hm. in the process of doing some informal research re: Kollok I found this line on Polygon:

"One of the show’s gimmicks is that players who subscribe to the channel on Twitch can then make their own characters and are then allowed to embark on a freeform text-based role-play via Discord."

And I gotta ask but has anyone from the Polygon TTRPG/Actual Play writers every been on social media because I'm like, pretty sure any fan of any show can make up an OC and do text-based roleplay on a Discord server; it just might not be an official Discord server. I really do increasingly feel like Polygon capes so hard for Kollok and the heavily film-edited D20 seasons because they don't actually have a good grounding in basic actual play and fandom culture and are honestly a little embarrassed by it. Unfortunately this also means that they're like "Gadzooks! What are these Incredible New concepts like Text-based Roleplay and Longform Campaigns Of Undetermined Length!" and overall it gives off the vibe of a not terribly bright and profoundly stoned college sophomore trying to appear knowledgeable about music by acting like the guitar was invented in 1995 by Oasis.

Can somebody please tell me what tf kollok is? I spent 10 minutes looking stuff up and I have no idea what is going on but three content creators I know are in it so I feel like I need to watch to watch it but can someone please explain. Do I need to watch the first two seasons before I watch the third one? What tf is the plot? I don't know what's going on so I need someone who does to explain it to me😭😭

Ok but actually - this is why I love Kollok. Even though it’s a ttrpg, I can still analyze the characters and themes like any book, movie or TV show. Ttrpgs are not always a game, but a medium for art, and should be treated as such. The reason Billy is my favorite character is because of how much effort is put into his confusing morals and endearing quirks. And the fact that it’s improvised makes parallels and details like the one I originally mentioned all the more special. Every episode, the people who make the show are just as uncertain as to where it will go as those watching are. It reminds me of how new universes are created in the show. Every single decision creates a new reality, which leads to infinite possibilities. If it weren’t for the chaos of a fan-controlled rumor system, and the desire of Matt Sohinki to play a type of person he wanted to understand, Mallory wouldn’t have even survived season 1. The thought that some of the best parts of the show may have not even existed if certain decisions had been made is saddening, but also exhilarating. I hate it when people criticize books for not being “planned ahead”. Life isn’t planned ahead. But connections within a story can still be made, whether they were conscious or not. Not all symbolism is purposeful, not all lines are thought of before they’re spoken. I’m sure that the concept of the Black Rock never even crossed Zac’s mind while he was drafting up Rachel’s character sheet, and no way in hell did he ever think that his lovely little NPC would ever be compared to that one guy from 10 Candles he decided to put in the show for shits and giggles.

I would apologize for ranting, but I’m not going to, because you probably hyperfixate on Kollok as much as I do, and enjoyed every second of reading this.

My favorite things about Nancy Drew are as follows 1: The fact that they are all over 18. I appreciate not having to worry about children and 2: the fact that her dad has learned the truth so early on. 

Both are super refreshing.
