So Kisame's often considered the fourth most powerful Akatsuki member, but the top three are pretty unanimously Obito, Pain and Itachi. And with Kisame's motto being survival of the fittest and MO being taking out the weakest links, it’s fascinating to see him end up as one of the most well connected members of the Akatsuki. And since the top three never openly get to clash, technically speaking, he stays loyal to all of them. He's; 

- Working broadly for Pain, Akatsuki's open leader, who wants to create peace through traumatising the world through a cycle of war

- Working secretly for Obito, Akatsuki's real leader (and by proxy, Madara and Zetsu, Akatsuki's real-real leaders), who wants to create peace through trapping the world in a dream realm

- Working day-to-day for/with Itachi, the Akatsuki's biggest name, most powerful field member, and a secret double agent, who wants to create peace through becoming the most powerful shinobi that's ever lived,  and through using that power 'as much as he wants', 'lead the world to subjugation'

So either Kisame is the ninja equivalent of the minions, or the dojutsu wielding top three of the Akatsuki all looked to him and went 'yup, he's Henchman Shaped'

ok so first this is an absolutely epic takedown of everything the first person said, but also i can draw a direct line to my mom, my brother, or myself in damn near everything she said

i'll start by saying that of the three of us, i'm probably the most notable outlier bc i lived the first 19 years of my life as a girl prior to coming out and i was diagnosed sometime around 4th-6th grade iirc, and not only that but my mom was alerted that i was having some kind of social issues as early as pre-school, so as far as (people who were born as) girls go, i would say i'm a bit of an outlier

(side note - to anyone who for whatever reason has been keeping strict track of the things i've said concerning my family who's suddenly wondering why i'm now lumping my mom in with my brother and i as autistic when i've almost certainly explicitly said otherwise, the reason is that she finally admitted it earlier this week. proud of you, mom! admittedly she didn't remember she'd denied it in the past bc we're all also adhders but that's a separate thing)

anyway! my brother is a textbook case of getting adhd diagnosed significantly prior to the autism diagnosis, and while my mom hasn't been diagnosed with either one (and probably won't be bc she doesn't see the need and doesn't need the validation and also it's not nearly as subtle as i think she might have thought it was bc mom that level of incredibly specific history knowledge and need to share it is not "a casual interest"), she's more or less in the same boat (if you replace "diagnosed" with "noticed")

i'm tired and also way more bored of typing this than i was when i started (oops) so i'll skip whatever else i was thinking about that i totally didn't just completely forget about haha nope not me and say that i also as part of my current job have been and will for a bit continue to interact with a lot of autistic and similar people, and many of the people i've met who have more support needs simply would not use almost any social media app i've seen, either due to lack of ability, lack of interest, or bc the apps are innocently inaccessible at best and incredibly hostile to diverse needs at worst

(also - and this is not something i'm qualified in any way to dive into but it is something i have heard about and believe is worth mentioning in the hopes that someone who is more qualified might choose to step in - concerning racial biases in diagnoses, black and latino children (particularly black boys and latino girls, i think? not sure about that at all) are very frequently diagnosed with oppositional defiant disorder or odd instead of other more fitting diagnoses such as adhd, autism, bipolar disorder, etc. since - as this whole borderline essay has likely already made apparent through the privileges i've displayed both consciously and likely also not - i am white, this isn't something i've been directly affected by nor something i paid much attention to until relatively recently. but i do think it's worth acknowledging and keeping in mind when discussing diagnostic biases)

6. Pein/Konan - Look, they have the devotion thing down. You want angst? They have angst, and also a vaguely punk rock aesthetic that seems like it shouldn't exist in universe, which is at least visually interesting. However, Kishimoto forgot to give either of them personalities. They both appear to be the same flavor of Mildly Morose. You would think being leaders of a terrorist organization aiming to end the world's magical military forces via snatching up all the weapons of mass destruction for themselves would make for an interesting power couple, but it just..... doesn't? This ship is bereft of content because even the most versatile shippers don't know what to do with it.

5. Kisame/Itachi - Listen, I know this one will be controversial. I know this one has some very dedicated fans. And I am here to inform those fans that this ship is boring. Look. You just have to accept it. It's okay. Do you know how much MinaKushi I write? I'm not judging you. Sometimes you just want something boring and unchallenging. Their canon dynamic is largely Kisame just doing whatever Itachi wants, and fans are usually too cowardly to let Itachi act insane enough for the dynamic to be interesting. This ship is for people who think black pepper is spicy.

4. Orochimaru/Sasori - I wanted to rank this one higher. Do you know how potentially insane this ship is? Do you understand? Do you know how many nonconsensual surgeries of third parties this ship involves? The stolen bones? The crimes against humanity? The fall out and betrayal and obsession? This should be the greatest, most insane ship of all time. But I've read how it's written. This ship will only disappoint you. Only pain lies here.

3. Tobi/Deidara - This one also seems like it should make for a deeply insane ship, and yet is rarely delivered on. Their canon dynamic is fun, and also its implications turn completely mind-blowingly bonkers post identity reveal. Like what is Obito even doing here? I can only assume his crush on Deidara was just strong enough he got distracted from taking over the world for like six months in order to harass him. Cannot rank higher because fanon Obito is too annoying to read for more than a couple thousand words, and people who ship Deidara with men keep turning him into a sad little uwu bean. You will find some fun things, but also you will find the most annoying OOC content on the planet.

2. Kakuzu/Hidan - They! Are! Married! Bizarrely, the pair that have the most cooperative and supportive on-screen dynamic, which gets them to second place. Unfortunately fans think Kakuzu's entire personality is scamming people for money, and not even in a fun Ed Edd n Eddy way. Also Hidan is usually just like. Protestant with extra steps. How did this happen? We don't know. Fortunately there's a least a small amount of good content out there for them and their married life. They're happy. Hundreds are dead, but they are having a good time.

1.Sasori/Deidara - Genuinely confused about how this one won first. Like I like this ship, okay. It just seems like it shouldn't be number one, and yet here it is. They have a well-established canon dynamic that's a little bit spicy but also leaves room for cooperation. They're both small pretty boys so fans are less determined to sort them into the gender binary of "dark chuckling sex god" and "sad precious uwu bean." There's a wealth of content that doesn't suck and even maybe sometimes gets a little interesting. You will have to read the most cardboard, unnuanced dialogue about art, but it's not like canon was churning out high quality dialogue there either.

Would you rank the Akatsuki by how much you like them and why?

Anon this is so hard... :< I like them for different reasons and in different ways! How can I reliably rank such a list? I will do my best.

11. Zetsu — plot device man. Nah.

10. Pein — Honestly not much less of a plot device than Zetsu. His behaviour doesn't follow from his supposed motives, and his motives are boring to me. His character arc is unsatisfying.

9. Konan — Has the same problems as Pein to me, but ranked higher because she's prettier than him.

8. Tobi — Tobi appears to represent a really, really long term psychiatric episode Obito is having. If he doesn't, then I don't know what the FUCK is going on here. He's fun sometimes, despite this, but I like to think about character dynamics and it's really hard to reconcile Tobi and Obito, which annoys me. I don't like his interpersonal relationships or backstory enough to work at constructing a theory of his character most of the time.

7. Kisame — He's a straightforward guy with an interesting if shallow character concept: he doesn't like deceptions and lies, and yet is recruited to an organisation that is layer upon layer of different deceptions. Also, a shark. What's not to like?

6. Sasori — For many years I didn't like Sasori because I was very hung up on the idea of a character who, supposedly, had gotten rid of his feelings. How do you motivate a character who just... doesn't care? But over time I kind of got over that part of canon. Now I think he's fun because I like to think of him as a crittery little weirdo who will call you ugly to your face and use you for spare parts.

5. Deidara — Interesting because he has a really normative idea of how social interactions are meant to go, which we see when he is with Tobi and gets really annoyed by him. But he is also a furious trembling chihuahua who eats clay at the slightest provocation. Has a bad temper. I like Deidara. He has plenty of reasonable character traits that make sense propped up next to each other. Good job, Deidara.

4. Itachi — Itachi is another character whose behaviour doesn't seem to follow organically from his motives, I think because he was envisioned as a true antagonist and softened a lot at the last second. I like this about Itachi, though, because the contradictions imply some absolutely bonkers stuff about his character that, unlike Tobi, I feel we can reconcile into a coherent character that is just incredibly fucky. I like a fucky character.

3. Hidan — What is Hidan even. No no, don't get me wrong, I love Hidan, but from the perspective where we care about whether or not a character is a good character, he has to be one of the worst characters in this series. I love him less because of his canon character and more because his canon character is so ridiculous that I enjoy looking at it and trying to make him into a character that actually resembles a person. I also like the religious element. The pageantry. The mysticism. The drama. (The violence.)

2. Kakuzu — I like Kakuzu so much. He's another of these characters, like Hidan, who is fun for the challenge of constructing a coherent character out of what you've been presented with. The puzzle pieces will all fit if you smoosh them in hard enough! But I also like his grim, violent, avoidant personality. I also like how, like Sasori, he can be so delightfully crittery. Forbidden spaghetti man!!!

1. Orochimaru — I LOVE early series Orochimaru. This guy wants so much attention and he cares, deeply, about everyone he knows. That's not to say he values their well-being or approval, but rather that he is deeply invested in eliciting an emotional response from them. Canon is like "his goal is immortality and knowing every jutsu!" and like sure that's A goal but. my god. his other goal is to provoke everyone he loves to murder. (Bless you, Orochimaru.)
