Week 52.4/52: December 25th - December 31st 2023 | Mr. Beggar Grill 🥩
AHHHH how I've missed this group! Was a nice catch up dinner at Mr. Beggar Grill. We ate lots of bbq beef, pork and lamb (also chicken skewers + mushrooms). Got a bowl of spicy cold noodles to share to rid the greasiness. They gave a cash discount so it ended up being only $25 pp after tax & tip. Their service was questionable but the price is so nice LMAO considering we did eat a lot. We went to a bbt place to talk some more after eating (where Weekend Tea used to be). Always nice to talk to everyone.

Naengmyeon @ Dookbaeki
Having naengmyeon after a hike in the blazin’ heat is . .. AMAZING!!!
At the beginning of June, a few coworkers & I were able to match our schedules & go for an afternoon hike. I can’t tell you where exactly we went. .. we went into 3 different parks apparently. One of the girls who went is very familiar with the trails so I just followed. Despite going at 1630h (start time), it was still so hot!! >.< I say we ‘hiked’ but it was more like a walk for most of it. We went for abut 2 hrs & then decided on going for cold noodles/naengmyeon bcos we were feeling so hot, & naengmyeon was the perfect choice to deal with that haha
We went to Dookbaeki. They had the spicy version of the cold noodles & I had the regular version. I added not only the mustard but the vinegar as well! Yup, I’m working up to it hahaha it is an acquired taste & it took me yrs to get here :’)
We also shared a large sundae - I didn’t take a close-up individual shot but you can kind of see it in the background. It was ‘large’ but it really wasn’t that large. My companions are Korean & they thought it would come with the liver meats but it didn’t. The sundae pieces were cut into oval shapes & laid out flat so it appeared as a full plate but I’d say it was probably just 2 ‘sausages’. If you know, you know!! Soooo don’t get it! [PS: it came with a spicy salt & a ssam-jang sauce so you have 2 choices of ‘dip’]
It was so refreshing~ :D
& now, sharing some unfiltered photos from the hike.

no. 4 .. . Is it just me or does the design of the bridge look like a geometric rose vector???
no. 5 .. . this was taken from the bridge.
no. 6 .. . the other side, also taken from the bridge.
no. 7 .. . soooooo sunny still. This was towards the end of the hike so around. .. 1815h-ish. The temperature hasn’t dropped.
no. 8 .. . photo zone
no. 9 .. . I’m glad we walked in the areas on top of the stairs. There is also another path below but zero shade.
That is all. Thank you for reading!

Korean Cold Noodles with Spicy Sweet and Sour Gochujang Sauce
Ingredients
3 bundles round style noodles (about 4 servings of noodles according to the package)
2 medium-sized pickling cucumbers*
½ large-sized carrot (or 1 medium-sized)
1 cup Kimchi (sour/fermented)
½ tsp Fish sauce
2 Tbsp hot pepper paste (gochujang)
1 Tbsp white sugar
1 Tbsp white vinegar (or rice vinegar)
1 green onion, thinly sliced
1 Tbsp Toasted sesame seeds
Instructions
Cut the cucumbers and carrots into 2-3 inch long matchstick-like pieces.
Slice the kimchi into very thin pieces.
Cook the noodles according to the package.
While the noodles are cooking, let's mix the spicy sweet and sour gochujang sauce. Mix the sugar, gochujang, fish sauce, and vinegar together well in a small bowl, and set aside for later.
Once the noodles are cooked, drain into a colander, rinse with cold water and drain well.
Now you can assemble your cold noodle bowl to your liking with the fresh vegetables, kimchi, spicy sauce mixture, green onions, and toasted sesame seeds.
Serve and enjoy!
Notes
*Pickling cucumbers have a more crunchy texture and not as mushy as regular cucumbers. If you can find pickling cucumbers, we highly recommend using this variety for this recipe. If you can't find pickling cucumbers, regular cucumbers will work just fine.

물 냉면, or mul-naengmyeon from Seoul Garden in Greensboro, North Carolina.
Buckwheat noodles served in an icy, tangy broth, topped with egg, cucumber, beef, and radish, this dish originated in 평양, or Pyongyang, North Korea, however varieties have popped up all over the Korean Peninsula. This one incorporated red chili paste as a topping, which indicates a connection to 전라남도 (South Jeolla Province) in South Korea.
Cold noodles have been consumed in the Korean Peninsula for centuries, with some sources indicating that the dish stems all the way back to the 조선 (Joseon Dynasty) era. Today they are associated with summertime and are consumed during the hot months, however the dish can be consumed year round and historically it was commonly enjoyed in the wintertime.
These were delicious. Tangy, refreshing, and somewhat of an olfactory experience when you add mustard and vinegar to the dish (which are served on the side and added to taste). The noodles themselves are a bit chewy and can be difficult to grab, and so scissors are often presented with the dish so as to cut up the noodles and cut them to a more manageable size.
