Letting my K-pop playlist run when I've left the auto-generated English subtitles switched on is always... enlightening 😂

Podcast is "iPod" and "broadcast".
dead metaphors are really interesting honestly and specifically i’m interested in when they become malapropisms
like, the concept being, people are familiar with the phrase and what people use it to mean metaphorically, but it’s not common knowledge anymore what the metaphor was in literal reference to. people still say “toe the line” but don’t necessarily conjure up the image of people standing at the starting line of a race, forbidden from crossing over it. people still say “the cat is out of the bag” without necessarily knowing it’s a sailors’ expression referring to a whip being brought out for punishment. some metaphors are so dead we don’t even know where they come from; like, there are ideas about what “by hook or by crook” references, but no one is entirely sure. nobody knows what the whole nine yards are.
and then you throw in a malaprop or a mondegreen or two, where because people don’t know what the actual words of the expression refer to, they’re liable to replace them with similar sounding words (see “lack toast and tolerant”). so we can literally go from a phrase referencing a common, everyday part of life to a set of unfixed, contextless sounds with a completely different meaning. that’s fascinating. what an interesting piece of the way language and culture are living, changing, coevolving things.
maybe part of the reason we can’t figure out where some phrases come from is that over time the words themselves have changed! one of the theories about “the whole nine yards” is that it’s a variant of “the whole ball of wax,” which some people further theorize was originally “the whole bailiwick,” meaning just “the whole area”! the addition of “nine yards” might be related to “dressed to the nines,” which might reference the fucking Greek muses! language is so weird and cool! (and I only know any idioms in two languages!)
the point is. I just came across the words “nip it in the butt” in a piece of published, professional fiction, and now I can’t stop giggling.

Year 1 - Summer - Barker (Peasant Chicken Farmer)
He may have left the army, but Lawrence never was one for work, or politics... he loves animals, so the farming life should suit him just fine.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
He gets settled into life nicely, selling eggs, making friends with the locals.Harald Bouldre doesn't seem to like him, but whatever! Like he cares what some old miner thinks of his life choices.
Tumblr media
Howwever, it's not long before he meets Primrose Mondegreen - and he's instantly smitten! She is beautiful, confident, musically talented... Maybe he made a mistake in quitting the army? He's lost his shot at winning her hand, now.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The feeling appears to be mutual, with Primrose falling for his charms immediately! He might not stand a chance at actually marrying her, but maybe he can still win the lady's heart... or at least bed her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Egg production is slow and rent is due, so Lawrence heads into the forrest to collect fruit and do some hunting.
Tumblr media
After killing a deer, though, he's sick to his stomach. Such a beautiful beast, slain by his hand... Lawrence was never meant for violence.
Tumblr media
That sick feeling in his stomach isn't just guilt though - its the poisonous mushrooms he attempted to forrage in the woods! And some flu he picked up from the chickens. Lawrence heads home, hoping he will feel better after a nice long rest and a hot bath. But alas...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
...he perishes :( a sad end to a short life!

Shitty Cape Idea #3: Lady Mondegreen
Fucks with people’s ability to process language and expressed emotion. Rather than creating illusions or messing with the stimuli people receive, she scrambles people’s ability to interpret such stimuli. The specifics of this can depend on how she’s applying her ability: she could focus on messing up processing of others emotions, so that you see others laughs as sneers, interpret all explanations as condescension, etc. Or she could focus more on the language processing and make everything you hear and read get interpreted as word salad: “come to the base” gets heard as “Compton head case,” “between Garey and White” becomes “be seen carrion blight,” etc. By mixing and varying the effect, she can make groups of enemies unable to coordinate and/or suddenly angry and distrustful of one another.
Villain mercenary, often gets employed by villain groups who are expecting large groups to come after them. Triggered as a result of a mass bullying campaign similar to what Taylor faced, one that got its momentum from her not getting that she was being bullied at first, leading to more mockery and obvious cruelty. Felt incredible frustration that all her bullies were so united in hating her (so many of them shouldn’t even have gotten along with each other!), got a power that ensures her enemies are at each others throats.

Ultimate Word Tournament!
mondegreen (English, Bone Apple Tea Dialect) [ˈmɑndəɡɹiːn] a misunderstood or misinterpreted word or phrase resulting from a mishearing of the lyrics of a song. Mondegreen is itself a mondegreen of a line from the Scottish ballad "The Bonny Earl of Murray", with the line "layd him on the green" misheard as "Lady Mondegreen."
Verfremdungseffekt (German) [vɜːˈfɹɛmduŋsəˌfɛkt] Bertolt Brecht's "alienating or distancing effect"; when you are constantly aware that you are watching a play and can never achieve catharsis or empathy, instead being encouraged to analyze and feel empowered to make political or social change.

One especially interesting part of many a Banana Splits concert
Generally about two-thirds of the way into the second part of a concert appearance by The Banana Splits "themselves," especially in smaller, more intimate locales such as the small-town "opera houses" (usually applied with facetiousness implied), there's bound to be something of an ice-breaker segment leading into the finale, sort of a way to start winding things down.
Bingo will be imagined leading this segment off with some spiel opening to the effect of "Now, I guess you're wondering about the importance of the next segment to hand ...," bound to include Drooper's superhero pastiche of "Super Drooper" made even more hilarious with the transformation background being ABBA's "Super Trooper," which some in the audience have probably mondegreened as "Super Drooper" and his ur-cape being festooned with rhinestones for hilarity, prompting Snorky to make some silly commentary about the whole in his Harpo Marx manner (with Drooper interpreting the whole, inevitably).
Followed by Bingo (himself the Splits' drummer) inviting select audience members to try and pull off a "rimshot" drum number better than Bingo (again, with hilarity being the object--and quite often with contestants getting a T-shirt as a thank-you gift).
Fleegle, not to be outdone, puts in his quarter (bombastically, of course) by as much extending thanks as going into the audience and getting into such antics as kissing random audience members (especially 'tween-type kids and middle-aged ladies), exchanging banter-filled humour and randomly handing out Banana Splits souvenirs and then some (in some instances, awarding one audience member a substantial-sized summer sausage).
Lest Snorky be left out, his place in these antics is to not only award a special Banana Splits prize pack (including T-shirt, satin jacket, backpack and travel set, announced by a rather substantial trumpet blast), but also select random visitors to be their guests at the apres-concert party backstage).
All in all, things are bound to be rather interesting as Banana Splits concerts start winding down and going into the finale, which will be a reprise of "The Tra-La-La Song (One Banana, Two Banana)" and a special end-of-show working of "We're The Banana Splits," followed by the group hug and the ur-Benediction.

What did he look like before a beloved family fantasy classic appeared in theaters and gave him a whole new face?  Better not to ask.  Better not to even wonder.  He is now who he has always been, who he will always be, even as he watches the ebb and flow of the collective consciousness and waits, as he always does, to be flensed and made anew, reskinned as someone he wasn’t a moment before.  But once the edit is done, he has never changed.  You see?  You understand?
No?  We will summarize.
Indigo is the small god of misunderstandings and malapropisms (although not, it should be stressed, of mondegreens: the Lady Mondegreen does not share her narrow protectorate).  He guards the definition of things, both technical and colloquial, and he will not hesitate to correct, although his corrections are essentially kind.  He would rather improve than embarrass, and he often speaks in privacy, through the mouth of a beloved friend or through distant memories of dictionary pages.
Confused?  Not sure what you said was what you meant?  Fumbling for meaning?  Indigo is with you.  He will always care more for your wounded heart than for your words, as long as your intent is generous.  He does not think well of the cruel, or of the uncharitable.  He will aid them as little as he possibly can.
But he is a god and we are merely men, and he cannot always choose who he comes to aid.  Remember this, when he seems to extend his hand to the undeserving.  Remember that we do not, will not, and cannot always understand.
Indigo will understand it for us.

My media this week (14-20 Jul 2024)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
these eps are not getting any more hinged i will tell you that for free
📚 STUFF I READ 📚
😍 Baby Steps (BlueSimplicity) - 115K, stucky - really excellent fic with Steve having to step up and take care of a de-aged Bucky, which he fails hard at initially but then sorts himself out and learns to rely on his team. Just so, so good!
😊 Triple Sec (TJ Alexander, author; Jeremy Carlisle Parker, narrator) - I liked all the characters but found myself not really connecting with any of them so I kept putting this down to prioritize other things and took me forever to finish; @81% made decision to get ebook to complete and then when the hold finally came in I finished it in like an hour. AND I really liked that last 20% a lot -- Mel felt a lot less annoying to me. So for this one, audio was not the format for me, though I don't have any complaints about the narrator. I ultimately did enjoy the plot overall even as Mel kind of got on my nerves.
😊 An Assassination on the Agenda: A Lady Hardcastle Mystery, Book 11 (T.E. Kinsey, author; Elizabeth Knowelden, narrator) - Flo & Emily, always a romp. This is a series the reverse of the above, where I don't think I'd enjoy them nearly as much if reading text.
Descendants of Cyrano (letmetellyouaboutmyfeels) - 55K Buddie canon divergent where they work out their feelings via D&D - super entertaining. Never has the tag 'the rituals are intricate' been more appropriate
💖 +67K of shorter fic so shout out to these I really loved 💖💖
Collection: Corroded Coffin Fest (thisapplepielife) - Stranger Things: Corroded Coffin, sometimes Steddie, 24K (ongoing) - a collection of loosely interconnected 1000 word stories mainly about CC & its members - I really enjoyed this author's vision of the band. Also hitting that 1000 word precisely every time is an achievement.
