McPike Mansion
Illinois
Tucked away in the southwest corner of Illinois, not far from St. Louis, lies the town of Alton. Considered one of the âmost haunted small towns in Americaâ Alton has no shortage of ghost stories and haunted places. One of the best known is the McPike Mansion.
The Italianate-Victorian style building looms over citizens of Alton from atop the highest point of the town, Mt. Lookout. Nestled among contorted oak trees, McPike Mansion ranks as one of the most haunted buildings in the state. The structure has been featured on two television shows, âScariest Places on Earthâ and âFact or Faked: Paranormal Files.â
The three-story red brick building was erected in 1869 for Henry McPike and his family. McPike was a local businessman and horticulturist. He served as mayor of Alton for three years and developed the nationally known McPike grape. With its 16 rooms and vaulted wine cellar, the McPike Mansion was one of the largest and most extravagant private dwellings in Alton at this time.
The mansionâs next owner was Paul Laichinger. During his time in the home, Mr. Laichinger rented out rooms to boarders. Soon, these tenants began to experience strange events that could not be explained. Some of these occurrences involve the sounds of children playing and laughing together when there were no children on the grounds.
After Laichingerâs death in 1945, the property sat vacant. Weather and trespassers helped to turn the dwelling from elegant to menacing. The rusting iron fence, broken windows, dilapidated structure and graveyard made passersby intrigued and fearful. Reports of faces looming in the windows began to surface.
In 1994, the McPike Mansion was purchased by Sharyn and George Luedke. Their hope is to restore the building to its former glory and allow it to serve as a bed and breakfast or a historical attraction. Within six weeks, Mrs. Luedke had her first experience. She was gardening in the front yard when she looked up to see a strange man staring at her from the window. He soon disappeared, but not before she was able to take note of his attire. Later, while researching the history of the mansion, Mrs. Luedke was startled as she came across a photo of previous owner Paul Laichinger wearing the same outfit as the man in the window.
Since then, McPike Mansion has hosted numerous psychics and mediums. Many have felt the presence of the McPike family and other residents of the estate. Sharyn Luedke herself believes the ghost of not only Paul Laichnger, but also of servant girl Sarah Wells roam the halls. Her lilac perfume can still be smelled in the attic.
Other experiences include light orbs that appear in photos, sensations of being touched, pacing footsteps and vanishing objects. Some of these have been caught on film. The most active room in the house is the wine cellar. Here a mysterious mist appears and seems to follow visitors as the move around the basement. A bulky metal door leading to the area scraped across the floor as it moves on its own.

The Haunted Atlas
McPike Mansion - Alton, Illinois
38°54âČ21âłN / 90°11âČ0âłW
House in Alton, Illinois, called the "most haunted" site in the region where the Mississippi and Missouri rivers meet. In deteriorated condition, the McPike Mansion is not occupied, but nonetheless draws visitors for the apparitions seen on the grounds and looking out from the windows. Phenomena inside the mansion also have been experienced.
History
The McPike Mansion is named after the man who built itâHenry Guest McPike, a man of Scottish descent who made his fortune in Alton in real estate, manufacturing, and insurance. He came to Alton with his parents in 1847, when he was 22. He quickly gained wealth, eventually owning more than 700 properties and two fire insurance companies.
McPike sided with the abolitionists, and when Abraham Lincoln ran for a seat in the U.S. Senate, McPike organized a famous outdoor debate on the riverside between Lincoln and his opponent, Stephen Douglas, in Alton in 1858. In those days, Alton was a major commercial and political center, far outranking nearby St. Louis, Missouri. McPike turned down various offers of political office, but did serve as mayor of Alton in 1887 and 1891.
McPike had the mansion built in 1869. It was his pride and joy, a symbol of graciousness and wealth, and one of the most spectacular homes in the area. McPike commissioned the famous architect Lucas Pleiffenberger to design it. The result was a masterpiece of Italianate-Victorian beauty set on a 15-acre piece of land. The house has 16 rooms with 12-foot-high ceilings and a basement with a vaulted wine cellar. McPike called his home "Mount Lookout." He had the property landscaped and cultivated with vineyards that became famous for the "McPike grape."
After McPike died, his family continued to live in style in the mansion. In 1925, the mansion was purchased by Paul Laichinger, who may have rented it out. Upon Laichinger's death in 1945, the mansion was turned into a boarding house.
For years the mansion was vacant and tell into dis-repair. By 1990, it looked more like the fictional abode of the Addams Family than a once-magnificent piece of architecture. Gary Hendrix, a St. Louis contractor, came to its rescue and bought the mansion, planning to renovate it and restore it to its former full glory. He did little work on it, however, and in 1994 sold it at auction to George and Sharyn Luedke, both educators.
The Luedkes had been long interested in acquiring an old house to fix up. However, they were surprised to be the wining bidders. Soon the house next door to the McPike Mansion went up for sale, and they bought it and moved in. Their plan is to restore the mansion and turn it into a bed and breakfast.
The Luedkes have had a long, uphill struggle, despite the fact that the mansion was placed on the list of Illinois's Most Endangered Places. They gave it recognition as a historical and architectural structure worthy of preservation and brought in a small amount of grant money for restoration. But the total estimated costs are high, and work has proceeded slowly. In 2002, the mansion was deemed unsafe and was condemned.
The Luedkes have established a nonprofit historical society to help raise renovation funds. Sharyn keeps the haunting history of the place alive with published accounts, lectures, and ghost tour visits to the grounds. Visitors are not allowed inside.
Haunting Activity
Stories about ghosts at the McPike Mansion circulated back when the place was a boarding house. More recently, untrue stories have circulated about ghosts from murders and suicides thereânot uncommon fictitious lore to be attached to a spooky-looking place.
From the beginning of the Luedkes'ownership, Sharyn experienced haunting phenomena and identified the ghost of Laichinger as present in the house. Laichinger had been a heavy smoker, and the smell of cigarette smoke occasionally arises. Could it be the accumulated residue of smoke imbued into the building materials, released as the materials deteriorate? Perhaps, but smoking has been prohibited inside the mansion for many decades. According to Sharyn, a group of visitors once even saw a cloud of cigarette smoke form.
Another ghost experienced by Sharyn and others seems to be a servant, whom Sharyn named Sarah. A surprising historical connection came later, when Sharyn was given some books that had been removed from the house many years earlier. One of them bore the name "Sarah Wells." Sharyn has been hugged by this ghost, who also is associated with smells of lilac on the third floor. (Two of the most common smells associated with hauntings are tobacco and lilac.)
In 1999, an eerie white mist was videotaped by paranormal investigator Renee Kruse in the basement. Kruse was among a group of visitors being given a tour by Sharyn. The mist suddenly appeared, moved toward the group, and enveloped them. According to Kruse, it had the feel of an electrical charge to it. Kruse followed the mist, which seemed to react to her. It eventually vanished.
In 2001, another dramatic experience befall a group of paranormal investigators, among them Kruse, Troy Taylor, Dale Kazmarek, Dave Goodwin, Jim Graczyk, and Sharyn Luedke. The group went down into the vaulted wine cellar. Kruse escorted Kazmarek's wife, Ruth, upstairs and outside. Shortly there were sounds of footsteps crossing the floor above and coming down the basement stairs and the heavy door of the wine cellar creaked open. All assumed that it was Kruse returning to the cellar, but no one appeared. Kazmarek looked outside the wine cellar, but the entire basement area appeared to be empty. Kruse returned a few minutes laterâshe had been outside during the time the footsteps and door creaking were heard. The sounds of the door opening on its own were caught on an audio recorder.
Other phenomena include footsteps up and down the staircases and poltergeist effects: objects that mysteriously disappear and reappear in another location.

The McPike Mystery: A Wadlow Sibling Fic (part 2/2)
the siblings are at mcpike mansion! when they find a way inside... they find out some spooky things!
The quartet walked up the steps to the big rounded door. Eugene, tightened his grip on Robertâs camera case. (How Robert wished Gene had never found it!) He pulled the door handleâŠ
âShoot, itâs locked!â Eugene exclaimed. âMaybe I can-â
Robert stopped him as he held up the camera case. âIâm not letting you break the door down with my camera.â
âWell, Iâll find a way in. Iâm not leaving without a photo!â
âCanât you just snap one here?â Frances asked as he walked away.
âThe guys wonât let up if I do!â
Robert rolled his eyes. He wished Eugene would think more rationally! He could also say the same for Harold Jr., who had scurried off. Robert and Frances followed the brothers around the side of the house. âI have to say, this is impressive.â Frances remarked, gazing up at the towering windows.
âYeah, it looks nice,â Robert agreed shyly. âI- What was that?â
âWhat was what?â
Soft, childish laughter could be heard.
âThat.â
Robert and Frances looked around, not seeing a laugher in sight. All they could see were dozens of tree trunks, which were too thin to hide behind.
âEugene!â Robert exclaimed, forgetting about the mysterious culprits.
To his shock, Eugene was opening a window!
âWhat?â Gene asked. âIt was already cracked. Iâm just getting some more fresh air in here.â
Robert made a move to grab him, but he hopped into the mansion, picking Harold Jr. up.
Junior giggled at the swift action. He looked around the room and exclaimed, âWow! Big Brother, itâs you!â
Robert frowned. âIâm not in there.â
He and Frances looked inside. The brothers were in a library! Dozens of old books decorated the shelves.
Robert grinned at the sight of them. âIf only I was!â âOh!â Frances exclaimed. âHow lovely!â
She stepped into the mansion, her fear dissipated. She looked through a copy of Jane Eyre, whispering something about someone named Sarah while Robert leaned through the window gap. It was too small for him to get through, but he could still admire the library. Harold Jr. ran around, looking up at round wooden tables.
âMmm, whatâs that smell?â Robert asked.
âProbably all these musty books.â Eugene remarked with disdain.
âExcuse you, these smell magnificent,â Frances took a deep breath. âThereâs nothing better than the scent of old pages!â
âI agree,â Robert said. âBut itâs not thatâŠâ He took a deep breath. âIt smells like lilacs.â
âWhy, it does!â Frances agreed. âItâs just like my motherâs perfume,â She frowned, slowly and nervously closing her book. âSheâs not here, is she?â
âNo, I donât see her anywhereâŠâ Robert frowned. âStrange.â
âAnd I donât see any flowers.â Harold Jr. added.
Eugene took Robertâs camera out of its case. âWho cares about flowers? I need a picture!â
He aimed the camera at the multiple shelves of books, chuckling at what the guys were sure to say. Theyâd be so-
A knock on the door caused everyone to freeze. Robert did as well, his hands clammy.
âRobert!â Helen called, running up to him. âWhatâs going-â She ground while looking through the window. âEugene!â
âLetâs run!â Harold Jr. exclaimed.
âWhoâs in there?â a voice asked.
Before Junior could make it to the window, the door flew open. A man was standing there!
âAhhh!â Harold Jr. exclaimed. âA vampire!â
Frances screamed!
âA what?â the man asked before touching his slightly pointy ears. âNo, Iâm not a vampire. Iâm the owner of this mansion!â
âSo youâre a ghost!â Frances exclaimed, dropping her book in shock.
The man chuckled. âNo, Iâm Paul Laichinger. I rent rooms out to people. This is my hotel.â âThatâs why itâs closed off!â Helen told the others. âNot for some silly ghosts.â
âWell, I wouldnât rule that out. Some of my guests complain about hearing kids in the middle of the night. Iâve gone around the property with a flashlight, but no one ever shows up.â
Robertâs eyebrows raised. âWe heard some kids laughing earlier! That couldâve been them.â
Mr. Laichinger smiled at him. âYouâre the Wadlow kid, arenât you?â
âYes, sir.â Robert responde with a nod. âWhat might you and your friends be doing here? Trespassing, I might add?â
âOh, Iâm not trespassing. My brothers and sisterâs friend are.â
Frances flushed. âIâm lured by libraries!â
âHey, Iâm only here because I lost a bet.â Eugene said.
âAnd I think itâs fun!â Harold Jr. added.
âDo any of your guests use perfume, by chance?â Robert inquired.
âDorothy does,â Mr. Laichinger chuckled. âThe scent of roses hasnât left my nose for days.â
âWhat we smelled was lilac.â
âLilac⊠I donât recall anyone with that scent,â Mr. Laichinger paused. âWell, besides Sarah. But she hasnât been here in years.â
âWas her last name Wells?â Frances asked. âI found her name in a book.â
âI think it was! She was Henryâs former servant, if I recall correctly.â
The siblings and Frances gave each other worried looks.
âAnd I think we smelled her.â
Helen rolled her eyes. âCome on, guys, you donât really believe Sarahâs ghost is here, do you?â
âThen how do you explain the lilacs?â Robert asked her. âDorothy or whoever else is staying here probably put on some perfume. Or maybe they brought in really strong flowers,â Helen crossed her arms. âBut itâs certainly not a-â
The sound of a twig snapping caused her to stop. She turned around, her eyes wide. âGHOST!!!â Harold Jr. yelled. He ran out of the library, hiding behind Robert.
âYes, please leave!â Mr. Laichinger encouraged them. âBefore anyone else gets the idea of trespassing.â
Frances breathed in the lilac scent before leaving. Eugene stayed put, however. He held up Robertâs camera.
âItâs time for you to go, young man.â Mr. Laichinger said.
âBut I still need to get a photo!â
âI guess one photograph wonât hurt⊠as long as you donât show it to the entire town!â
âGot it.â
Before Gene could hold up the camera, however, a scream pierced the autumn air.
âThere are TWO ghosts!!â Frances exclaimed.
âSave us, Big Brother!â Harold Jr. said.
Robert stared at the sight in front of him, then at Helenâs pale face. He almost thought she was right, that ghosts didnât exist.
But the shadows looming towards them proved otherwise.
âMcPike and Sarahâs ghosts! What do I do?â Robert asked.
âYouâre over eight feet tall!â Frances said. âThat should work.â
âSeeing how theyâre still coming towards us, I donât think it will.â
âStay back!â Helen ordered.
âYEAH!â Robert yelled, startling her. âThat ought to do it.â
Just then, a third shadow came out from within the trees!
â...Or not.â
The shadows raised their arms, revealing black hands. Harold Jr. whimpered, but Robertâs eyes widened.
âWait a secondâŠâ
He was cut off as the shadows ran at them!
âYAAA!â a yell broke out.
A flurry of screams rose as a spider flew through the air! Frances screamed as well, watching as it landed on the frightened shadows, who collapsed.
âBetty!â Harold Jr. exclaimed.
Betty bounded up to the siblings and Frances. âI was getting so worried about you guys! Then I saw those lumps creep up to the house⊠I had to stop them.â
âItâs a good thing you did,â Robert said. âThey wouldâve run right into us!â
âJust who are you, anyways?â Harold Jr. asked.
Betty, Helen and Robert marched right up to the shadows, which were actually fabric. When they raised the black clothâŠ
âWhat in the world?â Eugene asked in surprise.
Three teen-aged boys rose from the ground. They were Eugeneâs friends!
âWhat are you guys doing here?ââSeeing if you survived McPike.â one of them replied. âAnd, you know, checking out the place for ourselves.â another added.
Eugene rolled his eyes. âYeah, right. You were trying to scare me off!â
The look that passed between the three boys told it all.
âAt first we thought youâd be too chicken⊠until we realized that there wasnât much to be chicken about.â the third boy said.
âSo we decided to up the ante.â the first boy added.
âYeah, really spook you!â The second oneâs grin faded. âWe didnât think youâd go through with it so easily.â âNor did you think about what you were doing.â Robert added.
Eugene smiled at the other Wadlows. âItâs not too bad with your siblings around.â
The siblings smiled back.
âWell!â Mr. Laichinger said with a clap of his hands. âWeâve all learned our lessons today, didnât we?â
âYes, sir,â Robert replied. âDonât intrude on a place just because your friends told you to.â
âEspecially a haunted one!â Frances added.
âInstead of trying to sneak in⊠Why donât you just book a night or two?â Mr. Laichinger suggested before running his hand through his widow peaked hair with a groan. âHappy Halloween, kids!â
âHappy Halloween!â they replied as he walked out of the library.
Then he poked his head through the door to say, âAnd be sure to close that window!â
Eugene handed the camera to one of his friends. âYou take the picture.â
After the guy took the photo, Gene stepped out of the window. He smiled while saying, âI may have lost the bet, but I won at getting a look at McPike Mansion!â
As everyone walked back to the car, Harold Jr. asked Robert, âDo you think the ghosts really exist, Big Brother?â
âItâs hard to say for sureâŠâ Robert chuckled as a faintly floral-scented breeze tickled his neck. âBut they just might.â

Lookout. The most active room in the house is the wine cellar. Here a mysterious mist appears and seems to follow visitors as the move around the basement. A bulky metal door leading to the area scraped across the floor as it moves on its own.
