Also to info dump some, in the third set of hands, Wukong is holding a skullcap filled with brains and a knife. This is to reference Buddhist protection deities, which are depicted cutting up the brains as a symbol for destroying ignorance

for the DTIYS by @lavaflowe!! it was such an awesome concept, I just had to get a bit daring with the perspective :D had to get some photobashing going close to the end though but it worked out well!

I exchanged the skullcap bowl for a gourd, since Wukong is often represented in religious statues as holding one or an immortal peach. The headdress was inspired by Beijing opera, but the mirror was borrowed from Lion Dance costumes. The mirror on their heads is meant to repel bad energies. The tiger pelt kilt is a classic of course, and a symbol of a protective deity. The long draping tail and staff supporting the heaven was my way of giving an awing sense of scale and of his reach. The symbols in the sky is the Chinese star map. And it's hard to tell, but the mountains in the distance are the other three Continents in the JTTW cosmology.

So I would say that my current definite favorite JTTW artist would be Dongzi Liu, who's created some phenomenal Xiyouji-based pieces. Here's a small sampling that I yoinked off of his twitter:

Another artist I very much like is Chen Huiguan, who's created some really endearing presentations of the pilgrimage. Irwen Wong has a really good collection of them as part of his extremely helpful summary of Journey to the West. Here's a small sampling of the work:

Those are the professional artists that come to mind, but if you're interested in something a little "closer to home" as it were (i.e. hobby artists on tumblr), then I'd say that the best JTTW artists would be @antidotefortheawkward-art, @archrui, @lavaflowe, @sixteenthchapel, @kaijufluffs, and @sunny-days-and-warm-mournings

These are the artists that first come to mind, and as you can see there's some really amazing styles present! I hope you enjoy all this art as much as I do, and it goes without saying that everyone should feel free to reblog with their own favorite JTTW-inspired artists.

I'm not the best with words but @lavaflowe made a great point that I also wanted to build on. When white people make Sun Wukong or any asian character buff, I give them a hard side eye. Its this attitude that the only way they can be masculine or badass is to be buff. To be masculine by a very western standard. Like they can't be badass or worthy of desire or admiration without looking like Rambo or Arnold Schwarzenegger.

I've seen this in every fandom that had asian characters with white fans. If the character was designated as a twink they'd be made a bottom or pathetic. If the character was badass any perceived femininity would be stripped from them.

Sun Wukong is short, he is small. And he is badass because of that. he is not buff. Making him so you're saying he is inadequate as himself. What message do you think that sends to asian fans!? What it says about what you think of our cultures!?

Honestly the paragraphs are much appreciated, I haven’t finished the book and OSP’s video is unfortunately only a summary without the filler, so I learn by being given context from others lol

But!! I think the Red-buttock Horse monkey is speculated to have made an appearance early on in the story, setting wukongs quest for immortality in motion

The newest osp episode made me realize something.

He’s sad here because he’s lamenting about how he doesn’t really fit in anywhere, because he thinks he’s one of a kind.

And then is promptly proven otherwise as an identical antagonist pops up and is revealed to be one of the three other monkeys that is like Sun Wukong.

And then he kills it

I could be biased by the interactions of Macaque and Wukong in later iterations but

This was such a good opportunity for him to learn about himself :,(

in the Expedition AU, half of their journey includes the trek back to the Tang dynasty. Wujing and Wuneng return to Heaven for their appointments, Ao Lie returns home with much merit.

Tripitaka however, is given the treatment of a hero and a celebrity much to his chagrin. It's so bad he can't even leave his home. He dies sick and isolated, but not alone. Wukong stays, often disguised as a bird on his window or a fat cat lounging in his study, especially when he has visitors.

He has his own appointment of course. People pray to him now, call for deliverance and strength, for help in exorcising demons and protecting their youth. And he answers readily, of course, how could he not? His family needs him as well, and he's at their side and so happy to be there.

But he's a Buddha now. Distances mean nothing, they are all an illusion. He can be anywhere he wants, as many wheres he needs, in fact. And beyond his family, his devotees, his duties, his master also needs him. His remaining years are but a blink of an eye to him, not only as an enlightened being but just as a spirit. He's lived well past a millennium, what's a handful of decades to him? He can wait.

So he lingers, keeps him company, reassures him of his final trials in this life, and when he drifts from his body, he's the first one to congratulate him on his ascension. And disciple and master go to the pure lands to greet the others, their merry band of pilgrims together again.

He was sick of getting captured so he got buff, but since demons are super naturally strong this changes nothing story-wise. He still cant defend himself, he just looks like a himbo now
