What radicalized me was Conservative philanthropy.
I've said before that my parents were property managers, which is to say, the people real estate investors who owned apartment buildings hired to act as landlords for them. And they and a lot of my other relatives were really big into investing in real estate as a means of creating generational wealth. (This has not worked out for us, by and large. Some have given up, but others are still hustling today.)
This means that when a local government wants to create a Taskforce on How We're Totally Addressing the Housing Crisis, You Guys, and among all the shelters and charities desperate for funding, they look to appoint someone who can represent the landlords who control most of the housing here... they appoint the kind of people I end up sitting next to at Thanksgiving dinner.
So this story I just shared about landlords and government and housing benefit payment dates?
Yeah. That got shared with me by a conservative. Someone who knows I'm a fruity socialist leech now, and wanted me to know that this was proof that the private sector CARES!
Actually, it was part of an argument about how government or nonprofit housing wasn't a good solution to the housing crisis, because the private sector "can do it more efficiently". The landlords saw something was really wrong and they were having to evict a lot more people than usual! So they called up their buddies in office and got it FIXED! Let us join hands and sing!
I, meanwhile, knew that benefits recipients had been screaming about this problem to national newsmedia for months before the landlords stepped in, so I was less than impressed. Imagine a type of noblesse oblige that only takes notice when they realize they're making people homeless when they might have made a profit off them instead.
Every time conservatives pat themselves on the back for how good they are to the poor, I can't stop seeing just how good to the poor they aren't, most of the time.
(And also: I know how the economics work, and how most of the time the landlords couldn't afford to just let people stay for less money. Mortgages need paying. But that doesn't inspire me to let the landlords off easy; it says to me that we really do need radically different funding models for housing.)

Death trap apt. The "bedroom." You can't stand up, and look at how narrow it is. If you get up in the middle of the night, stumble and fall down those stairs, good night nurse.

many of y’all have never had to stop everything, and i mean everything, you were doing to the surprising sound of deafening chilling siren to literally save your life and, boy, does it show.
when i say deafening i mean a deafening volume, like on the street, from public buildings rooftops everywhere. full fucking volume. chilling? the sound is universal, btw. here’s a taste, hope you never get to hear it live.
and stop everything? why’s that? you have 0-90 seconds to get to protected area. it varies between the safe room in your house to the shelter in your building, to the one across the street, to the stairs at the building (center of the building, missiles tend to hit sides), or simply get as far away from your car and protect your head. and oh, yeah, i mean stop literally everything. from easy things like watching tv, writing, eating, playing and cooking to things you wouldn’t believe you can cut in the middle like showering, driving, breastfeeding, sleeping, pooping and anything you can think of. you have to stop sprint to the protected area as fast as it can. oh, yeah, even if it means, meeting your neighbors in a towel with shampoo still in your hair or at 3am. or both.💩

SHORT DP X DC WRITING PROMPT #2
(Possible crack/one-shot continuation for the Lair of Mystery au)
All of a sudden I had a really stupid idea. Does the House of Mystery have a bathroom?
← Main Prompt
Constantine: Any of you know how to fix a leaky sink pipe in the bathroom
Danny: ...This place has a bathroom?
Constantine: *sputters* What do you mean? It's your house?!
Danny looks at Constantine with a blank expression and puts his hand on the Brit's shoulder.
Danny: John. Sweetie. Buddy. I'm dead. I don't NEED a bathroom.
Constantine puts his head in his hands with a long-suffering groan.
Constantine: Do you know how to fix a leaky pipe or not? You're pretty much the landlord here.
Danny: Oh. Yeah sure. Just let me get the tool box from the lab.
Danny disappears and leaves Constantine with a dumbfounded look on his face.
Constantine: Wha- LAB??
Could just be the tiredness talking but I laughed a lot more at this than I probably should. To the person who said Danny was JLD's landlord, THANK YOU.

I FINALLY MOVED OUT TO A NEW PLACE!!!
i'm absolutely exhausted and i still need to unpack so many things and i still need to buy a proper desk and restock my groceries & supplies and a do a whole lot of other things BUT i'm hoping to get settled in soon so i can get back to the creative endeavors™️✨
love yall, stay safe, take care, and good vibes 🫶🏻
#rin rambles#i dont want to bog this with negativity but i do want to share stuff so imma do it in a way that makes me look forward and not backwards#honestly this wasn't the place that i actually wanted and got excited for several months ago#i had to make adjustments because unfortunately the landlord was a huge red flag and i decided i didn't want to sign#and sure enough she never returned my security deposit of 1.5months until this day despite saying she would every day for like a whole mont#and though it is hard and devastating i don't want to potentially sabotage my own future so i've decided to not take any legal action#i just hope. that that money can be of use to her in some way. get her out of a tough spot perhaps#it was a struggle to get to this point of actually feeling fine letting go without breaking down but!!! it's fine. i'm fine#and karma will find a way if it was truly done out of purely malicious intention!#i'm closing that book and stowing it away lovingly into a shelf because if anything it was. a powerful lesson.#as much as it sucks. never. ever. trust a person when it comes to business or transactions. no matter how 'put together' they seem#always have everything on paper and never EVER pay something until they demonstrate that they can be trusted#anyway#the people helping me move today were super friendly and nice and it made my day!!#and so far i love love love the privacy so much. a bathroom all to myself? a kitchen countertop?? for myself??? that's so crazy#i had to battle thru cobwebs and (fored to) cured my arachnophobia by force /j#and there was a power trip unfortunately but overall everything seems nice! i would have liked having the room on a higher floor but ah wel#ough my back........... _(;3」 z)_

We planned and booked stuff for an entire 4-day vacation in like 2.5 hours today and I’m so proud. One of the reasons I haven’t actually traveled anywhere in years (certainly not for more than a quick weekend con where we had one activity and that was the con) was that the thought of having to plan things for myself seemed so overwhelming and too full of steps that it made me give up before I ever started.
But we did it together! Bast found a cute hotel close to the places we want to visit that is within my budget and has scenic views, and I scoured tourism websites for restaurants for every meal and reserved a table for a fancier date night. I got us full access passes that cover a bunch of historic sites and tickets for a ghost tour and an arboretum, and we found an art museum and an aquarium. All that’s really left is to search up where we can park.
Oh and I’ve got to put in for the time off from work.
Which is the reason we’re going on vacation.
To give me a break from work, for a reason other than ‘will lose these days if I don’t take them off before the year’s over so I end up taking off the entirety of Liminal Spacemas and staying home full of winter-y holiday staring-into-space-ness instead of really feeling like it’s a break.’
Haaaaaahahahahaha vacatioooooon~~ Gonna GO SOMEWHERE with BAST and it’s gonna be NICE.

"Flying"* broom from Kiki's Delivery Service
*Suspended from the ceiling by fishing line, held in place by magnets originally put in place for a smoke detector.
Except for the fishing line I didn't have to buy anything for this so that was great.

Thanks to pulsatingmeat for sending this horrid "newly renovated" 1bd, 1ba apt. for rent in Calgary, Canada. They are calling it a condo and want $900mo. No smoking, pets, or parties. Shared laundry.
Tumblr media
It's in the basement.
Tumblr media
I'm guessin' you have to walk thru this mess to get to it at the far end.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's more of a studio, b/c this is your combination bed/dining/living room. Oh, and the furniture comes with it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I hope the new tenant likes the industrial look, b/c check out the kitchen ceiling. I don't see a stove or fridge, just a sink.
Tumblr media
The bath is actually the hallway and the toilet doesn't quite fit.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
See? It's the hall leading into the living area. There's a door at the other end, though. Is this stuff legal in Canada?

I need to dig up the books and whatnot I read that mentioned it but in like 18th-19th century New England people used to give squirrels to their kids as pets, like the way hamsters are treated today, and I KNOW we're living in the bad timeline because that tradition didn't keep up and lead to legitimately domesticated squirrels. Like squirrels domesticated to the same level as domestic rats and mice would be literallyyyyy the perfect pet.

Fun fact about being a member of clergy in Faerûn: you're expected to become a landlord!
Temples and shrines don't necessarily make that much money, so priests are encouraged to buy land and turn a profit off of tenants (they're not legally allowed to discriminate against followers of rival faiths), and churches often command large swathes of real estate. Houses, farms, companies...
Guess that explains why Bhaalists only need to hand over hard cash but the temple lets them keep land deeds. Even Shar makes an exception to her creed of absolute nihilism to allow her clergy to keep property.
