Lackawanna Heritage Valley Opens new Trail and Bike Share Program

Carbondale, PA (June 6) –

Last month, Lackawanna Heritage Valley National and State Heritage Area officially opened 1.4 miles of new trail linking on-street portions of the Lackawanna River Heritage Trail in Carbondale to the D&H Rail-Trail extension in Simpson. The trail, which includes two new bridges, can be used for walking, biking, and is pet-friendly.

Coinciding with this opening, Owen Worozbyt (Lackawanna’s Trail & Environmental Projects Manager) spoke in an interview with Fox56 for their Great Outdoors program of the new bike-share program called “Bike Carbondale.” This is a free program that allows for visitors to borrow bikes for the new trails, with 10 bikes available at the Carbondale YMCA and 5 bikes available at the Hotel Anthracite in downtown Carbondale.

I was a fat kid all my life and used to hide behind the wrestling mats to avoid running the mile in gym. This past year I decided to try running for the first time ever. Here’s a short video I put together from my skate session with Andrea, yesterday.

Again, Scranton has some great paved paths and trails to ride bikes, skateboard/rollerblade, hike or walk. Some spots are rougher than others, so be advised, but most of it is paved and smooth as glass.

The funny part is, I skated this section of the trail twice, yesterday. The first time was a solo run, after work. I contacted Andrea to tell her about the fun downhill sections and she asked if I wanted to go skating again. Well, I couldn't say no!

All in all, I skated close to 16 miles. Definitely feeling it today! I even saw local radio DJ Rock 107s The Prospector out there, biking the trail, so you know it’s a good trail to ride. Fun times!
