(1/2) "I saw Monsoon Wedding (2001) by Indian filmmaker Mira Nair, a while ago when I was living in New York and interning for a Dutch journalist, Max Westerman who works for RTL News. I went to see the film with a friend and beforehand I had learned that the film won a prize at the Cannes Film Festival and it was rated with five stars. Besides that, the film’s poster intrigued me because it was very colorful as I expect from Bollywood films, but it also had more of a Western aesthetic. It sort of seemed to be a new approach. The film was very impressive. On the other hand, it had many Bollywood elements such as singing, dancing, rituals, and music. That did come from the wedding situation that it was set in during monsoon season. Friends and family from all over India and the world flew to Delhi for the wedding. They party for two weeks straight and everyone seems to like each other, but beneath the surface, there are some hidden truths. Later in the film, you find out that a rich uncle who paid the studies of some of his nieces and nephews, molested one of the lead characters when she was younger. Meanwhile, the family continues to place that uncle on a pedestal, because they feel that they owe a lot to him.... – Rishi Chamman ---------------------------------------- A Review by Rishi Chamman. (2/2) ".... Eventually, Merantau was followed up by The Raid | Serbuan Maut (2011). The montage of this film was just so fascinating for me to see. These films inspired me to do something with film. During my Masters, I tried out documentary filmmaking. I did a project on female martial artists in Jakarta, Indonesia. That’s how I found out that I love making films. I wanted to continue with film after my Masters, but I didn’t know how. Suddenly a friend of mine suggested CinemAsia FilmLAB. I immediately entered both the documentary and fiction programmes, because later in my career I would like to mix documentary with fiction. For my fiction script named Two Socks make one Pair (2019), I am working on a story about a transman who gets cold feet when he’s about to marry the woman of his dreams. Because I am frustrated with the LGBTQ representation of Asian in the media. The script I’m writing is closer to reality. The documentary Unicorn Cat (2019) that I made is about a young Indian girl, doing south Indian classical dance in regards to how it connects her to her own heritage and how she feels about living in the Netherlands.." - @NAME ---------------------------------------- A Review by Priscilla Rasyid. (1/2) "The first film about Indonesian martial arts that I ever watched is Merantau (2009), directed by the Scottish Gareth Evans. A very sophisticated film about a young man (Iko Uwais) who uses his skills in martial arts to fight the slave trade. I loved watching Kung Fu films when I was growing up because they displayed Asian characters who resembled me and who were closer to my heritage. I was born in Indonesia, but I grew up in Apeldoorn and during high school, I was like the only non-white person in the class. So back then I wasn’t able to relate with people at school, but also not on Dutch TV and cinema. Except for Mulan (1998), even though she’s actually Chinese. Nine out of ten times I would watch Jackie Chan films. He wasn’t just badass, he was also very funny. I absolutely enjoyed his mix of humor with martial arts. Whereas Bruce Lee was much more serious...." - @priscillarasyid ---------------------------------------- A Review by Priscilla Rasyid. (2/2) "The film's plot is simple, clear and funny. Which is befitting for a children's film. A scene I liked most displays a cook making satay sticks for the two girls, but he suddenly dances with the satay and he makes these funny movements. Another aspect I liked is that the film has a lovely message, which is that you have to empathize and sympathize with others and not only focus on your own wellbeing. Sometimes you need to put your own aspirations aside to help someone who needs more help. And next to that, if you do this, you never know if your biggest wishes still might come true. I was really able to connect with Sam's character. Because I love how Sam enjoys life and how she always knew that she wanted to surf. I also knew at a very young age that I wanted to occupy myself with film and I haven't stopped pursuing my dream ever since." - Anouk Saint Martin ----------------------------------------- Photo and story by Feargal Agard ----------------------------------------- @swazehartog @ggvtveer @rialto_film @lab_111 @kriterionamsterdam @cinemasianl @cinemasiafilmlab ----------------------------------------- #HoFA #HumansofFilmAmsterdam #Amsterdam #netherlands #MaishaKanna #cinemasia #filmfestival #weloveasiancinema #Asia #Asiancinema #KriterionAmsterdam #lab111 #rialtofilm #rialtoamsterdam #rialtofilmtheater #streetphotography #photooftheday #photography #fotografie #indonesia #instamovies #instacinema #instafilm #instagood #kularikepantai #RuntotheBeach #movies #films #cinema #riririza (at Amsterdam, Netherlands) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bucno5rlrbK/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=16kd8bnoonomx

(2/2) ".... I can recognize a lot in Monsoon Wedding being of East Indian-Surinamese descent myself. Living in a variety of worlds where it’s necessary to wear different masks for some people within the family, but also outside of the family depending on which scene you are in. I was really enthused about the film. I began to analyze it while watching the film and the friend I was with suddenly said, “Rishi, you should make films.” He felt that the way I spoke about this film was very passionate and analytical and what he said sounded very convincing. That’s why I ended up working in film. For some of the fund applications, I even used Monsoon Wedding as an example of what I want to convey in my films. Basically the dilemmas and connections of living in two worlds. Even the short film script that I wrote for CinemAsia FilmLAB treats the same subject. This script is about a Mother and her son, who with a yoga priest, tries a ritual that is supposed to convert her son from his homosexuality. They all say that they want the best for him and that they do this out of love, but people actually are damaged by these ritualistic treatments.” – Rishi Chamman ---------------------------------------- A Review by Rishi Chamman. (2/2) “.... For my Master thesis, I focused on motherhood in Dutch films. I coined three specific mother types. The domestic mother, the monstrous mother and the final mother. I continued my research after I graduated. I specialized in dramaturgy and the representation of women and as a script editor, I can even see that low representation of women starts in the scripts. Meaning that female characters are either not layered enough, miss depth or they are an extension of a male character. That’s why I want to stimulate change, by making people more aware of it. They either weren’t aware of it and need to work on it, but if it was meant for the script with a good argument then I have understanding for that. After all, I only help people communicating the story they want to tell” – Gwyneth Sleutel ---------------------------------------- A Review by Gwyneth Sleutel. (1/2) “I worked as the script coach for the fiction FilmLAB of CinemAsia Film Festival. I guided the FilmLAB participants from beginning to end. Step by step, from their first film idea to script. One of my focuses had to do with the representation of women in these scripts. In a workshop class I gave, I addressed a broad perspective of how women are portrayed in mainstream, but also art house films. What are conservative and what are progressive images of women and what does it say about society and the time that we live in. I must say that if we look at the representation of women in Dutch cinema, it still isn’t that great. I base this on the research that I have done. During my bachelor thesis, while studying at the University of Amsterdam, I focused on women’s representation in Dutch romantic comedies, a popular genre." - Gwyneth Sleutel ---------------------------------------- A Review by Gwyneth Sleutel. (2/2) ".... While keeping what I learned from Kakekomi‘s director in mind, I hadn’t entered film school or made any film projects. Along the way, I stumbled on travel videos such as Hong Kong Strong of about six minutes. It’s basically a video sequence of quick shots that show you the culture and people from a Hong Kong. Through another one of Hong Kong Strong’s videos, I discovered how accessible it is to make those videos so I could use it to make my own travel videos as I am passionate about traveling as well. It is around that time that I moved to the Netherlands to live with my boyfriend. It was a sudden shift leaving the Philipines and go to the Netherlands. Quite a culture shock, but I thought it would be smart to document the transition, stories, and experiences that will otherwise quickly fade away. All of this drove me to join CinemAsia FilmLAB where I wrote How to be Dutch (2019) a short film script that tells the story of different women some strong and willing to do anything to survive.” – Maine GaIvez ---------------------------------------- A Review by Maine Galvez Find out more information about the film at CinemAsia.nl ---------------------------------------- Photo and story by Feargal Agard ---------------------------------------- @swazehartog @ggvtveer @rialto_film @lab_111 @kriterionamsterdam ---------------------------------------- #HoFA #HumansofFilmAmsterdam #Amsterdam #netherlands #Philipines #cinemasia #filmfestival #weloveasiancinema #Asia #Asiancinema #KriterionAmsterdam #lab111 #rialtofilm #rialtoamsterdam #rialtofilmtheater #streetphotography #photooftheday #photography #fotografie #Japan #instamovies #instacinema #instafilm #instagood #Eigasai #Kakekomi #movies #films #cinema #masatoharada (at Amsterdam, Netherlands) https://www.instagram.com/p/Buzj7bNF4Q9/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=8lmbzhuzql9e

(1/2) “The reason why Kakekomi (2015) is dear to me is that the director Masato Harada was present at Eigasai 2016, a Japanese film festival that I went to when I was still living in Manila, The Philipines. The film is set in the Edo period and it portrays how difficult it was to divorce for women in those times. The story is based on the novel by Hisashi Inoue. Women would go to an Engyō-ji temple to hide because divorcing was a big taboo in Japan. After the film, there was a Q & A with the director and I remember that I loved film in general so much, but I never thought of working in the film industry. Because in the Philipines it feels so unreachable. It feels like it is something that only the elite can do or for which you need to go to an expensive film school or maybe even be good-looking. I was always just a part of the audience. But after hearing Harada passionately speak about making his film historically accurate, how he dealt with problems and how things during production don’t always go the way they were supposed to be, I began to consider filmmaking. I was impressed to discover how one person was able to direct, oversee, produce and finish the film. I left the cinema theatre that day with a retirement goal.” – Maine GaIvez ---------------------------------------- A Review by Maine Galvez Find out more information about the film at CinemAsia.nl ---------------------------------------- Photo and story by Feargal Agard ---------------------------------------- @swazehartog @ggvtveer @rialto_film @lab_111 @kriterionamsterdam ---------------------------------------- #HoFA #HumansofFilmAmsterdam #Amsterdam #netherlands #Philipines #cinemasia #filmfestival #weloveasiancinema #Asia #Asiancinema #KriterionAmsterdam #lab111 #rialtofilm #rialtoamsterdam #rialtofilmtheater #streetphotography #photooftheday #photography #fotografie #Japan #instamovies #instacinema #instafilm #instagood #Eigasai #Kakekomi #movies #films #cinema #masatoharada (at Amsterdam, Netherlands) https://www.instagram.com/p/Buzihl3ltiE/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=qidcwvp5hkr9

(2/2) "....Devdas is based on a book and about four remake films have been made. I like the 2002 version. I hadn't personally been through something so emotional as Devdas had, but I was so impressed with the way the story was told and the way the actors and especially Shah Rukh Khan acted in the movie. It touched my heart. Then again somewhere I did really understand Devdas' motive and his actions and that is the beauty of cinema that I discovered that day after watching Devdas. Cinema can connect us and show us worlds that we haven't seen or experienced before. In the end, this film inspired me to think about a career in film. Which is why I signed up for CinemAsia FilmLAB where I can work on my fiction screenwriting. Ever since Devdas, it's been my dream to become a film director and one day work with Shah Rukh Khan. It's a dream now, but you never know it might come true." - Fawad Nahimi ---------------------------------------- A Review by Fawad Nahimi. (1/2) "I actually never was a fan of Devdas (2002) actor Shah Rukh Khan, which is a film directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. But in 2002 I was forced by my cousin to watch the film and that is when it all changed for me. It was all because of the love between Devdas, the main character in this film and Parvati also known as 'Paro'. It touched me and I even cried. Devdas and Paro are childhood lovers, but Devdas, due to family pressure, makes a huge mistake by writing a stupid letter to Paro and breaking up with her. After sending the letter, he immediately regrets it, but it is too late. Paro has made up her mind and she marries someone else, and Devdas stays all alone remembering Paro and their childhood love. He is so much in love with her that he spirals downwards and resorts to drinking alcohol to numb the pain and to stop remembering her. His pain is so great that he doesn't see any other way." - Fawad Nahimi ---------------------------------------- A Review by Fawad Nahimi. (2/2) "....The story of Tumbbad (2018) itself isn't a new concept. Like if Shakespeare wrote this I wouldn't have been surprised, because it's a tragedy. Tragedies aren't common in India, because Indian films are more a display of song, dance, romance, and a happy ending. What excites me is that I have been following the development of this film for about 10 years now. Ever since I thought of becoming a filmmaker. I met many filmmakers through social media back then, including one of the directors. It is pretty crazy how many pitfalls they have gone through, but they have persevered through all the drama behind the scenes. Aesthetically I love the film because it's not shot in a classical way with beautifully composed shots. It is handheld with a cinema verite documentary feel, it has good special effects and the camera is able to move around within a 360 degree plain, which makes the film very immersive." - @haiderhussainbeig ---------------------------------------- A Review by Haider Hussain. (1/2) "Tumbbad (2018) is basically a cautionary tale about greed and how it's inherited and passed on within a vicious circle that goes on for many generations within the family where this film is about. The film's story is set in the 1940s and it's based on a southern Indian folktale about a goddess who punished her first son for his greed for gold and food. The main character Vinayak Rao (Sohum Shah) insists on finding the gold from the story that is rumored to be in the palace mansion that they inherited and live in. They end up in dangerous and tragic events and with greed, nobody really wins in the end. (2/2) “....I believe that The Looming Storm as a film is trying to say that no matter how much you focus on achieving success. Things might not always go your way. Especially when you use somebody to achieve this success and hurt that person in the process. I’ve never experienced what the main character went through, but I understand that a person wants to achieve something in life. It just should not be at the cost of someone else. We all have ups and downs, but to me, it’s important to stay positive and face your challenges. (2/2) "The relationship between Bo-Hee and Sungreen is really sweet and funny. They both are opposites of each other, but they complement and help each other to grow up and deal with serious topics such as bullying, death and finding their true selves. Throughout the film, I noticed that Sungreen and Bo-hee get bothered by people who think that they are a couple, and, in this sense, I can relate. Because when I was a kid and a teenager, I only had male friends and everyone thought I was dating them, which was not true. We were just friends, and, actually, we still are.
