Absolutely hate when I'm reading a self-help, motivational book about pursuing your passions, and the author fails to mention the financial and/or social status privilege that allowed them to pursue their passions and build successful entrepreneurial careers out of their dreams in the first place.
Like nope, Miriam, it's not just "I was miserable at my 9 to 5 job so I made the jump and quit to pursue my art, and lo and behold, now I have a six figure self-made business all while being a mom of two". You're forgetting something: your fucking husband also had a high-paying job that allowed you to even consider quitting your own high-paying job while living in New York City and having two daughters to take care of. You had something most of the people reading your book do not have: pre-existing wealth privilege. Bye.
When you have financial security, experimenting with an art career that may or may not fail, while all your needs are met, is not the same as struggling to survive with a regular 9 to 5 and trying to pursue an art career on the side.
Then they have the audacity to write any variation of "if you're not taking these big risks to pursue your dreams, you simply don't want them bad enough". I swear all these gurus have that line in their books.
#these books infuriate me sometimes#I keep reading them because they do inspire me BUT like I said they also infuriate me#because while I can make the distinction in my mind that these people already HAD privilege#before they decided to pursue careers in the arts#there are LOTS of people reading these books feeling like failures because apparently they simply “don't want it badly enough”#I think the only book like this I've read that made it clear that you need support and some people will achieve more with less talent etc#due to their connections and privileges#is the book “The Unfair Advantage” that book is good and realistic#the only one I think does shoot at the core issue#that unfair advantages exist#and it helps you see what in your life can possibly work as an unfair advantage unique to you that you can use#Totally forgot the names of the authors but it's written by two guys#one of them is Indian I think his name is Ali something...#Update: Looked up the names. They are Ash Ali and Hasan Kubba#But yes that book is good#creatives#creative entrepreneurs#art#careers in the arts#indie artists#indie singers#money gurus

ok my first thought was knafeh (shredded phyllo pastry with cheese thats covered in syrup) bc its yummy and delightful (esp with tea!) but. thats a dessert so idk if it counts asdfghjkl

Only the Best for You
a/n: this is my entry for the writing contest (very last minute I know I'm sorry) but uhhhh @cvlutos and @merotwst enjoy ig?? sobs

"Y/N! The sun isn't that bad. You're the one that wanted to go to the beach." Jamil stands outside your car door, repeatedly knocking on the window. You sigh dramatically, pretending to fall asleep.
"Can't hear you I'm asleep," you yell from inside the car, and Jamil feels emotions he hasn't felt since he attended Night Raven College.
You had mentioned once, offhandedly, that you wanted to go to the beach but you never had time. It was easy to plan your birthday from there. However, now that you're actually here, you refuse to get out the car due to "the sun being too sunny."
"You can't be in there all day, Y/N. I have the food, and sooner or later the car will run out of gas. At which point you will be stuck in the heat with no A/C and no way back home. Which would you prefer, habibti?"
At that, you gingerly unlock the door, opening it slowly and stepping out to meet the sea breeze. Jamil seems satisfied with your decision, a shit-eating grin beginning to curl on his cheeks.
"Shut up, Jabeel." Although your cheeks burn at the slight embarrassment of losing this battle against your boyfriend, you can't hide the smile from just how beautiful the beach looks.
"See it's not that bad, now is it?" Jamil reflects your smile as he grabs your hand and pulls you along behind him, leading you down the steps to the sand below. Your sundress is slightly pulled by the wind, and if you had to guess, you and Jamil probably looked like the album cover of a cringe EP album.
"It's not that bad but the sun is already baking my skin. What are you gonna do when I turn into an emaciated shrimp?" You taunt as Jamil lays out a towel for the two of you to sit on.
"I'll protect you with my life. Are you finished complaining now?" Your boyfriend is so clearly fed up with your antics, but you know he wouldn't have it any other way. After all, who else would bring such loving chaos into his tense life?
"I suppose. Will you get into the water with me or are you gonna be a deadpan party pooper the whole time?" You sit on the towel, helping Jamil set out your favorite foods that he's made for you.
"How am I the party pooper when I had to threaten you to get out the car?" He raises an eyebrow and you simply shrug. Jamil heaves out a sigh before taking a seat next to you, pressing a kiss to your temple.
"You are the most irritating person I have ever met. But, I love you. and happy birthday. Now let's eat so we can go swimming." The smell of spices and sugar bit through the air, blending with the ocean breeze.
"Okay but first, what did you make me? I think you should tell me in a very fancy fashion since it's my birthday and all, y'know." You nudge his arm playfully, and Jamil shakes his head in surrender.
"Fine. I recall your saying you didn't much enjoy eating spicy foods when it's warmer, so I stuck to more savory meals for you today. We have some mouslian kubba, with pomegranate molasses in this little box here," he points to a clear glass container next to the bread and meat dish, "and here is some makhlama, with the accompanying tannour bread. I do want to say you are extremely odd for enjoying breakfast dishes in the later parts of the day."
You simply shrug, mouth already watering at the food laid out in front of you.
"You chose to make it, so deal with it. If the food is good, you should enjoy it whenever you want, I think. Ooh what're these cube things right here?" The square desserts decorated with what looked to be coconut flakes were stacked onto each other prettily.
"This is the one I made for you a few months ago. Halawa dhein. This is our dessert for today." You smile before tackling Jamil in a hug.
"You're the best, Jamil. Thank you so much for remembering all this. You've already made this birthday perfect."
Jamil ducks his head, feeling slightly flustered at the sudden praise.
"Of course...only the best for you." You can barely hear the last part, so you lean in closer to your boyfriend.
"What was that?"
"Nothing. Time to eat."

thanks for reading !

Have you tried Juma Kitchen?
British-Iraqi chef Philip Juma brings traditional Iraqi cuisine to London's Borough Market.
Try classic dishes such as fattoush, alongside his signature handmade ‘kubba’: fried and braised stuffed dumplings in a variety of textures, shapes and flavours.
Specials also include Dolma and vegan options such as warming bamia okra stew. All dishes are made with the finest ingredients and are truly delicious.

Any Headcanons about Hana's day to day life? Does she have hobbies, favorite foods, mannerisms etc?
Hana's biggest hobby would be cheerleading, she's been a competitive cheerleader since she was in middle school and pursued it into college. She hasn't always been welcomed with open arms but she's stuck with it. Her favorite food has to be an Iraqi dish her father makes called kubba saray.

Basically there are four biographies of Barry: Isobel Rae (1958), June Rose (1977), Rachel Holmes (2002, updated intro 2020) and (Hercules) Michael du Preez & Jeremy Dronfield (2016). There is also Ann Heilmann’s Neo-/Victorian Biographlia and James Miranda Barry: A Study in Transgender and Transgenre which isn’t a biography but does focus on him. I’ve read the first three and am…in the process of reading the last two (Dronfield gets on my nerves and Heilmann’s is full of academic jargon that I amn’t familiar with so it’s slow going. Interesting but just takes brain power.)
The first two - Isobel Rae and June Rose - are not what you’re looking for and so far du Preez and Dronfield is a bit too disguise-y persona for me. I have since realised it’s flawed (not many footnotes/sources given if any) but I really enjoyed Rachel Holmes’s biography. I found it respectful and it’s probably a decent starting place if you do want to read a biography of his life.
However. These two articles by du Preez - Dr James Barry: The early years revealed (2008) and Dr James Barry (1789-1865): the Edinburgh years (2012) are really good and are the basis for a lot of what is in the beginning of his biography just without Dronfield’s prosaic input. I also really like this article by Mariel Tishma from, I believe, 2020 - A surgeon and a gentleman: the life of James Barry and this article from 2001 [The Life, Work and Gender of Dr James Barry Md (1795-1865)] by A. K. Kubba has a lot of info though from memory I think he leans more into the intersex theory.
E.E. Ottoman (aka David Obermayer) kept a blog (Notes On A Gentleman) where he did focus more on the trans man angle and what it meant looking at Barry through that lens. From what I remember it would be best to have at least a basic knowledge of Barry’s life before reading his work.
Happy reading! I hope something there interests you but feel free to DM me if you want to discuss Barry further - I’m always happy to share what I’ve found about him.
(Things to keep in mind: most things about Barry are #girlboss; he most likely didn’t have any middle names no not even Miranda; that photo of a distinguished gentleman isn’t James Barry.)
Y'all I just did this amazing Pride Tour one of the Edinburgh tourist traps is putting on and it was actually pretty good and anyway I just discovered that Dr. James Barry and I have something in common.
(Namely: he also came to this university and immediately transitioned to male while becoming a doctor, though his experience was, uh, clearly much more dire.)
Anyway now I'm looking for book recs: does anyone know of a biography that handles his gender identity respectfully? I'm not necessarily looking for "proof this person was trans" since I'm not a fan of that approach to historical figures, but an examination of facts under a modern queer lens would be amazing. Please, please nothing that portrays him as a girlboss.
Articles, adaptations, biographies-- anything. I'd really like to read more.
#VQT - anything to add?#dr james barry#caint#those last two points you can find expanded upon in posts linked in my pinned post#I like to be wordy about barry you’ve probably noticed
