just to give my 2 cents (not that it particularly matters), but i honestly disagree with this because it requires a hierarchical view of relationships which i don't think applies well to vbs (and is frankly, amatonormative, but that's a whole other tangent i won't go on here)

they do all care about each other equally. they just care about their partners in a different way from their teammates. the relationships are different, but one is not more significant than the other; especially when we get into specifics.

(event spoilers below, i labeled them in the tags)

for example, you made the statement that only an's singing will make kohane's heart pound, but this is not true. in fact, during kohane5, we are treated to this scene:

there's also the fact that in main story, kohane showed incredible amounts of concern for akito and touya and did everything she could to help them even when she was under the impression that they sabotaged her and an. there's also akito supporting an in various events, the fact that in akito3, she was the one to give him the dream of "surpassing rad weekend" rather than just "i want to put on a good event like that", and the implication he wanted to team up with her during vbs main story. there's also touya seeing himself in kohane in main story and touya1, and her hard work trying to compose in touya3 giving him the boost he needed to continue composing. there's akito going from making jabs at kohane early on to wholeheartedly supporting her in kohane3; when an barely could— and he noticed that in resonant town and was still there to support her through her insecurities. there's even an4, where akito made it blatantly clear he trusted an to keep singing with them— where it was made clear that all of vbs trusted an to keep fighting, no matter what. there's kohane4, where touya was pulling the rest of them along in spite of all the backlash they faced. there's an5, where both akito and touya did everything they could to help her with her feelings towards kohane; and especially touya, who couldn't bear to see an repeat the same mistakes he did in main story— not just because their team relies on it, but because he undeniably cares about her.

this doesn't even account for earlier events, like akito1, where everyone was concerned for akito (not just touya), and i failed to mention that kohane's main conflict in kohane3 is the fact that she doesn't want to hurt akito by messing up a solo at crawl green, the livehouse he has trauma at (and even if she never learned the specifics, she clearly can empathize with it, especially with what happened to her in main story). i can list a lot more examples (like touya's an2 card story revealing that he has been worried about an this whole time up until an5, but akito wouldn't tell him anything because an was only comfortable coming to him and not touya or things like akito fes, an fes, mixed events, and other card stories) but we'd be here forever.

vbs does have two duos, yes. their partnerships are very important to their lore, and i don't think they should be undermined (and frankly i hate when people do that).

HOWEVER, i also don't think it's fair to treat the friendships they've made with their teammates as something "less important" to these characters just because the partners tend to be more openly affectionate with each other. all of them would be miserable if they weren't a team and were just still duos, if you think about it rationally. kohane would have no one to challenge her as an equal, an wouldn't have anyone to comfort her and then push her into talking with kohane, while akito and touya would likely be permanently broken up without the interference of a sekai (which only exists BECAUSE vbs are meant to be a team; that's their true feelings), and none of them would surpass rad weekend; because they'd never get the growth that they needed from each other.

anyways please don't take my argument personally, i just wanted to add my own thoughts, so i'm sorry in advance if this makes you uncomfortable

Each time someone claims that *insert VBS character* cares about their team the same as their partner, I explode. Yes, they are not *just* two duos, they're a team, but they're still two duos. Akito will care more about Toya than both Kohane and An. Only An's singing will make Kohane's heart pound. Toya won't sing without Akito. Only Kohane will be able to make An feel such strong feelings of both adoration and inferiority.

They can care about their teammates but value their partner more.

i think people dogpile on light up the fire too hard for being "bad" when the truth is that it has jarring pacing at the end solely because it seems that clpl had to skip a whole vbs focus in order to meet the 3rd anniversary deadline.

i make this claim because of two things:

-> an's resting/grieving period being contained to card stories, area conversations, seasonal lines, and virtual lives

-> on your feet, and how that ties into the first point

the very beginning of oyf gives us exposition; it shows us a scene of an telling her dad she will never forgive him for not telling her about nagi.

this is obviously important for an's character arc, and i think the fact that it's relegated to being an expository flashback in the very beginning of a kohane focus as well as the other things surrounding lutf's extra content suggest that colorful palette intended to have an extra event inbetween those two events and simply ran out of time.

this makes even more sense when you consider that vbs took the longest out of any unit to start their second arc; they were doomed to be on a time crunch once 3rd anni rolled around.

i also believe that this event would have most likely been a touya focus— as touya would be able to relate to an's issues with ken in a way, and given that that exposition scene in oyf was likely the "resolution" of this hypothetically skipped event; it would tie into themes of guilt, something integral to touya's issues in the first concerto.

and by guilt, i mean the possibility of an feeling conflicted about how she should handle things with her dad, if she has to forgive him or not, etc.

it would be important to see this event through touya's lens because it would segue into the first concerto's themes well.

addirionally, when lutf released, i also thought a touya focus was next because of how we had a whole scene where taiga reminded touya of his father— it felt like one of those loose threads in events that clpl tends to follow up in the following unit event; so i think this once again points to us having a missing event.

however, this hypothetical event could also work as an akito focus, mainly because of akito's general relevancy to an's feelings, his mini spotlight in lutf, his fes story, and his card story for lutf. yadayadayada you get it

but even if there is no hypothetical event to speak of, i don't think lutf is as bad as people make it out to be. an's words at the end of the event aren't just her going "i'm okay now", it's her putting on a brave face for the sake of her sanity; again, the area conversations, card stories and oyf tell us that she wasn't just fine after— in her card story for lutf she literally breaks down crying to her mom about nagi, which takes place after chapter 8.

they also couldn't just skip on your feet to keep a calm event for the arc ender, or else kohane would not finish her character arc that ran starting with kohane1 properly!!

oyf marks a big milestone in development for kohane, and also marks vbs finding their own resolve despite all the odds being stacked against them; i don't think we talk about how touya had to assume the leader role of vbs during oyf's event period because he was the only one unaffected by people talking shit about them enough. that's bad, especially for people like an, akito, and kohane who are such lively kids; they were absolutely crushed by what taiga did to them (and touya's only "okay" because he's used to it which is tragic to think about).

oyf ALSO has vbs stand up to taiga and give him the consequences he deserved for his actions. an also tells taiga she won't forgive him, which is great. fuck you taiga. also remember when akito gave taiga a death threat to his face in oyf? that was hilarious . why does nobody talk about this event.

i got on a tangent there. sorry. but i hope everyone can understand my point

To Be a Tsukasa Fan is to Suffer

So I haven't really thought about Tsukasa5 in a while, in light of the most recent event release all my feelings have come rushing back and I've decided to just write it out.

I feel like Colopale really dropped the ball with Tsukasa5.

1. The Reveal

Firstly, it's reveal. It was revealed along with Kohane5 before the Bloomfes event. Since Colorfes has never been connected with a character focus event, so since Kohane5 was revealed before Tsukasa5 a large part of the fandom, myself included assumed the July would play out like this.

Bloomfest -> Kohane5 -> L/n WL -> Tsukasa5

Tsukasa5 would be the lim, but in reality Kohane5 was comnected to Bloomfes and was the lim event, while Tsukasa5 was perm.

Which alright fair, in the same way colorfes has never been connected to a character focus event, the lim event would usually be revealed at the end of the month instead of the beginning.

I can give this a pass, we as a fandom assumed that Tsukasa5 would be lim because VBS had just gotten a lim event and we assumed Bloomfes would be tied to a mix event. It still bothers me, but it's not as if Colopale promised a Tsukasa lim, we just assumed it was.

So, I can accept this.

2. The Number

It's the 87th event and Tsukasa's number is 88. Counting Cellphone Love Story it's technically the 88th commisioned song, but no one's counting Cellphone Love Story.

But alright, N25 and MMJ just got an event in June and since July had L/n WL was on July, it was either going to be a WxS or VBS event. Ignoring the fact that if a mixed event were to happen it could be just VBS but whatever.

Was it possible to make Tsukasa5 the 88th character focus? Yes.

Do I understand why it was the 87th? Yes.

3. The Story

I have no problem with the song, I like Sucessful Defeat AAAAA! and I think Wonderful Oppurtunity did a great job, I'm just not a fan of the story.

To preface this I've only read the first two parts of the story because I have not found any further translations, which probably show how most people feel about the story.

I think the main issue is that this story feels kind of like filler. It's WxS go to an Edo Period set and solve a crime, the issue to me is that it doesn't feel like it move WxS story or Tsukasa's story in any meaningful way.

I'm not asking for Tsukasa angst, but if we're getting a Tsukasa focus once a year, at the very least I'd like it if I gained a deeper understanding of his character or it feels as if he's move forward in a meaninful way. This event just doesn't feel like it does.

4. Airi5

Congrats to all you Airi fans, she did need another lim, did it just have to be now.

I could forgive Colopale with my issues with Tsukasa5 if it weren't for Airi5. Right after L/n WL it's the 88th event and it's lim and it's Airi5. It feels like Colopale's rubbing salt in the wound to all us Tsukasa fans.

I'd be fine if it was a mixed perm then L/n WL then Airi5 then Tsukasa5, cause at least Tsukasa's getting the 88th event.

It feels like all of hopes and dreams that Tsukasa fans had for his 5th event had been dashed away and was given to Airi.

Congratulations to all you Airi fans, I truly am happy for you. However as you celebrate the gift that you have received, I shall be mourning for a world that never existed.

hmmm i'm mixed on it. the fes is dumb. the fes is awful lineup bc now it messes up wxs/meiko's lim distribution for the next however many years and kanade makes sense honestly but pairing her with meiko means all the fes pairs are probably gonna be totally random mixed unit pairs.

the lim event. two vbs hako lims not just in the same year but within 2 months is insane. we've had two hako lims for the same unit in one year (2022 haruka lim banner hell), but the 2 months is fucking insane. AND BOTH HAVE KOHANE RATEUP. see i had a bad feeling that this could happen. i brushed off the fact that two events were announced which would make kohane5 lim on the account of two hako lims in 2 months which is insane. i thought they were being nice to tsukasa fans and giving them a month to save instead of 2 days, and assumed maybe this will just be how it is from now on. ALSO THIS IS WXS' FOURTH TIME BEING THE SHORTENED EVENT. SECOND TIME FOR TSUKASA ALONE. theyre just bullying tsukasa oshis bc they go so hard on tiering /j. also rip rui but he's probably still july lim lol even if not on a wxs event.

however on the bright side, it makes sense. this is THE VBS event that we have been working towards the entire time. having it be lim makes sense just because of the importance of it all. like sure give it super fancy card arts they deserve it (rip toya who is definitely 2*). also the cards look really good for both fes and Over Rad Squad. We'll ignore that Akito's hairstyle is just his wday hair flipped and shorter though...

i decided to make a list of stories that got me invested into each character... I guess you can also take this as a reading recommendation

ichika

-> main story. ichika2 and ichika5 also really furthered my enjoyment of her. ichika5 killed me

saki

-> probably also main story? i like her a lot in saki1 and her first mixed, but i also exploded seeing her so happy in saki6. saki is great all around, even if i consider saki4 to be a weaker event (it has obvious signs of cut content and a slight pacing issue)

honami

-> main story. i love all of her events. world link crushed me and rudely reminded me why i relate to her so much lmao

shiho

-> shiho2, probably. reading shiho4 was also fun! it took me a bit longer to warm up to her in contrast to the other girls in leoneed. her recent mixed is one of my favorite events in the game

minori

-> main story. minori1 and minori3 are amazing

haruka

-> haruka3, but i also like haruka2. haruan parallels drive me nuts

airi

-> airi2, but the real appreciation set in at airi5. also airi3 is nice

shizuku

-> shizuku1, but my interest died down at shizuku2. it's been coming back gradually since shizuku3, which is one of the best events in the game imo

kohane

-> main story, but kohane3, kohane4 and kohane5 are really awesome. to be honest i also rlly like her 1st and 2nd focuses, so it's hard to pick

-> an3. it's the event that actually got me into taking vbs lore more seriously, when i had written off their events in the past because i (as ashamed as i am to say this) jumped on the vbs story hate bandwagon. also unsurprisingly i think every an event is good so go read them all >:)

akito

-> surprisingly, his first mixed. akito3 was what really kicked it up, though. again all his events are good these r just the two that have stuck with me the most

touya

-> this one's... complicated. i first started liking him while reading saki's first mixed (hinamatsuri). however, if we are talking about what got me even more invested into him, it was touya2 by far. touya2 is so good. but his best event is touya4, so read that too... but I guess you need to read the other touya events too and—

tsukasa

-> tsukasa2. on the stage of dazzling lights. this is what got me into reading prsk lore seriously in the first place. also, tsukasa5 is my favorite tsukasa event, but you have to read tsukasa3 first for his development to hit there...

emu

-> emu1 made me cry if that counts. i really liked emu5.

nene

-> main story. i like nene2 and nene3. nene4 is evil (good)

rui

-> main story. rui1. rui2. rui3. they're all good. rui4 scares me. that's all

Our An fictive could write you paragraphs (more than I have written.) on how much she loves antoya. Sadly she. Isn't fronting right now. But I didn't want to keep you waiting so I'm answering it.

Antoya is absolutely adorable in my opinion. I love seeing the twos dynamic together and their two existing - one being an archive - covers together are absolutely amazing.

I love the amount of stuff that they've gotten together recently, the Toya4 being that the only card who wasn't them or a virtual singer was a two star. An5 having An, Toya, and Kohane four stars. Kohane5 being akikoha and An. Toya5 (??? (Is it Toya5 or just a mixed event?/genq)) being antoya and kanamafu. Also the fact that antoya cards are matching and kanamafu cards are matching! Antoya having the blue/green/yellow tones and kanamafu with the purple/pink/blue tones. Speaking of matching cards not to mention the world link??? Plus they've been put together more often recently and in Ultra C An running over to Toya.

I don't get why this ship has so many haters they're literally so adorable.
