A/N: This is the first time I did that Digimon Adventure Tri-related post. Though I rather pretend that Tri doesn't exist because Tri had done dirty to the 02 Kids. Also, the eight Chosen Children/Digidestined ignoring the existence of the 02 Kids left a bad taste in my mouth.

Happy Valentine’s Day, everyone!
For the past week, I’ve hosted quite a few polls to estimate which are currently tumblr’s most popular Digimon Adventure ships! Thank you all for participating!
This main post will analyze the general vibe of the polls, discuss limitations and biases - because every single character will get their own analysis post in the upcoming days. Thus, this main post will continuously be updated under the cut, so if you’re interested, feel free to check in every once in a while!
Discaimer: Please take into account that these results are no definitive display of the Digimon shipping landscape out there! This is just a little experiment I felt like diving into a little more for fun!
Main Polls
Taichi Yagami I & II
Yamato Ishida I & II
Sora Takenouchi I & II
Koushiro Izumi I & II
Mimi Tachikawa I & II
Jou Kido I & II
Takeru Takaishi I & II
Hikari Yagami I & II
Daisuke Motomiya I & II
Ken Ichijouji I & II
Miyako Inoue I & II
Iori Hida I & II
Meiko Mochizuki
Discussion & Links to Analysis
The vote was open from February 6th to February 13th. All the 12 main Chosen Children known from Digimon Adventure 01 and 02 received a main and a secondary poll. (Meiko Mochizuki got an additional poll.) While the main poll listed the other characters from their respective groups (either 01 or 02), the secondary poll listed each complementary group, plus a few potentially notable side characters that might be seen as viable choices in fandom.
Limitations & Biases
Before I go into presenting the most notable results, I NEED to address a few things worth taking into account.
Limited reach/exposure bias: Since there were two polls for every character (and the secondary polls got posted with a bit of a delay), the first poll usually got way more exposure than the second one. Thus, the secondary polls rarely (or only temporarily) made an impact. A few of the polls were reblogged by various blogs and thus gained more attention in general.
Low sample size: Since the polls have not been shared as often, the numbers we’re talking about are not very reliable - in some cases, one singular vote was capable of changing the entire poll, whereas in other cases, singular votes didn’t matter in the slightest, especially when it came to ships that are considered to be “rare pairs”. Thus, those didn’t have a lot of time to shine overall. Additionally, the Digimon Adventure fandom overall is a lot more quiet these days (due to lack of new content), so the polls themselves were not thriving very well.
Follower bias: Since I was the one who posted the polls, my follower circle may have had a significant impact on who was picked for which poll. Naturally, people who follow me, who like the characters/ships I like, are more likely to vote for those certain ships. For example: Koushiro and Taichi may have gotten more votes (and for each other in particular), as their polls have also been reblogged several times, whereas others didn’t get reblogged at all. I can only assume that the results for several characters might have looked a lot differently in other spheres of tumblr - or the internet in general.
Choice bias: The additional characters in the secondary polls were based on my personal guesses, so I may or may not have forgotten other fanon ship choices, which I apologize for!
Redundant voting: It cannot be guaranteed that people haven’t voted for several options in the first and second poll, instead of picking the "someone from the other poll" or "others" choice. Or: If they picked "someone from the other poll", they might not even have voted there at all, we cannot tell. Thus, there might be contradicting votes, which is why I excluded the "someone from the other poll" option in poll 1+2 as well as the "others" choice from the first poll, since they might actually have picked someone mentioned in the second poll. There will be some honorable mentions of course, but it is very difficult to categorize these, so it's a learning for the next poll!
Notable results: Winners (overall)!
Disclaimer: As the “Someone from 01/02″ and “Others” options from poll 1 and the “Someone from 01/02″ option from poll 2 have been excluded from the final analysis and all results were culminated in another “final count”, the results will not be 1:1 to what the polls look like. See Taichi’s spreadsheet for transparency (all other sheets will be included in the respective analysis posts):
Tumblr media
Taichi Yagami: Koushiro Izumi (27%)
Yamato Ishida: Taichi Yagami (37%)
Sora Takenouchi: Taichi Yagami* (32%)
Koushiro Izumi: Taichi Yagami (55%)
Mimi Tachikawa: Jou Kido (22%)
Jou Kido: Mimi Tachikawa (38%)
Takeru Takaishi: Hikari Yagami (53%)
Hikari Yagami: Takeru Takaishi (44%)
Daisuke Motomiya: Ken Ichijouji (52%)
Ken Ichijouji: Daisuke Motomiya (61%)
Miyako Inoue: Hikari Yagami (31%)
Iori Hida: Takeru Takaishi**(22%)
Meiko Mochizuki: Mimi Tachikawa (42%)
*due to their closeness in votes, both Taichi and Yamato are displayed as winners of her poll though - in true Taiorato fashion.
Tumblr media
**even though Noriko Kawada (39%) won the secondary poll clearly, the overall votes evened it out.
Notable results: Stats
Now, let’s dive into the more interesting bits, shall we!
Most votes overall: Taichi (164), Ken (148), Takeru (135)
Least votes overall: Iori (93), Sora (107), Jou (109) + Meiko (54, as she had only one poll)
Most polls won*: Taichi (Yamato, Sora, Koushiro), Mimi (Jyou, Meiko), Takeru (Hikari, Iori), Hikari (Takeru, Miyako)
Clear victories (+50%): Ken (Daisuke, 61%), Koushiro (Taichi, 55%), Takeru (Hikari, 53%), Daisuke (Ken, 52%)
*interestingly enough, this somewhat corresponds with the poll asking for who are the most popular Chosen Children from Adventure as well.
Notable results: Clutch races
Taichi: Yamato vs Koushiro vs Sora; although Sora was almost always third place and usually only tied with Koushiro for short periods; Yamato was in the lead for the majority of the time, but was overtaken by Koushiro in the end.
Sora: Taichi vs Yamato; Yamato led first, was then overtaken by Taichi, then briefly surpassed by Yamato again. Taichi won with the tiniest of advantages in the end, hence the poll displays both of them as winners - ironically enough, as the question of “Taiora or Sorato/Taiorato triangle?” is probably one of the most debated ship discussions of all time.
Mimi: Jou vs Koushiro; Koushiro was in the lead for the majority of the time, Jou tied on a daily basis and took over in the end. This is similar to the Taiorato race, as the “Koumi vs Jyoumi” triangle is similarly debated, albeit not as heated.
Daisuke: Even though Ken was basically unbeatable from the start, Daisuke actually has most votes tied for third place (as you will see in his individual analysis).
Miyako: Hikari vs Ken; was very close from the beginning, but Hikari led the entire time.
Iori: Miyako vs Takeru; Miyako led first, was then overtaken by Takeru. Iori’s analysis overall, however, might turn out to be the most interesting in the end, as the segment below will explain further...
Notable results: Where the 2nd poll mattered
Jou: One of the reasons why the secondary polls were created in the first place was the number of people who voted for “Others” on Jou’s poll. And thus, it is absolutely no surprise that “Bike Girl” (literally the girl he took the bike from in “Diablomon Strikes Back”) came in third overall in the end, being very closely followed by his mystery “girlfriend” in Tri (which may or may not be also Bike Girl, but this was never confirmed or denied, so we’ll never know).
Iori: The “Others” option in his first poll even surpassed Jou’s by a long shot, which will be very interesting to look at in his individual analysis. To keep it shortly for now, this and the comments made in the tags may indicate that people either had a hard time shipping him at all/seeing him as asexual, shipping him with OCs - or, as we will see, with someone from the second poll, Noriko Kawada for example.
Hikari: Daisuke and Koushiro basically had a race for third place for the majority of the run-time, which was won by Koushiro in the end only slightly.
Takeru: Similarly to what happened to Hikari; Meiko came in third at first, but was overtaken by Taichi later on.
Miyako: Mimi and Daisuke had a race for third place for a good chunk of the run-time, which was very closely won by Mimi in the end.
Personal thoughts/observations on my behalf
I actually love how two of the most influental/popular triangles in the OG Digimon Adventure verse (Taiorato + Jyoumishiro) have been racing each other until the very end - while Takari for example was comfortably in the lead the entire time. Shoutout to kbondoxxxxav who has JUST today published this beautiful artwork depicting these exact triangles/ships. It has to be noted though that both triangle races have been incredibly close and could have turned out the other way in favour of Sorato and Koumi instead of Taiora and Jyoumi at any given time. (The same can also be said about Taiyama instead of Taishiro in Taichi’s poll. Personally though, I am very happy to see that the people who voted agree with my personal opinion that Koushirou, Yamato and Sora are the most shippable choices for Taichi.)
At first, the results were a lot more variable - so the graphic I made above could have included a looooot more ships (such as Koumi or Miyori). In the end, it got very even, with one side of the ship usually winning the other side as well (like Taishiro, Jyoumi, Takari and Daiken). Interestingly enough, the Jogress partnerships have been very popular in general as well (such as Taiyama, Daiken, Miyakari and Takori).
For characters like Iori, the votes have been very torn for the majority of the time - while Takeru and Miyako were still the more prominent choices in canon, it was very easy to see how much people were struggling to make a choice here. Same with Daisuke, who, as mentioned above, had three ships competing for third place!
I really hope I will be able to repeat the votings in the future with more participation, just to see how things may have turned out if more choices could get more time to shine!
Final verdict: It was a lot of fun to observe the polls for the past week, to see how certain results would change, with even a few surprises in between!
If you have any further questions, feel free to ask!

Digimon Adventure 02: The Beginning [My Movie Review]
♡ ! SPOILER ALERT! ♡
This review will contain spoilers of the movie, continue reading if you already saw the movie, or just don’t mind the spoiler! Enjoy & comment something if you want to share an opinion! ♡
Tumblr media
After what seemed ages of waiting, Digimon Adventure 02: The Beginning finally aired in Portugal, on May 16, 2024, several months after it’s national premiere in Japan, on October 27, 2023. I was worried that it wouldn't come to my country, but perhaps due to the huge acceptance of Digimon Adventure: LAST EVOLUTION KIZUNA, the distributor made the hearts of the DigiDestined from the most hidden corner of Europe warm again and brought us the sequel. Thank you remembering us once again! ♡
I really tried to keep my expectations as neutral as possible until the day I went to see the movie, which was pretty difficult, due to the fact that I was constantly being bombarded with online information about it, whether on Tumblr or Twitter, or through video recommendations on Youtube. I was so excited for the movie, that I had to control myself immensely not to go see the spoilers.
Initial considerations? I like it. In general. But let's go in parts!
This will be an analysis of what I consider to be the most important points of the movie and what caught my attention the most. A personal analysis, so don't take it too seriously if I don't talk about a certain point or a certain specific topic, I probably just missed that.
Firstly, I would like to comment on the initial dynamics of the movie.
Everything seems to happen much faster here than it did in Kizuna. Despite being two movies with practically the same time span, this one seemed to go by much faster. But it might just be me. [LAST EVOLUTION KIZUNA have 94 minutes, and The Beginning have 87 minutes total].
We're introduced to the key plot problem pretty quickly too.
People's digital devices are glitching, and the same message is repeating itself on all of them, not just on the phones and televisions, but on computers and large digital screens in cities all around the world. And this all around the world is very important, because it not only brings us closer to what will be the future of humanity and it’s increasing contact with the Digimon and the Digital World, but it opens the path we take since 2012 [time of the movie] until to the epilogue of 02 (which the production team and Toei animation seem to insist on wanting to keep canon, despite all the script inconsistencies it can cause, or how different from the initial profile of each character it may be).
“May everyone have friends, may everyone have a partner Digimon”
It's the message. Meanwhile, we are told that a suspicious and unknown Digitama appeared in the sky of Tokyo, right above the Tokyo Tower, and it’s been there for a while. Taichi and Koushiro are showned to be trying to help resolve this issue as professionals in the field of diplomacy and technology respectively, but without major progress.
I think it's important to highlight that they are the only two characters from the first season of Adventure who appear in this movie, and even so, without any direct speech or great relevance, beyond contextualization, and later Taichi as well again for the context of “space- time”, in that frame we see in the trailer of the movie with Hikari, which we later discover is located in Hikarigaoka, where Rui also lived when he had his first contact with Ukkomon.
The focus is on the characters from 02, or at least, it should have been. But as in Digimon Adventure Tri, this focus is overshadowed by the introduction of another new character in the story: Rui Owhada [or Lui, in Japanese pronunciation].
Rui [or Lui] is a much more charismatic character than Meiko was in Digimon Adventure Tri. There is no doubt about that.
Meiko was a somewhat empty character. A static character without great charisma. The only pleasant scenes she had were driven by the other characters around her (namely Mimi).
Rui doesn't. Rui is a character on his own. With a much more aggressive personality and a much more interesting past. The only issue here is the length of the movie: This movie is too short; too short for us to get attached to this character and actually be able feel empathy for everything we are shown about him. So short, that it's difficult to develop both this new character and the others around him, which, by the way, is a shame.
I mostly went to see the movie in hopes to see more from the 02 cast, and not because, again, of a random character they created for this new script. Just like what happened in Tri.
And this is important because notice that one of the most complex and best-built characters in the Adventure universe is literally the character with the most screen time: Takeru.
Analyzing Takeru's character as a whole is extremely time-consuming, because he was in every season, and practically involved in all the main events of the plot, either by himself or through the relationships he establishes throughout the plot, which feed the character's emotional charge. Which makes him a very complex character.
There's no time for that here. There is no time to establish a relationship between Rui and the other characters, nor to establish a relationship between Rui… and the audience.
Rui's childhood is very shocking and once again, Digimon brings a very strong narrative based on a complex and deep family plot.
We had already had examples in Adventure of family issues with Takeru and Yamato, Koushiro, and in 02 with Iori and also Ken. To a certain extent, even with Miyako. But here we reach a higher level of complexity... and violence (remember that the age to see the movie is over 12 years old. I can totally understand why).
Rui is physically abused and neglected by his mother, who leaves him out in the cold, starving when he makes a childish mistake or does something she doesn't like... when he is only four years old. His father has a very serious illness and depends on his wife to survive. Rui is then shown as a sorrowful child, lonely and without any support network. We've never had anything in the Digimon Adventure series so… raw. The aura of the movie is deeply heavy and dark.
The evolutions and battles in this movie are far from being the focus, which probably frustrated many people who went to see the movie for this more dynamic side of the anime.
It is a film with a moral content and even touches on the philosophical, about the bonds we create with others and their nature, about how we should relate to others and learn about them every day we have them in our lives.
It's about healthy communication, and how it's okay to correct the people around us, as long as it's made based with pure intentions. Because love is not omissive. Love corrects, love draws the other's attention for what really matters, in the form of love. In the form of companionship. Nothing physical or superficial is worth the price of a real bond.
The movie really grew with it’s audience. It is not, at all, a movie targeted for new fans of the franchise, or for those who know little about the Adventure series universe. It's for those who know the characters, for those who grew up with them. If you don't know the characters, you will miss details and conversations that are important to really understand the plot as a whole.
Daisuke and Ken look on Rui’s past with him. They see the arrival of Ukkomon in his life, who should’ve bring peace and comfort, but it is only the beginning of all his problems.
Let's take a break from the movie's plot to talk about the characters of 02.
Tumblr media
I'm going to divide them into groups, because it seems like they individually… don't have much progress or very memorable scenes, honestly. It doesn't even make sense to separate them, in my opinion, and you'll understand why.
♡ Daisuke & Iori
There is not much to talk about them here. Daisuke and Iori are the flattest characters in the movie. Iori much more than Daisuke, let's be honest. Iori barely speaks, and has very few relevant scenes.
Daisuke works at a ramen restaurant, as he always wanted, where he gathers his friends to talk about the problems they are facing right at the beginning of the movie.
His personality is practically the same, Daisuke from 02 is the same Daisuke from The Beginning, and even the same character as in Kizuna, he is just taller here and wears different clothes. He still aspires to have his own ramen business and is extremely focused on his career goals. Which was predictable, given the way he talks about his dream in 02.
Daisuke's only two relevant scenes are seconds long: the first when he convinces Rui that the bond of friendship he and his Digimon partner share is much more than something superficial; it's something that comes from the heart, and that no object makes a difference between them, namely the Digivice, (something we also expected to hear from Daisuke in 02, which justifies my opinion that in the meantime... he remains the same).
The other is a scene that had enormous potential, but is cut short by a comical moment in which Miyako pops up.
Daisuke is talking to Ken seriously about Rui, and how he and his Digimon could understand each other better if they just communicate more effectively and directly, and Ken comments that Daisuke's more serious side is very pleasant and rarely appears. However, Miyako speaks up and dismisses the subject. Sadly.
We could have had a conversation here that could tell us more about Daisuke’s presente self and way he sees life now.
Tumblr media
*sigh* Anyway.
Iori, again, doesn't speak much. Seems to only have intermediary interventions, and serves as a “pair” for Daisuke and Rui in the snowball fight that we see at the end of the movie. A very beautiful scene, don't get me wrong, but only if we see it from the perspective of Ken and Miyako, and Hikari and Takeru. I'll talk about that now.
Tumblr media
♡ Ken & Miyako
Ken and Miyako are two characters who seem to grow more together than apart within the movie's plot. Which is natural, given that we know at the end of 02 that they become in fact a couple, and that they build a family together in the future. Here we see the first steps towards their future as a couple.
As expected, nothing explicit or direct is given to us about the nature of their relationship, but we can understand that there is progress, especially by the end of the movie, before the snowball fight, when Miyako tells Ken something that seems extremely vague, but actually means something.
“Let's do it together! "  What? I don't think they are aware yet. Ken also seemed very confused about it.
“ Keep thinking Ken, we have to find another solution. “ We also see Miyako trying to support Ken at that moment when they have to make a decision about the future of Ukkomon and the world.
Here comes what I said above: Love cannot be omissive. We cannot expect the least from those we love. If we know the potential of the person we have by our side, we have to support them. If we see that they are trying to go further, we must support their journey and be a source of advice and rest. Alone we can go faster, but with the right company we can certainly go further.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And I think this is where the movie touches on something really important.
It is in these small moments that we see that they really want to tell the audience something beyond, but we need to have a fine power of perception.
No conversation or comment is random, everything contributes to the story. Digimon Adventure has always been made up of metaphors and subjectivities, it is necessary to know how to interpret and be attentive.
In the midst of that dilemma of whether or not to defeat Ukkomon that we talked about a moment ago in relation to Ken and Miyako, we have another moment that I consider important between Takeru and Hikari, which for those who don't know the characters, can take it as a normal conversation of two people who know each other well. Too well, even.
♡ Takeru & Hikari
Tumblr media
Keeping in mind their journey, and everything they went through together, is the key to understand the nature of the relationship they share now. But before that:
Much like Ken and Miyako, Takeru and Hikari do not exist separately in the plot. It's ridiculously difficult to separate them. If you talk about one, you have to talk about the other.
At the beginning we see them together in the city when the electronic devices break down, and this dynamic continues throughout the entire movie.
They practically always walk side by side, Hikari takes the front seat in Takeru's car, and even when they are talking to Rui and trying to understand what happened to him in his past, they were a nucleus apart from the others. Nothing new, really. More of the same. But it's in that conversation I spoke about earlier that we understand something that is even part of the main moral of the movie: the way they now communicate with each other now, is different.
Anyone who has followed Takeru and Hikari throughout the series knows that the main “problem” in their relationship has always been direct communication.
Exposing things to others as they are is scary. And none of them were good at doing that.
Deliberating about feelings, exposing what disturbs us, what distresses us, what we think of a certain attitude of the other person. That was always Takeru and Hikari's problem and what hindered the possible evolution of their friendship, into a real love relationship.
In Tri we discover that Hikari starts to look at Takeru differently. And we know that Takeru has concrete feelings for Hikari (Said by the actor who plays Takeru's voice) And then? It's done? Things… are much more complicated than that.
They first need to accept the situation in question (And I tell you this as someone who also developed a romantic relationship with a childhood friend. It's not easy. Trust me. It's far from easy!)
And far from being quick.
It requires a lot of deliberation mostly. Just accepting the fact that we see that person we grew up with differently, someone who has always been part of our life, and we can lose them. Just because we developed feelings. Is scary. There's a lot to lose. It's all or nothing. Especially when one side has trauma associated with romantic relationships. (remembering that Takeru's parents are divorced) it's even worse.
What seems to exist between them in The Beginning was the result of a long process. But effective, it seems to me. Whatever decision they made, it went… pretty well.
Takeru is completely against defeating Ukkomon, from the moment he realizes that this could also imply the disappearance of his Digimon partner.
He probably saw the suffering Taichi and Yamato went through when Agumon and Gabumon disappeared and the suffering he would go through if he lose Patamon... again. And he is extremely vocal and firm in what he says and what he thinks about all of that. Impulsive really.
Until Hikari intervenes. Which cuts through his catastrophic reasoning. She asks him to think, opening up a new perspective on the situation.
Here we have a conversation between them that is quite lengthy (compared to the fast action standard of the rest of the movie) in which Hikari tries her best to make Takeru use reason and not emotion in his deliberation on the situation.
Takeru who, remember, whenever “darkness” or “sacrifice” is mentioned, leaves his rationality aside, becomes blind with pain because of his past traumas.
Hikari's role here is almost the same as Miyako’s in Ken's case: calling to earth and calming Takeru, always in an understanding way, because you can see that she knows where that feeling comes from and that position initially adopted by him (and it is something which she can almost predict would happen, by the speed with which she responds) but she knows that he is better than those triggers that make him impulsively speak based on emotion and neglect reason.
It's about getting to know each other. Knowing how to talk to our person about the most difficult topics. Because it is necessary to strengthen your union. Predict reactions, and be there to calm them down, because you may even know that the person is not to blame for the feelings and traumas they carry, but believe that they are bigger than them. And expect the same from the other side.
Tumblr media
The way Miyako knew that Ken could find a solution, he just needed to think a little more. Hikari understood perfectly where Takeru's impulsive reaction came from, but she knew that if she appeal to his racional side he would be able to think of a better alternative to the problem, which he thought would be the end of the world.
That's why I separated this analysis into groups (although the first one isn't... substantial) and decided to analyze the characters together, because that's what this movie is about.
It's about who you are with your people, and the bond you share with them. In a world so individualized, so selfish and so distant (largely because of technology, which distances us from each other), I found it a very necessary message.
And the role of adults? With children and more painful lives?
It is to understand that children are also humans. Who also think, and feel, and understand things. Just like them. Adults tend to forget that they were once children themselves.
We already saw this topic being developed in Adventure 02, but seeing Rui as an adult, reaching to his mother in the past, and drawing her attention to the fact that she neglects her son, is something very touching. Sometimes, we just need a wake-up call, and we can change the future. Ours, and our future with others.
The DigiDestined of 02 encouraged Rui not to give up on someone he loved, Ukkomon, because after all, he only acted the way he acted because he thought it would make Rui happier, even though he failed. Several times.
Ukkomon basically gave Rui everything he thought he needed, everything he wanted. But this is not always ideal.
He acted with his partner's happiness in mind, and this blinded him to the risks he was putting him into. He idealized their entire relationship, and everyone's relationship with him. Instead of being, real. And real things are never perfect.
Rui wanted friends? He gave him friends. He even reprogrammed his parents. They became manufactured humans. And the movie is about reality and accepting it as imperfect as it is.
Do you know what that reminded me of? That whole fantasy created by Ukkomon of “perfect world where Rui is never sad and everything is wonderful?” The fantasies in which the characters from 02 cast were trapped in at the end of the series. That world created with the characters’ deepest desires.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Takeru wanted his family united. Iori wanted his father back and to be able to show him the Digital Word. Miyako wanted attention. Ken… wanted to redeem himself. Hikari wanted peace. It's exactly the same thing.
Think about it with me: For example, Takeru's parents could’ve stay together, they could never have divorced, but they would still have problems. They would argue, and there would be conflicts. Which doesn't mean that this wouldn't traumatize their children even more. Maybe the divorce was in fact the best option for all four of them.
Ken felt he deserved the same suffering he inflicted on others. Would that really be the answer to appease his soul?
But none of it was real.
Not even Hikari's utopia of a world constantly at peace is real. Not even the absence of siblings in Miyako's life would solve anything. Things are not black and white and really, what we want is not always what we need.
Rui just needed to talk to Ukkomon and be sincere.
Where is Mimi tho?!
I will end with a few quick notes that I think are worth highlighting: First, the music and animation in general. As expected, they are excellent.
Very well done visually, appealing scenes, and the last snowball fight scene is so simple… but so delightful.
Tumblr media
Life is made up of beautiful moments as well as tragic moments, light and darkness.
Did you notice that part of the movie takes place in a much dark environment, and when the main action is resolved, the movie gains light? I believe that is not just because!
Visually it can be very strong because there is blood, there is violence, there are physical wounds, it conveys the affliction in a very literal way.
Another thing that was expected to happen, but that probably wasn't even thought of properly when the Epilogue of 02 was made, was the problematic of whether or not everyone deserves, has enough morals and ethics, to have a Digimon partner.
How do you maintain peace between humans when you give them free access to machines of war and mass destruction? How do we build the world we see bz the end of 02 where everyone lives in peace even under these circumstances? Which is the the role of the government?
We'll probably need one more movie to find out.
Honestly, I hope you enjoyed this short (not... that short in fact) and sincere review. If I were to give stars, I would give the film 4/5 stars.
It could’ve been better, sure, if there was at least another half hour of animation.
But I don't complain. Despite that, I liked it. I cried, I laughed, just like I cried and laughed when I saw Digimon in my childhood, and that's everything for me. I was surprised by the message of the movie and the way they chose to visually convey it to us. Either way, I hope there's one more movie. To finally conclude the arc of all these characters, and finally, reach the epilogue of 02 (but in a dignified way please).
♡ Thank you once again Digimon ♡

All right, this has been a long time coming.
The criticism that Tri has received is ridiculous. Let’s face it most of the criticism is against yeeting the 02 newer digidestined.
And then you have the complainers who attack the personalities of the Digidestined because they are ‘not true to character’ or ‘it’s character assassination’
Saying stuff like that just drives me nuts.
I believe that a lot of people say this for the sake of continuity between the series for consistency. But in doing so They miss something so obvious it’s easy to just condemn it instead and walk by it.
So what do I mean?
That, for the most part people do not stay the same forever. Don’t get me wrong personality wise the continuum stops with Tri otherwise they are the same, but it’s not a matter of personality or character consistency.
No, this is a matter of teenage adolescence.
We saw a different side of the Digidestined that I am very grateful for. With all the angst and emotion of the teenage years it was great to see the Digidestined at a degree for the worse.
Let’s kind of list a couple shall we?
Taichi instead of being headstrong is wishy washy at times, an ass at other times and just comes across as unsure.
Tumblr media
Yamato is cold and aloof, jagged and sharp. Not much different honestly. Maybe a little bit colder though.
Sora is…how can I put this lightly? Emotionally supportive but emotionally unstable at the same time even though she seems like the most stable one at times.
Koushiro is so analytical to the breaking point of having a melt down and he has a couple times especially prior to the reboot.
Joe is so distracted like crazy but not really changed that much. He just wants to go back to the real life and who can blame him?
Mimi is a straight up savage who forces her way into getting what she wants without being considerate of others. Even when she thinks of being considerate it’s still her feelings primarily the source of offense.
Tumblr media
Takeru is more evolved I should say, but he lies and messes around far more than he should. But again he’s a teenager. We all have to learn.
Hikari is developing even more as an empath but struggles more to release her feelings in a healthy way which triggers physical distress like unleashing Cthulhu type monsters from twisted digivolutions.
Meiko is everything you could expect her to be. She’s been isolated, socially awkward but people have some kind of strange expectation from her to just jump on the same level As the other digidestined as far as personality or likability. She is a defeatist for sure but I enjoy her growth and regression back and forth this whole time.
As for the story I thought it was good, not great, but they left out some information we have to figure out for ourselves or make inferences. Gee I wonder when In the digimon adventure series we did NOT have to do that? Mystery isn’t it?
I also wondered about the digivolution fight choices as far as the level they were at. They are either going way too lax like champions fighting ultimate meicrackmon or way too op sending three or two Megas against one. (Rip machinedramon.)
But again the teenage years are unstable. It makes sense as the Digidestined find out who they are they fluctuate between the levels. They were after all afraid to hurt meicrackmon but ruthless against everyone else.
The part I liked most about Tri were the relationships. You could see how they naturally interacted with each other and unlike some of the digimon digivolutions they were NOT choppy (looking at you plastic gattomon).
Tumblr media
For example and this is not the takari fanatic enthusiast within me speaking (ok, maybe it is) I enjoyed watching the takari chemistry in dialogue but also body language wise. Don’t ask me how many times they were there for each other.
But also aside from all of that I really enjoyed how for the most part each digidestined interacted with Meiko. And although she is normal and dare I say a bit bland it’s that blandness that really makes the personalities of the Digidestined pop.
Takeru’s heart to heart about Patamon’s infection.
Taichi telling her to shut up but apologize and lead/handhold her along.
Yamato saying a sharp word and the man performing a daring action to express those words.
Mimi’s dress up uniform and encouragement.
Koushiro grilling her about information to save the world.
Meiko relating with Sora about a digimon partner that won’t play nice.
Hikari bringing all of it together helping her understand her place with gentleness, tact, and just reading the atmosphere and between the lines.
You see? Digimon adventure is good if you can look past a few things. And it’s really good if you decipher everything that is going in like I did.
In second place is the relationship with digimon on full display, each digidestined experiencing the negativity or ‘opposite’ of their crests and overcoming the negativity to unleash the power of Megas. (That deserves its own post. More on that later.)
I could go on and on even about the vagueness of both homeostasis and yggdrassil being expressed by their representatives but I wanted to make this post about the Digidestined.
Any comments or questions? Let me know as always!

memorial (one-shot)
[platonic] pairing: meiko-ken summary: On Odaiba Memorial Day, Meiko and Ken talk about grief. preview: “Everyone’s moved on with their lives and I’m here. Still stuck, right here. But when do you stop missing them? When does it stop?” Ken thought for a second before asking, “Hmm. Honestly?” [ao3, ffnet] note: very rusty and this has been in the drafts since last odaiba memorial day, so here's my contribution to @digiweek this year (days 7 technically, but also days 4-5!) this is angst (with a happy ending), but ultimately happy odaiba memorial day and happy digiweek everyone! words: ~4.6k
The second she heard the waves crashing into the Odaiba shore, Meiko knew today would be a struggle. As her last ounce of courage flew from her, she thought of fleeing too — of turning around, catching the next flight back to Tottori, and losing herself in the deepest depths of the forests she called home.
But by then the group had already seen her, and all eyes had turned expectantly awaiting her arrival.
Mimi surprised Meiko by running up to her, gleefully squealing her name, and locking her into the first hug she’d had in a while (while Meiko surprised even herself by immediately returning the hug.) Sora, Takeru, and another black-haired boy stood to fetch her a chair, while the rest remained seated around the outdoor tables of the baywalk cafe, eager to welcome her.
As Mimi pulled her to the group, Meiko identified all eight of the Chosen she knew, and then a handful of others she didn’t. She only guessed that they were Chosen too because each had their partner digimon next to them.
She didn’t expect so many unfamiliar faces, but this was a reunion after all.
Odaiba Memorial Day, the annual celebration to commemorate the day the first batch of children all first met their partners. A day for stories around campfires or cafes, or whatever else was currently in fashion, though venue didn’t matter so much as the company.
Even when Takeru and Mimi lived off the island, they still came back every year to celebrate with the others. They crossed cities and seas to spend a summer afternoon remembering their crazy adventure and friendships forged along the way.
A flurry of introductions was made as Mimi was all too excited to get Meiko up to speed. The only girl was called Miyako, for sure, but the boys' names got all meshed together in her head. They were Daisuke, Ken, and Iori — including the one who had stood to fetch her a chair earlier — though the who’s who of it wasn’t yet so clear.
Whoever they were, they immediately started bombarding her with questions (What kind of ramen ya’ll got in Tottori? Honestly Daisuke, of all the things! It’s a valid question, Miyako!) Thankfully, Sora returned soon enough and, perhaps noticing Meiko shrinking under the weight of all the attention, promptly steered the group back to the topic at hand prior to Meiko’s arrival.
“And where were we, Taichi?”
“—so that was when Yamato punched me in the face.”
“Well, you can’t say you didn’t deserve it,” Yamato smirked.
“I can't say you don’t deserve a blow yourself right now can I?” If one didn't know better, they could have thought the two were heating into an argument, though as it stood they sounded more like an elderly couple bickering over who asked the other out first.
Taichi, Yamato, and Taichi Junior (Meiko just wasn’t sure what his name was) mostly held a monopoly on the narrative while the rest of the kids held their own pockets of conversation around the outdoor cafe.
Sora started making rounds to ask everyone if they’d eaten enough (Have some more, there’s still so much. If you want anything else, we could order again.) Jyou and Miyako were griping on the trials and tribulations of high school life.
At another table, Koushiro and two new kids were discussing (quote) the “techno-sociological implications of the journalistic framing of new digimon sightings across Tokyo” (which Meiko honestly couldn’t follow, but found fascinating nonetheless. She made a mental note to Google some keywords from the conversation when she got home.)
For the most part, Meiko stuck close to Mimi. After all, it was Mimi who had extended the invitation to this reunion (which Meiko tried her best to avoid, until Mimi took the liberty of booking Meiko’s flight — itinerary ironed out and boarding pass ready for printing — at which point Meiko simply could not refuse.)
Mimi sat at the same table as Taichi’s group, emphatically fact-checking his recollection of certain events (I didn’t enslave those Gekomon! They wanted to serve me!)
In the corner of her eye, Meiko caught sight of Takeru and Hikari, standing by the baywalk railing, reveling in the summer sun and a warm sea breeze with the other digimon. Meiko was secretly thankful for this, as she wasn’t sure if she could face Hikari.
Not that Meiko disliked her, or that she had wronged anyone in any way. In fact, Meiko felt guilty for avoiding someone who had only ever been kind to her. But she just wasn’t sure how to talk to the girl after the events of last summer, especially with her own digimon sitting right next to her, tail playing peacefully with the midday sun.
Her own digimon that even looked like Meicoomon.
It wasn’t fair.
How could both their digimon get infected, corrupted to the same degree, but only one of them didn’t come back? How could they have crossed the bounds of depravity together, but only one came out the other end? What do you say to someone who went through exactly the same experience, but got the better end of the deal?
Meiko recognized it wasn’t Hikari’s fault. She didn’t blame the girl for anything that happened, which actually made everything worse, because who else was there to blame? What else was she supposed to feel?
She only knew she couldn’t face the girl, because If she were completely honest, she wasn’t sure if she could keep her mouth from asking what had haunted her this whole past year: why did it have to be me?
No, she couldn’t say that — couldn’t allow herself to say it, because even she understood its unutterable implications.
Avoiding the younger girl though wasn’t difficult though, as she had more than enough to keep her occupied. To her own surprise, being back in Odaiba was turning out to be not as bad as she had expected, and she enjoyed being surrounded by all the familiar faces.
Mimi tried to ease the new girl into the conversation at convenient points, but knew Meiko well enough to know when and when not to push her participation — though it often defaulted on the latter, as Meiko enjoyed simply listening to her friends’ adventures she was hearing for the first time.
If she didn’t think too much, she could almost contain her envy. It was like listening to the retelling of a movie, or the recap of some shiny new anime. Meiko had only seen the digital world at its most offensive, so it was intriguing to hear that wasn’t all there was to it. There were islands of ice, towns full of toys, fantastic factories, and even holographic pyramids.
“You think if you got far enough you could have made a run for it?” asked Taichi Junior.
“We would have had to make some distance,” replied Yamato, crossing his arms, “Etemon had range.”
“Explosions everywhere,” said Mimi.
“Good thing someone’s crest activated right in the nick of time,” Taichi announced, folding his arms behind his head.
“Good thing someone was crazy enough to headbutt the digimon equivalent of a black hole!” Mimi interrupted.
“Oi, oi, don’t talk about MetalGreymon that way!”
“And good thing some idiot was dumb enough to run straight into that black hole with them!”
“We didn’t run! We got sucked in!”
“After you ran!”
“She’s not wrong,” Yamato sneered.
“We looked for you for months!”
“Not like I asked you to!”
“Hey,” interjected Taichi Junior, trying to diffuse the tension. “Explosions? Like that one time, with Ken’s base, remember?”
“That time we covered for you?” Taichi asked, taking the bait.
“The longest bus ride I’d ever had.” Yamato said, sighing. Taichi Junior might have mumbled something about his sister while Yamato might have grumbled someting about the worst date he’d ever had, Meiko wasn’t sure.
After the two finished growling at each other, Mimi found the courage to ask, “What really happened back there?”
“We never really clear on the details,” added Yamato.
An audible “Eh?” came from the younger brunette.
“I meant to ask Hikari, but she was too tired when you got back. Then we just never talked about it,” Taichi explained.
“We only know after that Ken… The Digimon Kaiser….?”
“—disappeared.”
“I know he talked to Koushiro about stuff time. Didn’t that answer all your questions?” asked the younger boy.
“All of Koushiro’s questions.”
“All mostly technical.”
“That nerd,” Mimi sighed, though with obvious affection.
“If you really want to know, I guess explain,” said the younger boy, scratching his head.
“You don’t have to tell us though if you’re not…” someone said.
“Or if Ken isn’t…”
The three older Chosen all nodded patiently in agreement.
“It’s fine,” the boy replied. “Ken isn’t proud of that time of his life. But I know he’s… made a lot of progress since then. He’s a bit more open about everything now, so if it could help you understand him better, I guess I could tell you.”
They all nodded once more. Meiko wasn’t sure what was happening. She wasn’t sure if they had forgotten she was there.
“A lot happened out there. The base was exploding, but we had to keep going. Ken and Chimeramon, hot on our tracks,” he continued.
“I’m a little hazy on some of the details, but in the end Wormmon…,” the boy paused, perhaps trying to pick his words with care. “He sacrificed himself.”
“He lost his digimon too?” asked Meiko, though everyone was still too engrossed in the boy’s story to pay much attention.
“For a while, but he came back.”
He… came back?
“Like Leomon?” asked Mimi.
Others have come back too?
“Exactly,” said the younger boy. “Or that’s what Takeru explained. I guess that’s when everything started to change.”
“So when digimon…” Meiko couldn’t even say the word. She was shaking, a slither of hope encroaching her voice. “They come back?”
In that instance, the group realized what the girl was asking.
“Meiko,” Mimi said delicately. “I’m sorry Meiko, but…”
There was something about a nursery, at the heart of the Digital World. About rebirth, revival, a handful of rules. The real world and the digital.
Maybe she stopped listening. Maybe she ran right there, or maybe she gave some weak excuse like needing to go to the bathroom, or take a phone call. Something, anything. She was too numb to take note.
She just knew she couldn’t bear any of it anymore. Next thing she knew she was on her feet, turning every corner she could, running as far as she could from everyone and every partner that wasn’t hers, until her legs folded, planting her on some random staircase, out of breath and bawling her eyes out.
----------
She didn’t know how long she’d been crying. She only knew she shouldn’t have come, should have stayed in Tottori, far away from that stupid bay, from everyone and all their stupid stories.
She already knew Takeru lost his digimon. He told her shortly after she lost hers. But he was so young then, and he’d been through so much those past few months, she couldn’t help but appreciate his attempts to sympathize.
But back then she thought Takeru’s case was sheer dumb luck. An exception, rather than the norm.
DIgimon are reborn? In general?
She could accept that she was merely not lucky — of typical levels of misfortune — but to be the only one to have lost their digimon? When it was apparently so painfully easy not to?
She didn’t even do half the dumb shit they did. No black holes or exploding bases for her. She’d never even so much as crossed the street without making Meicoomon look both ways (and those were all across provincial streets at that.)
It wasn’t fair. They weren’t fair. How dare they have the audacity to flaunt their partners, their providence to keep them when she could not? How could they gloat in blissful ignorance when she was so miserable?
She never wanted to see them again. She just wanted to cry and cry, dry every emotion so she could shrivel up on these steps and feel absolutely nothing, ever again.
“Hey,” she heard as a finger gently tapped on her shoulder.
It was only then she realized how intensely she’d been shaking. When Meiko looked up, she saw the dark-haired boy from Koushiro’s table earlier. “We’ve been looking for you,” he said.
“Ichijouji, Ken, by the way. Not sure if we had a proper introduction in all the chaos earlier,” he said, sitting down on the steps next to her.
So this was Ken.
“Sorry if Daisuke offended you or something. He means well, he’s a bit rough around the edges,” he said, uncapping a bottle of water.
This boy clearly had no idea what that Daisuke kid was saying earlier.
“When he crosses the line, don’t be afraid to let him know. Miyako likes to give him a good smack, but for me explaining is usually enough.”
Meiko didn’t know what to say, so he went on.
“He’s kind of slow sometimes, but he gets there. He tries,” he said, laughing a little. “Water?” he asked, offering her the bottle.
Meiko shook her head. She knew barely anything about this boy, but what she knew was enough to make her despise him, for he had something that she could never have, no matter how desperately she wished for it.
“Alright,” he said, capping the bottle and letting it down on the steps by their feet. “Do you want to go back to the—”
“NO!” she cried.
“Alright, alright,” he said, raising his hands in defense. “We could just sit here for a bit.”
They sat without words for a few minutes, noise of the city interrupted only occasionally by Meiko’s shudders as she tried to steady her breath from the breakdown earlier.
It took a while, but she soon realized her breath had slowed and synced with that of Ken, who was making what could only be understood as intentionally deep, regular breaths to calm her down (that or he was fending off an asthma attack, but she didn’t care to clarify right now.)
“Feeling better?” he asked.
Despite herself, this time, she nodded.
“Good,” he said with a gentle smile. “I’m glad I found you, by the way. I actually wanted to talk to you.”
Meiko darted her puffy eyes at him. “I’m not interested,” she retorted.
“Ah, no, not like that! I mean…” A sigh. “I heard about what happened last year, so I wanted to say I think you’re pretty brave. I know how hard it is to lose someone.”
“Yeah, your digimon, but you got him back, right?” she said, surprising herself with the harshness of her voice.
“Ah, yes,” he replied, not even flinching, no question of how she knew this, “My brother too.”
“Your brother?”
“Yeah, I had a brother. His name was Osamu. Older by three years.”
Suddenly all animosity fell to the pit of her stomach. “What happened to him?”
“He… we…” He paused trying to remember. “I used to remember it so vividly, but now I’ve lost a lot of the details,” he said, laughing a little to himself.
Meiko couldn’t laugh.
“I think we were crossing the street, my mom was there. Then.. a bus, or maybe a truck—?”
“I’m so sorry,” cried Meiko, bowing her head. “You don’t have to remember for my sake!”.
“It’s alright, I couldn’t even if I tried,” he said, smiling wistfully. “It’s been a while, so the details are a little hazy.”
“I am so sorry,” she repeated, more for herself this time than for him.
“It’s alright, it’s been about seven years now. At the time though, I remember I couldn’t pass that street for a while. Couldn’t even look at it without breaking down, or throwing up. One or the other.”
She was speechless.
“I guess that’s why I think you’re pretty brave, cause I know how hard it is. To come back, where everything happened.”
“How do you deal with seeing that place now?”
“I don’t,” he said, blissfully unbothered. “We moved soon after.”
“To Odaiba?”
“To Tamachi, actually. Now that I think about it, maybe that was why we moved.”
Meiko nodded, listening.
“So I get that coming back must be hard, especially with everything so fresh. So if you want to talk to anyone about anything, I just wanted to say I’m here. We’re all here.”
And just like that, she was bawling all over again. She'd heard these words probably a hundred times, in a hundred different ways this past year, but this was the first time Meiko could believe someone might actually understand.
“Ah, I’m sorry if I said something wrong!”
“No, it’s just— just—” she staggered. “She was my best friend, you know? Maybe my only friend.”
“That’s the hardest part, isn’t it?”
“Were you close with your brother?” she said, staggered, attempting to compose herself.
“We didn’t always get along, but he was my brother. He taught me everything I knew.”
“We did everything together.”
“We did too. He’d walk me to school, even if my kindergarten was an entire block away.”
“She’d always wait outside my classroom, then we’d walk home together.”
“Then what would you do?”
“We’d play in the woods near my house. She loved the smell of trees, dew on tiny flowers, the shimmer of fireflies in the summer. And whenever I felt we were lost, she’d always know the way back home.”
“That sounds really fun.” He smiled. “What else did you do?”
“Everything. If I looked too stressed doing homework or something she’d always come over for cuddles, or to ask how I was doing. I was never really great with keeping friends, but she was always there. She was the only constant.”
“Now not a day goes by that I don’t turn the corner and hope to find her, waiting for me after class, or asking for a walk. It’s like there’s a whole in my heart and I don’t know what to do with it.”
This time it was Ken’s turn to nod and listen.
“Everyone’s moved on with their lives and I’m here. Still stuck, right here. But when do you stop missing them? When does it stop?”
Ken thought for a second before asking, “Hmm. Honestly?”
Meiko nodded.
“I’m sorry,” he said, placing a hand on her shoulder, shaking his head. “I’m not sure if it ever does, but it does get better.”
“What does that even mean?”
“For months, my mom would see me and call me by my brother’s name. Then she always cried. But I couldn’t even blame her ‘cause I couldn’t do anything without thinking about him either. Like if I learned something at school, or saw something cool on TV, I’d always think ‘I should tell nii-chan’. Sometimes I still do.”
“How is that ‘better’?”
“We stopped crying,” he laughed. “Or at least stopped crying so often.”
“But how?” Meiko asked, still teary-eyed herself.
“I actually… wouldn’t recommend what I did. I went to a lot of dark places for a long time, and things got worse before they got better.”
“When did it get better then?”
“I think after Daisuke slapped me once,” he said laughing again.
Internally Meiko questioned if this boy was a masochist.
“It sounds kinda funny now, but I guess that’s when I started to think, maybe I didn’t have to deal with everything on my own. Daisuke’s an idiot, but he’s an idiot who doesn’t know when to give up, and he never gave up on me.”
“The others helped too. Takeru taught me how to write my brother letters, for when I have too much I want to say. Sometimes he even comes with me to deliver them.”
“Takeru tried to teach me how to write letters too,” Meiko said.
“Did it help?”
“I was really good with words…”
“It doesn’t matter, it doesn’t need to be good. It just has to be whatever you need it to be.” He thought for a minute. “If letters aren’t your thing, we tried other things too.”
“Hikari taught me how to make paper flowers so we bring those too,” he continued.
“Iori does like… this accountability thing. Whenever I sound kinda down, without fail, he will show up at my doorstep at six a.m., in his sweats and runners, and make me get out of bed to do laps around the neighborhood.”
“What?” Meiko couldn’t help but laugh at the fact that the smallest kid was a fitness buff.
“Rain or shine. He could have an exam at eight, but any hint of downers and six sharp, he’ll be knocking with one hand, and holding up notes with the other.”
“One time, when I was really struggling near the end of middle school, he showed up so often my mom got tired of getting up so early to let him in, so she gave him his own keys without telling me. The shock of my life when I found him standing at the foot of my bed in the dark of dawn.
“He really did that?” The mental image was both horrific and hilarious at the same time. Meiko imagined that kid, barely five feet, towering over Ken's bed before the break of dawn, throwing the teen’s runners on the bed before demanding he join him for a jog.
“Yeah! I think I fell out of bed that day. And he still made me do like three laps.”
“That’s terrible!” she said, but couldn’t help chuckling.
“The only consolation is Miyako always makes us both a full course breakfast from their convenience store, so I’m usually set for the day.”
“She doesn’t come along?”
“Nah, she couldn’t wake up that early. But she assembles our bentos herself, like these,” he said, pulling out his phone to show her pictures of bentos — smiling bears made of egg or rice, octopus sausages with mayonnaise lips, carrots and ketchup forming such chaotic katakana that Meiko could barely guess they must have meant to read ‘gambarou’.
“You have great friends, Ichijouji-kun.”
“They’re all excited to meet you too. We all got really worried when you ran off earlier.”
Oh, right. Meiko had almost completely forgotten that.
“I’m sorry I ruined your reunion.” A search party for the new girl was probably not how any of them expected to spend their day today.
“‘course not. We’ve had digimon attacks on Christmas. This is nothing. I’m sure everyone’ll just be glad to see you’re okay.” He offered his hand to help her up. “Ready to head back?”
She slowly shook her head. “I’m not sure if I’m ready just yet.”
“Don’t worry already Miyako smacked Daisuke for you. He’ll be nice.”
“No, it’s not that! Everyone’s been so friendly. It’s me. I’m the problem.”
“You’re not a problem, Mochizuki-san.”
“I am! None of you have done anything wrong. It’s me.”
“It’s not.”
“No, everyone’s fine. Everyone’s back to normal, but it’s me and my feeling everything too much.”
“It’s not a problem for you to feel things.”
“But it’s been a year! I should be fine now too! But I’m not, and I’m not even any good at pretending to be okay because I still cry, and I run, and I get mad at people who’ve done nothing wrong.”
“It’s fine, Mochizuki-san. We understand.”
“But you shouldn’t! Because you’ve been nothing but nice and I shouldn't be such a horrible person!”
At that point Ken had slowly raised his hand, but held it there for a second. Meiko thought he might have wanted to slap some sense into her (what was it with these kids and slapping?) but paused to deliberate — an entire moral debate playing out in the courthouse of his mind — before ultimately shaking his head and deciding to settle for an awkward shoulder pat.
“Uh, sorry. Anyway—” he said, clearing his throat.
“I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have said any of that,” she replied.
“There are no ‘shoulds’ or deadlines, Mochizuki-san. There’s only whatever you need to get through the day.”
Here it goes. She’d said the words before she could remember she shouldn't, “Sometimes I think it might be better if I didn’t.”
To her surprise, he didn’t reply with the usual platitudes, the meaningless words the stupid guidance councilors of her school picked from self-help books to throw around like confetti. Instead he said, “I’ve been there, but trust me it’s always better if you do.”
“But what’s the point?”
“Some people like to think they go through things for a reason.”
“Do you really believe that?”
“Nah, sounds like bullshit.”
“Then why? Why am I still here when my best friend isn’t? Why did I have to go through that? Why me, and why do I have to keep suffering only to bring everyone down with me?”
“I’ve been there too.”
“And?”
“Haven’t found an answer,” he said laughing more lightheartedly than Meiko thought the conversation merited. Maybe he was a masochist.
“It doesn’t make sense,” she cried.
“It doesn’t,” he conceded. “But if you stick around, I promise you, some things do. Or things might still not make any sense, but in a good way.”
“How could that ever be in a good way?”
“Like how you could shut your parents out for so long, and they’d still be waiting for you to come home. Or you could run away from all your friends, and they’d try to reach you.”
She tried to figure out if he was talking about her or himself, before deciding she just couldn’t tell.
“You’re lucky Iori didn't find you first. He might have made you do a little run to feel better.”
“I’m not good at running!”
“I wasn’t either, but the first time he made me he said ‘If you’re going to run from your problems, you might as well get proper form!’”
They both burst into laughter.
“They’re really great friends.”
“Yeah,” Ken smiled, satisfied. “If you want, I could take you back to wherever you’re staying, or if you’re ready, we could go see them. Either way, I’m sure they’d be glad to see you doing better.”
“I’m not sure if I am.”
“Well, then we’ll be right here if you need us until you are,” he said, placing a steady hand on her shoulder. “So, what will it be?”
Meiko thought about it for a moment, then decided, “Let’s go back.”
Ken stood from his step on the stairs and extended his hand to Meiko to help her up. As he stood, he almost toppled the bottle of water she rejected earlier. “Almost forgot,” he said, picking it up and offering it again, “Do you want this now?”
This time, she took it and drank greedily until the bottle was almost empty. She hadn’t realized how parched she was.
“Thanks, Ichijouji-kun. I needed that.”
“Don’t thank me. It was Hikari’s idea to send us each off with those. Thought you might need it. Or we might need it ourselves,” he said, wiping his forehead of sweat that had accumulated in the summer heat.
Hikari. She knew she knew she would always envy the girl. If she were completely honest, she envied all of them, for what they all had that she never could. But if she was going to feel the grief forever, she might as well start being open to feeling other things along with it.
“I guess I’ll have to thank her myself then.”
“You sure you’re ready?” Ken asked.
“Ready as I’ll ever be,” she said, finally letting him help her up. He quickly messaged the others to announce he’d found Meiko, before the two walked together to return to the party, as the sun set on Odaiba Memorial Day.

[Part one here]
Here’s the final six pages.
Project Mei
Meiko faces her dad, asking more about Meicoomon and her purpose. The old man feels nervous to talk about it, yet he decides Meiko should know. He explains Meicoomon's reason to exist was to create their own squadron of Chosen Children in order to fight menaces from the Digital World. But the Digital World’s Gods hated it and told them to cancel the project.
When Meiko talked about Meicoomon being made to kill digimon, her father elaborated it more, about her not being a total killing machine and she would only kill the enemy if they refused to give up, by injecting a powerful virus in their data. Meiko gets mad, because now this means Taichi, Yamato and their friends’ digimon were infected. The old man strokes his chin, hearing that more digimon might be in trouble. He then refers to Meicoomon also having an antivirus in her program, in case of one of their allies getting infected by accident. This makes Meiko less concerned, but she remembers of some strange parasite digimon consuming her.
Mr. Mochizuki finds it odd, a parasite digimon? And then he receives a call from the Data Bureau agent Nishijima Daigo, to talk about Meicoomon with him and Meiko. The man asks why, but the other couldn’t give details sadly.
Meanwhile, Daisuke tells Koushiro and the others about Himekawa’s offer, and that she could help them. Not that Daisuke believed her, because she was extremely shady and stalking him, but he started to wonder if she wasn’t involved with what happened to Imperialdramon and Meicoomon.Ken thinks that’s possible, but they have not enough evidences to accuse Himekawa. Mimi wonders how Meiko is feeling and offers to talk to her.
Sora thinks it’s too dangerous for them to fight, so she says to only work as their support, Jou apologizes and says he cannot help much since there’s a school exam coming, but he also joins the support cast – in case of them being needed, they will rush to aid their friends. Yamato is afraid of Gabumon’s health, and Taichi decides to keep seeking for Meicoomon in the meanwhile. Daisuke and Ken are also concerned about their partners, but they can’t stay doing nothing, so their help would be investigating stuff for Koushiro. Miyako, Iori, Takeru and Hikari agree to assist Taichi in the search for Meicoomon.
Meiko and her dad are escorted to the Data Bureau HQ, where they meet Nishijima. With him, there’s a pretty man in light robes, Gennai. They came to discuss Meicoomon’s status and destiny. The girl knew this could mean they had to put Meicoomon down, but…
… It was about one of the scientists in the old program contacting them to allow her complete Meicoomon’s program in order to stop the imminent crisis. Meiko raised an eyebrow at this – She was aware Meicoomon’s program was incomplete, but not totally? Like, Meicoomon had been functioning like a legit digimon being, having a heart and such… What could this woman mean?
The said woman was Himekawa, and Meiko was surprised by that revelation. Why would she…
The reveal
The young kids and their seniors were running against the time. Koushiro had copied the papers Meiko had brought him before so he could read them calmly later, and now he was sitting in his office checking them, again. Tentomon wonders if there’s something interesting in those, only to catch with his eyes some detail they skipped.
The developer of the virus program. He then analyzed the data from V-mon and Wormmon’s eggs and noticed it contained an ID number from the papers, which means the mysterious parasite digimon was also human-made. He checked the developer name and… Maybe Daisuke’s suspicion was right.
Mimi talks with Meiko, and the girl seems a little upset. Mimi tries to ask what happened, but Meiko asks to talk with Koushiro as soon as possible. Meanwhile, Taichi and the 02 group report seeing Meicrackmon on the loose, Koushiro tells them to not approach her and prevent her from hurting people and digimon.
Ken and Daisuke are not great at hacking things, so their plan was asking Himekawa how they could save their digimon from getting their data corrupted. Himekawa knew he would come, especially asking for help.
She talks a bit about her developer function in an old project, that she was this close to fixing corrupted digimon data… But the government ceased their activities. Ken asks how they can save their digimon, and she says she couldn’t do anything without the data under the Data Bureau’s server. The boys look at each other, and she asks them to retrieve that data for her.
They would say something, but Koushiro calls Daisuke immediately. The duo leave after saying they would discuss that with their friends. Koushiro gathered all the info given by each party. It was when Meiko connected the dots and messaged Taichi immediately about a detail. Koushiro also understood what that meant, but Daisuke was a little confused. Until he noticed it too.
Taichi and his juniors were in battle right now, and Meicrackmon was Causing a lot of damage. She then mutated again into Raguelmon. She was even more powerful thanks to the parasite digimon. Silphymon, Shakkoumon and WarGreymon weren’t happy with that, neither were their partners.
Meiko, Daisuke and Ken went to the battle scene immediately. It was when the 02 group, Taichi and Meiko saw Himekawa hiding in a spot. Meiko accuses her of manipulating everyone, and the woman smirks.
Of course they caught her. But it’s okay, she got permission to reactivate the project Mei development in order to stop Meicoomon. Why was she using those kids like that?
It was for Bakumon.
Gennai meets Koushiro
During that climax battle, Gennai came in, with Nishijima, to explain details to Koushiro. The decision to not destroy Meicoomon was unanimous and everyone agreed to keep watching her development. But there was another detail they were trying to avoid – Himekawa’s obsession with bringing her partner back. Nishijima says that he was her friend and teammate, witnessing the fall of them. Himekawa’s digimon dark evolved into Mugendramon and attacked the enemies, but lost control and went on rampage. His partner and the others had to evolve further to stop Mugendramon, who returned to digiegg state. The egg got corrupted and was told it couldn’t hatch, but Himekawa refused to believe it and became obsessed with the idea of creating a program able to fix the problem.
They had to stop her, and since she was using her knowledge as a former Chosen Child for the government, they had more reasons to intervene. Daigo joined the Data Bureau as some “spy” for Gennai and Homeostasis, to keep an eye on her. But now they just discovered she was doing some illegal experiments and created a digimon called Shademon, which can control and corrupt other digimon, and especially cause Meicoomon’s incomplete program to go on a rampage. All of that in order to convince the Data Bureau to reactivate the project development.
Koushiro wasn’t aware of those details, but this was what he and Meiko realized. So now he feels a little disturbed by the consequences of that plan, and then he just wishes they could do something to stop Himekawa and save Meicoomon. He shows the other two the copy of the project’s papers and points to the section about Meicoomon’s restore abilities. Tentomon comments that if they all work together, they can find a way to activate said function.
In the Battlefield, the kids, Taichi and Meiko try so desperately to prevent a disaster. Ken calls Koushiro, to update him about their situation; Daisuke was about to snap, but he’s trying to act cool right now. Koushiro then tells Ken to pass the phone to Hikari, and then he asks the girl to use Angewomon’s healing powers on Meicoomon.
Sure, to do that you will need backup right? WarGreymon and Shakkoumon could do it. Miyako says they could call the others if things get bad, which everyone agreed. Silphymon jogress was undone, and Tailmon evolved to Angewomon. The rest should keep Raguelmon occupied and without touching her, while Angewomon could use her healing powers to exorcize the parasite enemy inside her body.
Back to Koushiro’s office, Nishijima and Gennai keep explaining what happened before, and then Gennai revealed that Bakumon’s egg had hatched but the digimon turned into a Dark Master, the one the kids fought before. Tentomon then asks if the Dark Masters had been reborn, and Gennai says their data got locked in the Dark Area. Nishijima exclaims and asks why they didn't tell him before, only to Gennai explain Bakumon had turned into a vile creature so they couldn’t break the news to him or even Himekawa. Nishijima agreed that could’ve been worse than now.
“So this is what she meant by being a ‘former’ Chosen Child” Koushiro muses. Gennai confirms it, they revoked Himekawa’s access to the Digital World and turned her digivice inactive, she was really out of their reach so this was the best option they could find. Nishijima laments that.
Rampaging Meicoomon
Since Angewomon had holy powers able to extinguish evil and heal the good, their idea was simple: Keep Raguelmon occupied, get Angewomon to use Saint Air at her and then take the chance to destroy Shademon.
Easier said than done.
To protect Angewomon from getting hit by Raguelmon’s claws, they would have to stop her first. But how do you stop a digimon from moving without touching them? These were times Daisuke wished Paildramon could help them, but…
Suddenly, a very beautiful digimon woman appeared – it was Rosemon and she used her whip to grab Raguelmon. They looked behind and saw Mimi coming. The group focused on attacking Raguelmon, but not at full force so they could avoid destroying her.  When Angewomon approached behind her, the holy angel released a heavenly aura to purify the enemy, but it wasn’t enough to beat Shademon. The group was losing their hopes…
Himekawa knows she can’t let them take Raguelmon away from her hands, or else she would never finish her program to save Bakumon, so she inserted a few more codes to induce a new mutation. The laptop overheats due to the max data loaded in it, making Shademon lose control over Raguelmon, turning her extremely feral.
Raguelmon mutates to another higher form, Ordinemon, and starts corroding the barriers of human and digital worlds. The group of digimon fighting her had to retreat for now. Meiko is mad, she snaps at Himekawa for that, and the woman is terrified – everything got worse. She lost the data, she lost her chances to bring Bakumon back!!
Gennai realizes this could mean the end of both worlds if they don’t take her down, Nishijima requests Gennai to gather his and his friends’ partners, in order to fight alongside those kids. By that request, Gennai tells Daigo to bring his friends as soon as possible, and leaves in order to gather the Holy Beasts. Koushiro is intrigued, but he decides to keep helping them all as soon as possible. Koushiro’s desire to help everyone with his knowledge unlocks the HerakleKabuterimon form (outside the building, of course), which he rides in, taking Nishijima with him.
Jou, Yamato and Sora come in, concerned with what was happening. Jou couldn’t take a test at this hour! So he grabbed Gomamon and pedaled his bike til the heart of the battle. Yamato and Sora came together, afraid of what could happen to Taichi, the younger kids and Meiko. Their wishes to protect their beloved ones and their loyalty to their friends unlocked Hououmon and Vikemon for Piyomon and Gomamon. MetalGarurumon carried Yamato and Sora to the battlefield.
The group, almost complete, started to fight Ordinemon as an attempt to stop her. Daisuke clenches his fists, because all he could do was watch. Ken felt even more useless, but he knows even without their seniors being able to evolve their partners, Taichi and the others were able to find ways to help. He had witnessed it, as the Kaiser. Himekawa is still petrified by her mistakes, so she does not notice Ken taking the busted laptop from the ground. He knew soon or later this would come handy, and, if they’re lucky, they can remove the HD disc and connect it to Koushiro’s computer at the office.
They had no other option but to escort people away from that area. Himekawa had no other option but to go with them, and call the Data Bureau to secure the area.
Himekawa discovers the truth about Bakumon
They went back to Koushiro’s office and their digimon just jumped inside the pocket dimension inside the server (Miyako has full access to it, remember?) so it didn’t feel too crowded outside. When Miyako tried to contact Koushiro, the boy replied that he and Nishijima went to gather the Holy Beasts’ partners in order to save the world.
Daisuke went to check the V-mon and Wormmon eggs, just to distract his head for a while. They were fine, but still not hatching. He wouldn’t force it though, he preferred to expect his and Ken’s partners to come at their own pace. Ken was worried about Daisuke’s mental health so he just went to ask if he was okay, and the other boy replied “Yeah, I’m better now. No worries.” which made both smile, one in relief.
Jou and Meiko were staring at Himekawa, who was still lost in her thoughts, broken inside actually. Patamon asks from the screen what they should do with her, and Takeru decides they should at least ask her some info. Taichi is not sure if Himekawa would help them out though. Ken tries connecting the HD disc to Koushiro’s computer with Miyako’s help, and by a great miracle it was still running. They decide to examine its contents, while Jou, Taichi, Yamato and Takeru watch the woman. Iori inspects the HDD with Ken and Miyako. Daisuke is still quietly watching the eggs, and Hikari, Mimi and Sora try to help Meiko cool off.
Meiko had her own reasons to dislike Himekawa after this. And the group was trying to fix Himekawa’s mess, and Daisuke now was aware who was the culprit for what happened to Imperialdramon. But he tries to not get involved with the interrogation, he needs to cool off as well! He needs to cool off…! He and Meiko actually. Sora takes both outside and try to hear them out.
Daisuke growls about what happened, but he doesn’t want to fight a younger adult. Meiko vents about knowing Himekawa for years and never expected her to do something like that before, but now she noticed the red flags. But deep down both Daisuke and Meiko noticed something strange in Himekawa, something they couldn’t be totally mad at her and yes feel pity for. Sora wonders what it would be, and Meiko says “She’s lonely” Daisuke remembers of the dude, Nishijima, who had said to be her ex-boyfriend. All three start thinking of why she would do something like that, if she had a boyfriend before…
Himekawa is still in shock. But she’s coming back down to Earth, little by little. When the kids ask her about what she was aiming for she mentions that her goal was trying to save a digimon from data corruption. Mimi frowns, so that lady had noble reasons… Himekawa continues by saying the Project Mei was her chance to cure data corruption, how close she was from it until the government ceased their operations. Hikari almost snapped, and Taichi saw it in her eyes. Someone connected with the power of life itself like her would feel this narrative was too soulless and toying with the concept of life.
Sora took Daisuke and Meiko to go buy something for them all to eat and drink. The investigation outside gets more and more creepy, as Himekawa starts feeling delusional in front of them, saying maybe now they will let her finish her job! Maybe now she will see Bakumon once again! Hikari snapped politely, “That’s not how you will get your partner back!” and everyone is shocked. She continues: “Meicoomon is suffering right now because of your actions, she’s not a toy! She’s not a tool! V-mon and Wormmon are in the Digiegg stage because of you! ” – That definitely made them all silently look at Hikari, until Takeru says he agrees with her.
Koushiro calls them, saying he and Nishijima just reunited the Holy Beasts’ partners and they’re moving ahead to the battle field. Taichi and Yamato decide they should meet with them and fight Meicoomon. Seven of them agreed, but Miyako said they would stay there trying to find any useful information to help them. Thus, Taichi and the others leave. Piyomon says she wants to go but Sora’s not back yet– And Sora, Daisuke and Meiko come in, with food. Daisuke asks where’s everyone and Iori says they went to face Meicoomon. Piyomon tells Sora she wants to go, and then Daisuke comments she should go and take Meiko with them. Sora’s not sure about this, she doesn’t want to fight a friend’s digimon… Only to Daisuke put a hand on her shoulder and say this would’ve been what Meicoomon wanted. Meiko is a little antsy, but she gets it – Mei-chan would prefer to be destroyed than keep hurting innocent people, especially her friends and family. With those kind words and encouragement, Meiko, Sora and Piyomon go after Taichi and the others. Miyako and Iori smile, because they know exactly where Daisuke got this lesson from.
The group joined forces with the previous generation – Higashikata (Qinglongmon), Kitabayashi (Xuanwumon), Minamino (Zhuqiaomon) and Nishijima (Baihumon) – for this battle. They examined all of their possibilities, but Ordinemon had strong defense by creating dark digimon from her wings. Omegamon was good with numbers, so they decided to let it take care of it. Koushiro analyzed the other Final form digimon’s specialties – and then he discovered Hououmon has an ability which could purify Meicoomon. “Maybe if we combine the divine power of the Holy Beasts with Hououmon’s special ability…”
Holydramon, Seraphimon, Rosemon and Vikemon were in the same group fighting evil digimon while opening the path for Hououmon and the Holy Beasts. It felt a terrible risky idea, but they wanted to give it a shot.
The Miyako, Ken and Iori were so busy searching for anything they could use to stop Ordinemon that they didn’t notice Himekawa leaving the room, but Daisuke did and went after her. The Lady had lost her composure and was trying her best to ‘Save Bakumon’ that the poor boy couldn’t keep watching that disastrous talk. But nothing he could say would make her stop right… She’s beyond salvation. It was when Gennai appeared from a security camera and stood in front of her. Daisuke approached cautiously to hear their conversation. This is how he and Himekwawa learned about Bakumon’s fate – Bakumon had hatched but became a vile creature, and then evolved straight into Megidramon, becoming a Dark Master. Daisuke wonders if said Dark Master was the one Taichi and the others had fought before, and this was exactly what Gennai said next. Mugendramon’s data was sent to the Dark Area, sealed alongside the other three Dark Masters.
Himekawa Maki does not believe it, and condemns Gennai and the others for destroying Bakumon. Daisuke couldn’t stand that and approached a little more. She screams, and falls on her knees, crying loudly and holding Gennai’s robes. Gennai himself did not like to bring bad news, and Daisuke knew it. So, the boy tries to talk with Himekawa… But she was too deep into madness to hear a child out. Gennai apologizes for this, but she does not listen. Suddenly, Data Bureau agents appear and take Himekawa under custody. Daisuke gets confused about how did those people know, only to find out he got something like a small spy wire attached to his goggles. “Since when…!?” It was probably the time he went to save Imperialdramon, maybe??
(No. It was implanted on his goggles when he first met Nishijima. )
Saving Meicoomon
They had to take that chance and purify Ordinemon, so they didn’t want to waste it. The moment they had it, Hououmon and the Holy Beasts gathered their powers and Hououmon used her Starlight Explosion on Ordinemon’s body. Since it was amplified by the godly and holy power of the Holy Beasts, Ordinemon started to be purified.
Ordinemon then converted into Rasielmon. The gloomy atmosphere changed drastically, filled with hope and happiness. Meicoomon didn’t die, and she was purified from Shademon… Which got destroyed by Omegamon’s cannon attack the moment it left Rasielmon’s body.
Rasielmon apologized for her acts, but the kids and the previous Chosen said it wasn’t her and Meiko’s fault. Meiko was so thankful her digimon had turned back to normal. Before reverting into Meicoomon again, Rasielmon said she had to do one more thing, and rushed to Koushiro’s office at the speed of light. Meiko wonders what it is, but the other eight were pretty sure what it was.
Daisuke returned to the office, where Miyako, Ken and Iori were ready to leave and meet their seniors. They say they found out a way to help in the battle and Daisuke grins. Suddenly, Rasielmon appears in a smaller size to not destroy the room and talks to the four. An unfazed Ken then comments “Maybe they solved it without us…” and Daisuke sighs, he wanted to help them all so badly…
Rasielmon then moves to the room with V-mon and Wormmon’s eggs and uses her powers to heal them, making them hatch. Iori finds this curious, only to remember the files said Meicoomon has also an antidote to her own virus program. The eggs hatched into Chicomon and Leafmon, making Daisuke so thankful he immediately hugged Rasielmon as his way to thank her.
Ken also thanks her, but in his own way by bowing and being polite. Rasielmon giggles, and then disappears. She returns to also heal the other eight’s digimon as her apologies, then reverted into Meicoomon and fell on Meiko’s arms.
A few weeks later, Taichi and the group heard some good news regarding Meicoomon: Hououmon and the Holy Beasts’ powers supposedly had helped to finish her program, becoming more stable and suitable for interacting with other people and digimon. Data samples of her special ability – by infecting and controlling digimon with a virus – were used to create vaccines in any case of her accidentally infecting civilized/pacific digimon. Nishijima asked Meiko’s parents to allow her and Meicoomon to be part of the Data Bureau as some honorary agent. Daisuke commented he was a little jealous about that, and that it would’ve been cool to work as some special agent. Koushiro jokes about him already serving in some special unit only to make him go like “??! Really!? Am I a secret agent!?” only to Taichi cut the joke by saying he needs to get a little more mature to handle special agent business. They all laugh, and then they all return to their daily routines.

Whether canon provides input on them or not:
When looking at Meiko's interaction partners in Tri, Koushirou is proooobably not the first person who comes to mind; after Jyou, he may share the least amount of screen time with her. And at pure face value, the interactions he does have with her are mostly indirect - and at first glance, not painted in the best light either. They have that kind of dynamic you definitely have to speculate about more to get to the bottom of it - and interestingly enough, once you do, you may discover that they actually have a few things in common. But we'll get to that.
First things first - as mentioned, they mostly are not seen talking to each other, but rather have a third party person to talk through: Mimi. From a shipping perspective, that is both, an interesting parallel and, at the same time, incredibly complicated. Why? On one hand, because you can see/interpret both Koushirou and Meiko as potential love interests for Mimi (with one of them canonically crushing on her and the other OBVIOUSLY opening up through her encouragement, care and emotional/physical affection). On the other hand... Things do not really get very far in text.
Their main interaction point throughout the first few movies consists of Koushirou trying to figure out what causes the distortions corrupting the Digimon - and by doing so, he ends up interrogating Meiko in a very uncomfortable and unfortunate moment, that causes Mimi to snap at him. She says that he's being insensitive, he says they don't have time to focus on "trivial things", completely overlooking her emotional distress in order to fix things as quickly as possible. As mentioned, not the best foundation for any kind of relationship, as Meiko is completely overwhelmed with her partner being corrupted - while Koushirou is desperately trying to stop the cause from spreading even further. And she is aware of his good intentions there - because Taichi explains to her that Koushirou means to investigate the whole thing "with his entire heart" and that that's "all he can do", indirectly asking her to not be mad at him for being "like that". This even leads to her contemplating to apologize to him. Mimi insists that she doesn't have to - and we actually never see the end of that conflict, just the glimpse of hope that Sora's words, "He'll figure it out", will eventually lead to good things...
The next notable interaction is by the very end of Tri - as seen above -, where he entrusts her with his beloved laptop to find out the key to locked-away data, a password only she is capable of knowing, to eventually and actually fix everything in the end.
So what does that tell the viewer? They may not have a lot of significant interpersonal interaction - but subtext indicates that Koushirou strongly believes in Meiko being able to be the key, to find the answers to their problems. He did so by interrogating her, he did so by handing her his laptop - and that is a very familiar pattern.
Not trying to go too much into detail here, but one of my personal favourite headcanons is that, Meiko is what Koushirou COULD have become if he hadn't been as lucky as he was; to be raised by loving parents and getting validated by them upon reconciling; to befriend seven (and eventual eleven) kids and their personal soulmates to figure himself out, friends that ALSO believed in him and his strengths; to be enabled by his best friend to come to Summer camp and come out of his shell in the first place - and to solve a card riddle that would solve a very significant issue. Meiko is incredibly insecure, she had been on her own for a very long time, her low self-esteem goes so far as to have her ask why she was even there in the first place - she visibly needs someone loud and vocal like Mimi to show her how capable she is, just like Koushirou needed Taichi and Tentomon in the same manner. And this may be a huge stretch, because other characters (such as Taichi, Mimi, Sora, Hikari and Takeru) have been WAY more direct and vocal about encouraging her verbally - but Koushirou (who absolutely CAN suffer from severe self-esteem issues as well once he doesn't consider himself "useful") may have passed his own personal torch here in a more subtle, non-verbal way.
Long story short - there is not exactly nothing, but y'all have a lot of guessing work and subtext interpretation to do here.
Whether I think why and how they’d work:
As mentioned above, there are some very subtle similarities that may or may not help them to bond with each other. First of all, it shall not be underestimated that they both have a significant connection with each Mimi and Taichi - and especially the former case may be very enthusiastic to MAKE them spend more time with each other. (Abridged!Mimi may even go so far as to say "I'll make my two nerds have a good time, ha!") I really do believe that Mimi herself could be a great starting point AND topic for them to bond over. "She really is like that, isn't she?", in a gentle, lighthearted way. Because they may have issues opening up fully for some time, due to their bad experiences with interpersonal interaction - but I would argue that they're both also the type that just has to get over that point with each other ONCE and then don't have any issues afterwards anymore. They just need a "starting point". Taichi may actually be a good starting point as well, because both of them may have anecdotes (and their mentioned similarities) to share with each other fondly. Again, there are a lot of self-worth issues they need to overcome first, but once they do, I could imagine them being very soft (and potentially rambly).
(I also have the headcanon that Koushirou likes cats - not only should he have grown up interacting with Hikari and Miko a lot, but his own partner, supposedly a ladybug, has very cat-like tendencies and THAT absolutely should be a bonding topic too!)
Whether I’d prefer them as platonic or romantic ship:
I may argue that, romantically, they MIGHT actually both be not straight-forward enough to get anywhere for a long time and due to the lack of canon interactions, I can only work off the formerly mentioned headcanons... So it may take Mimi and an OT3 setting for things to work out properly. Because hey, with Mimi being the driving force connecting and intertwining them, things could escalate very quickly (because, as mentioned, they're both enchanted by her and have panicked over her being physical with them, they share that fondness for her, so why not channel that energy into a mutual bond as well? And again, the same could apply to Taichi too, because he brought BOTH of them out of their shell to some degree and was VERY protective of them at some point, but I digress). Without that driving force, I'd rather see them as platonic. They're both very supportive (and nerdy) people in their own ways, but nothing too deep on the romantic end.
