Al via il progetto italiano Iris, preparerà il successore di Lhc. Guidato da Infn, lavorerà anche sul risparmio energetico. È partito il progetto italiano Iris, tra i vincitori del bando Pnrr per le Infrastrutture di Ricerca, che svilupperà tecnologie per gli acceleratori di particelle di prossima generazione: in particolare per il Future Circular Collider (Fcc), il grande collisore di particelle proposto per sostituire Lhc al Cern di Ginevra.

Il progetto, guidato dall’Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare (Infn), sarà composto da un’infrastruttura distribuita su tutto il territorio e verrà finanziato con 60 milioni di euro, oltre il 50% dei quali destinato al Sud. Una delle tappe principali del progetto sarà la realizzazione, a Salerno, di un futuro centro di eccellenza per lo sviluppo della promettente tecnologia della cosiddetta superconduttività ‘calda’: questa tecnologia è in grado di lavorare a temperature di -200 gradi, meno difficili e costose da ottenere rispetto a quelle oggi impiegate nella superconduttività ‘fredda’ (-270 gradi). “Con il progetto Iris l'Italia assume una posizione di primo piano in Europa e nel mondo nel campo della superconduttività”, dice Lucio Rossi, docente all’Università di Milano associato Infn e coordinatore tecnico del progetto. “Iris è un esempio virtuoso di come la ricerca di base possa fornire un importante sbocco applicativo in altri ambiti – aggiunge Pierluigi Campana dell’Infn, coordinatore scientifico del progetto – come quello dello sviluppo di nuovi materiali per il risparmio energetico”. L’Infn parteciperà al progetto attraverso le sezioni di Genova, di Salerno, i Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati e il Laboratorio Acceleratori e Superconduttività Applicata (Lasa) di Milano, che sarà il coordinatore. Molti i partner che affiancheranno l’Infn: le Università di Genova, Milano, Napoli, del Salento e di Salerno, e l’Istituto superconduttori, materiali innovativi e dispositivi del Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (Cnr-Spin).
