Something I greatly appreciate in Hazbin Hotel is how western facist and imperialist coded the angels are.

You have Heaven, a place only for “good” people and are conventionally seen as “the good guys”. These “good guys” regularly launch attacks with significantly stronger weaponry on Hell, a place conventionally seen as “the bad guys”. But there are countless parts in the show where we see the angels and demons not being all that different. There are probably several posts of how Hazbin characters in Hell (and some Helluva Boss characters) mirror those in Heaven, so I won’t get too much into it here. But when you boil down to it, the biggest differences between Heaven and Hell are each place’s living conditions, and how they are typically viewed.

Next you have the Exorcists, a reflection of the military. Adam, patriarchal misogynist who leads the Extermination, and feels comfortable enough to say that he finds the carnage fun. Then we have Lute’s zealous faith in Heaven always being right and her unfettered disgust towards anyone in Hell. We find all of these traits in imperialism and facism: the dehumanization of an entire country’s worth of people to the point where killing them off is seen not just necessary, but entertaining, and the delusional righteousness in the impeccability of the facist state.

Not to mention the hypocrisy of killing a thousand of “the enemy” is something to laugh about and celebrate, but the minute one of your own gets killed? By the so-called “enemy”? Even if it’s in self-defense? Suddenly it’s a serious problem that has to be met with swift action.

And when you have the audacity to not want to commit these acts of violence anymore, like Vaggie? You’re discarded as a traitor to your country and your people, and lumped in with “the enemy”.

And Sera, like politicians feigning compassion, claim “I made this decision with a heavy heart”, and “there was no other option”. But that doesn’t change that she’s the one who gave the green light to all of this. As a friend of mine and fellow hazbin fan said, the Extermination is state-sanctioned abuse.

And finally, we have Emily, who never knew any world other than Heaven, and who’s only knowledge of Hell came from sources from Heaven. She was the only one who genuinely wanted to hear Charlie and Vaggie out, who actually questioned why Angel Dust couldn’t be redeemed if he fit all of Adam’s criteria for getting into Heaven. And when she learned of the Extermination’s existence, she joined Charlie in calling out the Angels on their bullshit. Emily’s actions in episode 6 reiterate that this is not a “complex” issue, but one of basic compassion and decency.

Also I wanna note the look on Adam and Lute’s faces when Charlie and Emily sing “if angels can do whatever and remain in the sky.” They’re fucking angry. Because is there anything more infuriating to a facist than getting called out on their hypocrisy and double standard?

Earlier this month, the University of Southern California announced that Asna Tabassum would be the Class of 2024′s valedictorian, with a 3.98 GPA and in recognition of her community service and leadership skills. She is graduating with a major in biomedical engineering and a minor in resistance to genocide.
But on Monday, USC canceled the speech. In an announcement dated Monday, Provost Andrew Guzman said the “intensity of feelings, fueled by both social media and the ongoing conflict in the Middle East” has “created substantial risks relating to security and disruption at commencement.” “After careful consideration, we have decided that our student valedictorian will not deliver a speech at commencement. While this is disappointing, tradition must give way to safety,” he wrote. “This decision has nothing to do with freedom of speech. There is no free-speech entitlement to speak at a commencement. The issue here is how best to maintain campus security and safety, period.” The school did not elaborate further. Reached for comment, the provost’s office directed HuffPost to Guzman’s statement.
Tabassum, in an interview with HuffPost, questioned the university’s reasoning and told HuffPost she felt disappointed and let down by USC. “I am surprised that my own university – my home for four years – has abandoned me,” she said. In a statement published on Monday, Tabassum said that she was not aware of any specific threats against her or the university, and that during a meeting last Sunday, administrators told her that “the University had the resources to take appropriate safety measures for my valedictory speech, but that they would not be doing so since increased security protections is not what the University wants to ’present as an image.’” “Security and safety is also my concern. That’s consistent with my commitment to human equality and human rights. I don’t think that they’re mutually exclusive at all,” Tabassum told HuffPost. In the last few months, schools have dealt with rising cases of antisemitism and Islamophobia, the deactivation of student-activist groups, suspension of staff, cases of doxxing and harassment and even reports of physical violence. This week, Columbia University’s president is set to testify at a congressional hearing about campus safety, four months after a similar hearing resulted in the resignation of two Ivy League presidents. And the Department of Education launched a series of investigations last November into several universities where students have reported antisemitic or Islamophobic incidents. Tabassum said she was denied a chance to let others see someone like her give a high-profile speech ― a South Asian hijab-wearing Muslim, someone “representative of communities and of the masses of people who never saw the institution made for them,” she told HuffPost. “I wanted to offer the hope that ... we can succeed [at] institutions like USC.”

"The undeniable economic successes achieved by the USSR, especially in the industrial field (from the five year plans onward), the Red Army's victory over Hitlerism, the rapidity with which economic reconstruction was carried out after the war, the improvement in the Soviet people's standard of living, the help rendered by the government of the USSR to socialist China, all seemed, moreover, to confirm the appreciations and forecasts I have mentioned, even though the social inequalities that developed during the first five year plans were tending not to diminish but rather to intensify.
    The Twentieth Congress of the Soviet Communist Party, although it offered no analysis of the difficulties and contradictions that had led to the acts of repression committed indiscriminately and on a large scale during the preceding years, but confined itself to substituting for such an analysis personal accusations against Stalin (who was made solely "responsible" for the "negative" aspects of the past period), seemed to confirm that the Soviet Union, having reached a certain level of economic development, was now about to enter upon a phase of greater socialist democracy, thus opening up vast opportunities for working-class initiative. This congress seemed to show, too, that the party had retained -- or rather, had recovered -- the capacity for self-criticism that was essential if errors were to be rectified.[4]
    Actually this was not at all the case. The contradictory reality of Soviet history and Soviet society was not subject to the least analysis. The aspects of reality which needed to be condemned and transformed were not explained in relation to the inner contradictions of the Soviet Union. They were presented as being "perversions" due to the actions of a certain "personality," namely, Stalin. The acceptance by the Soviet Communist Party of such a pseudoexplanation testified to its abandonment of Marxism as a tool of analysis. This made the party incapable of helping to transform the social relations that had given rise to that which was being condemned in words. The pseudoexplanation given thus fulfilled its task of consolidating the class relations which concentrated economic and political power in the hands of a minority, so that the contradictions engendered by these class relations, far from diminishing, were actually deepened.
    Among many other consequences, this deepening of the social contradictions resulted in a worsening of the conditions in which the USSR's economy functioned. The same thing happened in those countries linked with the USSR whose leaders followed the same political line. Instead of an attack being launched on the social contradictions themselves, "economic reforms" were introduced which were attempts to make the economic system "work better" by increasing the powers of factory managers and giving ever-greater scope to capitalist forms and criteria of economic management.
    Contrary to the hopes of the leaders of the Soviet Union and the "fraternal countries," the various "reforms" have not radically solved any of the difficulties with which these leaders are faced. To be sure, momentary successes have been obtained in limited fields, but failures predominate: there is greater dependence on foreign techniques, increased foreign indebtedness, a marked reduction in the rate of industrial growth, and difficulties in the field of food supplies. Signs of discontent on the part of the working people with their situation and with the impact of the "economic reforms," become more and more apparent."

Last year we applied for an intermediate rental housing scheme that basically means you pay under market rent from a housing association; the development is local and it would allow us to save, and we were eligible. This was supposed to ‘launch’ in September last year so would have meant we could move out of the last place and not have the shitty landlord put us through court and facing homelessness, but has been delayed this whole time. We moved in here which was better than being homeless but doesn’t really allow us to save and we don’t want to be here really long term.
Last week the person dealing with it at the management co (who have been catastrophically incompetent in their handling of it) reviewed our financial paperwork that we submitted early T his year and claimed we were over the salary threshold - we had to basically tell them how to interpret this because S is freelance. Even though they are supposedly financial/housing experts. So she has said she’d re-review but we’ve not heard from her since last week.
And now we wait. Although we are eligible, we have no idea what the other parameters are beyond the basic eligibility criteria and they are the furthest from transparent because they see us as mere plebs. No timeframe because they won’t commit to one at this point. Getting this would be pretty much a game changer for us, there’s so much at stake. And we’re unsure what our options are if we don’t, but none are great tbh. It feels almost too good to be true and my brain is wired to expect the worst because brain remembers everything and my narrative is that things don’t work out for me. Housing instability is so fucking hard because what can you really do if you don’t have a secure place to live? How can you plan for anything?

All F1 teams achieve FIA Three-Star Environmental Accreditation By Balazs Szabo on 22 Jun 2023, 16:18 Formula One's governing body, the FIA have announced that all F1 teams have achieved theFIA Three-Star Environmental Accreditation, the highest level of environmental sustainability recognition from the sport’s governing body. The FIA Environmental Accreditation Programme was launched in 2011 to help the motorsport industry to assess and enhance their environmental performance. It measures performance across a range of 17 criteria ranging from energy use and supply chain management; to transport planning, noise management and carbon emissions. To maintain impartiality in the auditing process for the Accreditation, the audits are carried out by an independent qualified auditor. The FIA Formula One World ChampionshipTM was first awarded the accreditation in 2020 and since then many of the key stakeholders within the sport, including the Teams, Race Promoters and host circuits, have also embarked on their own journeys to achieve FIA Three-Star Environmental Accreditation. Alongside the ten F1 Teams, Pirelli, a Global Partner of Formula 1 and key supplier of the World Championship, also holds the Three-Star Environmental Accreditation. Several Race Promoters and host circuits have achieved the highest level of accreditation, including events in Italy, Spain, Belgium, Austria, and the UAE, with the UK, Japan, and Singapore also all currently possessing the Accreditation at some level. Formula One's President Stefano Domenicali said: “To have our whole Championship, as well as many of our partners and promoters, achieve this milestone is a significant moment and one which demonstrates the ongoing commitment from the whole F1 community to change to reach our sustainability goals.
