their brows as if in confused reverie or meditation. But when the echoes had fully ceased, a light laughter at once pervaded the assembly; the musicians looked at each other and smiled as if at their own nervousness and folly, and made whispering vows, each to the other, that the next chiming of the clock should produce in them no similar emotion; and then, after the lapse of sixty minutes, (which embrace three thousand and six hundred seconds of the Time that flies,) there came yet another chiming of the clock, and then were the same disconcert and tremulousness and meditation as before.
The chiming of the clock: ebony wood and black pepper, narcissus blossom and tuberose, clanging with dull, heavy opoponax and thick olibanum.
Tumblr media
THE TASTES OF THE DUKE WERE PECULIAR But, in spite of these things, it was a gay and magnificent revel. The tastes of the duke were peculiar. He had a fine eye for colors and effects. He disregarded the decora of mere fashion. His plans were bold and fiery, and his conceptions glowed with barbaric lustre. There are some who would have thought him mad. His followers felt that he was not. It was necessary to hear and see and touch him to be sure that he was not.
The swirl of a thousand glittering vices: absinthe and laudanum, opium poppy and neroli, star anise and black currant, whip leather and iron shackles, gilded vanilla flower and King mandarin.
Tumblr media
GLARE AND GLITTER AND PIQUANCY AND PHANTASM He had directed, in great part, the moveable embellishments of the seven chambers, upon occasion of this great fete; and it was his own guiding taste which had given character to the masqueraders. Be sure they were grotesque. There were much glare and glitter and piquancy and phantasm -- much of what has been since seen in "Hernani." There were arabesque figures with unsuited limbs and appointments. There were delirious fancies such as the madman fashions.
Delirious fancies such as the madman fashions, arabesque figures with unsuited limbs and appointments: orris absolute and leather contorted by cherry and orange blossom.
Tumblr media
A MULTITUDE OF DREAMS There was much of the beautiful, much of the wanton, much of the bizarre, something of the terrible, and not a little of that which might have excited disgust. To and fro in the seven chambers there stalked, in fact, a multitude of dreams. And these -- the dreams -- writhed in and about, taking hue from the rooms, and causing the wild music of the orchestra to seem as the echo of their steps.
A blackened lavender mist, thick with opoponax, licorice root, and benzoin.
Tumblr media
ALL IS SILENT SAVE THE VOICE OF THE CLOCK And, anon, there strikes the ebony clock which stands in the hall of the velvet. And then, for a moment, all is still, and all is silent save the voice of the clock. The dreams are stiff-frozen as they stand. But the echoes of the chime die away -- they have endured but an instant -- and a light, half-subdued laughter floats after them as they depart. And now again the music swells, and the dreams live, and writhe to and fro more merrily than ever, taking hue from the many-tinted windows through which stream the rays from the tripods.
Dreams writhing to and fro, bubbling up from half-subdued laughter: pink peppercorn, jasmine sambac, and cypress bubbling up through half-subdued white lavender, stabbed through with streams of red musk and black currant.
Tumblr media
THE NIGHT IS WANING AWAY But to the chamber which lies most westwardly of the seven, there are now none of the maskers who venture; for the night is waning away; and there flows a ruddier light through the blood-colored panes; and the blackness of the sable drapery appals; and to him whose foot falls upon the sable carpet, there comes from the near clock of ebony a muffled peal more solemnly emphatic than any which reaches their ears who indulge in the more remote gaieties of the other apartments. But these other apartments were densely crowded, and in them beat feverishly the heart of life.
Night-blooming jasmine and cereus reflected through ruddy musk and crimson amber.
Tumblr media
THE SOUNDING OF MIDNIGHT UPON THE CLOCK And the revel went whirlingly on, until at length there commenced the sounding of midnight upon the clock. And then the music ceased, as I have told; and the evolutions of the waltzers were quieted; and there was an uneasy cessation of all things as before. But now there were twelve strokes to be sounded by the bell of the clock; and thus it happened, perhaps, that more of thought crept, with more of time, into the meditations of the thoughtful among those who revelled. And thus, too, it happened, perhaps, that before the last echoes of the last chime had utterly sunk into silence, there were many individuals in the crowd who had found leisure to become aware of the presence of a masked figure which had arrested the attention of no single individual before. And the rumor of this new presence having spread itself whisperingly around, there arose at length from the whole company a buzz, or murmur, expressive of disapprobation and surprise --then, finally, of terror, of horror, and of disgust.
Terror, horror, and disgust: a bowel-churning sweet clench of myrhh and green musk in a pool of suffocating black moss and a shock of white cognac.
Tumblr media
THE SCARLET HORROR In an assembly of phantasms such as I have painted, it may well be supposed that no ordinary appearance could have excited such sensation. In truth the masquerade license of the night was nearly unlimited; but the figure in question had out-Heroded Herod, and gone beyond the bounds of even the prince's indefinite decorum. There are chords in the hearts of the most reckless which cannot be touched without emotion. Even with the utterly lost, to whom life and death are equally jests, there are matters of which no jest can be made. The whole company, indeed, seemed now deeply to feel that in the costume and bearing of the stranger neither wit nor propriety existed. The figure was tall and gaunt, and shrouded from head to foot in the habiliments of the grave. The mask which concealed the visage was made so nearly to resemble the countenance of a stiffened corpse that the closest scrutiny must have had difficulty in detecting the cheat. And yet all this might have been endured, if not approved, by the mad revellers around. But the mummer had gone so far as to assume the type of the Red Death. His vesture was dabbled in blood --and his broad brow, with all the features of the face, was besprinkled with the scarlet horror.
When the eyes of Prince Prospero fell upon this spectral image (which with a slow and solemn movement, as if more fully to sustain its role, stalked to and fro among the waltzers) he was seen to be convulsed, in the first moment with a strong shudder either of terror or distaste; but, in the next, his brow reddened with rage.
"Who dares?" he demanded hoarsely of the courtiers who stood near him -- "who dares insult us with this blasphemous mockery? Seize him and unmask him -- that we may know whom we have to hang at sunrise, from the battlements!"
Blasphemous mockery: blood musk and vetiver.
Tumblr media
A GROUP OF PALE COURTIERS It was in the eastern or blue chamber in which stood the Prince Prospero as he uttered these words. They rang throughout the seven rooms loudly and clearly -- for the prince was a bold and robust man, and the music had become hushed at the waving of his hand.
It was in the blue room where stood the prince, with a group of pale courtiers by his side. At first, as he spoke, there was a slight rushing movement of this group in the direction of the intruder, who at the moment was also near at hand, and now, with deliberate and stately step, made closer approach to the speaker.
A sycophant’s polished stench: green musk fougere, lime, and rose-tufted wig powder.
Tumblr media
A CERTAIN NAMELESS AWE But from a certain nameless awe with which the mad assumptions of the mummer had inspired the whole party, there were found none who put forth hand to seize him; so that, unimpeded, he passed within a yard of the prince's person; and, while the vast assembly, as if with one impulse, shrank from the centres of the rooms to the walls, he made his way uninterruptedly, but with the same solemn and measured step which had distinguished him from the first, through the blue chamber to the purple -- through the purple to the green -- through the green to the orange -- through this again to the white -- and even thence to the violet, ere a decided movement had been made to arrest him.
Death unimpeded: bone-white sandalwood, dry cognac, and chilled ambergris accord.
Tumblr media
A DEADLY TERROR THAT HAD SEIZED UPON ALL It was then, however, that the Prince Prospero, maddening with rage and the shame of his own momentary cowardice, rushed hurriedly through the six chambers, while none followed him on account of a deadly terror that had seized upon all.
He bore aloft a drawn dagger, and had approached, in rapid impetuosity, to within three or four feet of the retreating figure, when the latter, having attained the extremity of the velvet apartment, turned suddenly and confronted his pursuer. There was a sharp cry --and the dagger dropped gleaming upon the sable carpet, upon which, instantly afterwards, fell prostrate in death the Prince Prospero. Then, summoning the wild courage of despair, a throng of the revellers at once threw themselves into the black apartment, and, seizing the mummer, whose tall figure stood erect and motionless within the shadow of the ebony clock, gasped in unutterable horror at finding the grave-cerements and corpse-like mask which they handled with so violent a rudeness, untenanted by any tangible form.
The wild courage of despair: a screech of blood orange and a splash of blood entangled in a corpse-mask of tattered white sandalwood stained with balsam and a grime-crusted winding sheet.
Tumblr media
ILLIMITABLE DOMINION OVER ALL And now was acknowledged the presence of the Red Death. He had come like a thief in the night. And one by one dropped the revellers in the blood-bedewed halls of their revel, and died each in the despairing posture of his fall. And the life of the ebony clock went out with that of the last of the gay. And the flames of the tripods expired. And Darkness and Decay and the Red Death held illimitable dominion over all.
Darkness, Decay, and the Red Death: blood musk and black tobacco, birch tar and bleeding cypress sap.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: ARKHAM’S PICKMAN GALLERY ACQUIRES CURIOUS COLLECTION OF GOAT ART, DEEMED ‘GREATEST OF ALL TIME’ Greatest Of All Time: Portraits of Genus Capra on view at the Pickman Gallery from September 22 to December 28, 2018, Arkham, MA — On view from September 18 through December 28, 2018 at Pickman Gallery, Arkham, MA, Greatest Of All Time: Portraits of Genus Capra. Greatest Of All Time is guest curated by the Santa Fe Art Institute’s Antonia Vasquez-Thackeray, who also holds a degree in Livestock Science.  In this first-of-its-kind exhibition, Mx. Vasquez-Thackeray explores the social co-evolution of humankind and goatkind, a history which stretches back at least 10,000 years. Researchers note that goat remains have been found at archaeological sites in Western Asia including Jericho, Choga Mami, Djeitun, and Çayönü. Via their innate curiosity and horizontally-pupilled eyes, goats have enjoyed a unique view of human civilization, and our ancestors’ myths and legends have proven us nothing if not fearful of their scrutiny. “Our projections in terms of goat consciousness and goat archetypes have eclipsed anything a goat might tell us about us, or itself,“ Vasquez-Thackeray writes in the introduction to her upcoming MY GOAT, MY INQUISITOR, a salvo against the bias and anthropomorphism that has infected the relations between these two closely interrelated worlds -- but which carefully does not disavow the propensity for deceit, diabolism and witchcraft within the Caprian mind. Greatest of All Time consists of works hand-selected to commune with our species’ most recent common ancestor. About this evolutionary MacGuffin, Max Robinson, Ph.D. Molecular Biology and Biotechnology & Evolutionary Genetics, University of Washington, has written: “Millions of years ago, there was some kind of animal that eventually evolved into both goats and humans. It probably had claws rather than hooves or hands. It had a liver, four legs, eyes, and a brain, just like humans and goats still do.” Unfathomably, a lineage extends directly from that ancestor to this season’s exhibition, which will serve as a family reunion of sorts: several goats from Vasquez-Thackeray’s personal herd will be in residence as docents throughout the duration of the show. (Their reactions to the art as well as to the guests will be recorded via motion-capture and analyzed by individuals from SFAI, MIT, and, by special request, members of Arkham’s Thousand Young Lodge.

How to Create a Beautiful Garden in a Small Urban Space

A Beautiful Garden Sanctuary in a Small Urban Space
You may think that enjoying a meal and a glass of wine in dappled sunlight surrounded by birdsong and scented flowers is a luxury, but the smallest city space can be transformed into a green idyll and there is room for a small tree in the tiniest garden.
Plants are particularly important in our densely populated urban areas. They soften the hard lines of city landscapes and lift people’s spirits with their living colour, scent and movement.
Planting hedges, shrubs and trees helps cut down noise from traffic (and neighbours!) and also attracts all sorts of birds and insects that are otherwise struggling to find habitats.
This article will guide you through a multitude of advice regarding the creation of a garden. Here are some of the topics that are covered:
Practical considerations
Garden ponds
Design elements

Transform your urban space into a green and peaceful garden sanctuary…

How I Started Gardening
My interest in gardening became an obsession after my partner and I bought a terraced house in Cardiff 20 years ago with a south-facing garden.
The main area was tiny—about 14 ft wide by 30 ft long, bounded by 5 ft high stone and brick walls with uneven ground and a fine crop of weeds. The space has gradually been transformed and is now a leafy and private paradise with a wildlife pond and a small dining area.
The garden is a source of inspiration for my paintings as well as a sanctuary and a playground for our cat! I love to sit out there with a book and the scent of the flowers and enjoy the last rays of evening sunshine.
Using my own experience I have set out some ideas, guidelines and tips on creating your own garden haven.

How to Create Your Beautiful Small Garden (4 Tips)
First of all, you need to decide what you want your garden to be. Here are a few questions to consider.
Do you want a peaceful place to relax after a day’s work, a wildlife haven, a place to entertain friends and family or all the above?
Do you like hands-on gardening or would you prefer it to be low maintenance?
Do you need to consider the needs of children, pets or the disabled?
All these things will have an impact on how you design your garden.
1. Practical Considerations
Boundaries: Are they adequate, or do they need renewing? It’s a good idea to consider this at the start of your project.
Privacy: Do you need to add height to prevent being overlooked.
Bad views: Do you need to mask unsightly views?
Noise pollution: A hedge will help cut down noise levels. Background noise can be disguised with the sound of trickling or bubbling water from a water feature.
Access: To gates, sheds and bins, etc.
Soil type: Is your soil sandy or clay or something in between? This will dictate which plants do well.
Soil pH: You can buy a cheap soil test kit from any garden centre—this will also help you to choose the right plants.
Direction: Are you sun-drenched or in shade for much of the day. Make a sketch of where the shadows fall to help you decide where to put seating and dining areas.
Storage space: Do you need somewhere for your compost bin, water butt, refuse bins, greenhouse or shed?
Views of the garden from your windows: Consider what you will be looking out upon from inside the house.
Flooding: If any areas suffer from this, you could consider digging down to find out what is causing it and add a soak-away or other type of drainage.

We Decided a Garden Pond Worked for Our Space
When thinking about what to do with our small space, we wanted to attract wildlife and decided to put in a pond. Having dug down to make a hole big enough to install a moulded fibreglass kidney-shaped pond we found a WW2 air-raid shelter which took some work to dig out!
Having removed most of the bricks and corrugated iron we put down a thick layer of sand to cushion the fibreglass and made sure the pond was level before filling it with water. Pieces of granite found in the garden were cemented around the pond to hide the edge.
After a few days, the water had settled and we added oxygenating plants, a dwarf water lily and a couple of irises. Wildlife will soon start to colonise your pond and birds will be attracted to drink and bathe.
If you know someone with an established pond you could ask for a small bucket of water in order to introduce pond life more speedily, but make sure you don’t introduce anything you might regret later.
It’s a good idea to provide something—sticks or stones—to help non-aquatic creatures to climb out if they fall in!

2. Design Elements
Formal or informal: Hard edges or flowing lines. Formal designs look great if you want a contemporary look, are growing vegetables in raised beds or want to use clipped box edges around flower beds.
Garden furniture: For relaxing or dining. Consider whether to build some seating into the plan using seat-height walls to contain flower beds with scented plants.
Edible plants: Fruit, vegetables and herbs in beds or containers. Herbs in pots and window boxes look great, while thymes and camomile can be planted in paving. A potager combines edible and decorative plants to great effect. A fruit tree will add height, attract wildlife, and make a great feature.
Water: Wildlife pond, formal pool, spout or bubbling rock . . . there are many features available to suit all tastes. Water can add sound which may serve to mask other noise or provide a soothing atmosphere.
Pergolas, arbours, arches: To add privacy, more seating, height and interest with climbing plants.
Lighting: Do you want spotlights or LEDs or solar-powered lamps—may be something to consider before laying paving . . .
Art: Placing sculpture or art in key places creates a focus, draws the eye and can add interest to an otherwise featureless spot. Clever use of mirrors can create the illusion of space. Looking for that perfect piece of art can be fun too.

3. Designing Your Garden
Once you have decided what elements to include in your garden, and taken all the practical considerations into account, you can sketch out where you want your beds, paths and hard surfaces.
If you can, mark out these areas with a length of hose or sand in a bottle. If you are planning a seating or dining area make sure there is enough room for the garden furniture. Consider adding verticals such as arches or small trees, where
In a small space, you need to make the most of every available surface. Think about planting walls with plants such as saxifraga and campanula. Primroses have naturalised everywhere in the garden providing lovely scent and colour in April.
If a plant really likes your garden (and you like the plant!) go with the flow.
In May purple pillows of Campanula grace the stone walls.
4. Choosing Beautiful Plants for Your Small Garden
My garden is on the coast of South Wales in the UK—an area with fairly mild winters and wet summers. Choose plants that are suitable for your particular climate, as well as taking sun, shade, water, wind and dry soil into consideration and you will be rewarded.
A lot of plants will tolerate any sort of soil but some are more demanding and in order to avoid disappointment it is best to do a soil test to gauge acidity and work out whether you have sandy, gritty, chalky soil which is free-draining or heavier clay soil which can be prone to water-logging.
Whatever you have, there will be plants that love those conditions, although areas of deep shade can be challenging. If the soil is very poor you might want to improve it by adding organic matter or topsoil. We have clay soil which can get water-logged but on the other hand retains a lot of plant nutrition which can get leached away in sandy, gritty soil.
Use evergreens and trees as the bones of your design to give a permanent structure around which you can add your flowering perennials, bulbs, grasses and ground cover.
Those of you who want a low-maintenance garden could choose slow-growing shrubs and evergreen plants rather than perennials that need cutting back and dividing regularly, or roses that need regular pruning, feeding and dead-heading.
Factors to Consider When Choosing Your Plants
Evergreen plants add structure and interest all year round
Seasonal interest from flowers, foliage, bark and berries
Plants in containers can be used to fill areas with colour when needed and removed when not flowering. Window boxes and hanging baskets allow more colourful planting areas at height.
Texture: Varying the types of foliage makes for textural interest.
Scent: Use scented plants around a seating area and near the house.
Wildlife: By using plants such as lavender, scabious and echinacea and avoiding some of the fancy “double” flowers you will attract more butterflies, bees and other pollinators. If you leave an area untouched, (behind the pond in our garden), it will give insects and amphibians their own little sanctuary.
Fruit and vegetables: From herbs in pots or paving to a specimen fruit tree or growing peas and beans on a wigwam, there are many options. The latter is great for children to try out their green fingers on.
Trees: However tiny the space I believe there is always room for a small tree—perhaps a native tree—to add height, privacy, interest from bark, foliage, fruit or flowers, and a habitat for birds and insects.

Final Thoughts on Creating the Right Garden for You
Gardens are continually changing—that is part of their beauty. When you step out into your garden there will always be something new to marvel at. Some plants outgrow their space and some die because they are short-lived or not happy—I always see this as an opportunity to search for just the right plant to replace it!
There is something so rewarding about making a garden and enjoying the fruits of your labour. Have fun creating your own private paradise and watching it evolve.

Hi Dannie – that does sound like a challenge! It is always a good idea to look at the native plants of your locality and have a look at what plants are thriving in other gardens in your area. I notice there is a Colorado Native Plant Society website, which might be helpful. As your house casts some shade on the garden, you may be able to get away with some less “suitable” planting. It would all depend on the type of soil you have too. I hope this helps

Danielle Schumaker from Boulder, CO on June 18, 2013:
I live in the high desert of Colorado. In the summer, temperatures typically vary from 55 degrees F (13 C) at night to 90 degrees F (32 C) at the hottest time of the day. Sometimes we get an afternoon shower but it is always short-lived; dryness is the primary characteristic of this climate. Our first snow will probably hit in September, the last in May. My house blocks some of the sun to my outdoor space. What would you recommend for plants? Is there anything that wouldn’t die come September?
Helen Lush (author) from Cardiff, Wales, UK on June 17, 2013:
Thank you Danni. I think that, no matter how small the area, you will be rewarded by adding plants – and a couple of larger specimen plants can look better than lots of smaller ones. Even a small tree ( in a container if necessary) can transform the space. Or you could consider vertical planting – use your walls to suspend planting pockets – there are plenty of products on the market nowadays. Have fun!
Danielle Schumaker from Boulder, CO on June 16, 2013:
This is such a lovely Hub. I was drawn to it because I’m torn on my own underwhelming outdoor space, which would require so much work for such a small area that I’m torn on whether to do anything at all. Thanks for pushing me in a creative direction.
Helen Lush (author) from Cardiff, Wales, UK on June 14, 2013:
Thank you very much SpaceShanty and welcome to Hubpages!

Anne from Spain on April 23, 2013:
Hi Daffodilsky. I already voted for you. Many thanks for the link, good luck with the award, and i´m pleased you are able to enjoy your beautiful garden at long last. All my family and lots of friends are in the UK so I know how bad the winter has been. We had a wonderful time until about new years eve here in Spain, unseasonably warm, but then we had gale force winds almost daily until now, and I do mean gale force, it was really wearing for months on end.
Helen Lush (author) from Cardiff, Wales, UK on April 23, 2013:
Thanks so much everyone for all your great and positive comments. Bac2basics I have just visited one of your hubs on a similar subject and will be happy to link up with it! The weather over here in UK has cheered up at last and I am going to be enjoying the garden while it lasts!
Today is the last chance to vote for this hub as a Rising Star if you want to… https://ift.tt/38sdUod Thanks

I loved your hub! It answered a lot of questions I had and some that I hadn’t thought yet. I love the way your garden seems to have space for everything. You designed an area for wildlife, another for flowers, dining, there’s even space for insects!
And congratulation on the HOTD!

Lovely hub that is a superb guide for creating a small space garden that can be enjoyed through its evolutions. Congrats on your Hub of the Day award for a beautiful post!

Congratulations!
Very beautiful, and its great that you included an outline of the design elements.
Rebecca O’Reilly from California on April 22, 2013:
Great ideas and fabulous hub! I noticed you using a flower pot for an umbrella stand–great idea. I am going to try it. We live in limited space with not much of a backyard. I recently planted potted herbs, tomatoes and some flowers. Added a water fountain and suddenly an oasis.
Voted up and useful.
Stephanie Bradberry from New Jersey on April 22, 2013:
Congratulations on your Hub of the Day.
In my area, there is a part of the main city that has a garden tour. Since all the yards are really small and located in the back of each residence, it is interesting to see what they create with their space. One of the most interesting yards has a trellised apricot tree growing on the back fence.
Better Yourself from North Carolina on April 22, 2013:

These are great ideas! Thank you! I like that you offer ideas for different needs, such as noise pollution, privacy, and bad views! I had all of these at my old house and wanted to build a 20 foot wall around my house!

Thank you so much everyone – I’m overwhelmed! I hope you haven’t been put off trying out another tree Mary615 – there are some lovely small trees out there that don’t get too big and don’t mind being underplanted. Thank you bac2basics for putting a link on your hubs. This hub has been put forward for a Rising Star award, so if you would like to vote for it, it would be much appreciated! https://ift.tt/38sdUod

Well done on your HOTD award. Great Hub with some interesting ideas. Thanks for sharing.
Stephanie Henkel from USA on April 22, 2013:
You definitely deserved the HOTD award for this lovely hub! Your tiny garden is a gem. It’s probably taken years for it to reach that level of maturity, but what a great example of what can be done in a small space! I love flowers, and try to plant them so that there is always something blooming, especially around the patio which can be viewed from our kitchen and dining table. You’ve given me some great ideas of plants to add that will enhance my space. Voted up and shared!
Anne from Spain on April 22, 2013:
Hi Daffodilsky.
What a fantastic hub and well worth winning HOTD.
I am living in Spain just now and have a huge garden which I created myself around the swimming pool but am soon to return to the UK and a downsize. I am planning more of a courtyard garden when I return and if it turns out even half as beautiful as yours I will be very happy indeed. I am going to link this hub to all of mine on gardening, hope that´s Ok, will also share and have voted up to the heavens too, it really is superb. You have also earned another follower.

Mary Hyatt from Florida on April 22, 2013:
This is a garden to die for!! Congrats on HOTD. I have a small garden and have tried to incorporate some of your ideas. I have a small water fountain and patio area but nothing like yours.
I have made the mistake of planting a tree that grew higher than I expected and the roots became invasive, so I had to have it removed.
Voted UP, and will share and Pin.
Ameliam Michelle from London, England on April 22, 2013:
Loved reading your hub..
lot of information.. good job.
Patricia Scott from North Central Florida on April 22, 2013:
Isn’t it nice to know that a sweet garden can be yours even if space is limited?? Thanks for sharing your tips with us. This reminds me of the little garden my Aunt had years ago. The walk down memory lane was welcome.

Great hub, voted up. I love gardening – vegtable and decorative garden. Currently I live in apartment and all I have is some plants (orchids). I miss the garden we had back at home (when I was still living with my parents). I hope that in my future I will be able to have my own garden.

Thank you flourishanyway! I don’t mean to make it look too simple as gardening is one subject where everyone has their own way of doing it and even when you are doing it right things can go horribly wrong! The thing is once you’ve got the bug it’s so rewarding

FlourishAnyway from USA on April 18, 2013:
What a wonderfully written hub with excellent photos. You make it seem so simple.
Helen Lush (author) from Cardiff, Wales, UK on March 28, 2013:
Thanks all for your lovely comments. Here in Wales the problem tends to be too much water! There are some lovely plants available that tolerate drought that might make your life easier sgbrown. Happy gardening!
Sheila Brown from Southern Oklahoma on March 28, 2013:
We have a huge yard and I have incorporated more flower beds than I can keep up with. It gets very hot here in southern Oklahoma and I have had to cut down on some of my flower beds as I can’t keep them watered well enough. (We are on well water only, I can run the well dry!) I love some of the plants I have seen here and plan on going shopping for many of them. I love this hub! Voting up and more!

Deborah Neyens from Iowa on March 28, 2013:
What a lovely garden space you have, and a great list of considerations for someone who wants to design their own space. Very well done hub!
Paul Edmondson from Burlingame, CA on March 27, 2013:
Wow. I loved your hub. Very cool. We have a good sized backyard, but the only place that gets sun is on the deck. We are trying to figure out how to get a garden on it.

Sweet Dreams Are Made Of This: Chapter One
Under the homes of those who slept soundly; beneath the roots of trees that had been growing for centuries; below the ground where not a sound could penetrate; hidden in a man’s worst nightmare, sat the king of the underworld.
“Just for one day?”
“No.”
“An hour?”
“No.”
“Ten minutes?”
“No.”
“Fine, three hours..”
“That’s higher then your last three offers Jon.”
Not many people would test the king of the underworld. If his throne the size of the grandest of monuments failed to intimidate them, then the king himself would willingly oblige to strike fear in his subjects hearts.
He wore a cold expression most of the time, he would often rest his fist against his short beard as he listened to a mere mortal beg for another chance at life. He didn’t even look at them, his expression was always tired when they began to beg.
His hair was curly and dark, but in the faintest of lights it looked red, as though a few stray embers had woven themselves through each strand.
The few times his grace did look upon a helpless soul only occurred when that soul had tested him, tried his patience, or if their crime was truly despicable.
One such man waltzed into the grand hall and refused to bow before his new king. They called him Ramsay; he was an enemy to the gods and had disrespected them on more than one occasion. One god he dared to insult was the king’s sister, Sansa the goddess of women, marriage, and childbirth. He had attempted to rape her but her husband had made sure to send him to the underworld where he belonged.
The king had disagreed with this punishment, he had said it was too kind. He looked up at Ramsay, his cold blue eyes shot through any confident exterior the tyrant had to offer. And with the flick of his wrist, the king sent Ramsay to burn in a fire pit for all eternity.
No, not many men could speak idly to the king of the underworld and live to tell the tale. This however was no mere man, but Jon, king of the gods, and the king of the underworlds brother in law.
“Robb this isn’t healthy, don’t make me play the king card.” Jon said in a mock stern voice.
“You’re in my domain, I am your king when we are here.” Robb sighed, though he chuckled at his friends expense.
“I don’t like you being stuck down here with nothing but the dead to entertain you.” Jon began, he had started pacing like he always did when conflicted.
“Oddly enough the dead don’t particularly enjoy my company, particularly those I’ve sentenced to eternal damnation.”
Jon stopped his pacing, “Was that suppose to be a joke?”
“Yes, granted not a very funny one…”
“See, You’ve been down here too long. When was the last time you visited the upper world?”
“Now let’s see, there was your wedding to my sister?” Robb offered.
“That was three hundred years ago.”
“And I still have a hangover, that was some strong wine you served.” Robb said, getting out of his throne and walking away from his guest.
“As much as I’ve enjoyed our chat Jon…”
“Robb if you disapparate I will…” Jon started, but Robb had disappeared in a puff of smoke before he could hear the rest.
He had arrived in his bedroom, deciding to take a bath after a long day of judging and being judged by his own family.
As he disrobed he saw his reflection in the mirror. He had not changed much, scars still adorned his battle worn body, his muscles hadn’t worn, his hair was still vibrant, what was Jon talking about?
But then he saw his eyes, had they always been so empty? The blue of his iris’s had seemed to dim, as though the life was draining from them.
He stepped into the boiling water, his ghostly pale skin heating instantly. He never felt warm these days; every room was cold with no light to brighten the dark corners.
“Damn him.” Robb muttered, he knew Jon was right. Perhaps a tedious visit to the upper world would do him good.
……………
He had ascended to the upper world; where exactly? He wasn’t sure, but it was dark and gloomy; not at all what Jon had in mind.
He was in a forest, the bark of the trees nearly as black as his cloak. He could not see much, the intertwined branches of the trees held on to each other so tightly that the sun could only pierce through the thinnest of cracks. The fallen leaves beneath him crunched under the weight of his feet, the sound oddly soothing to him.
Despite the familiarity of his dark surroundings, Robb found relief in breathing in the fresh air. He took deep breaths to fill his lungs; it felt like life, new life, sinking in to his bones. It was only a temporary resurgence, but it would tide him over for a few more years.
He had been walking for just over an hour when he reached the end of the forest. He looked up to see a field of lavender, the sun setting to rest upon the tip of each bud. It was a beautiful sight, but the laughter that followed was more beautiful still.
It shocked him at first, knowing that he was not alone as he had intended to be, but the sound seemed to intrigue him, and he searched for the person it came from.
He stepped a little closer to the edge, where the dark forest ended and the field of lavender began, but he dared not step further; he found comfort in his darkness, and he didn’t want to frighten whatever lurked within the grass.
As he leaned over he saw a goddess. Robb had been to the central kingdom, he had met with many goddesses, all beautiful and alluring, but none had made his heart beat quite as quickly as it did in that very moment.
She was enchanting; her hair, like spun gold, curved around each blade of grass, the smell of the lavender soaking in to every strand. Her skin was sun kissed; a dusting of freckles, almost unnoticeable to the naked eye, had the honour to rest upon the bridge of her nose. Her lips put the lavender’s beauty to shame, every smile or delicate pout stole away their attention. She was almost childlike in the way she giggled at a butterfly resting upon her knee, but her body betrayed such innocence. She was a woman, each curve told Robb as much; the dip of her back lifted her breasts higher and the thin dress she wore barely covered her smooth legs that bent ever so daintily.
But the most taunting aspect of this vision was her eyes. They were the purest green Robb had ever seen. Usually he saw bodies turn green with death and decay, but these eyes were so full of life and wonderment. They spoke of promises to see only in beauty.
Robb suddenly felt nauseous, he had to leave. He turned quickly in an attempt to rid himself of such perfection, but the snap of a twig under his foot betrayed him.
“Hello?” The siren called out to him.
Robb sunk back into the trees, the darkness shrouding his body.
She stood up and walked slowly to the edge of the field. Her eyes searched longingly for something, but she did not know what. Robb knew she couldn’t see him, but he still felt nervous.
She sunk back down and sat in front of the forest.
“Please come back, I can’t go any further…” she whispered the last part so sadly that Robb had to speak.
“Why not?” He said before his common sense could stop him.
She jumped momentarily, but her smile convinced him that she was happy to have company. She sat on her knees, her body language exuding enthusiasm.
“My mother only lets me go this far, she says there are too many dangers out there.”
“She may have a point.” Robb told her, but he hated to admit it.
“What kind of danger?” She asked so innocently.
“A number of things, you could get lost, there are wild animals, murderers, thieves….me.” He said, and his heart seemed to weigh heavier on his chest.
There was a brief period of silence and Robb had wondered if she had ran away, but her wind chime voice silenced his worries.
“Shouldn’t I be the judge of that?” She said.
He was about to answer when the sound of bells ringing broke whatever trance he was under.
“I have to go.” She said sadly, “Will you come visit again?”
“You want me to?”
“Very much so.” She said with a smile.
“Why?” He asked, his curiosity getting the better of him.
“I have yet to decide if you are a danger or not.”
Robb chuckled at that. “Then yes, I’ll visit again, but only if you tell me your name.”
She giggled, “It’s Myrcella.” She said and left as the bells chimed a second time, demanding her presence.
“Oh sweet Myrcella, I can only ever be a danger.” Robb spoke sadly as he watched her run through the field of lavender.
……………..
“My love?” Jon yelled as he walked up the stairs to his chamber.
“In here.” She called.
He opened the door to find her looking through the halls portal; it looked like a simple mirror, but his wife could see anyone she desired through it.
“Spying again?” He joked.
Sansa turned to him, a raised eyebrow suggesting he mind his own business. “I see you spoke to Robb.”
Jon sighed and sat on the end of the bed, “A wasted visit it seems, he has no desire to listen to my advice.”
Sansa came up behind him to hug his shoulders. “You may have been more persuasive than you realise my love.” She said kissing his cheek.
“Meaning?”
“Meaning, I think my brother will be visiting the upper world more often.”

“How are you holding up Talcott?” Angel whispers, trying to ignore pain in her arm and leg.
“Are you sure this okay Ang?” Talcott asks trying not to chock Angel,
“It’s fine. Iris keep up!” Angel barks adjusting Talcott.
“Coming.” Iris squeaks sticking close to the older girl’s side. Angel took in a sharp breath and stopped, “Angel?”
“Need a quick breather is all.” As she slides Talcott off her back and onto the ground, Angel legs buckled and she feel to the ground.
“ANG!”
“Shh.” She hisses. Both shut up and stood there. Angel sat there for a moment, maybe a little longer and started to think how this mess happened. It all began in the evening, she had just got done with her break and was going to report to the signing room, she didn’t have much time to leave her bag somewhere save, so she took it with her. By early evening the Empire arrived and were ready to sign the peace tragedy. And then all hell broke loose.
MT, daemons and the like attacked the room. Angel was quick kill a few of the MT, but didn’t see one behind her. Thankfully Cor did. Cor ordered her to leave, and get out of the city. As much as she didn’t want to she had, Cor left no room to fight. She found Iris, Talcott and Talcott grandfather Jared easily enough. Somehow the four of them were split up by the Mt and demons, Angel told Jared to meet them at Hammerhead. With a lot of luck, he heard her, what wasn’t luckily was Angel getting hurt by a goblin. She had five deep slashes on her right arm and left leg. And yet she still carried Talcott out of the city, and about less than half way to Hammerhead.
Angel let out a hiss as she bound her arm and leg with her jacket sleeves.
“All right let’s go.” As she stood adjust her bag strap and starting to walk off.
“Do you think my grandfather is all right?” Talcott whispers catching up to Angel.
“What about Gladdy?” Iris asks fear clear as day in her voice. Angel let out a sigh, these kids just lost everything in a few short hours. This wasn’t going to be easy on anyone.
“Knowing your grandfather and your brother there both fine. I beat you anything that Jared is waiting for us at Hammerhead. And from there we can go right to Lestallum.” She smiles.
“We just need to stay positive, right?” Iris asks smiling back.
“Right.” Angel says with a smile and snapping her fingers. The trio walked a bite longer, coming to the half way point when Iris saw something, it looked like a small group of goblins. They were trying to fight something. Without much of a second though Angel killed each goblin with her dagger and picked up a puppy?
The puppy had domed forehead, a long square-cut muzzle with strong jaws and a black nose. The eyes were medium-sized and brown, the ears are large and stand erect. It had a long neck, and a bushy tail that looked like a hook. And around its neck was lavender colored ribbon and small cut on its left front leg.
“Is that a puppy?” Both kids ask watching Angel look it over.
“Best guess she is a Tenebrae Shepard, rare to find them out here.” As handed the little pup to Iris. Not a word was said as they kept walking, finally coming to Hammerhead, Cindy and Cid were waiting for them. Angel took the puppy from Iris and handed it to Cid, who took one look at her and knew she needed a bath. Cindy told the kids they could wait in the dinner while she helped Angel.
“So, who’s the kids?” The blonde asks soaking some bandages in potion. Angel let out a hiss as the bandages hit her arm
“Iris and Talcott. Iris brother is Noct shield might have seen him yesterday he was the one without a shirt, and don’t say you weren’t staring. And Talcott grandfather serves Iris family.” She explains through clenched teeth.
“Sorry hon.” She apologizes applying the second set onto her leg.
“What’s the plan?” Cid asks drying off the unhappy puppy. Who looked ready to kill.
“Wait for Jared, head to Lestallum, wait for Noctis and the others to show up.” She explains. Cid let out humph as he set the puppy free and watched as she started to chase her tail.
“How the hell do you know Jared is going to show up?”
“Seeing as that is his truck pulling in, then pretty good.” She smirks standing and grabbing her change of clothes Cid mumbled something as he walked out.
Angel headed to back and changed into a white t-shirt with a black vest with a pair of white wings on the back, white and black checker bandana tied around her head. A pair of brown leather pants with heeled boots and a red belt with a silver skull belt buckle. A pair of sunglasses.
“Can I ask a favor?” She asks Cindy who was putting the ribbon back on the puppy.
“Depends.”
“When the guys show up, and before you ask I know they will. Can you give them lavender there?”
“It’s that her name now?” Cindy coos at the puppy who gave her a lick to the face.
“Seem fitting.” There was pause, as lavender barking filled the air.
“Lestallum.”
“Lestallum.”
“Is it safe?”
“What other choice do we have?” Angel asks Cindy playing with her hair, “We can’t sit here and wait for six only knows what. And I can’t and won’t put both you and Cid in danger.”
“I know, but something just feels off.”
“Nothing off about it, we need to go and if we leave now we’ll be fine.”
“Just be careful okay? I don’t want to hear how you were killed.” Angel let out a bark of laughter.
“Oh, Cin no worries.” She winks leaving. Talcott and Iris were in the back sleeping and Jared was in the passenger side.
“I take it I’m driving to Lestallum.”
“If you do not mind.”
“None at all.”
“Then let us be off.” Angel gave a silent nod as she started the truck it was going to be a long of driving.

In the end, it was too late and Valerie tinkled her pants and was escorted to the principle’s office where she awaited her father’s arrival with a fresh pair of pants. favorite family member: Her father. a story about that family member: When she was young, Charles would read a story to her every night. Sometimes he followed a book and other times he made one up with Valerie assisting him - the latter were her favorite.
what they prefer:
coffee or tea? Tea. showering in the day or night? Day. She likes to start the day off being cleansed by water. taking baths or taking showers? Taking baths. Soaking in a bath with flower petals, candles burning and essential oils is something of a ritual for her. tv or movies? Movies. She does not really watch any television. Although, she did enjoy her fair share of cartoons. writing or reading? Reading (although she does love to write). A project not many know about her is that she plans on publishing her own novel some day, which is in part why she reads more than she normally would. platonic or romantic love? Probably a little bit of both. She values friendship more than anything but she is also a hopeless romantic. She’s in love with love and enjoys watching other people finding that for themselves. While she believes she will probably never find such a romantic tale for herself, she very much likes to witness it and to see other people happy due to that rare and powerful magic. iced tea or lemonade? Iced Tea. Earl Grey with a splash of lemon juice and lightly sweetened with date sugar simple syrup, to be exact. She also enjoys a good Lavender lemonade (bonus points if combined with Earl Grey). ice cream or smoothies? Smoothies. While she does love ice cream it is often difficult for her to find a brand that carries non-dairy. She has a smoothie at least two times a week. cupcakes or cake? Cupcakes. They’re smaller and she can enjoy as much as she can take, nobody is watching after all. beach or mountains? Mountains. There is nothing quite like getting lost in the woods. The smell, the breeze, the sounds of birds and lurking pixies...it’s all welcoming to her.
favorites:
song: La Vie En Rose by Louis Armstrong. band: Abba. outfit: A flowy skirt with a loose short-sleeved blouse and a pair of cute flats. place: Her and Charlie’s Secret Garden. memory: When she adopted Iris and Athena. person: Eleanor Roosevelt (historical), Audrey Hepburn (celebrity), Charles Sage (someone she knows). movie: Roman Holiday. show: She doesn’t watch any current television but she did (and probably always will) love Sabrina the Teenage Witch.
