I just think it's funny that apparently Akk's relationship to (school) rules changes depending on the type of guy he has a crush on at the moment -
Akk having a crush on the former head prefect: I'm gonna learn every single rule of this school, I will uphold every single one of them and then I will become a good prefect as well!
Akk having a crush on a "rulebreaker": So, I know that we are not allowed to use phones but this is an emergy, I need to stare at a picture of my future boyfriend enemy kissing my cheek! And I know that technically we have very strict rules regarding school uniforms but my crush enemy gave me his really nice jacket!

Jean Prouvaire things that I don't see being talked about (at all)
Inspired by this Courf appreciation post I made a long while ago where I reread the Brick and wrote down some details I would otherwise forget, things that might be interesting and also more general stuff about the Amis
has a first name
calls himself Jehan (because of his interest in the Middle Ages)
has plants, plays the flute
delicate voice that's also very manly
knows Italian, Latin, Greek and Hebrew but only uses it to read four different poets
wealthy and an only son
loves nature and people
dresses badly
the only Ami who calls Napoleon Napoleon
Greek Mythology enthusiast
"gentle poet"
"One of the most dearest. One of the most valiant."
has a whole chapter dedicated to his death and is the second of the Amis to die
"Long live France! Long live the future!"
(Episode 1: Courfeyrac, Episode 3: Bahorel, Episode 4: Feuilly, Episode 5: Joly, Episode 6: Bossuet, Episode 7: Combeferre, Episode 8: Enjolras, Episode 9: Grantaire)

So, I just wanted to search for a post I remembered on someone else's profile and used the hashtag asexual - and this was the result:
Tumblr media
And this makes it seem like there's a Hidden Object Asexual Game on Tumblr 😂

Feuilly things I don't see being talked about (at all)
The Feuilly episode of my little barricade boys appreciation post series where I reread the Brick and listed some details I would otherwise forget, things that might be interesting and also more general stuff about the Amis.
orphan and worker in a fan factory
earns three Francs a day
taught himself reading and writing, history and politics
has a big heart
his specialties: Greece, Poland, Hungary, Roumania, Italy
going into the revolution with a: "Long live Poland!"
commands the rebels behind the windows of the Corinthe
uses the two hours the Amis get for sleeping to engrave a Long live the peoples into the wall
his biggest fan might quite possibly be Enjolras
making ammunition with Bossuet
the barricade's principal architect
speaks for the other insurgents (when talking with Marius)
Feuilly. Deserves. A. Better. Death. Scene.
(Episode 1: Courfeyrac, Episode 2: Jehan, Episode 3: Bahorel, Episode 5: Joly, Episode 6: Bossuet, Episode 7: Combeferre, Episode 8: Enjolras, Episode 9: Grantaire)

Bahorel things I don't see being talked about (at all)
The Bahorel episode of my little barricade boys appreciation post series where I reread the Brick and listed some details I would otherwise forget, things that might be interesting and also more general stuff about the Amis.
"the best fellow possible"
the beginning of his description honestly sounds to me like he'd make a great pirate
wears daring waistcoats
in his eleventh year of studying
devise: "never a lawyer"
uses teachers as inspiration for caricatures
smarter than he appears to be
has peasant parents and says that that's why they're intelligent
"he sauntered"
connects the Amis with other Parisian groups
has a laughing mistress
is apparently addicted to a specific statue pose (that he also imitates)
very interesting in the eyes of Gavroche
the first of the Amis to die while defending the barricade
(Episode 1: Courfeyrac, Episode 2: Jehan, Episode 4: Feuilly, Episode 5: Joly, Episode 6: Bossuet, Episode 7: Combeferre, Episode 8: Enjolras, Episode 9: Grantaire)

Joly things I don't see being talked about (at all)
The Joly episode of my little barricade boys appreciation post series where I reread the Brick and listed some details I would otherwise forget, things that might be interesting and also more general stuff about the Amis.
twenty-three, studies medicine
le malade imaginaire junior
"Otherwise, he was the gayest of them all."
Jolllly
"[Joly and Bossuet] had everything in common, to some extent even Musichetta." -> make of that what you want but personally I wanna throw a little polyamory positivity! in here
had a catarrh during the strike
drinking wine at nine o'clock in the morning
would go through fire but not through water because he might get sick
worried that Courfeyrac might catch a cold because he didn't bring an umbrella to the revolution
getting philosophical over a cat (also: Joly is canonically a cat person)
examines his tongue while a rebellion is going on around him
Joly. Deserves. A. Better. Death. Scene.
(Episode 1: Courfeyrac, Episode 2: Jehan, Episode 3: Bahorel, Episode 4: Feuilly, Episode 6: Bossuet, Episode 7: Combeferre, Episode 8: Enjolras, Episode 9: Grantaire)

Jack: There's change coming once and for all. You makes the front page and man, you is major news.
Jack and David, while making intense eye contact: Tomorrow they'll see what we are.
Katherine: Oh my, I think I'll better chime in now before this gets too gay.

Oh, my sweet Blush heart - I got curious right now and tried to watch a few scenes of the 1992sies movie in German.
And in the original version of Carrying the banner, there's this moment where Blink sings "I smell money", Crutchy answers with "You smell foul" and Mush comes up to Blink and sings "Met this girl last night."
In the German Carrying the Banner, when Mush comes up to Blink, he sings: "Schön war's letzte Nacht" which can basically be translated to: "Last night was beautiful/nice." And... the fact that he doesn't mention any girl and The Look (TM) he gives Blink make it seem like he's referring to a night he spend with Blink.
And I just needed everyone to know that because now I'm imagining Blush spending nights together, just cuddling and being cute.

Just scrolled through the Newsies tag and accidently read Pinesies instead of Spinesies and now I can't stop thinking about how much pining there is in Newsies fanfics

I just love how, when Jack, Davey and Les are talking after the little Carrying the Banner part that follows The Bottom Line, Race is just casually chilling in the background like: "Sheepshead? I don't know her"

People are always like: "Why do people ship Sprace? They don't even have that much scenes together" but I'm rewatching the 1992sies right now and realised that Jack and Sarah literally kinda-confess their feelings for each other in the second scene we see them together

Watching 1992sies in German, so you don't have to - Part 2/2
(Disclaimer: this commentary is made for entertainment purposes. I actually really appreciate the work that went into translating and dubbing films to make them more accessible to non-english or non-language-of-the-movie speakers)
Part 1/2
"A pair of new shoes with colourful laces"
"Being able to wash yourself with real soap" instead of "A porcelain tub with boilin' water"
Could you please stop doing whatever it is you're doing there? @ Spot's dub
And here goes Blink singing about the mayor's daughter, completely ruining my Blush moment in Carrying the Banner
I am once again asking myself what's going on with Boots' voice when he sings
"The dogs will be shitting on it tomorrow" for "Tomorrow they may wrap fishes in it"
Kloppmann's dub is really good
Why do y'all sound like adults? (We reached the rooftop scene now)
Wow, Jack and Sarah have even less chemistry in the German version (even though the only thing changing is the way they're talking)
They translated the line "So you're afraid there's a wolf at the door" to "(When your little one doesn't love you anymore), When you then think that there's nobody else anymore" [really rough translation here], and this kinda destroys the deeper meaning of the line
(Unrelated to any dub but did Snitch just magically teleport himself during Medda's singing?)
For the line "Push me" that Davey says to Jack, they used "Gib mir einen Stoß" and maybe that's my Javid heart there but this wording sounds a little suggestive
"I object, Your Honour." - "And for what reason?" - "The reason's just Brooklyn." - again, it's sad that the grounds-joke couldn't be used in German
All of a sudden they've gone from calling the Refuge "Heim" to calling it "Besserungsanstalt" and I'm wondering if this should emphasize a change of perception of the Refuge or if they just needed a fancy long word to fill up the sentence space
Pulitzer's "Sit down" sounds so calm that his strong "Do you know what I was doing when I was your age?" makes it seem like he's yelling at Jack for no reason
I only forgive them for taking the deeper emotion out of the Jack/David confrontation (they're basically just yelling at each other) because I quite like Jack's singing
I totally forgot that Spot threatens to murder Jack when he scabs so I had to switch the language back to English for a moment to make sure that the German version wasn't just overdramatizing things
Finally, there are emotions again in a Javid scene (honestly, it sounds like a fight between two lovers)
Also not dub-related but I think it's funny that Jack tells Sarah not to speak too loud so that Weasel won't hear them but then proceeds to print a paper and sing (that's not quiet, sir, even if you start out with whisper-singing)
Why does Once and for All sound so tinny?
You can't even hear them singing over how loud the talking audio is
Side-note: They translated "Once and for all" which would normally mean "Ein für alle mal" to "Jetzt oder nie"/"Now or never" (and I suppose this is because of rhythmical reasons)
And the last thing I wanted to point out since I think it's kinda funny: They translated Walking Mouth to "Wandelndes Sprachrohr". If you translate this back to English, it basically says "Strolling Megaphone" (You're welcome.)

Watching 1992sies in German so you don't have to - Part 1/2
(Disclaimer: this commentary is made for entertainment purposes. I actually really appreciate the work that went into translating and dubbing films to make them more accessible to non-english or non-language-of-the-movie speakers)
Part 2/2
The voice of the narrator at the beginning sounds so deep and grown-up that I really hope that this isn't the real dub of Race
The songs sound so incredibly strange in German, it's like they wanted to put too much words in one line
Update: I guess the narrator's voice wasn't Race's dub but the real dub still irks me
I like Crutchy's voice to be honest
I'm still not over Mush's "Schön war's letzte Nacht" which I already talked about
They literally sing "Welcome to New York" in the German version and I don't know how I feel about that (they also use the word newsboys untranslated... couldn't they've at least used Newsies?)
There's generally a redundant use of the word New York - they even translated the first chorus of Carrying the Banner to "Ain't it great, boys, selling papers in New York. Ain't it great, boys, we're owning the streets of New York."
Now I know what's off - I miss my Newsies dialect... I guess there's no German equivalent for that
Sidenote: I don't know why but I feel like I need subtitles to understand what they're singing at times (spoiler alert: apparently there are no German subtitles)
They use the phrase "total angeschissen" for "Weasel just makes me eat 'em after" which basically translates to "we're totally f*cked"
The dub kinda lacks emotions sometimes and the voices are sorta similar (why does Les sound so mature?)
Davey sounds so insecure when he introduces Jack to his family, it feels like he's bringing his boyfriend home for the first time
And when he asks Jack to stay over, his voice gets literally so soft?
I'm kinda afraid of Santa Fe
Update: it's not as bad as I anticipated, I actually quite liked it
Considering the missing Newsies dialect, I am even under the impression that they're talking in High German so there are times when the Newsies sound way too formal
One good thing: I can finally understand what the Newsies in the background are saying
Maybe it was only the acoustics right now but I think Davey just called Jack Jake
Okay, time to see what they've done to my baby The World will know
I'm sorry but I can't take Davey seriously with that voice - he definitely lacks authority (authority might be the wrong word - how about feelings in general? a will to really say something?)
English names spoken with a German accent sound so amusing
What happened to Boots' voice right now? (His singing voice is definitely something else)
Since I can now concentrate on the music instead of the lyrics I have to admit that I think that it's sometimes more forceful and expressive than in the musical
The endings of the lines never rhyme! (I know that that's not a necessity but it irks me)
Our man Denton!
Noooo! They didn't translate an equivalent to the ambastards!
When Davey tells Jack to talk to Pulitzer, the grown men in the background are kinda loud tbh - go away, unimportant voices!
Denton's dub reminds me of an 'older man' who reads audiobooks in his freetime
Denton's "of course not" when Jack asks for no pictures sounds so sarcastic
No. (My comment on Spot's voice)
"Spot Cunlen"
Another positive thing: I think they handled the translation of Seize the Day very well. The other songs seemed to differ a lot from the original at times
Honestly, when Davey's trying to keep the boys from beating up the scabs, he sounds like that one kid in class that tries to talk but everytime they do somebody keeps interrupting them
"Heim" doesn't sound as serious/bad as "refuge"
"Keine Bange, Brooklyn hält euch die Stange." - I don't even know how to translate this so I'm just gonna leave it here
