if you're in the throes of cosmic despair i cannot recommend museums enough. art or science or history it doesn't matter. oh we're all connected, all of us and everything, throughout all time and space, and no one, no one, no one is alone? awesome. that's what i thought i just wanted to make sure.

Some belated photos from the "Fashioned by Sargent" exhibit at the MFA Boston. My pictures just don't do it justice! I'm not one for hyperbolics, but it literally took my breath away, even with the crowds of people everywhere.
evening dress by the House of Worth (c.1880); owned by Sarah Choate Sears, who Sargent painted in another dress in 1889
reflection of Ellen Terry as Lady Macbeth (1889); costume designed by Alice Comyns Carr and created by Ada Nettleship
evening dress with matching shoes by the House of Worth (c.1895)
Mrs. Charles E. Inches (Louise Pomeroy) (1887); dress made in 1887 and likely altered 1902. Louise was pregnant at the time of her portrait, and if you look very closely, you can see the dress skirt has adjustable panels to accommodate a changing body.

This research, recently published in the journal Nature Geoscience, suggests that studying volcanic ash during eruptions could be used as a tool to forecast tremor intensity.
Continuing work by the research team, which now includes students from the Museum’s Master of Arts in Teaching Earth Science Residency Program, aims to better understand this mechanism at La Palma and worldwide. Read more about their findings in our blog post.

Robe à la française
1750s; Altered 1780s & Late 19th Century
France & England
The ensemble was probably made as a sack and petticoat in the 1750s. In the 1780s, the sack was updated in style. A waist seam was probably added, the skirts reconfigured, and sleeve ruffles removed. The half-stomachers were added at this time and the bodice fronts relined. The back lacing was reconfigured and more eyelets worked.
The ensemble was altered for fancy dress in the late 19th century. Hooks and eyes were added to the bodice stomacher fronts and machine-lace ruffles to the sleeves. The petticoat may have been unpicked at this point.
The petticoat was gathered onto a cotton band after acquisition for Museum display. (V&A)

[Toon x Mobster] Sir toon and his loyal men.
Tumblr media
This comes WAAYY way after Gavriel and Jack's relationship really takes off.
The other members were initially very against Gavriel and Jack's relationship, Gavriel Huffman included. However, Jack is eventually able to earn the respect of the other mobsters after proving himself able to protect both their boss [Gavriel] and the other members of their group, time and time again.
They swore to do him favors and other errands as a compensation for his benevolence. Jack himself didn't mean for this to happen, he just didn't want anyone to get hurt and his kind heart has won the group over in turn.

A room in Can Papiol house-museum in Vilanova i la Geltrú (Penedès, Catalonia).
Since the year 1790 and throughout the 19th century, this was the home of one of the wealthiest families in the small city of Vilanova i la Geltrú: the Papiol family, who owned many vineyards around the city. The house has preserved its 19th century interiors, and nowadays it's a house-museum that allows visitors to see what a 19th century upper class family home was like.
The house includes a library with about 6,000 books written between the 16th and the 19th centuries, as well as a music room, a billiard room, a ballroom where the family hosted music parties and literary meetings, a dining room, the bedrooms, a small private chapel, the servants' rooms, areas for servants to do domestic work and for farmers to do their work, stables, and a little Romantic garden.
