and jiang cheng. being the tough love uncle . having raised the yunmeng jiang clan from the rubble all alone, his whole family dead, some of it on the blame of his own brother, his siblings, his closest friends gone.......and only jin ling there needing his guidance.

THE PARALLEL BETWEEN JIN LING BEING A LIFELINE FOR JIANG CHENG AND A-YUAN FOR LAN WANGJI AFTER THE BATTLE AT THE NIGHTLESS CITY

and like . the fact! that lwj and jc dislike each other!!. jc projects blame onto him for wwx both “leaving” him and indirectly causing their families deaths and when hes so consumed by it he makes wwx an enemy, lwj is there now? trying to protect him?? and lwj, who can never understand the pain that wwx , indirectly or not put jc through, but who was right there when jc tried to kill him and will never allow him to hurt wwx again. and how they like. in a way project blame of their tragedies onto each other while dealing with some type of survivor guilt and in their own way still loving wwx through it all??? amd in way its kind of fundamentally selfish but also tragically understandable? and like when u put it against the fact that after he disappears during the sunshot campaign they were looking for him together and fought together??

JUST. THE CHARACTERS. AND THE RELATIONSHIPS IN THIS. MAN. UGH. GOD.

and like i think thats what makes it so good? its such a sad and painful and violent story, edgy even, but its compelling bc at the center of it there are all of these relationships and different types of love and hope and. :( i love it

jin ling just has that Was Raised by JC energy tho lmao i love him

babie cultivator squad is the perfect ammount of cute and comedic relief while still bearing the weight? of the narrative in a way, both from sizhui and jin lings existences, and also. like. how do i put this. they feel hopeful? they were born after a war, they came of age at a time of relative peace, they dont hold on so closely to the resentments of their parents/father figures, they are specifically shown as more accepting and open minded. and its like.... Hope for the future

one of the ?? things i love the most is the fact that the main cast are often in situations where theyre hunted/running but they like. never wear disguises... just going around in their gorgeous expensive clan clothes and hair ornaments and distinctive spiritual weapons.... maybe w a straw hat on, just for kicks

i Enjoy that, over the course of story, wwx sees that... theres nothing truly to Do, but move on. he saw how his arrogance and his mistakes hurt others, and hes trying to fix what he can, but he already did die for his mistakes and there are things he cant fix and that's. just how it is. even towards jgy, the narrative doesn't go gleefully and completely with "lets make THEM pay bc theyre the big bad" bc its not that simple, and it wouldn't lead anywhere but more pain...

re him and jiang cheng and the wens and kinda. isnt that what nhs did? scheming to displace jgy out of revenge more than any justice and doing so in the most painful way?

your choice in who’s getting horrified by the shirt truly was inspired. at first it felt too rude for lan wangji to point something out like that towards a stranger but i kept thinking about what shirt on lan wangji could possibly enrage wei wuxian but still ring true to lan wangji. and there really was nothing coming to my mind. so i went with your original prompt! just a quick write, i don’t take responsibility for possible ooc characterization -> hope you have fun reading and that it will be somewhat of a ray of sunshine during your day <3

WangXian, modern au, fluff/first-meeting, 1k

It’s not yet past sundown so business is pretty lazy for Wei Wuxian. Most people are just heading home from work, brushing past him without even glancing up from their phones.

The karaoke bar is a bit off the next crossroad but still the street is crowded so Wei Wuxian drifts more towards the corner behind him to not get pushed around too much.

Not that he really minds. It does get a bit boring but he much prefers lazily waving promotional leaflets at passerby’s than actually interacting with the drunk college students that will inevitably take them from him later in the night.

The lingering sunlight also has the additional bonus of masking his light-up LED bunny ears, that really make his employers taste seem very questionable and Wei Wuxian might be the only employee that manages to look cute in them.

An older man, turning the corner collides with his shoulder, glances up and mutters a “Slut” under his breath before pushing past him.

Well, he can’t be everyone’s type.

30 minutes later and the humid air is weighing down on him. He really feels like cursing Jiang Cheng for stealing his mini fan before leaving their flat that morning. Luckily the foot traffic has lessened, so no more sweaty bodies rubbing up against him. Wei Wuxian fans himself with the leaflets in his hand when his eyes fall on a small boy standing on the other side of the broad sidewalk, pointing a finger at him, visibly distraught.

With nothing but the empty entrance to the karaoke bar behind him, he must be the cause of the child’s upset (He should really tell the owner that the bunny ears aren’t working if even children aren’t won over by them)

The look on the little guys face is concerning however. He still has his finger accusingly pointed at him only turning his face when someone calls out to him.

A very elegant man in billowing white clothes is rushing up to the kid, looking very calm and collected despite the speed at which he’s moving. He softly closes a hand over the child’s outstretched finger and softly caresses his hair when the child is looking up at him with what must be questioning eyes.

The very elegant man is turning towards him now, saying something towards the child before putting his hand in his and walking over.

The child tries to keep pace and looks absolutely adorable in his kindergarten uniform. The man is absolutely gorgeous. But also very severe looking. Wei Wuxian can’t help but flash him a teasing smile, his demeanor just begging to be disturbed.

Gorgeous man stops in front of him and gives a small bow.

“I’m so sorry that my child pointed out how your shirt-“, the stranger starts before eyeing Wei Wuxian up and down. “....actually, nevermind I agree, that shirt is horrendous.”

His face is absolutely void of any readable expression but the small child next to him is nodding his head seriously when Wei Wuxian gives him a disbelieving look.

“60% off between 8pm and midnight, almost as cheap as this cutie”, the child recites what is printed on Wei Wuxian’s shirt and now it is the turn on gorgeous stranger to get an incredulous look by Wei Wuxian.

“Toddlers shouldn’t be allowed to read.”

“Ah-Yuan is 4.” Gorgeous man replies as if that’s an explanation.

“Well, at least he doesn’t understand the underlying meaning of it, no?” Wei Wuxian tries to not be mortified at the thought of possibly kindergarten children being judgmental of his apparent promiscuity.

“No human being is cheap. Everyone is inva...” the child, Ah-Yuan, pipes up.

“Invaluable.” Gorgeous man calmly finishes little Ah-Yuan’s saying.

Wei Wuxian can’t help but crack up at that display. How cute! But also how annoyingly prim and proper. Not to start on the righteousness.

“Well, you have to take it up with my boss. But with my wage, I doubt he has heard of human dignity.” He winks at the stranger. Who only furrows his brows ever so slightly in return.

Ah-Yuan looks like he is ready to take it up with his boss. What a delightful kid.

“It shouldn’t be right for an employer to demean you in this way.”

“Oh, why would he demean me? Sure, the wording really isn’t inspired but there is nothing wrong with applying a worth to one’s own body...or selling it.” He adds, making sure that Ah-Yuan is still busy getting his small rage against Wei Wuxian’s boss in check.

It’s not that he wants to be contrary for the sake of it but now that he’s seen the eyebrows furrow he really wants to elicit a more overt reaction. Preferably an infuriated eyebrow twitch. Ohhhhhh, gorgeous stranger would look really hot scowling at him.

“It is not you, but your employer using your economical needs to put you in a position where you believe that wearing a shirt putting a price on you is an acceptable condition for getting paid a minimal wage.”

That is a lot of rage at once. Wei Wuxian gives the stranger his most winning smile.

“Sure, but who isn’t giving into economical pressure in some way. I still have the choice to quit, tell everyone about the shirts and make it so no one wants to work for him. The hassle just isn’t worth it at the moment. I’m just lazy.” Wei Wuxian tips a finger against his lips as if he’s in deep thought. “Or is there a difference between putting a pricetag on my physical labour in some instance and not in another?”

The gorgeous stranger stares at his tipping finger but no sign of real upset yet.

“What would you think is an acceptable price for me then?” Wei Wuxian pushes, smirk audible in his voice.

As expected the strangers head jerks up and an angry stare is leveled at him that makes Wei Wuxian’s heart beat faster and his skin tingle.

“Come.” The stranger tells the child before all but storming off, white clothes fluttering behind him as they leave.

“You have to tell me your name, so I know how to address you when we argue next time!” Wei Wuxian happily yells after him.

There’s no reply.

(Days later, Ah-Yuan – who’s kindergarten seems to be in the neighborhood will walk by and tell Wei Wuxian his dads name.

On occasion the beautiful man – Lan Wangji – will walk Ah-Yuan home and get into heated arguments with Wei Wuxian on the way.

The arguments turn more into teasing debates over time.

Wei Wuxian quits working at the karaoke bar, the owner really is a wanker. But he doesn’t miss the extra pay because Lan Zhan has decided that he’d much rather talk to Wei Wuxian over a cup of tea when he waits for Ah-Yuan to finish his day. Much more civil than getting caught yelling in the streets – not that Lan Zhan raises his voice, but by now Wei Wuxian knows what yelling looks like for Lan Zhan.

He persuades the father son duo to join him for karaoke. Ah-Yuan is delighted. Lan Zhan is delightfully bashful about it since he has never been before.

After Ah-Yuan has passed out from too much singing on the couch there might have been a first kiss exchanged. No extra charge)

Wei Wuxian can whistle really loudly. like, REALLY loudly

and Jiang Cheng gets so fricking startled by it and he hates it, so WWX makes sure to do it as often as possible when JC is around >:)

it’s useful for calling dogs though, so JC began training his dogs to respond to the whistles >:D

so recently whenever Lan Wangji comes over to the Jiang residence, he always spots WWX stuck on a tree, a roof, or sometimes even a window ledge

LWJ: “Wei Ying what did you do?” WWX: “Lan Zhan!!! Ahaha... nothing... just enjoying the nice weather up here...”

JC, loudly from inside the house: “Good morning Wangji, did you know dogs can detect liars?”

LWJ secretly already knows, but he just sighs and extends his arms, and WWX grins before jumping down and landing smack inside his embrace, “Thank you Lan Zhan, you’re the best!!”

LWJ: “please stop annoying your brother” WWX: “aiyaa it’s fine, I’m just trying to make his life more exciting you know, it must be soooo boring without a girlf *JC whistles for his doggos* AAAHH I’M SORRY I’M SORRY!!! I TAKE IT BACK!!! LAN ZHAN PROTECT MEEEE!!”

Nie Huaisang is suuuuper into bird-watching. it’s just so calming and the birds are so pretty!

he feeds them too, every morning, and now all the birds in the neighborhood just flock to his balcony at 8 AM to get their fill. Nie Mingjue complains that they’re now all too fat and will poop all over the neighborhood, but does NHS care? no ^^

I bet NHS would be the nerd who trains his birds to deliver messages and stuff... and it wORKS. he and WWX have a secret messaging system now >:3

Jin Guangyao totally has a model insta account. literally, who wouldn’t sell their soul for those dimples?? 😩

he’s like, super fashionable. and what’s more, he rocks all types of clothing, from e-boy to formal to traditional... he can even rock no clothing 👀👀

the people who have been featured on this insta includes: NHS, the Lan brothers (surprisingly), JYL, and Wen Qing. JGY and WQ have actually formed an unlikely friendship over this.

speaking of fashion, since she grew up with a brother and no parents/mother, WQ never really had anyone to talk about this to. so she was literally so overjoyed when JYL and her became friends.

it’s the funniest thing ever when people see them walking together: JYL with her cutie-pie-soft-flowy-pastel vibe, and WQ with the red-and-black-angel-of-death vibe lol

but they appreciate each other’s fashion senses though. they even swap clothes sometimes. and e-girl!JYL really makes Jin Zixuan feel some type of way 👀

JGY definitely has piercings. people look at his smile and thinks he’s the cute goody-two-shoes type, but then he starts laughing and omg is that a tongue piercing??

Lan Xichen would know 👀

Chapter 3

Tuesday, Sixth Day with Wei Ying

Lan Wangji wakes up with a hard cock, again. This time, he can remember his dream. Not every image is clear, not every word spoken still audible. But he remembers enough to know that like Nie Huaisang’s poetry book, it is not as indecent as he expected. There was a kiss, but it was almost chaste. They were lying on Lan Wangji’s couch, Wei Ying on top, smiling down at him. One kiss, just one kiss and then Wei Ying put his head on Lan Wangji’s chest and fell asleep in his arms.

Lan Wangji wants that. He wants that more than what he’s envisioned in the shower. If he can have only one of those two, he wants gentle kisses and falling asleep together and feeling so, so warm and happy…

Oh.

Lan Wangji has fallen for Wei Wuxian.

Lan Wangji has often mildly wondered whether it would happen for him one day. After what his brother went through, he has occasionally feared it. Because he had known that he would be like Xichen. That he’d fall quickly and completely and stubbornly. When it seemed that maybe it would not happen for him, he hadn’t been disappointed. Life seemed to be much quieter and simpler… without.

Now it has happened. Wei Wuxian has happened.

Now that he knows what this is, that it is not just misplaced loneliness or boredom, he feels… relief. It does not feel scary. These feelings are not a bother. Liking Wei Ying is not bothersome.

Now that he knows, he can adapt.

Instead of letting Wei Wuxian disrupt his routine, he can include him in it.

Today, he packs more lunch than is strictly necessary for only Lan Wangji. He shares it with Wei Ying. He didn’t expect to be so fond of the sight of Wei Ying eating carrots.

(Things he learns about Wei Wuxian during lunch:

He has a sister called Jiang Yanli and yesterday he visited her and her toddler, who is “the loudest baby on the planet, Lan Zhan, he somehow must have gotten his uncle’s temper, even though Jiang Cheng would never yell at a baby or an animal, everyone else is fair game though, except maybe Wen Qing, I don’t know if it’s because of fear or attraction or both, who knows with this guy and…” and then he abruptly stops talking and for one second looks so sad that Lan Wangji almost drops his lunch box. Jiang Cheng must be his brother. What happened, why is Wei Wuxian sad? He should never be sad. How can Lan Wangji help, how can he… Wei Wuxian smiles again and changes the topic.

Wei Wuxian likes clementines and is disappointed that Lan Wangji didn’t bring any.

“Aaaah, nooo, what is that over there? Do you see those clouds, Lan Zhan? Don’t tell me it’s supposed to rain today?” “Mn.” “Really? Lan Zhan, say it isn’t so! A-Yuan will be so disappointed! We wanted to go visit the ants today! Mhm, do you think I could keep ants as a pet?” “Wei Wuxian.” “You’re right, you’re right. They’d be happier outside.”

Who is A-Yuan? Why… ants? There’s so many things he wants to ask Wei Ying, he wants to know everything about him. But Wei Ying should tell him at his own pace. Or not tell him at all. Lan Wangji will not pry.)

Wednesday, Seventh Day with Wei Ying

Liking Wei Wuxian is exciting. It is the first time Lan Wangji feels like this and now that he’s made it through those first few confusing days, he’s determined to treasure every moment of what comes after. Of liking Wei Ying.

He has no plans of doing such things as confessing or flirting. Or rather, no immediate plans for the first and no idea how to go about the latter anyway. For now, he just wants to enjoy how warm his heart feels whenever he sees Wei Wuxian. How he feels like smiling, when Wei Wuxian does something he’d find annoying if anyone else did it.

Lan Wangji wants to do things that make Wei Ying smile. He wants to see all the different kinds of smiles that Wei Ying has to offer.

There’s one thing he aches to do, though… He would like to call him Wei Ying. He likes how Wei Wuxian calls him ‘Lan Zhan’, how it always sounds playful, as though it is a name that brings him happiness. He wonders if Wei Wuxian would feel the same if he calls him ‘Wei Ying’. Probably not, he is not a playful man. But he wants… Wants to colour the name with the intimacy it deserves.

Once again, he cannot concentrate on his paper. The deadline is next week and the deadline Lan Wangji has set for himself is on Saturday. He is maybe halfway done.

However, what is more urgent to him right now is to figure out the perfect moment to call Wei Wuxian ‘Wei Ying’. To Wei Wuxian it probably will not matter. He offered the name up so easily after all. But maybe having Lan Wangji call him that will have some meaning. Maybe he’ll be able to tell that it means something to Lan Wangji - though hopefully he won’t know quite how much.

When the moment comes, it is a small one, but to Lan Wangji it is perfect.

Wei Wuxian’s bun has almost come undone and he takes out his hair tie, to tie it up properly again. The hair tie snaps. Wei Wuxian pouts. Lan Wangji always has spares. He takes out his spare hair tie. He holds it out to Wei Wuxian.

“Wei Ying.”

Wei Wuxian freezes and stares. He blinks. He blinks more rapidly. He stares at the light blue hair tie resting on Lan Wangji’s palm. Then he smiles . A smile Lan Wangji has not seen yet. A new, impossibly bright smile. Just for him. Lan Wangji returns that smile, even though his might be a tad more restrained. It is no less sincere.

(Wei Wuxian’s books for the day: apparently any book he could find about bees and beekeeping. Hm. Better than ant-keeping, he supposes.)

(Things he learns about Wei Wuxian during lunch:

Wei Ying does not, in fact, plan on keeping bees. He just finds them “cute”. Fair enough.

Lan Wangji brought clementines today. Wei Ying is delighted. Another smile for his collection.

He is meeting Nie Huaisang for drinks later. “Lan Zhan… Lan Zhan, you don’t want to come, do you? We’re just gonna have some beer in the park. Huaisang said you would never sit on the grass, though. I could bring a blanket? Haha, ignore me, I’m just talking nonsense, of course you don’t want to-” “Busy.” “Ah yes, of course you already have plans! Of course, of course, Lan Zhan must be so popular! Everyone will want to meet him when he’s not busy in the library! I’m so lucky to get to see you every day, aren’t I?” Lan Wangji does not know what to say. Before he can say that Wei Ying is wrong, Lan Wangji is the lucky one, Wei Ying has already changed the topic again. )

Thursday, Eighth Day with Wei Ying, First Day of Lan Wangji’s Heartbreak

Lan Wangji is determined to get a lot of work done today. Just because he’s in love, doesn’t mean he has to neglect his studies. He has it all worked out: he will not look up any more books. He has enough quotes and enough notes for three papers. It is time to focus solely on the actual writing part.

He has managed to get the barebones for a full chapter down, when Wei Wuxian appears.

Wei Ying is wearing Lan Wangji’s hair tie.

Lan Wangji forgets how to breathe for a few seconds. Oh. Oh.

He is not going to get anything else done today.

He spends about an hour switching between looking at Wei Ying and looking at Wei Ying’s reflection in the window. He considers this to be an excellent use of his time.

And then Wei Wuxian’s phone buzzes and Lan Wangji opens his mouth to remind Wei Wuxian to put it on silent mode, a reminder he has to give every day, when -

“Oh no, Lan Zhan! Lan Zhan, look! Ah, I cannot handle it, my little radish is the cutest!”

Wei Wuxian shoves his phone in Lan Wangji’s face and on the screen he sees a child grinning at the camera, full of mischief. The child could be any age between 2 and 6; Lan Wangji has not met many children in his life, so he doesn’t know. The child seems to be responsible for the many braids decorating the hair of a man about their age, who is smiling gently while taking the selfie.

“A-Yuan is a natural born stylist, isn’t he? What an improvement, don’t you think? Wen Ning’s hair is so lovely but usually it’s even more of a mess than mine. Ah, he looks so handsome, haha!”

There’s a strange buzzing in Lan Wangji’s ears. He watches as Wei Wuxian takes his phone back and then begins typing a reply excitedly and muttering exactly what he is typing for Lan Wangji to hear.

“Cuties!!! Can’t wait to see my boys later!”

He feels faint. Wei Wuxian has a child. Wei Wuxian is married, with a kid. Wei Wuxian is a dad. He has a very cute family. He takes his son to go see ants when it’s not raining. His husband makes him congee in the morning.

Lan Wangji closes his laptop, collects his pens and notes and puts it all in his bag.

“Oh? Time for lunch? Lan Zhan, it’s not even 12 yet! Are you very hungry today? I understand completely. Did you maybe bring more clementines, they were -”

“Not lunch. Leaving.”

“Oh… You have to go? And here I thought that you only go home to sleep! Even Lan Zhan can’t study all day, so no one can expect me to! I should tell this to my professors. Let me just grab my things and -”

“Leaving.”

And with that, he turns around and leaves. Flees.

He accepts a delivery (a coffee maker) - not thinking of Wei Ying.

He plays the guqin for an hour - not thinking about Wei Ying.

Dinner, exercise, looking at pictures of Cloud and Jade (his bunnies), reading - never thinking about Wei Ying.

Lying in bed, falling asleep - not thinking about Wei Ying, his smile, his dimples, his…

Not thinking.

Friday, Ninth Day with Wei Ying, Second Day of Lan Wangji’s Heartbreak

Lan Wangji tries his best to function as usual. His morning is like every morning. He arrives at the library like every morning. He opens his laptop, takes out his notes.

He stares at the blinking cursor.

“Lan Zhan! Good morning!”

How is it already time for Wei Wuxian to arrive? Lan Wangji is not prepared. He’d wanted, needed some time to compose himself.

But now Wei Wuxian is here, wearing his hair tie once again. However, this time, the sight makes him miserable. He’d thought that it had meant something, that it… He is so foolish. Maybe Wei Ying just likes the colour blue. Maybe all his other hair ties have snapped and he cannot be bothered to buy new ones.

Wei Wuxian hasn’t sat down yet, hasn’t taken over his side of the table. He’s staring at Lan Wangji, frowning. Waiting.

Ah…

“Morning.”

Lan Wangji is pretty confident that it sounded like a perfectly normal greeting, but Wei Wuxian still hesitates.

“Lan Zhan… are you okay? Is everything alright? You left so quickly yesterday and looked so pale… I was wo-”

Wei Wuxian flushes and then laughs sheepishly. Why is he…

“Ah, Lan Zhan, you’ve finally succeeded in making me come to the library earlier! ‘Two hours is not enough, Wei Wuxian.’ Your words must have finally sunk in!”

He keeps filling the air with his chatter, as he finally sits down and gets out his notebook and then… they both notice that he does not have any books.

“Oops, look at me, so unprepared. That is what happens, when I get here too early! Now I have to go back and look for something good to read! Or I’ll just have to read about…” He stretches out one arm and leans so far to the side, that he almost falls off his chair, but eventually manages to grab a random book without having to get up. “ ‘Agricultural Reform and Developments of 19th Century Russia’ . Ah… hahaha, I’m sure there’s something to be learned from this!”

“Wei Ying.”

Lan Wangji does not know whether he’s reacting to Wei Wuxian’s nervous energy or whether Wei Wuxian is picking up on Lan Wangji’s inner turmoil. He wants to reassure him that everything is alright, but…

“Mhm? Oh, Lan Zhan, I know, I know, no talking in the library!”

Ah, he hadn’t even thought of that.

If Wei Wuxian isn’t talking anymore, maybe he can focus on feeling… not like this. He wants to return to enjoying his time with Wei Wuxian. Maybe once he has shut down his inappropriate feelings, it can be possible.

Wei Wuxian stays quiet, but keeps throwing glances at him and he chews on his lip even more than usual.

Lan Wangji tries to ignore it, he really does, but…

“Wei Ying?”

Wei Wuxian looks as though he’s caught him eating prawn chips while handling a precious first edition.

“Ahaha, nothing, nothing.”

“Wei Ying.”

“It’s just… you’re frowning a lot today, Lan Zhan.”

“...”

“I know, you think you frown a lot every day, but today it’s different! You have many different frowns, Lan Zhan, didn’t you know? Ah, I’m being silly, aren’t I? Just… are you sick? Are you worried about something? Is your paper not going well? Can I help? I know I seem as though I don’t know anything useful, but I’m actually very smart and -”

“I know Wei Ying is smart.”

“Oh…”

“I’m… fine.”

“Are you sure?”

“It’s just… family.”

He does not say “My heart aches, because liking Wei Ying is beautiful and I don’t want it to end.” He does not say “I didn’t realise I wanted these things until I thought of sharing them with you.”

“Aaah, family issues. I know too well, don’t worry, Lan Zhan. I know how painful… I know! Lan Zhan, let’s not do work today! I’ll take you out, okay? We can go have ice cream and throw pebbles into the pond next to the Department of Botany and -”

“Wei Ying.”

Lan Wangji wants that. He wants that so much. But he does not think he can handle Wei Ying caring for him today. The more he’d try to share his warmth with Lan Wangji, the sadder he’d be that he has to let go of these feelings he wanted to feel for as long as possible.

“I should go… take care of it.”

He thinks Wei Wuxian looks disappointed for a second, but then his smile is back on his face.

“You should! Lan Zhan, so responsible! You… you should go and take care of family issues, talk it out before… yes… “

“Mn.”

He packs his things and is relieved to see his hands don’t look as shaky as they feel.

“Wait. Lan Zhan.”

“Mn?”

“Will I… uhm, will you be here on Monday?”

“Monday.”

He’ll have the whole weekend to get a handle on his feelings. It didn’t take him much longer to fall for Wei Ying, surely it is long enough to… undo it?

He doesn't like lying, not even to himself. How could there ever be enough time to stop liking Wei Wuxian.

He’ll still have to try.

Saturday, Wei Ying-less, Full of Heartbreak

Lan Wangji is not yet ready to think about…

He has a paper to finish anyway. There’s no reason he has to miss his set deadline, just because he’s heartbroken.

Lan Wangji works on his paper from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Then it is done.

He meditates on the couch for an hour. It is not napping, he might be lying down and his eyes might be closed and maybe he nodded off for a tiny second there but it is not napping.

Then he prints out his paper and goes to have dinner with his brother.

Lan Xichen is worried about him. His brother has always been the only one to accurately gauge what mood Lan Wangji is in. Well… until…

“You have many different frowns, Lan Zhan, didn’t you know?”

Wei Wuxian has different smiles, Lan Wangji has different frowns. Even if Wei Wuxian wasn’t married, Lan Wangji should not burden him with his frowning heart.

“Wangji!”

Apparently his brother has already called his name a few times.

“Ah… I’m fine.”

He can’t see Xichen’s face from his current position, but he can hear him making his best effort to not roll his eyes.

“Wangji, you’re clearly struggling with something. You asked me to read your paper to ‘check whether it is written in a language humans can understand’.”

Mhm, he did say that, didn’t he.

“I’ve just been… distracted.”

“And what has distracted you so much that you needed to lie down on my carpet for, let me see, twenty minutes now?”

Ah, yes, he did lie down.

“Playing with bunnies.”

It is not a lie, technically. Cloud is currently sitting on top of his forehead.

Xichen sighs and then sits down next to Lan Wangji. Cloud is being lifted from his forehead and replaced by Xichen’s hand stroking his hair. Like he did when they were younger, much younger.

“Not a child.”

He does not move his head though and Xichen does not stop stroking his hair.

“But you’re sad.”

“Mn.”

“You were really happy last week.”

“Mn.”

“And now you’re sad. What happened, Wangji?”

“I… ”

Xichen doesn’t say anything, just waits for him to find the words.

“I’m in love.”

“You met someone?”

“Met him in the library.”

“And why are you sad? Did he… is he not a nice person?”

“Wei Ying is… the most…” How could he find words to describe Wei Ying? It would be impossible for anyone, but especially for Lan Wangji, who keeps most of his words in his head. “… wonderful.”

“Why are you lying on my carpet then?”

Xichen really is the best brother for Lan Wangji. Even though getting information out of Lan Wangji is like complex brain surgery, he never grows impatient. And he keeps stroking his hair.

“My feelings are improper.”

“Why…”

“I think… he’s married.”

Lan Wangji squeezes his eyes shut as he says that.

“You think he’s married?”

“Mn.”

“Did he tell you?”

“Indirectly.”

“Wangji.”

“Picture of… his son and husband.”

“Did he say that they were his son and his husband?”

“... No.”

“Did you ask? ”

“... No.”

“Wangji, honestly.”

Maybe even Xichen reaches the end of his patience eventually.

“There’s no reason for Wei Wuxian not to be married.”

“Lan Wangji!”

Xichen slaps his forehead. Well, it is more of a determined pat. But coming from Xichen, it definitely counts as a slap. Lan Wangji huffs and then sits up, so he can frown at his brother. Xichen closes his eyes and Lan Wangji is sure that he’s rolling his eyes behind his eyelids. When he opens them again, he smiles, albeit a tad strained.

“Wangji, I know that this is all… unfamiliar to you. But before you go ahead and play out a tragic love story all on your own… Why don’t you ask this Wei Ying whether he is actually married?”

That sounds… reasonable, but also impossible.

“And, even if he has a partner… that doesn’t make your feelings improper. You’re in love, that’s beautiful, Wangji.”

“I like... liking Wei Ying.”

Xichen smiles at him and puts Cloud in Lan Wangji’s lap. Lan Wangji stares down at her and pats her head the way she likes it.

“I don’t want to stop liking him.”

A teardrop falls down on Cloud’s ear.

His brother doesn’t say anything, but after a short while, Jade’s grey-tipped ears appear in his view and now he has two bunnies in his lap. No more teardrops fall.

“Why don’t you sleep here tonight, Wangji? I’ll make us congee in the morning.”

“Alright.”

For a while, they sit in silence, both petting the bunnies in Lan Wangji’s lap. Until Lan Wangji’s heart hurts a little less.

Sunday, Wei Ying-less, Maybe a little less Heartbreak?

Lan Wangji wakes up well rested. He doesn’t sleep here often anymore, but it is still his home. Even though Xichen turned his old room into a yoga-physical therapy-massage-exercise studio after Lan Wangji moved out to live closer to university. Just like the presence of his brother, this flat instantly makes him feel calm and safe. The bunnies help, too. Though maybe he should have a word with his brother about his… love for plants. Every time Lan Wangji visits, his brother introduces him to a new plant. At this point, there aren’t many free surfaces left. Lan Wangji doesn’t mind plants, but he worries that this means that Xichen will see even less need to leave the house.

They have breakfast together on the balcony. They’re still wearing their pyjamas, definitely breaking Lan Rules,which is something they like to indulge in when they spend Sunday mornings together. Lan Wangji feels… better.

He says as much to his brother, who looks relieved.

“Listen, Wangji. I was thinking… The name Wei Wuxian feels familiar.”

“Nie Huaisang is friends with him.”

“Is he? Oh, why don’t I ask Mingjue-”

“No.”

“Why not? Mingjue is very discreet, he could-”

“Xichen, Mingjue is not discreet.”

“Haha, maybe not. You could ask Huaisang then.”

Lan Wangji does under no circumstances want Nie Huaisang to know about… things.

“Huaisang meddles. ”

“What if-”

“No.”

“Then I guess you’ll have to talk to Wei Wuxian yourself.”

“... ugh.”

They sit in silence for a while, drinking green tea and enjoying the morning sun.

“Wangji.”

“Mn.”

“I think… I want to start working again.”

Lan Wangji looks at his brother and smiles.

Monday, Tenth Day with Wei Ying

Lan Wangji is excited for this day. Xichen is right, there is no reason for him to try to stop or change his feelings for Wei Ying. He will ask him during lunch about his family situation. It doesn’t matter what he replies. Wei Wuxian’s friendship is a gift and no lesser than anything else. It is enough to spend time with him and love him quietly.

He prepares well. He makes and packs lunch for two (plenty of clementines). He packs an extra thermos with coffee for Wei Ying. He spent an hour yesterday with the instructions of his coffee machine and looking up on the internet how to make good coffee. Then he did three trial runs. To him, they all tasted the same, but then all coffee is just different flavours of awful to him. Wei Ying does not seem to have high standards for coffee anyway.

Since his first paper is done ( “I’m a human and I can understand this perfectly, Wangji. Well done.” ), he spends the time until Wei Ying arrives meticulously planning out a work schedule for his next paper that is due in two weeks.

Wei Wuxian arrives at exactly 10:30 a.m., wearing the blue hair tie, a smile, shorts and his flip flops that look as though they’ll fall apart at any minute and Lan Wangji’s heart is at ease. He smiles at Wei Ying.

Thud.

Wei Wuxian has dropped his book and is staring at Lan Wangji, eyes wide open. A flush dusts his cheeks.

“Wei Ying?”

“Lan Zhan! You can’t just… you… “ Wei Ying blinks a couple of times and then bends down to collect his book. Today he’s reading… Lan Wangji flushes.

“ Wei Ying. ”

“Huh?” Wei Ying follows Lan Wangji’s look and then starts laughing. “Ah, this? ‘Hard Times Call For Gentle Loving’ ? Huaisang said it’s a classic, and he can always be relied on for good reading material!”

The cover shows two muscled men kissing. They’re naked except for a conveniently draped blanket. The back of Lan Wangji’s neck feels hot.

“Not in the library.”

Not in the library in front of Lan Wangji. Please.

“Lan Zhan, I always follow your rules but this one makes no sense! What else should I do here if not read? Besides, I got this from here!”

Whoever is running Gusu University Library is doing a very questionable job.

“Don’t worry, you can read it after I’m done! Do you want me to mark the best parts for you?”

“Wei Ying!”

“Lan Zhan!”

“... don’t use highlighters on library books.”

Wei Ying looks delighted and Lan Wangji feels his own lips twitch, even though his neck still feels hot. Wei Ying suddenly clutches his chest.

“Ah, Lan Zhan, what are you doing to me! All these smiles today, I can’t handle it! Are you feeling better then? Are your family matters settled?”

“Mn.”

“I’m so glad! I was hoping all weekend that you’d feel better today!”

“Wei Ying… thank you.”

“Eh? For what?”

“Caring.”

Wei Ying opens his mouth, but then seems to think better of whatever he was about to say and simply looks Lan Wangji in the eyes. Lan Wangji holds his gaze and the moment stretches on and maybe he should ask now, why should he wait until lunch and then -

Wei Wuxian laughs, shakes his head and then opens his indecent book.

(Things he learns about Wei Wuxian during lunch:

He really likes the coffee Lan Wangji made.

He’s still sore because Wen Qing made him clean all Sunday. “All the windows, too! Who cleans windows, Lan Zhan? Well, you probably do. But you’re so tall, you don’t need to balance on a wonky chair to reach all corners! I almost fell! So dangerous, why do people clean? It’ll just get dirty again!”

He’s more than halfway through ‘Hard Times Call For Gentle Loving’ and summarises the best parts for Lan Wangji. The sun is very hot today.

He does not learn whether Wei Wuxian is married, because he forgot to ask. He will ask tomorrow.)

The Untamed/陈情令 Rewatch, Episode 3 (spoilers for everything)

(covers some of MDZS chap 13 and erm...that’s it. They mostly go rogue for this ep*)

Really, bless Team CQL for transforming what was only an anecdote in the novel into one of the most beautiful scenes in the show. The first time Wei Ying and Lan Zhan first crossed swords played out like a moonlite, rooftop ballet and it is completely breath-taking and romantic and perfect. What makes this scene even more meaningful to me now is the added sense of poignancy of knowing that they will never be able to spar like that again due to Wei Wuxian’s diminished abilities in his Mo Xuanyu form. Although, even before his rebirth they wouldn’t have been able to repeat this dance since Wei Ying's extraordinary swordsmanship had already gone away with his golden core. It's yet another reminder of not only how much he’s lost, but also how great a sacrifice he made for Jiang Cheng. Just thinking about that is enough to make my heart ache like crazy all over again over how much Wei Ying loves his bro and how much he went through for him without JC even knowing it for such a long time.

But back to happier thoughts, what I also loved about this scene is just how downright adorable Wei Ying was being. Actually, he really was being a total mischievous cutie during most of his time at Cloud Recesses, which makes sense since this is the Wei Wuxian that was still brimming with boyish charm and innocence as his life still hadn’t been touched by heartbreak and tragedy yet. That reminds me of another reason why I am so impressed with Xiao Zhan as an actor is because he basically had to portray three different roles in The Untamed—as the youthful, wide-eyed Wei Ying, followed by the more bitter and mature Yiling Patriarch, and then finally the carefree yet jaded Mo Xuanyu—and he performed each persona with equal aplomb while injecting noticeable differences in each phase of WWX’s life as exemplified by alterations in his posture, expressions and even the way he says his lines. I'm not familiar with what acting awards are available in China’s entertainment industry, but I hope he receives some sort of award recognition for his work. He definitely deserves some nominations at least.

That is not to say that Wang Yibo was being a slouch either; even though I had my doubts about him initially, I do still recognize that playing a stoic character is not an easy task since he had to find creative ways to avoid falling into dullness. A good deal of microexpressing is involved that can be difficult for an unseasoned and non-professionally trained actor, but WYB definitely lived up to the challenge as the show progressed. But because WWX is the more blatantly dynamic character, one’s attention is naturally drawn to him, even I was more focused on him at first, so I ended up neglecting what was going on with WYB’s Lan Zhan. It was only after revisiting this episode that I was truly able to appreciate the subtlety of performance.

While it’s hard to imagine anyone being able to resist Wei Ying’s charms, I do believe Lan Zhan was indeed mostly irritated by him during their initial interactions. At the same time, however, he also clearly noticed that there was more to WWX than meets the eye since he was definitely intelligent (after all, he correctly deduced, twice, what was going on with the injured cultivator Lan Zhan brought back) and he was also quite skilled since their sword fight ended at a draw. But because Lan Zhan had years of propriety instilled in him by Uncle Lan, his automatic reaction to someone who was as unruly as Wei Ying had to be instant disapproval and annoyance. The irony of that is most likely because Wei Ying was such an annoyance to Lan Zhan that he couldn’t help but constantly notice him as a result, as one would do with an eyesore, so even from the first moment they met, his attention was already captured. It’s not the most positive way to start a relationship to be sure, but obviously it worked out for the best in the long run, especially once Lan Zhan got to know Wei Ying better and that animosity turned into something more affectionate.

Big Brother Appreciation Time

There are many reasons to love big bro Lan Xichen—he is such a sweet, caring, gentle, considerate, and loving soul who is also a skilled and talented cultivator—the least of which is his intent on playing matchmaker between his little brother and WWX right from the start. I loved that he noticed something in Wei Ying immediately and realized he would be a good person for LWJ to have in his life. Bless him for being so observant and intelligent.

Random Bits of Randomness

If Lan Qiren knew that this rude, improper kid would one day be the person to “corrupt” his beloved nephew and steal his pure, innocent heart, he probably would’ve spit up all the blood in his body and dropped dead right then and there. I will always laugh at just how offended he looked when Wei Ying dared to rest Suibian on his desk, as if he had dumped dog shit in front of him instead.

I just wanted to commend Mian Mian’s fellow sect-mate on the left there who, even though she was not complimented on her good looks or even given a second glance by WWX, still generously talked Mian Mian into allowing the Jiangs to stay at the hotel. I thought she deserved some credit for her nice gesture.

Not having read the novel yet when I first watched this episode, I was actually shocked at the reveal that Shijie was engaged to Jin Zixuan because I would never have thought they had that relationship from this scene. I know JZX didn’t really have any intention of honoring that arranged marriage at this point in the story, but the rudeness he allowed his servant to get away with was still unbelievable. I mean, seriously what the hell, she was still his fiancee, he hadn’t broken off the engagement yet, how DARE he allow that nobody back there address Shijie and his potential future in-laws in such a rude way. The fact that he actually kicked them out of the hotel was also shocking because it felt completely unnecessary. I really didn't like JZX because of this moment and that sentiment stayed with me for quite some time. What made the scene sadder is Shijie obviously was crushing on him and for the longest time I couldn’t understand why because I thought she totally could do better AND deserved better. I can’t say that I ever learned to love JZX, but I definitely don’t dislike him anymore.

Though I’ve been pretty critical of the CGI in The Untamed for the first two episodes, I do want to point out that not all of it is horrible: I was actually impressed with how both Cloud Recesses and Nightless City looked, even though I think their design for Nightless City was rather off the mark since it no longer suited its name. Since they were going to go with the dark theme and make the Wen Sect as blatantly villainous as possible, the production team should’ve just changed Nightless City’s name to Forever Night City (“長夜城”). Personally, I would’ve preferred it more if they had just stuck with the design of the Wen sect’s residence and uniforms as they were described in the novel (which was beautifully brought to life in the donghua) since I liked how deceptively righteous the Wens seemed. In CQL, they were so obviously the bad guys that they bordered on being cartoonish, especially Wen Ruohan (portrayed by Xiu Qing). Man, his performance simply was NOT working for me AT ALL. Even his make-up was a mess...looked like it was melting off of him all the time. In contrast, I thought Wen Chao (portrayed by He Peng) was bit much at first too, but then eventually I started to appreciate the actor’s performance, especially during his last scenes where he actually made me feel bad for his character because he was so convincingly pathetic. WRH never won me over and I was really relieved when he finally died. I actually thought they gave the actor too many scenes already leading up to his death. Felt like a lot of unnecessary filler to stretch out the episodes.

Xue Yang is absolutely evil and horrible and psychotic and a total mass murderer and villain, but dammit, as soon as he showed up, I couldn’t help but immediately take a liking to him, and it’s all the actor’s fault. I have never seen Wang Haoxuan in any other show before...then again, I think he’s only been in two other shows prior to The Untamed, both of which I haven’t watched...but much like with Xiao Zhan and Wang Yibo, I think the show struck gold by casting him as Xue Yang. In addition to making his character difficult to hate, he has also made him so interesting and magnetic that I couldn’t wait to see him pop up again. I am so glad that Team CQL altered the Yi City arc so that we were introduced to Xue Yang, Xiao Xingchen and Song Lan sooner than in the novel. Not only did it allow us to become acquainted with the characters early on so that by the time Yi City rolled around, everything that happened in that arc would be even more emotionally effective because we were already invested in them, but we also got Xue Yang sooner and more often, and for that I am thankful. I already liked him before I read the novel so by the time I came across his character in the book, all I could imagine was Wang Haoxuan. He completely fit the image of Xue Yang for me. I don’t know if I would feel the same way had I read the novel first before watching the show, but I would probably still like Wang Haoxuan’s portrayal. I know there have been criticisms that he is overacting, but for me, everything he did worked. It worked so much that I wish things had been different with his character, that Xue Yang wasn’t the monster that he is and committed all those atrocities that he did. I mean, he’s literally worse than Charles Manson. And yet, I still like him; I can’t help it, he’s just so much fun to watch. His eyes freaking sparkles. How am I supposed to resist that?? Look, there are times in a person’s life where one must make certain decisions that are undoubtedly not wise ones, but one still must stick with them because that’s the choice that was made. Liking Xue Yang is definitely one of those decisions for me and I’ll just have to live with it.

**I didn’t want to put this right at top since they would be unavoidable spoilers, but Shijie, Wen Qing and Wen Ning never attended the studies at Cloud Recesses. I’m really happy for that change in the drama, especially since we got to know Shijie more. As mentioned above, the early introduction of Xue Yang and the yin metals was also a deviation from the novel.

Questions TBD:

I had questions regarding the whole yin metal drama, but I have a feeling it’s only because I wasn’t paying close enough attention to that part of the story every time I watched these earlier episodes. I tend to zone out when we dropped in on WRH because I just find him so ridiculous and his whole set up in his fortress ridiculous too. Those zombie/ghost puppet dudes are just silly and I think it's kind of hilarious that WRH would just have his precious yin metal floating in the main hall like that for everyone to see. He has a cool throne, I’ll give him that, but otherwise, I really just can’t with him. On this rewatch this time around though, I am going to really force myself to pay closer attention to WRH and yin metal stuff so that I can finally make sense of it all, or at least know for sure that it was never meant to make sense because they actually botched that whole storyline.

the untamed ep 35, aka: what is a hand but an instrument of the body? what is sex but a duet of the flesh?

i can’t handle all the wangxian in this episode. i cannot. as a refresher for everyone, this is the episode in which:

we watch wwx watch lwj bathed in moonlight on a bridge. i was trying to remember the word to describe the look in wwx’s eyes as he gazes upon this sight, and it turns out the word is literally “moony.” COINCIDENCE?? (probably, since this show is not in english, but shhh.) this scene is all about that gaze baby...like of course we as the audience can also see lwj looking ethereal and beautiful, but it’s not about him, it’s about how wwx feels about him, and how wwx feels about him is that lwj literally hung the moon. you guys. you GUYS

lwj is crushed because wwx doesn’t remember offering to carry lwj on his back. think about how much lwj must have thought of that over the years. think of how heartbreaking it must be to hear that it wasn’t important enough for wwx to remember. think of how much it must hurt when wwx acts like he would never make or accept such an offer because it’s so embarrassing. i mean. ouch

lwj tries to fix wwx’s leg and wwx won’t let him. wei ying! just let him touch you goddammit! he’s trying to show his affection! he wants to take care of you and be close to you!!

lwj fixes wwx’s flute and then they have THE most sensual duet of all time. VERY intense eye contact. the SMIRK. close-ups on hands. close-ups on lips. i can’t remember who said this (sorry) but i read somewhere that this was their equivalent of a sex scene and yes. that’s what’s happening. hands and lips. moving in sync. harmony. building intensity followed by content satisfaction. the only way this could be more symbolic would be if wwx were playing a xiao instead of a dizi, if you know what i mean

wwx says he’s mostly fixed his leg and lwj wants to know what the fuck that means (understandably, it’s a weird thing to say wei ying) and wwx is like “oh should i show you? you wanna see me ~naked~ lan zhan?” wow how much do u just want lwj to call his bluff there cuz i...would love to see that interaction ngl

i spent this entire episode thinking lwj was about to get sauced and i was so excited. any time wwx had some alcohol i was like IT’S HAPPENING but it did not happen :(

nothing happens until the very end when lwj just throws back a shot outta nowhere! what a cliffhanger! how thrilling!! thank goodness there was still time left in the day and i could just go straight into the next episode, which brings us to...

oh my god this is definitely my favorite episode, this is 100% going in the rotation of things to rewatch when i’m very sad

#i originally had 34 in this post too but i didn't have as much to say about it #it's the episode where wwx keeps being confronted with his fear of dogs #he runs away from fairy in the street and lwj swoops in to rescue him #he tells lwj about his childhood and why he's afraid of dogs #jc is convinced it's him bc he's afraid of fairy and i can't decide if it's better if #jc has never met anyone else who's afraid of dogs so he thinks wwx is the only one in the entire world #or jc knows there are many people like this but he just assumes every time he meets one of them that they're wwx #either way it's annoying that he just happens to be right this one time #aw and jin ling is cute in this. so full of bluster and so pissy and yet the first thing he does when alone with wwx is set him free #and then wwx transfers jin ling's curse to himself because of COURSE he does #oh also wwx uses bichen to dig in some dirt like...bro...that's hella rude...#anyway for a woman who never consumes alcohol i am sure attached to lwj getting drunk and being cute #and i know how to spell chickens but that was a typo in the excitement of the moment and it seemed apt for some reason so i left it #mm back to ignoring the plot in favor of all the character goodness #i think i am actually following along with the various machinations fairly well but we shall see my friends we shall see #the untamed #cql watch #my posts
