It is a book! I keep meaning to read it because there's something in the Romanian DNA that demands to see what foreigners say and write about us, but I haven't gotten around to it yet.
It's really promising that the author took Vlad (aka, the Impaler, aka the historical source for Dracula), genderbent him and called him "Lada".
"Lada" is a word that exists in Romanian, but not as a name. It literally means "the crate".
I just recently found out that And I darken exists and is an immense piece of cultural appropriation. Like
All the good reviews: English speakers
Most of the bad reviews: romanians pointing out how they butchered our national history, a great hero, how Islamophobic it is and how no one cares bcs it's a " white" country
I haven't read the book, but the summary makes it obvious the author didn't bother with a Google search, not to mention a sensitivity reader.
But it's honestly a little bit hilarious how
English tumblr : stanning the devil crate
Romanian Tumblr: untranslatable memes roasting the fuck out of the story

I know nothing about this... book?

Hey, Conqueror's Saga fandom!
We have a wiki, but it needs a lot of work! When I found it, there were only four or five pages. I've written pages for Radu, Cyprian, and a stub template, so now we're up to eight, but it's still not a lot.
If you're interested in the series, or knowledgable about it, this is your time to shine! Check out the wiki, improve it, talk to me and give feedback! Anything is appreciated!

the Vlad Tepes but YA girl book is called "and I darken". The last time I heard about it, it was dragged through the mud for the clichée strong girl and disregard of Romanian history and culture beginning with the cover.
Oh yeah I saw, the person I reblogged the tag from has already reblogged it back to show me.
Tbh I'm stuck on "Lada Dragwlya".

Not to mention that Kiersten White tried to come up with this ultra-feminist genderbent Vlad Dracula just to:
Name her Ladislav. First of all, that's not even a Romanian name. Second of all, that's not a female form of name Vlad. It's a male form of the name. Open your damn Google.
Shorten her name to Lada. Which means a crate in Romanian. Yep, Vlad the Impaler is a goddamn crate.
Reduce the richness and complexity of Vlad's character to a permanently violent and enraged individual. Not doing any justice to Vlad. Not doing any justice to women.
Also, this comes from the synopsis of Now I Rise (#2):
"After failing to secure the Wallachian throne, Lada is out to punish anyone who dares to cross her blood-strewn path. Filled with a white-hot rage, she storms the countryside with her men, accompanied by her childhood friend Bogdan, terrorizing the land."
Basically, the national hero of Romania and one of the few historical protectors of Wallachia reduced to someone who terrorises that very same country.
Currently reading The Conqueror's Saga by Kiersten White and I kind of want to pour bleach in my eyes? Like it literally spits on Romanian history in every single way imaginable. I do not even want to go into details because I would probably write a dissertation about this.
Meanwhile, the Americans are going all tHiS mAsTeRpIeCe HaS cHaNgEd My LiFe in Goodreads' comment section.

About “The Historian” (”Istoricul”) in half engleza half română
Istoricul is a novel about the chase of Dracula, or... Dracula chasing people, it depends of the context. Let me explain:
The main character, who has no name, finds an old book with nothing written on it but a huge xilogravură of a dragon (probabil din ordinul dragonului) which has a link with a two-side story: the one of professor Rossi, the one who starts the chasing, and the one of Paul and Helen, an historian and an anthropologist whom search for Rossi’s place when he dissapears and become part of this “Dracula hunting”.
Long story short: the descriptions of places and historical work is impecabil, as an historian I can tell the writer did a good job on researching (se pare că i-a trebuit zece ani să facă cercetările). Narrative has some issues, mostly because some chapters could have been deleted and the plot would be the same, and on the other side it has some unanswered questions like (SPOILER ALERT):
*How the heck Vlad got his head attached back to his body? Did it suffered some issues for being separated from the body for something about one or two months?
*How exactly Vlad became (da, this thing again) a VAMPIR? It is said there was some black, creepy witchy ritual behind but is never explained. Fail.
*How does Vlad can make a dude dissapear from his room in England to appear in Bulgary? No, seriously, is this a vampire power I didn’t know about?
*Isn’t he aware of Helen being his descendant? History doesn’t go very deep in real Vlad’s family relationships but I bet he would be interested on following his bloodline since, in this novel, he’s a (there’s no other word to describe it) huge nerd for History.
*What about the other “vampires”? The ones he created in order to manhunt the people he needed for his “evil plan” (BTW evil plan is having a personal assistant for his library... woooo diabolic).
*The “sultan’s order” prepared to chase him and avoid him of his “evil plan” is completely useless. Really, they can’t do a heck to help but provide some info to the main characters. And that’s it. Useless (anyway the only good thing is otomans aren’t portrayed as lovely heroes, at least not for too long).
*And the ending... Jesus Christ the ending was a magnificent piece of spurcăciune. De ce? De ce tu ai avut ce fă asta la papa Vlad?
I loved the book, even with the VAMPIR stuff in it (I mean, eu încă cred este o  mai bun creatură fantastică pentru Vlad ar fi un balaur), but this lack of necessary info and the ending killed the experience for me.
People of Romania, ați citit această carte?

Mehmed's laugh filled the room. It used to fill Radu, too, until he could feel it in his viens. But the feelings he had now were echoes of the ones he had before. He did not know if they would grow again.

Hii Yokannn! Do you have Goodreads or something? Or can you share the books that you've read so far? I've tried reading the Camelot book you're reading and I was hooked. And now I need to read more books but I don't know what book to read. Please please share the good books you've read 😁😁😁
Hi, nonnie!! 👋
I do have a goodreads, but I'm not sure it would help you much cause all my reviews are in Portuguese. 🤣🤣 BUT! If you enjoyed the Camelot book (so glad you did!! I loved that one, but the second book in the trilogy is not as good 🤣🤣 Have to be honest), I can rec you a few things!
The Conqueror's Saga by the same author of the Camelot Rising trilogy, Kiersten White! The first book is called And I Darken, the second is Now We Rise, the third is Bright We Burn. It is one of my all time favorite YA series. So unique! It's got a fantasy aspect to it, but it's actually historical lit. It's a retelling of the real story of Vlad the Impaler, the historical figure that inspired Count Dracula's tale. Except in this version, Vlad is a girl, Lada. The story follows her, her brother, Radu the Handsome (also a real figure) and the future emperor of the Ottoman Empire, Mehmed. Lada is nothing like you'd expect a princess to be, and it's absolutely fantastic. I love it with all my heart, seriously.
Another of my all time favorite YA series is Wolf by Wolf (and its sequel, Blood for Blood), by Ryan Graudin. Another historical fiction, except this one is a dystopian historical fiction, set in a 1956 world where the nazis won the war. It's so stunning and heart-breaking as you'd expect a story like that to be, but it's also beautiful. The main character is a Jewish girl who managed to escape a concentration camp where she was subjected to all manner of tests by the nazi scientists. It ended up giving her an ability, which she now uses as a part of the resistance.
Victoria Schwab (or V.E. Schwab) is my favorite contemporary author and I could rec everything she's ever written. Even the stuff I don't necessarily like is still great and gripping, like the Darker Shade of Magic trilogy. But my absolute favorite work by her is Vicious, which is not an YA book and it doesn't really have any romance, but it's so, so good! It's a kind of X-men-ish story, with people who develop super powers. And it's a story that pits two best friends with different world views against each other, and the really incredible part of the story is that there are no heroes here. They're both very much villains, or villanesque. The moral questions of the story are so great. And there is a sequel called Vengeful, also incredible. I also love, love, love Our Dark Duet. It's so unique! Ugh! Her books are great.
A book that seems to be really popular right now and I read a few years ago is The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller. Nonnie, it is PERFECTION. Seriously. I love it so, so, so much! It's a retelling of the Iliad and Achilles' saga, except it's told through Patroclus' POV. My heart. The writing is stunning and the story is just so, so good. Kinda heartbreaking if you know how it goes, but still amazing. Can't rec it more. And Circe, by the same author, is also fantastic!
I am currently making my way through a book called Blood and Honey, the second book of a series that started with Serpent and Dove. I LOVED the first, am not crazy about the second so far tho. But the first book is really great. There's magic and witches and witch hunters. And the main romance is to diiiie for! Slow burn, enemies to lovers! Ugh. Delicious.
These are some recs, anon! If you do pick any of these up, let me know how you like them! :) I love talking books! If you ever need more recs, let me know. 🤣🤣

I wonder what Bram Stoker wrote about Count Dracula in the universe of Kiersten White’s The Conqueror’s Saga.  Is he called Count Wampyr, as in initial drafts?  Is Dracula a woman?  Is he the proud descendant of the great Princess Lada Dracula, and does he give a speech about how even the women of the Dracula line were more fearsome warriors than anything the modern world has to offer?

hi i just wanted to say that i saw u read and i darken
and idk i mean u do u but a lot of romanians(me included)consider the author turned our language, history and culture into a joke and it's just another case of an american thinking that they can do zero (0) research about something and make a ya bestseller out of it.
i mean i love ur blog and imma still keep following but like..i'll def filter lada dracula or whatever the hell
even if that means i'll see less posts of alina (? )
btw this isn't like a callout bs or whatever i just wanted to inform you about the book. like this is as bad as lb and the gregverse if not worse
Oh, I’m sorry to hear that. I admit I don’t know much about the history of that particular region, but I am sorry that people feel that way.

I am trying to find out what I want to read next and I thought I would consult you since I value your bookish opinions very highly. I saw this question on a book blog that I follow, what are three of your favorite tropes and what are three books you feel do those tropes really well. If you do answer this thank you in advance!
Omg thanks, this is a GREAT question.
Okay, so for one, I really do enjoy a good old Hades and Persephone-style romance trope.  And one book that I think does this very well is Wintersong by S. Jae-Jones.  In this novel--which is a retelling of the Erlking legend, and focuses on a young 18th century composer who agrees to become the Goblin King’s bride in exchange for her sister’s freedom.  It’s actually quite dark and beautiful.
I also love the trope in which people have so much intense passion that they are unable to verbalize due to external reasons--basically, they’re soul mates, but they just can’t go there because of things out of their control and you feel that love but they won’t say anything.  And that’s basically the heart of Daisy Jones and The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid.  I’ve discussed it on here a lot, but it’s a novel about a fictional 70s rock band and why they broke up.  So good.
I also love a good antihero protagonist, and for that I’d recommend The Conqueror’s Sage by Kiersten White.  It’s an alt-history trilogy about Lada, who is actually a female version of Vlad Dracula.  The story is quite intense and one of the central themes is Lada’s struggle between her baser instincts as conqueror and her genuine love for her brother and her childhood friend (and her relationships with both of them are quite toxic, which complicates things).  You don’t often see this role played by women.
