How Do You Live? (boy and the heron)

just came back from the cinema celebrating Miyazaki's birthday finally watching BOY AND THE HERON i wanted to cry the whole time i was speechless just overflowing with magic the direction divine the many distant shots of Mahito within vast space (which was just magical backgrounds) the music (especially when pelicans started eating the warawara) the lore of it all my heart couldnt take it i just wanna stay inside hayao-san's worlds forever i dont wanna get outtt omg THE SHINYA OHIRA opening scene >_< *pukes stars* the young parallel world KIRIKO jumping on the gigantic fish and slicing it in two till the tail and giving mahito to try and THE GUTS all spilling and burying him under T_T_T_T when the heron first started talking and the fuckin design and voice acting was haunting(ly beautiful) when he was making the bow and the arrow and stealing tobacco and give it to the grandpa when he raised the stone and just the blood started rushing so so so much ?? when he was first crying and there were 2 tears on both corners of the eyes plus one all 5 of them standinggg the parakeets which brought so much more cartoony life lmao the granniesssss and their designs?? when he found his mom and those paper devils just flew around hurting/burying them both till his young version of his mom burned them the warawara for real they just had fun animating them also the crowd scenes also the backgrounds ill say that again i mean my eyessss my soullll is healedddd (of course im gonna go watch it at least 5 more timessss lmao) happy birthday you magical madman of a grandpa i love you with all my heartttt i thank you for everything thank you for existing thank you for raising me and feeding me dreams and eternal fantasy thank UwU forever i love you i have so much more to say about teh movie so much livelinessss when they caught the fish and the sea suddenly was full of insane trees and the boat shadow creatures THE FACT WE GOT TRIPPY SATOSHI KON SCENES when the heron showed mahito his mom and she started melting then the ground swallowed tehmmmmm ughhhhh the corridor to his ancestor who was playing with those blocks im glad i exist every time i existing in your films thank you for creating the safest weirdest most magical places for me to call home

okay okay when his new mother caressed his bandage and she said its her fault she let that happen to him. when the heron made THE FROGS AND MUDSKIPPERS AND another creature climb all over mahito and swallow him till his mother threw the arrow that was the second time i lost my mind completely after the ohira scene T_T

Queens of Beirut

Op 15 mei komt Queens of Beirut uit, een boek vol foto's en persoonlijke verhalen uit de drag gemeenschap in Beirut. Het boek laat zien hoe zeven drag queens - Sultana, Sit Yanna, Narcissa, Latiza, Robyn, Anissa en Emma - zich verhouden tot elkaar, de samenleving en de huidige situatie in Libanon. In samenwerking met Stichting art. 1, IQMF en auteur / fotograaf Renske Diks organiseert Shugar op zaterdag 13 mei om 21.15 uur in LAB111 een programma rondom de release van Queens of Beirut, met een fototentoonstelling, filmvertoning, nagesprek en performance van drag queen Emma Gration.  

Beirut is een van de drie hoofdsteden waar Shugar zich enorm door laat inspireren. Athene, İstanbul en Beirut zijn wat Shugar betreft de queer capitals die historische banden hebben met het Constantinopel van weleer. Na jaren van economische en sociaal-maatschappelijke problematieken en een verwoestende explosie, zijn we ontzettend blij dat Shugar’s focus weer op een van de leidende Arabische queer steden van de Levant ligt en dat we ons weer mogen en kunnen vestigen in Beirut.

International Queer & Migrant Film Festival (IQMF) is een vaste partner van LAB111 en deze Special komt tot stand in samenwerking met LAB111. Dit evenement wordt financieel ondersteund door Queer Network Amsterdam.

Tapis Rouge Filmfestival 2024: Ontdek 25 Franstalige Films in Amsterdam

Ook dit jaar is er weer een Tapis Rouge oftewel het Franse filmfestival van Nederland. Zet de data alvast maar in je agenda want van 26 september t/m 1 oktober kan je gaan genieten van zo’n 25 Franstalige films uit 2024. LI-MA Presents: Switching Code and Clothes Wednesday, 31 May, 2023 at LAB111, Amsterdam (LAB2) Programme: 20:00 On Wednesday 31st of May LIMA presents a screening program I co-curated together with Ka-Tjun Hau. Central to our selection of video works is the notion of code-switching and the role clothes and other visual features play within the concept of identity. Code-switching is the adaptation of various 'languages' in different contexts; how you talk, move, and present yourself to others in various different situations. These adaptations are based on conscious decisions based on individual expression, as well as unconscious survival mechanisms as a means of protection to blend into a dominant culture. With contributions by: Lova Yu (live performance), Julika Rudelius, Wu Tsang, Benny Nemer and Evan Ifekoya.

(1/2) "I saw Monsoon Wedding (2001) by Indian filmmaker Mira Nair, a while ago when I was living in New York and interning for a Dutch journalist, Max Westerman who works for RTL News. I went to see the film with a friend and beforehand I had learned that the film won a prize at the Cannes Film Festival and it was rated with five stars. Besides that, the film’s poster intrigued me because it was very colorful as I expect from Bollywood films, but it also had more of a Western aesthetic. It sort of seemed to be a new approach. The film was very impressive. On the other hand, it had many Bollywood elements such as singing, dancing, rituals, and music. That did come from the wedding situation that it was set in during monsoon season. Friends and family from all over India and the world flew to Delhi for the wedding. They party for two weeks straight and everyone seems to like each other, but beneath the surface, there are some hidden truths. Later in the film, you find out that a rich uncle who paid the studies of some of his nieces and nephews, molested one of the lead characters when she was younger. On/kunst have asked me to give a mini-lecture on conceptual art. Theme of the evening: ‘Begrijpt iemand hedendaagse kunst nog wél?’ (Is there anyone who still understands contemporary art?). .P&G are: 23 photographers, 38 graphic designers, 24 teams, 24 projects. On the 25th and 26th of February 2017 we will show you the result of the collaborative project .P&G, in which more than sixty young photographers and graphic designers have worked on twentyfour different projects. Expect interesting and thought-provoking installations, publications and videos with a great diversity in themes and forms throughout the building of LAB111. A festive opening of the exhibition will take place on Saturday the 25th at 20:00. Saturday 25th February 11.00-03.00 Sunday 26th February 11.00-21.00

A Summer With Studio Ghibli

Ben jij ook zo’n fan van Studio Ghibli? Dan heb jij geluk! Deze zomer is het bij Lab111 A Summer With Studio Ghibli. Dit betekent dat er wel liefst 18 verschillende Ghibli films te zien zijn. De grote diversiteit aan genres betekent dat er voor iedereen wel wat tussen zit. 

Geen idee waar we het over hebben? Studio Ghibli is een Japanse animatiestudio, geliefd door vele vanwege hun schitterende animatie en fantasierijke verhalen. Misschien heb je Totoro weleens op het internet voorbij zien komen?

Vanaf 1 juli kun je kennis maken met deze films, of natuurlijk je favoriete Ghibli film opnieuw kijken! Deze zomer kun je je dus niet vervelen ;)

(2/2) ".... Eventually, Merantau was followed up by The Raid | Serbuan Maut (2011). The montage of this film was just so fascinating for me to see. These films inspired me to do something with film. During my Masters, I tried out documentary filmmaking. I did a project on female martial artists in Jakarta, Indonesia. That’s how I found out that I love making films. I wanted to continue with film after my Masters, but I didn’t know how. Suddenly a friend of mine suggested CinemAsia FilmLAB. I immediately entered both the documentary and fiction programmes, because later in my career I would like to mix documentary with fiction. For my fiction script named Two Socks make one Pair (2019), I am working on a story about a transman who gets cold feet when he’s about to marry the woman of his dreams. Because I am frustrated with the LGBTQ representation of Asian in the media. The script I’m writing is closer to reality.
