Friday, January 26: Pantera, "I'll Be Alright"

R.I.P. "Diamond/Dimebag" Darrell Lance Abbott (1966-2004), Vinnie Paul Abbott (1964-2018)

Metal Magic wasn’t very metal, and it certainly wasn’t magical, but considering that the Abbott brothers were still in their teens when their dad helped them make the first Pantera record, it had its moments.  The songs may not have all been there, but a handful of tracks like “I’ll Be Alright” showed an initial spark that would set the band on their way.  In the early days, Pantera was all about having fun, and this track reflected that with enthusiastic playing from every member, and if Terry Glaze’s screeching was always more than a little ridiculous, it also always felt like he was right there in the mix with the Abbotts and Rex “Rocker” Brown.  “I’ll Be Alright” was a no-frills early ‘80s Z-grade headbanger that sounded much more like a group of guys trying to get a party going than shooting for the stars, and that was fundamental to its charm.

Her HAIR, oh my gosh. Lancie's smile, the way he's holding her, hnggnh, he's just so perfect, both of them are! 😍💖 This is honestly the most amazing thing to come home to after a fairly crappy day, I'm absolutely going to treasure this! 💖💖💖

At this point I don't think I need to tell anyone that Lance and Hallie have taken over my OC brain, but Lance had another romance in his life that I like thinking about every so often. From Spring 2012 to Fall 2014, he dated a young woman named Alison Tunney, whom he met at a party of a mutual acquaintance/friend, and whom he got along with extremely well. They were kind of obnoxiously perfect for each other at the time, to be honest, and appeared to be the endgame couple for a while!

They parted ways when Alison - a marine biologist - took a job offer in Australia. Both were realistic enough to realise that that kind of long distance relationship was bound to fail. Their feelings for each other had kinda started changing as well, so in the end they had an expiration date, but they really went strong for a while there and I adore that!

Alison won't make a return, I like to think that she's still in Australia and settled down with a nice Aussie, I just want to introduce her here real quick; I may give her a little headshot (with a nose 😂), too, just so people know who I'm talking about when her name pops up again!

Curt and Dickie live AU

Within a Curt and Dickie make it back to England but aren’t ready to fly again until after Munster. Millie is repatriated earlier (just before D-Day) and is taken back to Thorpe Abbotts. The Flack house psychologist assesses her and decides that it would be better for her to stay in England with Kenny, Curt and Dickie. So apart from a few stays at the hospital, she stays at Thorpe Abbotts until the rest of the war. Dennis goes down sometime after Millie is back in England and tells the rest of the 100th at the Stalag that Millie is alive and at Thorpe Abbotts. This leads to many reunions at the hardstands.

- Repatriation - Curt, Dickie, Kenny, Maggie and other living 100th originals

- Either on Cleatus’ day off or after his last mission in late August - Cleatus with Millie and Kenny

- Bucks escape - Millie and the others find out they are alive

- Bucky, John and (at least) the crew of the M’lle Zig Zig (like in the show)

Obviously you don’t have to write it/ some might be predicting stuff that has happened but 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

Your ideas are giving me all the feels today. 🥺🥺🥺. I am continually impressed by all the genius ideas I get sent and wish that I had the inspiration and time to write them all ... for me and for you all!

As much as Millie would miss her second crew and worry-worry-worry about them back at Stalag Luft III, it would do her good to be back with Curt and Dickie and Kenny and Billy and Sammy and Maggie and everyone. (Just, maybe not Meatball quite yet...) And if we're thinking of a repatriation date around D-Day, give or take a bit, it wouldn't that long before Cleatus arrived in England, and he would find a way to get himself some leave just long enough to come over to Thorpe Abbotts and check on her. (And maybe it would be healing for Millie to be able to talk to Maggie about before and start lancing that wound earlier.)

I've always enjoyed the excellent Rosie-and-Ken-friendship-Gen-fics on AO3, and it would be really interesting to also explore in such an AU whether Rosie would have gotten along with Millie (and with Brady). Rosie and his crew arrive in mid-September, although they don't fly their first mission until Black Week, so there would have been some time theoretically for the three to have met before Munster, including in Sunward I've Climbed, but not much.
