WHAT'S (STILL) GOING ON, #4. Sly and the Family Stone, There's a Riot Goin' On. The title is an explicit answer to Marvin Gaye's song's question "What's Going On." This is the sound of damage. The master tapes were damaged. Sly was damaged. The mix *sounds* haphazard and damaged. Holding it all together, to a casual listener, just, like, the grownup authority on the record, is bassist Larry Graham. He's making long stretches of musical experimentation into funk tracks, as voices are muffled then suddenly clear and the traditional song form starts to fray. Sly and Billy Preston toss in all kinds of great keyboard riffs at every level of the mix, there's rhythm guitar helping Larry hold it together. It just sounds like disillusionment and worry and mumbly bad news and when you find out the album is almost like a journal or document of the drug use and intra-FamilyStone rancor that surrounds it, well, that makes sense.
