It had been James' idea to go ice skating. The Black Lake had frozen in the recent cold weather. It could be fun, he insisted.

And of course, James' sudden interest in ice skating had nothing to do with the fact that Lily would be there.

Sirius kept these suspicions to himself.

James was uncertain on his feet at first. Clearly, he hadn't considered how wet and cold this enterprise would be. Still, he seemed to be having fun whilst all the while glancing over to where Lily was skating with friends.

Sirius noticed Remus at the edge of the lake, making his way gingerly onto the ice. Peter was watching from the shore, ice skates slung about his shoulders, looking nervously at James who had just fallen onto his behind with a crack.

"Come on, Peter! It's really not that bad once you get out here," Sirius heard Remus say as he skated closer.

He saw Peter shake his head.

"I'll help you," Remus offered, wobbling a little.

"N...no you go on without me," Peter stammered. "I'll think I'll just watch for now."

Remus was so patient and kind to Peter. He was a better friend to him than either James or Sirius was, Sirius thought to himself. But then again, Sirius thought that Remus was a better person than anyone else he'd ever met.

Remus hadn't noticed Sirius skate up behind him. Sirius wrapped his hands about his waist, causing Remus to yelp and stumble as Sirius span him round.

"Bloody hell, Padfoot!" Remus reprimanded. "I could have broken my neck!"

Sirius gave a roguish grin. Getting told off by Remus was one of his favourite things.

Remus smiled despite himself. Sirius took him by the hands, laughed, and pulled Remus onto the ice.
