Sexual Harassment and Abuse are never the fault of the survivor

Sexual Harassment.
"Shut up! Those things are not said; they're going to talk about us, after awhile no man is going to want to marry you, besides you sure provoked him…”
It was the words I heard when I tried to tell my family that someone was telling me obscene words and touching my body; I was around 13 years old.
Unfortunately, cases like mine and worse are happening every day and it seems that nobody cares to end this crime, it is unbelievable that society and politicians do nothing to finally to end this.
For the past six years, I have worked with Latina women who have shared their stories, several of them with a history of abuse and sexual harassment by their own parents, siblings, grandparents or other close relatives.
A story that moved me to the soul was that of a woman who was raped since she was 6 years old by her own father, at age 12 she was pregnant by her uncle, and her mother had her abort by hitting her; she blamed her for "provoking" her uncle.
At 14 she gave birth to her first daughter, who repeated the same pattern of abuse and rape as her mother; her stepfather raped her at age 7.
Neither of them was guilty of anything, neither of them sought to be hurt, the real culprits are machismo, the oppression of religions and politicians who do nothing to educate people and empower women.
Instead of creating fear with this story, we should become aware of what we are doing to end this situation, how we can educate our children so that they never become abusers or victims.
Every time we report any type of abuse, every time we give the courage and respect our children deserve, we are doing something to end sexual harassment.
DECLARE, THE VICTIM WILL NEVER BE GUILTY!
