In the early stages of my career I used to work with the director, Larry Fessenden and his production company @glasseyepix. Over the years, I got to illustrate a few comic adaptations of movies, do storyboards, pre-production art, and in the later stages I even worked on some special effects and I directed an audio play! Working with all the lovely people there was integral to my development as an artist and I feel very lucky to have had that opportunity. This is a crop of the cover of the comic adaptation I did of Fessenden’s movie, The Last Winter, starring Ron Perlman and James LeGros. It was actually the second cover I did. For the original cover, we didn’t want to give away the monster before you even opened the book. This is a movie that I heard about thanks to podcasts. It went on a list of movies to check out and there were buzz words that moved it up. This has a Lovecraftian vibe to it. This is an interesting movie here with a couple ways of looking at it. A social commentary route with a natural explanation or a supernatural one that involves the idea of the wendigo. Thoughts : Like Me (2017)

With the landscape of social interaction constantly changing, it only makes sense that film would follow along with that evolution, trying to adapt these changes into the medium.  Over the past half-decade or so, there have been a flurry of films focused on social media communication and how it impacts our ability to interact with one another, some on a major scale and others done very independently.  One of the recent films that got a bit of a large-scale push was the social media loner meditation Like Me.  

Kiya (Addison Timlin) is a teenage drifter in a seemingly disjointed search for interaction with others.  She spends her nights driving around and occupying random hotel rooms, always on the search for someone to pull into her social media-based black widow experiments.  Often recording her exploits, Kiya shares her adventures on line, longing for the opportunities to wallow in the admiration, hate, celebrity and scorn that comes with her infamy, including receiving direct judgement from Burt (Ian Nelson), an online presence whose opinion seems to carry major weight.  After a couple of low key exploits, Kiya assaults and kidnaps Marshall (Larry Fessenden), a motel owner who falls for her seductive trap.  Over the course of several days, Kiya holds Marshall captive and tortures him based on the feedback from the voices in the social media sphere, resulting on a journey that resembles a descent into madness.

This film is a fever dream full of vivid, fluorescent colors and ultra-jarring juxtapositions of frantic editing and solemn moments.  The slightly off-kilter experience of Kiya’s disconnect with reality is conveyed via her living, experiencing and interacting with life and those she runs into via various filters of cameras and comment sections.  Each of her acts manages to grow in terms of the ‘production value’, but simultaneously, the intimacy between Kiya and her victim grows as well.  Each progressing act seems to reach closer and closer towards performance art in elaborate set-pieces, fueled by the admiration and wrath of the comment section (eerily similar to how YouTube creators find themselves at the mercy of their following quite often).  Sadly, Kiya’s entire journey seems based in the search for someone to tell her a story... provide her with a moment of truth to connect to.   

The razor-sharp focus on the shock and instant gratification culture that exists online carries the narrative quite well, seeing that the narrative is relatively bare bones.  Kiya uses her cameras more like a weapon than the guns and bats she weilds during the film, with the camera exacting much more damage in the grand scheme.  The Burt character and the way he sits on a self-imposed high horse, espousing judgement on Kiya, her actions, and the thoughts of her followers, make his eventual reveal and downfall that much more satisfying when it plays out.  While initially setting himself up to be the 8 1/2-esque voice of critique and reason among the madness, it is quickly revealed that his posturing ultimately holds no real value, and he is just a grandiose version of the chorus of opinion.

The camerawork and editing utilized by director Robert Mockler is somehow both fresh and reminiscent of older works like Natural Born Killers.  The shifts between a cinematic look, camcorder look and camera phone look are pleasing and woven together quite well.  The balance of traditional, well-composed framing with unique, abstract and tight framing also shows the hand of a seasoned veteran or an artist with a specific vision.  The set design and production design is top-notch as well. 

Addison Timlin’s stoic demeanor is offset by her deep drive for connection, be it through intimidation, intimacy or other means, often resulting in her being both the tormentor and savior for the men she interacts with.  Ian Nelson uses his online presence to create a sense of separation between himself and those he speaks down to, as if his word carries the weight of the world with it.  Larry Fessenden and his run-down nature make him a hapless victim that the viewer can constantly feel sorrier and sorrier for as he both suffers deeper and shares deeper with Timlin’s Kiya.  Brief appearances by Jeremy Gardner and Nicole Pierini, plus a special appearance from Sylvio the gorilla, round out the memorable portions of the cast.

Like Me plays like some blended version of Nerve meets Under The Skin.  The minimalist narrative appeals to me in regards to the way it is provided, and the way it stands out visually will surely guarantee that I use this one for DJ sets in the future.
