The Last Samurai (2003)
Sometimes, the minimalist choice is the best one. For instance, in his movie The Last Samurai, Edward Zwick reduces Cpt Nathan Algren’s combination of PTSD, guilt, and alcohol withdrawals to the poetic stroke of Tom Cruise bellowing “SAKEEEEEEE!” in an empty room. This is the daddest of dad movies, after all: all reserved nods, sweeping battles, and emotional yet manly moments that somehow manage to bring a tear to your eye through a combination of the runtime wearing you down and the two or three beers you’ve had by that point. It’s all very boilerplate material, a man coming to find a new reason to live and to fight, but something of the sort you’d absolutely be coerced into watching the next time you’re visiting the folks and there’s a slow Saturday evening. It certainly helps that Tom Cruise gives his usual fervor to the Algren role, feverishly committing to his beleaguered captain who “goes native” and finds fresh resolve and purpose. Ken Watanabe is a good counter to him, reserved and zealous in his drive in equal measure. Perhaps the most layered performance, if we’re grading on a curve, comes from Koyuki’s turn as Taka. The widow of a man killed in battle by Algren, she is forced to play his host while he is convalescing and a prisoner of Katsumoto. She balances her inner conflicts well, a woman struggling with her growing affection for this man who killed the one she loved, unsure how she feels about his attachments to her children, wondering if it’s wrong to move past her husband, especially with his killer. But again, subtlety isn’t what we’re here for. We want guns going boom and Katsumoto weeping as he spots a perfect cherry blossom tree in his dying moments.

Who was the last Samurai
It often happens that when we think of the last samurai, we come to the image of Tom Cruise as the protagonist of the blockbuster film that bears that name. Although it is an entertaining and dramatic movie, it is not very faithful to the story.
The last samurai, historically, was Saigo Takamori . He was an intellectual, politician, and leader of the Satsuma Han, in present-day Kagoshima Prefecture, during the late Edo period and early Meiji period.
During this time, Japan was forced to open its doors to trade and foreign influence by the Western imperial powers, with which it signed commercial and legal treaties that harmed Japanese society. Many were very dissatisfied with these agreements and the abuses they received from citizens of these Western powers.
The government was led by the Shogun, Tokugawa , who was losing much of his popularity due to such treaties and other controversial decisions. Saigo Takamori was openly against the decisions of the government and had the support of his community, so after several incidents, battles and alliances, they overthrew the Shogunate government and established a new form of government with the Meiji Emperor at the head.

"Tell me how he died."
"I'm going to tell you how he lived."
Okay now I'm crying D: I finally watched The Last Samurai for the first time today and I loved everything about it.
Except for the stupid stupid romance.
#and except for the romanticisation of samurai but at least that made a good story#I also would have loved a title drop about Katsumoto#just to make sure that everyone gets that katsumoto was the last samurai and not the american captain#because people do be stupid#last samurai

Katsumoto...
Ken Watanabe as Katsumoto, The Last Samurai (2003). Fun movie. They got their historical facts dead wrong, but a really fun period piece of you're into the samurai thing.
