What are the differences between early American architecture and Korean architecture? American architecture is a hybrid of many types, mainly from Europe. New England, as you might guess, was originally settled by colonists from England, remaking what they considered a “wilderness” into a new England, quite literally. They kept their traditional housing, with little consideration for the architecture or lifestyles of the Native Americans. They also introduced the concept of private property (owned and used by a single party) to the “New World”, with many consequences. In contrast, Korea had retained the idea of owning land for many hundreds of years, with most of the landholdings belonging to an upper class, much like Europe. Korea followed Confucian, not Christian, ideals, which translated to separating male and female spaces.
Korea also had ondol heating, which allowed the home to be heated much more comfortably than in European homes, which relied on hearths throughout the house. So while European homes built up to retain the heat as much as possible, Korean upper class homes spread out luxuriously over the land.

Chico & Chica House | Design by Cho and Partners | Photo by Haewook Jeong © Located Hongeun-dong, South Korea📍 . Follow @habitat.theory . Hongeun-dong building owner couple are people who know their lifestyle exactly and enjoy living their lives. In addition, they knew how to ask this clearly to an architect. Because of these aspects, Hongeun-dong house started with an effort contain the way the couple deal with their lives. The land on Hongeun-dong hill has many difficulties for a young couple in their early 30s to establish their newlywed home. It is a place where you have to climb up a steep slope where there is no public transportation for a while. However, there is a beautiful view in front of your eyes that can compensate for the inconvenience. They have chosen the place where they can maximize the value they pursue rather than worrying about minor inconveniences in life. I think it might have been the best place for the couple who always wanted to have a country house with a panoramic view. #southkorea #southkoreaarchitecture #koreanarchitecture #Chico&ChicaHouse #choandpartners #modernarchitecture #modernresidentialdesign #modernresidentialarchitecture #modern #architecturephotography #homedesign #residentialarchiecture #concretedesign #contemporaryarchitecture #singlefamilyhome (at South Korea)

Ondol in Korean traditional architecture, is underfloor heating similar to a Kang bed-stove that uses direct heat transfer from wood smoke to heat the underside of a thick masonry floor. In modern usage it refers to any type of underfloor heating, or to a hotel or a sleeping room in Korean (as opposed to Western) style. The main components of the traditional ondol are an agungi (firebox or stove) accessible from an adjoining room (typically kitchen or master bedroom), a raised masonry floor underlain by horizontal smoke passages, and a vertical, freestanding chimney on the opposite exterior wall providing a draft. The heated floor, supported by stone piers or baffles to distribute the smoke, is covered by stone slabs, clay and an impervious layer such as oiled paper.
