Elke Sommer's ride from German ingénue to Hollywood icon could've been a movie in itself
Spotted by the legendary Vittorio De Sica while vacationing in Italy in the late '50s, Elke brought a mix of jaw-dropping looks and unpolished charm that made European filmmakers take note immediately. Her early films wasted no time in showcasing her range, and she was quickly branded a rising star
By the '60s, Hollywood had her number. Elke made a seamless jump to American cinema, going toe-to-toe with heavyweights like Paul Newman, Peter Sellers, and Dean Martin. With her sly comedic timing and sultry magnetism, she lit up films like A Shot in the Dark, The Prize, and The Wrecking Crew. Defining '60s European glam, she became one of the few German actresses to conquer both European and American screens
She didn't stop at movies, either. Throughout the '70s and '80s, Elke was a regular on TV, her lively wit making her a talk-show favorite. By the '90s, she swapped out the screen for the canvas, pursuing her love for painting and adding yet another facet to her artistic career
On the personal side? Two American husbands and a home base in L.A., where she's still rooted. Today, on her 84th birthday, we raise a toast to Elke-Deadlier Than The Male!
Photos by Angelo Frontoni, drawn from a mix of his '60s sessions. The last shot-the most famous-stars another femme fatale, Sylva Koscina, in Deadlier Than the Male, Ralph Thomas's 1967 British crime and mystery film.
