How to make great money as a tattoo artist
Tattooing is comparable to most other creative professions. Whether you are a hairdresser, photographer, musician or artist. A newly graduated hairdresser who gets a job in a recognized salon will earn money from day one, but not necessarily get rich. While for an artist it's harder to make money from the start, he must slowly build up a name before getting well paid, and eventually might even become a millionaire, with hard work, a network and a little luck.
Tattoo artists are somewhere between a hairdresser and an artist, at least in my eyes. Yes, we can earn a decent salary from day one as a tattoo artist, and we can build a name and actually earn better than lawyers and such. Everything is all about doing all of the following:
Real effort
The harder you work, the greater the chance that you will be better at what you do and be recognized for it one day. Adding all the energy and love of what you are doing, no matter what it is, chances are that you will succeed. It does not pay to sit on the lazy side if you want to be successful. If you were a singer, you know you wouldn't make any good money if you weren't really good at singing, right? So keep on tattooing, make tattoos for free or super cheap just to make those awesome tattoos that you really love doing, and nobody asks for in the shop. Practice makes perfect.
Promote yourself
Do not be afraid to show yourself and your skills. If you want customers, you must be able to promote yourself. You're in a way a product that is better than many other products. You must be able to show why and in what ways. Simply market yourself, no matter what level you are in, as an apprentice or tattooist. Use social media. The more the better. Yes, there is a lot of work. But there are so many others like you out there that make it even better than you, faster, cooler etc. Should they get all the customers? Or do you want a piece of cake? Then you have to get out there too.
Join the Evolution
Times are changing all the time. One of my greatest idols is Madonna, who has been in the music industry since I was 5 years old. She changes over time and follows the market so that she does not become a "previous trend". What if she would still be creating those typical 80`s hits? It wouldn't work in the long run. I look very up to her and I want to do the same in my industry. I try to follow the evolution, I am learning new techniques, try new equipment, materials, and working methods.
Back in the day, I designed designs on paper, I now make them on Photoshop. Many tattoo artists choose to do things in the "old way" to maintain a certain charm. It's understandable and sweet, but it does not work in my busy everyday life. Should I be able to focus on making the best tattoos I can, it's a good idea to make the working day faster and easier with newer ways. I enjoy coming home to my family before the children go to bed in the evening.
Work efficiently
As I mentioned above, there are changes within working methods, machinery and techniques that help artists to work more efficiently. Like creating designs on photoshop, etc. But it's also a lot about how to spend the day when you're at work. Perhaps you get a cancellation in the last second, what do you choose to do then? Do you go shopping for a few hours? Or do you choose to make a cool design that you want to tattoo? And put it on social media and tempt followers with a great offer? Maybe you can get a new customer who can come in that very same day! What do you think is the most beneficial for your income?
Be Economical
Yes, everyone can make money from the start. I, unfortunately, fell in the trap when I was 20 years old and newly self-employed. When I realized how much I made tattooing, I went straight and spent all the money. I thought I was rich! Eventually, I realized that I had to pay taxes and other expenses came crawling. If you are frugal and save for unexpected bills, and keep back on unnecessary purchases, you will get rich. Simple math really, you earn more than you spend, you just get richer and richer!
Think Business
A lot of tattoo artists, as well as photographers, hairdressers, and other creative service professions, are often way too nice with the prices. They underestimate their own professional value and undermine themselves. Many give free or cheap services to friends and acquaintances, for what? To be kind? Everything you do has a value and has to be paid for. Of course, I'm not talking about when a hairdresser cuts her childs hair at home or when the photographer takes pictures in her best friend's wedding. I'm talking about those daily events. Sometimes I make tattoos cheaper, but if it's through a competition, promotion or something else that lets me use the material for marketing, which also has a value. I was very soft on it before and gave away money, by being nice on the prices. It was only when I calculated on how much I had given away, and the tax department came to collect my debt, that I realized that it's actually a shop and not a friendly club I am running.
You can earn some serious money if you work hard and do what I have mentioned above. How much you can make is unlimited, so it's impossible to say an average amount. The sky is the limit. Make it rain! At our shop Attitude Tattoo Studio, in Oslo, Norway, every artist is fully booked and works very effectively. We have a solid booking system and a very organized shop in general. That way we don't have to bump up the prices too high, and still make a good living tattooing. The Great Devil War movies Dream Cast! (and yes, it includes Mads Mikkelsen as as the Devil, do not worry!)
In case people don’t know, the popular Danish fantasy book series, The Great Devil War, written by Kenneth B. Andersen, is getting a film adaptation. Possibly a series? We don’t know yet. I made this list a bit for myself, but also for @askwhathasthiscometo. It is a dream cast of mine for SOME of the roles in The Great Devil War movies. Some have several actor choices listed:
Lucifer, the Devil: Mads Mikkelsen, Lars Mikkelsen, Martin Brygmann, Kasper Leisner, Mikkel Arndt, Peter Plauborg - this role is practically the most important, it just needs to be perfect! Well, so do Philip and Satina’s, and younger good actors are hard to find and get right, but without an amazing, perfect Lucifer, you have no Great Devil War whatsoever. Does anyone have any other actors to add to this list? Btw, Mads Mikkelsen is bolded here because that is my favorite choice. Another problem, maybe, is that he is getting a bit older now, with a few wrinkles, and Lucifer is described as having skin as smooth as snake skin when he’s not ill (in book 2 The Die of Death). I don’t want to be ageist though, and I am sure makeup or something could help in this department. If anyone doesn’t agree, look here: https://imgur.com/a/6cB55tB , or look at the bottom of this list! Though, is he tall enough?
Lucifax, the Devil’s cat: Nikolaj Lie Kaas. He has the right kind of dry voice to make awesome dry sarcastic deliveries, I think, which Lucifax have a ton of. I asume Lucifax would be all CGI with just a voice actor. Motion capture anyone??
Ravine, the cook at the Devil’s castle: There are a ton of good choices here, so I am not sure I could list any. Maybe Birthe Neumann, Lotte Andersen, Sofie Grabøl, or Lisbet Dahl? Lisbet have that motherly/grandmotherly quality that Ravine has, but maybe she is a bit too old for the role? Again, I am not trying to be ageist.
With Philip Engel (Danish: Filip Engell) and Satina Dargue (Danish: Satina Mørch) the studio may have to discover whole new talents that have not been seen before. They are supposed to be very young in the beginning after all. 13 year olds. Well, Satina is way older, but she is a devil and so ages differently. And she looks about 13 in The Devil’s Apprentice I’d say. Hair colour may also not be such a big problem, as that can be tackled with dyes or wigs. Also, freckles, which Satina has, can also be added with make-up. But these two actors are very important, as they are practically our main characters (besides Lucifer, we all know we’re really reading for that dude!). Philip’s actor must be able to portray the AGGRAVATINGLY BARF-INDUCINGLY good and polite boy, who you actually want to see get hurt in the beginning. He must be able to be pretty deadpan in regards to his training in evil, where he often just gives the Devil a simple “No. Can’t do that.” Or something to that gist. But he also must be able to portray the character in a rather dark, mature and evil manner. Well, maybe not mature. Angsty? Haha. And as we progress in the series, he needs to be able to portray the character more and and more maturely, and darker, as the dark events happening to him in Hell starts to reflect on his living self. He must be able to portray his character very angrily too, for the last two books especially.
God: Really not sure :O Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm... This will actually be a rather difficult character to cast. In the books he seems to look old but still rather strong and fit. Like he is ancient but in an impossibly good health. Strong, but old.
Death / Mortimer: Also not quite sure. Torben Zeller? Henning Jensen? Jesper Christensen? They can also get a slightly younger actor and just teach him to talk with a more dry and “older sounding voice”, and use make-up and prostethics to make him look super ancient. Though not too young please.
Demeona Dargue (Demeona Mørch): Sidse Babett Knudsen maybe.. Or Julie Berthelsen maybe, though she has only appeared in two movies so far and is mainly a singer. The character must be exceptionally beautiful, but also very warm-hearted in her manners. And stern when she needs to put Blackhorn in his place.
Blackhorn Dargue (Sortehorn Mørch): Mikkel Vadsholt. Nicolas Bro. Nis Bank-Mikkelsen (Nis would be soooo cool in this role). I assume the character would be all CGI. I mean, gragorns, which Blackhorn is one of, are practically the height of a house, very wide and huge. The horns of Grumblebeard, who’s also a gragorn, are as long as Philip’s arm and as thick as his thigh.
Grumblebeard, gatekeper of Hell (Skumleskæg): Not sure either, but this is also a very important role to nail. Would be a voice role too, like Blackhorn, as Grumblebeard is also a gragorn. But man, does the CGI in this movie have to be super convincing! It would be a very expensive project. Maybe Maipo can involve a Hollywood studio and some Hollywood investors? :D I mean, they could dub the movie afterwards and make a ton of money on it as well.
If anyone can think of any other actors/actress, or another character and an actor/actress that fit them, let me know!
The image of Mads Mikkelsen that is supposed to convince you of his role as Lucifer:
Or this:
Hannibal set me up to think Mikkelsen is perfect for the role of Lucifer.
Also, GO read these books now people! They are some of the biggest things in modern Danish literature, and you don't wanna miss it!

Did you know in Turkish translations of RA the name of the series is "Gölgelerin Efendisi" which means "The Lord of the Shadows"? Before reading the books I thought they were about dark magic and stuff bc of the title lol. Do you know any other different names in other languages?
oh that’s so cool! I didn’t know that, but it does make the series sound very mysterious and more intriguing haha
In Dutch we call it the “Grijze Jager”, which means “grey hunter” and refers to the green-and-grey cloaks of the Rangers!
In German, the series is called “Die Chronieken von Araluen”, which means “chronicles of Araluen”, which I like because it’s broader than just Will.
In French, it’s known as “l’Apprenti d’Araluen”, meaning “apprentice of Araluen” and can I just say that I love the alliteration 👀 also it makes me feel like I’m Araluen’s apprentice for some reason lmao
Poland calls it “Zwiadowcy” which, if I remember correctly, means “scout/scouts” so that’s quite similar to Ranger I suppose!
Norwegian (I think it’s Norwegian anyways) has a title similar to Turkish! It’s called “Skyggens Lærling”, which I’ve been told means “the apprentice of the shadow” which is also super cool!
“Hraničářův učeň” then is the Czech translation, and any Czech on here may correct me if I’m wrong, but that seems to translate literally to “Ranger’s Apprentice”!
The last one I *know* is the Lithuanian translation, “Žvalgo Mokinys”, which I thought meant something like “apprentice of the scouts”.
Pretty cool to see all the different translations!
#i love getting to know it in different languages!#rangers apprentice#ranger's apprentice#ask redrose#ask redrosearrow#i have all these in my insta bio#and have had them there for years haha#that’s why i sorta know some of them

få/gi noen en lærepenge to be taught/teach someone a lesson
få/gi noen en advarsel (for framtida), gjøre en dyrekjøpt erfaring
get / give someone a warning (for the future), have an expensive experience
Han må bare få en lærepenge så han forstår at det er konsekvenser for oppførselen hans. He just needs to learn a lesson so he understands that there are consequences for his behavior.
Origin
A (lærepenge) was in the Middle Ages money that one had to pay to a craftsman to get an apprenticeship. If you wanted to become a craftsman, you had to have a contract with a master and also pay a certain amount to be hired as an apprentice and trained as a journeyman. This was called 'lærepenge' in Norwegian. The phrase seems to have been used as early as 1743 by the Danish-Norwegian bishop Erich Pontoppidan.
