Another uncommon shipping I think would work is Sonia and Nagito. She seems very pleased the way his eyes lit up during the trial like hers do during horror movies and she stuck up for him later on too. I’m a little afraid of him having that much power though…

Ahaha I actually had an au for them post-graduation in a non-despair time in which Nagito is traveling to Novoselic after having won a cruise trip there. And, though he would have avoided long travel, considering that his old classmate happened to be ruling said kingdom, Nagi thought he’d take the risk in order to get a chance to see her in action (plus he’s wanted to see the kingdom after learning so much about it through Sonia). Surprisingly nothing too catastrophic happens on the way and Nagito has a pleasant time taking in the sights. However, he starts noticing that not everything is rainbows and sunshine in Novoselic, and in fact many of its citizens seem rather displeased by the current government. This becomes all too clear when, during a public appearance/announcement made by none other than Sonia herself, Nagito overhears copious jeers towards the princess and even has to step in to stop someone from throwing a shoe at her—the scene causing Nagito’s presence in the kingdom to be known to Sonia. Sonia has a guard escort Nagito to her home, feeling utterly embarrassed of having him witness such a thing. It doesn’t take long for her to come clean of Novoselic’s troubles—more specifically the staggering amount of people who find her inadequate to rule and are opposed to her upcoming coronation. Sonia admits that she’s been lost in what to do ever since her parents sudden passing and feels she’s starting to agree with her citizen’s thoughts of being a failure of a ruler. She’s truly considering giving the crown to her cousin whom some of the citizens are supporting. Nagito’s heart went out to her, knowing fully well the feeling of losing one’s parents so unexpectedly, but to also be expected to lead a nation right after? My god the amount of stress must be astounding. To see the Ultimate Princess this…broken…it was blasphemous. And like hell he’s going to let her give up her crown and fall to despair—not if he can do anything about. So, Nagito offers his services. He reminds Sonia of what great things she’s done and is capable of doing, but what she really needs is support—someone on her corner. And though he may be a lowly nobody, he DOES understand a thing or two about politics (and manipulation). He’ll be her shoulder to cry on so she can turn to her citizens with a collected and confident face. He’ll be her test run when she’s unsure of an idea. He’ll be her eyes and ears to keep track of the masses and their tidying. He’ll be her anything and everything she needs in order to be the best beacon of Hope she can be. And my god does he really mean it.

Of course, this au wasn’t simply going to be a hurt/comfort with a happy ending. Oh no, no, not with Nagito. It would soon get twisted and quite complicated as many things do with him. And their ever intertwining relationship will set Sonia forth as a queen that Novoselic with surely remember.

Oh my god this ask really unlocked these old ass memories of this au that I legit just came up with after listening to Imagine Dragon’s “Enemy” once ☝️ I was like “but what if Nagito becomes Sonia’s advisor and makes her Novoselic’s most notorious ruler??” I didn’t think I still remembered this much of it but here we are lol

mmmmmmmm so the thing about komahinanami dynamic is that it is never ever just as simple as a three way romantic relationship where everyone is equally peachy. it simply cannot happen in a canon-adjacent universe. when u have hajime and chiaki who are literally friends to lovers, hajime and nagito who are enemies to lovers - the three of them together cannot possibly ignore those pre existing dynamics once a relationship is established.

and i'm gonna totally address the elephant in the room which is that nagito is canonically gay and ppl like to get pressed as fuck about shipping him w a girl - i am literally gonna explain this until my face turns blue but he makes sense with chiaki anyway AS LONG AS hajime is also there. exploring that sort of idol worship towards chiaki for being class rep, symbol of hope yadda yadda, turning into genuine fondness through the post-nwp trauma healing process, turning into two people who grow separate and grow together - it is so so complex and hajime is so essential for meeting them both where they are and encouraging this splice. is nagito gay? yeah. does he have love towards chiaki in the context of a polycule in which all three members are severely fuckin traumatized and find comfort and growth and fulfillment in their romantic relationship with each other? YEAH.

and i can't talk abt sexuality without gender but that'll be a post on its own. i like all gender flavours of komahinanami. cis is great, trans is great, i personally love the transfem chiaki headcanon and also nonbinary man nagito. it is very funny to me in fic or art when hajime is a binary trans man and nagito is like wowie i'm a genderfuck and hajime struggles to comprehend this. tldr i think they can all have a little gender as a treat.

on the sexual aspect of things my head has not decided on anything solid for them. i'll probably write smut for them at some point cause that's just how i roll but i need to have a very very firm grasp on what exactly that would look like first.

It would actually be a hilariously epic troll if that tweet was followed up by canonization of Soumaeda. Like "Yeah, Nagito's into guys like Kazuichi, who did you think we meant?".

Because the reactions I'm seeing to it...well it brings to mind the one thing that I dislike about Komahina and Kamukoma, two otherwise fine ships. Or more accurately fandom attitudes towards those ships. There are certain fans that I think are really possessive and gatekeep Nagito and Hajime/Izuru. I'm not convinced that most of the people celebrating are fans of Nagito's M/M ships in general. Just Komahina and Kamukoma, and they probably couldn't care less for Komaegi, Matsukoma, Soumaeda, Nekomaeda, Kuzukoma, etc.

To be fair though, I do actually agree that most of his best ships are with male characters. With F/M, I think it really is just Komazumi, Komanami, and (depending on the writer) Komamiki that have much going for them. Though I do also prefer to interpret Nagito as pan, because Nagito x Imposter is another underrated ship.

Yeah the gatekeepy ness always seems to come from the rival x protag ships in this fandom which is why for a bit with my first dip into this fandom in 2018 I kind of avoided them. I can enjoy them now though when treated well and well written. Like there is one Saiouma fic that makes me feral.

I’ve seen cute Komamiki art but otherwise don’t see much of the appeal. And Kodaka has tweeted in the past that Komeada likes girls full of hope and posted Nagito x someone’s femme self insert. Someone posted them here.

Hii!! I agree with your points and your interpretation is valid. But just wanted to say that I think that using a guy character not acting like a pervert and borderline assaulty around women as a proof of them not being attracted is a very flawed and harmful logic (talking ab the scene of Komaeda falling under Mikan’s skirt you mentioned). I’m attracted to women but if I fall under girl’s skirt or witness an embarrassing situation I will be uncomfortable too. Komaeda’s reaction is how a normal respectful person would react and I’m very saddened that the amount of pervert anime characters has normalized such behaviour

That's super fair! I only realize now I am using it under the expectations of Danganronpa since there are so many perverted characters in the franchise, you're right and thank you for pointing that out. That actually is really upsetting now that you mention it, yeah I'm going to edit that out ew.

I've made posts on twitter of small, even if silly, praises about how Nagito seems to really value consent. He's always the loudest and most annoyed about teruteru's behavior, and within the franchise he's the one who's the most respectful and realistic when it comes to the problematic subjects. It's sad that not every character is as respectful as him. In fact almost all of the dr2 male cast is crushing on girls, some being gross about it, the only ones who don't are Nekomaru and Nagito. Crushing on girls is definitely not the issue, but half of them being gross about it is.

Just to redeem the example because I'm upset by it here's some instances of his weird somewhat lack of interest in women that we've seen or general vagueness

Chiaki saying this isn't as straightforward but it still implies her being sexy wouldn't work to get Nagito's attention which still says things about his possible disinterest or respectful nature maybe even both.

He avoids the question of sexuality every time it's asked, he either doesn't know it himself, doesn't think about it because he thinks he's unworthy, or has to beat around the bush because he's closeted. Although outside of characterization wise it may just be kodaka staying vague because that's the common pattern Lmao. The question is avoided during Q&as and during ultra despair girls he just ignores Kurokoma altogether lmao (would add more but image limit on mobile is my worst enemy)

Either way the status of canon is: Nagito shows interest in men and we see he has sexual desires, he's anything that isn't straight or aroace. He doesn't show evident interest in women and there's been no official word on his sexuality, it is up in the air when it comes to specifics. He is absolutely a queer coded character, whether he's gay, pan, bi, or something else there's no doubt about that. I believe Nagito is gay because there's a lot of evidence supporting this, I think it also makes his storyline more impactful. But at the end of the day there is no said canon and people are free to headcanon what they want to, whatever people say that isn't invalidating important parts of his character we actively see is preferred.

Why have I seen no one talk about the fact that Nagito is pretty much Canonically gay? Or maybe I'm stupid and it's so obvious that he is that the fandom just decided it didn't need to be discussed, but regardless, I'm gonna talk about it because I'm fucking bored and I don't have motivation to do anything besides talk about gay people.

At the start of Dr2, Nagito is the only one that stays behind with Hajime on the beach while he was Unconscious, and continued to stick around with him while introducing him to everyone. He ends up finding himself really connecting to Hajime because Hajime isn't an ultimate and Nagito himself doesn't feel ultimate, so he feels like it makes them more similar.

Before it was reviled that Hajime had no talent, Nagito suggested that his talent could be serenity because "his mere presence brought him serenity."

And prior to chapter ones class trial, Hajime was the closest thing that Nagito had to a friend.

During his fifth hangout event, Nagito opens up to Hajime about his diseases and that he just wants to be loved for once before he dies. And holy shit dude. I get that the hangout events are basically just a dating simulator but thats so gay. Like it's canon that Nagito feels that way even though he told Hajime it was actually a lie(for his safety because everyone close to him will have bad luck). He just wants to be loved for once.

Also during his fifth hangout, he says "どうか忘れないで… ボクはキミを…キミの中に眠る希望を心から愛していると。"

In the official English translation, it's translated to:

"From the bottom of my heart... I am truly in love with the hope that sleeps inside you."

and yeah, its not necessarily inaccurate, but it really leaves out what power and meaning Nagito originally said has.

a mote accurate translation is something like, "Please don't forget I love yo-.... the hope that sleeps inside you."

It's also very important to note that in the original text he says, "愛して���る" or "ishiteiru" which on the surface just translates to "I love you" It's a very very strong word to use to say I love you and is considered very romantic, so the fact that he said that to Hajime, is basically confirmation that he loves him.

but if that wasn't enough, I have a lot more to point Nagito having romantic feelings for Hinata.

First, the literal outro for Danganronpa 3 "Zettai Kibou basude" or "Absolute hope's birthday" is sung by Megumi Ogata (Nagito's Japanese voice) And Has some, interesting lyrics, to say the least.

"in the school building at night,

my heart throbs as i contiune to wait.

"I was born for the sake of meeting you" was what I thought at that time."

"I'll mess you up and let you induldge"

"I want you"

"I miss you"

"All of me is devoted to you"

THERE'S SO MUCH MORE. I could literally make a whole post on how gay that song is holy hell.

Oh and if it somehow wasn't obvious enough that the song is about Hajime, it was released on Hajime's birthday, or the absolute hope's birthday. (yk, like the song is called)

So it's pretty obvious at this point that this man is hella gay for Hajime. Like to say that he's straight at this point is just ignorant.

Oh and we have another gayass song.

"Poison -gekiyaku-" (I think) it translates to "Poison -Deadly Drug-"

This is his character song, again sung by Megumi Ogata.

The song literally opens up with:

That's basically the really big things I wanted to get out of the way, but there are so many little details that hint towards him just being gay or liking Hajime that i would still like to point out.

Like in Danganronpa 3, when he meets Makoto after waking up from his coma, he grabs onto his hands. Yes Nagito loves hope obviously but sonce when do heterosexual guys just grab the hands of someone they just met?

And the scene on the boat that same episode that shows Chiaki's ghost dissapear when Nagito calls Hajime over to show that Hajime is moving forward. gay as hell.

i made this powerpoint in two sittings across 2 days, each sitting about 8-12 hours long

i got about 7 total hours of sleep in that time. not for each day- total. i was mad scientist delirious by the end of this

originally, i wanted to include far more- i wanted to analyze other media in depth (like the stageplays, the drama CD, komaeda's official songs, and even official art and materials) but i did not have the time for it. maybe i will make a new testament powerpoint detailing these as well as fandom analysis but that is not currently in the works
