Would you consider Lackadaisy to be 'Noir'?

It has some noir-like elements, and I borrow some of the visual sensibilities of noir for certain comic panels after Volume 1, but not consistently so.

You might say the old guard of characters (Mitzi, Viktor, Zib, Wick, and Mordecai) have been tossed into a noir phase of their lives, what with the murder and fatalism and the 'what's going on here, exactly?' angles. But there's counter-focus on Rocky, Freckle, and Ivy, where the levity and romanticism tend to overshadow the cynicism, enough that I don't think Lackadaisy really qualifies as noir. It's maybe part noir, part screwball, part slapstick, tragi-comic, farcical gangster fare? I don't know. You decide.

Do you have any particular sense for how it is to be (or work towards being) an indie animator right now? I'm assuming that it's nigh-impossible to follow in the shoes of someone like you, or Rebecca Sugar, or Ian JQ, or... any of my idol-esque showrunners, frankly. But it seems like there's some interest to drum up about shows like The Amazing Digital Circus or Lackadaisy or Helluva Boss. What's your input on that front?

You nailed it.

I do think there will be some original animated show creators coming out of this next generation, but the chances of a studio supporting a young creator of an original idea seems much lower than it used to. CN is making some new shorts, so something interesting may come from there. Mostly, though, I think that the new stuff will come from people who just make something because they want to make something.

That's my current, sloppy plan anyway.

Things are going to get even weirder in the future, I think, as studios continue to push to replace or overwork their existing workers. LLMs are a bad investment all-around, but we may still end up fighting them for space on the internet. Studios would love to have complete dominance over the media space, so flooding the internet with AI trash is in their best interest.

So yeah. Make something. Make it now before things get harder.

Viv, you’re the one who’s going out of your way to watch all these critical videos.

You’re not a media critic, nobody is paying you to watch critical videos for review purposes, you’re watching them out of your own volition because you can’t stand the thought that there are people out there who dislike your work.

Rebecca Sugar has been getting criticized for Steven Universe for years now, and not once did she ever complain about the amount of hate she was getting on social media.

Wanna know why? It’s because she knows how to handle criticism like an adult.

Nobody likes dealing with criticism, but guess what? Everyone has to deal with it at some point in their lives.

Not everyone is going to like your work, and that’s fine, but acting like your work is this sacred thing that can never be criticized is so dumb.

Like I said many times before, I do think it’s important to point out all the bad faith arguments that are masquerading as criticism, because not pushing back against that garbage will only lead to more toxicity down the line.

But Viv never calls out any of the bad faith arguments, she just vague posts about random YouTube videos while her hardcore simps kiss her ass in the comments.

The Lackadaisy donation drama was stupid, but I’d lying if I said I didn’t take pleasure in watching Lackadaisy fans call Viv out on her shit on Twitter.

You know what's sad, Chai?

Viv's drawings were really bad and off. The only thing that was decent was the pumpkin because she literally has a pumpkin character of her own.

Caine was okay, but lacked substance (in her element of Tumblr Sexyman character/wanting to impress Goose no less). Her Lackadaisy and Murderdrone drawing were really bad. Especially the necktie.

I honestly would've liked to see her draw Blitz. Because that's obviously where she's most comfortable-her characters alone.

But her art style I will admit, did have a lot of love and whimsy to it. I like a lot of Zoophobia concepts and her OG shorts.

She was right-she doesn't animate or even draw much anymore. Its like she hit all her goals and said "fuck it". You can tell.

And it's sad. No wonder why she makes her characters crazy and had other people animate for her.

Her life seems hollow and empty that only taxidermy peacocks, Broadway shows, her cats (which are cute I do love cats), millions of dollars, clawing at celeb VA's attention to be their friends (while abandoning her real ones), mansion, bars, and diners can fill.

That's the weird thing about Vivzie. If you never look any deeper into her history or her patterns of behavior, she seems like the nicest person. The deeper you dig and the more you learn about her, you see how terrible and abusive she is. But go deep enough and you start to realize there's something...sad, like you said. There's a reason you don't see Alex Hirsch or Rebecca Sugar or Tracy or Gooseworx losing it on Twitter because someone criticized their shows, or ranting about how all their former friends were always out to get them.

I'm sure she'd say she's the happiest she's ever been, and hey, I don't know, I'm not Vivzie, maybe she is. But I wonder.
