Lambing time!

As I've mentioned a time or two before, one of my cousins teaches at an agricultural magnet high school, in the animal science department. Around this time of year, she's very busy because lambs are being born! Here's one right now:

The slimy little guy by the ewe's head is the newborn lamb. Here's another one that is a little further past birth and has been de-slimed by the mother:

So far this year, they have 13 lambs, including at 4 sets of twins and 1 set of triplets. Twins are very common in sheep, but the triplets are a little less common, and require some extra attention. Here are a couple of students checking on the trips:

The lambs are a couple of days old now, so they're getting pretty cute! (Schoolkids' faces obscured because my cousin has her students' permission to post their photos, but I don't want to assume that extends to reposts.)

This small pen is basically the barn's maternity suite; once the newborns are strong enough for rough-and-tumble play with lambs a few days older, the little family will rejoin the rest of the flock in the main area of the barn.

EweTube, the school's lambing-season webcam, gives a bird's-eye view of the whole setup. Here's a screengrab from it right now:

Right now, there are two main areas, the one in the middle of the screen looks like sheep who either aren't lambing any time soon, or aren't lambing at all. The back section, in the upper left of the picture, has the ewes with lambs big enough to "mix." The lambing pens are made out of movable fence panels around the edges of the main pen, so that the ewes have their own space to give birth and bond with their newborns, but can see and communicate with each other the whole time. The front pen has a heat lamp--probably for the triplets; my cousin posted that the smallest and weakest of them was having trouble maintaining body temperature.

i was afraid that my first lambs were going to be born during the christmas blizzard... but i should have known that would have been too easy. everything was frozen then, so solid and easy to tromp through.

now, however? temps dropping into the teens and 20's, but the ground is still 6 inches deep of sloppy mud making it damn near impossible to tromp through safely? yeah. four born today already... with two of those coming after sundown. fucking exhausted

It is spring which means I have gotten sucked into lambing season. Which is when I watch youtube videos of farmers working through one of the busiest, stressful, and rewarding part of the year.
