This felt familiar.

Kara wondered how many times she could pull off the hapless civilian act before it started to become suspicious. Three times was likely pushing it, but there were only so many alleys, and the cape came with its own particular problems of late. She was quick; if worse came to worst, she could easily zip away and change. Right?

“Oh, gosh, I’m– wow, sorry! I really didn’t mean to, just–” She stumbled her way out of little shop door, conveniently catching an angry-faced man (with a handlebar mustache of all things) with the door. She would’ve been able to hear him from inside, even without her super hearing. ‘They don’t belong here,’ he’d shouted, purple in the face, his hands wrapped around a sign quoting some famous scholar or another.

Maybe Kara would’ve let it go. It’s not like she hadn’t heard it before; ‘go home, roach’ was becoming increasingly common. She was doing what she could, and granting attention to it only seemed to exacerbate the problem. Besides, they weren’t exactly in the best part of town, he didn’t have much of an audience. Except Laura Kinney. Which was significant, significant in ‘we’ve fought together in National City’ ways. Significant in that she had a look in her eye like she might just castrate him right there on the street corner if Kara didn’t do something.

“I’m just so clumsy, you’re really gonna hurt tomorrow, aren’t you?” Smacking him too hard with the heavy wood door. The noise from the bar spilling out onto the street almost drown out the man’s groan. His response was to roll sideways, and Kara instead turned to Laura, grin possibly giving her away. “I think he’s okay right there, what do you think?”

You’ve got a habit of finding trouble, Miguel. It was something his mother had said once, exhaustion clinging to her very bones as she rubbed at the back of her neck. It had been just before Alchemax staked their claim on him, when he was still just a little kid whose life was his own. His mother hadn’t hated him yet, and his stepfather was still an ass but he was an ass that Miguel had been sure was responsible for both his and Gabri’s existence. (He still didn’t know if that was preferable to knowing the truth.) 

He couldn’t remember precisely what he’d done, if it was the time he’d pulled the dresser down on Gabriel or if he’d accidentally spilled his stepfather’s whiskey down the drain, but he remembered the way she’d looked at him. He remembered thinking he’d never seen her so tired, remembered aching despite his youth. He’d wanted to make her okay, but he had a habit of finding trouble and neither of them knew how to stop that.

The habit had followed him into the past, even if his mother hadn’t. For a moment, Miguel had thought that he’d left it behind, back in 2099 with Gabri and Jess and Kasey and the rest. But then strong hands were wrapping around his arms and someone was yanking him into an alley and Miguel knew he wouldn’t die here but that didn’t mean he wanted to get mugged. Especially not by... 

He paused, blinking at her. Young woman, mid-twenties at the oldest, and there was something strangely familiar about her. For a beat, Miguel only stared. And then his mouth caught up to the situation, and that was never a good thing. “I don’t really like Girl Scout Cookies,” he said slowly. “Those minty ones leave a bad taste in my mouth. Don’t get what the fuss about them is.”

“No. How could you tell?” His stare looks up when Laura walks in the room. Everyone else was asleep, at least they should be. Alex didn’t expect anyone to find him lingering outside, maybe at any other time he would have released a plasma blast into the sky — needing to just let it out sometimes. He always remembers Scott’s voice in the back of his head reminding him to take care of it before they go somewhere. Now? Alex should be more careful about his choices. The last time he spontaneously used his powers it got him arrested, but this won’t keep him from using them. They’re part of Alex, and no matter what happens embraces it — too much probably. “I’m guessing you can’t either? There’s a lot on my mind I guess. Do you want to join me?” He asks while patting the empty patch of grass next to him.

Gabby stood outside an apartment building, unsure of how she got there. They’d been taking her somewhere, and she’d managed to escape them for a moment. To get away for now. Her feet were bare, and her body felt as though she’d been running. Everything felt wrong. Something in her said that this was home but how could she have a home if she had always been at the facility? Always been one of their weapons? She didn’t have a home, she didn’t get a home. Laura. Find Laura. Gabby swallowed hard. She had to find Laura.

Following her instincts, she went inside and walked up the stairs until she felt a floor call to her. Then a door. She knocked, hands shaking like she was nervous. Why was she nervous? What was she doing? You shouldn’t be here. The door opened and there stood X23. Laura. Gabby didn’t know what to do as she was embraced. As she felt a kiss being pressed to her forehead. You shouldn’t be here. None of this is real, remember? But it felt real... Was it a test?
