Just thinking a bit in the contrast between Nela and Rhaq'a. Both are fellow mages of a subtype that's known for being very educated and intelligent, but their relationships with education are... very different yet similar.

I mean, Rhaq'a learnt to read and write at freaking 19 years old whilst working in a freaking caravan. He has no formal education and, even if he uses jobs characterized for being educated, he essentially only knows what's directly relevant to his line of work. He is interested in learning more, but his life is so hectic he doesn't have the time to cover anything that isn't immediately useful.

It is absolutely a sore spot for him. There is so much he would like to cover but no time for it. Being surrounded by Sharlayan Archons only makes the frustration worse at times, especially so when he gets treated essentially as dumb muscle (nothing further from the truth).

His family educated him... in how to survive in a forest in the middle of nowhere. Learning letters would have been a waste of time from their perspective.

Nela meanwhile had formal education handed to her in a silver plate, and yet they failed to educate her in what she truly wanted to know and rejected her interests as wasteful. She had to step away from school to find mentors willing to help her explore her interests and learn about her personal field of study in her terms.

Huh. I may be actually feeling a theme here.
