Looking at the Next Episode

Episodes 21 and 22 are done by Director Ryuta Tasaki. I just wrote that “Gavv” has a director rotation between Sugihara, Shibasaki, and Morota… but sometimes guest directors come in to help out, like Director Kamihoriuchi did for episodes 11 and 12. It’s also been announced that Director Tasaki will direct the pilot of the new series “Number One Sentai Gozyuger”. (You should definitely watch the show’s trailer, too!) You’re probably wondering, “So, when did you film it?”, but this sort of thing was possible because “Gavv” is filmed ahead of time compared to previous years. It was after the end of “Gotchard” and before he began preparing for the new Sentai season. I secretly wished that he did the arc to broadcast after this one, which would make it “Super Tasaki Time” (one hour of non-stop Tasaki direction)… it’s unfortunate.

Speaking of Director Tasaki, he has directed several pilot episodes for the Kamen Rider and Sentai series. [TN: i actually noticed this while making his wiki page. he’s directed so many pilots and just ducked out for most of the show] Especially many in the Heisei Kamen Rider series: Agito, Ryuki, 555, Den-O, Kiva, Decade, Double, OOO, Gaim, Drive, Build, and Zi-O. The cast members who were raised on Heisei Rider are also growing in numbers, so I say, “Director Tasaki is coming; good luck!”.

What does a pilot director do? They attend the cast auditions, meet with them, and do rehearsals (?). Throughout the year, they are the one in charge of decisions on art direction, sets, props, clothes… basically anything. They take about twice as much time filming the pilot compared to any other set of two episodes. The pilot director for “Gavv” is Director Sugihara. They guide the young cast members, so they are someone we need to trust.

“Gavv” is already at episode 20, so while they say that Director Tasaki “really feels like a visitor”, he filmed fairly important moments in the story. He spoke highly of Hidekazu Chinen and Yusuke Hino’s performances. Yay! Next episode, some kind of strange bitter Gavv will appear. Please look forward to the first and last Tasaki episodes.

The Episode in Short

Thank you for watching episode 20! Last episode covered the fierce battle between Gavv and Vram, and this time, they finally break into the Dark Snack factory!

It’s been four episodes since Vram first transformed, but we’ve now reached the apex episode of Vram’s main arc. “Gavv’s” main director, Teruaki Sugihara, was in charge of episode 20, which reaches a main turning point in the story.

This undercover drama could have only been made by Director Sugihara, the leader of creating the Granute world! And he showed a pronounced human drama between Shoma and Rakia.

Episode 20’s audio commentary done by Rakia’s actor Kohei Shoji and Director Sugihara has been released on Toei Tokusatsu Fan Club. There are many behind-the-scenes stories they talk about that haven’t been written here, so those interested should definitely check it out!

What Is Lage9’s Name?

Because of the battle with Shoma last episode, the pudding wavers, or rather Rakia’s heart does. Then Vram’s creator, Nyelv, comes to Rakia’s hideout to give him a Gochizo.

The second Nyelv-made Gochizo is the “PuruJelly Gochizo”.

Its slightly smug-looking appearance similar to the Doppudding Gochizo is cute. Ayu Shoji recorded its cool female voice.

Shoma’s red bean soup Gochizo scouts out Rakia and leads Shoma to confront him again. Shoma brings Rakia outside to show what the captive Takeshi’s parents are feeling as they search for their son.

Rakia was troubled by what Shoma said last time, and now finally makes up his mind.

It’s an important scene where Rakia, once shown as an enemy, joins hands with Shoma for the first time, so the pilot director Sugihara was assigned to be in charge of this very significant moment in the story. Director Sugihara put passion into the direction, and he retook it over and over again before moving on.

Shoma had a family member die because of the Stomach Company just like Rakia did, and he has special feelings toward Rakia since he’s also a Granute. Because of Shoma, the feelings of wanting him to stop what he’s doing and turn back reached him in this scene. Shoji’s performance of Rakia conveying his true emotions back to Shoma was also impressive.

And he finally tells Shoma his real name. The name “Rakia Amarga” was revealed last week in the article, but this scene is the first where he actually calls himself by it, and it’s packed with emotion…!

Big Dark Snack Factory Break-in!

It was also mentioned in last week’s “Looking at the Next Episode”, but another reason that we asked the pilot director Teruaki Sugihara to direct episode 20 is that there’s a break-in to the Granute world. He’d always wanted to do that in “Gavv”. There was a feeling of tension that makes your palms sweaty!

Previously, the problem of how to open the door into the other world was an obstacle. Does it need a blood relative of the Stomach family? Shoma gets by the security and the door is opened.

In the same unexpected place as the door system, there’s a working toilet with an automatic sensor. The tension, relief, and the toilet seat’s smile were wonderfully explosive. As you’d expect from the director. By the way, the opening and closing isn’t automatic. It’s remote controlled by the assistant director. They have perfect timing!

It’s the second time since episode 1 that we’ve seen the dimension nicknamed “door space”. It connects the two worlds of the humans and Granutes, and seems to randomly connect to anywhere in the human world with a countless amount of doors. There are still many mysteries…

For the filming, it was of course shot live on a green screen, but there are also real doors made by the artists. The assets (CG space) themselves have a complex structure, so it also seems difficult to film, but Director Sugihara originally proposed the idea for this realm, and he did well when he shot footage in episode 1, so this episode could also use it abundantly!

It wasn’t part of the same scene that was filmed, but this valuable off-camera photo with all of the Stomach family actors and Chinen was taken on the same filming day and set!

They have a cold-blooded relationship in the show, but what a kind world. If there were a parallel universe like this… (cries)

Mask-off action on the way there! Rakia’s big-brother energy in taking on the guards in hand-to-hand combat is very reassuring! Shoma’s memory flashing at this moment is also interesting…

And naturally this lady was waiting for them. The factory’s boss, Miss Glotta—Glotta Stomach—makes an appearance.

Jelly Vram and Serious Grotta

At the end of the fierce battle in the factory, the setting changes and they go to a live concert somewhere. Since the doors can be connected to anywhere, we had a lot of freedom when searching for a filming location. At the time we were filming, it was sometimes hot outside and we could do action indoors, so we decided on a concert hall which would draw attention.

They also helped in the last episode, and the concert venue guests here are played by TTFC (Toei Tokusatsu Fan Club) members. It was filmed a considerable amount of time before broadcasting, so they were all definitely surprised when they saw Vram’s appearance!

By the way, the hip-hop artist seen here is a fictional group called the “koiki boys” (Laughs). Even the song that played during this scene is a composition by TEEDA called “Home town”. If you’re interested, please go check it out!

The posters were made by the art department too. It’s elaborate!

And now Glotta’s monster form appears for the first time this episode! You can see the difference in Glotta, who’s already incredibly strong in her human form. Gavv and Vram can’t match her strength even when they’re working together, she’s suuuuuuuper powerful!

Her monster design is based on a sea monster from Scandinavian folklore, the Kraken. The character has roots in Scandinavia like Jeebh and Shita’s “Hati and Sköll”.

The molds were made with a lot of care and detail. In order to match the tall stature of Machi Chitose, who plays her human form, two kinds of shoes were made—one kind with tall soles for close-ups, and one kind that’s easy to move in for fight scenes.

Thanks to them, her appearance is beautiful and the whole body’s balance is very good! The action director Fujita looked at the finished model, and he said that it’s more complete than most female monster form models in past generations.

Vram uses a new ability in order to fight the strong enemy Glotta. He uses the “PuruJelly Gochizo” received from Nyelv at the start, and transforms into the Jelly Custom!

The English word for Rakia’s motif animal is “jellyfish”! Jelly is translucent like a jellyfish! Jelly was chosen for its deep relationship to Lage9!

The full pink body with a cherry flavor gives a fairly strong impression. The Gochizo design is like that too, but the pale pink in the upper layer of the two-layered jelly is like Bavarian cream. (The Rider form introduction accidentally became a snack report, haha)

As always, Action Director Butsuda’s transformation sequence was full of surprises. Unlike the pudding, the reversed trapezoid-shaped jelly lid is torn open, going completely opposite of my expectations…!

In accordance with to Director Sugihara and Action Director Fujita’s plans, Vram Jelly Custom’s special ability is the one to turn invisible when the belt is operated.

The power isn’t unconditional. There’s the cost of his heart being stopped in his invisible state. I thought, it’s not just to be strong; Fujita is truly skilled at managing logic and balance.

He thinks over Glotta’s fighting style and personality very thoroughly while reflecting on it, and some pro-wrestling components are actually sprinkled in. According to what I’ve heard, this was used because Machi Chitose likes wrestling (Laughs).

At the height of the battle, Hanto arrives and witnesses what’s happening.

He sees his partner working alongside someone who was previously an opponent, and he wears the expression of a married woman during relationship difficulties, like, “Who the hell is that woman?!”… setting aside that joke, Hanto hears Shoma’s true identity, which Shoma could never tell him about, coming from Glotta.

This event will make big waves in the story. Please look forward to how their relationship turns out in the future!

Arc: Unfortunately after a week off for everything anyway, another recap. Nakamura Ichiro has been transferred again, and is now chief of the Sambin Island SKIP branch, struggling with both the heat and the personality of MarinePi, the local AI Robot. The branch is really just a resort for SKIP personnel, and Nakamura recognises his placement means he'll never be back on active duty. He's stressed over things in Hoshimoto after Trigelos appeared, and has been briefed on Onyx at least. Arc hasn't been seen since the battle, but MarinePi isn't worried, seeing as Arc already disappeared once when battling Hellnarak's forces. Nakamura briefly imagines Arc coming to the resort to recover from his battle, but forgets the delusion, remembering one had affected Hoshimoto recently. He also only has vague memories of the period where Kaiju and SKIP disappeared, but feels like he remembers a Black Arc appeared. Nakamura and MarinePi discuss the rumours of the skills of the members of Hoshimoto SKIP. Nakamura decides he can find some meaning in his position if he can support the Hoshimoto branch members.

Gavv: Shoma and Sachika are attending the Mochi Pounding, when Sachika overheard some women discussing the disappearance of Takeshi, the Mitarai Family's son, and goes to.ask about it as she's acquainted with them. A bird Granute is annoyed to only get paid one Dark Treat for his haul, but gets to work, Nyelv thinks he'll be a good lure for Red Gavv, so he can showcase his new weapon. Shoma tells Hanto about Takeshi, and learns from him of the recent mass disappearance cases, and both go out to investigate separately. Lage9 targets now a scam countering seminar, and is then one of the people Shoma asks about Takeshi, showing no interest, another person mentions that an friend's daughter also disappeared recently. Lage9 wonders how much more Presses he'll be forced to collect, when Nyelv approaches, not interested in his harvest, but wanting him to do an additional job. When Lage9 shows an interest in which job will benefit him morez Nyelv or Lango's, Nyelv is interested to see another, more real side of Lage9. He wants him to hunt Gavv and Valen, when Lage9 complains it will be a tough job he's told the reward will match, be it Dark Treats or, he guesses, something Lage9 wants, as that gets his attention, Nyelv considers the deal done and presents his new weapon. Sachika has gone to ask Takeshi's father, learning he was going to Tennis Practice after school the day he vanished. Hanto goes to the theatre Lage9 hit, and learns that separately an employee disappeared. Sachika calls Shoma saying she's going to the park, before her phone goes dead, and Hanto calls Shoma about the new lead, all the disappeared have similar traits of kindness and not being likely to disappear without notice. The Granute eats the Dark Treat, and gets hunting. Sachika confirms Takeshi was at practice that day, and wonders what next when a lady loses her scarf and helps retrieve it, before the lady can Press her though Shoma arrives, she leaves hurriedly, Shoma and Hanto both noticing and Shoma sending a Gochizo after, but Hanto's first instinct was to confront her there, but accepts Shoma doesn't want to risk Sachika. Privately though he's having doubts about Shoma's motives since he refused to go to the Granute World, aware he's hiding something, and Shoma admits to himself he just didn't want Sachika to know who he was. As the Gochizo observes, the Granutez frustrated, spots Lage9, and thinking him a human, does the same trick, Lage9 is annoyed but retrieves the scarf, at which point the Granute tries to press him and Gochizo goes back to alert Shoma, Lage9 breaks free, and decides to use her. Shoma leaves immediately after getting home as the Gochizo grabs him, and meets with Hanto, the Granute approaching them and revealing herself. Gavv and Valen Bushel engage her. Using KickinGummy, Shoma uses the Xmax as a springboard to launch Valen at the flying opponent, and together they ready their finishes, but stop when Lage9 walks in front. Gavv recognises him, and Lage9 makes a point of knowing who they are, and reveals himself as a Granute, then equips the VrastumGear, and uses the DopPudding Gochizo to become Kamen Rider Vram Pudding Custom. The presence of another Kamen Rider is surprising, and he makes clear he's their enemy, and does an admirable job of handling both with ease.

Boonboomger: It's New Year, Mira shows her calligraphy, and Jou brings a delivery of fish sent from his grandfather, a fishmonger in Hokkaido. Maimi tells Shirabe she found nothing suspicious, when asked did the documents could be altered she tells Shirabe to worry less and have more faith in the ISA. Grantz and Spinder discuss Tokoyari's as scheming, but no they'll be able to take over despite it just like always. Boonboom made a special treasure boat curry using the Scallops, Sakito and ByunD come in looking serious, with news of the BBG. The Sanseaters are having their own holiday gathering when it's crashed by Treasure Chest Kuruma, who steals their holiday gifts. A fellow Cleaner has confirmed Spinder's manipulation of the ISA, in addition Genba's father had a bunch of new charges suddenly raised against him, seemingly reprisal for Disrace, meaning for anything they do to actually matter Spinder has to be taken down, when Shirabe is asked she passes the buck to Chassiro's investigation, but he hasn't checked in for a while, until he reports the Kurumajin, and we see he's with Tokoyari. The Kurumajin is stealing everyone's treasures, the Sanseaters guess Grantz made him, the Boonboomgers arrive to engage, unaware a certain man in blue is watching. Defeated thanks to the Kurumajin's defence, it then demands treasure, Chasshiro arrives to show the Boonboom Changer and their treasure, and gives his up. Maimi is observing as everyone is shocked, flashback shows Tokoyari demanded proof from him he was going to side with the ISA over the Boonboomgers. He draws a gun telling them there's no hope of resisting the Hashiliens and if they continue to fight the Boonboomgers will become enemies to the world, Taiya naturally chooses that anyway, impressing the man in blue watching, and as battle recommences Chasshiro leaves. When the Kurumajin tries to steal the treasure again, the man joins the fray, as he is GokaiBlue. Confusingly, Boonboom and ByunD know about the Gokaigers, but Shirabe doesn't. BunRed and GokaiBlue do some good fighting together, before GokaiBlue forcibly releases the treasures and recovers the Boonboom Changer, which becomes a Ranger Key he uses to become BunBlue, borrowing both Change Axes to demolish the troops, then as GokaiBlue joins the Boonboomgers in defeating the enemy. He returns the Boonboom Changer to Taiya. Before Taiya can really question him, Yarucar has made the Kurumaju, and Boonboomger Robo and ByoonByoom Mach Robo engage. Using the Galleon Key GokaiBlue uses GokaiCross to Gokai Custom Mach Robo, basically turning it into GokaiOh, and together they defeat the Kurumaju. Taiya goes back to GokaiBlue, Joe Gibken helped them because it's what his captain would have done as they were willing to make themselves enemy to the world, he also gives a pendant, a delivery from a certain princess, before leaving. Satisfied Chasshiro has cast off the Boonboomgers, Tokoyari tells him to get to work on his proposal, while telling Maimi to watch him. Taiya gives the pendant to Mai, it's Nicola's, but what the message from Planet Trikle is is hard to says and everyone is more concerned with Chassiro's betrayal. Boonboom discovers Taiya's accounts have been seized, now controlled by Lightning Tech, revealing his mentor's betrayal to Taiya for the first time.

Looking at the Next Episode

Happy new year. Did you eat many delicious things over the New Year? Whether it be food samples or documents, in preparatory meetings or on filming sets, it seems like the weight for all of the producers in the snack-filled “Gavv” has increased… We’ll keep working just as hard on “Gavv” this year!

Lage9 has begun to actually try. I wrote it last time, but Director Shibasaki focused a lot on the transformation scene and action. A unique point about Kamen Rider Vram is that it’s a Granute transforming. We started by asking, “Would they put the transformation belt in the mouth on their stomach?”. The action also makes the best of Lage9’s special traits. Action Director Fujita expressed his merciless strength with camerawork which heavily used slow-motion. It has unmatched coolness! The brashness of Eitoku’s suit acting is also wonderful.

Next is the pudding party. The subtitle also references pudding, because “caramel”… The names “Vram” and “Vrastam Gear” (the transformation belt) originate from the word “frustum” [the bottom part of a cone shape]. Picture a cup container of pudding— that’s a frustum. The idea for the name came from Shinichi Kaneko of Ishimori Productions. He also came up with the name “Granute” and the crab Granute’s name “Rojo”. He’s full of extensive knowledge and imagination. Mr. Kaneko will immediately tell you which Rider and scene it is when the specific topic comes up at script meetings. He’s so amazing!

And then Vram’s transformation scene. The giant pudding being made, and the spoons attaching themselves at the end, came from the genius imagination of the special effects director, Hiroshi Butsuda. The Tokusatsu Research Institute’s CG team was in charge of that transformation scene. I feel like the finished scene is a complete work of art comprised of the knowledge and ideas of many people. Everyone is putting all their effort into this in 2025 as well, and we’ll power-up to finish this!

Okay, I’ve already done everything I wanted to do. There’s a theory that you forget everything you didn’t finish at the end of the year, but let’s go look at the things left over from the start of 2025!

That’s right, Hapipare is naturally decorated for New Year’s too.

I think there will be more interesting things in the program in the future, too!

Creepy-crawly Granutes!

The hunting ground Lage9 chose this week was a “bank fraud prevention seminar”. His eyes are both perceptive and elegant… it’s truly amazing.

It’s ironic that Lage9 kidnaps them and makes them falsely happy in a place where they’re meeting in order to not be deceived… even though he may have a secret motive other than collecting Human Presses.

And this time Nyelv, the one who found Lage9, comes to him with his own invention. Lage9 acted humble in front of the Stomach family members until now, but Nyelv liked him for his real, ruder personality. Good thing Nyelv didn’t get angry at him! (Can he even get angry…?)

Shoji and Takizawa are both people who can play an incredible range of personalities, and the two of them are humorous people when they’re not in character. The Stomach family cast members have all appeared on the Super Hero Time TikTok channel, so if you’re interested, please give that a look!

By the way, Shoji is good at turning off the highlights in his eyes (Laughs).

This is from “Kiramager” episode 38, “Watching My Uncle’s Moon” (the title should be enough). In this scene, where Shoji’s character Takamichi is fascinated by an illusion, the highlights of his eyes were erased in post-production.

(Huh? What’s this mysterious scene? He’s doing El’Dunnade in front of Glajewel… Those interested should check TTFC!) [i haven’t watched kiramager please forgive me if these make no sense]

If he had an opportunity to be a victim of Illusia again, now being able to erase highlights by himself, the editing team’s workload would really decrease (Laughs).

Well, I said that half-jokingly, but Shoji is as conscious as the production team is of how he should move in relation to the camera to create the picture they are aiming for. I really do have the feeling that he’s good at finding how it will look when he stands, tilts his head, or touches his hat in a certain way.

What?! Is he really the same person whose eyes were blinded by the shininess of his own clothing during his first transformation?? (Mysterious laugh [?])

I conspired with Steel, who was also starting out at the time, to take a photo. So there is such a thing as hiding your own expression… (Laughs).

Including those sorts of fun things, it’s good to have Shoji back on the set, now in a more mentor-ish position and with four years of experience!

And speaking of people happy to have a reliable bodyguard appear, we have this episode’s disturbance, the Granute Chor. Their human form is portrayed by Nanami Kameda, and the voice of their Granute form is Tomoaki Maeno!

Their human form has an elegant femininity, but when they return to their Granute form, they have amazing roughness. Mr. Maeno made a lot of ad-libs in his performance. There will be heated scenes with the human form portrayed by Ms. Kameda in the next episode too, so please look forward to that!

By the way, Chor’s strategy is a simple one where they turn the people who catch their scarf flying away into Human Presses, one-by-one. It’s definitely too slow and dull of a method for Lage9, but Chor feels like this is a reliable method for everyone else, and somehow ends up supporting him (Laughs).

Finally Transform! Kamen Rider Vram

The scene where Lage9 transforms into Vram for the first time. Director Shibasaki insisted on showing him transforming from his Granute appearance in the first transformation.

So this means he…

takes off his black cloak

removes his human disguise and changes to Granute form

equips the belt

and transforms

Taking off clothes and then putting things on? It’s a very elaborate sequence.

Eitoku portrays both his Granute form and Vram, so the stop-change cut (filming actors in the same position before and after transforming) of the transformation was an Eitoku relay. Actually, we’ve already done this plenty of times with Vice (Laughs).

The mask’s field of vision is restricted during the listless transformation pose, so it must be hard to twirl the hair…!
