Hello Tumblr friends and anyone who comes across this post
So I'm sure everyone is aware of the terrible wildfires that Maui recently went through and have seen plenty of posts sharing links to different ways they can help out the people of Maui
I have a sister who lives there and thankfully was not harmed and is now doing her part to help rebuild what was destroyed. She was also kind of enough to share links that will directly help the people of Maui
I figured I could share those here:
'Aina Momona: MAUI RELIEF | ainamomona (kaainamomona.org) <- This is a Native Hawaiian organization whose purpose is achieving environmental health and sustainability in Hawaii. Currently they are taking donations to help support the people of Maui
Petition · Lahaina Town Recovery- Stop Big Business Development · Change.org <- This is a Change.org petition started by a resident of Lahaina that is trying to prevent big businesses from exploiting this tragedy and using it as an opportunity for their own and it still needs plenty of signatures. They're also asking for donations of at least $8 so if you are signing it, please donate
And something I want to add myself:
My sister works at the Pacific Whale Foundation (or PACWhale Eco Adventures) which is a non-profit organization that protects the ocean as well as marine life. They currently have their own Emergency Relief Fund as well:  Emergency Relief Fund (pacificwhale.org)
Their organization makes a lot of their money through their whale tours where most of their passengers are tourists. It's gonna be very unlikely that they'll be doing any tours any time soon so if you wish to donate to their organization here is a link for that: You Can Help | Pacific Whale Foundation

Help Maui in anyway you can
Donate and share ways to help.
Share the voices of the people of Maui and Hawai'i.
Do not take a vacation on Hawai'i island's, the resources need to go to Hawaiian people. Hotels are hospitals, food and water belong to the people. Not tourists there for fun. People lost their entire families, their homes. And history.
Children were home alone, elderly with only landlines, and all that was sent out was text alert to evacuate, 5 minutes before the fire reached them. The evacuation sirens were abandoned by those meant to signal.
And people are complaining that they're not getting refunds on their Maui vacation.
100s if not about 1000 people could be dead Becky, fuck your vacation.
My friend, whose a teacher on the N. Side might never see some of her students again.
The link in "Donate" above is a donation page confirmed by the people of Maui to be for the people of Maui. This is all I can do, share what I've been told, and uplift their voices on tiktok/instagram/etc..
RN Tiktok is the only place I can find viable sources on this because they're there. They're the people surviving this. They are the only ones who give the facts, because they aren't censoring it so people don't feel too bad. People should feel bad.
It's sad that people are dead, pets and wildlife are dead, and history in ashes. It's something to feel bad about, to cry about. They don't even vet to properly grieve yet. They can't sleep, they close their eyes they see carnage. And when awake, they see hot spots that could start it all over again.
This isn't something that should be dumbed down.
Say cars full of people went up in flames, homes with children wondering why their cartoons stopped and the powers out, elderly stuck where they are. Because that's what happened. And they didn't get a warning because those who were supposed to signal it ran.

LAHAINA IS GONE. MAUI IS STILL HERE
The loss of Lahaina and more than 100 residents in the horrific wildfire of 2023 was one of the most devastating tragedies in modern Hawaiian history, alongside Pearl Harbor and the Hilo tsunamis. Many years will pass until Lahaina is rebuilt and emotional scars heal. One way to cope with Lahaina’s fate is to celebrate the places that are still here. One is Baldwin Beach Park near Paia, where…

Things To Know About Living In West Maui
Tumblr media
Things to know about living in West Maui
Tumblr media
The Hawaiian monarch formerly vacationed on Maui's tropical northwest coast and served as the nation's capital. Today, West Maui is home to magnificent resorts, shops, restaurants, a wide range of activities, and some of the world's most breathtaking sunsets.
You may go from one sun-kissed resort to the next along the Honoapiilani Highway, each with its distinct character. The ancient whaling hamlet of Lhain is the first destination after leaving Maalaea and the Maui Ocean Center. While busy shops on Front Street and winter whale viewing make it a preferred port of call for cruise ship passengers, rustic structures commemorate its days as Hawai'i's biggest port.
On the Highway for a short while, you'll be attracted to the energetic Kaanapali Resort. A stroll along the Kaanapali Beach walk is always in order, regardless of whether you're staying nearby or are simply passing by. Families play on the beach, shoppers bustle in and out, while restaurants sit back and soak in the scenery. With the West Maui Mountains rising in the distance and providing some fantastic hiking routes, West Maui is one of the finest areas of Maui. It also boasts some of the best beaches on the island (if you don't mind the crowds) and is near Honolua Bay, Lahaina, and Ka'anapali.
On this side of the island, resorts blend into one another, and Kapalua, renowned for championship golf and exclusive vacations, is not far away. Here, the elegance is modest, and the tone is a little calmer. The original Maui resort locations are still in West Maui, where most visitors congregate today. Typically bright and dry, West Maui has ideal beach weather. Additionally, West Maui offers a variety of lodging choices, so whether you want to save money by staying in a condo or spend on a beachfront resort, you can find it there.

So, how would daily living be on west Maui?
Tumblr media
On Front Street, Lahaina's main street, one of the most enormous banyan trees in the world, stands as a recognizable landmark. Front Street offers unlimited dining options, including gourmet dining at Lahaina Grill, outlet stores, boutiques, gift shops, surf shops, and art galleries. It also contains a movie theater. Fleetwood's (owned by Fleetwood Mac member Mick Fleetwood, a Maui resident) offers upscale fare, distinctive cocktails, and live music in a rooftop bar with a view of the setting sun over the water. At the same time, Aloha Mixed Plate serves excellent local fare like poke, saimin, and chicken katsu and offers views of even more spectacular sunsets.
youtube
What about the beaches, though?
Tumblr media
At Kaanapali Beach and Kahekili Beach, which also boasts exceptional snorkeling conditions and family-friendly amenities, including bathrooms, showers, and a picnic area, West Maui residents may readily access large expanses of beach. Black Rock, which currently draws tourists for its snorkeling but was formerly known to early Hawaiians as Pu'u Keka'a, a holy site where the spirits of the dead leaped from the physical world into the spirit world, stands between the two. At the same time, Kapalua Bay (designated Best Beach in America by the Travel Channel and Best Beach in the World by Conde Nast Traveler magazine) offers a gorgeous, crescent-shaped Napili Bay with sweet white beaches and quiet waves.
What else can you expect to discover in west Maui?
Tumblr media
The Mahana Ridge Trail meanders through old coffee and pineapple farms with stunning coastlines and gulch vistas along the way, while the two-mile Kapalua Coastal Trail weaves its way around four of the area's gorgeous coves. The Lahaina/Kaanapali/Kapalua shore offers endless chances for canoeing, stand-up paddling, and diving for those interested in water experiences. From here, ferries to Lanai and some of the island's top whale-watching excursions and sunset boat cruises (run by Pacific Whale Foundation and Trilogy, for example) leave. Inter-island flights are also offered from a tiny airport at Kapalua.
Front Street is closed to automobile traffic on the second Friday of every month to celebrate a town celebration with food, music, and arts & crafts. Additionally, Lahaina celebrates a Chinese Kite Festival in April and a Chinese New Year event in February. The town hosts the island's only professional fireworks show during its Fourth of July celebration. Its Halloween procession and festivities have earned the title "Mardi Gras of the Pacific."
Other local events include the Celebration of the Arts (including hula performances and other Hawaiian arts, crafts, and cuisine) each March and the Kapalua Tournament of Champions (held each January). Every June, Kapalua has a Wine and Food Festival, and for Kapalua Restaurant Week, local eateries produce unique tasting menus.

You may go on year-round excursions and stay at magnificent resorts in West Maui. The majority of visitors choose to stay longer on the island. Owning property on the island is a wise decision since it enables you to take advantage of its peace whenever and however you choose.
Property values consistently rise
Visitors are drawn to West Maui by its beauty and can return as often as they like. Some people buy a vacation home so they won't have to book hotels or rent rooms each time they visit. However, as more individuals become interested in investing in the island's assets, property values continue to increase consistently.
The island's top beaches are reachable
Tourists typically identify the island's gorgeous West Maui beach as the main draw for visiting. Consider investing in West Maui prime real estate if you love the ocean and want to visit the most excellent beaches anywhere.
A job in paradise
Because of their work responsibilities, many people are hesitant to own real estate on the island. However, the COVID-19 epidemic showed everyone working from home for a while that it is possible to work anywhere.
Living there is typically safe
Millions of tourists visit Maui Island every year, but neither the airport nor the city's main streets need to be guarded by armed soldiers. However, even though crime does exist here, it is frequently less prevalent than in other parts of the country. The island will keep you secure.

Kaniela Ing said Lahaina’s pre-colonial history is particularly important for people to know—not just for the sake of Lahaina’s Native residents, but because it reveals the deeply unnatural roots of this so-called “natural” disaster. After all, he noted, Lahaina used to be a wetland. It was only because of colonization and climate change that it became a tinderbox. “Lahaina wasn’t always a dry, fire-prone region. It was very wet and lush, historically. Boats would circle the famous Waiola Church. Lahaina was also the breeding place of aquaculture. It had some of the world's first and most innovative systems of fish ponds. ”But at the dawn of the 18th century, sugar barons arrived and illicitly diverted the water to irrigate the lands they had stolen. (Note: 18th century European sugar and pineapple barons also brought invasive grasses, Wired reports, which now cover 26 percent of Hawaii and become “explosive” fuel for wildfires.) “Today, descendants from those same barons amass fast profits from controlling our irrigation, our land use, and political influence. Alexander and Baldwin are two big missionary families of the original oligarchs, and they’re currently the largest landowners on Maui. That’s the name of their corporation and they’re one of the top political donors here today. “So on one hand, the climate emergency caused this. On the other, it’s also that history of colonial greed that made Lahaina the dry place that it is."

Aloha to everyone who comes across this post,
If you don’t know- Maui, Hawai’i has underwent the most devastating, traumatic tragedy thus far. The presence of Hurricane Dora has caused great winds to pick up rapidly, causing destruction & a mass wildfire to spread; completely engulfing the historic town- Lāhainā.
Homes were burnt to ashes, businesses, schools, churches EVERYTHING. The people of Lāhainā have experienced a burdening loss of their land & home, some have lost a pet, or/and a family member💔There are still ppl missing; bodies still being found (floating in the ocean, burnt in cars with their ohana or holding on to their other half )
It is truly like a scene out of a movie, but worse. An apocalyptic scene. A destructive heartbreak to all of Hawai’i. All in all, this is history in the making.
I am sharing this hoping it reaches those near & far so the word can spread. If you feel it in your heart to help in any way possible please read each photo thoroughly, repost, share, follow, donate, or simply just understand that right now Maui is not open for travel. Right now Maui residents are stranded; no running water, electricity, food, clothes, gasoline, cell service etc.
They need time to come back from this. WE need time to HELP them; right now all the people of Hawai’i have been coming together to help but tourism will only be getting in the way; will only be using up the valuable resources that the people of Lāhainā need more than ever right now.
If you reach this, Mahalo🤍🤙🏽
the tagged profile mentioned in the pictures are on instagram- please follow for updates & resources/ information.
Other accounts that are good to follow on ig in regards to the Lāhainā Fire:

Most people don't have any understanding of what has been lost in Lahaina Town. Not just lives and property, but an entire town.
Most people hear "a city/town in Hawaii" and they picture probably resorts. And there are plenty of resorts nearby. But those are all fine.
Lahaina was an old whaling town dating back to the original colonization by white settlers. Before white people arrived, it was the capital of the island, where the high chief ruled, including Kamehameha the Great. The buildings are old, wooden, and crowded together. Obviously that was a problem in the face of the insanely fast wildfire.
But these weren't mansions, Mc or otherwise. It was a tourist town, a destination for cute, spendy shopping and dining, full of art galleries. (OMG THE GALLERIES. There was so much ART lost. There was original Dr. Seuss art in one gallery when I was there in January. That's gone now. Etc.)
But the people who lived and worked in Lahaina were mostly working class, working retail and restaurant jobs, living in old apartments and small houses. Lots of elderly, lots of non-white in a wide range of ethnicities, old hippies who have been there since the 60s and 70s. Yeah they were probably a little better off than people who drive in from other places to work in West Maui, at least because their property was high value, if they owned. But they lived without A/C, hung their laundry on lines, biked to work, called in sick to go surfing when the waves were up. There was a Chinese cultural center and a Buddhist temple, two different structures, if that tells you anything. Multiple museums housing historic items and cultural centers.
And the town will be rebuilt, in some form, I imagine. Or re-developed, more likely. People who are now homeless, who can't afford to rebuild or pay for two residences while the recovery happens will be bought out by deep pocketed developers. If they rebuild Lahaina Town I'm afraid it will be Lahaina Town tm by Disney.
Another fake paradise for tourists with lava rock from the Big Island. Another bit of Hawaii swallowed by capitalism and climate change.
I'm not painting everything about Lahaina as it was as perfect. Front Street was an often gaudy display of brand names and hucksters out to shovel in the tourist dollars. And of course the politics of Hawaii are incredibly complex and fraught in so many ways. I'm just a mainlander haole. I will never live on the islands, despite my family there constantly asking me to move. But I've spent more time there than anywhere I haven't lived, almost all of that time in West Maui.
My mom works in a building that is not there anymore. She just described that job to me as "the last job she'll ever have" as she's 79 and very happy with working two days a week selling t-shirts to cruise ship people. My brother has worked in a gallery on front street for the last ten years.
I don't know. A city of almost 15,000 permanent residents is just gone. 50 or so are confirmed dead, in some horrific circumstances from what I hear.
My mom says people are just walking around with thousand-yard-stares, aimless, clutching cell phones trying to get signal (there isn't any, but you can get lucky and get a call through. Some texts are going in but not out.)
So I don't know folks. Keep those people in your thoughts. If you can donate, I think this may be a good place because it's going to lots of local orgs on the ground: https://www.hawaiicommunityfoundation.org/maui-strong
I keep thinking of new sad things.
Anyway I'm going to leave you with a picture I took while strolling down Front Street one evening.
