Ways to Save Money on Laptop Water Damage Repair Costs
Accidents will happen, and liquid damage is one of the major mishaps for users of laptops. From an actual coffee spill to getting drenched in unexpected rainstorm, water and electronics don't really mix too well. So, a lot of wet laptops make many people start thinking about how much it could cost to repair laptop water damage. There are several ways to reduce the costs and possibly save your device. This article will look at some of the ways of cutting down these costs and the need to consult a liquid damage repair expert, where possible.
Act Quickly to Minimise Damage
The first and foremost thing to be done if your laptop encounters liquid is to switch it off immediately. This sudden move could save it from short circuits and lessen the possibility of damage, hence reducing the cost of laptop water damage repair. Remove any attached power sources and, if possible, take out the battery.
Carefully lean your laptop to one side to let it drop off whatever liquid inside it will come out. Use a non-fibrous cloth to dab off what little water you can still see. Do not try to wipe, or it may cause the liquid to go further in and reach other areas that are undamaged.
Drying Techniques
The most economical way to at least try and fix liquid damage is by air-drying it correctly. Place your laptop in a warm and dry place; make sure the air circulation is good. Keep it at a 45-degree angle with the keyboard facing down to drain the remaining liquid.
Place the laptop in a container of desiccants like uncooked rice or silica gel packets. Allow the laptop to stay in the container for 24-48 hours to absorb the moisture. Not very effective, but it does help with residual dampness.
Don't Make These Common Mistakes
Avoid using a hairdryer, oven, or any other heating device to dry out your laptop. This can cause further damage to the sensitive components and may increase repair costs for laptop water damage.
Patience is key. Wait at least 48 hours before attempting to turn on your laptop. Powering up too soon can cause short circuits if any moisture remains.
Seek professional assessment.
If your laptop doesn't power on after drying, or if you're unsure about its condition, consult a liquid damage repair specialist. Many offer free or low-cost initial assessments, which can help you understand the extent of the damage and potential repair costs.
Tumblr media
Professional technicians have the tools and expertise to accurately diagnose liquid damage. They can identify issues that might not be immediately apparent, potentially saving you from more expensive repairs down the line.
Consider Independent Repair Centres
Independent repair centres often offer more competitive pricing compared to manufacturer-authorised services. When looking to reduce laptop water damage repair costs, these centres can be an excellent option.
Many independent repair shops specialise in liquid damage repair. Their focused expertise can lead to more efficient and cost-effective solutions for your damaged laptop.
Explore Repair Options
Sometimes, only specific components are affected by liquid damage. A skilled liquid damage repair specialist can often replace or repair individual parts rather than entire systems, significantly reducing costs.
If your data is at risk, some repair services offer data recovery options. While this might add to the initial cost, it can save you from losing valuable information and potentially costly data recovery efforts later.
Preventive measures for future savings
To avoid future laptop water damage repair costs, consider investing in protective accessories. Keyboard covers, water-resistant laptop bags, and spill-proof containers for drinks can all help prevent liquid accidents.
Regular cleaning and maintenance of your laptop can help identify potential issues early. This proactive approach can prevent small problems from turning into costly repairs.
Insurance and extended warranties
Check if your home insurance covers accidental damage to electronics. Some policies offer protection against liquid damage, which could significantly reduce your out-of-pocket expenses.
If you're prone to accidents, an extended warranty that covers accidental damage might be worth considering. While it's an upfront cost, it can save you money in the long run if you experience liquid damage.
Negotiate repair costs.
Don't settle for the first repair quote you receive. Contact several liquid damage repair specialists and compare their prices. This can help you find the most cost-effective option for your specific situation.
Some repair services may be willing to match or beat competitors' prices. Don't hesitate to ask if they can offer a better deal, especially if you've found a lower price elsewhere.
Consider refurbished parts.
If certain components need replacement, ask your repair specialist about using refurbished parts. These can be significantly cheaper than new parts while still providing reliable performance.
Reputable repair services often offer warranties on refurbished parts, ensuring you're not compromising on quality while saving on laptop water damage repair costs.
Timing Your Repair
Some repair shops may offer discounts during slower seasons. If your laptop is still functional and the damage isn't severe, consider timing your repair to take advantage of potential off-season rates.
If your laptop needs multiple repairs or services, ask if the repair shop offers a discount for bundling these services together. This can lead to overall savings on your repair bill.
Conclusion
While laptop water damage can be a stressful and potentially costly experience, there are numerous ways to minimise repair expenses. From immediate actions like quick power-down and proper drying techniques to seeking help from a liquid damage repair specialist, each step can contribute to reducing overall costs. Remember, the key is to act swiftly and make informed decisions. By following these tips and considering preventive measures for the future, you can navigate the challenges of liquid damage repair more effectively and economically. Whether you're dealing with a minor spill or significant water exposure, these strategies can help you save money on laptop water damage repair costs while ensuring your device gets the care it needs.

IMAGINE THIS! Eddie is a musician, Steve is studying to become a teacher. Right before Steve's exams, he goes to a cafe to study. The Band arrives to play a gig and Eddie knocks over a glass of water with his guitar case.
Eddie has a up and coming band, they are playing small gigs all around the country. Even though they gathered up quite a following, they still haven't signed to any major label yet. Because they are not posers or whatever. The fans love Corroded Coffin, for the hard sounds with the clever thoughtful lyrics and also due to the fact that Eddie is a very charismatic frontman, who has the allure of an old timey rock star. Steve is sitting in the cafƩ, studying for his exams, writing frantically on his laptop, his glasses on the tip of his nose. Since he had a hard time in high school, he still thinks he is less than in the intellectual departmen, which is of course not true. And he has an amazing hand with the kids he is currently teaching, as student teacher. When Eddie and his band arrive at the venue, loud, all dressed in black leather, some instruments carried on their backs, he doesn't even look up. Steve was used to bands playing in the back of the venue. The cafƩ and bar area was only separated by a small glass door, so he was usually gone by the time, they got on the stage. But today the weather wasn't exactly on his side, he wasn't going to walk home in the pouring rain, risking a cold. It was too close to exam season. Eddie's hair was dripping wet, some of the droplets are running into his eyes. While Gareth is asking for someone to show them where to set up their stuff, Eddie ventures into the cafƩ area, to steal some napkins off a table. When he turns around to leave again, tapping over his eyes, the swing of his guitarcase knocks over a glass of water on a table behind him. Whos table you ask? Why, of course Steve Harrington's. What a terrible coincidence. Steve jumps up, shouting "FUCK" as he gathers up napkins trying to dry up the spilled water on his keypad. Startled by the cussing behind him, Eddie turns around and immediately recognises the damage he had caused. "Oh my god, I'm so fucking sorry, here, I'll get you more napkins, or a towel. Gareth!! Ask the waiter if he has a towel?!" Gareth looks up from his conversation with one of the staff member and just shakes his head in an annoyed fashion. Like Munson was up to some bullshit again and he wasn't going to be part of it.
Eddie is frantically bringing more napkins to the table, furthering Steve's annoyance at him. "Please.. just fucking stop, man." He is wiping his wet hands on his blue jeans looking at the laptop mournfully. "It's already fucking ruined. Shit." Steve sighs and walks around the table, a hand over his mouth, looking at the crime scene, wondering how he could afford another laptop that fast. But that long haired idiot, who knocked over his glass kept on babbling, ignoring the fact that Steve was in the middle of a crisis. "Listen, oh my god, I'm so sorry man. I read, that you shouldn't turn in on for bit after, uh, a spillage. Maybe it will dry? Or maybe we should put some rice on it? Maybe they have rice in the kitchen. Gareth?- My friend Nancy says that is bullshit, but-" "STOP! Please just go away." Steve sounded desprate. Eddie raised his hands in defeat, still holding some Napkins. "Okay. I'm sorry. I'm with the band, who plays tonight. You can message us for a refund, or repair.", he says more calmly and walks away. Steve watches the young man walk back to his band members, he assumed, at least. They all wearing the same sort of clothes. "What are you doing with all those Napkins?", Jeff asks bemused. "Just shut up, man." Steve is close to tears. All of his notes and work he already did ahead of time were on the laptop. He did not safe them anywhere else. He grabs his coat and cigarette and leaves the cafƩ to have a smoke. If anyone wants to take any of his other stuff, they were free to do so, everything was ruined anyway. He watches the band carry all their amps and instruments in, from a little distance. There was a quick glance exchanged between him and that long haired idiot. He looks like a beaten puppy with those big sad eyes. Shit, now Steve felt like an asshole. Back inside, Steve waited for a while, to turn on his laptop, like the idiot had said. Meanwhile he was texting his best friend Robin the details of the worst evening in his life. She is sympathetic and hopeful, that the gods were in favour of his laptop. And while she didn't think Steve was the villain of the play, he might have been a bit harsh. They guy with the curls didn't do it on purpose, to ruin his life. After a while Steve breaths in deeply and exhales. He presses the on button. The laptops starts. He types in his password. Loading. All of his open tabs and word documents appear. The laptop was alive. He tries to write some words and all the keys work. A sigh of relieve. The gods had mercy on his computer in the end. After thanking the universe, Steve's eyes wander to the other side of the cafƩ. Behind the glass door, the band is setting up and starting to do some sound checking with the technician.
The idiot is holding his guitar, strumming a few chords and signing the thumbs up to the tech girl, who nods, looking bored. Now he is singing along to his chords, his eyes closed, like he is feeling the music or something. Steve finds, the idiot has a very beautiful voice. And a handsome face. He sighs. With that new information the apology is going to become even harder. When the band is done soundchecking and Eddie climbs off the stage, bickering and laughing with his band mates, Steve decides to go for it. "You can do this, dingus." pops up on his phone, before he puts it back into his pocket.
When Steve walks up to Eddie, the others are still rumaging around. Before Steve can open his mouth to say a single word, Eddie raises his hand. "Let me stop you there. I talked to the guys. We have a door-deal with the venue. Depending on how much money we make, you can have some of the money to pay for the repair." Eddie chuckles. "Now we just have to pray some people show up." Steve raises his left eyebrow, listening to him. "It's not like theres no people coming to our gigs, it's just that it's raining, and it's a weekday, people are at work..." Eddie is rambling again.
"Hey, can I say something too?" Steve chimes in, stern but not unkind. "Uh, sure." Eddie answers. "My laptop is fine. Everything works. I wanted to apologize for being a dick." Steve takes down his glasses and puts them on the top of his head. "I was just very stressed. You didn't do it on purpose." Eddie looks down and smiles. He seems shy.
"I'm a bit clumsy.... yeah." Steve finds it almost funny, that a guy like him, who just confidently sang on a stage, becomes shy like that. "Well, don't worry about it. I just thought... It's fine." Eddie looks up at him. "Why dont you stay for the set? Be our guest?" Steve does not answer. "I'll put you on my bar-tab. Stay and listen. Here- have a tape." Steve looks at the tape he got handed. "I don't have anything to play this on..." "Don't worry. I'll make it worth your while. Get a drink. We start in 20 minutes." Everything in Steve says, it's better to go home. Sleep and study. But he does stay for the set, to see the charaismatic idiot in action.
and then they fall in love or something.

Be me.
Walk home in the rain for 45 minutes.
See pretty lights along my way.
Take pictures of pretty lights.
Phone gets water damage.
Go to repair shop that fixed it before.
They can't do it same day this time because the phone is now considered "old".
Can't get home without phone (which still works for now).
Go to all repair shops in the immediate area (five in total).
None of them can do it same day and also say I'm better off getting a new phone for the price the repair will cost.
Go to Telus to get a new phone.
Can't do it without government-issued photo ID.
Health card for some reason does not count as photo ID, despite being government-issued and having my photo.
Go back to first repair shop and ask if I can pay up front for them to order the parts so I can come back once they've got said parts and have it repaired same day.
Yes, but it will take 2-5 business days and Black Friday is coming up so I'd have to wait a week and hope my phone holds out till then.
Otherwise I'd have to fill out an application online for a copy of my birth certificate so I can get the purple card that counts as government-issued photo ID.
Canada Post is on strike and there's a months-long backlog already, so my phone will be long dead by then.
Say I'll order the parts and hope my phone holds out till after the weekend.
But wait! They can sell me a phone and transfer all my shit and don't need government-issued photo ID.
I don't understand the particulars of why and at this point don't care.
Choose new phone based on ability to take nice photos (no, I have not learned anything).
So here I am on my laptop on the mall's free wifi waiting for the transfer to complete. (:
Also bought a soursop at the Asian grocery store and four scoops of ice cream from Baskin Robbins (pralines and cream with maple walnut, which I mixed together, and citrus ice with pineapple coconut, which I mixed together).

7. Magic Mirror šŸŖž / Donut Devotee šŸ©
ā€œUh, yeah,ā€ says Raleigh, surveying the mess of damp drywall, fiberglass, and insulation strewn across what used to be Dr. Moriā€™s desk. ā€œThis is gonna take a while. You probably shouldnā€™t even be in here, you know.ā€
Dr. Mori shakes her head, the blue tips of her razor-sharp black bob whispering against the white N95 mask obscuring the lower half of her face. Her arms are folded across her chest, and sheā€™s planted protectively in front of the one corner of her office untouched by disaster. Clustered on a stack of books is an entire animal shelterā€™s worth of little plastic cat figurines in various positions, some wearing costumes, some wrapped into sushi ā€” he wants to say something about them, but heā€™s afraid sheā€™ll think heā€™s making fun of her. Sheā€™s piled another stack of thick textbooks onto a folding chair ā€” spines out so Raleigh can see that theyā€™re all robotics-adjacent ā€” and her slim silver laptop is perched at the top in a precarious attempt at a standing desk. A line of small robots and action figures, presumably previously housed on the shelves that got taken out when her ceiling caved in, are lined up on either side of the folding chair like knights ready to do her bidding. Itā€™s honestly kind of an impressive setup, if he ignores the myriad of safety hazards.
ā€œItā€™s okay,ā€ she says. ā€œI can use this part just fine.ā€
Raleigh raises an eyebrow. ā€œItā€™s going to get worse in here before it gets better. Iā€™m gonna have to redo most of the ceiling. And fix that pipe, and the water damage in the wall. Not to mention the wiring.ā€
Dr. Moriā€™s unfazed. ā€œThatā€™s fine. I have headphones.ā€
ā€œOkay,ā€ says Raleigh dubiously. ā€œUp to you. Iā€™m gonna have to come back later today and get some measurements, see whatā€™s going on in there. Will you be here around two?ā€
She nods.Ā
ā€œAll right, well ā€” be careful in here. I dunno the last time the insulation got replaced up there, itā€™s probably full of asbestos.ā€ He gives her a little salute and goes to step out of the office, but as heā€™s passing the threshold, she reaches out and taps his arm, drawing her hand back as quickly as if heā€™d burned her.
ā€œI want a bookshelf.ā€ Her dark eyes are intense over the top of her mask, her eyebrows sharp and precise. ā€œAnd better wattage in the outlets. And more outlets.ā€Ā
Stepping carefully over the debris on the floor ā€” sheā€™s wearing what look like military surplus boots with her smart skirt and sweater ā€” she indicates the space behind her desk. ā€œBookshelf here. Short is okay.ā€ She holds her hand about three feet from the floor. ā€œOutlets here and here. The shelves can stay where they were, but I would like them reinforced.ā€
Raleigh leans against the doorframe, trying not to smile. ā€œAnything else?ā€
Dr. Mori considers. ā€œCan you soundproof?ā€ she asks, and Raleigh laughs.
Her eyes curve into a smile above her mask. Raleigh makes some notes, flashes her a thumbs-up. ā€œIā€™ll see what I can do, Dr. Mori.ā€
She pauses for just a second too long, then dips her head. ā€œCall me Mako.ā€
ā€”
Mako lets out a huge breath the moment the facilities guy is gone. Sheā€™s also aware that she probably shouldnā€™t be working in her destroyed cubicle, but she just got her own office and she refuses point-blank to go back to sharing space with the Hansens and pretending she canā€™t hear the father-son duo sniping back and forth at each other every waking moment. Theyā€™ve been in the field a long time and she respects their work, but given the choice between the two of them and the potential asbestos, well, at least she can wear a respirator to shield herself from one of those.
But the facilities guy didnā€™t blink when she made her requests, even though they technically exceed what could be considered necessary repairs for the caved-in ceiling. She hopes heā€™s the one who comes back to do the work. She hadnā€™t expected him to be cute, even though she really doesnā€™t have time to deal with him being cute. But strong and soft is an easy way to her heart, and if he has to be in her space for the next couple of weeks, well, she might as well enjoy it.
Her last lecture of the day ends at quarter of two, and she hurries back to her office afterward, unwilling to miss her chance to supervise any remodeling plans. The Hansens have a whole wall of bookshelves in their office. Mako has resorted to piling her books on the floor behind her desk and using them as auxiliary shelf space.
She opens her laptop at her makeshift desk and tries to look busy when the guy shows up. Heā€™s right on time, which she appreciates, and he knocks before coming in, even though her door is open.
ā€œHey,ā€ he says. Heā€™s got a respirator around his neck, which makes her smile a little. ā€œAll right, I ran everything by my supervisor and it should be all right. I really emphasized how much your stuff had been ruined, you know, your bookshelves and all. And how the water got into some of your outlets, so thoseā€™ll need to be replaced. Might even have to add a few, just to be safe.ā€ He grins, shoves his hands into his pockets. ā€œYou mind if I poke around? Iā€™ll stay out of your way, I promise.ā€
ā€œNo, thatā€™s fine,ā€ she says, closing her laptop. ā€œI was actually thinking about going to the cafe across the street. Would you like anything? My treat.ā€
ā€œOh, you donā€™t have to ā€”ā€ he starts, but Makoā€™s eyebrows must say sheā€™s not taking no for an answer because he backtracks, ā€œUh, yeah, a tea would be great, actually. Green, hot, no milk or sugar. Thanks.ā€
She repeats it back to him and pulls her coat off the back of the folding chair. ā€œIā€™m sorry, I didnā€™t get your name.ā€
He lifts his chin and smiles. ā€œRaleigh.ā€
ā€œRaleigh,ā€ she echoes. ā€œIā€™ll be right back.ā€
ā€œTake your time,ā€ he says, pulling the respirator over his nose and mouth. ā€œThis is gonna take a while.ā€
Mako is categorically incapable of taking her time when sheā€™s excited; efficiency is both her blessing and her curse. She crosses the street to the cafe at a light jog, frightens everyone in line with her because sheā€™s still wearing her own respirator, and has to repeat her order three times because sheā€™s speaking too quickly. One green tea, hot, no milk or sugar. One matcha latte, hot, with oat milk and strawberry syrup. And six of the doughnuts on display: roasted cherry, brown butter passion fruit, chocolate sprinkle, vanilla cardamom, lychee rose, and chai apple cider.Ā
Raleighā€™s up on a ladder, a toolbox sitting open at its base, when she gets back, and heā€™s reaching up into the crumbling ceiling, a headlamp on his hard hat beaming into the detritus. Heā€™s several inches taller than Mako even without the ladder, sturdily built, and she thinks the green cargo pants heā€™s wearing shouldnā€™t do nearly as much for his backside and legs as they do. His gray t-shirt rides up as he raises his arms, and Mako nearly drops both teas and the doughnut box at the bit of stomach heā€™s inadvertently revealed. His midsection is heavily scarred, gnarled ribbons of raised tissue disappearing up toward his ribcage, and a soft roll of belly sits precariously over his belt, like just the slightest bit more might tip it into sagging.Ā
Mako is so, so glad that sheā€™s still got the respirator on.
Biting her tongue, she drags in a chair from the departmentā€™s kitchenette and sets down both teas and the doughnuts out of harmā€™s way. Then she opens her laptop back up and stares at the screen, unseeing, the afterimage of Raleighā€™s pudgy, torn-up torso burned into her vision.
Finally he hops down from the ladder and dusts off his hands, doffs his mask around his neck. ā€œItā€™s bad up there,ā€ he confirms. ā€œProbably a couple weeksā€™ worth of work, at least.ā€
Mako nods slowly, lowering her own mask to sip her latte. ā€œOkay. I can handle that.ā€
Raleigh pops the lid off his tea and leans against the wall. He shifts the cup to his right hand and slowly moves his left shoulder in small circles.
Mako gestures to the box sitting on the chair. ā€œPlease,ā€ she says. ā€œHelp yourself. Itā€™s my thank-you for honoring all of my requests.ā€
He sets his tea down and opens the box. Mako asked the barista to write the names of each flavor on the top so she wouldnā€™t have to stumble through them all one more time, and Raleigh takes his time deciding.
ā€œIā€™m sorry if this is too forward,ā€ he says finally, and itā€™s not at all what Mako is expecting. She inhales sharply. ā€œBut you have excellent taste in doughnuts.ā€
Oh. She exhales in a shaky laugh. ā€œThank you. Theirs are the best Iā€™ve had. Have as many as youā€™d like; Iā€™ll put the rest in the kitchen.ā€
ā€œIs there one in particular I should save for you?ā€
She nods and points to the lychee rose. ā€œPerfect,ā€ says Raleigh, taking the brown butter passion fruit. ā€œRose tastes like soap to me, but, you know, I respect it. Takes all kinds.ā€
She surreptitiously watches him eat the doughnut over the rim of her cup. Then she fires her laptop back up and watches him dip back into her periphery for another. Twenty long minutes of staring at her lines of code in R and then heā€™s back again, and finally she gives in to the instinct to turn and look at him.
ā€œSorry,ā€ he says sheepishly, and it tugs at something deep and tender inside her. ā€œAm I distracting you? Iā€™m realizing now that I missed lunch.ā€
ā€œDonā€™t worry,ā€ she manages. ā€œI got them for you.ā€
ā€”
Raleigh comes back every day. Heā€™s easygoing and affable, and Mako knows for sure heā€™s won her over when he steps in one day with his ladder, toolbox, and kneepads and says, ā€œWhatā€™s up with the Australian meathead?ā€
Mako laughs before she can stop herself. ā€œJunior or senior?ā€
He makes a face. ā€œThereā€™s two?ā€
As quietly as she can, she closes her office door. ā€œI know you have work to do,ā€ she says. ā€œBut this is crucial information. Those are the Hansens, and it is vital that you do not make me go back to sharing their office.ā€
Raleigh scoffs. ā€œI hear you. Crocodile Dundee out there just made a big show of muscling his way out of the elevator in front of me. Didnā€™t hold a single door either. Man, you can see that Iā€™m carrying shit.ā€ He shakes his head. ā€œDonā€™t you worry. Youā€™ll lose this office over my dead body.ā€
She smiles. ā€œThank you. Please, let me offer you a token of my gratitude.ā€
Doughnuts again. Raleigh eats four.
ā€”
Mako finds out what kind of green tea Raleigh likes, buys a box, and assigns him one of the random university-branded mugs in the kitchenette. She vents to him after a department meeting in which Herc ā€” ostensibly an impartial party, as department head ā€” backs up Chuckā€™s insistence on keeping his programming course in MatLab rather than R, even though MatLab is expensive and slightly old-fashioned while R is open-source and far more accessible to students. But of course, Herc taught all of his coding in MatLab when he came up through this program and god forbid anything change, ever! God forbid anything inconvenience the Hansens!Ā
Raleigh listens with his head in her ceiling as he fiddles with the pipes, and when she stops to draw breath, he says, ā€œShouldnā€™t you all be encouraging open-source stuff anyway? Isnā€™t that, like, the future?ā€
ā€œYes!ā€ Mako practically bellows. ā€œBut of course thatā€™s too easy! Thereā€™s no gatekeeping, so clearly itā€™s unsuperior.ā€ She realizes too late that itā€™s the wrong word, then has the worse realization that she waited a beat out of habit for someone to correct her. Raleigh doesnā€™t. ā€œI mean inferior,ā€ she continues with renewed zeal. ā€œHow dare anyone be able to access this information without a legacy in this program for the last forty years!ā€
Raleigh descends his ladder and winces. Thereā€™s an indistinct shape under the chest of his t-shirt that sheā€™s spent days puzzling out ā€” a binder? some kind of medical port? a particularly traumatic continuation of his scarring? ā€” but she sees now, as he rolls back his t-shirt sleeve to adjust it, that heā€™s wearing a brace around his left shoulder, fastened across his sternum.Ā
ā€œI have aspirin,ā€ she says. ā€œIf you need some.ā€
ā€œThat would be great,ā€ says Raleigh, relief smoothing his face. She hands him the bottle from her backpack and he shakes a few into his hand, washing them down with a gulp of tea. She went too late to the cafe today, delayed by the department meeting, and had to get muffins rather than doughnuts. Raleigh doesnā€™t seem bothered. He went for the miso white chocolate chip first, then the ube, and now he peels the wrapper from the double chocolate matcha. ā€œThatā€™s bullshit,ā€ he says, covering his mouth as he chews. ā€œMust be exhausting to be so obsessed with being right.ā€
Mako nods vigorously. ā€œThank you. I donā€™t understand it.ā€
ā€œYeah, thatā€™s because you seem like a reasonable person.ā€ He balls up the muffin wrapper and shoots it across the room into her wastebasket, missing it by inches. She golf-claps politely anyway, and he flashes her a sheepish grin. As he bends to retrieve it, he braces a hand against his belly where Mako knows it almost pooches out over his belt, and he stifles a burp as he straightens up. ā€œSorry. Getting a little too used to these pastries.ā€
If Mako ever wins a Nobel Prize or something, the first entity she thanks in her speech will be her box of N95s. She owes her entire working relationship with Raleigh to being able to hide her furious blushing behind them. ā€œI can stop,ā€ she offers. ā€œI just wanted to make sure you knew I appreciated your work.ā€
ā€œOh, I wonā€™t ask you to stop,ā€ says Raleigh with a laugh. He palms his belly beneath his t-shirt. ā€œEven if I probably should. By the time I finish up in here Iā€™m not going to fit through those ceiling tiles.ā€
On one hand, itā€™s probably a good thing Mako has to leave for an afternoon of meetings so she doesnā€™t combust. On the other, she processes absolutely none of what is said to her for the next few hours. Her mind is solely on Raleigh, adding up the various baked goods sheā€™s brought him and applying them to his waistline with the concentration she usually reserves for coding. In the notebook where she draws designs and diagrams for new projects, she sketches the shape of his body, the jags of his fluffy blond hair, the N95 hanging around his neck, the folds of his utility pants, the forking bolts of scar tissue reaching up to his chest.Ā
While sheā€™s out, Raleigh builds her a bookshelf that spans an entire wall.Ā
ā€”Ā
Her office is coming together. The ceiling is once again intact, not a hint of water damage remaining. Raleigh spent the last few days drilling while Mako sat contentedly in the corner with the giant gaming headphones one of her mentors, Dr. Choi, sent her for the holidays a few years ago. The vague screech of metal on drywall that filters through her shibuya-kei playlist is a welcome reminder of Raleighā€™s continued presence. There are three more outlets than she started with, all with a higher output capacity than she probably needs. Now itā€™s just the finishing touches that are left, and she should be glad for that. A few more days and sheā€™ll have her space back entirely. Her office will be hers again, new and improved.
But sheā€™s not ready to lose Raleigh.
The time he spends in her office grows shorter and shorter, and she hopes against hope that heā€™s intentionally drawing it out. She keeps the baked goods coming; today she got a half dozen doughnuts free after filling up her punch card. She tells Raleigh to take the rest when he goes; there are too many for just her and she refuses to share with the Hansens. Raleigh tells her he can share them with his team. She thinks they both know he wonā€™t.
Because Raleigh has spent a fair bit of time painting the new walls and ceiling this week, and Makoā€™s been gathering data every time he reaches above his head with the roller. His belly pooch has reached its tipping point, rolling an inch or two over his belt. She can see the shape of his stomach through his t-shirts now, can see the shadow of his navel and the push of his flesh against the fabric. He keeps tugging his shirts down, and Mako sits on her hands and pretends not to see and pretends not to know how this could have possibly happened.
And then one day he declares that heā€™s done, and he gives Mako a sad little smile and tells her he hopes heā€™ll see her around campus sometime, and he scrawls his number on a sticky note in case she needs anything else from facilities.
She tries to enjoy being alone in her office, she really does. She sets up her cat figurines around her new computer monitor and arranges her books on the new shelving. She returns her robots to their place of honor above her desk. And then she picks up the phone.
ā€œHey,ā€ says Raleigh when he picks up. She thinks she can detect a thread of delight in his voice. ā€œWhatā€™s up?ā€
ā€œItā€™s all the new outlets,ā€ she says. ā€œThey work fine, Iā€™m very happy with them. But I was wondering if you have one of those mats I could put over all the wires so no one trips.ā€
ā€œNo problem,ā€ says Raleigh. She thinks heā€™s smiling. ā€œIā€™ll come by later and drop one off.ā€
The next day Makoā€™s phone rings just as sheā€™s brewing her morning tea. ā€œHello?ā€
ā€œHey, itā€™s Raleigh. I think I might have left some tools in your ceiling. Okay if I come up and check?ā€
Makoā€™s heart backflips. ā€œYes. If you wait half an hour Iā€™ll have doughnuts to give you.ā€
Raleigh waits half an hour. Thereā€™s nothing in the ceiling.Ā
ā€œI could use an ethernet cable,ā€ she says as his mouth is full of roasted cherry. ā€œJust in case. Sometimes the Wi-Fi is spotty up here.ā€
ā€œYou got it,ā€ he says, and he comes back the next day with an ethernet cable.
ā€œHey,ā€ he says, leaning in the doorway with his hands in his pockets as she carefully coils the cable and stores it in her desk drawer. ā€œWeird question. I heard you on the phone one day while I was up here with my head in the ceiling ā€” you speak Japanese, right?ā€
She nods.Ā
ā€œWell, hereā€™s the thing,ā€ says Raleigh. ā€œIā€™m actually starting a Japanese class soon, and I could use a conversation partner, if you have time.ā€
ā€œThatā€™s lucky,ā€ says Mako. ā€œI could use a lunch partner.ā€
ā€œYeah,ā€ says Raleigh. His smile spreads all the way across her new office like sunlight. ā€œThat is lucky.ā€

HOO BOY I AM HAVING. A DAY.
so . last night after finishing the animation, literally like 2 hours later, my laptop shut off and would not reboot. would not even show the "i am plugged in" indicator light. switched outlets, nothing. figured maybe it overheated bc it used to do that, so i let it cool off, aaaand nothing. went to bed. woke up this morning, still dead.
turns out the motherboard is fried. it's way too expensive to replace, so... metallix is dead. thankfully the local pc repair guy is able to back everything up to my external drive, and in fact has done this before Last time i had a laptop with a suddenly-dead motherboard, but there's a high chance that i've lost some stuff... including all of my minecraft save data. all of my screenshots from the various servers ive been on, potentially all of the world downloads i had (i may have moved those to my external to free up space, i dont remember), but most importantly: the savefile i was using to record my series that i was planning to get back to once things were a bit less stressful irl and i had less projects.
(i also may have lost all of my davinci resolve projects. i dont know where that data is stored. that also stings, but if i have the artwork still-- which i should-- then i can redo them bc the wips were all in early sketch animatic stage.)
the good news: i am currently borrowing my mom's pc to be able to make this post, bc otherwise i've been on mobile all day and it is kind of killing me. better news: i have a backup laptop exactly for the purpose of "something has happened to my main one". less better news: that backup laptop got water damage a while ago and im only now getting it repaired. thankfully it can be repaired, and while its pricey its at least something i can cover.
im stressed out. today has been a bit of a mess between running back and forth between home and the pc guy, being super frazzled over money and what is and isnt worth trying to save, the terror of maybe not being able to save things, and praying that all of my art is recoverable (it should be).
so, uh, that's where i've been today.

they have to send my laptop in to get repaired. I was told that, even though I havenā€™t had this laptop for six months even, I might have to pay $299 if they detect any water damage. Absolute bullshit. but what can I do. I canā€™t get mad at the Genius Bar worker. Sheā€™s just doing her damn job.

Another short little comic!! <:D
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is a short little comic also based on a true story. My dad and I drove all the way to Bridgeport, Connecticut to go to a store called Money Talks Wireless owned by a guy named Ozzy. Ozzy is an extremely nice guy and personally, I feel like it's worth the hour and a half drive just to come and see him and Ice! (His Husky.) <:D Basically, last year, I was trying to earn money for a one week trip to The Cartoon Network Hotel in Lancaster, Pennsylvania with my Best Bro @kirbykid133. I did end up succeeding and we went on the trip together!! It was lots of fun!!! <:D But it wasn't easy...it took a whooooole lot of planning and effort...so, I went to Ozzy's shop in Connecticut. You may recognize him as the famous phone repairman and the "Don't Worry, I gotchu" guy over on YouTube. <:D I went there to try and sell a couple of things to him. Now, this comic has a couple of errors that I didn't quite get to fix. One is that I'm getting $100 for a phone in the comic. I had drawn this prior to the shop visit and instead of getting the money for that phone, I ended up trading it in to pay for my mom's OnePlus 10 Pro repair. It had gotten repaired due to water damage over there. However, I did end up getting money for some laptops that I didn't use anymore! So, it worked out!! :) After that, I saved as much money as I possibly could for the trip. Second, please excuse my terribly drawn Subaru car door. I know, I'm terrible with doors. šŸ˜… And third, please also excuse my crazed look in the middle panel. '0~0 If you knew exactly just how hard it was to save up for this trip, you'd understand... XD Anyways, that's my story! Enjoy!! <:D

12:36 PM
I finally got my ass out of bed. Today, Hurricane Beryl decided to make its way here. We have no electricity, so I have no idea when this will be posted.
At least I charged my laptop so I can at least write whatā€™s been going on. The back door suddenly opened from the wind. I ran over there to close and lock it. Figured my dad could just knock the shit out of the door when he needed to go in, but mom said to leave it unlocked and just make sure it was closed well. So, I did that. Then I told my cat he was a good boy for not running outside when the door was wide open. See, heā€™s a retired veteran from the outdoors. Usually, he would sprint the moment he sees his chance to relive his younger years but not this time. I take it the wind was too intimidating for him. I still called him a good boy for not running out.
My family got lucky. All weā€™re getting is high winds and no electricity. Some areas north and west of ours got flooding and worse damage. Donā€™t even want to think of the areas south of us. My far neighborā€™s tree got split in half with some of the branches on top of the car. Three small parts of the fence in our backyard got toppled down. Those wonā€™t be repaired until my parents come back from their trip. I can hear the rumble of a generator from a neighbor in another street. I wonder how they got their generator set up. It always powers on immediately when thereā€™s no power and off when there is. Iā€™ll ask my dad one day.
Currently, my mom is making homemade chili. We have a gas stove, so we can still cook food. We also have plenty of water. My family uses this water service this for our water dispenser thingy upstairs. They send several three-gallon things of water. I have some right now. My dad is working on our generator, wondering when my brother will get up. My mom is back to crocheting a shirt and my sis is reading this book on seeds. My cat is just laying on the floor all cute and stuff.
Iā€™m not gonna lie, it is a tad humid in here. Thankfully, the sun is covered by the clouds, so we arenā€™t dying of the heat, but we do have light to see.Ā  I do have a handheld fan that Iā€™ll grab in a second. That and more water since Iā€™m thirsty as fuck.
Off in the distance I hear someone using a chainsaw. Probably to cut down the tree branches they can cut off. Thatā€™s wild, to be honest. The wind is strong enough to push me aside like tumbleweed. I have to use force to push the door shut. Itā€™s not as bad as Harvey or Ike (I do recall with Ike that the wind being so strong I could see the wind punching the door partially open). But I know thereā€™s still others less fortunate out there than I.
Anyways, to better things.
Yesterday, I downloaded FFXIV Online. I downloaded the free trial. Definitely did not expect it to take over six hours to download, but it did. I spent all that time waiting watching YouTube videos from AstralSpiff and Chickeninja42. The moment everything was done downloading, I hopped on the game. I only got as far as character creation. Which is not far, to be honest. But I did finish the character! I customized her the same way as I do in every video game that I own that has character customization - white hair, red eyes, fair skin, and some muscle. Her hair had to pulled back. Funny enough, choosing the voice I wanted for her took longer than anything else. It was great having my sister helping me out though. Not that she plays the game, but I like having her input. If I have time and electricity, Iā€™ll put a picture of her below this paragraph.
[I am absolutely not in my computer to screenshot. RIP.]
I hope we get electricity back soon, but my gut tells me itā€™ll be a good while before it comes back. Maybe tomorrow morning. Will I even work tomorrow?
Eyyy, my brother finally made it downstairs. Iā€™ll take it as my cue to go write or do something else. Cause, to be honest, I can only type as long as this laptop battery will last me.
5:41 PM
Electricity isnā€™t back yet. Iā€™ve spent the last several hours napping my life away after I ate. For some reason the tiredness washed over me. Could keep my eyes open. So far, my phone is on 80% because I havenā€™t been using it. I need to remember to call my boyfriend later because I want to hear his voice. We wonā€™t be able to FaceTime today which sucks but thatā€™s okay. I need him to know that Iā€™m alright. I mean, he knows Iā€™m okay, but I want him to hear it out of my mouth.
The sky is blue. Like nothing ever happened. My mom stuck her tongue out at it.
I did finally wash my hair. I didnā€™t put conditioner, just leave-in. My lower back pain flared up which made me cut my wash time in half. Letā€™s see how long my hair lasts. For now, Iā€™ll just sit here and talk to my mom and sister.
7:10 PM
My dad and brother got the generator working. Itā€™s working upstairs for sure. Got my phone charging. I think theyā€™re trying to get the refrigerator and freezer to turn on. Iā€™m just saying, we can do without the TV. And we could just keep the power downstairs instead of both. I can sleep on the floor thatā€™s chill.
For now, my mom is going to find something for us to eat. I am going to try to cool down some more. All I want is to cool down. At least the A/C is on so the upstairs can cool down. Thereā€™s nothing much else to say.
I did talk to my boyfriend on the phone for a little bit, but the call dropped. It was nice hearing his voice. Heā€™s more freaked out than me, but in his defense, Iā€™m used to this.
Just talked to bro. He said the freezer and fridge are working. Heā€™s going to turn off the A/C because we donā€™t have enough gas. Thatā€™s cool, to be honest. We can survive the heat for a little while. It could always be worse. I have my handheld fan, itā€™ll be okay.
8:11 PM
WE GOT POWER BACK, BABY! Wifi isnā€™t working but honestly, I donā€™t care.
Iā€™d like to thank the hard workers who oversee the electricity shit because I know theyā€™ve been working nonstop. I also like to thank my boyfriend for being patient with me. Honestly, just give it up to the electricians who were working honestly all-day getting shit done.
Now, I have to be real, Iā€™m probably one of the lucky ones. While the storm was only during the day, thereā€™s probably still well over a million people without power. I hope they get theirs soon. For now, Iā€™m going to finally relax, maybe take a cup of decaf coffee, and continue playing minesweeper for the rest of the night. Hey, I might even get on YouTube. Iā€™ll see what Iā€™ll do.
Until next time,
Vivid Entropy
