fun new thing about my autism (not fun) is that I canât remember common phrases well enough. Like I canât remember the correct words/order. So Iâll mix up phrases like âas far as I can tellâ, âor so Iâve heardâ âfrom what I can tellâ and create new embarrassing versions of them that probably donât make sense

Represention of Autistic Frustration in Laios Dungeon Meshi
Like many other autistic people, I related strongly to Laios Touden while reading Dungeon Meshi. This post isn't going to spend time disputing whether he displays autistic traits or notâwhile I could do that, I want to focus on why specifically his portrayal struck a chord with me in a way the writing of most other autistic-coded characters has not.
Disclaimer: as the above suggests, this post is strongly informed by my own experiences as an autistic person, as well as the experiences of my neurodivergent friends with whom I have spoken about this subject. I want to clarify that in no way am I asserting my personal experience to be some Universal Autistic Experience. This post is about why Laios' character feels distinct and significant to me in regard to autistic representation, and while I'm at it, I do feel that I have interesting things to say about autistic representation in media generally. This also got a bit long, so I'm sticking it under a read more. Spoilers for up to the end of chapter 88 below.
The thing that stands out most to me in regard to Laios' characterisation is the open anger he displays when someone points out his inability to read other people. This comes up prominently in his interactions with "Shuro" (Toshiro Nakamoto):
The frustration pictured above (Laios continuing to physically tussle with Toshiro, using crude language toward him) becomes even more notable when you remember that this is Laios, who, outside of these interactions, is not easily fazed and often exists as a lighthearted contrast to the rest of the cast. Then we get to Laios' nightmare.
In Falin's words: "Nightmares love emotional wounds. Wounds you hold in your heart. Things that give you stress, or things that were traumatic for you. They aggravate memories like that and cause the dreamer to have terrible dreams." (chapter 42, page 10.) (damn. i'm properly citing for this post and everything.)
Thus, Laios' nightmare establishes an important fact: even if he is unable to recognise social blunders while he's making them, he's at least subconsciously aware that other people operate on a different wavelength to him, and that he's an outsider in many of his social circles (both past and present). His dream-father's disparaging words stress the impact this has had upon his ability to live up to the expectations set out for him, and we also get a panel of kids who smirk at him (presumably former bullies to some degree). Toshiro's appearance only hammers home how much Laios is still both humiliated and angered by his misunderstanding of their relationship.
I've thought a lot about anger as concomitant to the autistic experience. When autistic representation portrays ostracization, it's generally from an angle of the autistic character being upset at how conforming to neurotypical norms doesn't come easily to them; as a result, they express a desire to 'get better' at meeting neurotypical standards, a desire to become more 'normal' (whether the writing implies this is a good thing or not). In contrast, not once does Laios go, "I need to perform better in my social interactions, and try to care less about monsters, because that's what other people find weird." His frustration is directed outward rather than inward, and as a result, it's the people around him who are framed as nonsensical.
The Winged Lion starts delineating Laios' anger, and Laios' reaction is to think to himself, "It can sense all my thoughts, huh?" (chapter 88, page 16.) This is the scene that really resonated with me. I'm not saying I have never felt the desire to conform to neurotypical norms that is borne from insecurity, but primarily, I know that I don't want to work toward becoming 'normal'âI don't want to change myself for people who follow rules I find nonsensical. It's the difference between, "Oh god, why can't I get it," and, "WHY CAN'T YOU GET IT?" (phrasing here courtesy of my friend Miles @dogwoodbite). And for me personally, Dungeon Meshi is the first time I've seen this frustration and the resultant voluntary isolation from other people portrayed in media so candidly. Laios' anger is not downplayed or written to be easily palatable, either.
The culmination of Laios' frustrations in this scene wherein we learn that Laios has fantasised about "a pack of monsters attacking a village" drives home just how alienated he really feels. I need not go into his wish to become a monster himself, redolent of how many autistic people identify/have identified with non-humans to some degree as a result of a percieved disconnect from society (when I was younger, I wanted to be a robot. I still kind of do.)
Obviously, wishing death upon other people is a weighty thing, but the unfiltered nature of this page is what deeply resonated with me. The Winged Lion is laying Laios' deepest and most transgressive desires bare, and they are desires that are a product of lifelong ostracization by others (whether intentional or unintentional). This is the brand of anger I'm familiar with, and that my neurodivergent friends express being familiar with, but that I haven't seen portrayed in writing so explicitly beforeâin fact, it surprised me because most well-meaning autistic representation I've experienced veers toward infantilisation in trying make the autistic character's struggles easy for neurotypicals to sympathise with.
Let's also not neglect the symbolism inherent to Laios' daydream. "A pack of monsters attacking a village". Functionally, monsters are Laios' special interestâhe percieves everything first and foremost through his passion for monsters. His daydream of monsters attackingâkillingâhumans, is fundamentally a daydream of the world he understands (monsters) overthrowing the world that is so illogical to him, that has repeatedly shunned him (other people). I joked to my friends that it's an autistic power fantasy, and it actually sort of is. And in it, his identity is aligned with that of the monsters, while his anger manifests in a palpable dissociation from the rest of humanity. This is one manga page. It's brief. It's also very, very raw to me. I think about it often.
To conclude, I love Laios Dungeon Meshi. This portrayal of open frustration in an autistic character meant a lot to me, and I hope I've sufficiently outlined why. Also, feel free to recommend media with autistic representation in the notes if you've read this farâI would really like to see if there is more of this nature. Thank you for reading. I'm very tired and should probably sleep now.

PART ONE | TWO
You never settled your relationship with the summer season. To put it simply, it was a love and hate sort of thing; you liked that it was dry, and the air always felt like it was filtered and healthy even though you were well-aware of the current shit-state of the Earth's ozone layer. There were beams and sunlights and street vendors and people lying on the park's ground. Summer felt nostalgic, like the first time you bought a vinyl in highschool and listened to Fleetwood Mac in secret because your mom was certain they peddled cocaine and all sorts of illegal drugs, and with a highschool friend you no longer talk to, not because of a friendship-breaking betrayal but something more melancholic than that like drifting apart as you got older â the ambience, generally, was what you loved the most about it.
But regardless of those, summer got hot. Sure, you could forgo layers of clothing and it was always nice to lounge about in short bottoms and strapless tops and sandals, but at the end of the day, you needed to set your AC on the lowest temp, and it cranks up your monthly rent a greater percentage which causes a detrimental result to your monthly pay. (And you always had to reapply make-up every now and then whenever you went outside because if not, you'd be a sweating mess.)
In the grand scheme of things, though, there was nothing more than you disliked than Park Jimin, your best friend since college, asking you to be his plus-one on his mom's birthday dinner. For the second time.
âI told you, Jimin, Iâm not doing that anymore. Your mom called me fat and recommended a bunch of expensive skin care products to treat one single zit on the side of my forehead the last time you brought me there. I hid that with my bangs and she still saw it, like what the hell? The baked lasagna might have tasted good but Iâm not stepping one foot in your house ever again.â You spat out, rolling your eyes at your friend who just dramatically flopped himself on your bed.
âOkay, so Iâm really sorry about my mom. Sheâs aâŠâ He trailed off, looking at you with meaningful eyes that weighed words you knew he couldn't exactly say without feeling bad, and you sighed. Nodded in understanding. Jiminâs face contorted into a cringed expression at that. â... yeah. But! Please. I swear! This is the last time. I just really need you to be there. Theyâre setting me up with Heesu, okay? You know that snotty nepo baby of the Kang clan who owns Kang Tech?â
âJimin, youâre a nepo baby.â
He hit you with a pillow. âI am but I can earn a hundred thousand won without my familyâs money. They can cut my credit cards and I'll still be thriving.â
You broke the serious demeanor and laughed loudly at his seemingly confident claim.
âIâm sorry but you could not even get a job at a burger joint without some nepotism let alone have a hundred thousand without your dadâs credit cards. Bitch, youâre just lying.â
âFuck you. I was employee of the week at Seventh Street Burger.â He backfired, referring to that point in time in your sophomore year where you picked up a part time job during the summer at a burger joint and Jimin just decided to come along randomly. He got it because the owner knew of his dad.
âYeah, because Sowon had a crush on you?â You said, remembering the ownerâs daughter, who was also helping out at the store at that time. She was so smitten by Jimin you almost felt bad for her.
âOkay, fair, point taken. No need to be such a bitch about it,â Your best friend said with a dismissive wave of his hand, telling he was over it. You only laughed at that, boisterously, might you add, just to piss him off for no reason. Jimin deadpanned. âBut seriously. I think theyâre planning to marry me off to Heesu.â
Your face fell out of genuine concern this time.
âOh my god, really?â
Jimin once again cringed visibly. âYeah. I mean from a business lense it makes sense. But me marrying at 33? That makes me â like â a child groom.â
âOh⊠yeahâŠâ you trailed off, sympathizing with him. Not that you've ever been in the situation where your parents forced you in a sham marriage for their own wealth because there was no wealth to begin with. But you felt bad for Jimin. You always have, when it came to this particular subject.
You knew how it was with rich people, having known Jimin for almost half your life. It was true that arranged marriages were still a thing, and while Jimin seemed that he could pretty much do everything he wanted because of his free-spirited nature, his parents could still most likely make him marry someone he barely knew. Solely for business.
âUgh.â Jimin groaned. âShould I just come out at the dinner so they can stop linking me to women? Iâm gay as fuck, man. My cousin Park Youngdam would have a field day given that homophobic fucktard has been calling me the f word ever since he learned it in seventh grade.â
You shook your head, visibly cringing at his words. You didn't have family yourself. It was your mom who raised you alone for all your life, until she died five years ago. Didn't know any extended family. But frankly, you thought it was better that way than to deal with a complicated family like Jimin's.
âNah. I mean if youâre ready, well, do it. But like, your parents areâŠâ You two shared a look together again, and Jimin just slapped his palms over his face, indicating his doom. Your face twisted with another shot of deeper sympathy for him.
âThis is it for me. Theyâll marry me off to Kang Heesu and weâll fly to the US and live in Massachusetts to fulfill her white picket fence fantasy. Iâll be a miserable husband and she'll be an even more miserable wife because sheâll eventually find out Iâm gay. The neighbors will start talking and the white republicans will shun me out of the town church. Weâll have a surrogate baby andââ
âJimin, what the fuck!â You hit him hard on his arm as you couldn't keep a straight face anymore at his dramatic monologue. âYouâre not gonna marry Heesu and you won't live in fuckass Massachusetts and no oneâs gonna shun you out of the town church and you won't have a surrogate baby.â
âItâs a possibility.â Jimin shrugged.
âI feel like you're guilt-tripping me into agreeing to be your date again at your mom's birthday dinner and I think that's very evil of you.â You said, squinting your eyes at him.
âWell, duh? But also, Iâm really kind of lowkey highkey scared theyâll marry me off to someone now that Iâm pushing forty.â
"You're quite literally seven years away from forty." You countered.
He looked at you with an expression of I know right! And he told you so.
"That's what I said to mom and dad, but they're acting like my sperm will freeze next year. God, I can't stand them!"Â
Jimin, for all his jokes and unserious and bitchy behavior, was someone extremely important to you. Yeah, sure, he was rich as hell and he annoys you when he says something that reeks of too much nepotism but he was never intentionally snotty, never thinks he was better than everyone else (Jokes about how he thinks he has the fattest and juiciest ass in the world, though), and he wasn't at all like the rich people you've had the misfortune of interacting with at his mom's birthday party last year. He might be a self-proclaimed bitch but if you put him together with those people, he might as well be one of God's disciples.
For all his crass language and rather strong personality, Jimin was a doting friend who was there for you every single time. You could call him up at 3 am and heâd be at your door bringing Chinese take out and two tubs of ice cream, ready to hear you vent about your stupid job or a guy that you fumbled by being weird and off-putting because you didn't know how to handle a relationship. He was the kind of friend who would defend you in front of anyone else but will mercilessly tell you off and list down all points of your stupidity once you were in closed doors. He was the kind of friend that would ask you to be his pretend partner at a birthday dinner party, but he was your best friend ultimately and even if you had a big problem with his family and their extremely traditional (read: toxic) ways, you didn't want him to be pressured into coming out just so he could avoid to be engaged off to another random heiress. Didn't want him to do something he wasn't ready for. Didn't want him hurt or anything of the sort.
The last dinner wasn't even that bad, if you were to be honest. His parents were shitty, yeah sure, and the other guys in there that consisted of politicians and businessmen and people in the showbiz industry were something taken out of the toilet bowl for how stinky their elitist, better-than-you personalities were, but you both just totally forgot all about it by getting wasted at the local bar right after leaving. Not that his momâs words didn't sting a bit or didn't make you a little conscious, but at the end of the day, you weren't actually dating Jimin so you didn't care what his parents thought of you.
Additionally, you didn't have something planned for the next two weeks when the birthday would be happening. You were supposed to, but that ship has long sailed when you fumbled a date with the guy at the IT department. For the record, you didn't really like him that much and he talked too much about his job and while you didn't mind that, it was getting a little too tiring. If you wanted IT lessons you wouldâve majored in it in college. Still, Shin Taemu was handsome. And he wore those rounded glasses. Was tall. Had nice arms. Too bad he wanted to be the next Mark Zuckerberg. Fuck that guy.
âUgh, I don't know,â you groaned. âIt's just so disgusting to be your girlfriend, okay?â
Jimin audibly gasped. âHow dare you? A lot would jump on this ass.â He said with incredulity seeping through his voice, pointing to his bum.
You rolled your eyes. âNot me, obviously. Before you take offenseââ
âOffense taken.â
ââitâs just that you're like my cousin and when you call me honey I want to crawl out of my own skin.â
Jimin laughed at that while you looked miserable, remembering those moments from last year. Seriously, how could you have fooled anyone in that party that you were banging? You swore you looked like Ariana Grande and Troye Sivan in that one music video? (Jimin was the one who showed that meme to you, by the way.)
âSo I won't call you honey. Just babe.â
âEw.â You quickly retaliated.
âOhh, the homophobia is sho-wing.â Jimin sing-sang, ever the mature individual he was.
âFuck off, seriously.â
Jimin just giggled and then scooted closer to you. âNo but like, are you coming? âCause jokes aside, I'm just gonna find someone else if you really don't wanna do it. But you know you're always my first choice.â
âFirst choice when you do some stupid shit.â you countered, rolling your eyes for the nth time that night. Jimin would be the cause of your eye surgery if ever they got dislocated or something.
âThatâs my biggest act of love.â
âI don't want it.â
âIâll double what I paid you last year.â
âDouble it again and give it to the next person?â
Jimin flipped you off. âIâll give you my nintendo and Iâll get you a card at that coffee shop you love so much.â
That caught your attention. You raised your brow. âOn god?â
âWhen did I ever lie to you?â
You deadpanned. âWe won't finish this conversation if I list all the timesââ
âOkay, okay, point taken. But I'm really serious. Please, please, please, please be my pretend girlfriend on my mom's birthday party please, pleaseââ
âShut up. Ugh,â you could already feel the big smile creeping up Jiminâs face when you let out a big sigh. âOkay, Iâll do it. Buy me boba now.â
Jimin tackled you to the bed and hugged you and kissed your forehead.
âThank you! Best best friend ever.â he delightfully said, grinning widely, eyes almost disappearing in his triumph.
Your face contorted into a disgusted expression while Jimin just laughed as you pushed him so hard he almost fell off the bed.
âYou are a disgusting limpy sack of dicks! Also, Iâm not your best best friend, you don't have a wide selection. I'm your best friend. Period.â
âUnfortunately.â He waved you off and when you were about to retort something his phone suddenly rang. You watched quietly as he put it over his ear. âHey, you just landed?â
If it was a private conversation Jimin would've left the room but since he didn't, you decided to stay in bed, kind of listening in to the conversation, but also not, as you turned the volume down of the show you were watching earlier on your laptop.
âNah, you want me to pick you up?â Jimin sat up on the edge of the bed and you looked at him curiously. âSure, Iâm free, Kook. You have a place to stay? Hotel suite or something?â He nodded to whatever the other person was saying on the other line. âOh, you're here for three months? Thought you were just flying in for mom's birthday?â
It was moments after they said goodbye that Jimin turned to you to ask, âWell, my cousinâs apparently staying here for three months. Got this job thing going on.â
âIs that one of the non-problematic twenty percent cousin lineage of your very complicated family tree?" You asked, referring to him telling you one time that his family, including the extended ones, was eighty percent shitty and twenty percent decent.
Jimin chuckled at the inside joke. "Well, yeah, he's one of the good ones. Knows I'm gay."
"Oh, nice."
Jimin stood up from your bed. âIâll get you your boba and head off. Gotta pick cousin up or heâll start throwing tantrums at the airport.â
âAdd extra pearls please.â You told him, watching as he clicked away on his phone to get you your drink.
âI spoil you too much.â Jimin said, clicking his tongue, eyes still on his phone.
âWhat are you here for if not my glorified sugar daddy?â
âI will kill myself in front of you.â Jimin deadpanned, getting a chuckle out of you.
You didn't know the psychology â or if there even was psychology â behind feeling embarrassed when you were about to cross a path while carrying huge boxes. It was a normal task, and yet, it always felt like a huge walk of shame when you did it.
It was probably because you had to carry it over a flight of stairs, and there was no way you wouldn't trip on yourself carrying two heavy boxes in your hands that were already disrupting your vision.
Maybe it was your fault for choosing the pick-up option when you were checking out these furniture online, all because there was a huge increase on the fee for door-to-door delivery. For the record, there was a huge gap and the boxes were not really that heavy to the point you could not carry them both. It's just a lamp and a portable desk, you thought a week ago when you opted for the pick-up option, I could carry it all the way to the unit just fine â and obviously, your delusion has resulted to this very moment.
As soon as you managed to walk over five steps, you felt as if your oxygen supply just got cut back, panting like someone fresh from a marathon. Damn. You definitely needed to work out a little. Maybe do some squats for your New Yearâs resolution, commit to it for three days straight then forget about it for the next 362 days of the year.
You looked ahead of you and a string of curses let themselves out of your mouth automatically as you estimated the number of stairs you needed to get through to get to your apartment.
This day sucked! It was Sunday and you planned to wake up at five am to have a productive day but then you slept through your five alarms and woke up at eleven am instead. You ran out of eggs and you had to go to the convenience store to eat a sad meal of yogurt and kimbap. And now there were these boxes that you needed to carry over what seemed to look like six million of stairs. You weren't Sisyphus! And where were your goddamn neighbors when you needed them?
"You need help, ma'am?"
"Jesus Christâ" you turned to look to your right only to see a man who seemed to own the previous voice.
And Jesus Christ, indeed.
He was wearing a white shirt and some shorts, Nike sliders on his feet and a pair of headphones on. He was wearing glasses. And he had a tattoo sleeve.
What the fuck.
What the fuck!
It has been so long since you thought a man was crazily attractive. Okay, well sure, the guys from the IT department were something else (or you just had a weird eyeglasses fetish, Jimin once pointed out, that you still â to this day â vehemently try to deny) but youâve never been this taken aback by someoneâs face before.
The guyâs lips tilted a bit, some sort of greeting maybe, and you quickly looked away, embarrassed, fearing that he caught you looking at him longer than necessary.
Oh god. This was pathetic! He was a stranger! He was a man! He just had a cute face attached to a very good body with an arm full of tattoos and he was tall but you were sure he wasnât six feet two. Also, he had hair that looked fluffy from where you stood and a pair of eyeglasses but Jimin was just bluffing when he said you had a fetish for them. Right?
You were performing mental gymnastics until you realized he was asking a question.
"Oh! Uh, no, thank you. It's fine." You said, embarrassed at the way you almost jumped in surprise earlier.
But the whole thing was ridiculous. What, because there was a very fine man across from you the universe suddenly decided to fuck up your fate by making you be seen by that very man struggling with boxes all the way up to your unit? Couldn't it just have been on a day when you did your make-up and dressed up in that overpriced dress you bought hundred bad choices ago?
You fumbled with the boxes a little bit before continuing your way up, nevermind the guy whose response you didn't wait for because you needed to get the fuck away from him before you say something weird and off-putting.
Truthfully, you could use the help. But at what cost? A fine man carrying them? Okay, that wasnât so bad. But what were you supposed to do with... all of that?
As if the universe was indeed trying to prove to you that you were, in fact, not its favorite creation, you almost tripped. And the guy most definitely saw it.
Fuck.
You turned to the side to see him looking at you, concern etching his face. You wanted to convince yourself that it was genuine concern because you'd commit something that would totally change the trajectory of his life if he was to laugh.
But you thought his own unit must be way up as well, as he was going to the same path as you, and if that was the case, he must have been a new neighbor in the complex because you've never seen the man before.
âWell, itâs not that heavy butâŠâ you trailed off, looking blankly at the cardboard boxes. And then at him. "I could use some help, if you don't mind."
The guy just chuckled. Oh wow, his laugh was very... low.
You didnât even know what the fuck that meant.
âIâll get them for you.â He said, crossing the small distance between you and taking over the pile, leaving you with nothing in your hands.
âOh, no, Iâll have that one. Itâs fine.â You said, stepping closer to take the other one but he was already securing it in his hold, with stability this time, ready to take off.
He let out a small laugh again and you bit your tongue to not think about how cute he looked. If he was a new tenant, you hoped you didn't cross paths with him ever again.
"It's okay, ma'am."
He's got to stop calling you that before you do something drastic.
âItâs quite far from here, I'm all the way up to three-three-six.â You uttered, pointing forward, a few steps behind the guy, who hummed at what you said.
You quickly caught up to him. "Really, thanks for doing this."
"No problem, it's nothing." He said, smiling at you. Warm and kind. All cute. "I'm all the way up to four-four-six as well."
Your eyes widened. "No way, that's just across mine."
The stranger, apparently your neighbor now, grinned.
"Nice coincidence, huh?"
A sheepish smile formed on your lips. You didn't dwell on that comment too much. Knew it was just small talk.
"If you don't mind me asking, are you a new tenant here?â You asked out of genuine curiosity. You had never seen someone come out of the unit across from you out of all the four years you'd been here.
He nodded, agreeing with what you presumed.
"Yeah. Just temporary, though.â
âOhâŠâ A surprised sound. Maybe it was a good thing he was only staying temporarily... âI hope I didnât inconvenience you or anything. You really donât need to bring the boxes over to my apartment.â
The man just chuckled, dismissing your worry. âYou looked like you could use a hand, these boxes are big. Anyway, I was just out checking 'round town. Settling in.â
From the sound of it, you'd assume he was not only moving in in a new apartment complex, but new city as well. Perhaps country? But he most definitely looked Korean. But maybe he came from abroad. Who knows.
âYeah, there's a really nice coffee shop three blocks away. You should check it out sometime. Jiâmy friend and I are obsessed with their iced caramel macchiato. And the boba.â
His brows furrowed in pure interest. âThat must've been the one I passed by this morning. Iâll make sure to try that one.â
âYou really should. And the barista gives you a brownie on Sundays if he likes you.â You shared like it was gossip, mentally taking note to visit the cafe sometime this week.
âAnd I'm sure not everybody gets the privilege?â The guy looked at you funny, and that made you laugh.
"Of course, yes! You have to earn it, I think. I feel like I spent over a million there before he started giving me brownies."
"Hope my charm works on him as well," he said, and it caught you off guard.
What did he mean, "as well"? Like he was speaking from the basis that you had charm and so he hoped he had it as well to get the barista to like him?
"Well. He's strict." Was all you could say, before you spotted your apartment. "Hey, I'll take it over from here."
The guy looked over the plated number on the door, reading three-three-six just as you said earlier. Trudging forward, he set the boxes down on the side of the porch.
"Thank you, really. This was really nice of you."
You extended your gratitude once again as if you didn't spend the walk up to here thanking him non-stop, sounding like a broken record. Thank god the guy didn't seem to mind your over-the-top gratitude, only waving his hand.
"Told you, it's fine. You need help with a few boxes again and just ring me up across," He joked, turning around slightly and looking at the door across your unit, Unit 446. It earned a chuckle from you. His face turned serious now, but there was still a charming smile on his face. âHey. Iâm actually pretty new in this town. I was thinking about visiting a few restaurants downtown, maybe you could recommend me some?â
You didn't mean to, but you took note the way his doe eyes seemed to shimmer even behind the frame of his glasses.
âMy favorites are just, like, a ten-minute walk away. Thereâs this restobar near that drugstore when you turn left from this building, right?â The guy nodded, and you were slightly delighted he knew right away. âYeah, their ramen's great, you'd thank me forever.â
He chuckled at the way you said it and you smiled.
Your interactions with new people were always a range from pure silence to oversharing; talking to them like they were your long lost friend whom youâve milked goats with in your fatherâs orchard. It was probably just a product of introversion; not knowing the right approach to socializing.
âThanks for the recommendation.â He said, a genuine appreciative tone lacing his words.
âYouâre welcome. If I can ring you up to help me with some boxes, you can ring me up for some restaurant recommendation.â
"It's an exchange, then. Deal."
"Why not?" You shrugged, laughing along with him when he did so.
You both stood there for a while until seconds passed. You didnât know exactly how to end the conversation, not that you wanted to, but there was nothing that went to your head to talk about more. And besides, he was probably headed somewhere, so you began to speak.
âHey, so Iâm going inââ
âWhat about weââ
âOh.â You stopped. âSorry, what was that?â
The guy just shook his head. âNah, youâre probably busy. Thanks for the recommendation again.â
âNo, seriously, sorry I didn't hear it the first time...â
âI was just gonna ask about the name of the restaurant.â
âItâs Midday Miso.â You told him, smiling.
âMidday Miso,â The guy nodded, âYeah. Got it. Thanks again.â
âYouâre welcome, and, uh, thanks. For the help.â
You took your keys out from your shorts and you didnât expect to still see him standing in front of you when you turned around. You jokingly squinted your eyes at him.
âYeah, you first, get in.â He said with a low chuckle.
It was a little embarrassing and pretty stupid how your heart fluttered a bit at that.
âWhat a gentleman you are,â You respond with a snort, opening the door to your unit and pushing the boxes inside your apartment. When they were in, you turned to look at the guy again, saying, âOkay, bye for real. See you around. Hope you like Midday Miso if you try it. And the coffee shop. It's called Brown Coffee.â
âSee you around.â He did a little wave that made you both laugh before you closed the door.
When the lock system clicked, you stood on your doorway for a little while.
And then fake-cried.
You quickly clicked on Jimin's pinned contact on your phone.

There must be a time where you finally grow up and learn to cook.
You were a twenty-eight-year-old woman and yet, your meals sadly ranged from instant noodles, canned goods, and food from the nearby twenty-four-hour provision shop. Sometimes, you had the gall to cook something from scratchâbut with scratch you meant scratching off the labels from food take-outs and reheating them in your microwave.
Jimin had told you one time you would die at twenty-nine with your lifestyle. You told him he couldn't tell you shit because he didn't know how to cook either, he just worked out and ate healthy stuff, and you did, too! But Jimin knew you, and in an evil manner, clocked you with, "Buying fresh produce and not consuming them does not count as healthy living."
Anyway, you never understood why you were so bad at cooking. Your mother, as you remembered her, was decent at it but you guessed it was because she never really taught you and you never really bothered, either. In some immature way of thinking, you'd like to think it was a win for feminism as you were battling patriarchal standards by not conforming to stereotypical "female" qualities. But deep inside, you knew cooking should be a survival skill.
Well, maybe Jimin was right and you would indeed die at the ripe age of twenty-nine. On the bright side, at least you wouldn't have to pay off your student loans and your monthly rent.
In relation, not knowing how to cook meant impractical visits to the restaurant, and that was how you ended up at Midday Miso for dinner after your shift.
It was only a little over seven pm when you entered the restaurant, the ahjumma quickly greeting you and preparing your usual, a sign of familiarity that implied your countless visits ever since moving in at your current apartment building.
Regular visits meant usual sitting spot, and in your case, it was the high stools that faced the glass walls of the restaurant's facade where you could see the busy street making that little area of the town alive.
As minutes overlapped with one another, your food was served and you were hit with the waft of the restaurant's delightful signature beef ramen and bibimbap that the ahjumma made sure to add extra beef on.
Eating with a happy heart made you feel like nothing in the world mattered but you and the food before you, so, you didn't pay attention to the person who was coming to your direction and eventually sat beside you, but what caught you off guard was when said person suddenly said,
"Hi."
When you turned to the side to see who it was, your eyes widened as you said in both recognition and surprise, "Unit 446?"
"That's me." He, Unit 446âin the fleshâsaid with a low chuckle, twisting himself so that he was sat appropriately on the high stool. Still, his body leaned towards you when he continued to say, "Fancy seeing you here."
You grinned, flattered at the casualness of his approach.
"Same to you. I wonder who told you about this local gem."
He pursed his lips. "A nice neighbor across my place... whom I still don't know the name of."
"Oh, shoot!" You'd face-palm right now if he wasn't looking, but truthfully, you didn't even think about that! You've just been referring to him as the Staircase Guy slash Neighbor 446 in your head and when you told Jimin about him. You laughed at the thought. "That neighbor of yours is __."
Neighbor 446 nodded and extended his hand to you
"I'm Jungkook."
It was a little silly but you shook hands, anyway, and knowing it was, indeed, silly, you both laughed together at your joint connection.
Jungkook. Huh. Not exactly a common Korean name, but it wasn't rare either. The name does ring a bell though, felt like you've heard it somewhere before.
You brushed off the familiarity as inconsequential.
Unlike the completely casual attire he adorned the first time that you met him, he was now in some sleek slacks and a white polo which sleeves were ridden up half high, which exposed the vines of ink on his right arm once again. There's a coat that hung around the back of his chair, and he had forgone the glasses this time around, which was a bit of a shame on the part of your brain that might have a silly crush on him.
Jungkook's clothes seemed to mirror your own business casual ensemble, and that made you think about what he possibly did for a living. Maybe he worked a corporate job just like you, and the prospect might have made you down a littleâonly because as far as you were concerned, corporate people weren't the most pleasant people you could encounterâbut it was not something you dwelled on too much because you couldn't care less. If Jungkook was corporate, he sure didn't seem to be one the way he was.
Besides, you wouldn't be the one to bring up the depressing and aggravating conversation about gross grown-up things like... jobs... Eurgh. You both could just talk about the weather or how insane the ahjumma's ramen tasted for eternity.
"Well, hello, Jungkook." You greeted him. All warm and soft, testing the syllables of his name on your tongue. Rolled off well enough. He had a nice name that sure fit his face for some reason.
"Hi, __." He mirrored the soft smile on your lips, and just as he said it, the ahjumma was heading towards your direction to give him his order.
In that usual way grandmas reacted, the ahjumma gasped audiblyâand dramatically, might you addâupon seeing Jungkook, but what she said next made you want to dig a hole under your seat.
"__-dear! Is this young man your boyfriend?"
Good thing you weren't consuming anything as of that moment, because it would've entered the wrong track.
"Ahjumma!" You laughed, totally not authentic at all because your face didn't match it, looking at Jungkook who just sent a shy smile her way.
Ahjumma must have seen you both talking to each other and had completely jumped to a conclusion. An insane one at that!Â
Shaking your head, you clarified, "This is Jungkook. A friend. He's new in town and checking out all the stuff around here. I recommended him this place."
You saw Jungkook nodding along with your words while he helped her set his table.
The ahjumma just shook her head. "I apologize, then," She looked at Jungkook and as if gossiping with him, whispered in a not very subtle way, "I keep on telling this girl to date already! Such young beauty shouldn't be wasted, you know."
A tsk-ing sound made its way through her mouth, and as much as you were starting to feel embarrassed that she was telling on you on Jungkookâwho was literally a stranger to you a day ago and whom you may have a teeny tiny bit of crush onâyou knew ahjumma did not have any malicious intent and just chose to laugh the whole thing off.
You heard Jungkook do the same.
This was ridiculous.
"Ahjumma, I told you, you're gonna be the first one to know when I date. For now I'm just a part-time accountant and a full-time promoter of Midday Miso." You pout at her, trying to dodge the topic of romance altogether.
Not in front of Jungkook.
"Ayee," She gave you a side-eye. "Fine. I'll bring over some extra beef."
You mouthed an enthusiastic "yes!" and raised your fist in the air with excitement, and Jungkook looked at the interaction with a smile on his face.
As the ahjumma walked away, you looked over at him.
"I'm glad you came byâ" You identified his order to be the same one you used to be obsessed with the first few months you came to the restaurant. "âand ordered their best seller. You sure know how to be a tourist."
"Looked good on the menu. The ahjumma also seems to be nice. Seems like she's a close friend, huh?" Jungkook said.
"Totally."
And it was the truth. There was just something about ahjumma that made you feel reminiscent about the grandmother you've never had. Ever since you moved in and became a regular at this place, it felt like she's taken care of you and your relationship had been special since.
"This is really good." Jungkook commented after having his second bite, and you nodded in agreement. "She was serious about the beef thing?"
You chuckled at the mention. "Yeah, she always gives me extra."
"You just always get free stuff around these areas?" Jungkook joked which earned a hearty laugh from you. You remembered telling him about the free brownie on Sundays at Brown Coffee, a little bit surprised he recalled that.
"Now that you said that, I actually do." You proudly shared. You've been in this town for so long that the various faces just went from familiar to friends.
Jungkook nodded, his face showing amusement.
"I have to learn your ways, then."
"The secret to that is be incompetent at cooking. It means it's either take-out or eat out. Business owners around here have no choice but to see me every three days because I can't cook my own meal."
You could see Jungkook's amusement growing every second, and to add faux insult to injury, he joked, "Oh, bummer."
You decided to ride along with that.
"You mean you're a good cook? That's the real bummer! And here I thought we were bonding." You said, purposefully trying to sound scandalous at his implication of being a good cook.
He shook his head instantly, chuckling. "Okay, nah. I'm not that good. Just decent. But I'll have you know I can make a mean tangsuyuk. Any other complicated stuff is out the window, so there, we are bonding."
"I appreciate that you're under the assumption that I know where to begin with the non-complicated stuff. You're already putting way too much faith in me."
"I seriously doubt that." Jungkook laughed once again.
"You know what my friend tells me? That I'd die at twenty-nine because I don't know how to cook."
Jungkook almost keeled over hearing you say the words, and as much as you were amused at his own amusement, you decided to further add on the joke because you were enjoying this way too much.
"Wow. I wouldn't doubt you'd be an accessory to my murder the way you're laughing way too hard at my impending death. That's next year, you know."
Jungkook reached over for the glass of water and drank it. While he did so, the ahjumma had come over to give you the beef she promised. You did not forgot to thank her as soon as she went away.Â
You did hope Jungkook didn't notice the malicious wink she sent your way.
"Fuck, sorry." Jungkook's laughter had gone down this time, but his eyes still showed a hint of mirth when he asked, "You're twenty-eight, then?"
You nodded. "Yep." Unfortunately, you thought.
"Oh, that's actually surprising."
A gasp left your mouth. Jungkook was quick to correct himself.
"I meant it's surprising because I thought you were way younger."
Oh.
"Don't flatter me. I won't share my extra beef with you."
"I thoughtâ" He shrugged. "âEarly twenties."
"I'm guessing you are in your early twenties." You joked back.
"Okay, now, don't flatter me. I know how old I look." Jungkook said with a dismissive tone, but nevertheless light-hearted. Just like how this whole thing was going.
God, you were so in awe of how good he was at talking to you that he was practically bringing out the extrovert in you you only ever show to exclusive people like Jimin.
"So, you're like, fifty, then?"
Incredulous, Jungkook burst into laughter. "Wow."
"Sorry, just that you sounded like you were five years from retirement! Anyway, you look like we're the same age?"
He shook his head. "Three years older. Turning thirty-one later this year."
Jaw dropped. Not physically, but mentally.
"Oh wow, you're basicallyâ"Â a fucking DILF! What the hell!
Thankfully you managed to cut yourself off before Jungkook could think you were way off your rocks and embarrass yourself in front of him for eternity. You could just hear Jimin from miles away telling you off about calling thirty-year-old men DILFs even though you didn't know if they had a child.
What do you mean this guy was thirty and why did that just make him even hotter in your head... He's got to stop this madness before you do something completely incomprehensible.
"âA senior." Was the lame thing you came up with to finish your sentence.
"Ouch." Jungkook said, but his word was completely opposite to the expression he was wearing on his face the way he just couldn't suppress the grin that had been visible on his mouth since you started talking.
You brought your hands up.
"Totally didn't mean that in a negative way."
Which was the entire truth. So far, the things you knew about him was that he had tattoos, a nice body, a nice personality, good ass freaking conversationalist, and that he was thirty! Thirty! As in, the peak of male hotness. The evil psychological concept of most men only getting hotter as they age.
"I'm sure, I'm sure," Jungkok nodded. "By the way, are you heading out after this?"
"Oh, yeah. Don't have anywhere else to go. I have a nine A.M tomorrow so..." you shrugged, and he nodded in understanding.
"You work as an accountant, right, from what you told the ahjumma?" Jungkook asked you curiously.
"Yeah... it's a very tedious job." You grimaced a little bit. "What about you?"
He tilted his head a bit, picking up a dumpling on his plate. "I'm a software engineer."
"Oh, that's cool."
You nodded to yourself while you processed what he said.
Works in fucking tech;Â another thing you just learned about him.Â
You weren't actively seeking out guys in tech, but why did they seem to come to you voluntarily? God forbid you saw someone who wasn't in there! Was every man working in tech now? Was Jimin really only being truthful when he said they were exactly your type?
"Have you made any software or is that, like, a wrong assumption about you guys?"
Jungkook merely chuckled at your retort.
"Not entirely, no. I've designed a few software in collegeâI'm still doing it. I'm just currently doing more business stuff now." He gave you a sheepish smile. "You?"
"Well, it's just... you knowâI actually work at a tech company. I'm a junior accountant. And, uh, nothing interesting, really. You get to do cool math like programming, and I get to do boring math like calculating money I don't have. It's always a great day at work." You said, couldn't help the laugh that skipped your mouth at your own sarcasm.
Nothing like joking about hating your job to someone who you just met yesterday.
"Programming and coding are not all that, either. It's tedious and... it's just a really boring job. But... it all pays the bills."
You chuckled.
"Yeah. Totally."
Without minding it, you raised the small glass of soju, initiating a toast, one that Jungkook understood immediately and met you in the middle of it.
The night was still you when you walked out of Midday Miso, but unlike any other nights, it was with Jungkook this time walking beside you.
"So you justâwhatâhid him for three months?"
"Well, yes! I wasn't about to get a notice for that! And besides, he was really cute. But he's in good hands now, his owner still sends me pictures of him. He's very grown and big."
"That's insane."
You peered at Jungkook who watched you in awe as you told him about the story of Alfredo, the cat whom you rescued on your way home from work a year ago. The landlady obviously had her fair share of rules and regulations in her building, and keeping pets was an absolute no, which was a shame. Definitely wasn't a shame when you first just moved in the complex, but things got lonely sometimes when you were living alone and company was almost a luxury.
Anyway, as told, you managed to keep Alfredo out of the landlady's sight until you found a highly qualified parent on some online forum who you still kept in contact with to this day.
But as you watched Jungkook, you noticed the way his expression fell into something concerning. He looked worried, which made you feel the same way as a result.
"What are you thinking?" You asked him curiously.
"Oh, nah, I was just... thinking. See, I actually have a dog."
"Oh!" You looked at him wide-eyed.
He has a dog;Â another thing about Jungkook that would qualify him on the regular rounds of hot boy of the month on Twitter dot com.Â
"Yeah."
"You didn't read the terms and conditions of the building?" Your eyebrows formed a concerned expression.
Jungkook chuckled and shook his head. "I did. I justâsuddenly thought about him, is all. He's being taken care of some place. But, you know, I missed him, and I was thinking about getting him here and showing him around my new place and all that."
"Oh... that's a bummer, then. The landlady's strict, even with the small dogs, can you imagine? Is he small, by the way, your dog?
"He's a Doberman, so definitely a big one."
"He must be really cute. What's his name?"
"Bam." He smiled at you, and you could totally see the pride showing on his face at the mention of his dog. And with a tone that you could only identify as someone who's suppressing his enthusiasm a little bit, he added, "You wanna see a picture of him?"
"Sure!"
Jungkook took out his phone from his pocket and showed you images of a big, chocolate brown dog. Bam definitely wasn't like the other regular Dobermans you'd see around. His ears weren't cropped, and his tail wasn't docked either. You didn't know if the lack of surgery was intentional from his side, but you'd like to think he kept it that way because he knew it hurt the dog greatly. From how you've been knowing him, you were certain he just didn't want to put his dog under unnecessary pain, which was honestly heartwarming to think about.
Jungkook was becoming way too good to be true in you head little by little.
"Awe, he's adorable!" You cooed, especially when he swiped through the picture of his pet, Bam, as a pup in what seemed to be Jungkook's arms based on the familiar tattoos that peeked from the exposed arm as seen on the picture. The tattoos also seemed to be new at that time as well, considering that the skin was still yet to be fully covered like now.
"I'm flattered you think that."
"Where is he, by the way? If you don't mind me asking."
"He's at a... friend's place in New York. He's not very good at flying so I didn't bring him with me here, and I thought, I'll only be here for three months, anyway, so." Jungkook shrugged.
Three months. Well. He did say he was only staying here temporarily.
You nodded. "For business, right?"
"Yeah, yeah."
"You grew up there?" You kicked the stone that was caught at the tip of your shoe, putting your fists in the deeper part of your coat's pockets. Summer may be hot during daytime, but it sure as hell was cold on nights like these.
"Nah, I'm from Busan. Flew to California for college and have been there since. Until now, that is."
Jimin was also from Busan, you thought. Though he said they only lived there for a few years until his parents moved to Seoul, but he made sure to visit his hometown every now and then. Most of the time, he made you come with him which you never had complaints about. You lived in the city all your life so going there, especially in the more urbanized area where you and Jimin stayed. Felt like fresh airâwhich Busan had, quite literally.
"My best friend's from Busan too."
"Really? What about you?"
You chuckled before answering, "I, unfortunately, did not come from any interesting place. Born and raised in Seoul, through and through. Though my mom told me she lived in Daegu for many years prior to having me."
"Seoul is an interesting place, though."
"Eh. It's okay." You shrugged, and your nonchalance made you both laugh.
The walk to your apartment building from Midday Miso was not that far. Still, it was five blocks away and while you and Jungkook were currently sharing conversation together and seemingly walking the same path, you weren't sure if you were both walking together there.
As if he read your mind, he suddenly spoke after a few minutes of comfortable silence.
"You mind if we walk together to the building?"
You decided to joke to get the jittery feeling out of your system.
"Scared of the dark, Jungkook?"
"Sure... my five-eleven self is."
You squinted your eyes at him. He did not just go there!
"Is that a slight against my height because I'm five-seven, mind you."
Jungkook stopped in his tracks which made you do the same, and you watched as he put his hand on his waist while the other reach up to his face to place a finger over his chin, seemingly assessing you up and down. You looked at him incredulously.
"You're bumping your height to two inches." He seriously said.
You gasped audibly.
"Oh, shut up,"
You rolled your eyes and turned your back at him, continuing your walk as you heard him behind you bursting in laughter at your reaction.
"I'm kidding!"
You first met Jimin at a college party. He was five years older than you, supposedly out of college by the time you attended, but he always had a problem with rebellionâwhat with his ragged relationship with his parents, he would intentionally flunk his courses as a message to them that he'd always be a black sheep and a proud one at that, hoping it would be enough to convey that they could not force him to be the heir of their company. (Obviously, it had taken him nowhere, given that he was now currently attending a training program to work at said company).
But maybe it was a blessing in disguise that he was set back to five years for graduation. Because you got to know him, and he got to know you.
On the outside, you might look like the total opposite of each otherâbecause Jimin was the definition of extroversion who wasn't afraid to put himself out thereâwhile you, admittedly, were more reserved and usually shied away from any public attention.
As much as you were welcoming to a lot of people, you didn't have a lot of close friends growing upâat least not the kind of friends you'd see on TV showsâbut when Jimin came to your life, you clicked so instantly you could not even figure out where you two exactly began.
The instant way you two clicked, you realized, was like your relationship with Jungkook nowadays.
Ever since that night at Midday Miso, you've been seeing a lot of each other. Granted that it was only in the same place, same time. You'd usually arrive past seven and he, a few minutes later. Jungkook, cladded in his slacks and long-sleeved polo, was becoming a usual sight after a shift, and your business casual clothes was turning as one for him as well.
Your usual seating spot became his as nights passed, and ahjumma, thank God, no longer asked you if he was your boyfriend. You were glad that she was slowly getting acquainted with him though, greeting him with a friendlier smile and tone reserved only for customers like you when he entered the restaurant, and Jungkook seemed to welcome the newfound friendship wholeheartedly.
On the consecutive nights you'd spent with him, it was almost as if you lived quite the same life. Though, you didn't know when he went to work. In fact, you didn't see him during the mornings even though in theory, it could be easy, granted that you both lived across each other. But strangely enough, you'd never caught him retiring to his flat to go to the bus station. You assumed he started earlier than you or way later.
You never asked, it never came up either.
Still, there was some sort of tranquility in the thought that you could spend some time with someone after your shift and just talk about whateverâand whatever meant a lot of things. Random at best. You once told him about the first raccoon you met in your life, and he told you all about the lioness he got to watch when he went to a South Saharan trip a few years ago.
Sometimes, the conversation went around what happened in the office that day. Jungkook noticed the little blot of ink on the cuff of your baby blue long sleeves, and you told him about the jammed printer in the accounting department. He'd told you later on about how he almost fucked up a report, said he was nervous because he was taking on a new role in the office.
Those moments were shared in long walks from Midday Miso to your apartment building, because naturally, you both established a small tradition of walking home together after a night of eating your hearts out at ahjumma's restaurant.
It was a rather sweet gesture, if you were honest to yourself. But you chose not to linger too much on the romantic thoughts that floated in your head, especially when you'd notice the way he made sure to walk on the outer side of the sidewalk, and when your fingers got too close the tips almost touched.
Because Jungkook, for how objectively good looking he was, was more than just his pretty face and physique.
He was kind and funny and genuine unlike any other straight men you've met in your life. Maybe the bar was low, but for all the times you've gotten to talk to him, he never showed any signs of ego most men would by the second hour of your meeting.
In the dating scene as an adult, a lot of men would come up to a date talking about how high they were placed at their company's hierarchy and how much they made in a month, and when they hear about yours, they'd always have a backhanded comment about how "you could only go up from there, right?" and those moments were always a bummer. Yawn-inducing, to be more accurate. Men and their predictability was boring and it was the reason why you'd declare to Jimin almost every time you got home from a date that you were retired from looking for them because most men just plainly fucking sucked.
But with Jungkook... was it different.
You found he didn't talk a lot, and one time you asked him if you were doing itâthe talkingâway too much, but he just chuckled and told you that he didn't mind.
Later on, you learned that he was just more of a listener rather than a talker, and that was not only a pure assumption of yours because he did listen attentively, alright. As for all the random things you've told him about, you never expected him to recall a single thing, not until one time when you passed by a food truck.
"Hey, didn't you say you like sundae?" Jungkook asked, and when you followed where his eyes were, it was at the food truck parked just a few steps ahead from where you both were.
"I do... wow. It's been so long since I saw a food truck around here." You said, following his steps towards the vehicle.
They had tables to dine in, and even if you were still full from eating at Midday Miso that night, the sundae was just too gratifying to decline. Jungkook was the same with the tteokbokki on his small plate, telling you he missed eating at one of these things, as they didn't exactly have anything like this abroad.
After he paid for the food (and of course not without a long, silly, light-hearted argument about it), he came back with two sticks of Melona ice pops which you looked at with widened eyes, animated expression written all over your face especially when he thrusted the purple yam flavor to you.
"Oh my god, how do they have these?"
"I was surprised as well... this is the first time in a while I'm eating this again." Jungkook said and then gestured to the ice pop in your hand, "You like the purple yam, right?"
"Yeah!"
You were about to ask him how he knew, but then you briefly remembered that one time you had a passionate rant about people hating on purple yam ice cream and why they weren't right.
And as you looked at Jungkook, he seemed to remember it all too well.
Jungkook showed genuine interest in the things you'd tell him about. He'd visit the cafes and restaurants you recommended to him as much as he could, and because you've come to exchange numbers with him eventually after almost two weeks of casually hanging out, they sometimes came during lunch break.
1 message received from Jungkook (Unit 446)
That day, you only exchanged contacts the other night, so seeing him on your phone so quickly like that caught you by surprise. It was welcomed though.
Jungkook (Unit 446) [12:36pm]:Â I went to Cafe Heaven for lunch and loved their ice americano
As soon as you read the first message, another one came.
Jungkook (Unit 446) [12:36pm]:Â This is Jungkook by the way :)
You laughed at his introduction. As if he didn't see you type his name on your phone last nightâlike he didn't jokingly complain about you putting the (Unit 446) in there but giving in eventually and also adding (Unit 336) to yours in his own contacts.
You [12:38pm]:Â Hi Jungkook! You [12:38pm]:Â im glad u went!!! u should also try their fettuccine alfredo
Seconds later, he sent a picture of the dish you just mentioned which put a smile on your face.
Jungkook (Unit 446) [12:39pm]:Â i'll get my refund from you if this doesnt taste good
You [12:40pm]: 1 week of friendship and ur already ripping me off đ€
Jungkook (Unit 446) [12:40pm]:Â đ Jungkook (Unit 446) [12:40pm]:Â first bite Jungkook (Unit 446) [12:41pm]:Â second bite
What was he on, you didn't know. But you were glad that he was slowly coming around, his jokes getting more... how would you say it... less polite? He just stopped apologizing after he said them! He usually would in the first few days, but now in your newfound closeness, it was like you were out of that stage where you tiptoed around each other still, feeling the other one out, trying to figure them out, all that stuff.
Nowadays, it was just more natural. Smooth-sailing. Paradoxical, almost, because of how the relationship felt more defined as well as loose.
You found you liked it that way.Â
Jungkook (Unit 446) [12:42pm]:Â I like it đđ»
And to your surprise, he sent you a picture of him, indeed, holding a thumbs up.
You'd like to think you were an expert on going along with the tide because even though you would be classified as introvert by most, you did pretty well in forming relationships with peopleâgranted, most of them were fleeting, at best, hence the lack of bigger circles in most of your lifeâbut you were great with making friends, regardless.Â
And maybe it was how you ended up with this whole thing with Jungkook. Because you were friendly and open, although you wouldn't dare to take all credits because as you mentioned before, he was a great conversationalist.
He didn't talk much as you said, but he didn't ever make you feel like you were talking way too much because he made sure that you knew he was listening, and when he talked, it was always engaging; conversations with him transitioned to different subjects in perfect seugue you would never noticed how you jumped from Melona ice pops to the existential dread you fought every morning before going to work. Â
When it came to humor, Jungkook's was different from Jimin's, of course, and your dynamic with your best friend could never be replicated with somebody else but Jungkook was close to truly becoming your friend, and for that, it was getting easier to ignore his handsome face.
You may have had an embarrassing moment of panicking mentally at seeing such a man in the first meeting, but nowadays, you could hold a conversation with him without thinking how hot he was.
Dare you say, you were starting to think more platonically about him rather than romantically. As you said, you were an expert on going along with the tide.
Or maybe that was too soon a declaration, because there were moments, like now, when you were certain juvenile flirting insisted on happening between you, steering you clear from completely feeling wholly platonic about Jungkook.
"I certainly have a bigger hand than you."
As if you didn't know that, Jungkook brought his hand up to show you it. Confused but not totally minding the whole thing, you proceeded to extend your own hand towards his, pressing them both together. Predictably, his hand could have engulfed the entirety of your own.
Jungkook laughed at the sight, and you didn't know exactly who broke the physical contact first but you were glad it was over as soon as it started.
But you couldn't have forgotten the electric zap along your spine when your hand got so close like that to his. Couldn't have ignored the hot feeling in your cheeks when you were made aware of what you just did.
Wow.
Were you guys flirting? Was he flirting? It was flirting, right? Juvenile, at best, because this was what kids did in high school! And Jungkook's hand was so...
You never imagined what it felt likeânever even crossed your mind until now. Expectations about how his hand felt never formed in your head because you sure as hell never thought about that kind of thing happening in the first place, but Jungkook's hand was the right balance of soft and hard. Calloused in a way most men's hands naturally were, and soft like enough comfort when held and touched.
It wasn't clammy, thank god, but you also wouldn't have thought he had clammy hands, solely because he just looked like he didn't. But god, was it big.
And my goodness, did it make you feel things.
You drank your water fast and cleared your throat, subtly, so that he didn't think too much of it.
"O-okay, but that's just genetics. Doesn't mean you could throw stronger punches."
You said in retaliation to one of your useless debates which now covered the coin-operated boxing arcade machine across the bus station nearby.
Jungkook leaned back against the monobloc chair that was definitely way too flimsy for him.
You were currently hanging out at the dining area of the food truck you came across a few days ago, forgoing Midday Miso for the night. Lately, Jungkook and you have been exploring a few more places other than there. You've tried other restaurants nearby, but ultimately, Midday Miso was still the top favorite and the food truck was becoming a staple in lieu of its convenience and just the overall vibe of eating outside and feeling the breeze of summer night air.
"You got me curious about the boxing machine." Jungkook said, crossing his arms.
"I held the highest score there for like a week, you know? Only did it though to impress the kids who liked to watch."
At that, Jungkook's face lit up in interest.
"We should do that sometime."
"Oh... I see, I see. You wanna impress the kids, too?" You playfully accused, squinting your eyes at him.
He chuckled and waved you off.
"It can be a challenge." Jungkook shrugged and looked at you with a hint of mirth in his eyes.
You let out a puff of breath, amused at his obvious antics.
"What's the catch?"
"Well... free boba delivered to your door for a week if you get the higher score. How's that sound?" He looked at you expectantly.
You chuckled before saying, "I'm gonna rip you off so bad, Jungkook."
"Only if you win, though." He said with a mischievous smirk.Â
"Oh, wow. When, you mean. When I win. So what's in it for you?" You leaned your elbow on the table and studied his face.
He looked at you for a while, then, the smirk from earlier was wiped off and exchanged with a much gentler smile.
"Home-cooked dinner at my place next week Friday."
Your eyebrows met.
"You want me to cook you something? Jungkook, do you have a death wish? I may either give you unintentional food poisoning or burn your house down, there's no in between."
"No," Jungkook laughed at your insane conclusion. "Sorry, I should've specified. I mean if you lose, I'll be cooking us a meal at my place."
"Oh."
You were left staring at him, a bit dumbfounded.
He just said he wanted to cook you guys a meal. At his place.
He was inviting you to his place. His personal space.
"It won't be better than Midday Miso but I think I can keep up." Jungkook added with a sheepish smile and scratched the back of his head in that seemingly boyish manner.
"Sure..." you responded, a bit delayed, much to your effort of not showing your big surprise at his offer. Before he noticed the way you were not believing what you heard, you chose to quip in a (hopefully) cheeky, "That is if you win, though."
Jungkook only hummed and then nodded.
"If I win."
He said, smiling at you.
This was dangerous.
The whole thing was teetering to something that was not very platonic, and just as you were starting to think this whole thing was!
Jimin always told you that you were bad at flirting, but in your defense, how were you supposed to know, exactly, if someone was flirting with you? A lot of people were friendly like that! Jungkook was maybe like that? Had you shown interest and he noticed so now he was playing into it? But that would be uncharacteristic of him. You didn't think he'd be the type to do something cruel like that...
But the tide was always rising and falling, they said, and the good thing was; you knew how to go along with the current.
So you did what you do best.
"Would you like to donate to the poor?"
"I'm sorry, ma'am, but there's a chance this card's gonna decline because I am the poor."
The cashier looked you in the eye with an even more impassive look than the one she had before you got your turn on the counter.
"Could've just said no." She said, punching your order away and you had to shamefully swipe your card and leave to go over where Jimin was.
"The cashier just snubbed me for being poor." You complained to Jimin, moving your coat to the next seat and settling in in yours.
Jimin took a sip from his latte and looked at you dead in the eye and said, "I'll call the manager if you want."
"Fuck off." You retaliated immediately. Jimin snorted at your way too predictable response.
See, this has happened way too many times more than what your fingers could count. You could not even pinpoint the exact time when Jimin started to joke about going full-on Karen-mode when you complained about a single little thing at the places you went to.
Anyway, you were currently on a lunch break when Jimin texted to see if you were free. What better way to spend your lunch than with your best friend? The company's canteen food was getting tired and they hiked up their prices. Your office's kitchen also ran out of Solhee's â your coworker â biscuits and so you thought you had to make do of Jimin's money for that day. You told him your motives yourself and as a petty retort, he told you to pay for your own pasta â at a cafĂ© that was way too expensive for its own good.
You stole a bite off his churros, and predictably, he rolled his eyes at you.
"Why'd you want to see me, by the way? What's up? You don't have training?" you glanced at your wristwatch, reading 12:40pm.
Soon, you were casually taking over his plate of churros. For how ridiculously priced it was, it sure tasted good as hell.
"I got the day off." Jimin shrugged.
You eyed him suspiciously almost immediately.
"Did you really...?"
It was a few seconds before Jimin gave in and took back his plate.
"Okay, no, I ditched the training today but for the record it's for a very important reason."
You put your hand over your chest and contorted your face in an awed, touched expression.
"The important reason being... meeting me?"
"Ew, no," Was Jimin's quick, disgusted, response â which earned a laugh from you as usual.
From your peripheral vision, you saw the waiter heading towards your direction and so you waited for him to come over and serve you your pasta and frappe. After thanking him, you huddled closer to your best friend and asked, "Okay, what is it then?"
Jimi pursed his lips, making your eyebrows meet.
"It's kinda... bummer news."
"You're pregnant?"
"No, you'd be way too happy and I can't be a single dad," He shook his head as if not even wanting to imagine that.
"Namjoon looks like he's gonna take care of it with you." You sing-sang, sipping on your coffee and winking at him indiscreetly â emphasis on indiscreetly because you never knew how to wink properly.
What you did not expect, was the look on Jimin's face when you mentioned Namjoon.
"Well..." He trailed off, and you waited for it curiously; anticipating his impending answer in return because your conversation was always quick-witted like that. But right now, Jimin's expression was devoid of any jokes.Â
Not something you expected when you just mentioned his boyfriend.
"Iâ did something happen?" You quickly dropped the teasing tone and exchanged it with a concerned one, eyes looking at him with worry.
Jimin closed his eyes for a while and let out a deep breath. "See, that's the bummer news."
"Do you want to tell me? Or we can justâ"
He cut you off before you could even finish your sentence. But he did it with a smile that didn't quite reach his eyes â and this was Jimin. His eyes did not not reach his eyes when he smiled!
"He's going to Italy."
"Oh."
When the pause prolonged for over a minute, with you looking at him mouth agape, Jimin let out a heavy sigh once again and shook his head.
"I know. It's work... and I always understood that. He travels a lot and we're both okay with it. But it was usually just around the country, not another continent. I mean, what did he mean Italy? And that's not even the worst part. He knew a month ago he was going but he only told me two days ago and he's leaving Thursday," Jimin looked at you to take a pause, seemingly trying to look for a reaction.
You thought, that's tomorrow.
As if he read your mind, he nodded, sounding almost defeated.
"I know."
"Oh, Jimin..." You said, not exactly knowing what to say.
Jimin and Namjoon had been together for over a year. At least, officially, because they spent the last three years just casually hooking up on and off. You liked them together and had been more than glad when they finally put a label to it â exactly why you knew Namjoon enough to not badmouth him when you usually would men Jimin usually dated. You knew perfectly well that Namjoon genuinely cared about your best friend and he loved him. So if Jimin was at a loss for this obvious mistake on his boyfriend's part, even more so you were.
"He's been blowing up my phone ever since." Jimin added, glancing at his phone on the table. "Intentionally didn't charge my phone today so I don't receive his calls and texts."
That prompted you to remember the message you received from Namjoon last night.
"Oh, that's why he texted me yesterday. He asked about you, and I told you through text but you didn't answer." Things were starting to make sense now, and as you observed Jimin's face, they were getting clearer. "You never talked since?"
Jimin pursed his lips. He took his coffee back to his mouth and sipped while looking away. "Nope."
"Jimin." You tilted your head.
He looked at you again, and you knew exactly that he was thinking the same thing as you: It was within his right to feel off about what Namjoon did, but regardless; Jimin was being a little petty, and he needed to communicate with his boyfriend instead of giving him the cold shoulder.
There was a pout that formed on Jimin's lips right after.
"I know. I just..."
"He could've told you sooner?" He nodded at your words. You mirrored that. "He should have. Italy is not Busan â it's not just a train ride away."
Jimin sighed, looking exasperated now. "I told him that exactly. I'm not even mad he's going to Italy, I just think I deserve to know right after he was told about it."
You nodded. "You should really talk. It sounds like he wants to apologize, anyway, given that he's now trying to talk to me to get through you."
"Sorry you got caught up in this. I'm gonna talk to him about it."
"Eh, it's fine. Joon and I are also friends, you know?" You shrugged, genuinely not minding Namjoon coming to you.Â
You liked Namjoon and thought that he was the perfect match for Jimin. They were cute together and just seemed to... take the best out of each other. You'd go to any lengths to keep them together, as long as Jimin wanted Namjoon and as his boyfriend. You've seen Jimin go from relationships to relationships, some just fleeting and simple dalliances, and most destructive and were just... not good for him. You've never seen your best friend truly happy and committed in a romantic relationship other than with Namjoon, and as someone who cared about him, you'd do a lot of things to make him happy.
"Here's another thing, his flight is tomorrow at 11:30pm in the evening. Mom's birthday dinner is at 10." Jimin usually had his composure everytime, and it was very rarely you'd see him show any worry because he liked everybody to think he was in control of every situation. You smiled. Classic Jimin. He'd only ever show his true nature to you though, and that was exactly why he looked at you with worried eyes and continued to say, "I really wanna be there to send him off."
The call time for his mother's party was at 10 and naturally people would start swarming in way past that time. If Jimin were to sneak out way too early, you knew his mother was not going to be happy about it and his father would give him an even bigger shit for it. Sure, he could cancel, but what would he say? That their supposed cishet son is sending off his boyfriend at the airport for the night? He couldn't reason work either because he didn't exactly have one.
After having his wrongful DUI accusation last springâ which was actually already settled, on the grounds that it was definitely not DUI and the owner of the other car just overreacted to a fender bender, the media was adamant on tactically using that to taint his family's image and it unfortunately succeeded â hence, why Jimin had been laying low these past few months; going to training programs, obeying his parents more than usual, doing what they wanted...
You sighed. Your best friend deserved so much better.
"Don't worry, I'll find a way to get us to leave early." You told him after awhile.
Jimin arched his brow, intrigued.
Waving him off, you said, "I can fake something."
As if hearing some magic words, Jimin suddenly perked up.
"No way you're using the diarrhea card?"
Giving him a dirty look, you shook your head. "Nah, not during a dinner party. It's gotta be something new and less... gross."
"Oh, oh!" Jimin put a finger over his lip. "What about a sprained ankle? Can you pull that off?"
You deadpanned. "Okay, you ought to pay me more if you want me to do that."
"I can, but I won't. Stop ripping me off, I'm your best friend."
"Jimin, I'll save you from your family. I'm great at this." You said jokingly, but you hoped that he knew you weren't just jesting and were serious about it.
With the appreciation masking your best friend's face, though, you knew he got the message right away, but as you looked at him longer, you realize that he was about to say something and you quickly pulled back, shaking your head.
Jimin quickly reacted. "No! You know what, I'm gonna say itâ"
"Don't say it." You quickly cut him off, giggling while you shake your cup of coffee.
"You can't keep me from saying I loâ"
"Jimin, I will tell everybody in this place you watch dubbed anime, I'm serious."
He gasped, quite dramatically.
"You did not just go there!" Then, he lowered his voice a bit, arching his brow at you, vindicative when he said, "You wore skinny jeans a month ago."
"How dare you, you wore a fuckass poncho last week. I saw on your IG story."
"That was from Namjoon and he also gave you one, FYI."
You grimaced. "Tell him I love him but I'm not wearing a poncho, Jimin."
"I was gonna tell you I love you and that you're the best person ever but now I have to rethink all of that." He rolled his eyes, and when the banter ended with you having the last words, you laughed at his face.
"God, you're just never beating me at this."
"Please, we both know you write your mediocre insults on your diary every night trying to one-up me, __. But let's talk about something else."
"I'm not even gonna acknowledge the diary thing but, sure, shoot." You said, starting to eat your pasta.
Jimin looked at your food full of judgement and grimaced. "Is that shrimp? Your doctor is growing grey pubes as we speak," He commented, and you knew he was referring to your shrimp allergy so you shushed him.
"This is vegan shrimp. It's tofu."
He just shook his head, disagreement written on his face. But he let it pass, anyway.
"Anyway, how's Mr. 446?"
The pasta suddenly entered the wrong track.
"Girl," Jimin was quick to offer you the glass of water on his side and you were just as fast to drink it. "You okay?"
"I'm sure there are existing cases of people dying because food got on the wrong track while they're eating, but yeah, sure, I'm okay." When you finished the water, you looked at Jimin who was just doing the same thing.
Crossing his arms, he eyed you expectantly. "Well?"
"I mean... what do you want me to say?" you told him, and you could've sworn you did not want to show anything on your face but you were certain there was a huge smile on it and for some reason, you couldn't help it.
Jimin's jaw dropped, expressions of disbelief and amusement when he asked you curiously, "What do you mean by that?"
"Okay, look, Jiminâ" You scratched the back of your head, feeling a little sheepish to tell him all about Jungkook. "He told me we'd get dinner at his place this Friday if he wins this... thing."
His mouth was agape by then and you couldn't help but laugh.
"You... slut."
You would absolutely be rolling off the floor if you weren't at a public place the moment he mouthed the word, but still, you couldn't help but retort back.
"Shut up, you can't be the only one whoring around in this friendship." Jimin snorted at that and you both had to stifle your laughter when you noticed a woman from across the room eyeing you both.
This was one of the reasons why Jimin and you didn't belong in public places other than bars or clubs â because you were way too rowdy together for civilization.
"So you're saying you're whoring around?" He eyed you suspiciously.
"Wrong information. It's actually kind of platonic."
Jimin quickly waved you off. "Babe, if a guy invites you to his place, nothing is ever platonic about it. What do you think you'll do together there? Stare at each other for two hours straight?"
God, you hated and loved that he enables your delusions.
"Okay, you're being insane about this. It's just dinner," Trying to fight off the not-so-very-platonic things that suddenly played in your head after hearing his previous remark. To show that you didn't care, you added for good measure, "âAnd anyway, we had some sort of deal about it so it's not definite."
Your best friend just shrugged. "I'm all for it. But you're sure he isn't a serial killer, right?"
"Jimin, god, no," you chuckled at that. "I mean, I don't really know for sure, but we're friends now and as far as I know, he's never shown signs of psychopathy."
Jimin and you hadn't hung out in a while, so you haven't really told him all about Jungkook yet and the things you got to know about him. He didn't even know his name. As far as he was concerned, Jungkook was still Mr. 446, and you were fine keeping it that way. He had a lot on his plate right now, anyway.
"Just being cautious." He sing-sang, putting both his hands in the air.
You shook your head.
"Anyway, we also need to talk about what we're gonna wear tomorrow," Jimin suddenly said. "You got the Pinterest board I sent you, right? For the inspo."
Grinning, you grabbed your iPad from your bag and got to the link immediately. Your phone died on the way to the café. Good thing you had another device and brought it with you.
"I also added a few things in here. Gold and black's the theme, right?" You clarified, scrolling through the board you and Jimin both contributed to. Your best friend took it upon himself to transfer seats so he could be beside you and look at your screen at the same time.
"You're gonna look so good in Schiaparelli, babe," Jimin said while checking out the pictures you added.
"It's just an inspo, I don't actually need to wear a Schiaparelli." You chuckled.
"Who do you think your best friend is?"
You both laughed at that but it stopped when a notification popped up on your computer. Recognizing the address as your work email, you were quick to hover over it. When you were about to open it to see the full message, your iPad suddenly died.
"Shoot." You looked at Jimin with a straight face. "I forgot to plug it in. Didn't notice the battery."
Jimin grimaced. "Didn't bring any power cable."
"We'll have to do with a phone. Mine died."
You were just about to ask him for his but then you remembered what he said about avoiding Namjoon, hence, his phone was of no use either.Â
"We're gonna have to freestyle."
Last year, Mrs. Park's party was held at a theater hall â your first time at one, by the way.
Tonight, it was at their mansion.
You've only ever been to the Park's a total of one time, which was now. Stepping a foot inside here for the first time in your life, the house felt unreal. It was the epitome of money and wealth and everything regal in the world â like a palace of some sort. They had butlers and guards at the gates so maybe that wasn't an exaggeration, but damn, Jimin truly came from money.
Regardless of how shiny the whole building was in both literal and figurative senses though, there was an emptiness to it. It didn't look lived in â which was a fair assumption for a house this big. It definitely did not look like people liked staying here, and maybe that was not a stretch, because as soon as he turned 18, Jimin moved away and lived in his own place ever since. You asked him on your way here and he told you it was his first time this year to visit his own house.
The decoration was sick, though. Granted, they must have surely hired people to do it but at least they'd hired excellent ones. You wouldn't have expected anything less from Jimin's mom.
Jimin and you arrived at 10pm sharp, and thankfully, people were already starting to fill the place up. It was now past 15 minutes to 10pm since you arrived and there really was nothing different that went on from last year; you saw some familiar faces, politicians, and celebrities. Jimin introduced you to some people as his girlfriend, and you got to have quick chats with his model friends.
You knew it didn't actually matter if you thought about it carefully, but there was truly nothing compared to the feeling you get when you see someone in the flesh that you only see on TV all your life. You didn't feel lucky to see them in person, per se, you were just poured over the realization that these people were actually real and they weren't just some sort of simulation to keep the entertainment industry of your country afloat.
Although, you did meet Han Sol â an actress whose works you genuinely admired. Jimin just told you her husband was his second cousin.
It wasn't later that Jimin and you were invited to his family's table, where some of his cousins and immediate family were.
The greetings went pretty normal. Normal as in: Jimin's mom didn't say anything about your weight first thing first. Granted, she didn't try to hide the look of disappointment on her face when she saw you with his son. Probably reeling at the fact that you were still "dating" each other even after a year â she was probably under the impression that it wasn't serious between you two last year. His father, meanwhile, was... quiet. As usual. A man who obviously didn't really say much except ask Jimin about the training program and his siblings' jobs.
Mr. Park didn't really talk to you, just like last year. Like you were almost invisible to him â and you were glad that was the case. He probably didn't like to acknowledge your supposed relationship in the first place. Probably knew that you were working a middle-class job and didn't want to know any further. But at least, he wasn't saying anything. That was nice.
"Where's your cousin?" Asked Jimin's mom suddenly, looking at his son.
"He said he got caught up in traffic. Sent 20 minutes ago." Jimin shrugged. You would ask him about which cousin they were referring to but they had like millions of it at these events so you didn't bother.
Mrs. Park shook her head disapprovingly. "That kid. Always late to the family dinners. Did Junghyun ever teachâ"
"Hey,"
Your attention was then focused to the man who just arrived. Black tie, tall... dashing. Jimin was a good-looking individual and his family, as evil as they may be as per his words, were blessed with good genes. If you were to look at the new man that arrived to the table very carefully, you'd say he almost looked familiar.
"Oh, Junghyun!"
Jimin glanced at you and discreetly mouthed, "Cousin."
"Aunt, happy birthday." He said after laughing at Jimin's mother coos. He looked across the table and continued, "Hi, uncle. Jaeyul, Sunghoon, Jimin." They all greeted him back and you could feel the hairs on your nape starting to stand up when his eyes landed on you once again. "And this is...?"
"Oh, that's Jimin's girlfriend, __." Jaeyul, Jimin's brother said.
"Hi." you greeted him, waving a bit.
"Oh?" Junghyun immediately looked at Jimin, eyes not hiding his shock. When you trained your eyes on Jimin, you felt his fake smile. "That's great, man. I didn't know you had a girlfriend. Hi, miss...?"
"It's __." you filled in.
"Nice to meet you, __." He said with a smile. The more you looked at him, the more you could almost pinpoint who he looked like â but that shouldn't really matter.
Junghyun looked over Jimin's parents once again, "Anyway, sorry I'm a bit late, got caught up in traffic."
Jimin cleared his throat.
"How about you, Junghyun? Got a girlfriend yet?" He asked as soon as Junghyun sat on the opposite side of the long table.
You could see Jimin's mother's curiosity peaking at that.
"Tell us, dear. Last time you were dating Kang Iseul, right? The actress. You're still with her?"
Everybody at the table nodded while you almost choked on the smoked quail you were eating. He was dating Kang Iseul? She was a popular actress who announced a hiatus three years ago. That actress Kang Iseul?
Junghyun chuckled and shook his head. "Nah, aunt, that was my brother, and uh, no, I'm not dating anybody currently."
"Oh well. I just wish your brother stops dating that woman. I never really liked that girl. She acts way too self-righteous! I mean, who cut ties with their billionaire father and live independently just so they can say they're self-made? It's ridiculous." Jimin's mother said in that usual snotty tone of hers, and you could not possibly process all of what was going on.
If it wasn't clear to you a moment ago, it was crystal now. Unfortunately, you were a bit chronically online and were there in real time when one random tweet blew up about Kang Iseul being a nepotism baby. But was this guy's brother really dating her? The most important and concerning thing, though, was that: why was Jimin's mom always so annoying about who her family members date? And this was not even her immediate family, mind you.
"Jina," Jimin's father had a warning tone when he called her but Jimin's mom just shrugged him off with a "tsk!"
"Kids are so ungrateful nowadays, don't you think? Anyway, Junghyun dear, you remember the Kang gala I told you about two months ago?" Jimin's mom looked pointedly at Jimin and you bit your lip.
Of course, here comes her passive aggressive disapproval of you.Â
"Kang Heesu and her sister Kang Hani will be there. Heesu is a wonderful woman," she chuckled, looking over at Jimin's direction subtly. You had to physically restrain yourself from rolling your eyes. Couldn't she be more obvious about acting as a wingman for Jimin and Heesu? But she continued, just like she always did. "I also heard Kang Hani is going for senior partner at Yoon and Yang, you may be interested. Pretty lady."
Junghyun just awkwardly laughed. "I'll keep that in mind."
Jimiin's father suddenly spoke, making everyone look at him.
"Where is that kid?" He said, authority dripping through his voice. Jimin was obviously not close to his father, and who would be? Mr. Park was way too intimidating. You found it funny to think if he ever did anything remotely paternal towards his children.
"We were supposed to go together but he said he had something to finish. He'll be arriving later." Junghyun said, obviously not oblivious to the "kid" Mr. Park was referring to. You were way too uncaring to actually try to figure that out.
"I see." Jimin's father nodded. "How's Jeon and Min, Junghyun? I heard you were just appointed managing partner last week."
Junghyun responded with a "yes" and they started to talk about the law firm â you assumed â and other people they mutually knew related to the business.
You knew Jimin's complicated family tree was composed of all sorts of professionals, but damn, they had lawyers in here too. It was like out of a career day event at grade schools.
"Is it true Gukka's going to be CEO?" Jimin's mother said, joining the conversation.
You were glad they were doing all the talking. Last year, they talked to you like they were interrogating you and that was not nice.
"Well, dad's not giving up the company so soon. Gukka's going for interim CTO first." Junghyun said with a polite smile.
Gukka. That must be the brother of Junghyun, although it sounded more like a nickname than a real name.
"Your brother's a hard worker. He's looking at a CEO position, some are still at training programs." Jimin's father remarked with a pointed tone.
Oh, fuck me, you thought to yourself. You thought it was gonna take awhile for the comparison to start, but it seemed they were determined to beat their record of one hour from last year.
You tried subtly looking at Jimin to see if he was okay or anything, but you felt him squeezing your wrist under the table. His face was devoid of any emotion as he continued with his own food.
Junghyun, meanwhile, was obviously taken aback by the response and also looked over at Jimin. He was quick to recover, though â probably knew that was a jab at his cousin just like every other person in the room. Atmosphere grew tense, and you had to squirm in your seat a little bit.
"Training programs help a lot, though." Junghyun awkwardly laughed. You were starting to feel bad for him as well.
"Well, you're lawyering. Trainings are important. Mine's kinda stupid." Jimin said which made everybody look at him, including you.
"You're learning anything yet, son?" His father pointedly looked at him.
"We'll see."
Jimin's dismissive tone made you feel the eye roll he would've done after saying that.
Look, he rebelled for the most part of his life so him being passive-aggressive towards his family was not a new thing, but to witness it was both nerve-wracking and honestly... funny. His parents were such assholes so they probably deserved his attitude.
Mrs. Park smiled a fake one before looking at you.
"Well, what about you __ dear? You're a... what was that again? How is that going for you?"
Because you wanted to piss them off, you mirrored her fake smile and said, "I got fired six months ago at my accounting job."
"Pftâ"Â you pinched Jimin's arm at his reaction.
Of course he'd laugh at that. You asked him how you could piss his parents off tonight just to get back at them from last year and he told you to pretend to be unemployed or you work a minimum wage job because that was their biggest ick. Jimin didn't know you were going to come through.
"Oh."
The look on Jimin's mom's face looked as if she heard the most scandalous thing ever, and if his father's frown was deep even before the dinner started, his face was now below the ground. It felt satisfying to get those looks on their faces. Good! They were such assholes. Imagine getting devastated at someone being unemployed? Okay â for the record, being unemployed was devastating but these people weren't sympathizing with that, they found it humiliating in an elitist wayâ criminal almost.Â
You nodded, your lips almost getting tired from stretching them too far.
"Yeah. Anyway, I started working at a local burger joint. You should visit us sometime."
"I'm vegan." Jimin's mom said, her face now drained with the fake joy she's worn all night.
"We have vegan options." you quipped. Jimin once again made a sound beside you, hiding his laughter.
"Wait, really? They offer vegan options at a street burger joint?" Sunghoon, the youngest of the Park brothers, asked.
You almost laughed at the genuine curiosity in his voice. He was still in high school and from what Jimin told you, he was a nice kid. He wasn't very close to any of his brothers, though.
"Nah, it's the only one in town." You bullshit one more time, drinking the wine beside you. "Sorry, can I excuse myself for a minute?"
They nodded and you stood up, heading to the bathroom, brisking once you got out of their sight to get there more quickly.
It was now 10:30 pm â meaning, you had to do something to get Jimin out of here now if he wanted to be on time at the airport to send off Namjoon.
Once you got inside, you looked at yourself in the mirror and sighed.Â
This whole thing was sucking the shit out of your soul, but you needed to get through it.
It took you awhile to finish your pep talk in the bathroom.
If only you could've have locked yourself in there to avoid socializing with anybody, you willingly would. But you were running out of time and unfortunately, you had something to do and that was to fake some illness to get both Jimin and you out of here.
When you got out to approach the family's table one more time, you suddenly stopped in your tracks.
The table was at least fifteen meters away from where you stood, but you could clearly see the side in which Jimin's cousin, Junghyun, sat, facing your direction. He wasn't the issue â no, far from it. It was the guy beside him who wore the same set of black tie as him; the face attached to the body who wore it though, was someone you did not expect to see.
Why the fuck was Jungkook, Unit 446, here?!
From where you were, you could see him engaging with Junghyun and Jimin's parents. You couldn't hear them, of course, but it was clear that they were acquainted â close â even from afar.
Why did he look so comfortable with the Parks? Why was he at the family table laughing and conversing with everybody, including Jimin? Why did he seem like he went to many of these, like this was just another Thursday for him?
There was a waiter who walked past you and you were grateful for it because had it not been the case, people would start to get weirded out about you standing on the same place longer than necessary, looking stoned. That was also an opportunity to run away from the situation without Jungkook possibly seeing and recognizing you.
"I'll take this," You told the waiter and grabbed the glass of champagne and quickly turned on your heels, heading to the opposite side of the family table where the Parks, and apparently, Jungkook were.
You found yourself heading to the bathroom again, your feet seemingly developing a mind of its own as it led you there unconsciously. You knew you'd be in trouble if they found out about you putting the champagne glass in the sink, but you needed to get inside the toilet and think over everything that was happening tonight.
What the fuck. What the fuck!  Again, why the hell was Jungkook here?
As far as you knew, he was just a regular man that happened to be living across from you. He was just supposed to be some guy you were regularly hanging out with nowadays. Your friend. Your crush â whatever! What he wasn't supposed to be is be here at your best friend's mother's birthday party and hanging out with his family!
Your phone dinged, a message notification from Jimin welcoming you.
cuntress #1 [10:32pm]:Â girl what happened I saw u going back to the bathroom?
You didn't know why it was suddenly too hot, but you felt the balls of sweat starting to form on the side of your forehead.
You [10:33pm]:Â im going with the diarrhea excuse
cuntress #1 [10:33pm]: tbh idc atp I just wanna go to joon đ
"Shit!"
Right! Joon. Namjoon. Jimin needed to go to Nmajoon as soon as possible.
cuntress #1 [10:33pm]:Â also another cousin has arrived u rmr jeon jungkook he's junghyun's brother cuntress #1 [10:33pm]:Â love this guy but moms starting to compare me to him and I need out right NEOW im justt aking hits after hits jesusssssss
You could just feel the blood draining from your face as soon as you read Jungkook's name in the text.
Jeon Jungkook. Jungkook. Gukka. Kook-a.
That was why the Junghyun guy looked familiar. Because he had the same coloring of Jeon Jungkook. Because they were goddamn siblings.
You started to replay some memories in your head, trying to figure out if you've ever heard Jungkook talk about his family in one of your conversations. But as far as you remembered, he never did. All you knew about him was that he was from the States, and he only got here because of work and he had a dog and as far as you were concerned, his cousin was definitely not Park fucking Jimin, your best friend.
Pacing around the confined space of the toilet, you tried to wrack your brain if you've ever mentioned Jimin to him and in the event that you did, why he never told you that he was his cousin â but you came up blank. Blank because you never told him about your best friend's name... and in turn, Jimin didn't know what Mr. 446's name was, either. They were both genuinely oblivious about the whole thing and couldn't have made you a fool in the situation.
In short, you were the one who was stupid as hell for not connecting the dots sooner.
"Hey, you just landed?"
If it was a private conversation Jimin would've left the room but since he didn't, you decided to stay in bed, kind of listening in to the conversation, but also not, as you turned the volume down of the show you were watching earlier on your laptop.
"Nah, you want me to pick you up?" Jimin sat up on the edge of the bed and you looked at him curiously. "Sure, I'm free, Kook. You have a place to stay? Hotel suite or something?" He nodded to whatever the other person was saying on the other line. "Oh, you're here for three months? Thought you were just flying in for mom's birthday?"
It was moments after they said goodbye that Jimin turned to you to ask, "Well, my cousin's apparently staying here for three months. Got this job thing going on."
"Fuck me." You hissed, remembering that time when Jimin told you about his cousin staying here for three months because of work.
cuntress #1 [10:35pm]: its either ur taking a guinness world record breaker piss there or u really do have diarrhea now and ur shitting cuntress #1 [10:36pm]: anyway get this, jungkook's gonna be interim cto at your company did u know that??????????????????
You almost dropped your phone upon reading the last message.
What the hell did he mean by that?
Heart beating fast as if it wanted to break out of your own ribcage, you closed your eyes and read Jimin's message once again. There was no way he would be shitting you about any of this. He knew where you worked at and you knew your current company was his uncle's, and now that you knew Jungkook was his cousin...
Shit. Was this what they were talking about at the table earlier? About Junghyun saying his brother was gonna be interim CTO? Did he mean Jeon Jungkook all along? Your freaking neighbor?
Suddenly, you remembered the email you received that afternoon that you never bothered to check again because you simply forgot about it. Who even actually checks their work email? Literally no one. You spend your weeks facing your computer while email flew in like porn ads on a shady website, you weren't about to willingly go to the app and check it on your leisure time.
But maybe you should have.
Fingers involuntarily shaking in their wake as you switched to your work email on your phone, you clicked on the recent unread message that was on top from the HR department.
Subject: Invitation to Ceremony: Announcement of Interim CTO Dear Blue Nexus Inc. employee, We hope this email finds you well. We would like to inform you that a ceremony has been scheduled on July 29, 2028, 10:00 am at the AVR Hall 5, 12th floor. The purpose of this meeting is to announce the appointment of our interim Chief Technology Officer (CTO), Mr. Jeon Jungkook. As you may be aware, our previous CTO, Mr. Shin Juman, is currently on medical leave recovering from a stroke. While he is recuperating and undergoing treatment, it has become necessary for us to appoint an interim CTO for an indefinite period of time to ensure the continuity and effectiveness of our operations. Your presence at this ceremony is highly valued as we introduce the new leadership to the team and outline our strategic direction moving forward. Light refreshments will be served. Thank you for your attention to this matter. We look forward to seeing you at the ceremony. Best regards, HR Department
You knew that feeling when you were just taking hits and hits? This was it.
So not only was Jeon Jungkook Jimin's cousin, he was also gonna be the interim CTO of the company you were currently working at. He was technically going to be your boss, and you would be both working in the same place all the while living across each other where he would see you taking out your trash every Sunday morning in your worn-out highschool PE shirt and pants. He was going to be your boss working at the company you complained to him about on the nights you walked together to your shared apartment complex.
You flirted with Jungkook. You flirted with the guy who was the son of the owner of your whole company building â and not only that, he was your best friend's cousin, to add salt to injury.
You [10:38pm]:Â jimin we need to get out of here
cuntress #1 [10:38pm]:Â ive been saying
You [10:38pm]:Â but i cant go out there again. Just tell them i had a problem in the bathroom??
cuntress #1 [10:38pm]: ok on it cuntress #1 [10:38pm]: im kind of convinced u shitted in there tho????????
You rolled your eyes, but at the same time found an opportunity in that. Jimin can't know the truth.
You [10:39pm]:Â u cant judge me for having a very human experience fuck u the cake i ate earlier was giving cake boss
cuntress #1 [10:39pm]:Â KJAHFKGSIDFHDSHASFHSKJBF
You [10:39pm]:Â im literally doing this for u and joon
cuntress #1 [10:39pm]: IKNOW!!!!!!!!!!!!thanks to ur stomach problems cuntress #1 [10:39pm]: im going there
You [10:40pm]:Â make sure they don't see us again to really sell the whole im-embarassed-thing
cuntress #1 [10:40pm]:Â ON IT! Were going out the back door I don't think they'll notice
You couldn't even find it in you to laugh a little bit at your silly exchange and scheme, because you were way too stressed about what you just found out.
You let out a controlled, heavy breath, leaning your back on the door and shut your eyes aggressively.
"What the hell am I gonna do after this?"

While your new relationship has you feeling like a lovesick teenager with all the affection that Jungkook shows you, you're still you - a professional trying to make it in the corporate world, and an eldest child trying not to disappoint her parents. And that turns out to be your undoing, as a little blunder causes a rift between you and Jungkook, resulting in a trip that you might as well have messed up... Not if your brother can help it, though.
Listen to đ”: Hands Down by Dashboard Confessional
Playlist đ¶: High School Playlist
A/N 1: I know I said Iâd be on a break but I reread Hold Me Close and found comfort in this Jungkook đ„č so I went ahead and wrote this little piece! Whipped and comforting boyfriend JK is what I needed so I hope you enjoy this đ
Six - the number of work calls youâve already taken in the last hour, with each one of them lasting one whole song. Jungkook calculates that youâve spent half of the entire drive since leaving Seoul talking with your boss about some report that he somehow canât complete without you, which sucks because Jungkook was really looking forward to this road trip with you and his best friend.
You groan after you hang up and the clackity clack of the keyboard continues. He was hoping to hold your hand while he drove and maybe sing with you some of your favorite songs that he put on but it doesnât seem like those will happen anytime soon. Youâre immersed in your work but he guesses you have to be; the sooner this ends, the sooner your focus will be on him and this present moment.
He finds the positive side of it at least. He gets to listen to you explain things - why the numbers are what they are, what targets you reached, and what risks you managed. Itâs quite silly but itâs kind of a turn on, hearing you talk about something you know like the back of your hand, pretty much proving to your crap of a boss how good you are at your job and why youâre an asset to the company. You know your shit, and you have a classy way of making sure they know that you do.Â
Six calls, and Jungkook already knows half of your project report. And perhaps heâll know more, as the seventh one comes.
You let it ring for one, two, three times, as you hold your phone in one hand while you continue to type away with the other.Â
âI swear to god, ___. If you donât pick that up, Iâm gonna throw your phone out of this car,â Jimin, whoâs comfortably seated in the backseat, growls.Â
The dramatics is understandable because one, itâs Jimin and two, the constant ringing is a little bit much.
â___, Iâm not fucking kiddiââ
âHello, sir,â you finally answer, then proceed to discuss this monthâs analytics and projections for the succeeding quarter.
Jungkook predicts itâs gonna take you another whole song to finish, so he instead focuses on the road and appreciates the clear skies and familiar scenery of the drive to Busan. His thoughts go to how these next several days are gonna go. Thereâs visiting your favorite spots growing up, going to a resort, staying in to eat and play video games, and of course, cuddling with you in your room, as you and Jimin will have your parentsâ house to yourselves once they leave for their anniversary trip in two days.
His musings are disrupted though, when he looks at the rear view mirror and sees Jiminâs annoyed face blocking his view. Jungkook canât help but laugh, especially when he hears his best friend grumbling complaints just behind him.
âLeave her be, sheâll be done soon,â Jungkook dismisses him. âThey sound like important stuff.â
âSheâs talking so loudly!â Jimin groans. âI just want to reminisce and sing along to our teenage emo music, Kook.â
Jungkook turns the music off.Â
âThere, I paused it. You can sing along once sheâs done speaking on the phone,â he says.
Jimin pouts in response. âYou always take her side. You werenât like this when we were kids.â
âWell, if it means anything, I always took her side. I just never told you,â Jungkook laughs.
âTraitor.â
âIâm literally your most loyal friend.â
Itâs a statement that Jimin canât counter. Jungkook is his most loyal friend. And the most supportive. And the most dependable. And definitely the one whoâs never left his side.Â
When Jimin casually told their group that he likes girls and boys, Jungkook was the only one who didnât need time to âwarm up to the idea.â Jungkook was also the only one who never disappeared whenever he had a girlfriend. He was also the one who never missed a single one of Jiminâs dance showcases in college and professional shows.Â
And of course, Jungkook was the one friend who took up his offer to drink that Friday afternoon, resulting in that infamous gutter incident - as you like to call it - and his subsequent unemployment and homelessness. While you, his beloved sister, were there to pick up the pieces, so was Jungkook, the way he promised he would after they became friends at 10 years old.Â
Those months when Jimin was heartbroken and unsure of what he was going to do with his life, his best friend was there to make sure that he wasnât going to lose his drive and love for dancing. His best friend is also the one constantly cheering him up about this long-distance relationship that he decided to have with Taehyung while others continue to be a skeptic.
Jungkook is that friend, and Jimin supposes he can forgive the other man every time he sides with you.
Jimin is about to complain again when you put the phone down and make one of your restrained cries. He pities you, but it doesnât change the fact that he wishes you wouldnât be doing your work stuff while youâre on a trip of whatâs supposed to be a mini-break.
âI donât get why you donât pick up after the first ring,â he huffs.Â
âItâs so Mr. Soo knows that Iâm not easily available,â you say.Â
âBut you are. You answer it anyway,â Jimin rolls his eyes.
âExactly, Iâm gonna answer it anyway. Might as well make him wait for it because he needs me,â you point out. âItâs bad enough that heâs calling while Iâm taking the leave he approved, so Iâm just pissing him off. He doesnât know I changed the prompt to leave me a voice message to an annoying song so heâll have to sit through it to get to me. I already know itâs getting on his nerves.â
âOoh, petty. I like that,â Jimin hums.Â
âI know. I got that from you,â you proudly smile.
âBut why are you even working?â He whines, your brotherâs tone more of pity than annoyance. âIt totally defeats the purpose of a leave. And you shouldnât be indulging him!â
âWell, Mr. Soo approved this leave thinking that Chul would help him craft this report, which is based on the project that I proposed, only to realize that he doesnât know shit about it because I wrote everything, and he just took the credit,â you explain. âI donât want to be doing this, too, but I also just took the chance to show whoâs driving the wheel, and itâs definitely me. Plus, I worked hard for that project. Working on the report at least gives me a chance to give myself credit for it.â
âHmm, I guess youâre right,â Jimin concedes. âYour voice is just so loud.â
âIâm sorry. I just wanted to match his tone,â you say. âBut heâll be in a meeting for the next hour or so and he probably wonât need me again until then. You can turn the music back on.â
âUgh, thank god,â Jimin groans again. âI missed my favorite song.â
He leans forward and squeezes himself in the small space between you and Jungkook. The proximity causes Jimin to smack his elbow on your face, which you know is intended, considering how much of a brat he is. So you do what you always do - flick the back of his head.Â
He yells but gets over it once he manages to press the rewind button and plays the song heâs been wanting to hear. You havenât been paying attention throughout the drive and hadnât even known what they were listening to, but once the music comes on, a wave of nostalgia hits you.
You take the CD case you see in the compartment and scan the song list.
âDashboard Confessional?â You read out. âMayday Parade? Something Corporate?â
You go through 2 other CDs and look at both men questioningly.Â
âThese are literally plucked out of my high school playlist that I illegally downloaded,â you state, given that music streaming sites werenât a thing over a decade ago. âWhy do you have them in CDs? And did you even know these songs back then?â
âYes, because we listened to your playlist when you werenât around,â Jimin confesses, earning him a flick on the arm.Â
âYou went through my computer? You were in my room?!â You yell.
âDonât be dramatic,â Jimin rolls his eyes. âIt was a boring room, there was nothing to see. We just wanted your music because they were cool, but Iâd never admit it.â
âIâm sure,â you shake your head. âBut it was my ex, remember? He was a new kid from the US and he got me into these emo rock bands and I thought they were cool, too. He downloaded them illegally for me and I just jammed to those songs all the time even after we broke up.â
âWe know. Jungkook and I could hear it from my bedroom,â Jimin says, âwhich is why we used to sneak in and listen when you werenât around.â
âIs that why you put them in a mixtape? So you could listen to them whenever you wanted?â You ask, turning to Jungkook because between the both of them, heâs definitely the one whoâd know how to do this.
âYeah, Kook. Why did you make these mixtapes when neither of us had a portable CD player⊠but my sister did?â Jimin presses, cocked eyebrow and smug face on display.
Youâre looking at him now, and itâs a curious look that Jungkook canât resist.
âI just thought to put your most played ones in CDs,â he shyly admits, âand uh, planned on giving them to you before you left for college. But I chickened out so I just left them in a box in my room that I brought to Seoul. Iâd forgotten all about it until Jimin raided my studio and found them.â
âYou⊠you made me mixtapes? When you were 15?â You ask.
â___, I think Iâve established enough that I had a huge crush on you when I was a teenager,â he turns to you and laughs.Â
Itâs a little embarrassing even if heâs already dating you. It still feels surreal sometimes, as he thinks of his growing up years and how he always looked forward to sleeping over at Jiminâs place and then catching glimpses of you. There were the times when youâd watch movies with them in the living room, and then heâd help you clean up in the kitchen so he could spend more time with you.
That was over 10 years ago and so much has changed, but the admiration he felt for you never dwindled. There was always that image of you looking happy. He kept that version of you in his mind, even when you had your boyfriends. He just wanted to remember your smile, and now he gets to be the reason for it, like now.
âItâs just⊠itâs very sweet and thoughtful,â you say softly.Â
âI⊠Well⊠I took interest in the things you liked. I guess that happens when you like someone.â
âTold you heâs a romantic,â Jimin nudges you.Â
Between the fairy tattoo he designed and did on your shoulder, the dinner and picnic dates he takes you to despite both your busy schedules, and the way he holds you so close to him whenever and wherever he can, you can definitely say that Jungkook is a romantic.
Itâs only been three months but it feels as if youâve been dating him for longer, given the overflow of affection heâs been giving you. Itâs in the way he always holds your hand and kisses you so passionately. Itâs in his encouraging words and the way he spoils you with the littlest things.Â
Itâs refreshing to be with him. He has boyish charms that have become even sexier with his slightly long hair and the lip ring that he recently got. And whatever heâs wearing, thereâs just something so comfortably sexy about him thatâs both warm and exciting, and you often find yourself swarmed in butterflies whenever he talks about you.
Itâs only been three months but itâs a relationship youâre still slowly being open about. Your friends were definitely surprised. Hoseok fell off the couch with all his body movements; Jin spat out his drink; Yoongi gasped, then followed it up with a teasing smirk; So-Hee and Na-eun gushed over how Jungkook treats you, and took the chance to say how heâs gotten more handsome over the years.Â
You asked them if it was that shocking for you to be dating someone younger - and your brotherâs best friend at that - and while they said it was a bit unexpected, what really got them was how different Jungkook is from your exes. Heâs not some corporate man with ambitions, they pointed out. His life is less structured, too, given his freelancing career and gig at the tattoo parlor. Heâs definitely a lot more laid-back and more casual than theyâre used to.Â
They were short of remarking that Jungkookâs lifestyle isnât as stable and secure as what you normally go for, and they wouldnât be wrong. Itâs a thought youâve had before, and something even he brought up because he didnât want you thinking that he canât keep up with you. But youâd been the one to point out to your friends that stability can come in different forms. With how Jungkook has been so dependable and assuring, thatâs given you more security than you ever thought.Â
But itâs not something thatâs easy to explain. Maybe your friends could understand. Theyâve made careers in different industries, after all, with short term jobs forming part of their resume. But your parents are of a different generation and mindset. Stability for them means one thing, and they raised you to want the same thing in the same way.Â
Which is why itâs already been three months, and you still havenât told them about you and Jungkook.Â
âI started young,â he laughs, pulling you out of your thoughts as he takes your hand and interlocks his fingers with yours. âI used to just choose my moments of romance but with you, Iâm romantic all the time.â
âReally? Does being a flirt count as being romantic?â You cock an eyebrow.
Because thatâs what he is. He likes to tease and call you out when he affects you. He likes to charm and then edge you until youâre pleading for him to do more.Â
âDefinitely! I mean, Iâm out here living my teenage dream, you know?â He winks at you. âNot just anyone gets to say that theyâre dating the person they had a crush on when they were 13.â
âOh god, here we go again,â Jimin groans, earning him a laugh from you and Jungkook.
But even if your brother fake-gags at your not-so private displays of affection, you know deep down that heâs happy for you and his best friend. The two most important people in his life found comfort in each other, and he gets to witness and bask in that.Â
He also gets to brag that it all happened because of him.Â
You spend the next hour jamming to all your favorite emo rock songs because Jungkook wasnât kidding - he really did include all of the ones you had on repeat from your playlist. It takes you back to over 10 years ago of playing the music so loud while youâre in your pajamas, jumping on your bed and singing your lungs out. They donât really remind you of your ex-boyfriend. That was a short-lived relationship that only really had you appreciating the songs he shared and not much more.Â
Your boss doesnât reach out to you until a half hour later. Heâs taken to sending you messages instead, and when he does, youâre back to typing away on your laptop, to the displeasure of both men.Â
They donât call you out this time and instead leave you be. Until, of course, it hinders you from enjoying yourself.
The car has stopped but youâre still on your laptop, double checking figures. Jimin has stepped out after telling you that heâll throw your laptop in the ocean if you donât stop, but Jungkook stays with you inside the car. He bops his head and hums to the music that neither of you could barely hear. He picks on his fingers and yelps at the hangnail he pulls out. He opens the window and shoos away a bug, then hangs out his head to feel the late morning sun.
âKook, you can go out if youâre bored,â you say, your eyes still glued to your screen. âYou donât have to stay with me here.â
âBut I want to,â he responds. âIâm not leaving until you do, not when you said weâre spending the week free from work and stress.â
âI just need to get this done,â you sigh, rechecking your stats for the third time and then aligning the table. âIâll be finished soon.â
âYou said that 15 minutes ago,â he points out, not wanting to sound like heâs complaining, although he might as well be.Â
âItâs justââ
âYouâve done your part, babe. Youâve encoded the figures and cross-checked the targets and objectives. Writing the rest of that report and formatting it isnât your job anymore,â Jungkook says. âYou werenât even supposed to do those. Youâre not on the clock. Youâre on leave, and you deserve this break.â
âI hate that I have to work, too, but itâs not something I just canât do, not when my boss is calling and expecting me to do all this,â you groan.Â
You see his eyebrows furrow and you get defensive.Â
âYou know what, nevermind. You work solo, you answer to no one, you donât have to prove yourself to corporate assholes. You wonât get it.â
You sigh once more and return to reviewing the conclusion, but the sudden silence is unnerving. You glance at Jungkook and see the look on his face - itâs not sadness but disappointment, and itâs one you donât see very often on him.
Youâre about to apologize when he speaks, his voice soft and low, as if speaking is difficult for him.
âI work with so many clients on a daily basis, with more than half of them setting deadlines that they donât even follow and demanding so many things so yes, I get it,â he says. âBut I put my foot down when I need to, because I learned a long time ago that I shouldnât let people walk all over me. I know youâre up against a lot of things and you may feel like your hands are tied but they arenât. A break wonât hurt you. And you know you deserve it. We deserve your attention, too.â
Your heart cracks at his words. Even more at the way he looks, as you see that all he wants is to spend time with you. Heâs been busy, too. Heâs spent the last few nights at his studio, buried deep in his projects because he said he wanted to focus on you this week. And you know that heâll keep his word like he always does. Jungkook is dedicated to his work but he focuses on you when he says he will. Youâre the one not loyal to what you say.
âKook, Iâmââ
âJust do what you have to do,â he interjects, his eyes downcast now. âIâll be outside with Jimin. Come out when youâre done. You like it here, so donât worry. We wonât leave until youâve come down.â
Jungkook exits the car before you can say anything. You watch him walk down the stony path towards the ocean.
You hadnât even realized youâre here.Â
Youâre at Cheongsapo, with the pebble beach just meters away being one you all went to as kids. Jungkookâs older brother used to drive you here during summer, and you all enjoyed the calmness of the place. You used to bet on who would treat ice cream by playing rounds of stone skipping, with Jimin winning every single time. You remember how you and Jungkook taught each other how to do it, and then tag-teamed against your brother so he could finally treat you both that one time.Â
Whenever youâd visit Busan during your college breaks, youâd always come down here with your friends, with Jungkook and Jimin in tow. Youâd visit at sunset and hold out your sparklers, then navigate the terrain at night and laugh about who tripped and slipped on the way back.Â
Jungkookâs right. You like this place. It holds so many memories of your youth, and you find yourself constantly reminiscing, as you try to recall his place in your life back then.Â
You mentally smack yourself. He didnât deserve your dismissal. He didnât deserve the way you spoke to him. Heâs been trying to help, especially with how busy youâve been these past several weeks. You were supposed to work from home while you housesat your parentsâ house but Jimin convinced you to take your untouched leaves when Jungkook decided to come, and then they both called it a mini-break.
And maybe you need it, considering that all this preoccupation with work has caused you to snap at your boyfriend when all he wanted to do was ease your mind.
So you get out of the car and head to him.Â
Thereâs a small forest to pass through and a steep staircase to maneuver, but you manage. You look out to see Jimin already throwing stones and Jungkook standing by, reacting to every gliding pebble on the water. You spare a few seconds to admire him from the back, with his plain white shirt and light gray lounge pants, accentuating a figure that has you weak in the knees. His hands are in his pockets and his slightly long locks are in a half-bun, and he looks every bit of comfort in this place that holds so much of your years growing up.
You walk to where he is and wrap your arms around him from behind. He stills but he doesnât say anything. You savor his natural scent and the way the tips of his hair tickle your face. You bask in the taut figure that somehow softens under your touch. Once you feel him relax a little, you tilt your head and whisper in his ear.Â
âIâm sorry for snapping at you. You didnât deserve that.â
He remains quiet and unmoving. All you can hear are the sounds of the waves and Jiminâs cheering from some meters away.
âI just got caught up with work but Iâm done with it. It wasnât right of me to neglect you when I promised I was gonna take a break and spend time with you,â you continue.
Your voice is low and Jungkook could hear your pout. Just a little bit more and heâll give in.
âYou look so hot today and I just want toââ
âYah!â He whines, finally returning your affection and caressing your arms that are now wrapped around him tightly. âDonât tease me.â
âHmm, that caught your attention, huh?â You giggle, lightly kissing his neck.
He shivers at the act, and he laughs at himself for how whipped he is for you, giving in so quickly.
âYou know it would,â he huffs, turning around to face you now.
You still have that pout and he just wants to kiss it off you.
âHow was walking down the steep staircase?â He asks, knowing that was your only non-favorite thing about this place.Â
âI tripped on a step but Iâm fine,â you proudly smile now.Â
âYou shouldâve called me,â he frowns now.Â
âBut you were upset with me!â
âSo? Doesnât mean I wouldnât help you down the stairs and risk you tripping. You know how those steps are. And the pebbles can sometimes be slippery. You can trip here, too, andâ what?â
âNothing. Youâre sexy when youâre worried about me,â you say nonchalantly.
âUgh, come here,â he groans, pulling you in a hug, one that you fall into immediately. âIâll always worry about you. And Iâll always help you, even if Iâm upset.â
âI know,â you sigh. âIâm sorry again. But Iâve laid off the report now. I told Mr. Soo I shall not be disturbed anymore for the rest of my leave.â
âGood,â Jungkook hums, pulling away to face you now. âBecause I really want to know what you wanted to do.â
âAh, many things, Jeon Jungkook,â you smirk. âBut Iâll maybe settle for this first.â
You lean in and kiss him - deep enough to have him moan against your lips, and you suddenly canât wait until you can do more.
âOh, my eyes!â Jimin squeals, prompting you to look at him with his arm covering his face.
Jungkook only laughs but you scowl at your brother.
âYouâre so dramatic,â you roll your eyes. âYouâve seen worse.â
âAnd Iâve erased that image of my sister and my best friend swallowing each otherâs faces from my mind. Please donât remind me again,â he groans. âBut anyway, are you tolerable again?â
âYes,â you frown. âI think,â you mutter, turning to Jungkook.
âYouâre alright,â he teases, before he wraps his arm around you and pulls you close. âNow Jimin here wants to reassert his dominance as the stone-skipping king. You game for a match?â
âDo I have a choice?â You cock your eyebrow.
âNo. So okay, same rules,â your brother announces. âLoser treats everyone to coffee and pastry. We all know it wonât be me.â
âBrat,â you say under your breath.Â
But heâs not wrong. He dominates and Jungkook ends up losing. The wink he makes tells you he let you win. And though you like to play fair, you wonât lie and say his teasing smirk definitely turned you on.
You spend the rest of your morning enjoying iced coffee while overlooking the beach, then you head to your favorite seafood restaurant for lunch. You go to your usual market for ingredients for the week, including tonightâs dinner that your mother will be preparing. She wanted to cook for all of you before they flew out, she said, and that got you excited.Â
Itâs refreshing to walk through the streets and spots of your childhood and reminisce with your brother and boyfriend. The memories take on different forms this time, as Jungkook tells you things from his perspective.Â
You remember that one time you scolded them for sneaking out on a school night and then picking them up at an alley with Jin driving you. Jungkook says he liked how caring and understanding you were then; you said youâd cover for them after flicking their foreheads.Â
Thereâs that summer when you got your friends to buy from Jimin and Jungkookâs ice pop stand so they could buy these skateboards that neither of your parents wanted to get for them. Jungkook recalls how you complimented his recipe and told everyone he made them so that theyâd praise him, too.Â
Thereâs that winter when, after your brotherâs begging, you had him and Jungkook join you and your friendsâ bonfire night at one of your secret beach spots. Jungkook points out that you always made sure that as the youngest ones there, they were warm and well-fed.Â
And then there were their sleepovers when youâd join them play video games and watch horror movies in the living room. Jungkook gushes at how pretty you looked and how youâd always prepare them popcorn and drinks. He outs you as the one who puts the blanket over him and Jimin when they fall asleep on the couch.Â
âI tend to forget a lot of things but I remember when theyâre about you,â he mumbles as he starts the drive to your house. âItâs just always stuck with me. Please donât be weirded out.â
You giggle but assure him that you arenât. You understand him - there are things and people and moments that naturally stick with you, and theyâre the ones you hold dear, too.Â
He was a kid with a crush and his attention was often on you, and you suppose that given how youâd felt comfortable around him then, it was also maybe natural that youâd feel the same way now that youâre both older. It just so happened that he ended up looking as attractive as he did, and thatâs just an added bonus.Â
Jungkook drops you and Jimin home before he drives three blocks away to his parentsâ house. Heâll greet them first before heading to your place, he says, excited for your momâs cooking that he always enjoyed.Â
Itâs been some time since you last saw them. They donât always drive out to Seoul, only doing so to watch Jiminâs shows, and you havenât had time to go home, either. Plus, you had an injured brother to take care of, and heâs also really the topic of every conversation youâve had with them these past months.Â
And there are no bad feelings there. Heâs had injuries and illnesses that had them worried, and youâre pretty much as unproblematic and predictable as any eldest child could get. You think youâre that monotonous or unexciting, too, and you suppose that just meant they didnât feel the need to check on you as much as they did with Jimin.
But you express your longing once they offer you their hugs. You say how you miss your momâs cooking and your dadâs baking, which is code for saying that youâve missed them, too.Â
You get your stuff to your room and sigh in relief at the comfort it still gives you. Not much has changed between your double bed, your desk, your beanbag, and the large cork board of photos on your wall. You pin the Polaroids from earlier, deciding to keep the ones of you and Jungkook for your place back in Seoul.Â
You huff this time, unsure how youâll open the discussion of you dating your younger brotherâs best friend to your parents. Theyâve known him since he was a kid; they watched him get into all kinds of trouble with their son, and were there for his milestones, too.Â
Jungkook was always Jiminâs partner-in-crime; they were two peas in a pod who went through everything together. Now itâs you and him and you donât really know how theyâll take it.Â
But you brush it off for now and think itâs a conversation for later, or maybe when they come back from their trip. You intended on telling them in person, which is why theyâre still in the dark. Itâs just a matter of how youâll say it.
You head downstairs and take in the scent of seafood soft tofu stew. The two boys are already at the kitchen counter, munching on the rolled omelet that they shouldnât even be having yet. But your mom lets them, as Jimin talks about his new agency and shows videos of him doing some choreographies.
You stand next to Jungkook, who sneakily feeds you. You donât know why you get flustered at the act, even more when he whispers in your ear.Â
âSo, I finally get to see your room with your permission,â he cheekily smiles. âI promised Jimin a few rounds of Overwatch before going to you.â
You merely laugh and tell him that your dadâs asking him something.
âSo, Jungkook. How has work been? Jimin tells us youâve been getting more projects recently,â your old man asks.Â
âAh, yes, uncle,â he responds. âIâm getting more clients and exposure now. It took a while but itâs all going well.â
âThatâs good. Although I always wondered why you never thought of joining a firm. Doesnât that mean a more consistent client base? And better for you financially, too.â
âWell, I get to choose my clients and my projects as a freelancer,â Jungkook explains. âI control my time. And it allows me to take appointments at the tattoo parlor.â
âOh, right, your hobby,â your dad nods. âI guess having multiple sources of income is the new trend these days.â
Jungkook just hums in agreement, already used to your dadâs frame of thought when it comes to a career. So are you, because itâs often the first thing he picks up on with your boyfriends. Each of your partners just happened to be working in corporate so there was never this line of questioning followed by an awkward silence.Â
But Jungkook is just your brotherâs best friend, as far as they know. You wonder how theyâd react once you finally tell them the truth.
You donât completely fault your dad, though. Itâs less about judgment and more about practicality. He and your mom came from the generation that believed survival and security mattered more than passion. They always thought the latter could come later on in life, which is why they opened their own cafe not long ago, at a time when they were already pretty secure. You suppose itâs his way of looking out for you, which is why heâs always been concerned about your partnerâs occupation.
The conversation changes, as the focus now turns to your parents and what theyâve been up to. You assist your mom in the kitchen while the men hang around, helping when theyâre called upon. Jungkook stands near you, asking if you need him and attempting to feed you with a dumpling this time, but you manage to feed yourself and he merely looks at you in understanding.
Dinner is finally ready and you all head to the dining table. You take the seat next to your mom, across from Jungkook, and he looks at you curiously but you offer him an apologetic smile. You only told him that youâll tell your parents about your relationship in person, which you planned on doing.Â
That is, until your parents bring up your friends.
âSweetie, Jinâs son is so adorable,â your mom chirps. âI saw the pictures on Facebook and the little one took after his father so much. I can imagine how happy he and his wife are.â
The topic of your dear friend and his family injects energy into you. You say how Jinâs been bragging about his mini-me but that the nursery you helped put together looks so beautiful. You were all there when his wife gave birth a few weeks ago and though youâre still unsure about having kids, you wonât deny how much it warmed your heart when Seo-yoonâs tiny fingers wrapped around your thumb. Itâs not something you say though, as your mom eventually mentions Na-eun and her fiancĂ©.Â
âI read that heâs been promoted as Director of their company,â she says.Â
Your dad pipes in that So-Heeâs new boyfriend is apparently the son of one of his former colleagues, and youâre quite frankly over the conversations about your friendsâ partners. The insinuations arenât lost on you.
âHow do you even know these things?â You groan.
âFacebook,â your mom replies. âOf course Iâm friends with all your friends. And itâs nice to know how well theyâre doing since we donât get to see them much anymore. Youâve reached that age of settling down, after all.â
âI guess,â you hum, no longer interested in the conversation. Jiminâs roll of his eyes tells you he feels the same. âLots of good things are happening for them.â
You donât mean to sound bitter and you arenât. You adore your friends and genuinely love that things are looking out for them. Youâre not the same person from months ago who felt lost and falling behind amongst them. Sure, things could be better career-wise, but you havenât felt this much security in yourself and your relationship until Jungkook. Explaining why is a different thing altogether.
âWhat about you?â Your dad asks. âI know weâve been calling every week to ask about your brother but we havenât been checking in on you. Iâm sorry, dear,â he continues, his eyes softening. âIs there anything new in your life?â
If the earlier conversations hadnât happened, perhaps youâd willingly hint on the newest thing in your life, which is the relationship you have with the man currently looking at you with his doe-eyes in anticipation.Â
But they did, and you know mentioning your friendsâ partners was their way of subtly pressuring you about being with someone of similar stature. And youâre not really in the mood for that right now.Â
So you end up doing the stupidest thing you possibly could, and thatâs to lie.Â
âNot really,â you say, hating the prolonged silence that follows.Â
And as you look at Jungkook across from you, you see his face fall, and you hate even more that itâs because of you.Â
Your lack of a follow-up prompts your parents to move on. They know that when youâre in the mood to talk, you will and when youâre quite passive, it means you arenât.Â
Your mom turns to Jungkook instead and asks him what else heâs up to other than his various jobs and looking after Jimin. He looks at you before his gaze shifts towards them.
âNot much else, auntie,â he replies.Â
The crack of your heart knows you completely messed up, because if it stings like this, then you know it hurt him even more.
âOh, is there no one special in your life?â She asks, as she often does. Given that she treats Jungkook as part of the family, sheâs lost all filter when it comes to him, too. âI recently met with my friend and her daughter. Sheâs such a lovely young woman, Kook, sheâs brilliant and oh so charming. Sheâs in Busan for the week, too. Do you want toââ
âIs it time for dessert?â Jimin butts in, not wanting this conversation to continue.Â
He knows Jungkook wouldnât know how to turn your mother down, and if he even slightly entertains the idea to appease her, youâd be the one upset, even if you technically put this upon yourself. Jimin already sees you a bit uncomfortable, and if thereâs anything he can do to not make this worse for you and his best friend, itâs to be a brat.Â
âOh, yes. Your father made an apple pie and some ice cream,â she says. âLet meââ
âIâll get it,â you offer, standing up from your seat now.
You donât want to know what your momâs other propositions would be. Youâre sure sheâll find some personâs son to match you with, given that sheâs done that a few times after your breakup with Namjoon. Youâre also not ready for Jungkook to agree with her about meeting someone, even if you know he wonât mean it.
Which is really stupid because if youâd just told them the truth, then youâll be having a completely different conversation, although youâre unsure if youâre ready for that one, too. But at least Jungkook wouldnât look as upset as he does right now, as heâs resorted to picking on his food instead of finishing it, which tells you that heâs lost his appetite and thatâs never a good thing.Â
You go to the kitchen to slice the pie and scoop the ice cream. You do it so slowly to lengthen the time before youâre back there, only because you donât want to know what else theyâre talking about.Â
Youâre in the middle of cursing yourself when you feel the sting of a tiny pinch on your arm, and you yelp in pain and smack your brotherâs chest in reflex.
âOw!â You yell, frowning at the man before you and ignoring your motherâs order to âbehave,â even if theyâre used to you two quarreling.Â
âYou deserve that,â Jimin scowls at you. âBecause what the fuck was that?!â
âI know,â you sigh, glancing at Jungkook whoâs trying his best to be interested in what your parents are saying. âI⊠froze. You know what they wanted to hear, Chim. All those things about my friendsâ boyfriends and what they do? I just didnât want them to compare them to what Jungkook does if I tell them.â
âWhy, whatâs wrong with what he does?â Your brother raises an eyebrow.
âNothing. Itâs just⊠you know how focused they are on career stability and shit like that,â you try to explain. âYou heard what dad was telling him earlier. I just didnât want Jungkook to hear any underhanded comments from them and then feel bad about it.â
âAnd you think denying that youâre dating is any better?â He chides. âThatâs literally worse!â
âIââ
âJungkook knows how our parents are. And after you got together, he already anticipated that theyâd question how heâll be able to sustain your life together once you told them about your relationship,â Jimin explains. âHe was ready for it. I doubt he anticipated thisâŠâ
You stand there, the crack in your heart getting deeper and bigger as the seconds pass. You hadnât realized that Jungkook was already confiding in Jimin about any concerns heâd have about facing your parents. You suppose he would, given that you said youâd tell them when you saw them the one time that Jungkook asked if they knew, and you didnât raise it again after. Living in your bubble together seemed more important, and youâd forgotten to mentally prepare yourself for this conversation.
âChim, I fucked up,â you pout.Â
If it were about anything else, Jimin would push it. Itâs how you always were, and youâve reached that point in your relationship where you could call each other out and know it comes from a good place. But he doesnât want to do this today, not when youâre already sad and guilty and he doesnât want you to feel worse. He doesnât want to take sides, even if heâll admit that you were in the wrong, but he doesnât want to antagonize you either.
âHey,â he nudges your arm. âItâs not the end of the world. Youâre both gonna figure it out. I donât know how hard heâll take this but heâs a really soft-hearted person, so just⊠keep that in mind, okay?â
You nod, wanting to believe that youâll be able to fix it.Â
âAnd donât hate yourself too much,â your brother adds. âHeâs really, really into you. I just know he wonât be able to resist you.â
You nod again but you think that just makes it worse. You doubt he expected that out of all the people to disappoint him, it would be you. Yet here you are.Â
You and Jimin return to the table with the plated desserts. You hand one to Jungkook but he doesnât acknowledge you. He doesnât meet your eyes either when itâs all you try to do. He peacefully eats his apple pie while you feign interest at your parents talking about their recent weekend at a spa.Â
When everyoneâs done, he helps Jimin clean up. Itâs how you know that Jungkookâs considered part of the family, as your parents donât stop him from doing so, unlike when it comes to other guests or your friends.Â
You watch helplessly as he washes the dishes, turning down your offer to help. You take the rest of the plates and walk towards him instead, standing close so you could place them in the sink. He just moves his arms to give you space then returns to his task, not sparing you a glance.Â
You stay with your parents in the dining area to talk about their trip. They leave you with important documents and give you instructions should anything bad happen to them while theyâre away, as they always do whenever they go on a trip. Everything is your responsibility as the eldest, they remind you.Â
They finally go to their room to continue packing and you sit on the corner of the couch where Jimin and Jungkook have just finished watching some video of a guy reacting to other videos. You constantly glance at your boyfriend but he seems to be intent on not giving you attention because heâs not like this - he always wants to be close to you, needing his hand to be touching your arm or your thigh or even your hair, and his pretty eyes locked on you. But not tonight.
You recall how months ago, you avoided him because of what you started to feel. And perhaps this is how he felt then - helpless, unsure, and desperate for you to be next to him again.Â
You find the tiniest bit of courage and call out his name, hoping heâd at least turn to you this time.Â
âKook, Iâmââ
âHey, we should probably play now so we finish early,â Jungkook nudges Jiminâs knee. âItâs been a long day; I donât really want to stay up late.â
Your brother looks at you in apology as he responds to the man on his left in agreement. They both head up, leaving you rooted in your seat, wishing that Jungkook would turn around to tell you that he doesnât mean creating this distance, but he doesnât.Â
And you wouldnât blame him. Youâd stay away from you, too.
You end up watching Aliens on your own, crouched on your corner of the couch with the large blanket over you. You give up after an hour, once the movie starts getting intense and scary though. Thereâs no Jungkook to hold you during the jumpscares, or to tease you about your screaming, or to assure you that heâll protect you from all types of monsters.Â
Thereâs no Jungkook next to you but you want him there, and itâs another half hour later when you decide that youâre not going to bed without speaking to him.Â
You hate sleeping sad and upset. You donât like ending the day not being on good terms with him. There are so many things you want to tell him but more than anything, you just want to hold him close. He always said he liked that, because even during the times when thereâs so much to say or feel, falling into each otherâs arms is the easiest thing to do. It says enough. It shows enough. And youâve both survived misunderstandings and stressful moments by holding each other, and then holding each other closer.
Walking up the stairs and towards Jiminâs room, the nerves kick in. Jungkook has been ignoring you the whole evening and youâre unsure if heâs willing to hear you out.Â
But you try, as you knock on the door, your heart beating fast when it slowly opens. Your brotherâs downcast eyes meet you and you donât need to say anything else.Â
He opens the door wider then turns to the man lying on a mattress on the floor.
âKook, my sisterâs looking for you.â
You glance at him, dressed in that black tank top that always made you breathless, but once again, he avoids your gaze. But he does stand up after a nudge on the foot from your brother and walks over to you.
âCan we, uhâŠâ you gesture towards the room just across the hallway.
He doesnât say anything but he doesnât shut you out, which is a good thing. You take it as your cue to start walking and you hear his footsteps right behind you.Â
You let him in then close the door behind him. Thereâs so much you want to say, like youâre sorry and that you were stupid, that you didnât mean to deny him but that you didnât know how to tell your parents, or what you were even nervous about. You want to say that you just want to spend tonight wrapped up in his arms and apologizing in all the ways that you can.
But instead of uttering the words, your throat dries up. Seeing him standing there with that upset and disinterested look on his face breaks you a little. So you reach out, your hands pressing gently on his chest to try to feel him, to be close to him, hopefully to hold him and make your mistake go away.Â
âKook, IâŠâ you tremble, trying so hard to find the words.
Jungkook looks back at you, your face nervous and unsure, unlike his thatâs probably still painted with disappointment.Â
He still doesnât know what to make of your denial. Heâs been trying to see things from your point of view all evening, but doing so only in his head because verbalizing them, especially to his best friend, makes it sting a bit more. Maybe Jimin can explain on your behalf but that would just confirm to Jungkook one of two things - that you donât really intend on telling your parents about both of you for whatever reason he canât comprehend, or you donât think he measures up to their expectations and for that, you might just think heâs not good enough for you.Â
He doesnât think heâs ready for that, so he shuts Jimin down when he asks. They watched videos earlier to have something to laugh about but he was faking it. He suggested playing a game just so he wouldnât respond to you calling him earlier but all theyâve done since going to the room is lie in silence.Â
Jungkook doesnât want to talk about it with his best friend. And he certainly doesnât want to talk about it with you. He doesnât want an explanation right now. Itâs not what he wants to hear.Â
And it seems as if itâs something youâre even struggling to give him, as you stand there quivering, your hands slowly trying to pull him closer to you.Â
Itâs what you usually do when you canât find the words to express something - when youâre stressed and frustrated, when you want to patch things up after a small misunderstanding, when you want his comfort. And he always loved it when you did. He always willingly gave you that hug and that kiss and those whispers of âitâs okayâ and âweâre okayâ and âIâm just here.âÂ
But not tonight, not when thereâs this unnamed thing thatâs eating him inside, and not even you can fix it.Â
âI donât⊠I donât really wanna do this right now,â he mutters, taking your hands to slowly slide them off him.Â
The look of hurt in your eyes is one thatâll probably haunt him for a while, but heâll learn to deal with that. Itâs better than talking with you about something that you donât even know how to express.Â
This isnât like him. Itâs not like him to be upset at you like this, to not want to comfort you, to not want to be around you. This messes him up, too, and all he can do is step away and walk out.
He doesnât really wanna be here, he thinks to himself as he enters the room just across, to the surprise of Jimin who half expected both of you to have made up. Jungkook would go home if he only brought his keys and it wasnât too late to ask his parents to open the door for him.
But his best friendâs floor mattress will do for now. And so Jungkook puts on his earpods and plays whatever music is loud enough to shut out the thought of you until he falls asleep.Â
In the other room, you lay in your bed in complete silence. You donât want to cry, only because heâs not there to wipe your tears away. And you donât ever want to know what thatâs like, so you donât. You keep the tears at bay and force yourself to drift away.Â
You jerk awake the next morning to your mother knocking on your door. You promised to do errands with her today, so you get off the bed and yell out that youâll just fix up.
âNo rush, dear. Iâm still having breakfast with your father. You can join us when youâre ready.â
You head down and eat the pastries that they brought from the cafe. You donât have much appetite and these will suffice, but your mind goes to Jungkook and how he was craving kimchi fried rice and spam yesterday.Â
So thatâs what you make for him and Jimin. You even prepare iced coffee the way they like it. Youâre about to set the dish aside for them to heat up when you hear rushed footsteps down the stairs and you know theyâve woken up.
âWahhh, it smells so good,â Jimin exclaims as he walks over to the counter while his best friend sits on the table. âDid you make something, dad?â
âOh, your sister cooked for you and Jungkook,â your father hums. âItâs making me hungry now.â
âThereâs still some in here if you want,â you call out, with him responding that heâll get some later.
You serve the dish in two bowls. You hand one to Jimin and then place the other in front of Jungkook without sparing him a glance.Â
âIced coffee is in the refrigerator,â you tell them.Â
You hear Jiminâs little squeal before he gets them. âWhere you off to?â He asks.
âIâm running errands with mom.â
âMake sure you two make it in time for dinner, okay?â Your father says.
âOf course. I canât miss your steak, dad,â you give him a small smile.Â
âGood. I prepared meat good enough for five Actually, six. I count Jungkook as two people,â he laughs.Â
The thought of this comfort and familiarity hurts you because youâre the one who made Jungkook think otherwise. You see him smile at your fatherâs remark but you turn away when he looks your way. You know heâs still upset and you donât want to force it if heâs not yet ready to speak with you. You also havenât gotten over the way he pulled away from you last night, and so looking at him today is a little difficult.
âYouâre still joining us at the party, right?â Jimin asks.Â
Their friend, Hari, whom you know briefly dated Jungkook in high school, is celebrating her birthday tonight. Their group always looked to you as the cool sister so youâre always invited to whatever theyâve got going, and while the three of you talked about attending later, after what you did, you doubt Jungkook would want you to spoil his evening. Youâre also not exactly in the partying mood for obvious reasons.
âIâll pass, Chim,â you respond. âYou guys should have a best friend night.â
You go back to your room to fix up before joining your mother to head out.Â
Back in the dining room, Jimin nudges Jungkookâs knee.
âSheâs still playing favorites,â he playfully rolls his eyes as he gestures to the generous amount of spam in his best friendâs bowl compared to his decent serving.Â
Jungkook just hums, guilt forming that he didnât even thank you for this because he really has been craving it. Before any of them could say anything more, your father speaks up.
âYour sister okay, son?â
âUh, yeah? Why wouldnât she be?â Jimin nervously answers.
âShe just doesnât seem like herself, thatâs all,â your old man replies.
âMaybe itâs work. Itâs been tough lately,â your brother reasons.Â
âBut sheâs more tired and frustrated when it comes to work but thatâs not what she is. Maybe itâs a guy.â
At this, Jungkook chokes on his food, and heâs glad your father doesnât react.
âWhat makes you think so?â Jimin asks, his eyes flitting to his best friend.
âHmm, it just seems different,â your father insists. âOr maybe itâs just wishful thinking on my end. She hasnât introduced anyone since Namjoon. And I wish she would, just so we know sheâs moved on, you know? And that the breakup isnât still hurting her.â
âShe has, and it doesnât affect her anymore,â Jimin confirms, certain of at least that bit.
âThen why hasnât she introduced anyone yet?â
âMaybe itâs because you really liked Namjoon, and he seems to be your standard so ___ is just probably just taking her time.â
âWell itâs because heâs smart and stable and very self-assured andââ
âAlso very much married. And a soon-to-be father,â Jimin interjects, already being protective of you.Â
He wonders now if this is how your parents talk about him to you, and that youâve always just protected him from all of it.
âOh,â your father sighs. âIt couldâve been her.â
âBut it isnât and thatâs totally fine,â Jimin exclaims. âSheâs young and sheâs got time. And who knows, maybe thatâs not the life she wants, or at least not yet? If you could accept my version of happiness, you should be able to accept hers, too. And what does âstableâ even mean?â
âSomeone with ambition, with a direction,â your old man explains. âSomeone whoâs secure and financially capable of sustaining this good life that your mom and I gave you both.â
âThose are all the things she is, too, you know?â Jimin frowns. âAnd also, I love you, dad, but youâre old. By that I mean your thinking is old. Itâs outdated. You think stability is about prestige and money and I get that but⊠thatâs not everything. There are other things that matter to her and if you lessened the pressure a bit, youâd see that. Sheâs your daughter, donât you want her to be happy? To be loved?â
âOf course I do,â your father sighs.Â
âWell then donât let your version of what a good partner is dictate her life,â Jimin advises. âSheâs a grown up, she knows what she wants and how to get it. But sheâs also your daughter who doesnât want to worry or disappoint you. What if sheâs found someone who makes her happy and treats her right but sheâs nervous of what youâd think because of all these expectations you have of her?â
Jiminâs eyes flit to his best friend again whoâs quietly munching on his food but is clearly taking in this exchange. While Jimin still thinks you were wrong to deny your relationship, he at least hopes that Jungkook could understand what was going through your mind and it was all this.Â
âWell if she has then Iâd want to meet him,â your father insists.Â
âAnd maybe you will, once she stops feeling the pressure of what sheâs supposed to be for you and who sheâs supposed to date,â Jimin explains.Â
âI guess youâre right.â
âOf course Iâm right, dad,â Jimin groans. âI lived with her for months and she just⊠she worries about a lot of things. It would be nice if she doesnât worry about this. So please, stop with all the projections and underhanded remarks, okay? She sees right through you. Just let her live her life.â
A smile forms on your fatherâs face. It was never his intention to put all that pressure on you but he supposes you just accepted that it comes with the territory. But he realizes it shouldnât be. His sonâs right - heâs old. He and your mother worked hard so that you and your brother could have a life where you didnât have to worry about anything, but he supposes the intention got muddled along the way. At least you and Jimin have each other.
âI know you and your sister donât like to admit it but itâs really touching to see how similar you both are,â your father says.
âExcuse me, Iâm cooler and funnier and definitely more talented,â Jimin pouts.Â
âMaybe,â your old man laughs. âBut sheâs sat on that same chair, lecturing me and your mom about letting you live your life and now youâre doing the same. Sheâs your biggest advocate and your biggest protector. Itâs just nice to see how youâre the same for her.â
Running errands with your mother has always been your responsibility, but itâs once youâve hit your late-twenties mark that youâve come to appreciate it.Â
You learn a lot about the practical stuff like insurance and emergency funds and inheritance when you accompany her to the bank. Youâre also reminded that sometimes you have to spend more to make things last when she drops off her clothes at the laundry service and picks up the bag and shoes she had professionally cleaned. You also remember the important things like buying flowers and leaving them on your grandparentsâ graves.Â
Youâve just left the shopping center after she bought your father an anniversary gift, and her excitement over the satchel and perfume she got him has you smiling. You wonder how differently she feels for him 30 years later, and if this life they have together is everything she imagined it to be.
âWas it hard at the beginning? Being married to dad?â You ask.Â
âOf course, dear,â she answers. âBecause itâs how marriages typically go. Your father and I were together for two years before we got married and it was a big change. You just⊠learn to consider another person, and you get used to someone always being around you.â
âItâs a good thing you can stand each other then,â you chuckle.Â
âThatâs true,â she laughs back. âYouâd be surprised to know how many married couples canât. But we just always managed. And we had to be on each otherâs side, you know? Itâs the reason why weâve lasted as long as we have.â
She looks quite emotional as she says the words and itâs probably because of what theyâll be celebrating soon but she turns to you with a smile.
âYour fatherâs parents wanted me to become a housewife, a stay-at-home mom who just ran the household,â she continues. âBut I wanted to work so I could help my parents, and your father stood by my decision. He saw how working gave him financial freedom and he wanted that for me, too. And we just⊠worked hard. We fought a lot at the start because we were building our careers and raising a family but we knew it would all be worth it, as long as we stood by each other.â
âThen I suppose thatâs whatâs important in a partner, isnât it?â You say. âBeing dependable, being supportive, not⊠not what kind of career they have.â
âWell, a stable career helps,â she points out. âI mean, itâs how your father and I got to afford sending you and your brother to good schools. Itâs how we could afford trips as a family and how your father and I can be secure at this age without needing much help from our children.â
âBut thatâs also because you worked hard, plain and simple. And you and dad had each other and overcame whatever challenges you faced together. You canât say the same for all married couples,â you push.Â
âThatâs true. I mean, it wasnât like this during our parentsâ time. I guess people had less options then. The worldâs changed so much, hasnât it?â
âIt has,â you hum. âNot everyone cares much about their partnerâs upward mobility and stuff like that. They want to savor the good life their parents gave them. And because they work hard, too, they just want someone to enjoy it with them. You know, like me.â
Thereâs a beat of silence as your mother processes your words.Â
âIs that why it didnât work out with Namjoon?â She asks, reminding you that youâd only given them a general reason as to why things ended.
âWe spent too much time planning for our future that we kinda lost our way,â you explain. âI guess thatâs when I realized that I wanted someone to enjoy the moments with, regardless of what they do for a living. And weâll never know what life will throw our way and I need someone whoâll stand by me, the way Iâll stand by them. You know, cheesy things like that.â
You smile to yourself as you think about Jungkook and his shameless affection that he shows in so many ways. You enjoy the cheesiness but youâll deny it first before admitting it. But then again, he probably knows already. He pays attention to you after all.Â
âWell, I suppose thatâs why we wanted to give you and your brother a good and secure life, so that you can enjoy it,â your mother hums.
âExactly. You raised us well, mom. Weâre not gonna throw our lives away, however we choose to live it, and with whom,â you assure her.Â
She gives you a warm smile. She takes your hand at the stoplight and caresses it. Perhaps itâs the assurance you need, too.
You return home to your father preparing the meat for tonightâs dinner. Thereâs a platter of steak, vegetables, and sausages that heâs seasoning to grill, and you can imagine how happy this is gonna make Jungkook. He always liked it when your dad prepared dishes like this paired with your momâs spicy chicken soup, and you wish you could enjoy it together.Â
But youâre giving him space to feel what he feels and youâre doing the same, even if all you want to do is apologize. You havenât had an issue quite like this, so things are a little unfamiliar to you. You tried to talk to him last night but he wasnât ready, and youâre unsure when he will be.Â
You head towards the counter and cut up the vegetables for the soup before slicing the fruits. Youâre focused on your task, knowing how sharp the knives are, but itâs at the same time that your brother and Jungkook arrive. Seeing your boyfriend look as good as he does in that denim jacket-over tank top fit is so sinful; itâs a crime youâre not talking that it distracts you, and itâs what causes you to slice through your finger and yelp in pain.
âDid you hurt yourself, dear?â Your mom asks as she stirs the pot.Â
âYeah,â you say, placing your hand under running water.
Youâre about to ask Jimin to get the First Aid kit from the drawer but Jungkook gets to it first, knowing where it is.Â
He knows that your brother, whoâs terrified of blood, wonât help you, and despite your situation, Jungkook canât stand not helping. So he lathers an antiseptic once the bleeding has stopped, then he wraps a band-aid around it. Just like him, you focus your gaze on your finger. Or maybe youâre stuck on the way he tends to you. Or the fact that this is the most physical touch youâve done this past day when you normally canât take your hands off each other.Â
He sighs to himself. If he wasnât so hung up on his hurt feelings, heâd be able to tend to you better. This might not even have happened if heâd just spoken to you last night.Â
But he shakes the thought away. Heâs still upset. But heâll always want to take care of you; thatâs the one thing that wonât ever change.
âThank you,â you mumble, still not meeting his eyes.
âIâll do this,â he says, waiting for you to step aside before he takes your place.Â
âJungkook dear, do you mind helping me with the glazed potatoes after you finish that?â She asks.
âSure thing, auntie,â he replies.Â
You watch him work around the kitchen the way heâs done so many times before, and your heart stings at the sight because you want to be doing this with him, with your parents, in your family kitchen. But itâs not like you could talk to him right now, not when you donât know how to say what you want to say. So you head outside to where your dad is grilling the meat and help him instead.Â
Itâs not long after when dinner is ready, and youâre seated across Jungkook again. Itâs a little tense when you look at him when he looks away, but Jimin thankfully finds a way to keep the conversation light and focused on him.
Your parents insist that both men donât need to help clean up, and Jimin asks you if youâre really not going.
âYeah Iâll just⊠stay home, make sure mom and dad are packed well and just get everything in order for tomorrow,â you say, half lying.Â
âGee, you make me look like a useless child,â Jimin pouts.
âYouâre alright,â you hum. âYou can drive them to the airport tomorrow.â
âBut mom asked Jungkook to do that.â
âWell then you could just⊠make them a card or something,â you shrug.Â
Your brother sticks his tongue at you and you do the same.Â
âFine, weâll head out,â he announces.
âYou guys have fun,â you say softly, glancing at Jungkook before walking towards the sink to do your duty.Â
You turn to your brother. âCall me if you need me to pick you up. No driving drunk, okay?â
He salutes you in response then heads out after Jungkook.
Itâs uneventful after that. You help your parents with last minute packing then have a long shower. You lie on your bed and mindlessly watch some movie on your laptop hoping that youâll fall asleep soon, and that when you wake up, youâll find the strength to go to Jungkook and tell him that youâre sorry and that you donât want to go another day without him.Â
âHey, Jungkook. Dance with me.â
Jungkook looks up to find Hari and gives the same answer heâs given the last two times.
âSorry, Iâm injured,â he says.Â
She raises her eyebrow as if she doesnât believe him and he canât blame her; he doesnât exactly know how to act like it.
âOh, Jimin. There you are,â she chirps as the said man approaches the table. âDance with me.â
âSorry, I'm injured.â
âGreat. Itâs my birthday and I spot two hot guys in this party without girls around them and theyâre fake injured,â she scowls. âWhatâs up with you two?â
âIâm not in the mood,â Jungkook shrugs.
âIâm babysitting,â Jimin says, gesturing at his friend. âBut Mingyu and Eunwoo are right there. Go tell them to dance with you.â
âFine. Iâll get in line then,â she rolls her eyes then walks away.
âHow come no one believes me when I say Iâm injured?â Jungkook asks as he munches on the fried chicken wings his best friend got.
âBecause youâre a terrible actor. People believe me because Iâm believable,â Jimin hums.
âThey believe you because you posted all over social media that you hurt your ankle,â Jungkook corrects.Â
âYeah but that was like, half a year ago.â
âWhy are you even pretending youâre injured? You donât have to stay with me, you know? Go to the dance floor and have fun. Thatâs your thing.â
âWell, maybe Iâm also not in the mood because my best friendâs sulking,â Jimin frowns.Â
âGee, I wonder why.â
âYou know my sisterâs sorry, right?â
âSheâs ashamed, thatâs what she is. And Iâm just supposed to live with that.â
Jimin sighs as he watches his best friend mindlessly stare out onto the dance floor. Jungkookâs probably trying to rid himself of the image of both of you dancing and kissing and having fun if you were here. He could be making sense of what he feels, or his mind could also just be completely blank right now.
But what Jimin knows is that another glass of whiskey is something that Jungkook shouldnât be having, so he stops his best friend from ordering another one.
âYou might get drunk and then youâll call or go see her and then youâll say things youâll regret and then youâll hurt her and youâll get even more hurt and youâll have a harder time fixing things and then it just wonât stop and youâll feel stupid because youâre not talking over something you could easily fix,â Jimin heaves.Â
Itâs a lot to process but Jungkook knows that Jiminâs right. Heâll just get too emotional and wonât be able to control himself and despite what he feels, hurting you is the last thing he wants.
So he orders water instead, finishes it, then heads for the door.
âI donât wanna be here anymore,â he says. âI need to get some air.â
They end up at a park, the one that you used to hang at with your friends in high school. Jungkook knows because he always accompanied Jimin there when youâd tell him where to meet you. Itâs peaceful at this time of night and much more beautiful, too. Itâs no surprise he keeps thinking that youâre right next to him, with your head on his chest and laughing at his jokes.Â
âWhy is this affecting me so much?â He wonders out loud. âWhy am I so hurt and so stubborn?â
âBecause she said something she shouldnât have. But also because you put her on a pedestal,â Jimin answers. âShe made a mistake, and youâre free to fault her for it. I mean, anytime someone we care about hurts us, it sucks like hell. But you also have to think that maybe itâs affecting you as much as it does because sheâs always been faultless in your eyes and she isnât.â
The reality is a slap on the face, but one that Jungkook thinks he needs to have. You were everything he ever wanted and these past three months have been a bliss. But now that reality hits and you have to face the pressure thatâs part of your life, your humanness is showing. And thatâs what heâs always liked about you, isnât it? The imperfections and the flaws? Now that those are affecting him, itâs affecting him hard, and heâs having a hard time getting over it.
âMaybe once you accept that sheâs human and not just the dream youâve had since forever, then youâll realize that things like that happen but she never means to hurt you,â Jimin adds. âYou canât think that she does. You learn to work it out by facing it, Kook. You have to talk about it. You have to tell her it hurts and you have to listen to what she says, and then you forgive. Thatâs kind of how grownup relationships go.â
âGuess Iâve never had one before, huh?â
âMaybe they just didnât mean enough to hurt you.â
âThis means everything, then,â Jungkook sighs, as things get clearer in his mind. âBecause I think what hurts more now is not being next to her.â
âGreat! Then can both of you patch things up now?â Jimin beams, feeling hopeful. âI hate seeing both of you sad and so stupid. Plus, my parents are leaving tomorrow and you wonât have a buffer anymore. So please just talk.â
Jungkook admits feeling touched. He knows at the end of the day, Jimin cares about him and you more than anyone, and he probably misses being around both of you at the same time. Jungkook does, too, but he misses you the most and itâs only been a day.
âTomorrow,â he says. âI donât know what to tell her and itâs late. She might be asleep andââ
âNow youâre just making excuses,â Jimin crosses his arms.
âWell, what if I expect her to be the one to talk to me?â
âShe tried but you didnât want to, remember?â
âThat was last night. The wound was still fresh,â Jungkook pouts.Â
âOh god. I feel like Iâm dealing with children,â Jimin groans.
âImagine how we felt taking care of you,â Jungkook answers back.
âAt least I was just one person,â Jimin rolls his eyes.Â
âYour dramatics were equivalent to two people though.â
Both men bicker as they walk back to the car. It started to drizzle so they decided to go back to their respective homes. Jungkook could stay over at your place and maybe talk to you if he really wants to but heâs seriously just chickening out over it.Â
Heâs never had to make up with you because none of your previous arguments ever led to you not talking to each other, or him pushing you away. Heâs never had to spend a day ignoring you. And now, thereâs so much to say and so much to feel but he doesnât know how to approach it. Heâll need tonight to sort himself out and then heâll speak to you, maybe after he drives your parents to the airport. Or maybe on the way back.Â
He drops Jimin off; 30 seconds later, heâs home, too. Youâre so close but so far away just like you used to be. But at least this time he knows that when the next day comes, heâll have a chance to just pull you close and tell you he doesnât want to be like this ever again.
Thereâs an incessant knocking on your door, and as youâre about to yell out that youâre asleep, you realize it might be Jungkook. You sit up on your bed and when the door opens and you see your brother instead, your face falls.
âItâs just me, unfortunately,â he says. âKookâs back at his place.â
âOh,â you sigh. âWhy are you home so early? Itâs like, 11.â
âBecause after the third girl, his fake injury excuse wore off and people just didnât believe him. We looked like losers sitting on the table eating chicken,â Jimin chuckles. âSo we left after an hour then went to a park and I knocked some sense into him and now heâs not so upset anymore. And Iâm here to knock some sense into you, too.â
âI already know I made a mistake, Chim. Iâm⊠Iâm so fucking stupid. I just⊠donât want him to think that Iâm ashamed of him or that I donât think heâs enough or any of that. I mean Iâmââ
âCrazy about him, right?â
âI kinda am,â you smile softly.
âGood, because so is he and heâs hoping youâd go talk to him even if he says heâll talk to you tomorrow. Donât waste time anymore andââ
Youâre bolting off your bed and putting on your hoodie before your brother could finish his sentence.Â
âIf mom and dad look for me, tell them Iââ
âGot attacked by a clown in the sewer.â
You look at him incredulously then realize youâre wearing yellow then you frown.Â
âJust make up some excuse. Iâll⊠hopefully be back in the morning,â you say.
âAlright. Itâs drizzling though soââ
And just like that, youâre gone.
It takes all but 10 seconds for the rain to pour, and your hoodie and sweatpants are no match for it. You groan at your brother for underselling the weather but then again, you also should be thanking him for telling you what you needed to hear - that Jungkookâs not so upset anymore and that heâs hoping youâd speak to him.Â
Much as you think you wouldâve taken any chance today to patch things up, you also wouldâve frozen in front of him. You suppose you needed to know he was ready for you, and if he wouldnât tell you, then of course, Jimin would. You just really wish he had the foresight to know it would rain this hard but youâre probably asking for too much.Â
But Jungkookâs place is just a few blocks from yours so you power through. When you get there, you realize that you forgot your phone, so you make the stupid decision of climbing over the short fence and then hitting your cut finger in the process.Â
You have no time to feel pain though, as the next order of business is getting Jungkookâs attention. But before you can execute your plan of throwing rocks on his window, the front door opens, and you telepathically thank your brother who probably called your boyfriend to alert him that youâll be arriving at his place wet from the rain.
â___, what are you doing here?â Jungkook asks with worry painted on his face.Â
âI just⊠I needed to come and see you,â you manage to answer.
His face softens and you feel the hope bloom in your chest. He pulls you inside by the wrist and instructs you to quietly go up the stairs. Youâre at least not drenched but you still got wet, so he leads you to the bathroom to wash up. He tells you to wait as he gets you something to change in, and he returns after half a minute with a towel and a large shirt.
âCream and band-aid, for your wound,â he says, placing them on the counter. âMy roomâs the second door to the right, in case you forgot.â
You take him in, in his black tank top and shorts, his tongue playing with his lip ring the way he always does when heâs nervous. You manage to nod before he heads out, and you take a quick shower and then pull his oversized shirt over you.Â
You quietly walk to his room, knocking on the door first before opening it slowly. Itâs a bit dim but seeing him is all you need. After placing your clothes on the nearby chair, you look at him again.Â
He looks tired and worried. He also looks like he has so much to say but he doesnât know where to start. Thereâs a hint of sadness in his eyes but thereâs longing, too, and you suppose heâs mirroring how you look. You feel a lot. You also want to say a lot, but you donât know where or how to start.Â
So you do the one thing you know often works. You approach him then wrap your arms around his torso. You fall into his embrace as quickly as he falls into yours, as he seems to have the same idea. You hold him tighter and pull him closer. You flush your cheeks on his chest while he buries his face on your neck. You grip his top and he does the same with yours. Your heart beats fast in longing and you feel his own do the same, too.Â
Thereâs so much to feel and say but this is all you can do. And right now, itâs quite enough.Â
You loosen your grip, but only so you could nuzzle his neck while your arms wrap around them. He feels so warm and he smells so delicate and heâs all you need.
âYou knew I was coming?â You ask, turning to him
âJimin said you were on your way without an umbrella and your phone,â Jungkook chuckles. But his face softens as he wipes the lone tear that falls down your cheek. âYouâre lucky it wasnât a typhoon or anything.â
âI had to get to you,â you mumble.Â
âHe also told me he wasnât subtle in telling you to come here.â
âWell, he did say you wanted me to talk to you. And I wanted to. I just wasnât sure if you were ready to hear me out and I was⊠giving you space.â
âYeah well, I donât know what to do with that space without you there,â he sighs, his eyes shy and absolutely adorable.
âNeither do I,â you smile. âSo, uh. Will you invite me to your bed, maybe fill that space and more?â
âOf course,â he laughs, taking your hand and leading you there.Â
You get under the covers and once he lies next to you, you scoot closer, hugging him again until youâre laying on top of him. But he doesnât complain. He just hugs you back tightly, pulling you closer until heâs able to bask in your scent and the warm feel of you.
But despite the relief, you know you actually have to do the talking. You pull away and lay on your side. You take in his beauty and his softness and the way they make you feel like all is right again in the world. Your fingers trace his face, from his nose to his cheek to his lips, and he does the boyfriend thing of kissing your hand - including your cut finger - before wrapping it around his waist. He looks like heâs anticipating your words, too, so you try and hope theyâre enough.
âKook, Iâm so sorry,â you start. âI⊠I have no excuse. I was being selfish and cowardly because I didnât know how to tell my parents. I didnât want to deal with what theyâll say about your job, knowing how they are and what they value and I justâŠâ
âThatâs for me to deal with though,â he says. âBecause I chose this. And Iâve always known how they are but I still chose you.â
âItâs for us to deal with, and I did it so terribly,â you shake your head. âI donât want you to think that Iâm ashamed of you and what you do. That freedom, the ability to create⊠theyâre things they donât really understand. And I thought I knew how to make them. I just ended up denying us and that was so wrong. Iâm so sorry.â
âI⊠I get it,â he responds, caressing your cheek now. âThey worked so hard to give you this life and of course they want to make sure youâre taken care of. And for them, they only know of one way that could happen. Iâd be naive to think theyâll just accept that the man whoâs crazy about their daughter isnât some corporate dude with secure employment and upward mobility in his career.â
He doesnât miss your shy smile and the way you nibble your lip and that just triggers the butterflies in his belly.Â
âBut thatâs for me to show them that I can take care of you, and not because you canât do it yourself but because I want to,â he adds. âI⊠I wanna be that person who makes things better and easier for you and who makes you happy.â
And who makes you feel loved, he doesnât say. Thatâs a conversation for another day, he thinks.
âYou do,â you assure him. âAnd I feel it everyday. Youâre good at that, and I donât tell you enough.â
âI know now,â he smiles, leaning closer to kiss you softly.Â
You return it but pull away. âDo you forgive me?â
âOf course I do,â he says, falling into the kiss that he gives again.
âOkay. I donât wanna hurt you like that ever again.â
Your pouty face tugs his heart and he wants to tell you that none of that matters now because youâre back in each otherâs arms, and thatâll always be enough for him.Â
He just hums as he goes for another kiss thatâs deeper this time. And when you let him push you to lay on your back as you moan against his lips, his heart soars even more. Heâs missed you, and itâs definitely going to be a long night.
He hovers over you now, and he shivers when your fingers graze his neck and then his chest. You open your legs to meet his hips, and the feel of your clothed cunt against him has his brain short-circuiting. He gets in the rhythm of grinding against you while he kisses your lips then your jaw then your neck, his hand now sneaking under your shirt to fondle your breast.
Itâs when he sucks on that sensitive part near your ear that you yelp in pleasure, and he immediately covers your mouth with his hand while he giggles.
âGotta keep it down babe,â he whispers. âMy parents are in the other room.â
But he doesnât stop his kissing and you donât really want him to.
âItâs not like youâre making it any easier,â you moan as he pinches your pert nipple.
âIâm not and I wonât, but you gotta try,â he smirks before his lips trail downward.
Youâre unable to say anything once his tongue swirls around your buds. His hands wrap around your breasts that he praises, that he kisses and licks before slowly letting them go to hold onto your waist this time. He presses open-mouth kisses down your torso, his lips in tandem with your underwear thatâs teasingly being removed off of you.Â
You hear him let out a breathy moan as he spreads your legs wider.Â
And while you know that this tender-hearted man has a cheeky streak in him, you didnât expect for him to have his finger against his lips to shush you, knowing what heâs about to do. His smug face turns you on even more, and your breath is caught in your throat once you feel his tongue flat against your flesh, warming it up before the tip of his wet muscle swirls around your nub.
But you go along with his request, biting back your moan, even as your pussy chases his mouth for more.Â
And itâs what he gives, as he dives in and sucks and bites your clit while his two fingers explore your hole. The cold of his lip ring is a contrast to how hot you feel, and itâs a sensation you can never get enough of. You whimper in silence but you manage to look at him, his eyes closed as he buries his face in your cunt.Â
âLook at me,â you whisper and he follows, his gaze meeting yours. âFuu-uuck, Kook. You feel so good,â your voice quivers.
His mouthâs full but yours is hanging open. You cover yours with your free hand while the other pulls on his long locks. Heâs enjoying this so much, you can tell with the way he squeezes your thighs and moans against your skin. He follows a pace that has your body shaking, straining in intense pleasure until it gives in. You let out a low scream as your orgasm hits, and heâs right there, riding out your high with you.
He cleans you up with his tongue and then makes a show of licking your essence off his fingers before kissing you again.
âYou did good,â he teases, as he caresses your cheek.
Youâre about to say that so did he when bucks his hip against yours, and the feel of his hard cock against your still wet cunt ignites another fire in you. He repeats it, and itâs what has you moaning again.
âFuck baby, I told you to keep it down,â he says, continuing his movements.
You know you canât help it at this point, not when heâs back to licking your neck and kneading your breast.
âWhatever. Not like this isnât new to your parents or anything,â you say.Â
Itâs a guess but you doubt youâre wrong.
âWhat? Fucking a girl in my room?âÂ
âYeah?â
âBut youâre the first girl I ever brought in here,â he cocks an eyebrow.Â
âThatâs uh, thatâs kinda sweet,â you reply, your breath steadying now.Â
âYeah and well, who gets to say they fucked their childhod crush in their childhood bedroom?â He smirks again. âI can.â
Heâs back to kissing you and much as you enjoy this, the itch to feel him in your mouth overtakes you, and you take the chance when he trails down your neck.
âSo, can this childhood crush suck your dick?âÂ
âYes, she can,â he chuckles.
He removes himself from you and leans against his bed frame. You get on your knees and pull off his boxers, salivating at the sight before you. You get on top of him, your damp lips gliding against his hard cock and his mouth drops open, an invitation for you to do what you wish.
With your movements on his hips, you focus on his neck, licking up the smooth flesh and the protruding vein that has him biting back his moan. Then you kiss him, desperately and passionately, as you slowly remove his tank top and rest your hands on his chest.
Itâs your turn to trail kisses down his torso now and you give every inch of him ample attention. But when you make it further down, thereâs one part of him that deserves so much more. You tease him only a little, stroking his length and kitten-licking his slit, before swallowing him whole and swirling your tongue around and all over his cock. Heâs hard and thick and everything you want inside of you.
You hold back a gag while he holds back his whimpers. You stroke him relentlessly so you could watch his mouth hang open and his strained body almost folding in pleasure as his thighs tighten in your hold.Â
âYou like that, baby?â You hum.
âFuck, baby, you feel so good around me. Fuck,â he keens, his voice quivering now.Â
You let his sounds guide you on how hard and how deep to go, but heâs the one who stops you, as he leans close and captures your lips in a searing kiss. He pulls you back on top of him to slide down his cock and the stretch makes you moan in his mouth.Â
Heâs propped up on his arms for support while you move up and down, loving how he drags inside you in an angle that has your mind going hazy. You wrap your arms around his neck while he pushes upward to meet you, and somehow doing this while trying to be quiet is making the pleasure more intense.
It gets too much for Jungkook and he wants more. He wants to hit your deepest spots. He wants to be as close to you as he possibly can. He wants to swallow your moans and touch every part of your body and pleasure you in every way that heâs able.Â
So he pulls you off and lays you on your side, sliding back in from behind, with your one leg raised. The angle has you keening, even more when his one hand finds your breast and the other does its work on your clit. He pushes gently then roughly, no longer caring about the odd sounds the bed is making against his wall. He wouldnât mind making up a reason to his parents if they ask him about it. Right now, all he wants is to reach his peak with you.Â
Your body is shaking in pleasure and overstimulation but you urge him, wanting to feel his seed inside you as well.
You lick his mouth. âBaby please, I want to feel your cum inside me,â you beg. âI want you so bad, fuck fuck.â
He loves it when you plead to him like this. He loves hearing what he does to you. He revels in the way your body molds into his, the way it aches to be close and to be one with him. His movements continue, and with his unrhythmic pounding against your pussy, he comes. You come right after, caused by his intense fiddling of your clit, and you feel like floating, your body in the clouds of pure pleasure.
But like always, heâs there with you, making sure you safely fall into a bed of hugs and kisses and warmth. He stays inside you as he softens, but his arms wrap around you, his face in your neck as he mumbles words of praise.Â
âFifteen-year-old me would never believe this,â he heaves as he turns you over to face him.
You giggle in response.Â
âYouâre crazy, you know that?â
âI do. Itâs how I am with you. In the best way, of course,â he smiles his boyish smile, an interesting mix of innocent and cheeky.
âItâs the same with me,â you whisper, kissing his nose. âAnd 18-year-old me would never believe this.â
You wake up the next morning to the alarm that you set on Jungkookâs phone. Your parents are leaving early in the afternoon and they wanted to prepare breakfast for all of you, and itâs a meal with them that youâre excited and a little nervous to have.Â
You kiss the chest that your face is flushed against, and this elicits a groan from the man next to you.Â
âGood morning, babe,â you greet, shifting up to kiss his nose this time.Â
âGâmorning,â he grunts.
âSo, uh, weâre supposed to meet my parents for breakfast. And uh, Iâm going to tell them about us.â
Itâs what prompts him to finally open his eyes, and the softness in them makes your heart burst.Â
âOkay,â he smiles. âI hope it wonât ruin their trip or anything.â
âIt wonât,â you assure him. âI⊠I tried to get through to my mom yesterday. You know, just telling her the things I value and stuff.â
âHmm. Jimin did the same with your dad. I guess I wonât be such a disappointment now, huh?â
âShush, youâre not even that,â you pout. âI think theyâll understand.â
He mirrors your smile and thereâs a giddy feeling at finally - hopefully - seeing your parents be happy for you. So you get off the bed and sneak out of Jungkookâs bedroom to go to the bathroom.Â
You wash up quickly, only to make it to the hallway and find his parents standing there, wide-eyed as they look at you in surprise. You realize youâre only wearing Jungkookâs shirt that falls just above your knees and you try to cover whatever you can with your hands.
âHi, uncle. Hi, auntie,â you shyly smile. âThis, uh, this isnât how I wanted to meet you.â
âWell, we donât really mind,â Jungkookâs mother smiles. âWeâre just glad youâre here. Itâs been a while since weâve seen you.â
âI know. I, uh, I wasnât dating your son yet the last time I was here.â
âAnd that calls for a celebration, doesnât it?â She giggles. âThat boy has had a crush on you since forever. Itâs funny he never believed that we knew. He wasnât exactly subtle.â
âItâs not the first time Iâve heard that,â you laugh back.
You hear a door open and before you know it, large arms are wrapping around your waist and a mop of hair tickles your cheek. Jungkook grunts against your neck as he says that heâs finally awake, and you cringe at his parentsâ amused faces.
âKook, your parents are in front of us. This is so embarrassing.â
âNah, they donât mind. Theyâre cool,â he says.
âYeah, and my parents arenât,â you sigh.
âSo, Iâm guessing your parents donât know yet?â His father asks.
Your pout prompts him to explain. âWell, the day after you got together, our lovesick son here told our family about both of you. But he said that you haven't told your parents yet so weâve kept it from them ever since. Itâs hard since we see them all the time but we managed.â
âKook also told us about what happened,â his mother asks. âHe was grumpy all day yesterday and we got him to tell us why he was so upset.â
âIâm sorry,â you pout again. âThat wasnât my finest moment.â
You feel Jungkookâs hold on you tighten, his way of telling you itâs all okay.
âItâs alright, darling,â she smiles. âWe know how your parents are, and their reasons come from a good place. We tried to make this boy here understand them and you as well. Firstborns carry immense pressure to meet expectations; he just doesnât get it because heâs the youngest. But it seems that itâs worked out with both of you, and weâre glad it did.â
âHe couldnât resist me,â you shrug, to his parentsâ amusement.Â
âUh, youâre the one who walked through the rain to come see me,â he reminds you, his head popping out of your neck now.Â
âYou wanted me to.â
He tickles you in response and youâre all laughing in no time. Itâs a different dynamic with his parents, as Jungkook always had a very close relationship with them. You saw it as a teenager and now, you get to be part of it, too.
They finally let you go and ask you to have dinner with them tomorrow, and thatâs one meal that youâre definitely excited to have.Â
You push Jungkook towards the bathroom and then return to his room to dress up. Itâs shortly after when youâre both walking the few blocks to your house, fingers interlocked as you give each other comfort.
You make it home and once you unlock the door, you can already hear laughter and clanking pots from the kitchen. You head there, meet Jiminâs smug face, and clear your throat to announce your presence.
âOh, there you are. We were wondering where you were,â your mother says. âAnd hi, Jungkook.â
He greets your parents and from behind you, you take his hand again.Â
âI went for a walk⊠with Jungkook.â
He clears his throat and you backtrack.
âI mean, I, uh, was at his place. Thatâs where I slept.â
âOh?â Your parents say at the same time, their eyes looking at you in confusion.
âHeâs kinda my boyfriend.â
âKinda? Babe, I think Iâm more than âkindaâ your boyfriend,â he exclaims.Â
Your parents look shocked and next to them, Jimin is laughing in his seat.
âI mean, he is my legit, actual boyfriend,â you correct. âThe new thing in my life that I denied is actually him. And the person who stands by me, who makes me enjoy the moments? Thatâs him, too.â
Their faces soften, and somehow thatâs the comfort you need. Perhaps all the talking that you and your brother have done has gotten into them. You wouldnât be surprised if they talked about it, too.
âWhy didnât you tell us, then?â Your mother asks.
âBecause heâs not what you expected,â you sigh. âAnd I didnât know how youâd take it.â
âWell, he is your brotherâs best friend,â she points out.Â
âWhoâs had a crush on me since he was a teenager,â you explain.
âThatâs⊠not surprising,â your father laughs. âWe could tell.â
âOh my god, Kook. You are not subtle,â you elbow him. You turn back at them. âBut I⊠I didnât know how to tell you because you expect me to have a partner whoâs part of your world, you know? And Jungkook likes his freedom. He likes his art and⊠he really likes me. And I happen to really like him, too.â
âHe treats you well? Makes you happy? Heâs someone you can depend on when things get tough?â Your father asks.Â
He smiles tenderly at you and you feel like crying.
âYes, very much,â you nod.
âThen I think heâs everything we need him to be. A good partner, Iâd say.â
You let out a sigh of relief. This is all you needed to hear.
âWeâre sorry if you felt like you couldnât be honest with us,â your mother shakes her head. âI guess we just needed some reminding of what we want for you and your brother. And well, Jungkookâs shown us his heart all these years. Heâs always been a part of the family and heâll be even more.â
Theyâre words that Jungkook didnât expect would get him emotional, and he hugs you from behind just to steady himself. But itâs what makes your mother walk towards him for a hug, and your father surprisingly does the same.Â
âAlright, I guess itâs fitting to have this family breakfast together,â your mother says.
You all take your seats at the dining table, with yours being next to Jungkook now.
Jimin cheekily smiles. âWell, if this whole dance thing doesnât work out, I guess I can just be a counselor or family therapist or something.â
âJust donât call your clients âstupid,ââ you roll your eyes.
âI wonât. Thatâs only reserved for you.â
And just like that, everything is as it should be.
You get through breakfast with lots of laughter, as you and Jungkook tell your own versions of the story while Jimin butts in to tell his own. Itâs heartwarming to see your parents this way, especially when they tease your boyfriend about his crush on you growing up.Â
But even they admit that theyâve depended on him all these years, too, and that they donât doubt his loyalty and commitment to you.Â
You share a tense moment with him after you all drop your parents to the airport, though. Jungkook has just unloaded all their things and as they hug you goodbye, your father teases.
âJust donât welcome us home and tell us we're grandparents already.â
Jungkook dry laughs and so do you. Thatâs another topic for another day, you suppose, and while youâre still unsure of having a family, you just know itâs something youâll both talk about.
You all get home soon after to wash up. Jungkookâs excited about how youâll spend the day now that youâre both talking again, and you suggest hanging by the beach and then going out for dinner.Â
Jimin says heâll stay home to let you two make up for the past two days and so he could have that online date with Taehyung, and you agree.
You and Jungkook end up having a really good day.Â
You go to a mall and walk around. He gets you a pair of stud earrings to commemorate the day you went official to your parents and you buy him a silver chain necklace for the same silly reason, but also because he looks really good in one and you want him to have more. It pairs real nicely with the shirt and joggers casual outfit heâs been sporting these past days, and the teasing look he makes after he puts it on reminds you of that one time his necklace was dangling on your face when he was pounding into you on your couch.
You get fruit drinks and snacks at the stalls you both used to buy from as teenagers, then you head to the beach where you lounge until sunset. You wade in the water, splash each other, and then make out when thereâs no one around.Â
You feel so free and light, so young and hopeful. These are the moments you love having with him, the ones you like to enjoy and savor and have more of. And you know youâll have them for the rest of this trip and when you get back to Seoul.Â
Jimin joins you for dinner at a burger place, then you all buy cup noodles and beer and head to your favorite park. Itâs just like how most of your nights together go, just in the outdoors. You and your brother bicker and Jungkook referees; thereâs also the occasional âyouâre so cheesyâ comment from you to your boyfriend and Jiminâs gagging sound.Â
You confirm plans for the rest of the trip. Your parents will be enjoying Hawaii for close to two weeks, and you have all that time to rest and spend time with your two favorite people. Youâll be off work. Jungkook has some projects to finalize while you do your own thing, and Jimin will be watching dance shows to get him inspired.Â
But there are more beaches and parks and villages to visit. Thereâs also that two-night stay at a resort youâll be having. There are other sites and restaurants to go to, and youâll be reliving your teenage years together while making new memories.
Youâre now back at home, snug in Jungkookâs arms as he leans against the bed frame in your room, with you in between his legs.Â
âToday was a really good day,â you say, turning to him after he kisses your cheek.
âToday was amazing,â he hums.
He smiles as he replays the scenes of you shopping for each other, frolicking on the beach, and walking around your favorite spots. Theyâre all so simple and things youâve done before but today felt so much more. There was a look in your eyes that held such tenderness and care for him. You held his hand as if you didnât want to ever let go, as if you didnât want him to.
âI really like you, Kook,â you mumble, almost like a confession, as if itâs not known. âI donât know how else to say it.â
His eyes soften, as does his smile that heâs had on pretty much the whole day. But he just looks at you, and though you know he feels the same way, you want to hear him verbalize it again.
âHey, say it back,â you nudge him.Â
âI love you though,â he says after a beat of silence.
Youâre now the one who looks at him, unable to say a word.Â
âAre you that surprised?â He looks back at you nervously, nibbling his lip ring. âI mean, I think itâs quite obvious, just like everything I feel about you is.â
âKook, IâŠâ you try, but you donât exactly know how to respond.Â
You donât doubt his feelings but somehow you canât help but think that maybe right now, he loves the idea of you and not you, and thereâs a difference.
âI think I always have but I guess I didnât realize just how much until this whole thing happened,â he continues, wanting you to understand what he feels. âI asked Jimin why it was affecting me so much and he said itâs because I put you on a pedestal. You were this dream Iâve had for so long that I admired from a distance and now I get to be with you and youâre⊠human, not some flawless being who doesnât make mistakes. So when you hurt me, I faltered. Thatâs on me, too. Because I⊠I expected too much. And Iâm sorry.â
His focus is on his hands that are playing with yours before he turns to you again.
âI realized that I wanted so badly for you to want me, thatâs why it hurt. I wanted to be that person you cared for and trusted and needed because youâre all that for me. And when I saw you at my door last night, nothing else mattered but you,â he continues.Â
âWhatever misunderstanding or mistake or disagreement, I learned to accept them and I just wanted you, in my arms, so I could show you that youâre all I need. Iâve dreamt of you for so long and this version of you is more than I couldâve imagined. And I just⊠I love you, okay? It doesnât matter how you feel. I just need you to know that I do, and I donât think Iâll stop.â
Your heart is about to burst, and all you could do is cup his face in your hands and kiss him, hard and deep until you run out of air. You kiss him eagerly because youâre desperate for his touch. You kiss him passionately because there are things you feel that you canât put into words yet, and this is how you tell him.Â
Heâs quick to follow your pace, wrapping his arms around your waist as he helps you sit on his lap. Your fingers comb through his hair and grip his top and pull him closer, all while you grind against him and moan in his mouth.Â
But when he tucks a strand of hair behind your ear and caresses your cheek, you go tender.Â
âI love you so much,â he whispers against your lips, and all you feel is the warmth of his touch and how itâs all the comfort and security and stability that you need.
You slowly pull away and graze your nose against his. You donât say anything else and he doesnât expect you to. But you kiss his cheek and hug him, and you hear him sigh in relief.
He pulls away and cheekily smiles.Â
âYou know, thereâs a song for this.â
âAâwhat?â You laugh.
âA song.â
He pulls away from you then stands from the bed. âLet me get it from Jiminâs room.â
You stare at him questioningly because you really didnât think he could surprise you even more. He returns with one of his burned CDs and you ask him if he has a sex playlist or something.Â
âI used to daydream about you to this,â he says, as he puts it in the CD player that your parents got you for your 17th birthday. âI listened to it after that very kiss we had and, well, weâre back home rehashing so many memories and I kinda just want to fulfill another fantasy of mine.â
He plays the song and the first notes get you all giddy and excited and nostalgic and very much turned on.Â
âThis was my favorite song,â you say, as you signal him to come closer.
âI know. You played it all the time, I could hear it from the other room.â
You giggle, and itâs a sound he wants to listen to forever.Â
âSo, whatâs this fantasy of yours?â You ask, as you take your shirt off.
He licks his lips at the breathtaking sight of you, but he softens at the fairy tattoo on your shoulder, the one he customized and that you love showing off.
âJust⊠make love to you while this plays in the background,â he manages to say.Â
Your face softens, too, and itâs a sight he also wants to see everyday of his life.
âIâm all yours, Kook. Do whatever you please.â
Itâs a week later when you tell him.Â
Youâd just gotten back from that short trip to a resort that had you relaxed and stuffed with food. You video called with your parents during their sunset cruise and your father once again teased about not being grandparents yet and just like the first time, you brushed it off.Â
Youâre lying on Jungkookâs chest as you laugh about Jiminâs terrible bowling skills. And in the silence, he asks, âdoes it bother you that your parents expect you to have kids?â
You knew heâd picked up on it the first time, but itâs just now that heâs bringing it up.
âA little. I try not to think about it though,â you sigh. âItâs another one of those expectations, you know? But I guess itâs a harder thing to talk to them about, that I donât know if I want kids.â
He just hums and combs your hair with his fingers.
âDoes it bother you?â You ask, suddenly feeling nervous. You know enough this is a make-or-break for many people.Â
âNot really,â he says. âItâs not easy to raise a child, much less carry one, and thatâs something I canât do for you. But I guess, it doesnât matter. We can have kids. Or not. We can have a dog or a pet tortoise or a fish, really. When I think of a future, all I see is you. The rest is just a bonus.â
He speaks of your future with such certainty. Heâs always talked about enjoying the moments but the one version of a future he wants is the one where youâre with him.Â
âI just want you to know that whatever youâre worried about, share it with me. I donât want you to worry about me. We do this together. We figure it out together,â he adds.Â
And just like that, the fears and pressure you feel slowly dissipate. Heâs the only version of the future you want. Everything else is just a bonus.Â
You turn to him with a kiss on his cheek.Â
âI love you, Kook. I donât want anyone else to love me, and I donât want to love anybody else,â you whisper like a plea, just like a promise.Â
âIâm not loving anybody else,â he kisses you.Â
And itâs his own promise he makes.

The Czechs would like to have a chat
Edit: since this post blew up: This was intended as a sharing of a funny blunder I found in a book, and to prompt the sharing of the stories of other marginalized languages.
It was NOT intended as an invitation for people to a) call all English speakers stupid and imply they all think like this and b) trashtalk the authors, who, apart from this singular paragraph, wrote an immensely valuable resource for anyone interested in the history of English and arguably have achieved more within the linguistic community than any of us will.

Hi! I'm Natalie. YOU. You are correct about Cloud Strife. Everything you say about him is CORRECT
Hi I'm going to use your ask as an opportunity to go on an unhinged tangent about him below the cut.
I believe that EVERYTHING about Cloud Strife as a character makes total sense once you realize: it's autism.
Here's a character whose entire arc revolves around the erosion of his identity and his desperate attempts to adhere to an ideal image, at the expense of his own wellbeing; and how self acceptance is the thing that brings him back from the edge of despair.
Youtube theorycrafters waste hours of their lives trying to piece together Cloud's psyche, when the answer is just... autism. It really is that simple. I will die on this goddamn hill.
In Trace of Two Pasts, we learn that even as a toddler, Cloud really was just... like that. Unemotive and awkward. And the entire lifestream sequence in the OG shows us a young Cloud who behaves in baffling ways. Tifa and her friends invited Cloud into their group, but he rejected their friendship while simultaneously harboring a seething jealousy. How the heck does that work, huh?
Viewing this through the Autism Lensâąïž, his approach make way more sense. Fearing his own inability to read and reciprocate their intentions, he pushes them away, and the resulting loneliness crushes him. He mistakes that loneliness for anger. He turns that anger outwards and gets into fights. Because the other kids don't understand him, Cloud sees them as stupid and immature. It's the perfect recipe for disastrous distrust. The tragic result is that, when Tifa gets into her accident, Cloud is immediately blamed by kids AND adults. He's seen as inherently dangerous and unpredictable, even though he did nothing wrong. It's like they were already looking for the perfect excuse to hate him.
The worst part is, because he struggles to articulate his own thoughts and feelings, he starts to just... accept what other people say about him. He's a pain in the ass. He's a selfish brat. He could try being a bit nicer. Any attempt that he makes to argue, backfires and proves their points even more. He's being childish. He needs to get his shit together. Nothing's ever good enough for him. He stops fighting it and lets people drag him around and violate his boundaries, because no matter how loud he yells or how intelligently he argues, nothing he says ever reaches their ears. He trims away more and more of himself to try and appease others and nurse the constant emotional pain. (And that's not even addressing the entire traumatic *waves hands* everything that he's gone through by the time he reaches Midgar! That would have to be its own tangent lol.)
It's hard to watch as a player; the secondhand embarrassment of Cloud's social blunders is immense. Some people don't like Cloud as a video game protagonist, which is perfectly valid. But a lot of times, they justify their opinion by perpetuating the same damaging language. He's an asshole, he's a weirdo, he hates people. The irony would be hilarious if it wasn't so frustrating. I know Cloud is just a fictional character, he doesn't need to be defended from harsh criticisms. But I can't help but wonder what these players think about the "weird people-hating assholes" that they meet in real life.
It also makes me wonder if they were even paying attention. I think the games make it pretty damn obvious what's going on. He's an asshole because other characters treat him like one before they even get to know him. He hates people because he doesn't understand them, and they don't even try to understand him. He's a weirdo because he has a strange way of showing how deeply he loves and cares, and he's afraid that his love will be misinterpreted like every other emotion he's ever dared to show.
The autism is everywhere. It permeates his entire being. It's in his silly responses when he takes things too literally. It's in his painfully practical way with words. It's in the stiff expressionless look and the flat tone of voice. It's in him constantly adjusting his gloves, shifting his weight, looking down at his feet. It's in his questionable idea of what you're supposed to do with your body at a yoga session. It's in the half a dozen flustered high fives, it's in the motion sickness. It's in the contagious eagerness with his special interests in SOLDIER and materia and chocobos.
It's in the moments where the facade crumbles and we get to see the real Cloud, the one that Aerith knew was in thereâ the one that Tifa finds in the lifestreamâ the one that Zack gave his life forâ the Cloud that cherishes the whole world. He's got so much of everything inside of his heart, and he doesn't know how to get it out. You'd be a weird asshole about it, too.
#ok it's mostly coherent. good enough#good morning. lol#cloud 'you owe me a pizza' strife#cloud 'doesn't go into the twenties' strife#cloud 'i prefer funtion over form' strife#this is definitely a character analysis and NOT a self introspection session. do not peel back the layers. nothing to see here folks#ffvii#cloud strife#asks

The Bear (Anders Lassen x F! Reader)
Request from @wunder-blunder: I'm (VERY) interested in Anders Lassen (The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare) x female reader, I really enjoyed your fic Living for Later (a part 2 for that would be awesome)! So, if you're still interested/reading, my idea is that the group (Anders, Gus, etc.) go to a bar after they get out of confinement at the end of the movie, and that's where Anders and the female reader meet. The female reader (very understandably) can't stop staring at Anders so he walks over to ask why she's staring. The female reader will say how she's just shocked that anyone would let a bear into a bar (Anders is the bear), flirty banter happens and eventually leads to much more explicit things.
Pairing: Anders Lassen x Female Reader
Warnings: Explicit sexual content, minors do not interact. 18 + ONLY. Oral M & F receiving, language, thigh riding, p in v, happy ending.
Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare Masterlist
"Taste that, Gentlemen," Gus holds up his pint, "the taste of freedom." They click their glasses together, beer sloshing over the side and landing on the bar top before they tip back the pints.
"Damn, I don't think anything could taste better," Freddy sighs, looking at his glass like a lover.
Anders smiles to himself, "I can think of something." His eyes scan across the room, his back casually leaning against the bar.
"Naughty boy, Lassen," Apple laughs, taking another sip and glancing around at the lack of women in the pub. "But it doesn't look like you're going to have much luck around here."
"Would you like another?" Anders turns slowly, his heartbeat quickening when he sees you there behind the bar, the other bartender giving you a smile and a pat on the back as he heads out. "Jesus," you whistle, "I didn't know we let bears in here."
"What?" Anders sits straighter looking around for the threat.
You giggle, "I meant you," you point at him, "you look like a fuckin' bear. What did you do to get a body like that? Bench press cars?"
His cheeks turn pink and he coughs, adjusting his glasses, "I-well I."
"Steamin' Jesus," Apple chuckles, "she's got you tongue-tied Lassen!"
You give the one called Lassen a playful wink before pouring him another pint and placing it before him. "This one's on the house, didn't mean to embarrass ya in front of your friends."
"It's no trouble," he turns and speaks at his friends between clenched teeth, "they seem to have lost their manners in prison."
"Prison?" you stand straighter looking between the patrons, "you lot just got out of prison?" They nod sheepishly, "what the hell for?"
"That's classified," the one with the dark black facial hair and curls speaks up. "But we were found innocent and released today."
"So you're not raging murderous psychopaths?" you ask, refilling their glasses and wiping down the bar from the previous spill.
"Only when it comes to Nazis," you look at the Bear and feel a smile pull at your lips.
"Well, that's just fine then."
The rest of the night passes quickly, you make conversation with the other patrons, fix drinks, and try not the spend the entire time drooling over the beast of a man seated at your ber. While all of those things go well, the latter is hard to accomplish. It probably isn't helpful that you can feel his eyes follow you around the room.
And when your eyes meet, it's fucking electric. He's so big, he barely fits on the chair, his shirt sleeves rolled up leave little to the imagination and it makes your seriously want to know if he's that big, everywhere.
"Last call, gents," you ring the bell, seeing a handful of regulars come up for a final pint or to settle their bill.
You move about the room, starting the closing tasks for the evening, tossing goodbyes over your shoulder until the chime of the door is silenced. But when you look up your breath catches at seeing one lone patron remaining.
"We're closed," your voice comes out breathy, and you clear your throat. He's silent, watching you like he has all night, and you feel your assessment of him as a bear was accurate. He's an animal alright, and he's hungry.
"Do you want me to leave?" he asks, crossing his arms across him onto the bar top, and resting his chin on his hands. "Say the word, and I will go."
The words slip out before you can process, "No," he smiles, "I don't want you to leave."
He nods, before straightening, "what do we need to do to go?"
"Oh," you quickly lift your hands, shaking your head, "no, you just sit there, I can finish by myself."
He stands and your eyes widen to the size of dinner plates. Fuck, he is a giant, towering over you. You didn't get to grasp how tall he was when he sat at the bar all evening and your panties drench just thinking of how big he is. The thought from earlier comes back with a vengeance and you gulp, your eyes traveling down his body.
"See something you like?" He holds out his arms and turns for you, smirking when he catches your eyes, "are you just going to look, darling?"
"No," you swallow, shaking your head, and moving to stand before him. Tentatively you reach a hand out towards his chest, gasping when he grabs your wrist and pulls you into his orbit. His chest is solid muscle beneath your palm, and you move across his chest towards his arm, tongue coming out to lick your lips.
He groans, and your eyes snap to his, but his arm on your lips, "can I kiss you?" he asks, his hand coming to rest on your chin, his thumb pulling down your bottom lip before you bend your head and take it into your mouth. Tongue swirling around his digit, sucking it between your lips before letting go with a pop.
"Knulla," he mumbles under his breath.
"Kiss me Bear," you command and he wastes not a moment. His arms wrapping around your waist and hoisting you into his arms before your ass lands on the bar top. He nestles his body between your thighs, spreading them far to make room for his large form.
"Tell me you want this," he's so close, and you feel a little drunk having him so close. "Tell me," you pulls you towards the edge of the counter, your soaking through your panties, skirt bunched around him, "that you want me to fuck you. That you'll let me take you home and do everything I've been dreaming to do to you all night."
The sound of your heart beating is so deafening you can guarantee he can hear it. "Yes," you whimper, begging him with your body to put you out of your misery and kiss you.
"Then," he takes a step back, lowering your skirts, "what do we need to do to leave?"
You huff, crossing your arms and withering on the bar top, desperate for any kind of friction. The Bear misses nothing though and quickly steps forward, pulling you off the counter and to your feet. "None of that," he chastises playfully, "the only thing getting you off tonight will be me."
"Hmph," you step out of his arms, crossing your own across your chest. "You won't even kiss me, how do I know it's even worth letting you take me home?"
"I see," he nods, "the little barn needs a taste."
You don't get a chance to ask about the meaning of the word before he has you pinned to the wall, his knee slotted between your skirts and his mouth hot on your own. It's like an inferno, his mouth moving with your own in a complicated waltz only you two knowing the steps. When he lifts his knee, and presses it to your cunt, you gasp, his tongue sliding into your mouth and tangling with your own.
You are lost to everything but him, and when he raises his boot to his toes and rolls his leg up and down you quickly grasp onto his shoulders, his forehead pressed to your own. You close your eyes and rock your hips, being held completely off the ground by his tree trunk of a thigh.
"That's it," he praises, holding onto your hips and helping you move back and forth on his thigh. "Your bear is hungry," he latches his lips onto your neck when your head drops back against the wall. "Hmm," he groans, sucking and leaving bites along your neck, "I want you to cum," he whispers in your ear, sucking your earlobe between his lips. "Then I'm gonna take you home and lick that pretty pussy clean until you make a mess all over my face, again."
The combination of the filth rolling off his tongue and the strong thigh beneath you, working together with his hands on your waist is all too much. You grab him around the neck with one arm and the other hand is on his arm and you pull yourself up and down with a small cry and a whimper of his name as you fall apart beneath his skilled fingers.
Your breath is loud in the silence of the pub and you both still as he slowly lowers you to the ground. The legs you stand on are wobbly and he quickly reaches out an arm to steady you. "Are you alright, my darling?" he asks softly, running a hand over your face, and smiling when you nod. "You were so beautiful," he marvels, "if that's how gorgeous you look cumming on my thigh. You will rival the gods when you cum on my cock."
"Lassen," you whimper his name and he closes his eyes and controls his breathing.
"Please, call me Anders," he begs, slowly opening his eyes and taking a step back, "what do we need to do to finish?"
"Nothing," you shake your head, turning to reach over the bar for your purse, "I'm opening the bar tomorrow at 11, I'll come in early and finish it."
"We should finish it now," he argues gently, holding up a hand to interrupt you, "trust me."
"Why?"
"Because I don't think you're going to make it in tomorrow." You eyes widen and you go to ask the question when he offers the answer, "you'll be lucky to walk tomorrow when I'm through with you."
The two of you make quick work of the closing tasks and after making a quick call to your boss about covering for the next day you both finally leave the pub. The London air is chilly and you pull your threadbare coat tighter around your body, locking the door behind you. A couple passes when you turn and you sigh looking at the womans fine coat and gloves, a girl could dream.
A heavy weight drops across your shoulders, the scent of tobacco and leather heady as you snuggle into the warmth. "Let's get you home," Anders, reaches an arm around you and you turn towards home. If it wasn't for the spend dripping down your thighs, you'd think it was just an evening stroll between a couple. You'd always wish you had a man to meet you after work and walk you home. Someone to make sure you made it home safe.
With Anders arms around you, you could almost pretend. You walked in comfortable silence, the tension from earlier simmering as your pace quickened when your apartment came into view. You took the steps two at a time, and before long you stood before the door.
You shrug off his coat and hand it to him before reaching into your purse for your keys. The room is dark and you move around the room, turning on lamps and hanging up your coat. The deadbolt is deafening and when you turn to look towards the door, your jaw drops.
The whole thing happens in slow motion, his eyes on you the whole time. Heâs wearing suspenders and he lowers each side till their hanging at his waist. His hands are slow, methodical, as he unbuttons each button of his shirt. Your own hands mirroring his actions as you slip the buttons of your shirt in time with each of his. He tugs the shirt off and your mouth waters. His chest is a canvas of scars, and for a second he looks unsure as you step forward, hand reaching out to trace the long one across his abdomen.Â
âHow did that happen?â you ask, whispering. He tells you everything, your hand tracing each and every scar before going over them with your lips.Â
When youâve finished tracing your tongue across the last scar, a bullet he received two years ago protecting a child does he find his voice. âYouâre not disgusted?âÂ
âMy handsome Bear,â you cradle his face, âthese scars are the canvas of your life. The life youâve fought so hard to live. I could never be disgusted.âÂ
He lets out a shallow breath before nodding, âThank you.âÂ
âNo,â you hold a finger to his lips, âno thank you are necessary. It is I who should be thanking you.â You trace your hand down his abdomen and reach for his belt, holding his gaze when you begin to open his pants and lower the zipper, dropping to your knees and licking your lips as you work the pants down his legs.Â
His cock is magnificent, and you are pleased to know he really is that large, everywhere. âFuck,â you mumble, wondering for a moment how youâll even manage to get him in your mouth let alone your pussy. Heâs silent, watching you and he steps out of his pants, tossing them and his shoes into the corner and standing before you completely naked.Â
You reach for his cock and give it a tentative stroke, your hand not even encompassing half his size, mouth salivating at the dribble of pre-cum pooling at the end. You stick out your tongue and lick the end of his cock, moaning softly at the salty taste. âFan, gör det igen Ă€lskling,â he moans head dropping back and you feel encouraged by the broken way he just sounded.
Your jaw strains from the stretch but you manage to slide about half of him down your throat before you hit the back. Your panties drip onto the floor, when you pull him back out and in, lubricating the rest so your hands can slide in time with your mouth. You want to touch your pussy so bad, itâs throbbing but his moans of pleasure are enough to get you off. He leans down, putting one of his hands on your head and guiding you deeper, gagging on his cock.Â
Anders looks down, his mouth dropped open on a moan, watching the saliva drip down your chin and splash like raindrops on your exposed breasts. He wants to lick them, open his mouth wide and suck each gorgeous globe between his lips, teasing your nipple with his tongue. But right now heâs lost to the way you look at him. Tears streaming down your chin as you attempt to take him deeper and deeper with each thrust of his hips, heâs so fucking close and he wants to cum inside your mouth, watch your mouth fill with the white creamy cum and see your throat bob as your swallow down his load.Â
âIâm gonna cum,â he warns, holding your head still and listening to your gag as he cums down your throat with a loud groan of your name. Itâs as beautiful as he thought when he pulls out and watches you gasp, hands on his thighs as you try to catch your breath, his cum all over your lips until you lick them clean with a grin.Â
Anders reaches a hand out, pulling you up and quickly disposing of the rest of your clothes. He doesnât bother with your bra straps, the fabric ripping and tossed in the corner before heâs tossing you over his shoulder and heading for the bedroom. You let out a loud squeal but he silences you when he fondles your ass, giving it a sharp slap.Â
He tries three doors before he finds the bedroom, and tosses you onto the bed - tits bouncing with the force. âSpread your legs for me, darling,â he drops to his knees and crawls up the bed, nestling himself between your thighs. âLet me see that messy cunt.â He lifts one of your legs and rests it on his shoulder, spreading you wide, and running a thick finger between your folds. âHmm,â he hums happily, spreading your wetness all over your folds.Â
Anders leans forward and you reach down, grabbing his hair with one hand, the other quickly reaching behind you for the pillow when he licks at your clit. Almost like a kitten licking a bowl of milk, he hums, the vibrations traveling up your body and you wither, groaning when he lifts his other arm and rests it across your stomach keeping you still.Â
Thatâs when everything changes. Gone is the kitten and the bear comes out to play. He devours you, his nose dragging through your slit and he tongue following, playing with your clit like the expert marksman you assume he is.Â
âAnders,â you try to rock your hips and he lets up with his grip, letting you ride his face.Â
He pulls up for air, watching mesmerized as your hips lift trying to follow his mouth. You halt when he spits on your pussy, the sound lewd and loud your leg rising as he lifts one of his arms and puts it between you. You arch off the bed on a gasp when he slides two of his thick fingers inside you.Â
You grasp the arm at your waist in an iron grip, moving your hips up and down. He curls his fingers and you see stars. âFuck!â He leans down, sucking your clit back into his mouth and moving his tongue back and forth. The slight stubble leaves a delicious burn that aches. âIâm gonna-â you pant, struggling to get the words out before you feel the pressure build and explode soaking his fingers. He doesnât lose momentum, riding your high out until youâre pushing his face away.Â
He crawls up your body and rests his body gently on your own. He rests his head on your chest, like he did on his arms back at the bar, grinning.Â
âYou look quite pleased with yourself,â you run your fingers through his hair, his head tilting to rest more into your hand.Â
âI am,â he smiles, âto have a beautiful woman fall apart on my tongue is a blissful thing.âÂ
âYou must have had many women to have such skill.â The idea leaves a sour feeling in your stomach and your hand falls back to your chest but he quickly moves his head beneath your hand to encourage your touch.Â
âI havenât,â his words surprise you and you meet his eyes to see them already upon you. âBeen with many women that is. Just two.â Youâre unsure if you believe him, but he places a kiss between your breasts and moves up your body to gently kiss your lips. His cock grows hard against your belly with each swipe of his tongue against your own. âI want to see you cum again,â he whispers against your lips.Â
âThen fuck me-â the words die on your tongue when he lifts your legs and presses them into your stomach, his cock brushing through your folds.Â
âAs you wish,â he grins, pressing just the head inside you. You gasp, tossing your head back as he works himself deeper and deeper inside you with each thrust of his hips.Â
âOh god,â you moan, his thumb working your clit as he finally fits himself all the way inside you.Â
His chuckle has your eyes snapping open to look at him with a tilt of your head and he gives you a wink, âNot god, darling, just me.âÂ
âYou assho-â he rocks his hips, pulling back all the way before slamming back in again. You canât breathe, each stroke of his enormous cock punching the oxygen from your lungs.Â
You close your eyes, lost in the sensations he brings out, each snap of his hips fills you deeper and deeper, and youâre sure you can feel him poking out of your stomach. The room is otherwise silent besides your panting breath, incoherent mumblings of his name, and the lewd sounds of his cock pumping into your soaked pussy.Â
âLook at me,â Anders, nudges his head against your own and you slowly open your eyes. âThere you are,â he praises, kissing you deeply, âkeep your eyes on me, I want to see you cum.âÂ
âAn-Anders,â you hold onto both his arms and look between you, seeing him disappear inside you with each movement of his massive body. The pressure in your belly builds like a volcano bound to explode and he sees it, moving his hips quicker and chasing your release with his own.Â
âCum for me, darling,â he commands, his accent strong, âcum now.â You obey, arching your chest up into him and letting out a loud moan, squeezing around his cock so tight. âShit,â he groans, flooding you with his release. Itâs hot and thick and you can feel it drip down your thighs, leaving them sticky.Â
He stays buried deep inside you, his massive arms on either side of your head keeping himself upright so he does not crush you. You want to feel his weight on you, feel him keep you there with his body, never let you go. But eventually, he does, but not before kisses are pressed over every inch of your face. He may be a bear in appearance; a fierce fighter that could tear your limb from limb with little thought. But inside hes nothing but a teddy bear, a lover, someone you could easily get attached too.Â
âWheres the bathroom?â he asks, sitting up, his eyes fixed on where heâs left a mess licking his lips. You point to the door in the corner and he reluctantly rises. God, heâs a fucking sight, all hard lines and muscles, and with each step away you want to shout for him to return.Â
He returns quickly with a clothe, wiping you clean and collapsing back into bed. Tugging you into his arms, sleep quickly finds you, his arm rubbing up and down your back and humming a soft swedish lullaby.Â
By the time you awaken the clock reads 1 pm and the bed is long cold. No note, no sign he was even there besides the two wet towels hanging in the bathroom. You hate how dissapointed you feel at his absence but the ache between your legs from the six additional orgasms since the night before remind you that even if you wished too you couldnât have gone again. He had to leave eventually.Â
The shower works out some of the kinks in your muscles but you still move slowly throughout the flat, trying to muster the strength to go into work that evening. While your boss had been accepting of missing the opening shift at the pub you couldnât get out of closing tonight.Â
The pub is loud when you arrive and you smile at the other bartender before jumping into the fray and starting to take orders. The night moves quickly luckily despite your melancholy mood, several of the regulars pick up on it; cracking jokes in the hopes of alleviating some of the sadness.Â
From behind you notice another seat fill at the bar and go to turn, âWhat can I get-â the words evaporate on your tongueâa great bear of a man filling the bar stool before you. You look at one another, the pub continuing around you like it didnât know your world was slowly tilting on its axis.Â
âYou,â he puts his arms on the bar top and smiles at you, âI would like to have you.âÂ
âYou did,â you cross your arms over your chest, âyou left without a word.âÂ
He lifts a bag from the floor and puts it on top of the counter, âI needed to go grab this.âÂ
Heâs piqued your curiosity and knows it, grinning like a schoolboy as you uncross your arms and move closer, to pull the bag down and look inside. The contents are ordinary, clothes and an extra pair of shoes, a shaving kit, several knives, and guns. âI donât understand,â you glance up at him and catch the quick hint of vulnerability.Â
He clears his throat, âI went to grab my things. So I could come back home.âÂ
âHome?â you feel a tightness in your throat, âand where might that be?âÂ
âI already told you, darling. You. You, are my home.âÂ
âWe hardly know one another,â the first tear slips down your cheek and he stands leaning over the bar to brush it away. âYou could be a madman for all I know, a brute, a beast.âÂ
He holds a hand to his chest, mock offense clear on his face, âI am no such thing. I am a lover, not a fighter. You raise a brow at him, pulling out the large hunting knife from his bag and he grins sheepishly, âOkay, I am a bit of a fighter.âÂ
You stare at him, him watching with bated breath for you to decide if heâs worth this effort. But you know you already decided when you turned around and saw him there. âYouâre paying half the rent,â he beams, nodding happily, âand doing the washing and dishes. I wonât be a little housewife doing all the work while you sit around and drink.âÂ
âI can cook,â he stands, coming around the bar, the other patrons watching him curiously, looking between the two of you. âIâm very handy around the house,â he wraps his arms around your waist, your hands falling naturally to his chest. âI make the bed, clean up after myself, and will be your own personal guard dog, darling, no one will ever hurt you. I promise.âÂ
He leans down to kiss you but you pull back, watching the little crease between his brows deepen in confusion. âI donât want a guard dog,â you whisper to his conspiritorily, âI want a bear.âÂ
His laugh is loud and booming before he nods, âyes, my love, Iâll be your bear.â When he finally presses his lips to yours, the bar erupts in cheers, and for the first time in the long time, youâre exactly where you want to be.

"What you think, Rushman?"
"Ask about the arms deal happening at the end of the week."
Natasha listened quietly to the instructions being relayed to her via her earpiece, her face a stoic mask. She evaluated the situation, her sharp mind calculating the security measures in place.
"Not a bad place," she remarked, her tone low and detached. "But do you guys really have the stuff necessary to secure all this square footage?"
She got a couple of looks and tried to remain calm; using 'secure' like that would definitely get her suspected of being an undercover Agent.
Realizing the slip-up in her choice of words, Natasha quickly adapted her demeanor, keeping her arms folded and tight to her sides, the picture of nonchalance. Despite her slight blunder, she maintained her composure, "I know a guy with both hands under the table," she kept her arms folded and tight to her sides. She didn't manage to sneak anything in with her weapons wise. Her fists were enough to hold their own in a battle.
One of the guides brushed off her question, stating, "Don't worry about it." He reassured her, mentioning that more support was on its way.
As they arrived in the basement control room, Natasha observed the smashed window with a furrowed brow. Her instincts kicked in, and she honed in on the details of the scene, taking note of it.
"Did we catch something?"
"You could say that." His grin gave Natasha a bad feeling.
They turned on the singular light bulb that lit the decrepit little space a small figure tied to the chair, dread welled up in Natasha. The figure tried to remain still in the chair, but the blood trickling from their limbs betrayed the restraints' unforgiving tightness.
As Natasha tried to maintain her composure, the sight of the restrained figure hit her like a wave of dread. Despite her best efforts, she couldn't ignore the familiar detailsâthe slender frame, the slope of the shoulders, even the glimpse of the sharp collar bone protruding from the button-up shirt. The stockings were torn, probably from getting dragged to and fro. Shoes were probably the first thing taken from them.
A woman beside the restrained body was wearing her jacket, the same jacket she gave you last night.
Natasha's heart stopped.
She knew it was you before they pulled the burlap off your head.
As they pulled the burlap sack off your head, Natasha's heart sunk deeper, the sight confirming her fears. Before she could even fully register what was happening, a ruthless blow landed across your face, forcefully snapping your head to one side with a sickening crunch. The chair screeched against the concrete surface beneath as it shifted from the force of the punch.
The girl that was standing beside you came up to Natasha and touched her biceps as she circled her.
Natasha steeled her expression, knowing that she couldn't afford any display of emotion. She felt their eyes on her, watching for any crack they could exploit, checking to see if they had found the weakness they thought. If they had found their mole.
"Where'd you find her?"
"Wouldn't you like to know," the worker bees around her snickered as they watched the show. She ran her hands over Natasha's muscled arms, circled her like a predator, a smug smile playing on her lips.
Natasha clenched her fists tightly under her armpits, her nails digging into her skin with increasing pressure, leaving behind angry crescent indents. The intensity of her grip grew, mirroring the effort she exerted to maintain her composure, even as her jaw worked in a white-knuckled attempt to keep her teeth from clenching too obviously. She forced herself to remain still, the muscles in her neck straining with the effort, despite the overwhelming fear and rage that was making her vision blur.
You didn't utter a word as they laid into you, taking every slap and punch with little more than a grunt or a burst of air. You kept your eyes shut as they hauled your head up by your hair, still pulled back into a ponytail.
The realization hit Natasha that you hadn't been taken from the safety of your home. You were still dressed in the clothes from the party last night, leaving her feeling a wave of nausea as she wondered how long you had been imprisoned in this cold, dimly lit room.
Guilt gnawed at her, regret filling her like a lead weight in her chest. She should've walked you back to the party, or booked you a cab, even if you had protested, insisted that you could manage on your own.
The man gloating about finding you tightened his grip on your hair, forcefully turning your face towards him and inhaling against your cheek. His words rang in Natasha's ears, a reminder of your vulnerability. "We got a tip that there was a real pretty little thing hanging around," he said, a twisted sadistic pleasure in his tone that made Natasha's skin crawl.
"Don't move a muscle, Agent. Stay on target," the warning echoed in her earpiece, and her blood ran cold as she heard the commanding order to remain still.
Fury assigned Natasha to Coulson's division for a while after her mission on Stark. How far were they planning on letting this go? How long had they been listening to you get hurt? Do they even know that the daughter of the director is getting hurt?
The eyes in the room were still fixed on Natasha, testing her limits, pushing her for a crack in her facade. She felt the weight of their gaze. "Y'know, someone let us know that she was with SHIELD." It was clear that they were trying to push her, to see if they could expose her.
Of course someone had tipped them off. How else would they have been able to get the drop on the Furious daughter?
"Y'know what they say," another one slapped her on the shoulder before strolling into the semi-connected interrogation room. "Keep your friends close and your enemies closer?"
Natasha wiggled her fingers against her palm, feeling the blood he'd drawn. She felt herself reaching her breaking point, your subtle movement caught her eye, and she glanced in your direction. You pried your least swollen eye open and looked at her, managing just a little twitch of your lips. No one else would be able to recognise it as a smileâthey'd sooner assume it was a flinch.
But Natasha could always tell.
You shut your eyes again as one of the men grabbed your neck, forcing you to expose the length of it, their touch sending chills down your spine. "She is a pretty thing, huh?" the man remarked, turning back to Natasha, his finger trailing along the exposed skin.
"Agent, do not move. I repeat: stand down."
Natasha watched the hand trail down your neck to your collarbone, just barely peeking out from your tight black dress. He pulled out a knife, cutting off one the red dress.
The two in the room grinned at each other as the knife trailed exposing just the hint of a white bra with floral lace. "Should we see how pretty?"
The man's eyes glinted with malicious intent as he offered Natasha the knife, a cruel smile playing at his lips. "Rushman? Would you like to do...the honors?"
Natasha hesitated, but she knew what the risks were. So after contemplating, she took the knife handle. She slowly walked towards you, her eyes flickered over your battered face, taking in the bruises, the split lip, the swollen eyes.
The impatient shouts from behind her only fueled her frustration and anger.
"Fuck her already!"
You could see the struggle in her eyes, the internal battle she was fighting. You wanted to reassure her, to let her know it is okay, but your voice was hoarse from the abuse you'd enduredâand besides it would blow up her cover.
She caressed your cheek and you leaned on her touch, a tear fell down slightly nodding at herâsilently telling her that it's going to be okay.
"Do it Rushman!"
"Fuck her! Like this!" A man shouted, mimicking aggressive gestures with his ring and middle finger. "Give us a fucking show!"
"I know how to give a good fuck, don't tell me how to fuck her." Natasha bit out. She knows she's damned after what she just said besides Coulson's team hearing her words.
Hearing her say that she would give the daughter of the director a good fuck.
You, her boss, hearing her say that she would fuck you.
Natasha knelt in front of you, and mouthed I'm sorry, she caressed your face one last time. "Can you close your eyes for me?" she whispered, "Please, detka."
"Don't open them unless I told you to."
Because she never wanted you to see that side she's about to unleash. It is a version of her that she had buried in the past after she was given a new life, a new chanceâa fresh start. The side of her that you are very aware of because it was the side of her that you studied half of your life. The side of her that you hated.
Your mission.
She doesn't want you to see it, especially not now that she is falling in love with you.
But your life is at risk and so is the beast within her.
As soon as you shut your eyes, she turned and grabbed the first man by his head and, with a single, powerful motion, slammed his face down onto the wooden table. The force of the impact shattered the table's surface, sending splinters flying.
The girl reached into the back of her jeans, "Fuckin' moleâ!"
Natasha spun on her heel, her shoulder driving into her like a human battering ram and before she could hit the ground, Natasha grabbed a handful of her greasy hair and yanked her head down, ramming her knee into her face with bone-shattering force. The sound of crunching teeth filled the room as she slumped unconscious to the floor, blood pouring from her ruined mouth.
"That is my fucking jacket." She spat out as she aggressively removed the jacket from the girl.
No one can deny that Natasha is by far the strongest on SHIELDâprobably one of the strongest agents in the field, if not the strongest.
She grabbed the creepy one by the hand, "This is how you fuck," she gritted before twisting it all the way around to pop it off the wrist. The creep screamed and howled in pain.
The sudden violence in the room had you flinching with each loud impact, your heart racing. Every crack of bone, every thud of a body hitting the ground, made you jump and tremble with fear. Wishing that it's not Natasha.
Only if you know that it was Natasha who was causing those sounds.
The one who had been doing the beating on you held up his hands, backing away from you on the chair, who was still eyes closed and was close to passing out.
"Agent! Stand down, this is a direct order!"
Natasha tore the earpiece and its connected mic out of her ear and let it fall to the ground before crushing it under her foot. She kept her eyes on the man with your blood on his knuckles.
"H-Hey, Rushman," the idiot was at least smart enough to try and barter his way to safety. "Look, we both know you're not gonna kill meâ"
"Says who?"
The smaller of the two men shrank a little. Maybe his life wasn't as insured as he thought it was. "O-Okay!âokay, look, I'm sorry! I-I'm sorry. You want info?! I'll tell youâI'll tell you everything! Who tipped us off, e-everything!"
Natasha grasped the bastard by his shirt, slamming him up against the wall, black in the eyes. "You've got a lot of nerve bartering with me after what you did to herâ"
"Nat."
The beater hit the floor like a sack of bricks.
Your eyes were still closed but you shook your head side to side. Now you're sure Natasha is safe, and is probably the one causing these idiots to cry since you heard her voice.
"DetkaâŠ" Natasha moved in front of you, lifting your chin as gently as she could. You'd have one hell of a black eye, and your naturally sharp cheekbones were split and swollen. "You can open your eyes now."
And you did.
"Backup better be on the fucking way," Natasha growled as she get you freed. Your body naturally folded in on itself in its injured and vulnerable state. Natasha hesitated as she pulled the jacket that the girl stole from you, she doesn't want you to wear that anymore so she shirked off her leather jacket, pulling it around you and zipper it up over your exposed chest. "Or those old fucks are next."
The beater was trying to crawl to safety and Natasha slammed her heel down on his back.
The beater threw up anything that was in his stomach. Natasha leaned down, yanking his head up by the hair, as he had done with you minutes ago. "You're gonna tell us everything."
He nodded.
"You are going to cooperate with every agent you see."
He nodded again, more vigorously.
Natasha dropped the man like a ragdoll, his body hitting the floor with a dull thud. She turned her attention to the other, who was struggling to his feet, his face pale and sweaty. "And you," she said coldly, stepping closer to him.
You didn't even blink as Natasha grabbed his shoulder, then his jaw, and twisted. You watched as the man's lifeless body fell to the ground. You looked up at Natasha, "I'm going to pretend I didn't see that."
Natasha said nothing. Now you had seen that side of her. This is the Black Widow you have been craving to catch, your mission, your past mission.
Natasha nudged the man's corpse out of the way with her foot, his body falling onto its side, picking you up and sitting down in the chair for herself with you in her arms.
The sounds of your fellow agents storming the building started at the top of the building and traveled through its open, gutted remains. They would be with them soon enough.
Natasha sat and waited. Her mind raced, considering the potential consequences of her disobedience, she would be lucky to be suspended and on probation. Much more likely, they would have internal affairs investigate her for her disobedience and fire her.
But with your safety on the line, you in her arms right nowâshe'd face them all willingly.
She would accept any punishment they gave herâgladly. She turned her head, pressing her lips to your temple in the slim window of being alone with you.
â§
"Easy, widow," Yelena held up her hands and took a few steps closer, walking towards your bed and to the chair of your guard dog. "Just checking if you need anything."
"I'm fine."
"Come on, Nat." Yelena pleaded, she knew that Natasha would be grappling with the tragedy, and she had heard that no one could get near you with Natasha by your side. "She's okay, right?"
"She better be," she finally let out a sigh, uncrossing her arms and turning her head halfway away from you and towards Yelena. "It's the only reason I'm here and not hunting down those bastards."
"Natasha, they're being handled by SHIELD." Yelena reassured, calming her Natasha down.
"I am not pertaining about them." Natasha murmured but the blonde was quick to pick up the pieces.
"You know, if anyone were to hear you threaten Coulson's division like that it'd be your position," Yelena warned, to which Natasha didn't even offer a shrug of acknowledgement. Yelena looked at her determined unwillingness to rest if it left you unprotected. "Okay, just...yell if you need me, okay?âeither of you?"
Natasha let out another heavy sigh, "thanks, Lena."
The door closed gently as Yelena left, leaving you sleeping peacefully with your guard dog.
Natasha sat by your side, her eyes never leaving you as she contemplated what just happened. You looked so peaceful, as if you two hadn't been together the night after you were kidnapped and brutalized.
She still feels guilty.
It was true; no one had managed to come near you. Natasha had been told that Maria will be handling her questioning, even though she saved you, the daughter of the director, she cannot be saved from the by laws of SHIELD.
Natasha leaned forward, pushing some hair away from your cheek. Her finger brushed the paleâand already bruising - skin there, and you leaned into her touch in your sleep. She smiled, undeniably melted by the subconscious trust you had in her. "Come on, Boss. I need you to open those eyes for me."
As if you had heard her plea, your lashes fluttered, and then your eyes opened, revealing the stunning shade she adored. She greeted you softly, her voice gentle, her eyes locked with those beautiful eyes of yours. "Hey."
"Hey," she softly repeated, beaming at you though fighting back tears, her voice a bit thicker with emotions held in check. Her hand softly ran through your hair, the affection pouring forth freely despite the professional front she usually maintained around you. "How are you feeling?"
"Like I've been strapped to a chair and beat up."
Natasha huffed a slight laugh, but your weak attempt at a glareâdespite your exhausted condition it brought a small smirk to her lips. "Now? You're making jokes now?" she replied, her voice affectionate, her smile growing when you tried to glare.
Your smile was heavy and hazy, fighting against the pull of anesthesia. But it was there, and it was real. "You seem like you need it, agent."
Her hand still glided gently through your hair, tracing over your temple and cheek, as if trying to feel the reality, to confirm you were real and not a ghost. There was a vulnerability in her eyes, a raw emotion barely contained, "I-we need you to be okay."
"Then I'm okay."
The moment stretched, as Natasha felt the warmth of your cheek against her palm, cherishing and committing it to memory. She knew this moment was fleeting, that this vulnerability would soon fade.
"Y/Nâ"
"Natasha," you pressed, and she sat again, pulling your hand into her. "I know you went against orders to come and rescue me in there."
"How is that the problem?!" She shook her head, running a hand through her hair. "And not that I was ordered to stand by and watch whileâ"
"Focus, Natalia," As you crooned her government name, Natasha felt herself refocusing. The soft tone and the use of her true name anchoring her firmly in the present. Your reassurance settled the turmoil in her chest, the quiet command and your words grounding her, bringing her back from the edge of her worry. "You saved me. You. That's all that matters."
She exhaled slowly, some weight lifted by your words. As she leaned forward, she found your hands, interlacing her fingers with yours, "What hurts?" She asked, assessing your pain.
You gave it a test, shifting faintly under the thin hospital blankets. "Everything?"
"They should have you on stronger meds," Natasha growled, her protective instincts flaring, ready to march into the hall and demand the staff provide stronger medication. She gripped your hand gently in hers, her worry and fury evident in the tense lines of her face.
"Mm," You held her hand, shaking your head in disagreement, despite your weakness. You fought to keep her with you by your side, refusing her protective instincts. "No, just...just leave it be."
"Y/N," she whispered, sounding positively agonized about it. "I don't want you to be in pain."
"I'm fine," was the first thing out of your mouth, only to realize that it was utter bullshit as far as Natasha was concerned. You corrected yourself, "just stay. Just...just...please?"
She all but collapsed, weak in the knees at the sight of your eyes pleading with her. She nodded, helpless to do much of anything else for you. She brought your hand up to her lips, bold move, "yeahâyeah, of course, Y/N. I...I'm right here."
You closed your eyes again, evening out your own breathing as well. "If they know I'm awake they'll have you dragged out of here to question us both."
"I can just be daddy's girl and it's done. I think they're forgetting I have that power and title."
Natasha huffed, a small sign of amusement at your joke, knowing full well that you don't and would never use your title as the director's daughter to sidestep consequences. You have earned your title in SHIELD with your own efforts, own sweat and tears.
"They're not coming anywhere near you so long as I'm here."
"Natasha."
"I mean it, Y/N," she reiterated. She gave your hand another squeeze, "they have no right coming to talk to you when they're the reason you're in here. They can wait until you're released, and that's if I'm feeling generous."
You peeled your eyes open again to smile at her. "If only I could have you as protection for every time I had to talk to thoseâ"
You cut yourself off to yawn, failing to cover your mouth, Natasha fussed with your blankets, her tone gentle and commanding. "You should go back to sleep; get all the rest you can before the questioning begins," she whispered, hoping to spare you any unnecessary strain while knowing it was futile.
Your voice was soft, the medication making your muscles feel heavy as you asked, "Can't wait." Your hazy eyes found hers, searching for reassurance. "You'll be here right?"
She smiled at you, keeping you hand firmly in hers, "I'm not going anywhere."
Meanwhile, Yelena and Madisynn peered at the door, witnessing the tender exchange between you and Natasha. Their fist bumping, "Good?" Yelena smirked.
"Good." Madisynn confirmed.
The two women jumped slightly, freezing in surprise as they turned to see your fatherâthe director of SHIELD standing behind them, holding a bouquet of flowers and your favorite egg pie.
"So my daughter and Romanoff..."

Snape: Every house has its flaws. Slytherin pride often leads to blunder. Hufflepuffs can be unnecessarily loyal, leading to harm. Ravenclaw curiosity has led to insanity. And Gryffindor's flaw is simpler than those: stupidity. Utter stupidity.
McGonagall: I beg your pardon? Utter stupidity? Certainly not.
Snape: I spent half of my double period listening to Potter and Weasley feuding over whether 'poison' is spelt with a double 's'. As in poisson, which, as we both know, is French for fish.
McGonagall:
Snape: Granger then explained to them that there is no such word in the English language...
McGonagall: Hermione Granger is in my house. This just disproves your point.
Snape: ... and Weasley then spent the other half of the lesson arguing with her that poisson means nothing else but poison in Norwegian.
McGonagall:
Snape: As the younger ones would say... boo-yah.
McGonagall:
McGonagall: And as the older would say: ten points from Slytherin for talking back to a teacher.
