Spider-man: The Animated Series, 111 (May 20, 1995) - “The Hobgoblin, Part One”
Teleplay by: Larry Brody Story by: John Semper Directed by: Bob Richardson
The Breakdown
Norman Osborn (of Osborn Industries) is sick of living under Wilson Fisk’s heel, so he does what any rational billionaire would do, and hires an assassin. But since this is a Spider-man cartoon, Norman also provides his hitman with a goblin-themed supervillain suit, plus an accompanying array of weaponry, all in keeping with the motif (ie, bombs shaped like pumpkins, a glider loosely fashioned after a bat, and also a laser gun for good measure).  Anyways his name is the Hobgoblin and he’s what this episode is all about.
The hit is meant to go down at a public event where Fisk will be doing some legitimate-businessman-things. Fortunately, Peter Parker is also in attendance as a press photographer, allowing him to save Fisk’s life with his spider-reflexes (Pete still doesn’t know he’s the Kingpin) before jumping into action as Spider-man.  The web-head’s interference doesn’t go over well with the Goblin, who demands more money to finish the job, but Norman ostensibly refuses out of short-sighted greed.  Predictably, that doesn’t also go over very well, so the Hobgoblin decides to get even by stealing/keeping Norman’s goblin-gadgets, and betraying him to…
…THE KINGPIN OF CRIME! So, Hobby heads over to Fisk’s place, and offers to double-cross Norman in exchange for… I can’t remember the specifics. Crime things?  *Checks notes* Yeah, Crime things. As his first assignment, Fisk sends Hobgoblin to kidnap Harry, Norman’s Son, [and Peter’s new roommate - more on that below] for ransom; and the price for Harry’s safe return? The Legal rights to ALL of Norman’s inventions, signed over to Wilson Fisk! Looks like the Kingpin has this one in the bag, except for one little hiccup…
For some reason Fisk refuses to pay for Harry’s abduction, and since Hobgoblin is apparently a man with only one tactic, he heads back over to Norman’s place and offers to double-(or is it triple?)-cross Fisk this time around. Naturally, Norman isn’t buying it, but then the Hobgoblin offers two compelling arguments.  1) “Why not?” and, 2) “give me some even more powerful weapons, please”, which is evidently all the convincing Norman needs to justify handing over the keys to an even larger/more powerful glider; Replete with heat-seeking missiles, projectile razor discs (anything to appease the almighty toy sales reps), and even a cutting-edge remote control! (oooOOOoooh)
Meanwhile, our friendly neighbourhood wall crawler has been busy trying to find Harry, and figures he might as well start by warning Norman, but he coincidentally arrives at Oscorp Industries mere seconds after the Goblin has acquired his new glider.  Since our hero doesn’t realize his adversary is actually in cahoots with Norman (again), another fight ensues, but this time Spidey is overwhelmed by the new enhanced glider jet, and just as he jumps for cover into an abandoned building, two heat-seeking missiles follow him inside and… BOOOM!
Welp! I guess that’s the end of Spider-man.
To Be Continued…

The Verdict
I have a bit of a soft spot for this episode, because it was also the first one that I ever saw.  You see, during the early years of my childhood, I lived in darkness and anguish because cable was too expensive (unlike streaming which has only grown cheaper, more accessible,  and increasingly easier to navigate), and thus many Saturday morning cartoons remained painfully outside my grasp.  The only ways to see new episodes of my favourite shows, were through the efforts of my very thoughtful Granny (who would tape what she could on video cassette), blockbuster rentals, and occasionally friends.  Tragically, Spider-man wasn’t accessible through any of these venues, but I was well aware of the show’s existence thanks to the Toys ‘R Us catalogue, and the weekly TV Guide, both of which kept me up to date on what was hot.  And so it would continue to be, until the glorious day when my parents finally did the right thing, and got a cable subscription (there was a promotion). Of course, you’d best believe that I’d done my research about exactly which programming would now be available to me, and Spider-man was one of the top shows on my hit list. On the first Saturday of my “cable-renaissance” I popped on the TV, and was greeted by ‘The Hobgoblin: Part 1.’  It was one of the greatest moments of my life.
Anyways, it’s a pretty dumb episode. Like, the Hobgoblin is extremely reckless, and his motivations are poorly defined. To be fair, his storyline was always messy and anticlimactic, even in the original comics, but that was mainly because the writers kept getting fired before anyone could resolve the story satisfyingly. Even then, the mystery built around character was rife with intrigue in the books, and there was always the sense that Hobgoblin’s story was building to something big.
This show had a real chance to do something a bit more intentional, but the one brief reference to Hobgoblin’s secret identity is almost thrown in as an afterthought.  Additionally, he doesn’t really seem to have any master plan other than committing acts of violence and betraying people for… profit, I guess? There’s just not a lot here to draw me in.
Obviously, if you’re a kid this is a rollicking good time with lots of flashy gadgets, and exciting action sequences. So, I guess at the end of the day the episode succeeds at what it set out to accomplish, and that’s fine.
2.5 stars (out of 5)

Parting Thoughts
Thanks to this episode, I was briefly under the assumption that Hobgoblin had always been the OG Spidey-Goblin-Foe in the comics, with Green Goblin being introduced later on.  It’s an interesting choice to have Norman start out as the mastermind behind the Goblin before eventually adopting it for himself. Sadly, I don’t think this show ever did a whole lot with HG’s and Norman’s relationship, which seems like another missed opportunity, but I could be forgetting something.
Mark Hamill provides the voice work for Hobgoblin, but he mostly just copy/pastes his Joker voice from ‘Batman: the animated series. It’s serviceable, but I would have preferred something a little more original. But then a gig is a gig, and since he was probably hired FOR that voice, I can’t really blame him for leaning into it.
I find it kind of hilarious how much of a big deal Norman makes over the Goblin-Glider’s remote control.  Talk about the height of technology, amiright?  Man, Hobgoblin is gonna lose his mind when he finds out about blue-tooth-operated drones, roughly 30 years down-the-line.
I skipped past it in the breakdown, but midway through the episode Aunt May decides to visit Peter at his new place (Norman offers to pay for Harry’s condo if he can find a respectable roommate, and Pete fit the bill) when Hobgoblin interrupts to kidnap Harry with a gas bomb.  As a result, May is rendered unconscious for the rest of the episode, and taken to the hospital.  The Doctor explains that she’s experiencing an ‘extended form of seizure’, which is notably not how seizures work, meaning May Parker’s diagnosis is either medically significant (warranting further examination), or the result of malpractice. The American health-care system strikes again!  But seriously Pete, you need to get a second opinion.

Asking your take on Camille. People say the line about did he take you to his parents gallery is about her.
Honestly, I wasn’t in the fandom at all when Hamille was a “thing”. I joined the fandom during the pandemic in early 2020. That being said, I think we need to take Harry at his word: everything we see is work. He doesn’t think he’s ever been publicly with anybody. It’s very easy to include lines in songs that have double meaning, or have meaning that could be ascribed to a particular situation, with the goal of furthering the idea of the stunt. In the case of Harry, take him at his word.

Gina, I don’t want to sound ignorant, but why do many people in the fandom think Harry wants to leave the Azoffs? Correct me if I’m missing something, but 1. Harry has known Jeff and his family for about 10 years, and he even referred to him as one of his best friends at a show. Sure, they aren’t perfect, but Harry seems to work with people he’s known and trusted for a long time like James Corden and Ben Winston.
2. Even though h*livia was a disaster and hurt Harry’s reputation, his team has been successful in selling his public image. There are tons of people who genuinely believe he is a womanizer. I even know ex larries who turned antis because of hamille and all the stories about FL being about her.
For those reasons, I honestly don’t see Harry leaving the Azoffs, but I could be wrong.
By the way, I want to give a special thanks to you and all the blogs that have stayed here for so long. Thanks for keeping everything organized and being voices of reason, compared to the chaos on tw haha
Hi, darling. Thank you for the sweet compliment.
I can't speak for everyone, but my impression is that there are a lot of fans who aren't happy with certain aspects of Harry's career, and they blame Jeff and Irving. They interpret various aspects of Harry's behavior over the years as being unhappy, overworked, and used against his will to make more and more money for the Azoffs. So, in their minds, if he had "better" management, his career and life would be better (I'm not sure what that looks like, but I gather it means things like not being closeted, not having PR relationships, not having the womanizer image, not doing residencies in America, etc.). Plus, a lot of people just hate the Azoffs (Irving, particularly) because they've got a pretty shady reputation, have their hands in literally every aspect of the music industry, and, on the surface, at least, seem pretty greedy.
Yes, they've been successful at selling Harry's public image. Whether that's an image Harry wants is up for debate. I think the bigger accomplishment is that they've been successful at taking him from former boybander to worldwide solo superstar with tons of awards (including AOTY), critical acclaim, and massive ticket sales, tours, and album streams in just eight years. I would imagine those are all things Harry would have wanted.
All of that is why I don't see him leaving the Azoffs unless there was some massive falling out behind the scenes. I do think Harry was very angry about how Holivia panned out (and he had every right to be. Although people seem to place all the blame on Jeff and forget that Harry also had an agent who brought him the role and likely negotiated at least some of the deal). Some of the stuff fans are angry about (and maybe Harry also isn't happy about) are issues that are bigger than who his manager is.

CLOSED! Preliminary Hot Vintage TV Men List
Alright folks! We have one week left on submissions for the Hot Vintage TV Men's Bracket! As promised here is a list of all the Hot Vintage TV Men who have been submitted and passed our preliminary eligibility checks. There are a handful of guys on this list and one or two not on it that we are currently still debating on so reminder that this list is not final and subject to change.
Currently we have 231 Hot Vintage TV Men!
Also in advance of the competition I'd like to remind anyone submitting propaganda for someone that starred in a show that aired only partially during our timeframe or was under 18 for a part of a shows filming, to please make sure you are only submitting propaganda that is from within our timeframe and when the actor was 18 years or older. This is also just good to keep in mind in general as several people submitted actors for shows that aren't eligible for our tournament either because it was outside our time period or in one case the actor was underaged for the entirety of the show (though many were eligible for other shows they were submitted for). We do our best to screen for these things but sometimes it's hard to tell or it’s a show we don't personally know well enough so we appreciate help from y'all letting us know if you do catch anything.
List below the cut

allie💖 since it's 2024, I was wondering do you (as a larrie) still stand behind everything you said on your blog about larry? Like them never breaking up, elounor, hamille and other gf's being stunts? Or has anything changed? ❤️
Absolutely, without a doubt. I'm 100% confident that every post I've ever shared or written over the past ELEVEN years has been entirely accurate and truthful and I stand behind every single thing to this day 📖✋
Seriously now, what I think it's interesting to discuss is how we get a broader view of things after a while and after important events happen when we get more context. I thought they were going to come out, I thought babygate was going to end, I thought stunts were going to stop happening. I changed my mind SO MUCH about their closeting in general over the years -- especially during 1D days, we used to have this very narrow perspective that they were being forced into their closeting by their management and they were just trying to come out as soon as possible, and it was simple as that. And it wasn't! And while I think a big part of that is true, I think that most of us (larries) kept this kind of belief after the band was over and I mean... it was obviously very disappointing and we were obviously very wrong in these predictions, things were way more complicated than that! And now, after so much stuff happening, it's very clear that we were just very innocent and hopeful back then 😂
But no, I've never changed my mind about stunts or about Harry and Louis being together all of these years. As time goes by, IMO stunts get more obvious and more stupid. This is one of the things that time and repetitive patterns and consistency just reinforce my beliefs. So I will never believe any of the girlfriends were real... I have a fucking brain.

Made a big mistake of posting a ss of a boobiegate Tumblr post on my twt💀ohgod people are so pressed, lost even a few moots over it😀
Yikes, so sorry! Twarries are often brand new fans and they don’t care enough to learn the history or all the uncomfortable facts about their faves’ closet. They usually learn their Larry lore from TikTok or some stupid clowning threads on Twitter.
There’s often zero critical thinking. They turn every clowning into facts, they believe in Hamille, Hussell, Bradrry and a little side Zarry depending on the week. They can’t imagine a time when no one in this fandom once believed Briana was ever pregnant, even the press didn’t… But time has passed long enough and too many of the fans aren’t around anymore to tell the tale.
So yeah, you’re probably disrupting the reality of these new fans who usually happily lap everything up and all the efforts since 2020, with AOTV and the annual Christmas pics, have provided them enough fodder for a new narrative they won’t question anymore.

Seeing how we've talked about Cartoon Network originals, may as well talk about the shows from Cartoon Network's sister studio, Warner Bros Animation. Favorite character from the first batch of the following Warner Bros Animation shows from before Kids WB and the initial lineup for Kids WB's first year: Tiny Toon Adventures, Taz-Mania, Batman the Animated Series, The Plucky Duck Show, Animaniacs 1993, The Sylvester & Tweety Mysteries, Pinky and the Brain, and Freakazoid?
Super fuckin shooters let's go. Now we'll go ahead and elimiate taz-mania (haven't seen it) the plucky duck show (as I don't think i've seen it) and sylvester and tweety (Which I haven't seen enough of only small piec. Unlike with early disney though this nearly isn't as bad anyways...
Tiny Toon Adventures: Buster, great performance lots of fun with Plucky as a close second but simply not reaching the heights of his dad. The show itself is solid, 90's as heck in a good way, fun, and succesfully making it's own minty fresh new cast. A great start for WBA. Also I really dig the reboot.
BTAS: God this is a hard one as they had just so many great villians and an excellent batman (Also to be clear as I didn't realize this for years, the new batman adventures is isit's own show when we get there). It dosen't help i've been binging Serum Lake a lot, a youtuber who focuses mostly on BTAS (and lately caped crusader), with sprints into beyond and superman tas.
So this hard choice goes to... The Joker. I almost didn't as I prefe rother villians episodes.. but damn if hamill dosen't command every scene mr j is in. He is the joker for a reason.
The show itself.. is one i've talked about.. and one of the best animated shows period. I'ts a perfect adaptation taking everything that makes batman work and throwing out the decades of continuity crust that had built up. Watching those serum lake videos made me realize just HOW many villians were redefined by BTAS: Mr Freeze, Poision Ivy, Clayface, Mad Hatter, Two Face all villians who before this were just kinda forgotten but got a second chance thanks to BTAS. The show is a fucking masterpiece in episodic storytelling, making each episode a stand alone masterpiece with the occasoinal sequel or two parter to shake it up. While there were other great shows to come I feel only one directly competes and even it's probably not as good. We'll get there for now..
Animaniacs: Slappy. It will always be slappy. She had the best segments, was hilarious, and was sadly absent from the reboot for the most part. There's no one better
The show itself is fucking amazing though. While Slappy easily won the warners themselves are some of the best cartoons characters ever made, the bugs bunnies of the 90s (Sorry buster but they picked up the schitck better)
youtube
The segments all slapped; Pinky and the Brain was good enough to get it's own show, goodfellas like slappy deserved one but didn't get it, the hip hippos are underated, rita and runt break my heart, and buttons and mindy sucks hard and is the worst because Mindy's mom is the worst.
Pinky and the Brain. Pinky. NARF. Rob Paulsen always delivers as this moron. The show itself what i've seen is pretty good, a nice expansion of an already graet series of shorts. It's decent stuff if better as part of animaniacs.. though the series at least gave us pinky and the brain and larry.
Freakazoid: HEY JAKE WANNA NAME COSGROVE THE BEST CHARACTER. Oh boy would i? That gag alone gets him here. The show itself is one I need to revisit as it's simply not streaming for no good reason, but was funny, rapid fire and has one of my faviorite gags in anything, one that's stuck with me since I saw it at my grandpa's house as a kid.

Camille had a boyfriend when she was 'with' Harry, the one she is engaged to now. She broke up with him shortly before dating Harry and then returned to him after the Hamille break up and is now engaged to him. Putting two and two together, she never broke up with him in the first place. During Hamille the Camille twitter UAs were still updating on her and her boyfriend as they were still spending a lot of time together. They were confused how she went from being super loved up with him to suddenly dating Harry. He was even there for some Hamille pap pics. The only reason people think they were real is because they were 'cute' together, and Harries need to believe that at least one of Harry's relationships were real so they can continue projecting their heterosexual fantasies on him. It didn't help that he put her voice recording on a song and referred to her as his ex girlfriend, and she referred to him as her ex boyfriend. IIRC Caroline Flack also referred to Harry as an ex boyfriend so it's not the first time a beard has done that. People say it was a private and low key relationship. Please. He literally put her voice recording on a song and he marketed her album to be about her. She posted a clip on IG? moaning his name. She mocked Larries and she did everything she could to ride off Harry's fame, just like Olivia. She connected herself to Harry every way she could and leeched off him. Not to mention she is a toxic person and she still goes into the Beachwood cafe whenever she is promoting something as she knows it gets Harries excited. I think people, the het Harries in particular, just 'need' one of his relationships to be real to prove he isn't gay, so they pick Hamille because it was more low key when compared to the likes of Haylor, Hendall and Holivia. But it still wasn't low key, and was clearly PR.
All of this.
