Everyone stood and raised their glasses as the last stroke of midnight reverberated around the hall.
“Happy New Year!” they all roared, draining their champagne in two or three deep swallows. Some went back to their seats. Others talked to those closest to them, or they went in search of something to eat, or they took to the dance floor, holding their companions close as they swayed to music flowing forth from a grand piano enchanted to play on its own accord. ÍrimĂ« walked around the throng, her empty glass still in hand. She stopped at the bar and made herself comfortable on a high leather stool.
“Another one, Tyelkormo,” she said, setting her glass on the counter. Her voice was clear and sweet. It also came from another place and another time, a visible sign of her long years as a creature who was never mortal. “If you please.”
Tyelkormo grinned from the other side and obliged. “How many times must I ask you to call me Tyelko, ma’am?” he teased, selecting a bottle from a tub made of crystal and filled with ice.
“One more time, Tyelkormo, as always,” ÍrimĂ« advised, her crimson lips curling up at the corners. She watched while the bottle was carefully popped, and a measure of its contents was poured out for her. “Will you not join the others?”
“Later,” Tyelkormo said, pouring another full measure of champagne, “when the good Madame brings on the special entertainment some of us have been waiting for all evening.” He pushed the glasses toward her and picked up a small black towel to wipe his hands. It was not necessary for him to do so, but the habit remained with him from the years he walked the earth as a being of living flesh and blood. “The other one is for the big man,” he added. “He appears to be quite busy elsewhere.”
“He most certainly is,” ÍrimĂ« admitted, and accepted the proffered drinks. She lifted her own in a toast and said, rising, “To a new year, Tyelkormo.”
“The same to you, ma’am.”
ÍrimĂ« strode toward the center of the room, occasionally halting to exchange pleasantries with others. Then, she stopped by a table full of rare delicacies, fine wine, and pitchers filled with a thick, red liquid. Her family occupied it. Some of them, at least. She stopped by a chair and leaned down to whisper to a tall, regal woman seated next to a well-dressed and otherworldly-looking man.
“Will you and father be going on your hunt soon, mother?”
Indis looked up at her daughter and smiled warmly. “Yes, daughter,” she returned, “but only after I have slipped into something more appropriate for what your father and I have in mind for later. Míriel outdid herself with this dress. It would be such a shame to ruin it even for the sake of a yearly tradition.”
“MĂriel has indeed outdone herself,” ÍrimĂ« agreed, admiring the gown sewn for her mother. Made of sheer silk, it was studded with little diamonds that had been polished and crafted into beads that glittered whenever the one who wore them moved. And, she admitted to herself, her mother looked a vision in it. Her father plainly thought so also. She could see it in the appreciative glances he sent her mother’s direction. “Very well, mother. I will bring your diversion to the gardens at a quarter to the hour. Will that give you enough time to prepare?”
“It will, to be sure,” Indis said. “And please see to it that she has been bathed and dressed. Makar tends to be remiss about such things.”
“Makar will not fail us,” Faeldor answered. He beamed when ÍrimĂ« came over to him and dipped her head to press a kiss to his cheek. “Will you be calling on him now, daughter?”
“I will, father,” ÍrimĂ« said, drawing his attention to what she carried. “He will be wanting his libation after he is finished with his bedmate.”
Indis arched an elegant brow, her eyes alight with barely disguised amusement. “Just his bedmate, daughter mine?”
Her daughter flushed. Presently, she said, “Perhaps his bedmate will be more than his alone, mother,” she admitted. “Now pray excuse me. I cannot stay too long.”
ÍrimĂ« turned to leave after her mother and father said their farewells. She shouted encouragement to her brothers and sister as they downed yet another serving of vivid green absinthe. NolofinwĂ«, Findis, and ArafinwĂ« were occupied in a game of drink with a few of the ÞerindĂ« brothers and Gothmog and NĂĄri, the guards who protected Melkor and Mairon, the wealthy proprietors of the hotel they all called home. They called back their thanks before turning their attention to the game at hand, paying no heed to the screams spilling out of a little cage in another corner of the room, its walls stained with spatters of blood that would disappear soon.
ÍrimĂ« peered into it and observed the two mortals shackled to a table wide enough for two. They thrashed about and shrieked while two men, both with flame-red hair and both identical to each other, cut into their limbs with uncommon precision. Two others, one with hair like spilled ink and the other with hair that oft reminded her of molten gold, watched on approvingly while offering advice now and then. ÍrimĂ« sniffed at the air as she walked past and made a face. Besides the throw-up and the waste, she smelled opioids, foul and poor in quality, tainting the blood, making it vile and near impossible to savor.
Such a pity, she told herself. Still, she did not let the waste of such blood trouble her as she neared the elevators. A far better offering awaited her a floor above.
Suddenly, an elevator door opened, making her pause. A tall woman dressed all in black and flanked by others in hooded cloaks walked out.
“They are waiting for you all, Madame Ungoliant,” ÍrimĂ« said, chuckling. “Some more than others.”
Madame Ungoliant laughed. “I have no doubt Tyelkormo is one of those others. Come, everyone. Let us not keep our customers waiting.”
ÍrimĂ« did not linger. She entered the same elevator and pushed a button with just her thought. After several seconds of being confined to a stainless steel box, she set foot onto a dimly lit corridor when its doors slid open. A man was seated comfortably on a nearby sofa, smoking, and three dogs rested on either side of him. The beasts took no notice of her; they were content to sleep beside their master.
“Where is he, Lungorthin?” she asked.
Lungorthin took a drag of his cigarette. “Where he always is, princess, when he finds someone to toy with,” he said, but with affection. “Go on. He’s expecting you.”
ÍrimĂ« crossed to a door at the far end of the corridor. When it swung to the other side, exposing a large but sparsely decorated room, she found herself being greeted by the sounds of deep grunts, muffled sobs, and skin slapping against skin. The grunts roused her. The muffled sobs even more so.
“My mother and father will depart soon to prepare for their hunt, dearest,” she said, taking in the sight of the large and powerful man kneeling on the bed and taking a raven-haired woman from behind. It was her cries that were muffled. Her hands were bound behind her back, and her head was driven into the pillows each time her attacker drew back his hips and pushed back in. ÍrimĂ« felt no pity for her, only hunger. Her blood smelled intoxicating. “Is her friend ready?”
Makar ceased thrusting and brushed back the hair that had fallen over his eyes. “She’s ready as she will ever be, darling,” he panted, gesturing to the window seat to his right. Another young woman, a friend and traveling companion of the first one, had been placed on it, gagged and with her wrists and legs bound, to stop her from running. She had been bathed and dressed as if she was about to leave for a party. Tears shimmered in her eyes. “Would you like a taste of my one?”
“Upon my return,” ÍrimĂ« said. She strode in and pressed one glass into Makar’s outstretched hand. Her own, she emptied and set on the bedside table. “And I will not be gone for too long. This one smells so delectable it is almost painful.”
She sat on the edge of the bed, her icy blue eyes never leaving his unusual crimson ones. Makar growled when she pulled down the bound woman’s gag, lifted her head, dipped her own, and kissed her on the mouth.
“Help me,” the woman whimpered when she drew back. “Please, help me.”
“Now, why should I do that?” ÍrimĂ« parted her lips into a cruel and twisted smile, revealing fangs that shone a pearly white in the light and making the woman quail in fright. She looked at Makar. “Can you wait for me, dearest?”
“I can,” Makar promised, pulling away. He got out of bed, his chest heaving from exertion, to relish his champagne. “Best take the other one and go. Your parents won’t like to wait to begin their hunt.”
“Aye.” ÍrimĂ« pulled up the gag to silence the captive of her companion and rose. She strode to the window and bent to throw the other woman over her shoulder. Lifting her was no more troubling than lifting a feather. “Struggling is futile, pretty little mortal,” she hissed when her prisoner writhed in a vain attempt to escape her grasp. “And it will not save you from my mother and father.”
No one stopped her along the way. Then again, no one could after she used the stairs to go to the hotel grounds. ÍrimĂ« merrily hummed a song few others had heard, her voice echoing into the silence as she picked her way down steep steps, through a brightly lit porch, and over a paved path leading to a beautiful garden. She felt no weariness. Only the anticipation of what lay ahead.
“Do not make it harder than it already is for yourself.” ÍrimĂ« carefully dropped her captive onto the moonlit grass and set herself to the task of removing the bindings around her hands and feet, the gag around her mouth. “Do not yell, and do not try and plead for mercy. Do not try to attack my mother. You will only fail, and you will enrage my father. He will make the last hours left to you hell on earth; I give you my word on this.”
The other woman struggled to stand. She whirled around when she heard branches snapping in the trees around her. It was just an animal, ÍrimĂ« knew, moving from branch to branch to reach its home in a nearby tree.
“Run,” she commanded. Her mother and father were near. She could smell their scent on the wind. “Run like the devil himself is after you.”
The woman ran, tripping over herself more than once while she did. She did not notice the two figures chasing after her. ÍrimĂ« knew there was nothing she could do to save herself if she did.

The Web of Middle-Earth

by HandAssassinSpiderman_2112
Thousands of years ago during the First Age, Morgoth, Once Mightiest of the Valar and the dreaded Ungoliant, Weaver of Unlight, entered an Unholy Alliance which in turn led to the creation of a being that Morgoth sought to use to destroy the Valar, the Elves, and all who dared to challenge him... but Ungoliant's hunger and Morgoth's deceit prevented such a calamity from unfolding. Now their son must choose whether to side with the Free Peoples of Middle-Earth after all he has wrought and upon him, after everything he has had taken from him, against the return of Sauron... or usurp his father's lieutenant and claim Arda for himself.

Calling this chapter angsty would be the understatement of the century. I don’t know if calling it horror is an overstatement, but it’s closer to that.
Oh, also, Maitimo makes a super dramatic reentrance into Findekáno’s life.

Outtakes from the Finwean Family Tree
Lalwen, Findis and Argon are the most well known though they didn’t make it into the published silm, they’re from the shibboleth version which was oneof the last docuents written, and of course all the 2nd age characters being shuffled all around the family tree
the only one for whom one backstory version was definitely picked is Celebrimbor since the ‘descendant of Feanor’ explanation for him made it into LotR
At some point Tolkien also considered a 3rd sister named Faniel, or no sisters but a fourth brother named Finrun, with a meaning like ‘doomed’ noted to it. Perhaps that was supposed to go like the one version where Finarfin was supposed to die in trying to stop the fighting. Ultimately though he went with making Finarfin the youngest and I think that’s the best choice because of the irony that the baby of the family is the most reasonable and also winds up on the throne
Finduillas had an older brother named Halmir who was horribly killed by orcs (this actually made into the Annals of Beleriand but was then struck out) I actually like this version because of the angle it adds to Orodreth’s and Finduillas’ relationship with Turin, plus the verse version left a strong impression on me because of the detailed descriptions of Nargothrond and how Orodreth is just so Doneℱ in it (though the prose version makes it sound very much like she was supposed to have zero brothers at the time it was written; There are even some drafts where she has two brothers)
Feanor once had some unspecified family member named Daurin who died after pulling a fight with Ungoliant. That was before Feanor was related to the royals and when his sons were still one-note villains who do little more than just show up and kill Dior, but I’ve seen some fics that integrate this into the final canon, usually making him Miriel’s brother just ‘cause it’s interesting to give her some other relatives.
There was even a version where the Feanorians would have been related to Eol somehoe, though that was before the idea emerged to make him one of the moriquendi. But of course it could always be that they had some relative who didn’t go on the journey - especially in the version where Eol is a Tatyarin Avar.
Fingon was also supposed to have a daughter named Erin in a lot of the drafts of the family tree - it was only the last one where he had no kids & Orodreth was Gil-Galad’s father, who knows, there might have been yet other changes & revisions if the prof had had more time. If you wanted her to exist she can’t have outlived her brother since there was no one left to take the crown after he died. Perhaps she also perished in the battle of the last Alliance, that would make for a nice symmetry with how Elendil and his older son were also torched with Isildur & Elrond as the only survivors of their respective branches.

Hello! Local gremlin here to ask: who was your favorite Silm character and who was your least favorite?
Hiiiii! <3
This is SUCH a DIFFICULT question because I have an enormous proportion to love every single character of a book even John, the rock the main hero walked on page 45 chapter 2.
BUT I will try to take a decision – spoilers: I failed
For the favorite character, well. They’re a lot. I once argued with my sister about that question and it was a total mess.
Because you know there are these characters who committed unforgivable crimes and yet, you CAN’T dislike them *cough* the FĂ«anorians *cough* (but also people like Maeglin because he was a baby ok, he did nothing wrong)
There are these characters who are cuties and you want to hug them and tell them everything will be ok: Finrod, Celebrimbor, Beleg, TĂșrin, Glorfindel, SO MANY.
The dear forgotten ones Tolkien once mentioned and then
oops: Argon, best example of this category (also a cutie you want to hug). But I also think about the Vanyar because
you barely hear about them? Ingwion who?
The badass Womenℱ because they cool: LĂșthien, Galadriel, Nerdanel, Idril, Haleth, Lalwen

For some reason I also happen to have a HUGE love for Círdan. Like, he stayed there with his people, had a good relationship with Ulmo, helped the Noldor even if they murdered his kin across the sea, fought, resisted, accepted to parent Gil Galad in the middle of this mess, continued to help people, accepted a ring of power, fought AGAIN, and again against Angmar, welcomed the Istari with a great smile and a cookie, had the intelligence to give his ring to Gandalf, prepared a boat for him

A cutie. That’s why I will declare that Círdan is my favorite character.
I rambled way too much.
About my least favorite
 Uh, difficult too.
Because there are these characters who ARE the bad guysℱ, like Morgoth, Ungoliant, Gothmog, Sauron, the orcs and goblins and all this guys. Because they hurt your favorite characters, they MEAN.
But there are also these ones who are jerks like Eöl, Ulfang, Saeros, and who mess up in this one chapter and you hate them at this PRECISE MOMENT (Celegorm and Curufin why hurting Finrod WHY)
And then I read posts about a possible redemption and a possible backstory explaining their crimes and I feel emotional and suddenly I don’t hate them anymore.
That’s it, that’s the problem. I am the problem.
Tumblr media
Thank you for asking!! <3 Have a wonderful day!

If Supernatural Can Get Fifteen Seasons, The Silmarillion Can Get Fifteen Seasons: An Overview
I’m going to be going into much more detail in individual season-specific posts, but for the moment, here is the extremely condensed look at what each of these seasons would entail plotwise. I’ve included a cut for length; I hope this translates to mobile well. I’ve followed chronology more or less as closely as I can, adding additional time in places where I thought it made sense or moving events closer together for thematic resonance, and I’ve included Russingon because I’m me and of course I did.
The idea is that this is a 2D animated series rated TV-MA (comparable to R for feature films in the US, or any of HBO’s shows) with fifteen seasons, 26 hourlong episodes each.
Season 1: Valinor, and the unrest between the houses of the Noldor, interwoven with stories about the beginning of the universe/the Great Journey from Cuiviénen/etc. Establishes our core Valinorean cast, and hints at Thingol being a presence later. Main storyline involves Finwëan Family Drama, with bonus Melkor Fucking Shit Up. We meet Maglor's secret wife Aeriel, Curufin's known wife Annamírë + his son Celebrimbor, and become aware of Fingon and Maedhros's love affair. The Sword Incident and Fëanor's banishment to Formenos are featured. The audience knows Melkor is plotting something but doesn't know what. Series finale is the Darkening of Valinor - like, the last thing the audience sees before the series ends is the elves' festival in Tirion and then everything goes dark. Roll credits.
Season 2: Cold open on Maedhros and Maglor and Celegorm finding Finwë's body + realizing the Silmarils are gone. Flashback to Melkor's plans, and we see the Darkening from his perspective. He flees across the ocean and Ungoliant vanishes. Cover the drama between Fingolfin and Fëanor over the crown, Lalwen and Findis and Finarfin rallying around their brother, etc. Maedhros and Fingon marry. Fëanor convinces nearly all of of his loyalists to leave specifically to avenge his personal losses, Fingolfin has a larger amount of people who want to go East to fight Morgoth. Set up a conflict between Fingolfin and Fëanor here - Fingolfin does actually want to defend the elves still living in Arda proper and the soon-to-come Men from Morgoth's influence, while Fëanor is raving about how I Will Not Be Replaced. (This is not strictly canonical, but it is a good contrast of their leadership styles, and it widens the gap between them/adds another reason why Fëanor would perceive Fingolfin as a threat.) Kinslaying at Alqualondë, Finarfin and his people noping out, Fëanor seeming to forgive/make nice with Fingolfin after his people joined in the fight for the ships. He offers to sail East first, with the justification that if there is danger there he'll be the first to encounter it. Maedhros is reluctantly parted from Fingon. Maglor reveals to Amrod that he was married, and his wife died in the battle. They arrive at Losgar, empty out the boats, and make camp for the night. Amrod goes back onboard the ship to sleep. Maedhros wakes up early, finds his father awake, and asks if he can take the boats back West to pick up Fingon et al. Fëanor loses his shit and starts rousing everyone for the shipburning. Maedhros asks him not to, and reveals his marriage, and Fëanor's response is to throw the first torch. Amrod dies, and none of his brothers can get to him. Fingolfin's host sees the flames from across the ocean, and turn towards the north and the Ice. End season.
Season 3: The host moves inland to Mithrim and begins to set up camp. They've met some Sindar by now, and they carry word back to Doriath that FinwĂ«'s son and grandchildren have come back to Arda. Thingol tells LĂșthien, who is just past her majority into adulthood, a part of his life story that she hasn't heard yet: that FinwĂ« was his best friend, and that he'd been on his way to see FinwĂ« when he was sidetracked by Melian. He decides to let FĂ«anor and his host stay in Mithrim in memory of that friendship. Dagor-nin-Giliath happens, FĂ«anor dies at the end of the second episode. Episode 3 deals with Maedhros being hastily crowned, and receiving word from Morgoth that he'll parlay for a Silmaril, and him riding out despite his brothers' suspicions. He's taken captive, end episode. Episode 4 is after a 58-solar-year timeskip, revealing the fate of Fingolfin's host on the Ice. We open on a dream of ElenwĂ« drowning by Turgon; he wakes to reassure himself that Idril is all right and then everyone continues on. The whole episode is taken up by the Ice and the Battle of the Lammoth, ending with Argon's death and the rising of the Sun. Next episode starts with the elves but cuts over to humanity, newly awakened in HildĂłrien - this is a hint of what’s to come. Fingolfin's host challenges Morgoth and goes unanswered, and then return to Mithrim and settle on the opposite side of the lake from the FĂ«anorians, who are doing SUBSTANTIALLY better bc they stole a lot from their fellow Noldor and they also don't treat the land they're living on like Thingol's, vs Fingolfin who refuses to do anything except the bare minimum his people need to survive until they get Permission. Basically the rest of this season is some of the events of Blessed Hands, with Maedhros's rescue and recovery and ensuing family drama. Five solar years pass, and the season ends with him and Fingon riding up to the outskirts of the FĂ«anorian encampment.
Season 4: Season opens with Maedhros being reunited with his brothers and opening formal negotiations for an apology to Fingolfin. Thingol opens formal negotiations with Maedhros and Fingolfin, but neither one reveal to him why they've come to Beleriand/the circumstances surrounding their departure. Fingolfin wants to speak to Thingol personally, and Maedhros defers to him. Permission is granted for the Noldor to settle in the north of Beleriand. A council meeting is held to settle the matter of the High Kingship; Fingolfin is elected and Maedhros votes for him, angering his brothers. He offers to take up residence in the northeastern mountains near Angband, and Fingolfin grants him and his House lordship of that region. The FĂ«anorian host begins to depart, but postpones their journey for the Mereth Aderthad. Beleg, Daeron, Mablung, and a few other Sindarin elves attend the feast. Orodreth meets his future wife. Last half of the season covers 40 years - Turgon and Finrod have their visions, the Noldor begin to construct multiple settlements, and attack Morgoth with renewed strength. Season ends with the triumph of the Dagor Aglareb and the departure of Turgon from Nevrast with his host.
Season 5: Season opens in Doriath, with Galadriel having taken up residence there. Brief summation of the beginning of the Siege of Angband. Angrod pisses off Thingol and causes the Ban on Quenya, and news of this is carried to Himring, Nargothrond, and Gondolin, giving us a sense of their status/construction. Caranthir meets the Dwarves of the Blue Mountains and strikes up a friendship/partnership with them. Fingon visits Himring once it's finished. Gondolin and Nargothrond are completed. Orcs attack Hithlum by coming up the Lammoth but are turned back. Maedhros, Caranthir, Maglor, and Celegorm go to Barad Eithel for the bicentennial of the Mereth Aderthad. Tension here is primarily political/slice-of-life - it's peaceful, even if it's a watchful peace, and it seems like Morgoth is pretty effectively held at bay. The only exception is Aredhel, who grows dissatisfied with Gondolin and finally leaves after a massive fight with Turgon about everything from his family loyalty to his politics to his taste in clothing. Young Glaurung is turned back easily by Fingon and a few other soldiers. Season ends with Finrod getting separated from the sons of FĂ«anor while on a hunt and encountering Men in the woods, changing everything.
Season 6: Speedrun Part Two! This is the Season of Men and Politics, covering 145 years. We see the Edain choose to integrate into Noldorin society, with all the lumps and bumps this causes, and how they respond to the elves around them. BĂ«or, Marach, Haldad, Haleth, Haldar, Malach, Zimrahin, Hador, Adanel, Bereg, Amlach, and Andreth all become important characters. The Green-elves can't stand Men bc they're insufferable vegans, the Sindar are isolationist and suspicious save for a few of their Marchwardens/soldiers, and the Noldor are eager to make new friends. Focus is given to the tensions between the different Edainic groups and philosophies, and how different Houses and clans interact with elves and dwarves. There's not a lot of certainty that the decision to stay was the right one, and different voices have different opinions. All this tension culminates in two things: the council meeting that ends with Bereg leaving Beleriand along with a thousand followers, and the Haladin being trapped behind the Gelion-Ascar Stockade and saved by Caranthir and his forces before going to Brethil. The resolution of this season-long arc is the Edain essentially deciding that if they're going to stay, they'll stay on their own terms, and each House decides what that means. Andreth and Aegnor meet and fall in love. The Athrabeth gets an entire episode. Elvish character drama that isn't about interacting with Men is kept to a minimum except for Aredhel's arc - this is the season where she loses her guards, gets stuck in Nan Elmoth, and encounters Eöl. He's dark and creepy and mysterious and she's at once afraid of him and kind of enamored by his difference from everything she's known, but he quickly turns awful. Huor, Morwen, RĂan, Emeldir, Barahir, and HĂșrin are introduced. Maeglin is born, and grows up, and he and Aredhel escape Nan Elmoth and make a run for Gondolin with Eöl following. The Bragollach and Aredhel's death make up the season finale.
Season 7: Season opens with Fingon's coronation, Maedhros crashing said coronation, baby Gil-galad being sent to Fingon to be his ward and then sent away to CĂrdan on the coast, and the revelation that Sauron has taken Tol Sirion and Dorthonion has fallen. Flashbacks to various parts of the Bragollach: Celegorm, Curufin, and Celebrimbor saving Orodreth from Sauron's forces and fleeing to Nargothrond/Emeldir fleeing over the mountains to Brethil with the BĂ«orian civilians while Barahir and Beren and what's left of the fighters remain/Huor and HĂșrin being taken to Gondolin. Maedhros begins plans for Revenge, Fingon starts leveling austerity measures against the nobility to finance refugee relief, Gondolin mourns Aredhel and doesn't know what to do with Maeglin, and Nargothrond adjusts to having C&C around. Barahir tells Beren about Finrod's oath to always help their family. Sauron tricks Gorlim and slaughters everyone but Beren, who tries and fails to defend Dorthonion and finally flees south and gets lost in the woods of Neldoreth. He meets LĂșthien, falls in love with her, and runs afoul of Thingol, who decides to use him to cause infighting in FinwĂ«'s descendants. Quest for the Silmaril, with all that entails, meanwhile Fingon struggles with High Kingship and Maedhros makes alliances with the Easterlings and the Dwarves of Belegost. Plenty of time is given to Beren and LĂșthien and the Hunt for Carcharoth, with the season finale being their marriage after they return to life.
Season 8: Season opens with Huor and HĂșrin leaving Gondolin and returning home just in time for battle plans to really start ramping up. If everyone's attacking Angband, no one's attacking Doriath, and if Morgoth is defeated, maybe two Silmarils are really all we need, or so we hope. This is an entire season dedicated to loose ends - Thingol's refusal to join the Union, Orodreth assuming lordship of Nargothrond, Gondolin drama, etc. Morwen and HĂșrin marry and have TĂșrin and Urwen. Huor and RĂan court and fall in love and marry, and RĂan gets pregnant. Beren and LĂșthien sneak away from Ossiriand with an infant Dior to visit Beren's family and are present for the wedding. There are little skirmishes, and some suspicions of treachery among the Easterlings that get shut down both by BĂłr's steadfastness and Fingon insisting that everyone's allied here and due complete respect. A plague hits Estolad, with Urwen dying, and HĂșrin trying to convince Morwen to send TĂșrin to Doriath since he's now blood kindred to the King. Morwen refuses, and discovers she's pregnant again as HĂșrin marches off to war. The Nirnaeth is a three-part season finale, with Tuor's birth juxtaposed against Huor's death.
Season 9: The Children of HĂșrin/Fall of Gondolin Extravaganza, Part One. TĂșrin is sent away to Doriath, grows up there, spends time on the marches, falls in love with Beleg and marries him in elvish fashion, and then finally snaps because he can't deal with Menegroth's racist bullshit anymore. Tuor, raised by elves, is finally captured and enslaved. Saeros dies. TĂșrin leaves Doriath to become an outlaw. Tuor survives as a thrall for years. Morwen and Nienor flee to Doriath, Gwindor escapes Angband and makes his way south towards Nargothrond, Beleg is killed by TĂșrin, and Tuor finally escapes thralldom. Tuor arrives at Nevrast and TĂșrin arrives at Nargothrond in the same episode. Ulmo appears to Tuor, and TĂșrin discovers from Gwindor that HĂșrin and his entire line have been cursed by Morgoth. Contrast TĂșrin's desire for action now with Tuor's somewhat careless wandering. Tuor meets VoronwĂ« and they make for Gondolin. Glaurung attacks Nargothrond, and it falls. TĂșrin escapes into the wilderness and crosses paths with his cousin. Nienor loses her memory and is found by the men of Brethil in the same episode that Tuor comes to Gondolin. End season.
Season 10: CoH/TFOG, Part Two. TĂșrin goes home and finds his mother and sister gone and makes a mess of things but manages to escape. Tuor tries to tell Turgon to leave and can't convince him, and decides to remain in Gondolin. Tuor and Idril/TĂșrin and Nienor/Dior and Nimloth meet and fall in love, with this arc culminating in them all marrying in the same episode with the last scene cutting between the three ceremonies. Glaurung returns. TĂșrin kills him, Nienor gets her memory back, they die. ElurĂ©d and ElurĂn born. Wanderings of HĂșrin, including the curse on Gondolin for not letting him in. The Nauglamir comes to Doriath, and with it the first echoes of doom. Season ends with HĂșrin and Morwen reuniting and their deaths.
Season 11: TFOG Part Three. Thingol gets nerfed by dwarves. Mablung dies. Battle of the Thousand Caves, Battle of Sarn Gebir, where Beren takes the Silmaril back from the dwarves and sends it to Doriath again. Melian departs for Valinor. Dior crowned King of Doriath. Elwing born. The FĂ«anorians attack Doriath in the Second Kinslaying but Elwing escapes with the Silmaril and makes it to the Havens of Sirion. Maeglin caught by Morgoth and tortured. Maedhros learns Elwing has the Silmaril but forswears the Oath. The actual Fall of Gondolin is a six-part season finale.
Season 12: Season opens with Maedhros futilely sending letters to Elwing pleading for her to relinquish the Silmaril. She refuses, being in her mid-teens now. Most of this season, the FĂ«anorians are a distant threat; the majority of the story is EĂ€rendil and Elwing falling in love and assuming leadership of the Havens. Gil-galad becomes High King of the Noldor. CĂrdan starts advocating for asking for help from the West. Celebrimbor escaped Nargothrond's fall and is living as a civilian in Sirion. Idril and Tuor sail for Valinor, their fates unknown. Years pass. EĂ€rendil and Elwing marry, and EĂ€rendil resolves to try to go for help once more. An absolutely kickass ship gets built. Elrond and Elros are born. EĂ€rendil sails West. The FĂ«anorians are unable to stave off the Oath any longer and attack the Havens, destroying everything. Elwing, convinced her sons are already murdered and having flashbacks to the disappearance of her brothers, jumps from the cliff with the Silmaril and flies for EĂ€rendil's ship. Elrond and Elros are 'adopted' by Maedhros and Maglor. Season ends with a new star appearing in the sky, and Maedhros and Maglor recognizing it as a Silmaril and wondering what that means.
Season 13: Season opens with Gil-galad and Círdan and what Mannish and Dwarvish refugees they've encountered beginning to consider trying to fight back against Morgoth again, as he's been attacking their last remaining refuges. It's been seven years since Sirion was sacked, and no one's seen Elrond and Elros since their disappearance. A pair of twenty-year-old-by-human-standards twins who look neither elven nor human show up on Gil-galad's doorstep, and Círdan recognizes them as the missing boys. They won't talk about their childhood at all, but they say they're here to help in whatever way they can. Hostilities escalate quickly. Halfway through the season the Vanyar and several reembodied Noldor and Teleri arrive in Beleriand, led by Ingwion and Eönwë and Finarfin. The War of Wrath begins.
Season 14: Just. An entire season of the War of Wrath. It's decades of war there's a lot of shit to do here. The biggest thing is that Elros meets Men for the first time and feels like he's come home, starting at the bottom of their ranks and rising through them meritocracy-style. He meets a woman named Elwen who's essentially a pirate and falls in love with her.
Season 15: The first half of the season is the last bit of the WoW, ending with EĂ€rendil killing Ancalagon and breaking open Thangorodrim. Sauron escapes, Morgoth is cast into the Void. Elrond and Elros make their Choice. CelebrĂan is born, with her naming witnessed by all the reembodied ArafinwĂ«ans. The elves who wish to return to Valinor do so, with some - Gil-galad and Galadriel and Celebrimbor, namely - electing to stay. The Valar reward the Men involved in the war with NĂșmenor, though not all of them choose to go. Those that do elect Elros as their King after the Valar have departed. Loose ends are tied up, the beginnings of Middle-Earth are established, and the series ends on a shot of the setting sun from the point of view of Elros's palace.
More specific examinations of each season are coming. But this is a basic idea of what I’m looking for, this would be my Ultimate Dream Adaptation. I could probably cut it down to eight seasons? Probably. But then I’d lose that precious pacing.

@finweanladiesweek day seven | genderbending | finwë ñoldotåri, high queen of the ñoldor
F I N W Ë it was who accompanied OromĂ« to Aman alongside her sistren ElwĂ« and IngwĂ«, and after led the Ñoldor to the Blessed Realm as the second host of the Eldar. She constructed the city of Tirion, and was crowned Ñ O L D O T Á R I, High Queen of the Ñoldor.
FinwĂ« wed MĂrion and bore their daughter FĂ«anĂĄrĂ«, Spirit of Fire. The creation of such a bright and powerful fĂ«a taxed Finwë’s strength, but with the aid of MĂrion her husband she in time recovered. FĂ«anĂĄrĂ« was raised in a household happy and whole, with two parents who loved her dearly.
In time, Finwë and Mírion welcomed another man into their household: Venno the Fair, kinsman to Queen Ingwë of the Vanyar. Such a triadic relationship was unprecedented among the Eldar, but Finwë loved both her husbands and Mírion and Venno had always been very close.
FinwĂ« bore four more children, not wishing to discern which of her husbands had fathered them, and FĂ«anĂĄrĂ« loved her new siblings with a fierce protectiveness bordering on possessiveness. These were Finvenno and ÑolofinwĂ« and Írimo and ArafinwĂ«, and they adored their oldest sister FĂ«anĂĄrĂ«. FinwĂ« watched her children grow in light and happiness, until Melkor began to sow unrest in Aman.
FĂ«anĂĄrĂ« refused any counsel of the Dark Vala, and her siblings followed her lead; however, FinwĂ« herself was curious to what Melkor offered the Ñoldor. Even as FĂ«anĂĄrĂ« crafted the Silmarils, aided by her seven daughters and her siblings, FinwĂ« worked at the side of Melkor to create new tools unlike any before seen by the Eldar: weapons of steel and iron.
At last Melkor’s evils were revealed when FinwĂ« discovered the Vala’s plan to muster an army and use these weapons to attack TaniquetildĂ«, and when she protested she was slain in Melkor’s rage. With the aid of Ungoliant Melkor destroyed the Two Trees and assailed FĂ«anĂĄrĂ« unto the theft of the Silmarils.
FĂ«anĂĄrĂ« raged against the loss of her beloved mother, and rallying her siblings and her fathers, she marched east in pursuit of Melkor. With the Ñoldor united, the Oath of FĂ«anĂĄrĂ« sworn by all Finwë’s children, and the persuasion of their own Prince EĂ€rvin husband of ArafinwĂ«, the Teleri were persuaded to lend the use of their white ships in aid of their friends the Ñoldor, and the Flight to Middle-earth was motivated not only in the hope of reclaiming the Silmarils, but in avenging the murder of the beloved Queen FinwĂ«.
[notes on name changes below the cut]
Notes on name changes:
FinwĂ« is technically a gender-neutral name; wĂ« is usually glossed as “man” but as in the example of ElenwĂ« it technically means only “person.” Thus, FinwĂ« and names derivative of FinwĂ« remain the same, as do the names ElwĂ« and IngwĂ«.
Míriel (jewel-daughter) becomes Mírion (jewel-son); iel → ion
Indis (wife; bride) becomes Venno (husband; groom). Findis thus also becomes Finvenno; it was nice that FinwĂ« and Indis shared some letters that easily formed a name meaning “hair bride” but now that combination of names isn’t quite as poetic, though it retains its basic structure and meaning.
ÍrimĂ« becomes Írimo and FĂ«anĂĄro becomes FĂ«anĂĄrĂ«; Ă« vs. o is simply an indication of gender.
EĂ€rwen becomes EĂ€rvin; wen comes from wendĂ« (maiden) and the masculine equivalent would be vindĂ« (youth). Likewise, though I didn’t mention it, LalwendĂ«/Lalwen would become LalvindĂ«/Lalvin.
I’m not sure if I’m swapping genders for the Valar in the AU
I just didn’t refer to Melkor with any gendered pronouns. While this is fun to think about, I don’t really want to expand this much further. To be honest, after this point, it comes to resemble the Good King FĂ«anor AU @thishazeleyeddemon and I created in terms of a broad outline
though with details changed, certainly.
The main difference from this AU/that AU and canon is that Fëanårë loves her siblings fiercely, and the Noldor are much more united (though the reasons are different between the AUs). Changing Finwë to a woman (and not!! killing her in childbirth basically!!) really does affect the rest of the Silm
even if I didn’t also genderbend everyone else!

#ok but which five man band roles would they be #leader / lancer / big guy / smart guy / heart
Thank you @tarrevizsla for asking! The answer is: they’re all the Smart Guy (Noldor ¯\_(ツ)_/¯), but also:
FĂ«anor: Leader (2ndary: Smart Guy: invention, engineering, outdoors, wide range of academiaïżœïżœïżœok anything he puts his mind to for long)
Findis: Lancer (2ndary: Smart Guy: academia/research, Ainur and spiritual metaphysics)
Fingolfin: Big Guy (2ndary: Smart Guy: law, politics, logistics)
Lalwen: Heart (2ndary: Smart Guy: politics, logistics, the only person here with genuine self-awareness except maybe Finarfin)
Finarfin: Smart Guy: only person here with common sense and consistent impulse control (2ndary: Heart, because being 2 months younger than FĂ«anor’s oldest son—due to COMPLETE LACK of communication between parents—means yes he’s a Child of FinwĂ«, but he’s also legally A Baby forever)
I know your instinct might be to say Fingolfin is the Lancer but hear me out: if FĂ«anor was nice to Fingolfin for 5 minutes, Fingolfin would follow him into Hell with only mild complaining continuous argument but never actually stopping him, always watching his back and doing his damnest to achieve his goals. I know because this is roughly what happens in canon.
And I headcanon that of the siblings, Findis is most like FĂ«anor in temper, ie, loses it easily and holds to what she furiously, impulsively shouted even when knowing she’s probably wrong. She’s also innately more resistant to FĂ«anor’s Big Protagonist Energy than the rest of her siblings (and most of the general population, including Ainur). In canon, this means she at one point slammed her fork down at a family dinner and snapped, “You know what, fine, I will move permanently to Valimar. I know when I’m not wanted!” and only returned to Tirion for major holidays, if that, for the next, oh, until at least the late Second Age, because honestly? Fuck you all. She’s making her own home. In a happier au, however, maybe it means she’s both the most likely to second-guess FĂ«anor, which he needs, and the best at arguing him out of his worse ideas, because she speaks the same anger language. Not in a “she translates him to calm” way! They just have screaming arguments and sometimes she wins, which is more than can be said for anyone but Nerdanel.
I think there are still faultlines between them, but they’re filled in and built over with real affection, periodic real effort, and metaphorical peerless Noldorin engineering. And FĂ«anor still makes the Silmarils. So Melkor still targets them (plus, the Teleri canonically don’t let him in). The difference is, they realize early on what’s going on and proceed to play him, and set up an ambush in Formenos. Unfortunately, they don’t anticipate Ungoliant! Fortunately, Findis and Finarfin argued adamantly enough that “we cannot expect to defeat a Vala even with the strength of all the Noldor” that they had a backup plan, and by “backup plan” I mean “multiple Valar on call.”
Then they’re all standing there in the starlight (because the Trees were destroyed) but with the Silmarils, and Melkor and Ungoliant escaped but FinwĂ« and everyone else still alive, and Yavanna is like, “Farsighted FĂ«anĂĄro! With the light in your gems, I can still resurrect the Trees.” And FĂ«anor says, “
I will gladly help restore what I can without breaking open my gems, but a) I want to live, and I may have made. Choices. About how much of my personal life force I poured into the making of these. And b) I was not remotely kidding about how you’re clearly overrated as deities and the right and destiny of the Noldor is to return to the land of my father’s birth—with the Silmarils fixed into weapons with which to fight the monster that nearly bit my baby brother in half not twenty minutes ago, which is a much better use for them than relighting Trees whose Light barely extended beyond the Pelori in the first place.”
Finarfin: “I’m 265 and I’ve fathered four—never mind. By the way, I forgot to say what with everything, but EĂ€rwen says the ships for that can be ready any time, but we all have to take refresher courses on how to sail them first.”
Findis: “That’s fine, the time that takes all be about equivalent to the time it takes LalĂ« to pick all her jewels to being and NĂĄro to rig some decent lights to leave behind.”
Lalwen: “Oh, excuse me, Miss Bringing Half a Library”
do you ever look at how stubbornly loyal FĂ«anor’s sons were to him, and to each other ie this was a sibling relationship style he encouraged in his house, and think about how fiercely devoted his own siblings could’ve been to him if only he’d given them half a chance and an ounce of affection—and, given how feral some of them turned out to be, how he probably would’ve liked them just as much in turn. And how a united Five Man Band of the children of FinwĂ« could’ve caused just SO much trouble.

My Years of the Trees timeline
The Tale of Years & other sources don’t give us dates for all the things I would like dates for, so I made a timeline to help me work out when I think things happened.  (if in doubt, always make a timeline).
Lines in bold are from canon (for a broad definition of canon), lines not bold and marked *** were made up by me.

berrysphase replied to your post “valaraukars replied to your post “AU maeglin in mithrim with grandad...”
I'm sideeyeing myself here for sounding so "MY PET THEORY" when my whole point was there's actually a whole bunch of ways to explain Earendil not getting the Kingship and some of them can leave Maeglin the legitimate heir -- lol sorry (Assuming Gil is Orodreth's, that is, I always do too!) I figure the relative Sindarin comfort with powerful women has a lot to do with Melian, but it turns out I could go on and add screenfuls about Elwe's special status
and king's choice etc etc so uh I'll spare you... Also surely this attitude has a lot to do with why Galadriel married a Sinda.
Elves arguing inheritance politics is my catnip but it's also a bit brain-breaking -- I mean here are these immortal beings arguing about different interpretations of inheritance law when inheritance was just invented out of whole cloth so recently, you get to blatant rationalization s and bad philosophical arguments so fast
No no, it certainly can be done but you’re right, I forgot about Earendil during my analysis. Gil as Orodreth has always made sense to me, especially with how small a player he is until after the War of Wrath. God, the Galadriel-Marries-A-Sinda thing is an excellent point. I tend to skim over the more overtly patriarchal crap in the text (and in my fic, unless I’m making a point) but it explains an awful lot about why such an ambitious woman would spend so much time away from the action - she has vastly more of a say in governance etc. in Doriath than she would have in her own peoples’ lands - and of course she’d marry a Sinda, this is great.
God, yes, how did the issue of who would inherit Finwe’s crown break society when the issue was, as far as anyone knew, entirely academic? (because it was really a question of who daddy loved more :()
psychopompious replied to your post “valaraukars replied to your post “AU maeglin in mithrim with grandad...”
"and she's his great aunt" you say that like it would be a problem for him. that's only 4th degree consanguinity, same as first cousins!
also re: Celeborn's relation to Thingol, I think in that version it's through the schrodinger's cat brother (aka Elmo) but I'd have to dig up that lovely chart of Doriath's long line of cousin marriages to check
.......okay fuck, you’re right. Maeglin would.
If that’s the case then I suppose I owe Tolkien an apology. But he’s dead and also we have no idea what happened to Lalwen so I’m just gonna sit on it.
vardasvapors replied to your post “Paying attention to those things is not my forte but thank you for...”
I just wanted to mention that this series of prompted au's is like my fave thing in the fandom rn
Thx xx I just wish I could be more varied with them than ‘but then everyone died anyway’
crocordile replied to your post “valaraukars replied to your post “AU maeglin in mithrim with grandad...”
to be fair though, nothing in canon suggests elwing held a position of authority by herself; you can easily assume her position comes from her marriage :/ Though ofc that is not my interpretation/headcanon at all!
re: earendil's ellegibility for high kingship: on the purely legalist side cirdan and co might just be following finrod's logic and taking finarfin's to be the royal line after fingolfin's death, or something? i always assumed that (but then again i def hc gil as oro's son which not many do hahaha)
You: “I don't think Tolkien meant for us to interpret it this way."
Me, an intellectual w. a folder of Silm erotica: "He didn't mean for us to interpret a lot of things this way. But we did."
I.E. Elwing is queen and idgaf what Tolkien wanted.
I am with you on Gil as Oro’s (AND NOT JUST FOR SHIPPING REASONS OKAY, I HAVE LAYERS), someone pointed out the thematic neatness of the three lines of Finwe’s descendants dying to other elves, to Morgoth, and to Sauron respectively and Gil as an Arafinwean falls neatly into that.
simaethae replied to your post “Paying attention to those things is not my forte but thank you for...”
how about they win a decisive enough victory to reclaim *one* silmaril and then morgoth flips and... volcanoes. or something. anyway you could totally contrive an AU where some of the feanorians, i'm saying C&C for kicks, have to fall back to the safety of Doriath in the ensuing chaos with their newly-obtained silmaril (since after all we know a silmaril can get you through the girdle...)
like i'm sorry this is great but i feel like it just needs more terrible decision making from the noldor to be a silm AU >>;
I’m starting to feel bad for Anon, okay? Just like Mandos, even my cold heart can be moved to pity.
C+C in Doriath would be exquisite tbh, it’s yet another closed system where they can feed on paranoia, claw for power, and Celegorm can get into a creep off with Daeron while Thingol despises them while coveting the jewel and Melian is like ‘for fuck’s sake guys’ but no one listens. At least maybe the dwarves are free of the murder shenanigans this time around!
emilyenrose replied to your post “Paying attention to those things is not my forte but thank you for...”
ok but any au where luthien doesn't dress up as a vampire is a bad end au anyway
Truer words have never been spoken.
vardasvapors replied to your post “Idk if you'll agree or not, but for the au where the silmarils don't...”
this is so wonderfully terrible and perfect, i love the...honesty and simplicity of the things they say, in them talking specifically about their relationship, though the feelings and Maglor's claims about finishing it can map onto much more. Also "I'd like that" JUST KILL ME.
It didn’t kill Mae though, more’s the pity :( Okay but realtalk, thank you <3 I suppose by this point all pretension’s pretty much been stripped away, they’re well past the point where lying to each other or themselves would do any good.
valaraukars replied to your post “Ok I've find that tag .. but you actually read it? You can find it...”
You know who defied the valar? You know who doesn't get any credit? You know who is a character of true depth and nuance, constantly dismissed by an undeserving fandom? Ungoliant
No no Ungoliant, as established, abandoned her children and is a bad mother and thus a bad woman giant spider. Please keep your vile glorification of her off my blog.
imindhowwelayinjune replied to your post “Idk if you'll agree or not, but for the au where the silmarils don't...”
You are maddeningly good at feelings that cut to the bone and somehow have this soupcon of humor - 'I'd like that,' said Maedhros wistfully - that makes the feeling go straight through the bone to the marrow
I left off the hurtful swears cause I know you don’t really mean them. Maedhros wishes feelings really worked so literally :(
