@batmanisagatewaydrug set up a fun Book Bingo for 2025, and want to try and do it!
This planned list of books for me to read is extremely subject to change, especially since I always get a lot of books as holiday presents, but here's the plan as of this moment.
Literary Fiction: The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck. My mother got me a bunch of Steinbeck for my birthday, since I liked Cannery Row, so let's see if I can do now what I couldn't in high school!
Short Story Collection: The Illustrated Man by Ray Bradbury. Another author I don't know super well but who has written at least some things I like.
A Sequel: Sweet Thursday by John Steinbeck. Like I said, my mom got me a bunch of Steinbeck and I like Cannery Row, so I'll try the sequel.
Childhood Favorite: A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court by Mark Twain. I read and loved three quarters of this as a kid- but I had to stop before what I knew would be the grim finish, where Twain's depression took hold. It's time I see it through.
20th Century Speculative Fiction: Anno Dracula by Kim Newman. I've come around on Newman, so I should finally try his Bad End Dracula AU.
Fantasy: Fool by Christopher Moore. I keep seeing this when I shelve things at the library and thinking 'I should get that out sometime' so let's make it sometime!
Published before 1950: Beowulf, translated by Burton Raffel. I loved the children's book Bea Wolf, and it gave me the urge I needed to find a good translation of the original.
Independent Publisher: Under the Pendulum Sun by Jeannette Ng. Gothic? Fairies? Dark historical fiction? Amazing cover? Sounds great.
Graphic Novel: Be Very Afraid of Kanako Inuki by Kanako Inuki. Another great cover that's already making me very afraid!
Animal on the Cover: Earthlings by Sayaka Murata. I loved Convenience Store Woman and this has a cute hedgehog on the cover, and that's all I need to know.
Set in a Country You Have Never Visited: Let the Right One In by John Ajvide Lindqvist. One of the books that's been on my tbr for the longest time, and I loved both film adaptations.
Science Fiction: Finna by Nino Cipri. I'm always down to read about genre-shifting trips through alternate dimensions.
2025 Debut Author: You are Fatally Invited by Ande Pliego. I have a weakness for riffs on And Then There Were None, plus this seems like the kind of book my library will order.
Memoir: The Complete Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi. I started this at someone's house and never finished it, so now is the time.
Read and Make a Zine: Archive.org has a bunch of issues of a Twin Peaks fanzine called Wrapped in Plastic, which I'm looking forward to browsing through! I hope it will give me ideas for what to create!
Essay Collection: The Collected Schizophrenias by Esmé Weijun Wang. Not much to say about this except that it sounds really fascinating.
2024 Award Winner: Chain-Gang All-Stars by Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah. This won the Alex Award (for adult books with good YA crossover appeal) and I've been curious about it since I worked at a bookstore and put in the order.
Nonfiction: The Madman's Library: The Strangest Books, Manuscripts and Other Literary Curiosities from History by Edward Brooke-Hitching. I would indeed like to learn about those books! Because I missed the "learn something new" part, I will read The Feud: the Hatfields & McCoys by Dean King.
Social Justice & Activism: Beyond Survival: Strategies and Stories from the Transformative Justice Movement by Ejeris Dixon and Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha. This has been recommended to me as a good starting point to learn about transformative and restorative justice, something I would like to understand better.
Romance Novel: Duke of Sin by Elizabeth Hoyt. Duke of Desire was great, so I'm eager for some more of that!
Read and Make a Recipe: I'm hoping to find something good from the Moosewood Cookbook, I need to learn more good vegetarian meals.
Horror: Diavola by Jennifer Marie Thorne. More gothics, and as always, I'm late to a book everyone else always loves!
Published in the Aughts: Great Granny Webster by Caroline Blackwood. Another book I always see on the shelves and always mean to get out next time when I'm not in the middle of something!
Historical Fiction: The Keep by F. Paul Wilson. Historical horror (with Jewish characters) is one of my favorite genres.
Bookseller or Librarian Recommendation: Poison Widows: A True Story of Witchcraft, Arsenic, and Murder by George Cooper. This was on the library website of recommended Philadelphia-set books, so I'll happily give it a try.

"Father, what happened to the demon then?" earnest eyes stare back at you, twin eyes reflecting the moonlight that is ever-pervading.
What happened to the demon?
He lives inside you.
The wind howls outside.
Like the jackals that had howled at your birth. Recognizing their kindred, their master.
What fools they were! whispers the blackness inside you. Affection! How weak the human mind is!
You rise up.
Stagger away.
Need to protect the—the children.
Children?
The light in your children's eyes sharpen to rays that hurt your eyes. They smile. Too many teeth. No. Your children. My babies—
The blackness crawls up your throat. Fingers enclose your heart: squeeze. Ancient words, powerful words ghost your nape: a violent intimacy.
You smile.
You are the blackness.
It is more home than any hallowed palace: the darkness that curls next to your heart.
You are me. I am you.
Sacred words. But you and the darkness are not husband and wife; no, not soulmates; but you are one.
The darkness to counter the light. The balance of the scales. Have the die always been cast against you? Has every path, every step you will take already been carved out in history, in prose? What purpose do you have if not to spread your shadow across the world?
Good will always win.
It is a law of the universe.
The futility of it claws at your throat. What use is it? To try, knowing you will lose in the end, no matter what.
But try you stil will.
Every action has an equal and opposite reaction. Also a law of the universe.
Good cannot coexist without Evil. Lakshmi's counterpart is Alakshmi. Dharma's balance is Adharma.
So push you do.
"The demon lives within us all, child," you say, and smile with too many teeth.

Ok I propose a new old idea
The type of voices the Dieties have...
Vishnu: As sweet as honey yet regal as fuck.. like when he speaks even if he speaks things you don't understand you'll feel like “wah kya samjhaya hai”
Shiva: DEEP AF voice but also as soft as the cottons. If you just play music, all his words will automatically feel like lyrics
Brahma: Naturally low toned, calm voice and sounds mature.... Like more than normal typa mature... As if your father have pulled you aside to tell you how he had experienced life.
Varuna: When normal sounds like ocean waves dancing but kinda high pitched... But when angry and he speaks to you, it's as if you are struck in a tsunami or a tornado
Indra: His voice is actually very very sweet and jiggly like the rain... The kind of rain people enjoy listening to. But when angry it's rumbling like thunder, an word is enough to scare the shit out of you
Mitra: Deep voice but it also gives you a sense of home, a feeling you get when someone understands you, someone puts an hand around your shoulder and smiles at you... A feeling of having a friend.
Parvati: Soft sweet voice. The one your mother uses when she's happy with you. If she speaks, you will just want to curl up in a ball and ask for food. You'll feel like a child if she speaks to you. But her ferocious forms speak so different you'll feel like someone is painfully tearing you up into pieces just from words..
Saraswati: She sounds like that one teacher you were sure would clear all your doubts with a calmness you never understand how it was everlasting. She just doesn't know how to speak angrily. Even when she's angry she'll speak in such a manner you'll feel guilty for making her angry (this method is tested and proven on Brahma)
Lakshmi: She just calls you poor in all the existing languages lol.... Ok no but she speaks so regal it sounds like if you pour a ton of coins on the ground. Really. But also you'll just keep wanting to listen to her.
Ganga: Soft like the river flow when she's really really nice. But also wild, unstoppable, and sharp like the cutting sharp streams of the river Ganga.
Vayu: Whispery, windy tone like the air. Softly speaking to make you feel safe and happy. But it also changea according to his mood. Like when he's angry it's storm it gives you no corner to hide, if he's sad it's monsoon wind.. cold and you don't really like ot much..
Surya: His voice is...umm Bright. Like literally. When he speaks it's as if the window was open and the sun rays smacked you across your face waking you up from sleep. But also his voice is warm and gives a feeling of safety.
Chandra: Cold. His voice is cold. But not in a bad ignoring manner cold. It's the cooling effect you get on summer nights, the peace you get when you look at the night sky ans spot the moon. It's soft and melodious and beautiful just like the moon. But if you look closely it got some spots in it. And sometimes his voice cracks... Not because he's in pain or sadness, it's just a natural thing for him.
Varuni: She just sounds drunk. No I mean she definitely speaks normal but also her voice makes YOU drunk. Maybe take it in a romantic way or whatever but it's true (it works, Varuna agrees)
Vasant: Deep voice like the tree trunk but also soft like the flowers he wears around his neck. He makes you remember home, gives you a longing for home, but alao makes you feel at home.
Kama: He speaks to you in a way that makes you feel loved. No not necessarily romantic love but all kinds of love. You just feel loved. Also he used terms like “love” “sweetheart” “dear” in regular conversations so yeah...
Rati: Contrary to popular opinion no she doesn't sound lusty 24/7. Well... Maybe a little... But she actually sounds really sweet and soft like a childhood friend or neighborhood sister
Aranyani: She sounds when gentle breezes blow and makes the forest trees dance, like the animals that makes sound in a forest... Can be scary sometimes but you'll also love listening to her.
Pushan: Like marriages bells, happy wishes, as if a letter came from someone you love. Don't know how to elaborate it but his voice gives a kind of joy, that you get when you know “haa ab life mein sab sahi hoga”
Kartik: Soft but somehow a bit awkward voice... like he's sure what he's speaking of but is he speaking the correct way? But if he's angry its War Cry. He'll tear you apart with words just like his mother.
Ganesh: Sounds like that topper backbencher kid. Knowledged asf but also mischievous but you'll like listening to him thou, it's like having a cousin at a boring family function.
Devsena/Shashthi: She also sounds like a mother but she sounds like she's coddling and pampering you, spoiling you with all kinds of foods and stuffs, she not just sounds like a mom but she'll make you feel like a smol baby too.
Lmao it's long sorry and I know I didn't cover most... Whom should I add next?
*sobs* THIS IS SO BEAUTIFUL.
The way you explained all of these 😭
No words.
Perfect!
Next you can add Shukra, Budh, Ila/Sudyumna, Yama, Agni, Ayyappan, Ashvins, Aryaman, Vac, Dyaus, Alakshmi, Yami, Rudra, Savitr and more if ya want! :D
I LOVE THIS SO MUCH UGHHH
Im so glad with what you did with Indra, Mitra, Vasant and Varuni's voice HSJSKSKDJD SUITS SO WELL

The Story of Solah Shringar
The Indian bride is the epitome of grace, elegance, and beauty. Her attire and traditional Indian bridal jewelry catch every eye and leave a lasting impression on everyone. While her wedding outfit accentuates her best features, her Indian bridal jewelry adds a subtle shine and a touch of sophistication to her entire look.
As per tradition, the Indian bride embellishes herself with 16 adornments on her wedding day. These adornments are called Solah Shringar. This ritual has been practiced since ancient times and is an integral part of bridal preparations.
The story behind the Solah Shringar features Rati, the wife of Kamdev, the Hindu god of love. Rati engaged in severe penance to appease Goddess Lakshmi. She was then blessed with the 16 adornments from Lakshmi and wore them to impress and marry Kamdev.

16 adornments (16 sringar)are
1. Sindoor
The first adornment is Sindoor, also known as kumkum or vermillion. Sindoor holds a special place as it marks the beginning of a woman’s new journey as a bride. Sindoor is applied by the groom on the forehead between the hair partition of the bride. The bride then continues to wear sindoor throughout her married life.
2. Hair care (Kesh Sringar):
We now focus on the ‘Kesh’, or hair. The Indian bride embellishes her hair using fragrant flowers and glittering headpieces. Traditionally, the bride made three braids that represented three holy rivers, Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati, and the trinity of the Hindu gods Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh. The fragrance of flowers keeps the bride fresh throughout the day and her Indian bridal jewelry embellishes her hairdo, adding another layer of elegance and beauty to her overall look.
3. Maangtika
The part of the forehead where the maangtika rests is believed to be the home of Ajna Chakra or the third eye. When the bride wears the piece of Indian bridal jewelry on her special day, she is believed to be connected with her third eye and has the ability to control her emotions and activate her knowledge, wisdom, courage, and willpower.
4. Bindi
The bindi also takes us to the third eye. Bindi comes from the Sanskrit word bindu, which means ‘point’ or ‘dot’. The bindi is closely associated with improving concentration and retaining energy. It is one of the most popular adornments worn by the Indian bride and is known internationally.

5.Kohl or Kajal
From the forehead, we move to the eyes. Kohl, kajal, surma, kanmashi, kaadige, kaatuka, and kan mai are some names for one of the oldest natural beauty products in the world. Kajal accentuates the eyes of the bride and is believed to ward off the evil eye in various cultures. The darkening around the eyes also protects the wearer from the harsh rays of the sun.
Kajal is an essential element of the solah shringar and makes the eyes look more prominent. It is undoubtedly a beautiful way to enhance the natural beauty of the bride.
6 .Karn Phool or Earrings
A wedding day look cannot be completed without a set of dangling earrings. Karn Phool is a Sanskrit term that translates to ‘flower of the ears’ and is an essential part of the solah shringar.
7 .Nath(nose ring)
The nose ring is another beautiful element of the Indian bride’s attire and is a symbol of valor, fertility, and spirituality. The large nose rings hooked onto the hair with a chain take the bride a step closer to creating her ideal look. It is one of the most ethnic elements of Indian bridal jewelry and a wedding day look is surely incomplete without it.
8 .Haar or Necklace
The one thing that brings the whole look together is the necklace. Necklaces are said to represent safety and abundance and are believed to help the wearer control their emotions better. Some necklaces feature specific motifs or gemstones that are believed to bring good luck and ward off evil spirits.

9 .Bajuband
This element of traditional Indian bridal jewelry is worn on the upper arm. The bajuband is believed to keep evil spirits away and protects the wearer. The Indian bride can embellish her wedding outfit with all sorts of armbands that are encrusted with diamonds and other colorful gemstones.
10 .Bangles, Bracelets, Choodiyan
Bangles and the Indian bride are inseparable. They’re a part of traditional Indian bridal jewelry that a woman always wears. It is believed that bangles and bracelets bring health, luck, and prosperity to the wearer and are more than a jewelry item or accessory for the traditional Indian woman. There are various wedding ceremonies related to bangles and bracelets across cultures that show us their significance in Indian culture.
11 .Hathphool and Aarsi
The hathphool is a clever mix of a bangle and a ring. Bringing the best of both together, this element of traditional Indian bridal jewelry embellishes the hand and wrist of the bride. The interesting crossover of the two pieces surely adds more flavor to the wedding day look.
A thumb ring known as Aarsi is also worn by some brides. Aarsi contains a small mirror. This mirror allows the bride to catch a glimpse of the groom since she is covered in a veil and cannot see the groom’s face.
12 . Mehndi
Henna, commonly known as mehndi, is undoubtedly one of the most amusing parts of a traditional Indian wedding. It is believed that mehndi brings good luck and joy to the bride. The darkness of the mehndi represents the strength of the bond between the bride and the groom. The solah shringar of the bride is incomplete without her hands and feet embellished with beautiful mehndi designs that add to her overall wedding day look.

13 . Kamarband (waist band)
The use of the kamarband, or waistband, is scarce in North Indian weddings but it is an important part of a South Indian bride’s trousseau. The piece of Indian bridal jewelry is adorned with gemstones and is used to accentuate the female’s body and keep her bridal saree in place.
14 . Anklets and Toe Rings
Commonly known as payal and bichhu, these elements of traditional Indian bridal jewelry embellish the feet of the bride. Payals can be recognized by the beautiful chime sounds they make whenever the bride walks. Toe rings are seen as a sign of marriage and a bride wears them until the death of her husband.
15 . Itar
Itar is the perfume that a bride applies to freshen her aura and stay fragrant throughout her special day.
16. Wedding Outfit
Finally, the one thing that clubs every element together and brings the bride’s imagination to life is the wedding outfit. The traditional Indian bride wore the classic red wedding outfit but with the evolution of Indian weddings, other colors have started to take center stage as well.

Skin tones
Some of these are based off research, the others are mostly my own headcanons. Wherever required, I shall try to give an explanation. There are some categories here:
"Krishna" tone: aka the dusky one, also called "Saawla rang"
Dark but not that dark: this tone is lighter than the 1st, but still dusky
Wheatish: not fair, not dark
Molten gold: In my terms, this complexion is fair, but with a slightly yellowish/golden tint
Rosy: This shade is fair too, but but has a milky and pinkish shade.
The exceptions: This one is kind of a surprise, idk where to include the ones present in this category
1. Krishna tone: Satyavati, Krishna, Arjun, Draupadi, Pradyumna, Shrutakarma
These ppl are here as they are clearly mentioned to have this skin tone. Sorry if I miss out anyone, do remind me, but these are the only ones who I can recall. Satyavati is probably a shade darker than the others, as one of her names is "Kali". Pradyumna's tone is not specified as per my knowledge, but he is said to look insanely similar to Krishna, so much that ppl mistook him for Krishna, he probably had the same skin tone. Shrutakarma is kinda obvious, both his parents are here, most likely he had the exact tone as them.
2. Dark but not dusky tone: Nakul, Yudhishthira, Kunti, Dhritrashtra, Bhishma, Shakuni, Shrutasena, Sutasoma
IDK, just felt that these ppl would fit. Kunti having a slightly dark tone suits, since Arjun needs to inherit that from somewhere.
3. Wheatish: Sahadeva, Ashwatthama, Drona, Duryodhana, Dushasana, Dhrishtadyumna, Satyaki
I always felt that Dhri must have had a lighter tone than Drau, so I put him here. Dury and Dushy are here because I headcanon them being similar in looks. Sahadeva is here so that Nakul cannot confuse others about their looks-
4. Molten gold: Subhadra, Madri, Gandhari, Duhshala, Vikarna, Amba, Ambika, Ambalika, Rukmini, Shatanika
If you see the statues at Jagannath Puri, Subhadra is colored yellow, so doesn't she suit this tone? IDK how to explain Molten gold and rosy, but it is def not the jaundice/cold type of fair, pls. The rest, idk why I just put them here, except Rukmini, she is Lakshmi, ofc her complexion is "golden".
5. Rosy: Balarama, Prativindhya, Uttara, Iravan
This one is so short, because I just could not think of anymore ppl. Balarama is clearly the fairest of his siblings, every single painting/Jagannath statue has him with white as his skin tone. Just imagine these ppls cheeks turning red just by a tiny pull-
6. The exceptions: Pandu, Karna, Abhimanyu
Ok so, now, for them, I shall be specific. All of these characters are most probably fair, but their complexion does not fit in any given category. Pandu is more yellow than molten gold, due to the jaundice.
Karna, IMO, had a molten gold complexion, but kinda like...the sun? I feel he had brownish hair, and very light skin, as if the sun's rays had hit him, if yk what I am trying to say- He is after all, sun's son.
Abhimanyu's complexion is rather specific: moon-like. WTF exactly is moon-like, is beyond me. Yes, in Sanskrit, it is called "Shashi-varna" or "Chandra-varna". Various ppl have been termed as this, like Ganesha and Krishna, but they are on the opposite sides regarding complexions.
There is a term called "as fair as the moon" used in various romantic literary works. Moon=fair has always been the context, mostly. Chandra Deva himself is always drawn as fair, unlike Shiva, Vishnu etc. I understood, that Abhimanyu had a fair complexion, but with a moon-like glow. So, probably, Karna and Abhimanyu's case is similar, but with context of the sun and moon respectively.
I hope I did not offend anyone, sorry If I did, it was not my intention.

Sigils for Palestine
I am home for the next two weeks because I am recovering from surgery (I'm fine)-- so I just wanted people to know that if they want a sigil request, and they include proof of donation to any of the following charities for Palestine, I will make a sigil for you.
Normal rules for requests and commissions still apply, but if your request is something I won't do, I will work with you to reword or focus it on something that I will do.
CareForGaza:
Pious Projects:
eSims (Note: Crips buys the eSims for you and handles the sending them over, and allows people to donate for less than the amount of a full eSim so that they can purchase bulk options):
Edit: This is not just for the next two weeks, btw. I will continue to do this for as long as there is a need in these charities.
Edit 2: Please email your proof of donation to addaideyn at the usual g of mail *finger guns*

🦋The Princess and the Parselmouth🦋
Chapter 3: Something so tragic about you, something so magic about you
Princess Miradevi did not know what to make of Ominis Gaunt.
He belonged in the wing of the palace where they displayed the artwork, she decided. Right there with the oils and brilliant colors of landscapes and portraits, his features studied down to the atoms by the best painters in the empire.
His classically handsome features carved from marble and moonstone were stunning enough but there was something about him-
Something hidden and tucked away. Nestled in the slight crease against the corner of his lips when he graced her with a smile, sequestered away in the way he swayed slightly when listening to music he loved.
But there was also the heavy look in his eyes so achingly tragic- Icarus falling from the sky, the last golden rays of sunlight condemning him and the rush of the ocean rising to swallow him whole.
Miradevi wanted to draw out each carefully concealed piece of him like a treasure, the likes of which were only found in her family’s vaults.
“You’re staring, your highness.”
Mira startled, her chin slipping off where it rested on the palm of her hand.
Ominis laughed softly, leaning back in his seat. Students were filing into the lecture hall, filling up the seats around them.
“I-“ Mira began, sheepish. “Might have been. I was just trying to… understand something.” She paused for a moment. “You’re an enigma, Ominis Gaunt.”
“Ah, am I? Should I be flattered?”
“Maybe? I’d quite like to know you better, you know.”
Ominis was silent for a moment, his heart- traitorous thing that it was-beating a rapid tattoo against his ribs.
“Why?” The question left his lips before he could think. “Why would you want that?”
“I think it’d just be an honor. To know you, that is.”
His heart was slamming against his chest now, frantic as butterfly wing beats against a closed window.
An honor.

“-And I would like to conclude by pointing out that many of these laws have been passed with not an ounce of input from the communities they are impacting. Werewolves, for example, have no say in-“
A scoff, from her opponent.
Princess Miradevi Surya Lakshmi drew herself up slightly behind the podium, her ordinarily soft brown eyes narrowing.
“As I was saying. Werewolves are denied employment due to archaic laws they have no control over. Muggleborns like myself are still not represented in the Wizengamot, and if this society has any hope for cohesion and collective action, perhaps the government should focus on repairing what is broken rather than taking a hammer to an already shaky foundation. The Purity Act reeks of injustice, corruption, and a horrific attempt at subjugating muggleborns and halfbloods.” Miradevi stepped back from the podium, chin lifted.
“I yield my time.”
Silence, for a few beats, before there was tentative applause echoing in the lecture hall.
Professor Binn’s wizarding politics course was not exactly rousing, and his debate exercises were hardly crowd stirrers. Dissent from the norm was few and far between, the class somewhat of a droning echo chamber despite Binns’ best efforts at sparking discussion.
“Your highness.”
Miradevi turned, the princess’s lips lifting into a smile at the familiar, aristocratic voice. She reached out a mehendi- patterned hand to the heir of Slytherin as he approached her.
“Ominis.”
Ominis Gaunt took her hand, trying not fixate on how soft the slender digits were, how perfectly they fit in his palm- a puzzle piece coming together, the edges and curves slotting beautifully together.
“My princess.” He murmured, his voice soft as he bowed, bringing his lips to brush a gentle kiss to the back of her hand. “You were… incredible. I do think Atticus Zabini will choose his battles more carefully in the future.”
Miradevi laughed, ducking her head slightly in a rare moment of humility. Her brothers long suffered their little sisters’ crowing when she bested them in anything, yet she could not bring herself to do the same now.
“You’re very heavy handed with the flattery.” She tried to brush it off, willing away the heat rising on her neck.
Beyond the hall, the students were swarming to their next classes or to the grounds beyond the university. Spring was upon them, and Mira could taste the nectar- sweet scent of flowers blooming on the hills, the sharp snap of pollen in her nose.
“I do not say things I don’t mean.” Ominis realized she had fallen into step beside him, following him, letting him guide her through the stone halls. “You were articulate and erudite, and I do hope that your thoughts on the Purity Act reach people who are in desperate need to hear it.”
“I don’t understand how such a law could even be suggested, let alone open to debate in the Wizengamot.” Miradevi frowned slightly. “And any voice of dissent is suppressed. Muggleborns who take issue with the law have to go through ridiculous beauraucratic hoop-jumping to get their voices heard when we are the ones most likely to be affected by it.”
“Absolute power corrupts absolutely, my princess.” Ominis said quietly. “The Wizengamot has always catered to the whims of pureblood families and have been rewarded immensely for it.”
“Good to know that corruption is a constant no matter where one goes.” Mira’s tone was airy. Feeling slightly daring, she gently squeezed Ominis’ hand. “I must take my leave. My next class is all the way on the other side of the castle. I hope I run into you again, Ominis.”
“The sentiment is shared, my princess.” He said quietly. He heard a soft rustle of fabric and realized Miradevi had given him a small curtsey.
Heat flooded his face at the political implication of that move and before he could say anything or do anything besides gape slightly, the princess had walked off with a swish of her sari, her heeled shoes clicking on the flagstones.

“I feel… still.”
Miradevi cracked open her eyes, squinting slightly against the glare of sunlight. Her arms were crossed behind her head as she lay on the soft grass swaying against her, wildflowers blooming along the steep slopes of the Scottish highlands.
The princess turned slightly, where Ominis lay on the grass beside her, his hands interlaced on his chest.
“How do you mean?”
“I mean..” Ominis sighed softly.
What did he mean?
“…I feel the grass on my skin. I can hear the wind in the pines- and nothing is pulling me away from that. Like my body is melting into the earth and this moment could be my last but- I’d have no issue with it.”
Mira made a satisfied little sound, shifting on the grass. A little smile quirked her lips as her eyes slid closed again, the sun lulling her into drowsy lethargy.
“That’s fine. I think that’s just peace, Ominis.”
xxxxxxxx
Ominis had never liked the roar of the ocean. It conjured up far too vivid sensations of being buffeted by towering waves, submerged despite any attempts at keeping his head above water. He’d never gone deeper into a body of water than his ankles, anyway.
There was no point.
He’d fought all his life to keep his head above water. To claw and kick and scream against the tide tht dragged him down and this- this felt like a sweet surrender.
Like the waters of the warm tropics, of the far-off beaches he heard about where the ocean was calm.
Gentle.
And he could let the tide take him, knowing it would never try and pull him under.
xxxxxxxxxxx
Three weeks. Three weeks, 21 days, gods knew how many seconds she had been in his life.
It was a torment sweeter than anything Ominis had ever tasted in his life. For some unfathomable reason she was haunting him, the faint sound of her laughter or the chatter of her molasses- thick accent drifting along the ancient stone walls just a few moments too late before he could catch up to her.
She was a figment of his imagination, he tried to tell himself. A small piece of starlight captured from the sky and cupped secretly in the palms of his hands -but then he’d enter the common room, or a lecture hall and-
Hello, Ominis!
Kaise ho, Ominis?
Sab kuch theek chal raha hai?
She’d be there.
Her presence, solid and real, shining bright as a solar flare. She’d chatter with him, her voice dropping slightly from the stately, regal tone it usually held, sometimes a mishmash of Hindi and English as she got enthusiastic.
Like water breathing life into dry earth, the princess seeped into each carefully constructed wall around him, seeping in through cracks too splintered to patch. He tried, he tried- to press bleeding hands to the walls and keep her out, but the attempt was doomed from the start.

AN: shorter one, but I’m trying to cook up a plot 😅This chapter was inspired entirely by Hozier’s cover of Do I Wanna Know, and also me being very emotional about the TikTok ban 🥲 as always, pls feel free to let me know what you think!

List 5 facts about a favorite sim of yours, and send this to 10 simblrs whose sims you adore ✌️💗💗
ELIJAH RAI DEVI.*
Elijah is the epitome of daddy issues, but honestly he's got every single possible issue by the time he's old enough to drink. This poor man is going through it constantly 😭
Elijah almost got kidnapped when he was a week old and his mom Anya was so out of it she lowkey stabbed the guy and was so guilty that she just called his dad Asher and told them not to bother coming back home, that she was gonna start moving everything they needed into the house they were planning to move into anyway and to just drive there after his shift.
Elijah was born when Anya was 17 and Asher was 21. She had just barely finished high school by the time he was born and only started college when he was around 3 years old. Since his dad worked much longer shifts than his mom, he was always closer to Anya and Asher.
He met his best friend Roxy on the first day of kindergarten when they were paired together for an art project. They stayed friends until she was killed when they were 16 years old by her father.
Elijah is 8 years older than his sister Aathira and 12 years older than his brother JJ. He actually named Aathira lol
his addiction is like lowkey one of the only things he really remembers from being a teenager. most of elijah's memories are being high, hanging out with roxy, arguing with his dad, and being appointed the third parent to his little siblings.
and roxy dying, but he honestly considers that the end of his teenage years because he runs away and joins the military the second he can
and for like a while anya and asher don't notice because they have a one year old and a five year old at home that constantly need attention and elijah's always been like. independent
elijah looks older too. by the time he's like 14 that guy can grow a beard, so no one really looks at him weird when he buys stuff. it doesn't really start affecting his entire life until he's 15 and he does heroine for the first time, but that just spirals. he's always mad at his dad and that he talks so much shit but doesn't even blink when he's gone for hours, he's mad at roxy's dad for being fucking creepy and making her feel uncomfortable in her own house, he's mad at the town because nothing good ever fucking happens in it, and he's mad at himself for being so dependent on something he can't handle a few days without losing it. he hates being sober because he's literally just the embodiment of anger.
he runs away at 16 and the second he turns 18 he joins the military because he thinks that if he dies in battle it would be a 'good' way to die. better than overdosing.
OOKAY HAPPY STUFF NOW
he meets nilaani when he's 23 while he's drunkenly venting to him while he's serving her at tha bar and they eventually have a marriage of convenience (fake marriage) to appease her family
the tattoo on his hand in the henna that nilaani had on their wedding day. she admitted to him that she felt that he viewed her more as a burden than anything because it was her family that was the driving factor behind their marriage. elijah's like 'wtf, you're the coolest, smartest girl i've ever met dummy' and the next day he shows her the tattoo. that's when they have their first actual kiss 😋😋
when they find out that nilaani was having twins, she names their daughet lakshmi after the goddess lakshmi, and since at that point they didn't know that jj was still alive, he names their son jayden. their nicknames are lucky and jj 😓😓

Ever since I saw Ponniyin Selvan, I’ve been on a quest to watch many Tamil movies, since I think the last Tamil film I watched before the PS saga was Kandukondain Kandukondain (that was at a time when I was watching Jane Austen adaptations non-stop!) I’ve been choosing in a rather erratic way from films that either were directed by Mani Ratnam or starred Trisha, Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bacchan, Jayam Ravi, Karthi or Jeyaram. (As far as I’m aware, neither Aishwarya Lakshmi nor Shobhita Dhulipala have acted in other Tamil movies? I do have Shobhita’s Prime show to watch though.)
The other actors whose movies I’m also watching are Vijay Sethupathi and Samantha Prabhu because I saw their acting in “Farzi” and “The Family Man” (both Hindi-language OTT series directed and produced by two Telugu gentlemen so really very all-India!) After I watched Thani Oruvan, I added Nayanthara and Aravind Swamy to the list so … basically, I’m set for like the next 20 years ;)
Sometimes I get lucky and two of the actors are in THE SAME MOVIE. Which brings me to the fact that I watched “Unnakum Ennakum” last night, and my goodness, Arulmozhi Varman and Kundavai Devi were SUCH BABIES in this film. (Also, much closer to the ages of their characters in Kalki’s novel - Arulmozhi Varman is 19 and Kundavai is 21, and Aditha Karikalan is 25 … so yeah.) This movie came out in 2006 so I think Trisha was 23-24 and Ravi was about 25-26?

Farming is HARD WORK, y’all, but this boy was willing to collect cow dung in his bare hands for the sake of Trisha. And who wouldn’t! (Vandiyadevan would die for her, but would he plow and plant rice and milk cows? Hmm?)

This picture is for contrast! They’re still beautiful, but definitely not playing 19-21 year olds any more :)
