Life was good for Luke. He was still the most respected swordsman at camp, the Hermes cabin was as energetic as ever, and he had been dating his longtime crush for months now. Everything was perfect.
“Hey Sparky.” Luke said as he walked into Y/N’s cabin without a second thought. She was still lying in bed, glaring at him with her E/C eyes that he loved so much.
“It’s six in the morning. Get out or be quiet.” Y/N waved him off but he was persistent.
“You promised to train with me.” Luke frowned, hurrying over to kneel beside Y/N’s bed.
“Tomorrow.” She muttered, closing her eyes so she could sneak in a moment more of sleep.
“You said that yesterday. And the day before. At least hold my water bottle!”
Y/N couldn’t resist Luke when he looked at her with those puppy eyes. Eventually, she found herself standing in the centre of the arena dressed in loosely fitting armour and holding a heavy sword. “I never agreed to this.” She muttered, furrowing her eyebrows.
She wasn’t even fully dressed, still in her pjs under the armour, while Luke was ready to go. He took a huge gulp of cold water from his bottle, grinning.
“Just one round, Sparky. Fight me like you mean it and I’ll let you sit out.”
But fighting Luke was never an easy feat. Five minutes later, Y/N was still locked in a complicated battle with her brown-haired sweetheart.
“Slow down, will you? I just woke up.” She muttered, sloppily blocking a blow that was aimed at her chest. Luke merely chuckled, swinging his weapon even faster.
“Sorry, Sparky. But I’ve got to train somehow.”
“By almost maiming your girlfriend?!” Y/N exclaimed as she ducked. She quickly rolled across the ground and stood up behind Luke.
“Yeah. Something like that.” He sent her a mischievous wink as he spun around, metal clashing against metal. Y/N scoffed, kicking his ankles. She liked to play dirty. In one of their first capture the flag matches, Y/N had bit Luke. And had drawn blood. That was the start to their close relationship.
“I’m tired, Luke.” She complained, slouching. “Let me rest.” Despite wanting to continue training, Luke let Y/N off easy. He knew he wouldn’t get another mock fight out of her in this state. She happily skipped over to the bench, lying down on it.
A ghost of a smile appeared on Luke’s lips as he stared at Y/N. Her head suddenly turned and Luke bashfully looked away. Nothing could make him shy… nothing but Y/N. She laughed at him, knowing the effect she had on Luke.
“I’m going to change. And maybe get some last-minute sleep. You wanna come or are you gonna stay here and train?” Y/N raised her eyebrows as she took her armor off. Luke was quick to drop his sword and unbuckle his chest-plate.
“I’ll come with.” He said. Y/N muffled her laughter and simply knocked Luke to the side with her hip.
“New kids sure are pouring in.” Y/N mumbled. Just yesterday, another boy had arrived. He was around Y/N and Luke’s age, which was uncommon for newcomers. How had he managed to avoid the monsters for so long?
“Remember when that girl tried flirting with me last week?” Luke asked, chuckling to himself. Y/N quietly snickered as she nodded her head.
Just last week, a new girl had began flirting with Luke. People tried to warn her but she didn’t listen. Y/N hadn’t even stepped out of her cabin before Clarisse pinned the newbie to the cold ground and forced her to stay away from Luke.
“Clarisse sure is working hard to prevent anybody interested from approaching us.” Y/N found it amusing because Clarisse never cared about couples until Y/N and Luke started dating.
“So. You up for training again tomorrow?” Luke questioned, changing the topic. Y/N playfully scoffed.
“Luke, you know your my second favourite boy… but no.” Y/N didn’t know how many more late nights and early mornings she could take.
“Second? Who’s first?” Luke sped up slightly, furrowing his eyebrows at Y/N.
“Percy.” She shrugged, “Sorry, Luke, but he’s a better breakfast buddy. And he doesn’t wake me up at the crack of dawn.”
Luke lightly pouted. He knew Y/N was joking but there was no way Percy was ranked above him. “I won’t wake you up early anymore.” He uttered, making Y/N pause.
“I guess I’ll have to change my list then. Percy’s been demoted to number two.”
Immediately, Luke’s eyes lit up. If he were a dog, his tail would’ve been wagging back and forth. Luke opened the cabin door, letting Y/N walk in first before he followed.
“We still have an hour before breakfast so Luke, don’t disturb me. Do whatever you want as long as it doesn’t wake me up.” Y/N sternly pointed at him and he mockingly saluted.
“Yes, ma’am.”
While Y/N lay down, Luke resorted to looking around the cabin. There wasn’t anything of significant interest apart from the closet shoved into a deserted corner, which Luke ignored. The last time he opened a mysterious closet, he was dragged into it. Of course, it was a prank meant for an Athena kid but they were too smart to fall for it. Especially when said closet was placed in the middle of a flower field.
Luke looked at Y/N, who was already sound asleep. He smiled, creeping over to the side of the bed. He found peaceful solitude in tracing his eyes over Y/N’s soft features. He would’ve stared at her for hours if she didn’t groggily wake up five minutes later.
“You’re distracting.” She groaned, glaring at Luke.
“I’m not even doing anything this time, Sparky!” Of course, as Y/N’s boyfriend plus friend, it was his job to annoy her. “How am I distracting?”
“Your staring is distracting. Come over here.” Y/N motioned to the spot beside her on the unusually large bed. Luke gleefully climbed in, immediately hugging Y/N. He was as affectionate as ever, even more so now that they were officially together.
Y/N hummed as Luke tilted her chin up, lightly kissing her. “Luke.” She mumbled against his lips, “I wanna sleep.”
“Five more minutes.” He uttered those famous words.
“Sleep now, act like a couple later.” Y/N pulled away, lying down on Luke’s chest. She closed her eyes, sighing deeply.
“Can I come with you when you teach the newbies to sword fight? I’m in the mood for watching you pummel them.”
Luke chuckled, hugging Y/N even tighter. “Sure, Sparky. I’ll try not to embarrass myself too much.”
Y/N sat on the bench, beaming at Luke. His eyes remained glued to her despite one of the younger kids tripping over their own feet.
“Hey, you’re Y/N, right?”
She almost jumped when someone sat beside her. Suddenly, Luke’s face shifted. Y/N turned her head, glancing at the boy beside her.
“Oh. Yeah. Um, you’re one of the new kids, right?” Y/N questioned, tilting her head to the side.
“Yeah. I just got here yesterday. I’m honestly still a little confused so it’d be great if you could show me around.” He smiled, showing off his pearly white teeth.
“I guess I could try? I’m a little busy because of my duties as head counsellor. By default, of course. Because I’m the only one in my cabin.”
“Oh, who’s your godly parent?”
Y/N hesitated for a second before she cleared her throat. “… Zeus.” She wasn’t proud of having him as her father. He was unbearable, especially when he ignored her for so long then proceeded to act as if he hadn’t.
“That’s cool. Can you control lightning or something?”
“Perhaps. Percy has some water powers so maybe it applies to me too.” Y/N shrugged. Out of the corner of her eye, she could see Luke excuse himself from the campers across the arena.
Y/N watched him with bated breath as he approached her. “Hey. Is there something wrong with your armour?” He asked the boy beside Y/N. “Because we’re going to start mock fights soon. Clarisse will be monitoring.” Luke jabbed a thumb over his shoulder.
“Ah, no. Everything’s good. Don’t worry. My armor’s fine.” The unnamed boy stood up, walking over to the rest of the group.
“What was that for?” Y/N softly asked, “He was only asking for some help.”
“He was flirting, Y/N.” Luke cooly replied, sitting down next to her. “I know guys like that. Their way of flirting is asking for help.”
“You don’t know that, Luke.”
“Yes. I do, Y/N.”
“The overprotective nature was cute at first, Luke. But you can’t assume every guy who talks to me is interested in me.”
“I see the way they look at you. I mean, how could they not? You’re beautiful and kind and great at fighting and on top of that, you’re Zeus daughter.”
“I chose you, Luke. Not any of the other guys desperate for my attention. You think I’m not jealous when I see girls giggling at you? Of course I am. But I know that you’re mine. And you have to know that my heart only belongs to you.”
Luke cracked a small grin. “Yeah. Yeah. I’m sorry, Y/N. I just got jealous.”
“It’s okay, Luke. I’m sorry I called your overprotectiveness annoying. It’s not. I still think it’s cute. I was just caught up in the moment. I guess I just didn’t want to feel helpless. A daughter of Zeus should not be helpless.”
“You aren’t helpless. Whoever thinks that you are needs a major reality check.” Luke shook his head, glancing over at Clarisse. “You wanna get out of here?” He whispered, nudging Y/N.
“I, um, actually agreed to show him around.” Y/N mumbled, pointing over at the boy. Luke pressed his lips into a thin line.
“Okay.” He gently said, nodding his head. “I’ll keep Annabeth company while you show him around. But if he tries anything funny, I will punch him.” Luke warned.
“I know, Luke. I know.” She smiled, pressing a chaste kiss to his cheek. She was partly hoping that the boy from before saw their interaction so he would put whatever sneaky schemes he had to rest.
“So, let me get this straight, Annabeth found out Percy was Poseidon’s child when Clarisse cornered him in a bathroom… and shoved his head into a toilet?” Y/N raised an eyebrow as she picked another strawberry, placing it in the straw basket Luke was holding.
“Yeah. And then Percy practically attacked her with toilet water.” Luke chuckled to himself as he bit into a strawberry. “Annabeth told me all about it. It was hilarious.”
“Sounds like Percy.” Y/N replied, plucking a few more berries. She handed one to Luke, who took it like a child being given candy.
“So, how was showing that boy around?”
“Well, I thought his name was Alston and it took about two hours for me to realise that his name was actually Allen. He never corrected me so I never knew.”
Luke huffed in amusement as he slung his arm around Y/N’s shoulder. “Sounds like you. Any idea of what cabin he’d gonna be in?”
“Ares.” Y/N immediately answered, taking Luke by surprise. “He’s hungry for power. He has a thirst for it. And he can’t seem to tear his eyes off the Ares kids, it’s like he’s drawn to them. What about you?”
“Good guess. Ares as well for me.”
“Are you sure you aren’t just copying me?”
Their playful banter went on for quite some time. It was normal for the couple to tease and push. That’s how they were before they started dating too.
“Have you ever tried chocolate on strawberries?” Luke asked, picking up another red berry.
“I’m not obsessed with them like you are, Luke.” Y/N was never much of a sugar person. She liked desserts for a certain extent and chocolate wasn’t her favourite like Luke’s was.
“How come I have a cute nickname for you and you don’t have one for me?” Luke questioned, gazing down at Y/N.
“I’m not big on pet names. And I could hardly call Sparky cute. Unless you want to be called messenger boy, don’t push it.”
“I’ll message you my heart.” Luke grinned as he pulled out a slip of paper that was stamped with a red heart.
“What’s this?” Y/N turned it over but Luke stopped her from opening it.
“Read it when I’m gone otherwise I’ll be too embarrassed. It’s just a little gift for my amazing girlfriend.” Luke quickly kissed her before he hurried off, taking the strawberries with him.
Y/N sat down in a sunny patch and opened the letter, staring at Luke’s neat handwriting. “A love letter…” She whispered, her eyes widening. She has received plenty of love letters before, mostly before she came to Camp, but Luke’s felt special. He was pouring his heart out to her through his inked words and messily drawn hearts.
“Hey Y/N. What ya reading?”
She held back a small scoff as Allen approached her, hands clasped behind her back.
“Something private.” She said, hoping he would get the hint. But he didn’t.
“Is it a love letter? Who still writes those, these days?” Allen plucked the letter from Y/N’s grasp and before she could stop him, he dunked it in a nearby puddle. “Oops.” He merely smirked.
“What the hell is wrong with you?” Y/N seethed, watching as the ink bled out from off the paper and Luke’s beloved words floated away.
“You’ll get another love letter. No need to be so uptight.” Allen laughed, not noticing how Y/N’s vision flashed red with anger. She was never one to get furious but Luke’s gifts meant the world to her.
“Are you crazy? Stupid? Perhaps mentally impaired? Why would you do that? Even if the letter didn’t mean much to me, you have no right to grab it and ruin it!” Y/N stood up, wobbling from side to side. Her body felt unusually heavy.
“It was just a joke, Y/N.” Allen reached out to touch her. He grasped her wrist but was suddenly flung back by an unknown force. As he lifted his hand, he yelped. It had been burnt, and badly. His skin was sizzling and some parts were even charred black.
“Don’t touch me again.” Y/N muttered, storming off. Allen clicked his tongue, watching her leave.
“Crazy bitch.” He muttered under his breath. He went to the infirmary and got his hand patched up before returning to the Hermes cabin.
“Yo, what happened to your hand?” Chris asked almost immediately. Luke’s eyes flickered over to the bandage that was wrapped around Allen’s hand.
“Y/N. The crazy girl went ballistic after her little love letter fell in water. I grabbed her and then she flung me back. I didn’t even know she could do that.” Allen scoffed.
Luke didn’t wait around to hear the rest. He was out of the cabin before Allen could say another word. He burst into Y/N’s room, making an instant beeline for her figure hiding beneath the blankets.
“Go away, Clarisse. I told you, I don’t want to talk.” Y/N said, shifting around.
“It’s not Clarisse, Sparky. What happened? Why’d you burn Allen?”
Y/N slowly slid the covers off her head. “I didn’t mean to. I was so angry that I didn’t know what was happening. He dunked your letter in water, Luke! So I snapped at him and he tried to stop me from leaving by grabbing me. And I don’t know how it happened, but I burnt him and sent him crashing into the strawberry bushes.
“Oh… are the strawberries okay?” Luke furrowed his eyebrows together, concerned.
“Luke,” Y/N glowered at him, “This is about me! Not the strawberries!” She hit his chest. “It’s not like it’s my fault he touched me. He deserved it anyway.”
“I know, Sparky. I know. I’ll take care of him. You just focus on calming down. It’s not your fault. I’ll write you a million letters if you need.” Luke hugged her, pressing a long kiss to the side of her head. She laughed, wrapping her arms around his waist.
“Thanks, Luke.” She mumbled, pressing her face deeper into his shirt.
“I love you, Y/N.”
Y/N froze. She stiffly rested in Luke’s embrace, staring blankly at his bright orange shirt. An awkward silence rested between the pair and even though Luke didn’t comment on her lack of response, he still wondered why didn’t she reply?
“Don’t you think it’s a little unfair how we’re always fighting against the Hermes and Athena cabin?” Clarisse said as she sharpened her sword. She clicked her tongue.
“It is a little unfair. Annabeth is always one step ahead of us.” Y/N sighed. She clenched her jaw when she spotted Allen walking towards her. “Oh, great. Jerk alert.” She whispered to Clarisse, rolling her eyes.
“I’ll leave you to beat him up.” The Ares girl replied, shoving her way past Allen.
“Y/N. Hey. I just wanna say that I’m sorry. I didn’t know the letter meant that much to you.”
She stared at him, unimpressed. “Okay.” She murmured.
“Okay? That’s it? I apologised to you and all you say is okay?” Allen scoffed.
“Just because you apologised doesn’t mean I forgive you.” Y/N resisted the urge to roll her eyes in fear they would get stuck. She spent so much time being annoyed with people.
“Do you have to be such a bitch about it?” Allen snapped.
Y/N deeply inhaled. She stiffly smiled at Allen before standing up. “I have to go.” She uttered, brushing past the boy. But just like last time, he grabbed her hand and unfortunately for her, there was no electricity to save her.
“Accept my apology.” He said, gripping her arm so tight he may as well leave a bruise.
“I told you not to touch me.” Y/N tried to pull her arm out of his grasp but he was relentless.
“Leave me alone, okay!” She exclaimed, lifting her other hand and slapping Allen’s check. “Stay away from me, you creep! Honestly!”
Y/N scoffed in disgust, storming off. She went to go find Luke, but she found him on the porch of the Aphrodite cabin, talking to the same girl that tested their relationship before it even started.
Y/N slowly licked her lips and looked away, fidgeting with her hands. She decided to leave Luke alone for now, ignoring the dull ache she felt in her chest.
After months of pure happiness, everything was coming crashing down. And there was nothing Y/N could do to stop it. She sighed, collapsing on her own wooden porch. A new game of capture the flag was going to start soon and she didn’t have time to brood.
“Hey, you good?” Clarisse asked as Y/N slid her helmet over her head and the first conch blew. Y/N simply smiled, nodding over at her best friend.
“Yeah. I’m good. Don’t worry about it, Clari.” She smiled again to reassure Clarisse. She glanced over at Luke and the Aphrodite girl, whose name was Lana. They were laughing together. They had been for the past few days. Y/N didn’t know if it was her or Luke but lately, they hadn’t been talking at all.
Clarisse followed her gaze and pieced everything together. “You can switch positions with someone else.” She offered because they both knew Luke was going to be the one to get the flag. “Today feels like an offence day for you anyway.”
Y/N silently smiled at Clarisse as she switched jobs with one of the Ares kids.
“Thanks, Clari.”
“No problem, baby. If it weren’t for Luke, I might’ve dated you myself.” Clarisse playfully smirked while Y/N laughed.
“If it weren’t for him, I might’ve taken you up on that offer.”
Communication was important in a relationship but for some reason, Y/N and Luke could never talk peacefully. It always turned into argument and one, if not both of them, would turn away hurt.
Y/N was ready to go by the time the second conch blew. Usually, she guarded her team’s flag but today, she was hunting through the woods. Each of her opponents were more surprised than the last to see her because it was always Luke’s job to duel against her. He was really the only one who could beat her.
“We surrender.” The blue leader said, hands help up. Y/N smiled, slinging her spear over her shoulder.
“Easy peasy.” She said to her teammates, who laughed with her. “This might be the quickest game yet. Let’s grab that flag and get outta here.”
Y/N didn’t know who she was expecting to be guarding the blue flag. Maybe Percy or Chris or even Annabeth herself. But not Luke.
He easily disarmed her teammates, leaving Y/N for last. “Rematch, Sparky?” He uttered, mockingly swinging his sword.
“Really? We don’t talk for a few days and that’s all you say?” Y/N replied as she blocked the blow.
“Well, last I recall, you’re always busy with Allen.”
“Not willingly. You know that.”
“What was he doing in the arena with you then?”
Y/N scoffed. “Annoying me. What are you and Lana always talking about?”
“Don’t turn this on me, Sparky.” Luke warned as he stepped to the side, barely avoiding Y/N’s weapon.
“We really need to figure our shit out, Luke. Maybe somewhere that’s not on a battlefield.”
Y/N and Luke were both headstrong and stubborn, which is what made communication so hard in the first place.
“Lana’s only a friend, Y/N. Barely that. I’m only helping her. What do you call Allen?”
“An obnoxious fly.” Y/N whacked Luke in the head, taking him by surprise.
“You seem closer than that. He’s always touching you.”
“And every time he does, I wish I could burn him. Are you sure you aren’t jealous?”
“Are you sure you aren’t? Your eyes are always on Lana.”
“Because she likes you, Luke. And she hasn’t gotten the hint that you’re taken.”
Y/N’s teammates exchanged looks and quietly crawled away from the now private conversation.
“Why don’t you trust me, Y/N? You know I’d never cheat on you.” Luke furrowed his eyebrows as he wiped away beads of sweat with the back of his hand.
“You have to trust me first. Why would I choose Allen over you? That seems like an unfair deal.”
“Maybe you just like the attention. I mean, you didn’t even say you love me back.” Luke shrugged, stepped back to avoid his leg from being slashed by Y/N’s blade.
“I’m not ready for that, Luke! You know what,” Y/N paused gripping her spear tightly. “I’m sick of this. I’m sick of arguing and not trusting each other. A relationship requires trust and despite being friends before all this, we’re doing a lousy job of it. So…”
Y/N pursed her lips as she trailed off. “So, maybe we’re just trying to make something impossible work.”
Luke suddenly froze, realising the small argument was going somewhere he didn’t want it to. “You don’t mean that, Y/N.”
“… I do. Luke, we’ve been avoiding each other and over what? Stupid things. You’re blaming me for talking to guys and I’m getting mad at you for even looking at other girls. Luke, we’re not in a stable relationship. We’re both insecure and there’s no communication between us. Don’t you see it? I think the best thing to do here… is take a break.”
It was silent, save for the chirping birds. In the distance, Y/N could hear Clarisse let out a battle cry. Luke sighed, stepping aside. “Just… take the flag, Y/N. Take it. I don’t care about it anymore.”
“We’re going to talk about this later, Luke.”
“Yeah. I know, Sparky. Just… go.” He heaved another heavy sigh, almost shaking. Y/N gripped the flag, sparing Luke one more glance before she sprinted through the forest.
Luke watched as she not only stole the flag but also his heart with it.

"POLICE SEIZE LARGE QUANTITY OF MACHINES," Montreal Star. November 6, 1933. Page 11. --- Apparatus of Slot Variety Held Illegal --- In one of the biggest seizures of alleged gambling devices in the history of the Montreal police department, 400 Chicago-made slot machines said to be worth over $50,000 were discovered in a vacant store at 975 St. Antoine street on Saturday afternoon by a squad of constables under Deputy Director E. H. Gobeil. As a follow-up 70 more machines were seized near Lacolle on Sunday morning.
Three men whose names were not revealed, were in the store arranging the machines when the police arrived. After being questioned they were released, it having been ascertained that they were only engaged to look after the machines while in storage. No information as to the owner or distributor of the devices could be obtained from them.
Following the seizure here of the s machines all of which were manufactured by a Chicago firm, 70 more were seized in two trucks just after they had crossed into Canada yesterday morning at the border near Lacolle. These machines were also destined for Montreal. They were said to be worth over $8,000.
It was stated that over $80,000 has already been collected from storekeepers who wanted these seized machines in their places of business.

'V Is For Vectory' by @jack-of-crowns
At first it was scary, the bi-weekly trips up to Montreal that dark and stormy autumn. The long car rides in your mother's Starfire as the mountains raced past the three piece rear window all streaked with stonefly wings and leaf-littered rain; nodding silently at the blank faces of the border guards at LaColle; counting the long miles up the A-15 by the rhythms of the rubber thumping out a steady drumbeat. Then dharm-mata's comforting presence, always the first person at the handleless door in that yellowing brick building off Pine Avenue. She would sit with us, holding your hand and sharing a Mounds bar as we would wait for the doctors to call us down into the long labyrinths beyond the inner door; she'd return the soldier's salutes as they would pass through in their hushed twos and threes with that wistful smile in her eyes.
But those are the good memories looking back now, aren't they? Those weren't the ones we were scared of; what lay beyond the inner door as dharm-mata let go of your hand and the soldiers led us down and through into the bowels of the Allan, that was what was scary at first. The pain as the sharp needles pierced your soft flesh; that was hurt that would linger for days, mottled bruises to remind us of how we came into each other's lives. That would have been enough for any child, but the scars we both bear from those days of our awakening are wounds from which no balm of Gilead can ever bring blessed relief; for that I will never find forgiveness for those who restored my brokenness and brought me forth from the depths of Naraka to forge anew a weapon that should never have been used with such magnification of force upon mortal minds again.
You got used to our ghosts, eventually. We would meld into each other's consciousness, and the truths of all those deemed foes whose lives I had taken across aeons of armed conflict would become as numbingly inured to your own superego as they had so long ago in mine, an endless parade of terror tales that began to blur and fade like the four-colour panels of a dime store comic book as they ceased to trouble your waking mind less and less. That's the beginning of the meld; that's when the artificers are watching us most closely. At length we became inseparable, you and I; and we grew together, and the memories of those long nights on the ride south home to the lake chalet as we slowly became aware of what we were becoming faded away as surely as the curls of smoke from your mother's cigarettes.
So wake up, soldier. Don't pretend that what we have done together for whatever gods-forsaken causes never happened, don't try to pretend that it was all some schizoid nightmare that you would have eventually recovered from. You and I; we were never anything else than what we became- a living weapon, a perfect psychic vector of death to turn the innermost fears of our wielder's enemies into the instrument of their defeat as surely as though we ourselves were the blade that had pierced their hearts. I say again; wake up, soldier. There are irredeemable demons in hells innumerable who have committed atrocities a thousand times more evil than thou. Once in a great while, we will meet these damned who are worth fighting, and those are the victories that will bring us to the only possible redemption that such as ourselves will ever attain.

"A man was found dead on Wednesday near Roxham Road, a common passage between the United States and Canada used by migrants to claim asylum.
The man was a migrant who was trying to cross the unofficial border, according to police sources who spoke to Radio-Canada on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly.
The Sûreté du Québec (SQ), Quebec's provincial police force, confirmed the death on Thursday morning. The circumstances of the death remain unclear.
"We will investigate the cause of death, it will take some time," said Louis-Philippe Ruel, a spokesperson for the SQ. "We are trying to determine how he got there, where he was coming from, where he was going and who he was."
The SQ confirmed the body of the man was discovered on Wednesday afternoon between Roxham Road and the Saint-Bernard-de-Lacolle border crossing, about five kilometres away. Officers were using off-road vehicles, metal detectors and sniffer dogs to search an area east of Roxham Road on Thursday afternoon.
His nationality is unknown."

Powers: Curse's power reflects their father's power, Carnage. Even with all sharing powers of Carnage, they have three powers that either are unique or more powerful to Carnage's version of the power.
Tracking Evasion: Curse has power to prevent all kinds of tracking, and even cameras can’t record her. The only way to track Curse is using a magical tracking spell or physically seeing her.
Invisibility: Other Symbiotes have some form of camouflage but Curse can go completely invisible. This power isn't perfect as the moment they attack they return being visible.
Neurotoxic Venom: Curse produce a neurotoxic venom and often coat their claws or weapons in it. When Cass is in control the venom is weak and won't kill but when Curse is in the driver seat the venom becomes extremely deadly.
Bio: Cassandra’s story starts a bit before her birth and involves an unethical doctor, who wished to do a study of nurture vs nature. Dr. Robert Roth used his connections to get a sperm sample of the famous killer, Cletus Kasady, before he became Carnage. Dr. Roth paid ten Canadian families, who were desperate for a child, and they were lied to about who the sperm donor was.
Cassandra was born to one of those families, her mother was Native American and father was white man. Everything was fine for the first five years of her life but then her father lost his job and started drinking. He started to abuse his wife and her wife slowly mentally broke down in a year's time. Her mother finally snapped then killed her husband and went to kill Cassandra but slipped and killed herself. Her final words Cassandra remembers was called Cassandra a curse on their family.
Cassandra was found by police after the neighbors called them and she was put into foster care. Her stay wasn’t long luckily and adopted by the Fisher family, which gave her lots of love. For ten years she lived a peaceful life until Cletus Kasady got the Carnage symbiote and found out about the program.
Cletus went after seven of the families first to see if they were like him but was disappointed in seeing none of them were like him. His next target was Cassandra’s family and she was in the basement when he killed her adopted family. She came up to see Carnage over her mother and without a second thought she turned on the home system. The sound on the tv caused Carnage pain and Cassandra could escape Carnage but not unharmed as Carnage slashed her back.
Cassandra got outside of the house and jump started the car to drive off in a panic. For three days Cassandra ran from Carnage with just her wit and luck until the fourth day in St-Bernard-de-Lacolle, Quebec, Carnage had cornered Cassandra. Cassandra didn’t know how to get out of the corner until she felt something crawling out of her skin and a voice telling her to punch. Cassandra punched and sent Carnage through a building wall and Curse covered her body.
Curse told her to run and not even second thought she did that while Curse turned them invisible. Cassandra used this to go over the border to New York and once deep in the city and alleyway she asked who Curse was. Thanks to the genetic memory power all Symbiotes have and that is when Cassandra found out she was the biological daughter of Cletus.
For three years Cassandra is bound to Curse and running from Carnage. On the way Cassandra made few friends in heroes and few enemies in both villains and heroes. She has kept quiet about her being Cletus’ child and everyone thinks she’s being hunted because she escaped his claws.
Top 5 Shit List:
Cletus Kasady - Tried to kill her before she got Curse and still is hunting her.
Reed Rickards - Tried to remove Curse to experiment on it.
Maria Hill - Tried to remove Curse as she thought a child shouldn’t have that kind of power.
Scott Summers - Attacked Cassandra thinking she was Carnage and when this cleared up misinformation he still tried to remove Curse from her.
Norman Osborn - He tried to take Curse away to use it as a new bio-weapon.
Top 5 Trust List:
Natasha Romanoff - Natasha was the first hero to find Cassandra and like trying to gain a feral cat Natasha would use food to gain little trust. She would never lie to Cassandra and let her crash at her apartment. Natasha saved Cassandra and vice versa to the point Cassandra is very close to telling Natasha her deepest secret. Cassandra sees Natasha as a third mother figure.
Felicia Hardy - Taught her how to live on the streets and other skills to survive. Cassandra sees her as a big sister.
Steve Rogers - Steve’s leadership just sucked her in and he never lied or betrayed her, also he taught her how to fix a car. Cassandra sees him as a cool uncle.
Flash Thompson - He saved her from Norman and just like Natasha slowly built a bound, though it’s more of a sibling relationship.
Ororo Munroe - Ororo stopped Scott and used her powers to allow Cassandra to sneak off. Afterwards Ororo would buy Cassandra a pizza a few times and slowly build trust with Cassandra.

That's just -
I'd like to have something to add, but all this brings out of me is a long-suffering sigh.
Then I remember my American former colleagues and distinctly remember the newbies saying they felt naked without a gun, all the while traipsing the generally safe streets of Montreal's suburbs...
I mean, Montreal isn't perfect. Look at the news, and you'll see we have surges of gang violence with the occasional civilian getting caught in the crossfire. What's notable is our local idiots couldn't have gotten their guns locally - we have laws that prohibit this.
Nope - their guns are probably part of the other half of what used to transit across Roxham Road, between Champlain, New York and Saint-Bernard-de-Lacolle, Quebec. We either had asylum seekers - or laundered guns headed straight for the local gangs and mafia units.
By and large, though, none of us have guns. Legally, that is. Guns are for cops or folks with a verified hunting license. We also crack down extremely hard on chapter kids looking to start shit because some kid from North Montreal dared to post a diss track to SoundCloud.
Who do we consistently find at the top of the food chain for these poor sods? Sicilian clans with a noted, filed and verified foot in the Cosa Nostra and its American offshoots, or biker gangs trying to round out their numbers after selling dope.
Anyone who thinks guns solve anything hasn't lost someone dear to them. Sure, I can't import Nerf gun mods because of this and anything that even looks like a gun - including water pistols - is leered at by most Customs officers, but it keeps my local culture reasonably sane, comparatively.
I've had six or seven Nerf mod parts destroyed and sent back to me as pics by Canada's Border Services, but I've since concluded that not tinkering with plastic toys is a small price to pay if it means some kid who's in need of a therapist can't get his hands on an AR-15.

NOBODY’S SON, NOBODY’S DAUGHTER. luke (pjo) pt 4
PART 1 > PART 2 > PART 3 > PART 4 (last pt)
( masterlist )
IN WHICH… Y/N is chosen for a quest, one of which Luke knows she might not return from. When she returns a three months later, he vows to never let her go again. After all, the son of Hermes and the daughter of Zeus can never stay apart for long.
“I’m in the wind, you’re in the water. Nobody’s son, nobody’s daughter.”
Warnings : gore, violence, really descriptive words of gore (it’s lowkey grossing me out), complicated relationship, doesn’t follow canon plot, just a little bit of swearing

Three months without Luke. Three terrible, lonely months without him. They were supposed to be on a break but they hadn’t spoken since capture the flag.
Luke stopped talking to Lana and Allen finally stopped annoying Y/N after she accidentally electrocuted him again, but worse. It was safe to say he spent a few weeks with the Apollo kids.
Y/N sat alone at her table, picking at her food. Percy looked as lonely as her. With no siblings to sit beside, they were left in their own company.
Y/N almost jumped when someone sat beside her. Part of her wished it was Luke and she felt disappointed when it was only Mai. “Hey.” She softly said, leaning forward. “You’ve always wanted to go on a quest, right?”
In all her ten years at camp, Y/N had never been on a quest. It’s not like she wasn’t a top candidate because she was. But nobody really wanted an unclaimed demigod on their team, even if she was more than qualified.
“I guess.” Y/N shrugged. Her occupied mind wasn’t really focused on quests right now. Mai’s beautiful brown eyes shined even brighter as she grinned, her eyes crinkling.
“I’m not supposed to tell anyone until Chiron announces it… but I’ve been chosen for quest.” She squealed, kicking her legs.
“And?” Y/N raised an eyebrow as she slowly chewed on her food. Why was Mai telling her that? They weren’t exactly close and they had barely spoken since Y/N’s night in the Aphrodite cabin.
“I want you to know that you,” She lightly poked the tip of Y/N’s nose. “Are coming with me.” Mai giggled as she stood up, rushing off before Y/N could even question it. Y/N whipped her head around, speechless. She could hardly focus on training with Luke haunting her mind. How was she supposed to help with a quest?
She slowly sighed, chewing lightly on her bottom lip. When she felt someone burning holes into her with their gaze, she lifted her head. To no one’s surprise, it was Luke. He quickly looked away, resuming his conversation with Chris as if nothing had happened.
Y/N gripped her fork. Maybe a quest would be good for her. She could get away from Camp and focus on lashing out all her anger on the poor monsters.
After breakfast, Chiron gathered up the camp’s best fighters and possible allies for Mai on her quest. Y/N wasn’t surprised to see Luke and Clarisse lined up beside her.
Y/N shifted around awkwardly, uncomfortable with the idea of standing next to Luke. The air was thick with tension and not just because everyone was eager to get chosen. Y/N’s fidgeting caught Luke’s keen eye but he didn’t say a word, simply turning his gaze to look ahead once more.
“The Oracle has confirmed what we expected.” Chiron uttered, his hands clasped behind his back. “The monsters are attempting to enter the mortal realm, which is bad news for both us and them. Their base of operation lies in New York, which is where you will venture to. Time is of the essence. I have selected the best candidates to join you on your journey.”
“Y/N.” Mai suddenly cut Chiron off.
“Usually, one waits to head at least one name.” Chiron retorted.
“I know all their names. I want Y/N. If there’s anyone who can help me succeed, it’s her. I mean, she’d probably push me down a flight of stairs if it was part of the quest. And I need someone like that.” Mai’s eyes scanned over the rest of the demigods, weighing out all her options in her head. “I also want Clarisse. If we run into a monster and we don’t weapons, I can count on her to slay it with a piece of paper.”
Luke parted his lips to say something but no words came out. For the first time in three months, he talked to Y/N. “Hey.” He jogged towards her, staring down at her with so much emotion in his eyes. “Um, I know we haven’t talked in a while but… stay safe. On your quest, I mean.”
Y/N slowly and stiffly smiled. “Thanks… Luke. I’ll try my best.” She nodded.
“Wait, Y/N.” Luke called out, reaching for her again. “Don’t die. Please.” He grabbed her face, kissing her with so much strength and passion that it felt like her were turning to jelly. “This way… you have to come back because we definitely need to talk about that and our break.”
“Y/N, you coming?” Mai asked, turning around just as Luke pulled away.
“Uh…” Her cheeks flushed red. “Yes. Yeah. I’m coming, Mai!” She looked at Luke and poked his chest. “Stop being confusing and learn to communicate more while I’m gone. See you soon, Luke.” She hurried off, faltering when Mai slung an arm around her shoulder.
Luke didn’t really care about the other demigods being sent off on dangerous quests but if Y/N didn’t return, he swore he would set the world on fire. And he always kept his promises.
Camp was lonely without Y/N, even if all he did was stare longingly at her. “Hey, Lana.” Luke uttered as he leaned against the walls of the Aphrodite cabin, arms crossed over his chest. “How do I… improve my communication?”
“Is this about Y/N?” Lana questioned, tilting her head to the side.
Luke lightly scoffed. “Of course it is. She deserves better but I can’t see her with anyone else so I want to become better.” Luke ran a hand through his hair, clenching his jaw. “I thought that since you’re an Aphrodite kid, you can help me.”
Lana stared at him with a pointed look before she lightly huffed in amusement and nodded. “Okay, first of all… we need to fix your communication problem.”
“I do not have a communication issue.”
“Your relationship with Y/N says otherwise.” Lana raised her eyebrows while Luke sighed. “You see what I mean? So first, communication. Second, words of encouragement. Make her feel special. Validate her. You love her, yes? Then show it. Actions speak louder than words. Once Y/N comes back, you’ll be a whole new person. With my help, duh.”
Lana grinned, pulling Luke into the cabin. “You don’t need a physical makeover. You’re the definition of a pretty boy. What you need is a new mindset. Sure, you and Y/N are in a rough patch with all the arguments.”
Lana slightly scrunched up her nose as she chuckled.
“But if Y/N is this special to you, then changing for her should be no problem. I won’t lie, it’s gonna be hard, Luke. For now, I’m going to make you watch To All the Boys I’ve loved Before, all of the movies, because they have terrible communication. And you’re also gonna watch Say Anything because you need to see the boombox scene.”
“I’ve seen the Lloyd boombox scene, Lana… I’m not holding up a boombox.”
“Not even for Y/N?”
Luke groaned, holding his face in his hands. “Okay. I’ll hold the damn boombox.”
“And play Lana Del Rey?”
“Why Lana Del Rey?”
“Because Y/N loves her. And it’s Lana Del Rey. Who else would you play? Besides, I’m sure Y/N is having a great time and I am in dire need of some toxic love songs here.”
Y/N stared at the hypnotising and flashing lights in front of her. “Let me get this straight,” She muttered, turning to Clarisse and Mai, “We need to get in there…” She pointed at the only entrance, “But the only way to do so is…”
“To walk in. As one of the models.” Mai quickly finished Y/N’s sentence, nodding her head.
Y/N sharply clicked her tongue. “Why not cause a distraction? That seems easier. I mean, we could definitely pull off the model look because we’re all pretty hot but it’s risky.”
“Y/N’s right.” Clarisse piped up. “Lucky for her, I’ve come up with the perfect distraction. Get ready to run in.” The Ares girl cunningly grinned while Y/N and Mai hid beneath a table.
“So, what do you think she’s going to do?” Y/N questioned, peeking out from under the white cloth.
“Maybe pull a fire alarm?”
Y/N shook her head. “That’s not her style.” A loud boom suddenly echoed through the hall. Exploded bits of stone and rubble smashed against the tiled floor, a few bits scratching Y/N’s ankles.
She pressed her lips into a line as she looked at Mai again. “Yeah. That’s more of what I was expecting.”
At this very moment, Y/N hated the number three. It seemed to bring bad luck to her. Three months without Luke and three months on a quest. That was practically six months without his energetic company.
Y/N quietly scoffed to herself. She couldn’t believe that after all this time, Luke still plagued her mind like a disease. Except he wasn’t a disease. Once upon a time, he was Y/N’s light in the darkness.
“What are you doing?” Clarisse asked when she found her best friend curled up in a blanket and rolled up into a small ball.
“Uh… Sleeping?” Y/N came up with a lousy excuse. Clarisse rolled her eyes and lightly kicked Y/N in the side.
“Get up. We’ve got to get to camp before any more monsters find us.”
It had been a difficult mission but Clarisse, Y/N, and Mai had managed to pull it off. Y/N slowly stood up but froze when he heard a loud roar echo through the trees. She and Clarisse exchanged a panicked look.
“Wake Mai up!” Y/N exclaimed, shoving as much as she could into her bag. Clarisse violated shook Mai awake, not giving the groggy girl time to adjust to the light.
The trio sprinted through the woods, trying to stay ahead of whatever was hunting them down. Y/N loudly panted as she reached the top of the hill. Her lungs felt like they were on fire. Unfortunately, neither Clarisse and Mai were blessed with her lighting fast running and the two girls were still lagging behind.
The monster burst through the thick foliage and Y/N’s heart fearfully skipped a beat. “Is that…” She trailed off in shock, staring at the beast with wide eyes.
“It’s a fucking manticore!” Clarisse shouted, pulling her sword out of its sheath. Everything was still and nobody dared to move as the Manticore growled at the group and circled around them.
“One of us has to distract it.” Clarisse quietly muttered as to not alarm the monster.
“I’ll do it.” Y/N quickly replied, reaching for new spear.
Mai pulled out a dagger, gripping it tightly in her left hand. “It’s my quest, guys. I’ll distract the manticore and you run.”
“No way.” Y/N shook her head, “I can take it.”
“I promised Luke I’d keep you safe.” Clarisse sneered, adjusting her stance. “So it should be me.”
“Now is not the time to talk about Luke and I’s complicated relationship.” Y/N snapped, flinching slightly when the manticore growled again.
“He kissed you, Y/N. I’d say he still has plenty of feelings left for you.” Mai’s eyes carefully followed the manticore’s moves. It seemed to have enough of their bickering and it lunged at the person closest to it. That person was Mai.
She screamed as the manticore attempted to claw at her face. Clarisse slashed through the monster’s wing and it howled in evident pain. Its scorpion tail reached for Y/N but she jumped back before the stinger could pierce her flesh.
“I could use some help!” Mai shouted as the manticore’s sharp fangs sank into her right shoulder. Y/N knocked the monster off Mai and quickly helped the girl up.
“I’d say the cut wing is plenty of distraction. Now I would prefer to run before it stings us all!” Y/N exclaimed. She was lucky enough to dodge it’s stinger the first time but she couldn’t guarantee her success at doing it again.
Clarisse hacked at the manticore’s eyes, almost slitting its face open. “Let’s go!” She screamed, pushing an injured Mai towards camp. Y/N took off after her friends but the manticore made one more desperate lunge for a target.
Its stinger sank into her leg and she screamed in pain. Y/N stumbled, eventually falling and hitting the hard ground.
“Y/N!” Clarisse turned back, sprinting towards the H/C-nette.
The manticore pulled its stinger out with a loud squelch and it’s claws sliced at Y/N’s leg, creating a gash so bloody that Clarisse had to look away in fear she’d throw up at the gruesome sight.
Y/N desperately stretched out her hand to grab something, anything. When her hand brushed against a decently-sized rock, she grabbed it and whacked the manticore.
She scrambled up, pulling out her spear once more and hurling it in the direction of the monster’s heart. The sharp weapon pierced its chest and the monster exploded into golden fragments.
“Shit, shit, shit. We need to get you back to camp.” Clarisse said, panicking as she watched light grey veins stem from the sting. That was never a good sign.
“What’s taking them so long?” Percy asked as he sat beside Luke, holding a plate of food. It had been ages since Mai, Y/N, and Clarisse had left
“A quest takes time.” Annabeth butted in, “And this sounded like a hard one, even for them.”
“I’m sure the three of them can handle it.” Luke said, mainly to reassure himself that Y/N hadn’t died a painful and untimely death. Percy’s eyes flickered to a trio approaching the top of the hill.
“Hey.” He nudged Luke, “Is… Is that them?”
Luke could recognise Y/N’s H/C hair from a mile away. He stood up, accidentally hitting the table. That was Percy’s unspoken answer. Mai and Clarisse had Y/N’s arms slung around their shoulders as she limped forward. But Y/N suddenly tripped and the three of them stumbled, more like rolled, down the hill.
“Oh. Shit.” Luke was the first to react. He ran over to Y/N, who was lying underneath Mai. She groaned under the weight of the other demigod.
“I told you to be careful with your shoulder.” Clarisse grumbled, pulling Mai off Y/N. Luke hurriedly helped her up.
“Are you okay?” He asked.
“Apart from almost getting my leg torn off and the venom spreading quickly, I’m great.” Y/N awkwardly smiled and winced when she moved her injured limb. “Would you mind helping me to the infirmity?” She asked, but Luke was already one step ahead. He easily picked her up and laid her down on the first free bed he saw.
“What happened?” He asked as he looked at Y/N’s slashed leg.
Y/N was silent for a moment before she shrugged. “Manticore.” She said like it wasn’t a big deal, but it was because half her leg was almost falling off. Luke wanted to puke as he merely stared at it.
“Hey,” He said to a passing Apollo kid, “Do you think you could, I dunno, save her before she dies from manticore venom?”
The Apollo kid looked at Y/N’s leg, his nose scrunching up. “It did a good number on you. Mai got away with only a bite.”
“Yeah, I guess it has something to do with Zeus being my father.” Y/N sighed. “But my leg is really starting to hurt now.”
“The venom hasn’t spread to your torso yet so that’s good news. We may have to knock you unconscious because fixing this wound will take some time… and pain. Probably a lot of pain.” The boy called a few of his siblings over, quickly explaining the situation to them.
Luke stepped back to give them space and he waited until Y/N was unconscious before he left. “She’ll be okay, right?” He asked Genieve, one of the most skilled healers.
“She’s a tough girl, Luke. She’ll be fine.”
Y/N awoke a week later. She groaned as she sat up, stretching her arms and popping her back. She yawned, looking around at her surroundings. Multiple get better cards littered the table next to her and she smiled when she saw Percy’s bad attempt at drawing a whale.
“Oh. You’re awake.” Genieve kindly smiled at Y/N, “I was getting a little scared that you were in a coma.”
Y/N moved her injured leg, surprised to see that nothing was left of the grisly cut except a dark scar.
“We did our best but injuries from monsters don’t fully go away.” Genieve sheepishly piped up.
Y/N knew that. It was the same case with Luke’s scar. She jolted at the thought of Luke. Y/N turned to Genieve, wanting to ask where the boy was. She figured that it was finally time to talk with him.
No arguments, no misunderstandings, no blaming each other for something they couldn’t control.
As if understanding what she wanted, Genieve pointed towards the closed door. “Outside.” Was all she said.
Y/N walked towards the door, slowly pulling it open. A cold gust of air hit her and she shivered. Camp was usually warm all year round, even when it was snowing because the snow couldn’t get past the barrier.
Y/N stepped forward, looking around in shock as she sank into the freezing, knee-height snow. She had always wanted to touch it but Chiron warned her that going outside the barrier, even if it was close to camp, was dangerous.
There was a new sparkle in Y/N’s eye as she crouched down to grab a handful. She heard the lulling sound of music and when she looked up, she burst into laughter at the sight of Luke holding a boombox. He held it up high and with pride, not caring about the questioning looks campers gave him.
“You said you always wanted to see and touch snow… so I brought you some.” Luke uttered, his voice overlapping with the melodic sound of Lana Del Rey.
Tell me I'm your national anthem.
Red, white, blue is in the sky.
Summer's in the air and baby, heaven's in your eyes.
“I don’t care what you do, Sparky.” Luke said as he walked until he was standing in front of her. He placed the boombox down. “Break my heart. Break my heart into a thousand pieces and bury them. Do whatever you want… because I love you.”
Y/N cupped his cold face in her hands, lightly sniffing. She cracked a small smile. “You’re the only one for me, Luke. I’m sorry.”
“I’m sorry too, Sparky. From now on, I’ll communicate with you better. I’ll do anything for you. I’d kill for you, I’d set the world on fire for you. Just as long as I can hug and kiss you and call you mine.”
END.
