As time passes and as the minutes and the minutes and the minutes dwindle, I’m constantly reminded at how precious and unpredictable life is when I look at you and…..I thank the Lord that you have lived long enough to see how much has changed, how much we’ve grown, how amazing your influence has been on those around you. A caretaker, a soother of sore throats and a helluva storyteller. Happy 74th birthday, Grandma and congratulations 🎉🎊🍾 🥳 “Go before you, walk beside you, stand behind you. A verdict like this was honestly a long time coming so I’m gonna save myself the trouble and just say it like it is: 𝐒𝐮𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐒𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐝 𝟐 is a MAJOR improvement over its predecessor in almost every which way…..and that is saying virtually nothing because the first film really didn’t set the bar that high to begin with, thanks to ANOTHER WB studio interference. Of course, the biased half of my brain would call this the better one of the two cause it didn’t actively piss me off but I digress.⁣ ⁣ ⁣ Once more, acting is superb. Margot Robbie continues to make Harley Quinn her own, Viola Davis is electrifying as always, Joel Kinnaman continues to follow up his surprisingly impressive acting chops from the first one, Idris Elba steals the show every scene he steps in, John Cena was admittedly better used here than F9, Daniela Melchior as Ratcatcher was definitely a runner-up for favorite character here, need I say more? ⁣⁣ ⁣ ⁣ And the characters within themselves…..ok, let me just say this: there will definitely be some characters here that you will not root for. Me personally, having some characters you can't root for is meant to be part of the point here. They’re a team of villains who are forced to go on these missions, they didn’t choose to do this and a part of why they're chosen is because how much they don't care about what they're told to do and that, for me, means more when some of the squad go against these things. ⁣ ⁣ But root against them or otherwise, Gunn does a good job in making you care about them: these characters have better contrasts between them and the synergy with one another helps them work off each other better.⁣ ⁣ ⁣ This, right here, is the full encapsulation of a director simply having fun with his craft. No cheeky backstabbing, no pulling the rug underneath him, no WB getting in the way and fucking the film over; James was allowed free range to do what he wanted to do…..at least I hope. Small and focused in execution but very grandiose and pizazz-like in presentation, the scope and the scale for etched unbridled madness made his direction all the more animated but suitable for the project. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐊𝐧𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 was probably the second most anticipated A24 film this year I was excited for after Saint Maud and this would be the first time I ever heard of this mid-14th century Arthurian mythic morality tale so of course, it perplexed me in the best of ways. I’m both familiar and unfamiliar with Gawain thanks to a certain Monty Python reference and despite being accustomed to four out of many Arthurian characters, my history is a little spotty. ⁣ ⁣ Let me just say I am thankful for that three minute ad on YouTube and even more grateful for A24 for continuing to not let me down! ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ Dev Patel is an interesting case for me because I haven’t seen him in anything since THE LAST AIRBENDER and I didn’t even know he was in that. But I put my biases aside and…..DAMN, is he one of the best parts of this movie. I’d say it’s a close contender for his best performance yet; his quiet revered magnetism probably won’t make this the most memorable iteration of the character but it is memorable and inspiring nonetheless.⁣ ⁣ Everyone else is about as impactful as him to an extent, even if their characters don’t get as much time to show their relevance to the story; then again, you will have to do some history to understand a good chunk of these characters and their significance here.⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ From an visual standpoint, the entire movie is aesthetically pleasing; looking like it upholds the true weirdness of Arthurian/medieval legend. The lush, gorgeous countryside supplies this production design with a heart-gripping exhibit of urgency in an admittedly empty landscape, also highlighting an imperfect but delicate balance between the wonders of the great outdoors and the untamed horrors it brings along with it. Take in mind the color palette as well, noting the dull, almost industrial grays and harsh lighting of the castle to luminous forests, colorful surfaces and geographical landscapes popping off the screen. A lot of Arthurian adaptations try to make these stories clean-cut, sensible and realistic but here it works far against that formula from visuals alone to its advantage. ⁣ ⁣ (Continued in comments) (at Green Chapel) https://www.instagram.com/p/CSB_hPQLczd/?utm_medium=tumblr

Often cited as one of the greatest musicals of all time, “𝐁𝐥𝐮𝐞𝐬 𝐁𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐬” represents a radical shift in the musical genre and remains such a iconic staple to the city of Chicago. Having taken a look at the sequel that unfortunately tarnished the legacy the first film set up, it only seemed fair to head back to where it all started and check if there was any such value—⁣ ⁣ Ok, enough beating around the bush. Yes, I enjoyed this. ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ With electrifying chemistry between every single one of its stars, it’s hard to really dispute any of these guys prowesses as performers, entertainers or comedians, especially since there’s a visible tongue-in-cheek appeal to its comedy that it’s follow up clearly doesn’t have, causing me to chuckle more times than I anticipated. Compared to its successor, this one seemed to have the right mix of absurdity and slapstick to their comedic timings and the performances highlight that wonderfully. ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ As a love-letter to Chicago, disguised as a road picture, the grimyness of late 70s Industrial Chicago and it's seedy underbelly become almost a character in their own right, pacing is sublime, costumes were done pretty well with tight consistent cinematography and editing throughout. ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ Not only a mixture of urban sleaze and blackheart rhythm and blues, it’s also one of the best examples of the encapsulation behind what makes, if not a good comedy, then an entertaining one. I do agree that the film can be too rambunctious and over the top for its own good a lot of time but the film embraces its ridiculousness thanks to the ecstatic atmosphere, charming cast involved and highly captivating musical numbers, most of which bop hard. Not to mention look at how well choreographed and sudden these car chases and crashes are; some of the best I’ve ever seen. ⁣ ⁣ Most of the films nitpicks and issues can be viewed as easily dissmissable to it being part of the overarching SNL gimmick being carried over. Won’t win points for authenticity or realism either. ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣(Continued in comments) (at Chicago, Illinois) https://www.instagram.com/p/CRzRog7see-/?utm_medium=tumblr

So, M. Night Shambles-on is back. After the mixed reception of Glass closing off Unbreakable and Split with a whisper and a whimper, he has his next project: 𝐎𝐋𝐃. I went into this one blind as a bat, given Shyamalan’s unlucky track record with his previous films; his films are an unlucky coin toss between being solid or full-on dumpster fires. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ What we have here though is another emotional roller coaster that frequently struggles to avoid veering off into the realm of ridiculousness.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ I can comfortably say the acting is decent; they try their best to make use of the script they have and carry it on as their own but I’d say what they were given with wasn’t enough. For starters, the dialogue Shyamalan used here has to be some of the worst he’s ever written; dubious, very stifled and hard to stomach for the first 2/3’s of the runtime. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ And two, they don’t do their respective characters any justice. Repeatedly jumping from emotion to emotion is a strenuous task for any actor to achieve and not only could barely any of these actors nail those beats successfully every single time but it effectively killed my interest for any of these guys. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ I could honestly care less about the production design since not much was really done with the beach to further sell the drama but the sound design was a step above that. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ The concept being used here is far from farfetched honestly. Getting old is a horrifying reality to face and consider but it happens so slowly that we don't realize how often we take age and time for granted. Speed it up drastically and you can understand the horror some of us have to deal with. Not to mention he does, at the very least, try to offer an interesting take on relationships with others when time is involved and what your grievances with others really mean in the end and by how much. Both the cinematography and editing do an admittedly stellar job at conveying that passing of time and the deteriorating mental acuity that comes with it.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ (Continued in comments) (at Beach) https://www.instagram.com/p/CRsNNRvsDmf/?utm_medium=tumblr

If Spec Ops: The Line is a brilliant deconstruction of protagonist syndrome, then I’m inclined to say “𝐑𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐉𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞” is both a brilliant deconstruction of the revenge thriller and a deeply poignant deconstruction of trauma…..or at least a solid attempt at doing so.⁣ ⁣ ⁣ Before I explain that bit, let’s get the obvious out of the way: Mads Mikkelsen. Starstuck, hilarious, terrifying and poignant all at once, this was one of the best performances I’ve seen from him in a long time; a perfect UNO reversal card to wipe the taste out my mouth after being wasted in Chaos Walking. Other cast members are about as impactful as him. ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ The morally questionable characters they portray are just as enticing as Captain Martin Walker himself; walking that fine line between being too comedic to be broken or being too shattered to convey a hilarious response. Even as stereotypical as they come across, my perception on them all was shattered about halfway through.⁣ ⁣ In these circumstances, these characters may not fit alongside one another but director Anders Thomas Jensen has a clear grasp ahold of the characters inner turmoils and the juxtaposition of moods and genre, allowing his direction to truly blossom amongst the drear atmosphere and production design. Circumstances aside, we learn a lot about his style and how well it clashes with these series of events.⁣ ⁣ The film topples topics about fate, chance, karma and justice amongst other things while the movie, as a whole, delves past following a legend on Ukrainian coincidences, questioning if life can be mathematically predicted, or if coincidences are simply that. How grief affects mental heath, how it's hard to accept that sometimes things are out of our control and there is no one to blame, how the pain of losing people can destroy families and the limits of human perception, these are just some of the themes explored in a novel, poetic manner. It also understands that the most difficult of tragedies to process are sometimes the ones with no one to blame, using its own medium to manipulate our perception of events and toy with our emotions.⁣ ⁣ ⁣ (Continued in comments) (at Denmark) https://www.instagram.com/p/CRl2ORFsa71/?utm_medium=tumblr
