But when an all-too-familiar type of horror begins to wreak havoc on the world, and threatens to swallow the sun itself, Skyrim calls on her hero - and, for one last time, he reluctantly answers.

And into his life walks a dead woman who might just be the only who can show him how to live again.

More students gain eligibility for free school meals under expanded USDA program

Roughly 3,000 additional school districts serving more than 5 million students will now be eligible, officials said.

Millions of additional students in schools serving low-income communities will be eligible to receive breakfast and lunch at no cost under a rule change announced Tuesday by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

At schools where 25% of families participate in income-based public benefits, such as the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program, the federal government now will cover the cost of free meals for all enrolled students. Previously, the qualifying threshold was 40%.

Roughly 3,000 additional school districts serving more than 5 million students will now be eligible, officials said.

“While there is still more work ahead to ensure every K-12 student in the nation can access healthy school meals at no cost, this is a significant step on the pathway toward that goal,” said Stacy Dean, USDA deputy under secretary for Food, Nutrition, and Consumer Services.

During the pandemic, Congress temporarily made universal meals free to all students, but that ended last year. Other federal programs that provided direct food assistance to families also scaled down amid soaring food prices, putting strains on family budgets and leaving some kids hungry.

Meantime, eight states — California, Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Mexico and Vermont — have made school meals free to all students regardless of income.

The new rule will expand access to universal meals through a program known as the Community Eligibility Provision, or CEP. Instead of requiring families to fill out individual applications for free or reduced-price meals, schools participating in the program receive federal funding based on income data, with local or state money filling in any gaps in the cost of offering meals to all students. Advocates say reducing administrative burdens like applications helps ensure children don’t go hungry.

Some have criticized the costs of the program. The Republican Study Committee has called for eliminating the CEP altogether, arguing it ignores the individual income eligibility of each student.

Nationally, expanding a community-based model of universal meals would alleviate burdens on many families, said Anna Korsen, policy and program director at Full Plates Full Potential, a nonprofit organization in Maine that works on maximizing access to school meals.

“The federal poverty guidelines that dictate who gets a free meal and who doesn’t are really outdated,” Korsen said. “There are so many families that on paper don’t qualify for a free meal, and they can get lumped into this group of ... families that can afford to pay for lunch or breakfast at school. But really, those families are living paycheck to paycheck.”

Agriculture secretary Tom Vilsack said the rule change is a step toward fulfilling the promise of healthy school meals for all. “Increasing access to free, healthy school breakfast and lunch will decrease childhood hunger, improve child health and student readiness, and put our nation on the path to better nutrition and wellness,” he said. *Reposted article from the Associated Press by Annie Ma on September 26, 2023

Korsisch und Baskisch

Diese Woche war meine letzte im mehrsprachigen Service Center und ich hatte nette Gespräche mit zwei verschiedenen Kunden aus Frankreich, einem Korsen und einem Basken. Der Korse hat mir erklärt, wie man Ortsnamen auf seiner Insel richtig ausspricht: “Auf Korsika haben wir nicht so viel zu essen, daher essen wir die letzte Silbe” (d. h. diese wird nicht gesprochen). Der Baske hatte einen Nachnamen auf Etche- und erklärte mir, das bedeute “Haus” und daher fangen viele baskische Nachnamen so an. Wäre ich länger geblieben, hätte ich vielleicht irgendwann sagen können, wo die Grenze zwischen “huitante” und “quatre-vingts” verläuft. Sie ist nicht identisch mit der Landesgrenze zwischen Frankreich und der Schweiz.

Rineike’s smile is faint but sincere to Loki’s words. A wild wolf heart of a Visser can find a reflection in the untamed fierceness of a Jansen wolf. While all fighters of their pack wield formidable strength, it’s the Jansen’s unpredictable approach that gives them that notorious edge. “Jeg har alltid likt deg, Loki. Og brødrene dine. Jeg skulle ønske det var flere av dere her når vi kjemper.” despite gentle words, Rineike speaks as she always does. A measured coldness, firm but not without meaning. “You said you believed Thorin was dead, hm? And he is here. Maybe it is time to search for others.”

Loki’s question makes her scoff, but Rineike grasps the need of wariness with Ruben staying with them. It’s not something she favors either, but right now, after so long with only her and Cas, there is something reassuring with growing numbers. “He is strong, Loki. And he swore to stand with us, which is more than anything Fiene has offered in weeks.” she speaks bitterly about the deserter and she thinks she always will. Rineike believes it's only a matter of time before Fi will be forced to leave again, into the clutches of Crosses now as she deserves. With more Visser wolves to contend with, Rineike thinks she'd be stupid not to. But for now, she revels in the softness Loki shines with. That fatal grin of his hiding sad eyes. She hums in pretend sympathy. "That is always the way, hm? We give them the power to hurt us, but the trust they will not. Only to look like a fool." Rineike scoffs. "Vi dreper ikke korsene ennå. Det er for tidlig, og jeg vil ha flere av oss. Jeg vil at de skal være ut nummerert på alle måter. So wait. Patience."

"Ikke for meg, Rineike. Jeg venter i skyggen til du ringer meg." he doesn't say this bitterly, it's a simple statement of fact from Loki. Even he would call it foolish if he was ever called upon for anything but a battle. His twisted mind would only ever see where blood should be shed. And as amusing as he finds weaving tales, he can't bear to have to wait. If a Jansen wolf ever led a pack...well. It would look a lot like the mess his brother caused. Although, it's not a mess in Loki's opinion.

He laughs with his Beta, true enjoyment on his lips as they judge the other wolves harshly. None of them have lived the same lives as the Visser pack, Loki can only note curious similarities. But, outsiders all seem to lack something. "Og likevel ville du beholde en hos oss?" he asks only about Ruben, convinced that the outsider already had his use. Why is he still here? His chuckles emit, a childish sound as Rineike not only jests at his warming heart but at the thumb Esje has been under during her life. "I gave her it." another simple comment, made with a light tone and finished with a coy smile. But, he then nods to the warning, albeit reaching his ears a little too late. "Mm," Loki ponders Rineike's words but is ever dutiful and ready for when the moment he's needed. "Korsene. Når dreper vi dem?"
