Last Spring, I transformed several yards of '60s fluorescent floral cotton chiffon into this frilly babydoll dream dress, heavily inspired by Barbie's Flower Wower look from 1970. 馃尲馃┓
I say "inspired" because I didn't exactly set out to make a replica of the Flower Wower dress, I just wanted to create something that embodied the spirit of Barbie from that era. I used vintage Butterick 5736 from 1969 as my design base and then made a few alterations to fit my vision for the final look. These alterations including making the long sleeves bell-shaped, adding rows of shirring to the upper arm, scooping the neckline (the original pattern has a very high neck), and creating a detachable fabric rosette for the empire waistline. 馃У馃巰

It really highlights how deeply unserious, superficial, and functionally random the populist conservative bit is for Trump (the alternative explanation is being surrounded by enough real conservatives to tame his populist impulses, but I think Trump actually learned his lesson on that even by the end of his first term) that his idea of boosting American manufacturing involves just placing tariffs on basically everything Americans purchase day to day when the vast majority of Americans cannot afford the American made alternatives where they even exist. Perhaps a shift at McDonald's didn't teach him this, but it is obvious to me that the manufacturing capacity of the country itself is a fraction of what it once was- it's not that American goods are just being outcompeted in the global market AND in the domestic market, they often just don't exist at all, or are too expensive for most American consumers to consider purchasing (which they largely have to be, in order to support anything like a living wage for the workers who produce those goods because the person making your T shirt has to eat food).
If the end goal was actually just to make more stuff here, we could just pay people to manufacture here via financial incentives- carrots such as nearly free money. This would still not solve the math problem of the cost of making goods here, but it would mean more factories and workshops making shirts and boots and plates and such, and it would mean employment in those jobs. He could tax an incredibly small population of unimaginably wealthy people to fund it and even call it an "elites tax" if he wanted. He could run it through Congress and brag that it was bipartisan whether it needs to be (due to the makeup of the House) or not. And he could actually inject money, meaningfully and directly, into American manufacturing and its growth. And I genuinely think that would be great- even if it wouldn't solve high prices, it would mean new jobs and it's possible that prices could come down a bit on products if they became more widely purchased generally, and there are enough people interested and able to purchase American made to, I would guess, sustain real growth for those manufacturers.
But that would mean that Elon Musk and literally just 800 other people would be given a new tax burden, and we can't have that because it would squash innovation. Offshoring was an innovation, once. We just ended one of the longest periods of basically free money for them in my lifetime and have seen how much good that does for working people- none.
So no, instead let's give even more tax cuts to the corporations that intentionally decimated America's manufacturing capabilities so that they could pay almost nothing for labor and have almost no accountability for workplace conditions offshore. Thanks for offshoring the work that sustained whole communities and never got replaced in many places- here are some juicy tax cuts for you in return. It's actually a joke.

After admiring all the lovely quilts I've been lucky enough to order from @anotherdayforchaosfay, I remembered that I had made this waaay back in high school. Took some digging, but I found it folded on a hanger in one of my closets.
It's not the best, being the first (and only) quilt that I've ever made. If you get close to it, points dont match and the quilting is wonky. But I'm still proud of it. I took the class bc I knew knowing the basics of how to sew and how to operate a sewing machine are important skills, even if I don't apply it in my everyday life.

Here are a few pics I took back in February of the colorful look I wore for Valentine's. 馃寛馃┓ I made the dress myself using a vintage pattern and vintage-inspired print fabric from Spoonflower. 馃尲
The pattern itself was a nice and straightforward sew, so if you're into casual '60s styles I definitely recommend it! It's the perfect simple a-line style for showcasing a fun graphic fabric print and with the addition of oversized pockets and a chunky metal o-ring zipper down the front you can get a pretty authentic mid-late '60s look without much effort!
My version of the dress deviates slightly from the pattern as I opted to make single welt pockets rather than large patch pockets. This design choice was mainly out of necessity as I was short on fabric yardage and didn't have enough for much else aside from the main body of the dress. Luckily I was able to utilize the generous plain white selvage edges that were provided on the fabric to create the pocket welts and contrasting stand collar.
I'm currently in the process of putting together a good old fashioned BLOG (what a throwback, right?) where I'll get more into technical detail about my sewing projects, including this one. So if that's something you're interested in watch this space for updates! I'm hoping to have it launched by the summer. 馃馃槉

i finally finished my masc Dodo cosplay from Celestial Toymaker! (only diffrence was that i made it in pants form and not a dress hehe)
those circles took me so long lol, but i am super happy with this coplay of my fave girl! Dodo to me is very queer, embodying the rebelios teenager spirit with non binery energy that defines how scoiety sees her!! so i wanted to experiment with a more maculine look for this iconic dress.
Dodo already wore a knight's regelia in The Ark, which proves she can wear stuff that is gender defying already! so its nice to contiue the trend. i am filled with non binery dodo thoughts at all times
(featuring my new crutch who helped me take the poses!)
more details under the cut! (apologies for the bad quality of the first pic haha

All the quilt blocks are sewn, and now I just need to square them up before I start sewing them together! I normally wouldn鈥檛 take a photo at this stage, but I wanted to see if the scrap blocks blended in well with the pattern blocks, and I think I can confidently say they do lol

"Toy's"
Red hand powered ca. 1960-1969 made in the USSR
White "Regina" ca. 1965 made in Berlin the US zone (Battery powered)
Green "Zig-Zag" ca. 1940 made in Japan (Battery powered)
Almost the same time period and yet they are al zo different. And they ended up in my small town.
