It's WIP Wednesday and I have been working a lot on 'Nicky Connors Part 4' (fight scenes my beloathed) so here's a longer extract!

“So this Halloween thing,” she said, once they’d composed themselves. “You got any ideas?” “I refuse to believe you’ve never been to a Halloween thing before.” “I’ve been trick-or-treating, but I can’t exactly wear a cheap dollar store costume to a high school event, and I like to stand out.” “We noticed.” Bobby said dryly. “Still, Johnny had a point - it��s not such a big deal.” “What are you guys going as?” “Probably whatever we feel like.” “Helpful.” “I thought you just said you’d like to stand out.” “I figured we could co-ordinate a little bit, unless I just show up as a witch.” “One letter out.” Dutch muttered. Nicky threw her empty fry carton directly at his head. “Hey.” “Asshole. Just because you know I’d have the best costume out of the lot of you.” “Are you sure you don’t just want a broomstick to hit people with?” Tommy asked, sniggering. “You could probably use Halloween as an excuse.” “Yeah, except a witch doesn’t need to hit people, she can just curse them.” Nicky pointed out. “I’ve no intention of hitting anyone unless they try and hit me first, because then it becomes self-defence – I’d have a broom because it looks the part.” “I think you could pull it off.” Johnny said, finishing his soda and crumpling the can, chucking it into the bin. “But I’m gonna call bullshit on you having the best costume – you’ve not seen what Bobby can rustle up.” “That so, huh? You holding out on me, Brown?” “I’m not exactly a costume designer and I’d have no idea where to start with a Halloween one.” He protested. “You’d be better off splashing out on a shop one.” “That brings us back to the problem of not standing out, though.” “You’ve still got a couple weeks.” Jimmy said. “I’m sure you’ll think of something.”

“Miguel was nearly killed!” He snapped. “Keene being in juvie isn’t enough, they all have to pay for it—” “By that logic I should be going after you and the rest of your classmates because Tory hospitalised my sister.” Sarah said coldly. “And yet here I am, not pressing charges.” “That’s different.” Hawk retorted. “Besides, you’ve not even pressed charges against Tory, so why should I believe you—” “Because Elaine wanted to help her and knew she’d only done this because of your dojo.” Sarah pointed out – no way she was telling him they were related. “And you’re avoiding what I said. Robby Keene is serving his sentence. Daniel LaRusso shut down Miyagi-Do. Johnny Lawrence is focusing on helping Miguel Diaz. Several students have been suspended or taken out of the dojos entirely. Almost all those responsible for the brawl and its consequences are being held accountable one way or another, so what’s your point here, Moskowitz? Who can you possibly want to go after?” “Fuck you!” Hawk’s eyes blazed at her. “Cobra Kais don’t show mercy! One of our own nearly died and there’s no coming back from that, and Kreese says—” “Oh, yeah, Kreese.” Tory snarled. “You mean the man who encouraged me to go after LaRusso in the first place and stomped all over Sensei Lawrence’s lessons behind his back? Give me a break, Hawk, he doesn’t give a shit about us, and the sooner you realise that the better.”

I also tried rewriting my Nyssa x Dev x Lyta Krypton fic - only to find that does need a rewatch as while I watched S1 a few times I've only seen S2 the once, so I do need to refresh...but here's a snippet anyway!

It didn’t make any sense. Zods had a strong sense of duty to Kandor, that was true, but Dru-Zod was not what Kandor – not what Krypton – needed, because whatever he said he did not have the people’s best interests at heart. No, this was about power, about enslaving the rest of the universe to prove Krypton’s might – to prove his might – and surely even Lyta’s sense of familial duty and responsibility couldn’t have blinded her to that. It was yet another foundation ripped out from under her, and all she could do was focus on protecting her child and helping Val’s rebellion, six months organising, rebelling, fighting, retreating, recruiting— Six months later, Adam Strange turned up alive. His zeta-beam device had transported him away at the very last second, and he’d ended up in one of Brainiac’s frozen cities…which turned out to be one of his cities, with a statue of Dru-Zod in the centre of it, and Nyssa wasn’t sure whether to laugh or cry over the fact that Zod was apparently going to succeed, but ultimately Brainiac would come for everything anyway. From Adam’s perspective, he’d only been gone a few hours as opposed to the six months it had been on Krypton, and even though he made light of it… The time skip, his failure to protect his planet, and Seg’s loss were weighing heavily on him. Oh, he pretended it didn’t, deflected Val’s enquiries  – constantly made quips, wisecracks, terrible attempts at flirting with Jax-Ur – but Nyssa could see the mask for what it was, recognised that underneath the humour was someone whose hurts ran deep and the only way he could cope was through humour.

the argo trials: clothing

Ignore everything ever shown about Krypton's clothes for my fic because I hate them all. So here's what I think the vibe should be:

Long coats and warm high neck uniforms because it was supposed to be a cOLD WORLD on the brink of ending (a couple of versions show Krypton to have a cold climate and little flora and fauna because they used up their resources so I'm going with that)

So, it's mostly a mix between Syfy's Krypton clothes and other versions they've shown of Kryptonians on cwsg

but because I thought they were boring I made up:

kehlish or honors, which are given to a kryptonian after a worthy deed.

They're useful to know how important or relevant a person is on Krypton. Say, they would be given to someone in the Military Guild after winning a battle (similar to how military men get their medals). They'd be given to someone in the Science Guild after making a new discovery or creating something new and useful. And so on.

They're sewed or embedded into their clothes and each one is different to the other, either in form or in color.

For example;

Kara's honors are stars on her long blue coat, kinda like this but instead of flowers, stars (1) while Zor-el's (2) and Alura's (3) would look like this:

Great!!! I’m gonna share some facts about my Krypton OC Ashley Tanner:

1. She’s originally from the UK - specifcally Kent -  but moved to Detroit with her aunt in 2008 after her parents died.

2. She met Adam Strange a year later and they quickly became firm friends, Ashley soon coming to see him as the big brother she always wanted, and he accepted her gender identity without question.

3. She is a big fan of Queen and David Bowie.

4. Though she took Adam’s side back on Rann, she still misses the place and especially Alanna, who she always hoped would end up becoming family.

5. She is extremely strong-willed and - unbeknownst to her - has strong mental shields as a result.

6. She has no interest in romance - so long as she has Adam (and later Seg) in her life, that’s all that matters.

Updated Superman mythos changes part 1

Smallville is in New Mexico instead of Kansas (though it's still in the Boonies)

Metropolis is in California instead of Delaware, mostly because I wanted to kind of wanted to make it more like old LA in that it's this city advertized as the shining city on a hill and "the place to be" that destroys you once you're there

Ma and Pa Kent's names have been changed from John and Martha to Jerry and Mia

adding onto that, Jerry is Jewish on his mother's side with Mia is black, and Mia's name is "Dunn" instead of Clark (as a nod to Siegel and Shuster's short story "Reign of The Superman" and yes I renamed John to Jerry as a not to the former, and to top it off his mother's maiden name was Siegel)

Jerry was born and raised in Smallville by his parents Vincent and Jessica Kent

Mia was from Metropolis raised by her Aunt Edith and Uncle Bill, she ended up moving to Smallville after meeting Jerry when her car broke down on a road trip near the town

Kryptonians evolved a form of touch based telekinesis (or "Tactilekinesis" as it's called) to actually be able to stand up, move and walk around on Krypton (a world with 10-11x the gravity of Earth) and this ability is fueled by solar radiation, and despite their sun Rao being much dimmer and smaller, if one were to view the everyday strength of Kryptonians on their homeworld it'd look like a race of Captain Americas basically, now take a Kryptonian away from Krypton and to a planet with 0.1x its gravity and a star that is several times brighter and larger than Rao, and I think you can guess the obvious result

adding to that, Tactilekinesis also gave them the ability to keep themselves at consistent temperatures, which is why Heat Vision and Ice Breath are a thing (though Clark may eventually learn how to channel this ability in ways other than those two)

Clark is more heavyset and chubby (like a bear or a strongman)

Krypton was basically a utopia, and instead of Noble Houses it had a system that could be called Guild Socialist Council Democracy (the means of production were owned by the workers, every major labor force had a guild and each guild was represented on a council)

Said Utopia was born from a revolution against an oppressive city-state system (probably like the versions of Krypton seen in Man of Steel, Byrne's run and the Syfy Krypton series)

Much like in Birthright, The "S" is still a Kryptonian symbol, but isn't meant to be the crest of The House of El or anything, it's meant to be the symbol of The Revolution and eventually all of Krypton

the planet was destroyed by Brainiac, who here is basically just The Sentients from Warframe (sent to another star system to colonize it and then came back and killed its creators)

Jor El discovered Brainiac's intentions when he tried checking on its progress, and when he tried to show The Council, they didn't believe him because Brainiac covered its tracks

The only council member that was on his side was Vril Dox, Representative of The Science Guild, Jor El's mentor and creator of The Brainiac Program, while he was still somewhat skeptical of his pupil's claims, he knew he wouldn't be reacting this way if there wasn't at least a good amount of truth to what he said

Lara was in the military guild (admittedly not a big change since she also was in The New 52, but I still like it as it makes her her own person)

At some point Krypton was visited by Green Lantern Tomar Re, and they learned quite a bit about the wider universe from him, including quite curiously, a distant planet called Earth with sapient life nearly identical to Kryptonians, and had managed to produce one of the greatest Green Lanterns to ever exist named "Alan Scott"

Jor, Lara and Vril teamed up to try and save as many people as they could from Krypton's destruction, they managed to change the course of The Starship Argos from The Colu System to Earth, but that wouldn't change the fact so many people on Krypton would die

In the end, they only had enough resources (including a Phantom Zone crystal/piece of Black Kryptonite they had stolen) to create a small ship that could only fit one very small passenger... Jor and Lara's son Kal El

instead of Kryptonian Women having their father or husband's first name as a middle name, all Kryptonian children have the names of their parent of the same sex (with some exceptions and caviats but we'll get to that) as their middles names until they reach adulthood (for example Clark's full Kryptonian name when he was born was "Kal Jor El")

because of the rule listed above I've had to change a couple things, for one, Zor El is now a woman but Alura is still one too, and Kara was born via something called a "Birthing Matrix" that can take one or more people's DNA and incubate a child

a Similar process was done to conceive Zor and Jor except that their parent Seyg (haven't decided their gender yet) opted to be a single parent

Kara and her family were colonists on The Starship Argos, but before the ship could make it to Earth, it was intercepted by the forces of Warworld, with only a few colonists managing to escape via pods, one of them being Kara, and thanks to the boost from her Baby Cousin flying through The Phantom Zone in that corresponding area (Still working out the details there) she was able to get out of there at near light speed heading towards Earth. of course... it would still mean she had to wait decades before she could get to Earth

hi! 2, 16, and/or 41 for the "get to know your fic writer" game?

2. Do you plan each chapter ahead or write as you go?

Little of column A, little of column B. I have the general shape of a story planned, and I write things like [introduce this character] or [insert action scene where they do this and that to set up this and that], but I keep it flexible because of the way the story can develop when writing it. For example, originally the Tara time loop was going to have different loops focused on pairing her with different members of the Team and Outsiders to get to know them more. As I wrote the story, I realized that didn't quite work logistically or motivationally. But the general themes are there.

16. How many fic ideas are you nurturing right now? Share one of them?

For active WIPs, I have Tara Time Loop and Outlaws. I also have one where Khaji Da hacks phones in my WIP folder, and an AU where Gregor has powers.

For fic ideas, I've always wanted to write a New Krypton arc using the version of Kandor from Syfy's Krypton: Seg and Jayna essentially in charge of Kandor, having to rebuild it from the mess the Voice of Rao and Brainiac made of it while negotiating with Earth. Being a Zod, Jayna isn't really popular on Earth but she's learning to rebuild and to try and redefine the Zod legacy, while working through the toxic view of honor that has passed through the generations.

41. Do you tend to reread fics or are you a one-and-done kind of person?

I reread. God help me I reread @chancecraz Of Kings, Queens, and Pawns which is hundreds of thousands of words. I've rereade @championofnyx's Prince of Embers. @hedgiwithapen has Damn It Hedgi Day ficlets, one of which I reread an uncountable number of times to make fanart for. I can't think of a work of @parvumautomaton I haven't reread. I reread my own fics, both during writing and after putting them up. Part of it is sometimes I'm just not in the brainspace to go deep diving for something new and interesting, sometimes it's because I have a particular itch for a work and only one work will sooth that. (hence why I've reread pretty much every Brion focused fic on AO3, including @haveahearttinman's Unequal and Allies of Unknown Character).

Chances are, if I recommend a fic it's one I've reread or am willing to reread. And I didn't list all of my fav fic authors here.

Harry zieht um und damit bleibt SyFy nicht mehr viel Ruhm - Der Sci-Fi Channel und seine Geschichte

Fans von "Resident Alien" können sich bekanntlich auf eine vierte Staffel freuen (deutschsprachige Fans kennen bisher eher vor allem Staffel 1, die einsam auf Netflix streamt, und nun frisch Staffel 2, die auf DVD erschienen ist und so vor einem Monat unter so manchen Christbaum zu finden war), doch es gibt ein paar damit verbundenen "abers". Erstens wird es noch eine Weile dauern bis die Staffel kommt und zweitens ... wird die vierte Staffel nicht mehr wie die bisherigen drei Staffeln auf SyFy laufen, sondern wegen dem großen Erfolg auf USA Network ausgestrahlt werden, wo sich die Serie mehr Leute ansehen sollen (was übersetzt heißt, dass Staffel 4 wohl die letzte sein wird, weil die Fans, die Serie nicht mehr finden werden, und neue Zuseher kaum in die 4. Staffel dieser doch nicht unkomplizierten Erzählung einsteigen werden).

Damit ist das aktuelle Programm von SyFy auf mehr oder weniger zwei bis drei Genre-Serien reduziert, die uns interessieren, und das erinnert uns an den traurigen Status der aktuellen US-Fernsehlandschaft, und das wiederum ist ein guter Anlass sich an bessere Zeiten zu erinnern - an Zeiten, in denen der Sci-Fi Channel alias SyFy die Heimat der beliebtesten und besten Gerne-Serien war, die von dort aus auch den Rest der Welt erobert haben (okay, fairer Weise muss man sagen, dass eine Menge dieser Serien eigentlich kanadische Produkte waren, die einfach für das US-Publikum auf dem Sci-Fic Channel ausgestrahlt wurden, aber trotzdem). Natürlich hängst diese Entwicklung eben auch damit zusammen, dass der Sender in den letzten Jahren zunehmend Zuseher eingebüßt hat, aber das geht natürlich Hand in Hand mit dem schrumpfenden Angebot. Und nicht nur dort - wie ich schon öfter erwähnt habe, gibt es kaum noch Genre Serien - egal wo und von wem, weil keiner mehr Geld darin investieren will. Und wenn dann doch mal eine neue kommt, wird sie wie "The Ark" schon im Vorfeld verlacht, weil sie "ja nur eine SyFy-Serie ist".

Nur eine SyFy-Serie? Wie letzte Woche im Fall von The CW, blicke ich diese Woche auf die größten Hits und Leistungen, die vom SyFy-Channel produziert wurden:

Erfolgreichste Franchise: Stargate (SG-1 landete dort ab Staffel 6, Atlantis und Universe liefen dort)

Gelungenste Rettungsaktion: Sliders (Staffel 4 und 5 liefen auf dem Kanal, und nach der inhaltlich etwas fragwürdigen dritten Staffel ging es mit den Skripts eindeutig wieder bergauf nachdem die Serie eine neue Heimat am Sci-Fi Channel fand)

Ungewöhnlichste Co-Produktion: Farscape (mit einem australischen Sender gemeinsam produziert, wie das zu Stande kam ist bis heute irgendwie allen außer denen, die dabei waren als diese Fusion entstand, unklar)

Ungewöhlichstes Remake: Sanctuary (ursprünglich eine Web-Serie, fing Amanda Tapping mit ihrer Serie durch Geld von CTV und SyFy quasi noch mal von Vorne an und behielt aber nicht nur den Cast sondern auch die seltsamen CGI-Kulissen bei)

Am meisten verschwendestes Potential: Caprica (nach nur einer Staffel war bei diesem Battlestar Galactica Spin-Off Schluss, obwohl die Serie besser war als die überhypte Muttershow)

Blödeste Canncelation: The Expanse (nach Staffel 3 setzte der Sender die Serie ab, woraufhin Amazon Prime Video Staffel 4-6 produzierte und die Serie erst richtig berühmt machte; dumm gelaufen)

Am öftesten übersehene Mini-Serie: Children of Dune (denn nein, es wurde nicht immer nur der erste Roman verfilmt, die erste Verfilmung von "Dune Messiah" beginnt diese Mini-Serie)

Beste Verfilmung: Resident Alien

Unverzeihlichste Canncelation: Krypton (dabei war nicht nur eine dritte Staffel, sondern auch ein Lobo Spin-Off geplant)

Blödestes Ende: Battlestar Galactica

Fragwürdigste inhatliche Entwicklung: Eureka: Die neue Zeitlinie bleibt (In der neuen Zeitlinie ist Alisons Sohn kein Autist ist und damit "besser"!)

Beste Serie: The Magicians (trotz unverzeihlichen Ende von Staffel 4 und einer "Was sollte das jetzt eigentlich sein" finalen fünften Staffel)

Größter Break Out Star: Tricia Helfer (BSG)

Zu Schade, dass ein Sender, der Serien wie "Andromeda", "Outer Limits" und "Sliders" gerettet hat, und ein paar der besten kanadischen Kult-Serien importiert und damit einem breiteren Publikum bekannt gemacht hat, nun selbst seinen größten Hit abgeben muss und statt neuen Material Wiederholungen von älteren abgesetzten Sendungen zeigt. So ändern sich die Zeiten. Schade bleibt es trotzdem. Aber immerhin hatte der Sender einen guten Run. Was besser als gar nichts ist, schätze ich.

Personally I'd like to see Adam Strange.

Classical star-crossed lovers tropes between Adam and Alanna aside, I think it'd be interesting to see Clark, an Alien who has embraced Earth as his home, interact with Adam, a human who embraced Rann as his home.

Adam tends to show up in bit parts, like in Swamp Thing, Starman and the like so he isn't that much of a deep-cut. He also showed up in that SyFy Krypton show.

Just eh ignore Alan Moore's and Tom King's takes on him.

Something I'd like to see in future seasons of MAWS is the introduction of new superheros outside of kryptonians. Batman has already been confirmed to not be appearing which makes me think Wonder Woman also won't be. Instead, my prediction is them bringing in Hawkman and Hawkgirl.

Why? The Hawks are from Thanagar, one of the worlds Kara destroyed under Brainiac's control so this would be a way of her reckoning with her past while also giving her hope that some people survived the Kryptonian Empire.

It would make the universe feel bigger and have payoff for the worlds mentioned in Brainiac's crusade.
