So today is costume test day! It means I get to figure out that my elbows are totally exposed because I cut too much fabric away from the sleeves but that it still looks pretty good for a costume I made in three days! I’m going to be making the belt and the trim for the collar next and that will probably be where I finish this costume :)

Coriander Colored Nonsense

I wasn’t going to touch upon this because it’s, um... stupid, but this topic seems to be gaining traction all over the internet. There’s a pretty decent cosplayer out in the Nords known as Wanderlustluca, or Thatstarwarsgirl77 on the Tweeters. She’s rather prolific in her hobby, dressing up as all kinds of sh*t and, for the most part, pulls that stuff off pretty adeptly. As a card carrying Weeb, cosplay is one of my cultural wheelhouses and i have to say, she’s pretty okay at it. I’ve seen some better creations, but you can see she respects the source material of her costumes, which is more than i can say for some actual, big budget, studios renditions. Luca has earned the ire of the purple hairs on the internet for cosplaying as Starfire. Apparently, Lust cosplaying as an orange alien is racist. Racist. People are actually making the argument that dressing up as a literal, tangerine colored, extraterrestrial, is racist. Let us, together, unpack this literally crazy notion for what it is.

Starfire’s real name is Koriand’r. Which was the color of her goddamn skin originally. Kori didn’t turn orange until the Teen Titans cartoon came out on Cartoon Network. Apparently, that is the point of contention. The fact that Lust went the extra mile for authenticity and got a spray tan, turning herself orange to match the comic source material, is why there is all this racist outry. What even is the problem? If we’re going by that stupid logic, how is 45′s super terrible bottle tan not racist? How are the kids from Jersey Shore not wildly racist? Hell, half of those motherf*ckers weren’t even Italian. The one was actually Irish! I didn’t hear anyone screaming racism or cultural appropriation back then so why the f*ck is this a thing now? How is it a thing in this, specific, circumstance?? Starfire is a f*cking cartoon, man! A f*cking cartoon alien, in fact! But, okay. Fine. Let’s just say her race is the same as her species; Tamaraneon. She’s still a f*cking alien! She’s literally an impossibility for which to ascribe race. How can someone be racist for portraying a character that has no race?

Starfire is orange. And an alien. From deep space. Her “race”, which is just as made up as she is, happens to be Tamaraneon. They hail from the planet of Tamaran. Not Earth. In deep space. In a f*cking comic book. Everything about this character is made up. It’s fake. It’s all imagination and f*cking drawings by George Perez, man. If he made her purple, and Lust took a dip in a pool of crayola, would she be racist then, too? How do you describe a terrestrial bias to an extraterrestrial? That sh*t is inherently flawed. I know that Anna Diop, a black woman, is playing her in the current Titans run but that sh*t is bad, man. It’s a terrible interpretation of the character and i, as a black man, feel like she was wildly miscast. That’s not what Starfire looks like to me. Diop got that part because “Oscars so White”. Plus, her bit of natural melanin saves on body paint and effects work. Painting Kori orange every episode would get real expensive, real fast. However, if you just do it once, for a f*cking cosplay, it ain’t that hefty on the pockets and will probably be praised way more than the cost-cutting shortcuts taken by a budget-minded television production, which i think is the real problem. Wanderlustlucas is a direct challenge to the current Starfire with the most visibility.

Diop, being a black woman in the current Starfire role on Titans, is considered stunning and brave. It’s a shining example of representation. It’s the the tip of that color-blind spear to stab at all of this “woke” white guilt. Titans is not a better show because Diop is one of the leads, it’s just chock full of pandering visibility. All these little SJWs and Purple hairs are upset some super white, northern viking European, cosplay celebrity, is doing more justice to the character than the DC diversity hire, which is an actual point to be made. Why is Diop actually Starfire when she skews so far from the source material? George Perez is Puerto Rican. Starfire’s real name is Korand’r. Coriander is a spice used prolifically in Puerto Rican cuisine. Starfire’s original design was chock full of gigantic, flaming, curly brown hair. Starfire, if she’s anything, is f*cking obviously Puerto Rican or, at the very least, Hispanic in origin. Why is there no outrage for Diop in the role over some Puerto Rican actress? Because it doesn’t f*cking matter! Diversity in these circles is a joke and as long as there’s a token black in your cast, your show gets the pass, Even if that person marginalizes another minority group. That hypocrisy, alone, makes this racism argument f*ckin dumb.

Ultimately, what you have is a bunch of butt-hurt try-hards upset a white woman created a more comics accurate version of a character they want more than anything to be diverse. But that’s an impossibility because the character in question, aside from being completely made up, is a f*cking orange alien. A fan who happened to be white, created a pretty legit cosplay, one that is so much more accurate than the actual, officially released costume in the poorly written, PC vehicle currently airing. Not everything is about politics. Not everything is about visibility or representation. Let fans be fans, man. Let creators create. I’m so goddamn tired of Mary Sues and representation outcry and the worst version of Feminism, ever. Wanderlustluca did a great job with her homage. Give the chick her credit and move on, man. there are much larger battles that need fighting.

Robstar Week day 2: Cosplay

Don’t Hide It

The only reason I put “Robstar Week” on the tittle, is so that people know that’s my entry. But it’s nice having a word that must be the center theme of the story, else, I would’ve never thought of writing this.

I’m sorry I’m taking so long. I have a few proyects going on and I must supervise all of them. You know how in every group of friends, there’s the “Mom” friend, because they’re the responsible ones? Well, I’m the mom, and I have to help my children not to fuck up

Summary: Starfire doesn’t think she is the right person to cosplay. Who else can make her change her mind but the boy wonder himself?

Starfire stared at her reflection with a frown. This was the third time she changed clothes and hair style, and still not one outfit had convinced her. She took off her black wig and let her hair down from it’s updo. She placed the fake hair contraption on her bed, along with all of her failed attempts.

“Let’s see: Not The Wasp, not Hinata, and definitely not Sailor Mars...Ugh!!!” Kori plopped down into her bed and closed her eyes. There was nothing she could do at this time. She tried to think of a plan that could save her from not going. She could pretend to be sick...but that would make some of her friends worry and take care of her, and Robin and her would also miss the convention. What about saying that she had to go to a special and urgent mission that The Batman had encomended her and her only? No, Robin would immediately contact him, explaining that this was the Titans day off, and that was something NO-ONE messed with (after Tokyo, Robin took vacations seriously).

Starfire sat up and begun to gather all the costumes to hide them under her bed. What was she thinking when she said yes to cosplay?! She had never done this before, she only could do so much with the time that she had been given, and, most troublesome of all, she had ORANGE SKIN. No amount of makeup in the world would cover it up to look like the characters she liked from comics, books or anime. She would never be able to cosplay without looking ridiculous. But her thoughts were interrupted when there was a knock on her door.

“Star? Can I come in for a sec?”. It was her three month boyfriend, Richard Grayson. She remembered when he talked to her about the Con of the Comic. How marvelled he had seemed at the hundreds of entertainments and how his eyes had glimmered when he spoke about the cosplay. His exact words lingered on her head: “I’ve always wanted to do it, but it felt dumb to do it alone”. Well, she being his girlfriend, and not wanting to disappoint him, what other thing could she do but say yes?

“Y-yes, of course, boyfriend Robin.” She threw the garments on her hands to one corner of the room in an attempt to ignore them and not worry her lover. Richard came into the room and closed the door. He turned around and noticed the worried grin on her favourite alien’s face, almost like a fake smile, as if she was trying to hide something. He placed a quick peck on her left cheek, making her blush slightly. He took a step back and extended his arms, grabbing her wrists gently.

“Why the long face, Kori? Something I can help you with?”. Koriand’r looked to one side, then the other, avoiding his gaze. Finally, she closed her eyes and directed her head to the floor. Robin used one hand and placed it on her chin, lifting up her eyes so that they met his. She slowly moved her lips, barely making a whisper. Dick tried to close the space between them, so that he and only he could hear whatever she had to say. “Sorry, what did you say?”. Yet it didn’t work, as Starfire turned around and hugged herself. Richard, oblivious to what was happening, pleaded. “Please, don’t hide what’s wrong. I want to help”

“I’m sorry! I’m so sorry for how I look, and for not knowing so much of the shows as you, and for promising something that is simply impossible for me, and for disappointing you and...!”. She was cut of by a passionate kiss on her lips. Robin had placed his hands on her waist and gone for it. Star was so surprised, she didn’t close her eyes at first, but relaxed into it when the tears couldn’t let her see anymore. The small drops fell through her cheeks and into her mouth, allowing both to taste the saltiness. One of his hands trailed its way up to her face, cupping it and stroking the back of her ear with his fingertips. After a couple of minutes, Dick pulled apart their lips, but kept their faces close, making their foreheads touch to stay connected.

“There’s absolutely nothing to be sorry about. There’s nothing wrong with the way you look, the way you are, ever. Because you are the most amazing person I have aver and could’ve ever encountered in my life, okay?” Kori didn’t say anything, only nodded. “Okay, so in summary, and from what I gathered, you can’t find a costume, right?”. Richard stepped back and looked around. A couple of clothes were laying messily in the corner of the room, and a wig had hooked itself on the edge of an open drawer.

“No, you would be correct on that. My skin is too orange, while all of the characters have a paler complexion. Also, there are not many redheads that I like and can do the cosplay of them, at least, not without being too revealing”. Both of them blushed at the thought of her revealing too much. “Not for others eyes but mine” , Robin thought, although he knew it would be a long time until that moment came. “I cannot help but think that I will look ridiculous, no matter what costume I wear”.

“Star, that’s exactly what cosplay is about” Kori looked confused. “Sorry, let me explain. Cosplay is about feeling like the character you are portraying, and taking pictures with the people that admire them just as much as you do. It’s about getting into those clothes and feeling invincible, and everyone appreciating all the details put into the hole ensemble. Yeah, you can look amazing, but sometimes you can look ridiculous, especially if you are an amateur like us. But all the people on the convention don’t care, because they know they are dorky too. That’s the best about the convention, we can all be dorks together! And look ridiculous together!”. Richard took a step back and flung his arms in the air, making Starfire giggle a little. He then realized he was getting carried away, and took a deep breath. “Look, what I’m trying to say is that, yeah, we will probably look ridiculous, but we´ll do it together! And the people at Comic-con can’t judge us because there was a time in which they looked ridiculous too. It takes a lot of bravery to cosplay, and that someone shows up dressed up like a character is already something to applaud, even if they look weird and have a lot of things from the character missing. So, don’t ever think you could look ridiculous, okay?”

Kori blushed and rose a hand to her cheek, delighted by the words that her soul mate had spoken. It was one of the reasons they were both attracted to the other: they always knew the right words to say when the other was in distress. She smiled cutesely and closed her eyes, radiating happiness all over the bedroom. Dick secretly loved that smile from her, and she knew it. He stretched his arms out and grabbed both her hands. “So, do you still wanna cosplay? Or do you want us to go in our civilian clothes?"

Star softly smiled and asked "What would you suggest, Robin?". She looked at the stash of discarded clothes, still very unsure of them, as she kept thinking she hadn’t found the right one. The thoughts of not going crawled to her mind again, and Richard probably felt it too, as he replied.

"It makes no difference to me. I think you always look gorgeous. But if I had to choose, there’s someone that you can go as without having to put a second hand wig, and you are just as, if not more of a badass than her”. He went into her closet and got out a simple pale yellow t-shirt. He turned on his steps and headed through the door. “Be right back, I gotta go get something for you”.

As the pair holded hands, they headed into the building, and both marveled on the wonders inside. Starfire could not believe such creations could come into live so realistically. Robin stared at his girlfriend up and down: A dark green dress, a pale yellow shirt and a blue bracelet, combined with her red mane, made the perfect Kushina Uzumaki.

“Oh, Richard, such a display of joyful people was not something I could have ever thinked of. You spoke incredible things about the Con of the Comic, but this is simply...spectacular!! And you had the best idea too!” She eyed him carefully, analyzing his ensemble: the white robe with the painted red flames, navy blue shirt and pants, a simple green vest, and a blue headband with a metal rectangle, engraved with a leaf, attached to it. “I must admit, you make a great Minato, although we didn’t manage to find the wig”.

“Nor the right vest either, but it really doesn’t matter, I’m glad that we came here like this. See that everyone likes it?”. Dick nudged his head to the side, signaling a couple of fans that were pointing at them in awe and taking pictures from afar.

“You were absolutely right. I did not know there was a thing such as a couples costume. It is the best idea”. She also hadn’t told him, but Minato Namikaze was one of her favourite characters from Naruto. Plus, having the day with Richard, dressed as one of her favourite characters, without him covering his cerulean eyes for her to explore? Starfire was having a blast, and she had all day to enjoy. What did it matter if their costumes were not the best? Or if they looked a bit ridiculous compared to others? She was having the time of her life, taking pictures with fans and others that were doing cosplay of her favourite characters. It didn’t matter that her skin was orange, or that her eyes were green and Kushina’s were blue. Fans appreciated courage, and creativity. But above all, they loved self expression, especially because events like this were designed to express themselves. Being on this embracing community, how could she ever have thought that she would embarrass Robin? So she embraced her weirdness just like she had before, and never hid her insecurities from him, or anyone, ever again.

Titans’ Starfire Looks Like a Hooker

I just saw a picture of Starfire on CW’s New Teen Titans show. And I haven’t seen anything that looked this bad since Halle Berry’s Catwoman Costume.

Damn. Just Damn.

What so sad about Teen Titans is Raven looks like Raven. Beast Boy looks like Beast Boy. Robin looks like Robin. But Starfire? In between that dollar store wig from the Halloween store and that 99-cent store dress, she looks like the hooker version Barney the Purple Dinosaur turning tricks on Times Square.

I don’t know who this is, but it’s NOT Starfire. Koriand’r is supposed to be Cute. Sexy. Fun and vivacious. Model GOREGOUS. The girl who can make a guy’s dick hard just by walking down the street.

When I look at this picture I don’t get an erection. All I want to do is vomit.

Seriously, what’s the budget for this Teen Titans show? Food Stamps? I’ve seen Cosplays that BLOW THE DOORS off this hot mess.

I don’t see anything resembling the character Marv Wolfman and George Perez created back in the 1980s. This actress looks like she has none of Kory’s sweetness, bubbliness, personality or heart. She doesn’t look anything like the girl who could make Dick Grayson fall in love with her.

Yeah, DC and WB want to add diversity to The Teen Titans by giving us a Black Starfire. But it’s clear they didn’t want to make her more attractive than the White women on the show. So they trotted out the fattest, darkest, ugliest woman they could find and found ways to make her look even more hideous. And then say this is a positive step in the name of diversity.

FUCK YOU WARNER BROTHERS. FUCK YOU.

This Black Starfire is an INSULT TO BLACK PEOPLE. A passive aggressive slap in the face to Black people by White Supremacists at WB. The very image of her isn’t true to the source material, it just breathes brand new life into old stereotypes about Black women. Instead of casting the sexiest Black woman you could find to play one of DC’s sexiest women, WB cast a mammysaurus. And the reason why the White Supremacists at DC and WB did this was to make a Black woman not appear to be sexually attractive to the audience.

Because Heaven forbid an iconic character like Dick Grayson can’t be shown being attracted to a sexy Black woman. No, we can’t have the #3 Character at DC Comics getting a boner at the sight of a beautiful sexy Black woman.

Because in WB’s attempt to promote so-called Diversity they just practice old-fashioned racism. Just like Rose Tico in Star Wars, we have a character of color in a fantasy series. But the studio does everything to make her as unattractive as possible in comparison to her White counterparts.

What’s sad about this diversity hire is that it compromises the New Teen Titans story. Dick and Kory’s relationship is one of the essential parts of the New Teen Titans history. And there’s no way I can see Dick Grayson wanting to have a relationship with a hungry hungry hippo like this. The whole point of Dick and Kory’s relationship was that Kory appeared to be WAY out of Dick’s league. But in spite of their differences, they found love for each other And it was Kory’s love for Dick that helped him get through the tough times as he was transitioning from Batman’s sidekick to leading The Titans and becoming his own man, Nightwing.

If WB is making compromises with Starfire’s look, then it’s clear to me they’re gonna make compromises with their love story. And if they make a compromise with Dick and Kory’s story then I know I can’t expect much from this Teen Titans show. After seeing this Starfire, I’m seeing another disastrous DC Comics adaptation from Warner Brothers.

Coriander Colored Nonsense

I wasn’t going to touch upon this because it’s, um... stupid, but this topic seems to be gaining traction all over the internet. There’s a pretty decent cosplayer out in the Nords known as Wanderlustluca, or Thatstarwarsgirl77 on the Tweeters. She’s rather prolific in her hobby, dressing up as all kinds of sh*t and, for the most part, pulls that stuff off pretty adeptly. As a card carrying Weeb, cosplay is one of my cultural wheelhouses and i have to say, she’s pretty okay at it. I’ve seen some better creations, but you can see she respects the source material of her costumes, which is more than i can say for some actual, big budget, studios renditions. Luca has earned the ire of the purple hairs on the internet for cosplaying as Starfire. Apparently, Lust cosplaying as an orange alien is racist. Racist. People are actually making the argument that dressing up as a literal, tangerine colored, extraterrestrial, is racist. Let us, together, unpack this literally crazy notion for what it is.

Starfire’s real name is Koriand’r. Which was the color of her goddamn skin originally. Kori didn’t turn orange until the Teen Titans cartoon came out on Cartoon Network. Apparently, that is the point of contention. The fact that Lust went the extra mile for authenticity and got a spray tan, turning herself orange to match the comic source material, is why there is all this racist outry. What even is the problem? If we’re going by that stupid logic, how is 45′s super terrible bottle tan not racist? How are the kids from Jersey Shore not wildly racist? Hell, half of those motherf*ckers weren’t even Italian. The one was actually Irish! I didn’t hear anyone screaming racism or cultural appropriation back then so why the f*ck is this a thing now? How is it a thing in this, specific, circumstance?? Starfire is a f*cking cartoon, man! A f*cking cartoon alien, in fact! But, okay. Fine. Let’s just say her race is the same as her species; Tamaraneon. She’s still a f*cking alien! She’s literally an impossibility for which to ascribe race. How can someone be racist for portraying a character that has no race?

Starfire is orange. And an alien. From deep space. Her “race”, which is just as made up as she is, happens to be Tamaraneon. They hail from the planet of Tamaran. Not Earth. In deep space. In a f*cking comic book. Everything about this character is made up. It’s fake. It’s all imagination and f*cking drawings by George Perez, man. If he made her purple, and Lust took a dip in a pool of crayola, would she be racist then, too? How do you describe a terrestrial bias to an extraterrestrial? That sh*t is inherently flawed. I know that Anna Diop, a black woman, is playing her in the current Titans run but that sh*t is bad, man. It’s a terrible interpretation of the character and i, as a black man, feel like she was wildly miscast. That’s not what Starfire looks like to me. Diop got that part because “Oscars so White”. Plus, her bit of natural melanin saves on body paint and effects work. Painting Kori orange every episode would get real expensive, real fast. However, if you just do it once, for a f*cking cosplay, it ain’t that hefty on the pockets and will probably be praised way more than the cost-cutting shortcuts taken by a budget-minded television production, which i think is the real problem. Wanderlustlucas is a direct challenge to the current Starfire with the most visibility.

Diop, being a black woman in the current Starfire role on Titans, is considered stunning and brave. It’s a shining example of representation. It’s the the tip of that color-blind spear to stab at all of this “woke” white guilt. Titans is not a better show because Diop is one of the leads, it’s just chock full of pandering visibility. All these little SJWs and Purple hairs are upset some super white, northern viking European, cosplay celebrity, is doing more justice to the character than the DC diversity hire, which is an actual point to be made. Why is Diop actually Starfire when she skews so far from the source material? George Perez is Puerto Rican. Starfire’s real name is Korand’r. Coriander is a spice used prolifically in Puerto Rican cuisine. Starfire’s original design was chock full of gigantic, flaming, curly brown hair. Starfire, if she’s anything, is f*cking obviously Puerto Rican or, at the very least, Hispanic in origin. Why is there no outrage for Diop in the role over some Puerto Rican actress? Because it doesn’t f*cking matter! Diversity in these circles is a joke and as long as there’s a token black in your cast, your show gets the pass, Even if that person marginalizes another minority group. That hypocrisy, alone, makes this racism argument f*ckin dumb.

Ultimately, what you have is a bunch of butt-hurt try-hards upset a white woman created a more comics accurate version of a character they want more than anything to be diverse. But that’s an impossibility because the character in question, aside from being completely made up, is a f*cking orange alien. A fan who happened to be white, created a pretty legit cosplay, one that is so much more accurate than the actual, officially released costume in the poorly written, PC vehicle currently airing. Not everything is about politics. Not everything is about visibility or representation. Let fans be fans, man. Let creators create. I’m so goddamn tired of Mary Sues and representation outcry and the worst version of Feminism, ever. Wanderlustluca did a great job with her homage. Give the chick her credit and move on, man. there are much larger battles that need fighting.

1) This blog makes me really happy?? I was concerned about joining the fandom, since I saw how close everyone was when I first started following people. A big shout out to @thekingofgayandsalt for convincing me to join the Discord group

 2) I love animals with all my heart, and I have the two cutest cats. They’re brother and sister named Ikki and Meelo (based on Legend of Korra characters). I work at a wildlife rehabilitation & rescue center too, and it warms my heart when I found out what animals got released this week. I made a difference to do some good there, ya feel?

3) Cosplaying. I love the feeling of bringing someone’s favorite character to life. It’s also nice when you get to see the creativity and dedication people put into their work. I’ve seen some people do amazing things with it, and it inspires me to put my all into my cosplays.

4) I love cheesy pickup lines l m a o. Like I use them all the time on my friends. “That shirt looks good on you, but it’d look better on my floor.” Although my favorite is, “Is that a mirror in your pocket? Because I can see myself in your pants.” 8)
