Can confirm. One time I injured one of my hands and my coach had to lace me up, and there is definitely an element of "I trust you have a feel for how tight to tie to provide proper support without giving me lacebite."
The way this is forever my favourite moment of episode 8. It expresses so much intimacy and trust, and gives me strong vibes of Viktor preparing Yuuri for battle. He's going to skate in enemy territory, after all.

Unknown Artist, 'The Cumaean Sibyl', oil on canvas mounted on masonite, no date (est. 1600s), French, for sale for est. $2,000 - $4,000 USD at Doyle's Auctions, January 2021; New York, NY, USA.
Inscribed with 'LACEBIT IN FOENO (He Will Lie On Straw)' alluding to the Cumaean Sibyl's purported role as a prophet of the coming of Christ. This belief was based on a passage in Virgil's fourth Eclogue, in which the Sibyl foretells the coming of a Savior, who was identified by Mediaeval theologians as Jesus. (x)

Everything You Need To Know About Ice Hockey Skates
Tumblr media
Every player has a preference for hockey skates. Every person is different in the way they take care of their skates from how they're made to fit them to the care and maintenance involved in maintaining them. This comprehensive guide to everything you should know about your skates.
Lacing
Starting off, laces come in two distinct styles: waxed and non-waxed. For those who like tight fitting skates or wish for the laces to be more tight on specific parts of their boots will prefer waxed laces. Laces that are not waxed are preferred by players who want a more loose fitting boot across the entire. Check out our article fully explaining the different lace types here.
Skate laces can easily be sized easily because they come with a size chart at the back. But, if you can't locate a size chart prior to you buy the lace, here's an overview of lace sizing:
Youth 8.0 - Junior 1.5 skates need 72" laces
Junior 2.0 - 3.5 skates need 84" laces
Junior 4.0 - 5.5 skates need 96" laces
Senior 6.0 - 8.5 skates need 108" laces
Senior 9.0 - 12.0 skates need 120" laces
Once you've chosen the right laces, it's time to connect the skates with them. Some players lace "in-to-out" while others tie "out-to-in," but what's the difference?
Lacing "in-to-out" (pictured left) is a standard way shoes and skates are laced. This type of lacing technique is a way to provide players a snuger fit, but it could cause discomfort. The tongue will be subject to greater pressure from the laces.
Lacing "outside-to-in" is the process of bringing the lace over the eyelet, then going back in. This method will provide more comfort and reduce the risk of lace bite because the tension is applied laterally instead of downwards. Thus, there is no pressure directly applied to the tongue or the top of the foot.
Lace Bite & Blister Relief
Tumblr media
Even in the event that properly fitting skates are worn, athletes can still feel lacebite or blisters. This is particularly true during the process of breaking in. Lace bite happens when skates are laced too tightly and cause "hot spots,"" small blisters or cysts on one or multiple areas on top of the foot. You can eliminate lace bite by altering the way that your skates are laced , or by using gel inserts to treat affected areas.
Elite Hockey makes three different gel pads to provide foot pain relief - lace bite gel pads, Achilles gel pads, and ankle gel pads.
Their gel pads for lace bite are placed inside the tongue in order to disperse pressure and lessen the sensation of pinching caused by skate laces.
The gel pads for the Achilles Heel are situated on the bottom of the boot's heel. They fill up the space that is left in the rear of the skate, and can provide relief from rubbing during the skate's breaking-in process.
Much like similar to Achilles Heel gel pads, the Elite ankle gel pads give an extra level of comfort during the break-in process. Plus, they can prevent the formation of irritation and blisters by filling any gap if your skates aren't quite big.
For a customized relief, players can mix and match any of these gel pads. It could be that' skates may not be appropriately size.
Sharpening
It is crucial to properly sharpen your skates. There are many hollows you can pick from and each will affect how you skate. Before choosing a hollow, skaters must consider their style of play and the rink's conditions on the ice. The chart below lists a variety of the hollows stores can sharpen skates at and the ones with higher numbers being the most sought-after and suggested choices.
A more pronounced hollow (right-side of 1/2" on the chart), will allow players to experience greater acceleration and stopping power however, it will slow down the speed of gliding. Their skates will also be more firmly embedded in the ice. For those who are small or skating on rinks with cold temperatures, a sharper skate hollow is more beneficial.
A hollow that is not as prominent (left side of 1/2") allows skaters to move faster, but not as swift as ice. For players who are larger and who are skating on warmer rinks it is better to avoid "sinking" in the more soft frozen ice.
1/2" is the most suitable hollow for "all-around" because it is neither too sharp or too dull. The 1/2" hollow is considered the industry standard for repair shops. If you aren't sure which hollow you want, just ask your sharpener for a 1/2". Although the 1/2" could be regarded as a "jack of all trades" it's also a "master of all." It is worth changing the size of one hollow in the range of 1/2" like 9/16" or 7/16" to have an even more personalized feel on the ice.
After Care
After each game or practice after every practice, skaters should clean down their holders and steel until dry prior to placing their skates into their bags. Drying the water will prevent the steel from breaking and rusting prematurely.
When the players return to the rink, they should bring their skates along. Aerating the skates can allow them to dry quicker and prevents odors and rust from building up. Players who really want to go above and beyond should also remove their footbeds at the end of each session to ensure that moisture doesn't get in the skates.
Some skaters prefer socks under their skates while others prefer to skate completely barefoot. It's entirely up to you. Players wearing socks are usually more comfortable when skating however, barefoot skaters tend to have an advantage when it comes to agility. Of course, skills will always outperform gear each time, but not having any material between the foot and skate will allow players to really be aware of their edge.

⁉️What is lacebite⁉️ 🏒1️⃣ANSWER: Lacebite is caused by improperly fitted skates. Pain caused by laces shredding the tounge. Your boots are design to wraparound your feet, support your ankles, maximum arch support with no movement while skating. Other causes: ➡️Skates are TOO BIG ➡️Skates purchased ONLINE ➡️Pro stock used skates ➡️Hand-me-downs No matter the cost, your level of skill, proper skating always starts with your feet. Your only connection to ice is 3-4mm of steel. It matters. Skates should be game ready with no waiting times, no break-in period AFTER proper custom fitting. Essan can help in 30 minutes or less. No money back. 😅 #Skates #Fitting #custom #Hockey #Figure #Goalie #HockeySkates #Pain #Feet #Biology #Anatomy #Analog #HockeyShop #BAHR #Albundy #padgic (at Bay Area Hockey Repair & Sharpening) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cd6vp-8vFU0/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Do you have a local hockey shop? Access to equipment managers? Pulling up on your laces & not wiping ice/water off your skates causes eyelet oxidation, ripping and lacebite. That’s OK, handful of us hockey shops are still around to service your gear. #eqm #hockeyshop #skaterepair #hockey #graf #blademaster #iceskate #cobbler #BAHR #padgic (at Bay Area Hockey Repair & Sharpening) https://www.instagram.com/p/CcJSqN5Pj55/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

What do you see? Essan can tell you just by walking in. He doesn’t look for problems, he just points out what’s already there. If that offends you, it should. 100% of skates are not fitted properly even “CUSTOM.” Also, I hate speaking in third person. Neurologist & pediatric surgeon accused Essan of being psychic the other day when he was asked a few questions while refitting his skates. Truth be told, his own feet and background has been key to making corrections. Doc freaked out when he admitted he had old track injuries which explains bone spurs and other pre-existing misalignment issues. Getting to know, asking the right questions will solve the most basic fitting mistakes done worldwide. Don’t get me started on LACEBITE, it’s the no. 1 result of improperly fitted skates. You build relationships for life when customers can see the real value of what BAHR has built over the last decade: Sports start with your feet. #Sunday #Footbed #Alignment #RivetGuards #BAHR #HockeyShop #MadeInUSA #Support (at Bay Area Hockey Repair & Sharpening) https://www.instagram.com/p/CbDxrOlvcUp/?utm_medium=tumblr
